One of the main challenges to the operations of first responders and critical infrastructures is to deploy a communication network that is dependable, secure, and rapidly deployable. In order to operate effectively, the deployed network supports services such as location determination, audio and video communication, and in site and remote sensing. Another key feature for first responders and critical infrastructures networks is to support interactions among multiple heterogen- eous networks. This workshop provides a forum for researchers, industry, and government agencies to discuss the challenges facing the design, deployment and operation- al issues for next generation network support for first responders and critical infrastructure. Therefore, in recent years a growing number of effective solutions for problems related to networked systems have been proposed by taking inspiration from the observation of natural systems and processes such as natural selection, insect societies, immune systems, cultural systems, collective behaviors of groups of animals/cells, etc. The aim of the workshop is to provide a forum to present the cutting edge research on Nature-inspired approaches to network-related problems. The workshop sought to provide a deep insight into the effective potentialities of Nature-inspired design to tackle the numerous problems arising in networked systems, and, in particular, in modern telecommunication networks. ------------------------------------ Areas of Interests and Contributions ------------------------------------ EvoCOMNET 2007 solicits contributions dealing with the application of ideas from natural processes and systems to the solution of problems of practical and/or theoretical interests in all domains related to the analysis, design, control, management, protection, and testing of network systems. Along with the widespread adoption of broadband residential access and the increasing demand of multimedia service over the Internet, we are now witnessing the emergence of a new class of popular P2P applications, namely, P2P audio and video streaming. Popular P2P video streaming applications have successfully demonstrated the support of thousands of concurrent peers per channel at bit rates in excess of 400 kbps. While traditional P2P file distribution applications are targeted for elastic data transfers, P2P streaming focuses on the efficient delivery of audio and video content under tight timing requirements. Still in its infancy, both live and on-demand P2P streaming present many research challenges. To date, a number of architectures have been suggested by using either the tree-based push approach (e.g., Narada and SplitStream) or the mesh-based pull approach (e.g., CoolStream) which basically divides the media content into blocks for trading among peers. Further improvements are possible by taking advantage of advanced source and channel coding techniques such as layered coding, multiple description codes, fountain codes, and network coding. Given the initial success of P2P live streaming, questions still remain about how to extend the existing peer-to-peer models for more advanced applications with more stringent requirements such as video-on-demand services and how to support live and on-demand streaming in the same P2P network. Furthermore, with the wide deployment of wireless networks (WLAN, ad hoc, and 3G networks) and various wireless backhaul technologies (wireless mesh networks and WiMax), there are still open research challenges on how to realize a large-scale P2P media streaming over highly dynamic wireless channels and with user mobility. This special issue solicits original state-of-the-art works addressing all aspects related to supporting peer-to-peer multimedia content distribution service from both theoretical and implementation aspects. It aims at putting together a collection of the latest high-quality research results in this area. Organic Computing is based on the insight that in the near future we will be surrounded by large collections of autonomous systems equipped with sensors and actuators to be aware of their environment, to communicate freely, and to organize themselves in order to support people at work and in their everyday life. This presence of networks of intelligent systems in our environment opens fascinating application areas but, at the same time, bears the problem of their controllability. Hence, we have to construct these systems - which we increasingly depend on - as robust, safe, flexible, and trustworthy as possible. In particular, a strong orientation of these systems towards human needs as opposed to a pure implementation of the technologically possible seems absolutely central. In order to achieve these goals, our technical systems will have to act more independently, flexibly, and autonomously, i.e. they will have to exhibit life-like properties. We call those systems "organic". Hence, an "Organic Computing System" is a technical system, which adapts dynamically to the current conditions of its environment. It will be self-organizing, self-configuring, self-healing, self-protecting, self-explaining, and context-aware. The vision of Organic Computing and its fundamental concepts arose independently in different research areas like Neuroscience, Molecular Biology, and Computer Engineering. Central aspects of Organic Computing systems have been and will be inspired by an analysis of information processing in biological systems. The focus of this OC workshop will be on technical applications, tools and architectures for organic computing systems. ATC-07 addresses the most innovative research and development in these challenging areas and includes all technical aspects related to autonomic/organic computing (AC/OC) and trusted computing (TC). By allowing peers serving each other in the network, p2p technology overcomes many limitations in traditional client-server paradigm to achieve user and bandwidth scalabilities. It has been shown that performance of a properly-designed p2p network actually improves, rather than deteriorates, with the increase of population size. Peer-to-Peer technology is promising for large content distribution as demonstrated by a number of proof-of-concept prototypes in both academia and companies. In a p2p multimedia streaming system, multimedia contents are delivered to a large pool of distributed users with low delay, high quality and high robustness. Fueled by advances in networking and compression technologies, p2p multimedia streaming has experienced much initial deployment success for applications such as Internet TV (IPTV), video conferencing, and surveillance. It is the key to address the emerging needs of large-scale digital IPTV, interactive videos, interactive games and other next-generation broadcast-based or personalized multimedia services. A scalable peer-to-peer multimedia system should support many hosts, possibly in excess of hundreds or even millions, with diverse heterogeneity in bandwidth, capability, storage, network, and mobility. It should also be able to support various applications under dynamic user arrival and departure, frequent host failures and unavailability, and unpredictable user behaviors, network traffic and congestion. In a p2p streaming networks, users should be able to share, search, and access contents in a distributed and efficient manner. To achieve these goals, it is particularly important to address the challenges in architecture design, network/transport support, resource discovery and content delivery mechanisms. Scope of Contributions This feature issue is devoted to original surveys and tutorials on these emerging issues in P2P streaming. Authors are invited to submit complete unpublished original articles that are not under review in any other conference or journal. The first page of each paper should include the names and affiliations of the authors, i.e., the submissions should not be anonymous. Submissions will be judged on originality, significance, interest, clarity, relevance, and technical correctness. Accepted papers will be shepherded by a member of the program committee. MobiSys, like most conferences and journals, requires that papers must not be submitted simultaneously to any other conference or publication, that submissions must not be previously published, and that accepted papers must not be subsequently published elsewhere. The main objectives of Networking 2007 are to bring together active and proficient members of the networking community, from both academia and industry, to discuss recent advances in this broad and fast-evolving field of telecommunications, and to highlight key-issues, identify trends and refresh vision in the field of telecommunications. The conference objectives will be pursued through technical sessions, keynote talks, and tutorials offered by invited experts, as well as panel discussions on hot topics. The technical sessions will be structured into three tracks. Authors are encouraged to submit full papers describing original, previously unpublished, complete research, not currently under review by another conference or journal, addressing state-of-the-art research and development in all areas of computer networking. Papers must be submitted electronically via EDAS. Detailed submission instructions are available on the conference website. All papers will be reviewed by the technical program committee. Accepted papers will appear in the conference proceedings published by Springer-Verlag in the LNCS series. There will be a Best Paper Award for the best submitted paper.
