Adaptability has been described as a characteristic of autonomous behavior and is often related to possessing learning capabilities through analysis of past behaviors and interactions. Adaptability has been intensely studied by various areas of engineering including artificial intelligence, control systems and human centered systems. Adaptability has been set as an important requirement for systems devised to work in new generation global networked and distributed environments like wireless networks, P2P networks, Web systems, multi-agent systems, grids, etc. Such systems are expected to pose new challenges for the development and application of adaptation techniques, due to their special characteristics including: interconnectivity, interactivity, distribution, heterogeneity and fault-tolerance. This special session welcomes submissions covering all aspects of adaptability in networked systems and media, including (but not limited to): - Self-configuring and self-structuring systems - Adaptive control in communication networks - Adaptive networked control systems - Rule-based adaptive systems - Computational intelligence and adaptability - Adaptability in multi-agent systems - Personalized and adaptive hypermedia - Adaptive information provisioning - Adaptive coordination - Adaptability in e-services, including e-learning and e-commerce - Adaptive negotiation - Context-aware systems - Machine learning methods for adaptive systems - Adaptive security systems Papers acceptance will be judged based on their relevance, clarity of presentation, originality and accuracy of results and proposed solutions. It encompasses ad hoc radio networks, sensor networks, wireless mesh networks and mobile multihop relay related to the industrial and standardization activities such as IEEE 802.11s, 802.15.4, 802.16j, etc. Further the multihop communications can be combined with cooperative communications and network coding, which attracted more researchers in this field. The idea behind such multihop communications is to utilize the availability of other nodes or to borrow their transmission capability. This in many cases exceeds the delay caused by the multihop relay, the gain from which is capacity enhancement as well as coverage extension of plain radio networks. Now we turn our attention to the robotics area. In these days, many researchers are noticing group behaviors found in small insects or animals such as ants, birds, and fish, trying to realize such behaviors into the control and coordination of a team of robots with their local interaction. The multiple (usually small) robots communicate each other, sharing the same mission, naturally through wireless communications. In this respect, wireless multihop communication is an excellent candidate for inter-robot information exchange. The main idea of this workshop is to bridge the above two areas (wireless multihop communications and networked robotics) by opening a place for researchers to meet and exchange their ideas. Imagine going about your day, only carrying a small mobile “companion” device. Your companion is small but the world around you is replete with a variety of displays, IO peripherals, sensors, and storage devices. As you near these resources, your companion “borrows” some of them and instantly morphs itself into a full fledged computer. All this happens without the hassles of wires, with utmost simplicity, and robust security. Beyond connectivity, your companion knows you, understands your preferences, tracks your calendar, and even learns your habits. It's capable of taking actions appropriate to your current situations, with little or no inputs from you. The device provides uses that you need and makes use of what is around to provide a higher-level of computing experience. Scope of special issue The purpose of this special issue will be to present a landscape of the state-of-the-art in research and practice of networking for composable context aware computing and connectivity. This special issue will present a collection of articles which discuss (a) high-level software, applications, and middleware that are needed to create and support composable services, (b) design of network protocols and software stacks for automatic composition, (c) the impact of context awareness to simplify network configuration, and (d) Implications for network system architecture and design. Papers should bridge the gap from academic research to early experience or deployment of monitoring infrastructure as embedded network management entities. In particular, papers must fit the target audience of IEEE Network and, therefore, have content that has tutorial value and be comprehensive. With several favorable characteristics, such as dynamic self-organization, self-configuration, self-healing, easy maintenance, high scalability and reliable services, wireless mesh networks have been advocated as a cost-effective approach to support high-speed last mile connectivity and ubiquitous broadband access in the context of home networking, enterprise networking, or community networking. For example, the introducing of mixed (infrastructure and ad hoc) architecture, multi-radio, multi-channel, and multi-antenna, have brought new challenges in the design of physical, MAC, and routing protocols. New application scenarios, such as all-wireless office, are urging researchers to address enhanced QoS support and various security issues in the design of different protocol layers for wireless mesh