Symposium on Modeling and Optimization in Mobile, Ad Hoc, and Wireless Networks http://www.wiopt.org April 16-20, 2007, Limassol, Cyprus Scope of the Symposium =================================== The design of wireless networks offers challenges not present in fixed networks: both the offered traffic and the network capacity depend on the mobility of the nodes. The designs should not only be functioning correctly, they are also expected to optimize the performance with respect to many criteria, such as energy efficiency, quality of service, and capacity utilization. This symposium intends to bring together researchers and practitioners working on optimization of wireless network design and operations. It welcomes different perspectives, including performance analysis, protocol design, wireless communication, and optimization theory. Contributions to this conference should improve the state-of-the-art in design, analysis, dimensioning and operations of wireless network by providing insights into theoretical aspects as well as providing practical methods and tools. All forms of wireless networks are of interest: from cellular wide-area and local-area networks to dense and sparse ad-hoc networks; domain specific vehicular, public-transport and personal-area networks as well as application-specific sensor networks. Special-purpose, sophisticated architectures of network systems and subsystems are necessary for the development and deployment of emerging and future networks and network services, because they constitute the only option for network equipment (residing at the network core or at its edge) that implement standardized network protocols in performance demanding environments. In this special issue, we focus on this increasingly important technical field. The last two decades have been characterized by significant advances in networking, leading to the development of a wide range of high-speed networks both in the wide and local area. The advances in cable, local loop, wireless and mobile networking in addition to the prevalence of Internet-based technologies that serve as the unifying networking substrate have enabled the development and deployment of network services (from digital libraries and on-line shopping to multi-player, real-time games) to an ever increasing populace. Furthermore, and in addition to supporting many of the same networking services, end-user network-enabled devices will be supporting pervasive and ubiquitous computing services and applications that will be facilitated by the widespread presence of networked embedded systems. The increasing requirements on packet networking have led to the development and deployment of complex network systems, i.e., systems that execute one or more network protocol stacks, such as switches, adapters, routers, etc. Effectively, these systems have evolved to specialized, complex computer systems composed of (possibly several) sophisticated high-speed processors, running operating systems that manage a large number of network (I/O) interfaces and executing several (possibly non-identical) protocol stacks. Additionally, all types of network-attached systems (from core network systems to personal devices) require advanced architectures for their network subsystems as well as for their integration with their computing and service components; for example, high-performance computing systems require high performance network attachments, while evolving consumer network devices --such as mobile computing systems, PDA’s and even mobile phones, which combine processors, memory, operating systems, browsers, office applications, etc.-- require reliable, secure, low power network subsystems with quality-of-service support, in order to satisfy the requirements of the various business- and residential-/entertainment-oriented applications they execute. The operational demands of all these network systems and subsystems place significant requirements on performance as well as on other system parameters, such as security, power consumption, etc., leading to the development of innovative architectures and components. Characteristic examples of the recent developments in this area are innovative high-speed adapters with specialized memory managers, multiprocessor based network adapters, network processors, specialized content addressable memories, virtual output queuing switches, QoS schedulers, security subsystems, network on chip solutions, etc. Author guidelines: ------------------ To expose and promote further this technical area to the broad networking community, it is our goal to publish original research and survey articles presenting the latest advances in network system and subsystem architectures. In particular, one area of mobile communication networks, the ad hoc networks, has attracted significant attention due to its challenging research problems. The ad hoc networks technology has spun off new research areas, such as mesh-based mobile networks and sensor networks. What characterizes nearly all of those mobile technologies is that during the exchange of information between the source and destination terminals, there exists a set of links which constitutes an end-to-end path over which the information can be exchanged. However, in some application scenarios, the connectivity between the mobile terminals does not always allow for creation of such a path. This could be due to very sparse network conditions (low node density) or due to unstable connectivity conditions (interference, fading, etc). Thus, in such scenarios, it would be often difficult, or even impossible, to form a well-connected mesh network for transmitting data through established end-to-end connections. In fact, even if there temporarily exists a path in the network for some portion of the communication, it is likely that the terminals will only be intermittently connected due to mobility. A simple example is that in a WLAN environment, mobile users may be connected to an AP for a while before moving out of its coverage, and then getting connected to a different AP. More examples are found in environments without access to infrastructure at all. In this workshop we aim to explore novel research issues related to intermittently connected mobile ad hoc networks (ICMAN), which encompasses the scope of delay or disruption tolerant networks (or DTN), and bringing together state-of-the-art contributions in this emerging area. These activities over different network systems have