Such complexity is getting even more critical with the ubiquitous permeation of embedded devices and other pervasive systems. To cope with the growing and ubiquitous complexity, Autonomic Computing (AC) focuses on self-manageable computing and communication systems that exhibit self-awareness, self-configuration, self-optimization, self-healing, self-protection and other self-x operations to the maximum extent possible without human intervention or guidance. Organic Computing (OC) additionally emphasizes natural-analogue concepts like self-organization and controlled emergence. Any autonomic or organic system must be trustworthy to avoid the risk of losing control and retain confidence that the system will not fail. Trust and/or distrust relationships in the Internet and in pervasive infrastructures are key factors to enable dynamic interaction and cooperation of various users, systems and services. Trusted/Trustworthy Computing (TC) aims at making computing and communication systems as well as services available, predictable, traceable, controllable, assessable, sustainable, dependable, persist-able, security/privacy protect-able, etc. A series of grand challenges exist to achieve practical self-manageable autonomic systems with truly trustworthy services. ATC-07 addresses the most innovative research and development in these challenging areas and includes all technical aspects related to autonomic/organic computing (AC/OC) and trusted computing (TC). ATC-07 is a successor of the First Int'l Workshop on Trusted and Autonomic Ubiquitous and Embedded Systems (TAUES-05, Japan, Dec.), the Int'l Workshop on Trusted and Autonomic Computing Systems (TACS-06, Austria, Apr.), and the 3rd International Conference on Autonomic and Trusted Computing (ATC-06, Three Gorges, China, Sep.). By allowing peers serving each other in the network, p2p technology overcomes many limitations in traditional client-server paradigm to achieve user and bandwidth scalabilities. It has been shown that performance of a properly-designed p2p network actually improves, rather than deteriorates, with the increase of population size. Peer-to-Peer technology is promising for large content distribution as demonstrated by a number of proof-of-concept prototypes in both academia and companies. In a p2p multimedia streaming system, multimedia contents are delivered to a large pool of distributed users with low delay, high quality and high robustness. Fueled by advances in networking and compression technologies, p2p multimedia streaming has experienced much initial deployment success for applications such as Internet TV (IPTV), video conferencing, and surveillance. It is the key to address the emerging needs of large-scale digital IPTV, interactive videos, interactive games and other next-generation broadcast-based or personalized multimedia services. A scalable peer-to-peer multimedia system should support many hosts, possibly in excess of hundreds or even millions, with diverse heterogeneity in bandwidth, capability, storage, network, and mobility. It should also be able to support various applications under dynamic user arrival and departure, frequent host failures and unavailability, and unpredictable user behaviors, network traffic and congestion. In a p2p streaming networks, users should be able to share, search, and access contents in a distributed and efficient manner. To achieve these goals, it is particularly important to address the challenges in architecture design, network/transport support, resource discovery and content delivery mechanisms. Scope of Contributions This feature issue is devoted to original surveys and tutorials on these emerging issues in P2P streaming. Authors are invited to submit complete unpublished original articles that are not under review in any other conference or journal. All paper submissions will be treated as full papers but it is important that their length is appropriate for their content. Workshops provide a forum for people to discuss areas of special interest within pervasive computing with like-minded researchers and practitioners. Any change to the workshop organization team must be submitted in writing at least two weeks prior to the position paper deadline for individual workshops (January 12, 2007). In particular, one area of mobile communication networks, the ad hoc networks, has attracted significant attention due to its challenging research problems. The ad hoc networks technology has spun off new research areas, such as mesh-based mobile networks and sensor networks. What characterizes nearly all of those mobile technologies is that during the exchange of information between the source and destination terminals, there exists a set of links which constitutes an end-to-end path over which the information can be exchanged. However, in some application scenarios, the connectivity between the mobile terminals does not always allow for creation of such a path. This could be due to very sparse network conditions (low node density) or due to unstable connectivity conditions (interference, fading, etc). Thus, in such scenarios, it would be often difficult, or even impossible, to form a well-connected mesh network for transmitting data through established end-to-end connections. In fact, even if there temporarily exists a path in the network for some portion of the communication, it is likely that the terminals will only be intermittently connected due to mobility. A simple example is that in a WLAN environment, mobile users may be connected to an AP for a while before moving out of its coverage, and then getting connected to a different AP. More examples are found in environments without access to infrastructure at all. In this workshop we aim to explore novel research issues related to intermittently connected mobile ad hoc networks (ICMAN), which encompasses the scope of delay or disruption tolerant networks (or DTN), and bringing together state-of-the-art contributions in this emerging area. Distributed systems of sensors and actuators, however, pose many challenges and call for systems solutions that are efficient, robust, scalable, and easily deployable. To improve the safety, security and efficiency of the transportation systems and enable new mobile services and applications for the traveling public, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) have been developed, which apply rapidly emerging information technologies in vehicles and transportation infrastructures. The development of inter/intra-vehicle and infrastructure-to-vehicle mobile mesh and ad hoc networks is one of the most challenging and critical issues for the ITS industry, which also sparks numerous interests in the communications and networking research community. The objective of this special section is to disseminate the state-of-the-art R&D results in this fast-moving research area, to facilitate the deployment of vehicular communications networks, and to bring together people from both academia and industry, with the goal of fostering interaction among them to promote further research interests and activities to enable new transportation products and services, e.g., advanced traffic management, vehicle control, safety control, and networking and information services for users on the road. This is clearly evident from various emerging standards such as 3GPP IP Multimedia Subsystem, 3GPP2 Multi-Media Domain, ITU-T Next Generation Network, ETSI TISPAN, Packet Cable Multimedia Architecture and Multi Service Forum. All of these architectures have the following in common: (1) the service plane that transfers service information (e.g., SIP, HTTP) and manages service resources to enable advanced user services (e.g., IPTV, push-to-talk), and (2) the transport plane that delivers end-to-end user packets and manages transport resources. This architectural approach enables the service plane and the transport plane to be developed independently, and provides support for different access technologies based on fixed (twisted copper cable, coaxial cable, fiber) and wireless media. A critical component in these architectures is a logical entity that has a northbound interface to the service plane and southbound interface to the transport plane to provide the linkage between the two planes. This entity has been called by different functional names including policy server, policy decision function (PDF), policy and charging rules function (PCRF), resource and admission control function (RACF) and bandwidth manager. Although the entity also performs functions such as charging control and security control, this Feature Topic will only focus on QoS-related functions such as admission control, QoS mapping from service plane (e.g., SDP) to transport plane (e.g., DSCP marking, policing parameters, etc.), resource monitoring and resource reservation, and gate control. While the standards development organizations have been working on the protocol specifications, much work is needed in the design and performance aspects of this entity in order to provide end-to-end QoS services in a scalable manner. For example, it is of interest to have concrete designs to handle scenarios where end-to-end user packets traverse multiple domains, each of which is managed by its own PDF. Papers that are tutorial in nature are strongly recommended.