networks. This workshop aims to bring together the technologies and researchers who share interest in the area of wireless mesh and ad hoc networks. The main purpose is to promote discussions of research and relevant activities in the design of architectures, protocols, algorithms, services, and applications for wireless networks. It also aims at increasing the synergy between academic and industry professionals working in this area. We plan to seek papers that address theoretical, experimental, and work in-progress at the all layers of wireless mesh and ad hoc networks, from application layer to the physical layer. ATC-08 addresses the most innovative research and development in these challenging areas and includes all technical aspects related to autonomic/organic computing (AC/OC) and trusted computing (TC). The research area's utility and challenging nature is demonstrated both by the contributions from a variety of disciplines, such as information theory, discrete mathematics, game theory and finance, as well as from the effort to unify the above and to bring forth the inherent complexities of multi-terminal communication and interaction. In order to increase the network efficiency (Bit/Sec/Hz per Euro/Dollar) while providing the required QoS, a more efficient utilization of the spectral resource across the network will be required. Smart resource allocation schemes should help provide the customer with a smooth user experience while efficiently tackling interference issues in agressive reuse environment, whether in cellular or adhoc scenarios. It is now well-accepted that the total costs of ownership can have a significant effect on the economics of many service offerings, and that unmanageable complexity can threaten life and economic health in the event of failures. Autonomic computing and communications apply notions of feedback control, self-organisation, monitoring and reasoning to the construction and management of large systems. Originally suggested by IBM as a way to control total costs of ownership, the fields have expanded to address the design and implementation of stable, "self-*" algorithms as well as the overall design and analysis of adaptive properties and behaviour. Such self-* systems offer to improve the dynamic responses of systems to changing conditions, simplifying their construction, management and deployment. Although often considered separately, the interdependence of computing and communications in the modern world implies that we apply autonomic techniques on a whole-system basis that encompasses both aspects of systems design. In this special issue we have two aims: to provide a guide to a unified field of autonomic computing and communications through invited contributions addressing cross-system and whole-system techniques; and to present novel research contributions that advance the state of autonomic and self-organising systems design. With this in mind, we invite research contributions including (but most definitely not limited to) the following topics: - techniques for self-organisation at a system level, - foundational science of autonomics and self-organisation, - application of novel techniques to large-scale problems, - self-stabilising and self-optimising algorithms, - evaluations and evaluation methodologies for self-organising systems, - managing trade-offs between system aspects. Over a long period of time, there is a great interest in exploring the ocean and other underwater environments (e.g., rivers, lakes, and reservoirs) for scientific, environmental, commercial, and military purposes. With the increasing demand for acquiring localized precise and real-time knowledge of the harsh underwater environments, current underwater exploration technologies such as SONAR or other remote sensing technologies can no longer meet such needs. Underwater Sensor Network is an emerging network paradigm which provides a promising solution for efficiently exploring the ocean and underwater environments. An underwater sensor network consists of a number of underwater sensor nodes with sensing, data processing, and communication capabilities, which are deployed in a region of interest and collaborate to accomplish a common task, such as underwater environmental monitoring, mine reconnaissance, and military surveillance. Driven by a broad range of potential applications in both civilian and military areas as well as rapid technological advances in microelectronics, wireless communications, and embedded processing, underwater sensor networks have recently received a lot of attention from both academia and industry. Distinguished from terrestrial sensor networks, an underwater sensor network has some unique characteristics that need to be particularly addressed, such as low communication bandwidth, large propagation delay, harsh geographical environment, floating node mobility, and high error probability. These unique characteristics present many challenges for the design of underwater sensor networks, including the design of network architectures and protocols. This has recently motivated a growing interest and a considerable amount of research activities in studying various major issues in the context of network architectures and protocols, including medium access control, topology organization and control, routing and data dissemination, energy efficiency and power control, node localization and tracking, reliable transport and quality of service, and network security and attack defense.
