Statische Konfiguration und manuelle Steuerung der Systeme werden in Zukunft der wachsenden Größe, Dynamik und Ubiquität der IT-Systeme nicht mehr gerecht. Stattdessen sind dynamische Anpassungsfähigkeit, autonomes Handeln und Selbstverwaltung gefordert. Häufig wird dieser Ansatz von Beispielen aus der Natur genährt: Ameisenkolonien und Fischschwärme dienen als Inspiration und Vorbilder für die Entwicklung selbstorganisierender und anpassungsfähiger Systeme. Die gegenwärtige fachliche Diskussion wird jedoch von Kontroversen beherrscht. Nicht einmal die Grundbegriffe sind unstrittig und es ist weitgehend unklar, wie diese so genannten Selbst-Eigenschaften in neue Systeme zielgerichtet eingebaut werden können. Der Workshop widmet sich den Themen Selbstorganisation, Kontextsensitivität und Adaptivität in verteilten Systemen. Dabei sind alle Belange verteilter Systeme von der Kommunikation über die Middleware bis zu den Anwendungen von Interesse. Der Themenbereich ist absichtlich weit abgesteckt, damit die inhärente Vielfalt und die zahlreichen Querbezüge diskutiert werden können. Nur so kann sich die Informatik diesem ungemein vielschichtigen Problemfeld nähern und zu konstruktiven Vorschlägen gelangen. Ziel Ziel des Workshops ist eine Fortsetzung der lebhaften Diskussion, die im Rahmen des gleichnamigen KuVS-Arbeitsgesprächs an der Universität Kassel am 23./24. März 2006 begonnen wurde (siehe www.self-org.info/SAKS). Die Bestandsaufnahme von Forschungs- und Entwicklungsaktivitäten, die im deutschsprachigen Raum auf dem beschriebenen Gebiet bearbeitet werden, soll fortgesetzt werden. Wir hoffen, dass der Workshop die Kooperation der beteiligten Akteure weiter stärkt und mittelfristig zu einer stärkeren internationalen Sichtbarkeit der deutschsprachigen Forschung und Entwicklung auf diesem Gebiet führt. Insbesondere ist die Teilnahme von Vertretern aus der Industrie erwünscht, um den Kontakt zur industriellen Praxis zu intensivieren und gemeinsame Interessen auszuloten. Furthermore, and in addition to supporting many of the same networking services, end-user network-enabled devices will be supporting pervasive and ubiquitous computing services and applications that will be facilitated by the widespread presence of networked embedded systems. The increasing requirements on packet networking have led to the development and deployment of complex network systems, i.e., systems that execute one or more network protocol stacks, such as switches, adapters, routers, etc. Effectively, these systems have evolved to specialized, complex computer systems composed of (possibly several) sophisticated high-speed processors, running operating systems that manage a large number of network (I/O) interfaces and executing several (possibly non-identical) protocol stacks. Additionally, all types of network-attached systems (from core network systems to personal devices) require advanced architectures for their network subsystems as well as for their integration with their computing and service components; for example, high-performance computing systems require high performance network attachments, while evolving consumer network devices --such as mobile computing systems, PDA’s and even mobile phones, which combine processors, memory, operating systems, browsers, office applications, etc.-- require reliable, secure, low power network subsystems with quality-of-service support, in order to satisfy the requirements of the various business- and residential-/entertainment-oriented applications they execute. The operational demands of all these network systems and subsystems place significant requirements on performance as well as on other system parameters, such as security, power consumption, etc., leading to the development of innovative architectures and components. Characteristic examples of the recent developments in this area are innovative high-speed adapters with specialized memory managers, multiprocessor based network adapters, network processors, specialized content addressable memories, virtual output queuing switches, QoS schedulers, security subsystems, network on chip solutions, etc. Author guidelines: ------------------ To expose and promote further this technical area to the broad networking community, it is our goal to publish original research and survey articles presenting the latest advances in network system and subsystem architectures. In particular, one area of mobile communication networks, the ad hoc networks, has attracted significant attention due to its challenging research problems. The ad hoc networks technology has spun off new research areas, such as mesh-based mobile networks and sensor networks. What characterizes nearly all of those mobile technologies is that during the exchange of information between the source and destination terminals, there exists a set of links which constitutes an end-to-end path over which the information can be exchanged. However, in some application scenarios, the connectivity between the mobile terminals does not always allow for creation of such a path. This could be due to very sparse network conditions (low node density) or due to unstable connectivity conditions (interference, fading, etc). Thus, in such scenarios, it would be often difficult, or even impossible, to form a well-connected mesh network for transmitting data through established end-to-end connections. In fact, even if there temporarily exists a path in the network for some portion of the communication, it is likely that the terminals will only be intermittently connected due to mobility. A simple example is that in a WLAN environment, mobile users may be connected to an AP for a while before moving out of its coverage, and then getting connected to a different AP. More examples are found in environments without access to infrastructure at all. In this workshop we aim to explore novel research issues related to intermittently connected mobile ad hoc networks (ICMAN), which encompasses the scope of delay or disruption tolerant networks (or DTN), and bringing together state-of-the-art contributions in this emerging area. These activities over different network systems have brought security concerns on an unprecedented scale. Security is an important issue for wireless and mobile ad hoc and sensor networks (MANETs) especially for the security-sensitive applications such as in military, homeland security, financial institutions and many other areas. Such security threats take advantage of protocol weaknesses as well as operating systems' vulnerabilities to attack Internet