It is now well-accepted that the total costs of ownership can have a significant effect on the economics of many service offerings, and that unmanageable complexity can threaten life and economic health in the event of failures. Autonomic computing and communications apply notions of feedback control, self-organisation, monitoring and reasoning to the construction and management of large systems. Originally suggested by IBM as a way to control total costs of ownership, the fields have expanded to address the design and implementation of stable, "self-*" algorithms as well as the overall design and analysis of adaptive properties and behaviour. Such self-* systems offer to improve the dynamic responses of systems to changing conditions, simplifying their construction, management and deployment. Although often considered separately, the interdependence of computing and communications in the modern world implies that we apply autonomic techniques on a whole-system basis that encompasses both aspects of systems design. In this special issue we have two aims: to provide a guide to a unified field of autonomic computing and communications through invited contributions addressing cross-system and whole-system techniques; and to present novel research contributions that advance the state of autonomic and self-organising systems design. With this in mind, we invite research contributions including (but most definitely not limited to) the following topics: - techniques for self-organisation at a system level, - foundational science of autonomics and self-organisation, - application of novel techniques to large-scale problems, - self-stabilising and self-optimising algorithms, - evaluations and evaluation methodologies for self-organising systems, - managing trade-offs between system aspects. [Our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message] ************************************************************************* * CALL FOR PAPERS * * * * A Special Issue of Wiley Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing * * On * * Underwater Sensor Networks: Architectures and Protocols * * * ************************************************************************* OVERVIEW: The ocean, which covers about two third of the Earth surface, is a largely unexplored world that has fascinated humans since the beginning of history. Over a long period of time, there is a great interest in exploring the ocean and other underwater environments (e.g., rivers, lakes, and reservoirs) for scientific, environmental, commercial, and military purposes. With the increasing demand for acquiring localized precise and real-time knowledge of the harsh underwater environments, current underwater exploration technologies such as SONAR or other remote sensing technologies can no longer meet such needs. Underwater Sensor Network is an emerging network paradigm which provides a promising solution for efficiently exploring the ocean and underwater environments. An underwater sensor network consists of a number of underwater sensor nodes with sensing, data processing, and communication capabilities, which are deployed in a region of interest and collaborate to accomplish a common task, such as underwater environmental monitoring, mine reconnaissance, and military surveillance. Driven by a broad range of potential applications in both civilian and military areas as well as rapid technological advances in microelectronics, wireless communications, and embedded processing, underwater sensor networks have recently received a lot of attention from both academia and industry. Distinguished from terrestrial sensor networks, an underwater sensor network has some unique characteristics that need to be particularly addressed, such as low communication bandwidth, large propagation delay, harsh geographical environment, floating node mobility, and high error probability. These unique characteristics present many challenges for the design of underwater sensor networks, including the design of network architectures and protocols. This has recently motivated a growing interest and a considerable amount of research activities in studying various major issues in the context of network architectures and protocols, including medium access control, topology organization and control, routing and data dissemination, energy efficiency and power control, node localization and tracking, reliable transport and quality of service, and network security and attack defense. TOPICS: The objective of this special issue is to present a collection of high-quality research papers that report the latest research advances in the area of underwater sensor networks, focused on network architectures and protocols. We are soliciting original contributions that have not been published and are not currently under consideration by any other journals. It is now well-accepted that the total costs of ownership can have a significant effect on the economics of many service offerings, and that unmanageable complexity can threaten life and economic health in the event of failures. Autonomic computing and communications apply notions of feedback control, self-organisation, monitoring and reasoning to the construction and management of large systems. Originally suggested by IBM as a way to control total costs of ownership, the fields have expanded to address the design and implementation of stable, "self-*" algorithms as well as the overall design and analysis of adaptive properties and behaviour. Such self-* systems offer to improve the dynamic responses of systems to changing conditions, simplifying their construction, management and deployment. Although often considered separately, the interdependence of computing and communications in the modern world implies that we apply autonomic techniques on a whole-system basis that encompasses both aspects of systems design. In this special issue we have two aims: to provide a guide to a unified field of autonomic computing and communications through invited contributions addressing cross-system and whole-system techniques; and to present novel research contributions that advance the state of autonomic and self-organising systems design. With this in mind, we invite research contributions including (but most definitely not limited to) the following topics: - techniques for self-organisation at a system level - foundational science of autonomics and self-organisation - application of novel techniques to large-scale problems - self-stabilising and self-optimising algorithms - evaluations and evaluation methodologies for self-organising systems - managing trade-offs between system aspects Contributions addressing issues that cross between the autonomic computing and communication fields are particularly welcome. Such networks fall into the fields of mobile ad-hoc networking (MANET) and delay-tolerant networking (DTN).Opportunistic Networks enable user communication in an environment where disconnection and reconnection are common and link performance is extremely dynamic. They are very suitable to support the situation where network infrastructure has limited coverage and users have "islands of connectivity". By taking advantage of device mobility, information can be stored and forwarded over a wireless link when connection 'opportunities' arise (e.g. an appropriate network contact is met). In this view, traditional Internet connectivity can be considered as a special case of connection opportunity. With numerous emerging applications, Opportunistic Networks