The _any time, any where_ principle of communicating data, emergence of network content providers and the growing attractiveness of handheld devices, are among the factors that have formed the field of multimedia communication in wireless and mobile video. Recently, this field has brought up a very sophisticated computing paradigm, which is the multimedia transcoding in mobile and wireless networks. This paradigm is usually focused on filling up the gap between the high resources requirements of multimedia applications and the limited bandwidth and capabilities offered by networking protocols and technologies and handheld device. In addition, the advance of multimedia systems has had a major influence in the area of image and video coding. The problem of interactivity and integration of video data with computer, cellular, and television systems is relatively new and subject to a great deal of research world wide. As the number of networks, types of devices, and content representation formats increase, interoperability between different systems and different networks is becoming more important. Thus, multimedia transcoding in wireless and mobile networks must be developed to provide a seamless interaction between content creation and usage. The Overall Objective of the Book ================================= This book is designed to provide the researchers and practitioners with relevant theoretical frameworks and, latest technical and institutional solutions for transcoding multimedia in mobile and wireless networks. An insight into the field of Multimedia and it associated technologies and communication protocols. The background for understanding those emerging applications and system which deploy multimedia transcoding. A viewpoint in the future of transcoding wireless and mobile multimedia and its applications. The book intend to embody state of the art knowledge of transcoding video for mobile and wireless networks as it is practiced today and as it is embedded in the pioneering technologies and leading research proposals. The Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) band has been allocated in the USA at 5.9 GHz for vehicle-to- roadside (V2R) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, while the IEEE 802.11p working group is developing enhancements of 802.11 standards to support ITS, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), vehicular telematics, and infotainment applications. It is anticipated that a single wireless access technology may not suit the needs of all vehicular communication applications, but a heterogeneous wireless networking platform needs to be developed and optimized. Numerous exciting research challenges exist for designing wireless networking protocols for vehicular communication applications. Significant advancements in these research areas are expected in near future. The objectives of this workshop are to discuss the challenges in designing wireless networking protocols for vehicular networks and ITS, different ITS applications and services based on wireless communications and networking technologies, and present the recent advances in these areas. With the objective and a very timely topic, the workshop is expected to attract lot of interest from the researchers in the area of wireless communication networks as well as from ITS designers and planners. The technical issues which will be addressed in this workshop include - Vehicular wireless communications applications and services for ITS - Vehicular telematics based on emerging wireless technologies - Multimedia content distribution in vehicular networks - Architectures for V2R communications - Heterogeneous wireless network architecture for V2V and V2R communications - Physical, medium access control , radio link, and routing protocols - Cross-layer wireless protocol analysis, design, and optimization for vehicular networks - Cognitive radio protocols for vehicular networks - Security protocols for vehicular networks - Privacy issues in vehicular networks - Vehicular network management - Performance modeling and simulation - Field experiments and test-bed results Accepted papers will be published in the ACM International Conference Proceedings Series and will be made available in ACM Digital Library, as well as indexed by EI and ISI Index. ---------------- Paper Submission ---------------- Manuscripts which present original materials not previously published in, or currently under review by, another conference or journal, are invited. New technologies are being used to provide improved support for elderly and home bound people in their homes and in assisted living environments. The overall goal of these initiatives is to improve the quality of life by providing customized support to people in need of assistance. The main challenge is to provide this support according to the user's own specific situation in a non-intrusive and respectful way. These new technologies enable the automation of the observation and support for elderly and home bound people through the use of sensors, actuators, distributed intelligence, databases, ubiquitous connectivity and friendly adaptive interfaces, all connected mainly via a variety of wireless networking technologies. The ultimate goal is a system that can adapt to the users needs, helping them get through their daily routine in a way that is effective in providing support where needed without making them feel humiliated by excessive attention. To provide such support, it will be necessary to combine efforts from many areas of computer science, including networking, distributed systems, security, data management, HCI, AI and middleware. Given the inherent use of mobile and wireless communication and the need for comprehensive distributed systems as well as the multi-disciplinary nature of solutions for healthcare and assisted living environments, the goal of HealthNet is to provide a forum for the cross-area interactions that will be necessary for successful systems and applications. The specific focus of HealthNet will be on understanding what it takes to provide effective systems and communication support for healthcare and assisted living environments. Although the systems and networking community is very good at providing effective solutions to satisfying application requirements, they require input from experts in other disciples, including HCI, middleware, security, privacy and social networking, to provide a more accurate understanding of the specific requirements for these environments. Therefore, HealthNet aims to attract researchers working on cross-disciplinary projects, with a focus on understanding and supporting the requirements of these complex applications. Authors are invited to submit papers presenting new research related to the support of healthcare and assisted living environments. In particular the aspect of quality of service is becoming more important as applications are turned into products. This workshop focuses on the issue of reliability in data intensive wireless sensor networks. It is held just one day prior to the Fourth IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor Systems (MASS'07) in the pleasant town of Pisa, Italy. This event provides an ideal opportunity to meet leading experts and to discuss new ideas. The main objective of PARIS'07 is to bring together international researchers with the aim of encouraging the exchange of ideas and experience and to find new research directions to follow. It will represent an international forum to give an overview of the most recent trends. WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION An new emerging class of applications has very high bandwidth requirements. In some of these applications sensors measure data at rates 100 Hz and higher. At the same time sensors such as cameras are used that produce high volumes of data. Examples of applications that show these characteristics are structural monitoring of