It is now well-accepted that the total costs of ownership can have a significant effect on the economics of many service offerings, and that unmanageable complexity can threaten life and economic health in the event of failures. Autonomic computing and communications apply notions of feedback control, self-organisation, monitoring and reasoning to the construction and management of large systems. Originally suggested by IBM as a way to control total costs of ownership, the fields have expanded to address the design and implementation of stable, "self-*" algorithms as well as the overall design and analysis of adaptive properties and behaviour. Such self-* systems offer to improve the dynamic responses of systems to changing conditions, simplifying their construction, management and deployment. Although often considered separately, the interdependence of computing and communications in the modern world implies that we apply autonomic techniques on a whole-system basis that encompasses both aspects of systems design. In this special issue we have two aims: to provide a guide to a unified field of autonomic computing and communications through invited contributions addressing cross-system and whole-system techniques; and to present novel research contributions that advance the state of autonomic and self-organising systems design. With this in mind, we invite research contributions including (but most definitely not limited to) the following topics: - techniques for self-organisation at a system level - foundational science of autonomics and self-organisation - application of novel techniques to large-scale problems - self-stabilising and self-optimising algorithms - evaluations and evaluation methodologies for self-organising systems - managing trade-offs between system aspects Contributions addressing issues that cross between the autonomic computing and communication fields are particularly welcome. Such networks fall into the fields of mobile ad-hoc networking (MANET) and delay-tolerant networking (DTN).Opportunistic Networks enable user communication in an environment where disconnection and reconnection are common and link performance is extremely dynamic. They are very suitable to support the situation where network infrastructure has limited coverage and users have "islands of connectivity". By taking advantage of device mobility, information can be stored and forwarded over a wireless link when connection 'opportunities' arise (e.g. an appropriate network contact is met). In this view, traditional Internet connectivity can be considered as a special case of connection opportunity. With numerous emerging applications, Opportunistic Networks allow a huge number of devices to communicate end-to-end without requiring any pre-existing infrastructure and are very suitable to support pervasive networking scenarios. Topics of Interest ----------------- Original papers addressing applications and architecture, systems and protocols design, development and analysis, in all areas related to Opportunistic Networking are solicited. Papers that bring out interesting and novel ideas at an early stage are favored over highly-polish journal-style results. HotMobile's small workshop format makes it ideal for presenting and discussing new directions or controversial approaches. We solicit submissions of position papers that focus primarily on applications and systems and that propose new directions of research, advocate non-traditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate controversy and discussion. We particularly look for position papers containing highly original ideas in the following topic areas, although papers describing other challenges unique to or exacerbated by mobility are also welcome: * Operating system and distributed systems support for mobile computing * Coordination, aggregation, and spontaneous interaction of mobile devices * Novel applications and environments supporting mobility * HCI issues related to mobile computing * Security and privacy of mobile computing * Management, configuration, and deployment of systems supporting mobility Submissions describing new lower-level technologies are welcome if they focus on how the technology is being used or integrated into a system or application. HotMobile 2008 will be a highly interactive workshop. Submissions will be judged based upon originality, technical merit, topical relevance, and likelihood of leading to insightful discussion at the workshop. To encourage an atmosphere conducive to participation, attendance will be limited to 70 participants. Authors of submitted papers and accepted demo proposals will be given first priority, with others able to register on a space-available basis. Paper submissions are due on Oct 16, 2007 at 23:59:59 EDT. Submissions should contain 6 or fewer U.S. letter pages in PDF format. Papers should be single column using 11pt font. The conference proceedings will be published by the ACM. Preliminary proceedings will be made available to workshop participants online ahead of the workshop. Printed proceedings will be published and mailed to participants after the workshop. As is customary, papers must not have been published elsewhere and may not be simultaneously under submission at another venue. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany http://www.tm.uka.de/wons2008 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scope of the conference ----------------------- With the increasing variety of wireless technologies, ubiquitous connectivity and service provisioning more and more complements traditional, infrastructure-based cellular networks. WLANs, WiMax, Mobile Ad-hoc networks as well as vehicular networks and sensor networks are popular examples. The goal is to provide services "on demand" with minimal planning and management effort as well as with little dependency on existing network infrastructures. On-demand provisioning of services in such infrastructure-less environments is a challenge in itself. Methods for self-organisation are strongly required to enable this vision. Other challenges are posed by the architectures suited for different networks and applications (e.g., specialized architectures for sensor networks) also raising issues with respect to interoperability. WONS is now at its fifth edition and is still confronted with new technical challenges and new application demands. As such it provides a premier forum for high quality paper presentations and lively discussions. For this conference we request submissions of high quality research papers on "wireless on demand networks" that provide novel insights on protocol and network design, modeling and performance evaluation, pricing and profitability models, QoS models, practical implementations, service level aspects and Internet integration of wireless networks. By viewing technologies through a Kaleidoscope, these forward looking conferences will also seek to identify new topics for standardization. Arguably no industry undergoes faster changes than the ICT industry. So looking five, ten or more years into the future - What will the network look like? Which services will be offered? How will it affect people's lives? To this end ITU, with technical co-sponsor IEEE Communications Society, is issuing this third CfP. NGN represents one of the most complex transitions ever to have occurred in telecoms. Taking into account new realities in the ICT industry such as the need to converge and optimise operating networks and the extraordinary expansion of digital traffic, NGN will enable a richer set of applications to the end user, as well as allowing operators to benefit from a far simpler architecture and the economies of scale associated with standards. This event focuses on research and practical applications of network measurement and analysis techniques. The conference's goal is to provide a forum for current work in its early stages. Data and tool release are seen as first-class contributions and preference will be given in that direction. Therefore, an award will be given at PAM 2008 for the best paper based on a new dataset that the authors are releasing for community use in subsequent research. To qualify, a paper must significantly utilize a dataset that has been collected for the work presented in the paper. Further, the dataset must be freely available to any researcher; wireless data sets may, for instance, be published through CRAWDAD. Novel datasets are especially encouraged. The awarded paper will be chosen from the set of qualifying papers accepted for the conference by a committee made up of a subset of the program and steering committees. Typical application domains for MCN include critical infrastructure protection, emergency and crisis intervention, and military operations. Such networking is essential for safety, security and economic vitality in our complex world characterized by uncertainty, heterogeneity and emergent behaviors. MCN should comprise the best possible networking technology, infrastructure and services that may alleviate the risk and help save the lives of both the general public and the network users. As advances in pervasive computing, wireless communication, ad hoc and mesh networking and networked sensor systems continue, more opportunities are being opened to mission-critical networks to benefit from these technologies. A primary challenge to the operations of mission-critical networks is to deploy a communication network that is dependable, autonomic, secure, and rapidly deployable. In order to operate effectively, the deployed networks should support services such as location determination of authorized and unauthorized entities, audio and video communication, secure emergency calling and alerting, and in-situ and remote sensing and control in a secure and dependable manner. In addition, efficient operation of such networks that typically include numerous resource-constrained components may benefit from cross-layer optimization, cognition, resource engineering, visual analytics, and service-oriented architecture. Another key feature for mission-critical networking is to support interactions among multiple heterogeneous networks. This workshop solicits high quality technical contributions to the area of mission-critical networking. The manuscript must explicitly address relevance to MCN. Mobile communication has experienced an explosive growth since close to quarter of a century. In particular, the mobile ad hoc network technology has attracted significant attention in the last decade or so due its challenging research problems, and span off such new research areas as mesh-based mobile networks and sensor networks. What characterizes nearly all of those mobile technologies is that during the exchange of information between the source and destination terminals, there exists a set of links which constitutes an end-to-end path over which the information is communicated. In some application scenarios, however, the connectivity between the mobile stations is poor due to very sparse network conditions (low node density) or due to unstable connectivity conditions (interference, fading, etc), and thus it is difficult to form a well-connected mesh network for transmitting data through end-to-end connections. In fact, even if there temporarily exists a path in the network for some portion of the communication, it is likely that the terminals will only be intermittently connected due to mobility. As a result, data are delivered in a store-carry and forward paradigm in such networks. Examples include vehicular networks, mobile sensor networks, deep space communications, etc. In this workshop we aim to explore novel research issues related to Delay (or Disruption)-Tolerant Mobile Networks (DTMN) and bringing together state-of-the-art contributions in this emerging area.
