To meet these challenges, system designers can resort to a number of tools and techniques at PHY, MAC or higher layers of the protocol stack. In order to increase the network efficiency (Bit/Sec/Hz per Euro/Dollar) while providing the required QoS, a more efficient utilization of the spectral resource across the network will be required. Smart resource allocation schemes should help provide the customer with a smooth user experience while efficiently tackling interference issues in agressive reuse environment, whether in cellular or adhoc scenarios. Ideally, they should be aware, i.e. jointly designed with lower layer algorithms (multiple antenna systems, spatial division multiple access, OFDMA, multi-cell cooperative coding) and potentialy upper layers as well (transport/routing/application). It is now well-accepted that the total costs of ownership can have a significant effect on the economics of many service offerings, and that unmanageable complexity can threaten life and economic health in the event of failures. Autonomic computing and communications apply notions of feedback control, self-organisation, monitoring and reasoning to the construction and management of large systems. Originally suggested by IBM as a way to control total costs of ownership, the fields have expanded to address the design and implementation of stable, "self-*" algorithms as well as the overall design and analysis of adaptive properties and behaviour. Such self-* systems offer to improve the dynamic responses of systems to changing conditions, simplifying their construction, management and deployment. Although often considered separately, the interdependence of computing and communications in the modern world implies that we apply autonomic techniques on a whole-system basis that encompasses both aspects of systems design. In this special issue we have two aims: to provide a guide to a unified field of autonomic computing and communications through invited contributions addressing cross-system and whole-system techniques; and to present novel research contributions that advance the state of autonomic and self-organising systems design. With this in mind, we invite research contributions including (but most definitely not limited to) the following topics: - techniques for self-organisation at a system level, - foundational science of autonomics and self-organisation, - application of novel techniques to large-scale problems, - self-stabilising and self-optimising algorithms, - evaluations and evaluation methodologies for self-organising systems, - managing trade-offs between system aspects. Over a long period of time, there is a great interest in exploring the ocean and other underwater environments (e.g., rivers, lakes, and reservoirs) for scientific, environmental, commercial, and military purposes. With the increasing demand for acquiring localized precise and real-time knowledge of the harsh underwater environments, current underwater exploration technologies such as SONAR or other remote sensing technologies can no longer meet such needs. Underwater Sensor Network is an emerging network paradigm which provides a promising solution for efficiently exploring the ocean and underwater environments. An underwater sensor network consists of a number of underwater sensor nodes with sensing, data processing, and communication capabilities, which are deployed in a region of interest and collaborate to accomplish a common task, such as underwater environmental monitoring, mine reconnaissance, and military surveillance. Driven by a broad range of potential applications in both civilian and military areas as well as rapid technological advances in microelectronics, wireless communications, and embedded processing, underwater sensor networks have recently received a lot of attention from both academia and industry. Distinguished from terrestrial sensor networks, an underwater sensor network has some unique characteristics that need to be particularly addressed, such as low communication bandwidth, large propagation delay, harsh geographical environment, floating node mobility, and high error probability. These unique characteristics present many challenges for the design of underwater sensor networks, including the design of network architectures and protocols. This has recently motivated a growing interest and a considerable amount of research activities in studying various major issues in the context of network architectures and protocols, including medium access control, topology organization and control, routing and data dissemination, energy efficiency and power control, node localization and tracking, reliable transport and quality of service, and network security and attack defense. TOPICS: The objective of this special issue is to present a collection of high-quality research papers that report the latest research advances in the area of underwater sensor networks, focused on network architectures and protocols. Such networks fall into the fields of mobile ad-hoc networking (MANET) and delay-tolerant networking (DTN).Opportunistic Networks enable user communication in an environment where disconnection and reconnection are common and link performance is extremely dynamic. They are very suitable to support the situation where network infrastructure has limited coverage and users have "islands of connectivity". By taking advantage of device mobility, information can be stored and forwarded over a wireless link when connection 'opportunities' arise (e.g. an appropriate network contact is met). In this view, traditional Internet connectivity can be considered as a special case of connection opportunity. With numerous emerging applications, Opportunistic Networks allow a huge number of devices to communicate end-to-end without requiring any pre-existing infrastructure and are very suitable to support pervasive networking scenarios. Topics of Interest ----------------- Original papers addressing applications and architecture, systems and protocols design, development and analysis, in all areas related to Opportunistic Networking are solicited. HotMobile's small workshop format makes it ideal for presenting and discussing new directions or controversial approaches. We solicit submissions of position papers that focus primarily on applications and systems and that propose new directions of research, advocate non-traditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate controversy and discussion. We particularly look for position papers containing highly original ideas in the following topic areas, although papers describing other challenges unique to or exacerbated by mobility are also welcome: * Operating system and distributed systems support for mobile computing * Coordination, aggregation, and spontaneous interaction of mobile devices * Novel applications and environments supporting mobility * HCI issues related to mobile computing * Security and privacy of mobile computing * Management, configuration, and deployment of systems supporting mobility Submissions describing new lower-level technologies are welcome if they focus on how the technology is being used or integrated into a system or application. HotMobile 2008 will be a highly interactive workshop. Submissions will be judged based upon originality, technical merit, topical relevance, and likelihood of leading to insightful discussion at the workshop. To encourage an atmosphere conducive to participation, attendance will be limited to 70 participants. Authors of submitted papers and accepted demo proposals will be given first priority, with others able to register on a space-available basis. Paper submissions are due on Oct 16, 2007 at 23:59:59 EDT. Submissions should contain 6 or fewer U.S. letter pages in PDF format. Papers should be single column using 11pt font. The conference proceedings will be published by the ACM. Preliminary proceedings will be made available to workshop participants online ahead of the workshop. Printed proceedings will be published and mailed to participants after the workshop. As is customary, papers must not have been published elsewhere and may not be simultaneously under submission at another venue. Poster and demo submissions are due on January 14th, 2008 at 23:59:59 EST. Submissions must include an extended abstract limited to one 8.5x11-inch page in 12pt font. Adaptability has been intensely studied by various areas of engineering including artificial intelligence, control systems and human orientated systems. Adaptability has been set as an important requirement for systems devised to work in new generation global networked and distributed environments like wireless networks, P2P networks, Web systems, multi-agent systems, grids, etc. Such systems are expected to pose new challenges for the development and application of adaptation techniques, due to their special characteristics including: interconnectivity, interactivity, distribution, heterogeneity and fault-tolerance. WLANs, WiMax, Mobile Ad-hoc networks as well as vehicular networks and sensor networks are popular examples. The goal is to provide services "on demand" with minimal planning and management effort as well as with little dependency on existing network infrastructures. On-demand provisioning of services in such infrastructure-less environments is a challenge in itself. Methods for self-organisation are strongly required to enable this vision. Other challenges are posed by the architectures suited for different networks and applications (e.g., specialized architectures for sensor networks) also raising issues with respect to interoperability. WONS is now at its fifth edition and is still confronted with new technical challenges and new application demands. As such it provides a premier forum for high quality paper presentations and lively discussions.