buildings, volcano and coastline monitoring, and Surveillance of public transport systems. Protocols and algorithms developed for lightly-loaded sensor networks can not be directly applied to this domain. Besides being data intensive, some applications require that the measured data is reliably transported towards a sink. A reliable service is needed if the data from all sensors is used to build a model, where only the entirety of the data allows a correct interpretation. Any loss of data items requires extrapolation reducing the quality of the analysis or even rendering the analysis impossible. The reliable transportation of high volumes of sampled data through a multi-hop network with limited resources towards a sink has not received much attention until now and is a real challenge. Also it is not obvious which reliability criteria to use, in same applications statistical guarantees may also suffices. These questions are part of the more general topic of quality of service for wireless sensor networks. While this topic has received a lot of attention in wired communications systems, there are only a few contributions dedicated to sensor networks. The objective of this workshop is to provide an opportunity for academic researchers and industry practitioners to present and discuss experiences and research results for this new emerging field and to find new research directions to follow. TOPICS PARIS'07 seeks original papers describing research in all areas described above. Papers should not have been published or be in submission at another workshop or conference. Topics include but are not limited to: * Quality of service for sensor networks * Intelligent and adaptive scheduling mechanisms * Power management for data intensive applications * Energy-aware reliable transport protocols * Probabilistic reliability * Fault tolerance in sensor networks * In-Network aggregation schemes * Distributed data compression * Bulk data transportation * Stream processing in sensor networks Submissions should present original reports of substantive new work. Papers should properly place the work within the field, cite related work, and clearly indicate the innovative aspects of the work and its contribution to the field. In addition to regular papers, we also solicit submissions of position papers articulating high-level architectural visions, describing challenging future directions, or criticizing current design wisdom. Position papers should contribute perspective rather than performance numbers, wisdom rather than knowledge, and guidance rather than results. Furthermore, we encourage reports on lessons learned from real-world deployments and best practices for different applications areas. All submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least three reviewers from an international program committee. Accepted submissions will appear in the main conference proceedings published by the IEEE. SUBMISSION INFORMATION All submissions must be full papers in .pdf or .ps (PostScript) format. Papers must be uploaded to the EDAS conference system by April 30, 2007, and must not exceed 6 single-spaced, two-column pages (4 pages for position papers and experience reports) using at least 11 point size fonts on 8.5 x 11 inch pages. It has also brought many challenges for the communication and networking community to address. On one hand we see present day mobile devices are capable of providing many services that required several devices before. For example, most cell phones nowadays provide high speed data access, still and video cameras, PDA functionality, etc. These advances in device sophistication and service offerings, including wireless hotspots, have made a difference in the way we communicate. With increased user mobility and user's desire to always be connected, we have seen a growing interest in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Body Area Networks (BANs). These networks can be tuned and applied meaningfully for individual users and their requirements. On the other hand the Internet has changed our way of interacting dramatically. These two major communication areas are having an in-depth influence on the way we communicate; it is worth considering them 'together' as the future communication vehicle. We have identified the following major topics under which we try to categorize the submissions. Personalized Networks is a concrete vision of the future networks, yet very current, in the field of communications. It attracts researchers from both wired and wireless domains. This workshop is an ideal platform to share a vision of where we are heading, interact, and strongly advocate an exciting new avenue for researchers and practitioners in the field of communication. Further, the final program will consist of carefully selected - with at least three peer reviews - and high quality submissions with a large emphasis on new ideas rather than incremental contributions to the field. In komplexen Anwendungen wie zur Mauterfassung gibt es erste Ansätze einer kontextbewussten Datenverarbeitung. Technische Innovationen wie RFID und preisgünstige mobile Computer erlauben es, Kontext-Informationen (wie zum Beispiel über Sensoren), und deren mobile Verarbeitung stärker zu nutzen. So kann Software kontextabhängig über eine vorherige Antizipation hinausgehend dynamisch angepasst werden. Besonders in den Bereichen B2B und B2C könnten so flexiblere Logistikanwendungen und eventuell längere Produktlebenszyklen erzielt werden. Die nächsten Schritte sind geprägt durch dynamische Vernetzung und Adaption bestehender und neuentwickelter Anwendungen. Ziele sind: Kostensenkung, Effizienzsteigerung, wie auch eine Verbesserung der Kundenzufriedenheit. Neben diesen Chancen müssen ebenso die Risiken betrachtet werden, wie etwa Einflüsse auf Datenschutz, Privatheit, veränderte Arbeitsprozesse sowie ökologische Wirkungen. LCN main conference CALL FOR PAPERS LCN invites you to Europe for the second time in its history! The IEEE LCN conference is the premier conference on the leading edge of practical computer networking. LCN is a highly interactive conference that enables an effective interchange of results and ideas among researchers, users, and product developers. During 32 years of this conference, major developments from high-speed local networks to the global Internet to specialized sensor networks have been reported at this conference. We encourage you to submit original papers describing research results or practical solutions in leading edge topics. Paper topics include, but are not limited to: Ad hoc and sensor networks Adaptive applications Embedded networks Authentication, authorization, accounting High-speed access networks Congestion and flow control Home and SOHO networks Context-aware network services IPv6 networks IPv6 deployment and migration Local area networks Mobility management Optical networks Multimedia and real-time communication Overlay networks Network management Peer-to-peer networks Network reliability and security Personal and wearable networks Network traffic characterization Storage area networks Performance evaluation/engineering Ubiquitous networking Performance measurement and tuning Wireless networks Quality-of-Service provisioning Authors are invited to submit full or short papers for presentation at the conference. Full papers (no more than 8 camera-ready pages, 10 pt font in IEEE transactions format) should present novel perspectives within the general scope of the conference. Short papers are an opportunity to present preliminary or interim results and are limited to 2 camera-ready pages in length. Short papers will be presented in a poster format and are published in the proceedings. All papers must include title, complete contact information for all authors, abstract, and keywords on the cover page. PAPER SUBMISSION: Papers must be submitted electronically in PDF. All submission instructions will be posted on the conference website.