allow a huge number of devices to communicate end-to-end without requiring any pre-existing infrastructure and are very suitable to support pervasive networking scenarios. Topics of Interest ----------------- Original papers addressing applications and architecture, systems and protocols design, development and analysis, in all areas related to Opportunistic Networking are solicited. Papers that bring out interesting and novel ideas at an early stage are favored over highly-polish journal-style results. HotMobile's small workshop format makes it ideal for presenting and discussing new directions or controversial approaches. We solicit submissions of position papers that focus primarily on applications and systems and that propose new directions of research, advocate non-traditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate controversy and discussion. We particularly look for position papers containing highly original ideas in the following topic areas, although papers describing other challenges unique to or exacerbated by mobility are also welcome: * Operating system and distributed systems support for mobile computing * Coordination, aggregation, and spontaneous interaction of mobile devices * Novel applications and environments supporting mobility * HCI issues related to mobile computing * Security and privacy of mobile computing * Management, configuration, and deployment of systems supporting mobility Submissions describing new lower-level technologies are welcome if they focus on how the technology is being used or integrated into a system or application. To encourage an atmosphere conducive to participation, attendance will be limited to 70 participants. Authors of submitted papers and accepted demo proposals will be given first priority, with others able to register on a space-available basis. Paper submissions are due on Oct 16, 2007 at 23:59:59 EDT. Submissions should contain 6 or fewer U.S. letter pages in PDF format. Papers should be single column using 11pt font. The conference proceedings will be published by the ACM. Preliminary proceedings will be made available to workshop participants online ahead of the workshop. Printed proceedings will be published and mailed to participants after the workshop. As is customary, papers must not have been published elsewhere and may not be simultaneously under submission at another venue. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany http://www.tm.uka.de/wons2008 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scope of the conference ----------------------- With the increasing variety of wireless technologies, ubiquitous connectivity and service provisioning more and more complements traditional, infrastructure-based cellular networks. WLANs, WiMax, Mobile Ad-hoc networks as well as vehicular networks and sensor networks are popular examples. The goal is to provide services "on demand" with minimal planning and management effort as well as with little dependency on existing network infrastructures. On-demand provisioning of services in such infrastructure-less environments is a challenge in itself. Methods for self-organisation are strongly required to enable this vision. Other challenges are posed by the architectures suited for different networks and applications (e.g., specialized architectures for sensor networks) also raising issues with respect to interoperability. WONS is now at its fifth edition and is still confronted with new technical challenges and new application demands. As such it provides a premier forum for high quality paper presentations and lively discussions. For this conference we request submissions of high quality research papers on "wireless on demand networks" that provide novel insights on protocol and network design, modeling and performance evaluation, pricing and profitability models, QoS models, practical implementations, service level aspects and Internet integration of wireless networks. By viewing technologies through a Kaleidoscope, these forward looking conferences will also seek to identify new topics for standardization. Arguably no industry undergoes faster changes than the ICT industry. So looking five, ten or more years into the future - What will the network look like? Which services will be offered? How will it affect people's lives? To this end ITU, with technical co-sponsor IEEE Communications Society, is issuing this third CfP. NGN represents one of the most complex transitions ever to have occurred in telecoms. Taking into account new realities in the ICT industry such as the need to converge and optimise operating networks and the extraordinary expansion of digital traffic, NGN will enable a richer set of applications to the end user, as well as allowing operators to benefit from a far simpler architecture and the economies of scale associated with standards. It is to inspire contributions towards a kaleidoscopic view of communication habits for the future and it will highlight technologies, services and applications five years and beyond that will capitalize on the NGN infrastructure and lead to the ubiquitous network society in which information can be accessed anywhere and anytime by anyone and anything. The event will also cover multidisciplinary aspects related to the deployment of NGN, including analysis of regulatory and societal challenges. This event focuses on research and practical applications of network measurement and analysis techniques. The conference's goal is to provide a forum for current work in its early stages. Original papers are invited from the research and operations communities on topics including, but not limited to: * Active Network Measurements * Passive Network Measurements * Performance Metrics * Traffic Statistics * Measurement Visualization * New Measurement Approaches & Techniques * Deployment of Measurement Infrastructure * New Measurement Initiatives * Applications of Network Measurements * Network Measurements and Security * Network Troubleshooting using Measurements * Reproduce (or Refute) Previous Measurement Results PAM values contributions that are broader than experimental papers. Data and tool release are seen as first-class contributions and preference will be given in that direction. In particular, releasing measurement data allows for better science to be conducted in the field of network measurement. Therefore, an award will be given at PAM 2008 for the best paper based on a new dataset that the authors are releasing for community use in subsequent research. To qualify, a paper must significantly utilize a dataset that has been collected for the work presented in the paper. Further, the dataset must be freely available to any researcher; wireless data sets may, for instance, be published through CRAWDAD. Novel datasets are especially encouraged. The awarded paper will be chosen from the set of qualifying papers accepted for the conference by a committee made up of a subset of the program and steering committees. No additional space will be given once a paper has been accepted. Authors should flag papers they wish to be considered for the best paper based on a new dataset award with a footnote on the first page of the paper. The proceedings of past PAM conferences were published in Springer LNCS series, and we have a preliminary indication from Springer that this will continue for PAM 2008 (pending the formal agreement). Authors are, as always, asked to refrain from submitting papers submitted to PAM to other venues during the reviewing period.