brought security concerns on an unprecedented scale. Security is an important issue for wireless and mobile ad hoc and sensor networks (MANETs) especially for the security-sensitive applications such as in military, homeland security, financial institutions and many other areas. Such security threats take advantage of protocol weaknesses as well as operating systems' vulnerabilities to attack Internet applications. Regards, Fabian Rochner ================================================ Call for Contributions Special Session on Organic Computing, IEEE ISCAS, May 2007, New Orleans (USA) Organic Computing investigates as a science how Life creates goal-oriented reactions to the dynamic environment through an evolving hierarchy of internal processes. In the current practice of Algorithmic Computing, reality is off-line modelled and analysed to conceive functions that will handle pre-determined (domains of) situations. Novel situations are difficult to handle adequately and may lead to abnormal or uncontrollable behaviour. The basic ingredients of Organic Computing relate to the guided self-organization by which a typical Life system grows and is maintained in support of dealing with novel subjects. By employing a large number of simple components interacting with each other in an orchestrated way, information processing becomes robust, self-organising, adaptable, decentralized, asynchronous, fault-tolerant and evolvable. Organic Computing is a rising topic in Embedded Real-Time Systems, where it boosts advances in the Intelligent Home, Office and Factory by sensory & regulating networks through wearable, swarming and autonomic applications. The road to reality will lead over low-power, low-cost and low-datarate networks and related nodes. Organic Computing can be facilitated by Cellular (Neural) Networks, but are not confined to that. The Special Session will focus on new developments in the hardware & software aspects of the Circuits that create organic behaviour and the evolving Systems. Proposals for contributions to this special session (tutorial or regular) can be mailed before 5 September 2006 to the session organizers Lambert Spaanenburg (lspaanenburg(a)ieee.org) and Peter Szolgay (szolgay(a)sztaki.hu) and should contain at minimum the title, authors and abstract of the proposed paper. Some models of context information already exist, however many research issues related to context information modeling are still not fully addressed. A generic approach to context modeling is needed in order to capture various features of context information, including a variety of types of context information, dependencies between context information, quality of context information and context histories. Hybrid approaches to context modeling -- such as approaches that combine ontology-based modeling with alternative modeling techniques -- also need to be explored, as many of the current solutions are too limited to capture the richness of context information and support the necessary reasoning. In addition, to ease software engineering problems encountered in programming context-aware applications, appropriate abstractions are necessary to support discovery and reuse of context information, as well as scalable methods of context processing and management. It is also necessary to increase user acceptance of autonomously adapting applications by developing methods of balancing autonomy of context-aware applications with user control. This workshop’s aim is to advance the state-of-the-art in context information modeling, reasoning and management, and in methods that balance autonomy of context-aware applications with user control. The goal is to identify concepts, theories and methods applicable to context modeling and reasoning, as well as system-oriented issues related to the design and implementation of context-aware systems. CoMoRea will provide a forum for researchers to present and discuss recent research results and ongoing work. A strong emphasis will be put on experiences with context modeling and the management of the context information. The workshop will foster exchange of experiences and collaboration among researchers. These include scenarios where seamless access to a computing infrastructure is provided, scenarios where interaction and data sharing among mobile users occur in mobile ad hoc networks, and hybrid scenarios that combine these two. The continued miniaturization of computing devices along with improvements in the performance/price ratio enable new services and applications, e.g., in environmental monitoring and transportation. Although substantial research has been conducted, this area remains ripe with open research challenges, e.g., in relation to context-aware computing, such as location-based services or ubiquitous computing applications; mobile applications in hybrid networks; and consistency and data processing in sensor networks. The conference focuses on research contributions within data management in relation to mobile, wearable, and pervasive computing. The conference invites submissions within this area. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following. The aim is providing ubiquitous connectivity and network centric services, with the important attribute of service provisioning "on demand" with minimal planning and management effort as well as with little dependency on existing network infrastructures. Even in the cellular network world, providers often point out their capacity to offer ad-hoc services that are tailored for a specific event or community, e.g. gaming on cellular networks. On the other extreme, peer2peer systems can provide innovative communication services to a community on ad-hoc networks, requiring almost no infrastructure. Ambient intelligence and ubiquitous computing are also part of this broad vision of "on demand" networking, providing services to users when they need it, albeit the final user might not even be aware if it! WONS is now at its fourth edition, and the community interest is still on the rise, providing a premier forum for high quality papers presentation and lively discussion. For this conference we request submissions of high quality research papers on "wireless on demand networks" that provide novel insights on protocol and network design, modeling and performance evaluation, pricing and profitability models, QoS models, practical implementations, service level aspects and Internet integration of wireless networks.