applications. Theses attacks involve, for example, distributed denials of services, buffer overflows, viruses, and worms, where they cause an increasingly greater technical and economic damage. With regard to such cyber security aspects, there is an increasing demand for measures to guarantee and fully attain the authentication, confidentiality, data integrity, privacy, access control, non repudiation, and availability of system services. Regards, Fabian Rochner ================================================ Call for Contributions Special Session on Organic Computing, IEEE ISCAS, May 2007, New Orleans (USA) Organic Computing investigates as a science how Life creates goal-oriented reactions to the dynamic environment through an evolving hierarchy of internal processes. In the current practice of Algorithmic Computing, reality is off-line modelled and analysed to conceive functions that will handle pre-determined (domains of) situations. Novel situations are difficult to handle adequately and may lead to abnormal or uncontrollable behaviour. The basic ingredients of Organic Computing relate to the guided self-organization by which a typical Life system grows and is maintained in support of dealing with novel subjects. By employing a large number of simple components interacting with each other in an orchestrated way, information processing becomes robust, self-organising, adaptable, decentralized, asynchronous, fault-tolerant and evolvable. Time development is given by the reaction-diffusion principle, while reaction represents local production/extinction of the state, and diffusion means a transport process, tending to dampen any in-homogeneity of the neighbourhood. Organic Computing is a rising topic in Embedded Real-Time Systems, where it boosts advances in the Intelligent Home, Office and Factory by sensory & regulating networks through wearable, swarming and autonomic applications. The road to reality will lead over low-power, low-cost and low-datarate networks and related nodes. Organic Computing can be facilitated by Cellular (Neural) Networks, but are not confined to that. The Special Session will focus on new developments in the hardware & software aspects of the Circuits that create organic behaviour and the evolving Systems. Proposals for contributions to this special session (tutorial or regular) can be mailed before 5 September 2006 to the session organizers Lambert Spaanenburg (lspaanenburg(a)ieee.org) and Peter Szolgay (szolgay(a)sztaki.hu) and should contain at minimum the title, authors and abstract of the proposed paper. Recently significant efforts have been made to enhance and integrate the latest wireless communications technologies into the vehicle and transportation systems to enable safety and information applications. For example, significant industrial and governmental efforts are underway to push from passive-safety to active-safety by employing advanced networking functions in vehicles and highway infrastructure. When such communications and networking capabilities are installed, the vehicle itself can interact intelligently with other vehicles and the highway system, achieving a much higher degree of vehicular safety. Such capabilities can also support many exciting new applications, such as traffic management, vehicle diagnostics and mobile commerce. . The increasing importance of vehicle and infrastructure communications is recognized by governments, highway authorities, automobile manufacturers and the academic community. This one-day workshop intends to bring together researchers, professionals, and practitioners to address recent developments and challenges in deploying vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-with-infrastructure networking technologies, and their applications including safety-assistance and driver-convenience. Some models of context information already exist, however many research issues related to context information modeling are still not fully addressed. A generic approach to context modeling is needed in order to capture various features of context information, including a variety of types of context information, dependencies between context information, quality of context information and context histories. Hybrid approaches to context modeling -- such as approaches that combine ontology-based modeling with alternative modeling techniques -- also need to be explored, as many of the current solutions are too limited to capture the richness of context information and support the necessary reasoning. In addition, to ease software engineering problems encountered in programming context-aware applications, appropriate abstractions are necessary to support discovery and reuse of context information, as well as scalable methods of context processing and management. It is also necessary to increase user acceptance of autonomously adapting applications by developing methods of balancing autonomy of context-aware applications with user control. This workshop’s aim is to advance the state-of-the-art in context information modeling, reasoning and management, and in methods that balance autonomy of context-aware applications with user control. The goal is to identify concepts, theories and methods applicable to context modeling and reasoning, as well as system-oriented issues related to the design and implementation of context-aware systems. CoMoRea will provide a forum for researchers to present and discuss recent research results and ongoing work. A strong emphasis will be put on experiences with context modeling and the management of the context information. The workshop will foster exchange of experiences and collaboration among researchers. In particular, the following topics are of interest to this workshop: * Context modeling techniques * Domain-specific context models * Ontology-based approaches to context modeling and reasoning * Hybrid context models (integration of various modeling techniques) * Advanced issues in context modeling, including issues of information quality and ambiguity * Context reasoning algorithms, their complexity and accuracy * Discovery and reuse of context information * Privacy of context information * Distributed and scalable context management * Experiences with using context models to build context-aware applications * Tool support for context modeling and development of context model-based applications * Balance of autonomy with user control Publication ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Submitted papers will be refereed by the workshop Program Committee.
