As such, there is significant interest in monitoring aquatic environments for scientific, environmental, commercial, safety, and military reasons. While there is a need for highly precise, real-time, fine grained spatio-temporal sampling of the ocean environment, current methods such as remote telemetry and sequential local sensing cannot satisfy current needs, let alone future needs. The notion of an underwater network is relatively new due to the lack of maturity of underwater acoustic communication. However, networks are necessary in order to achieve the monitoring goals noted above. The physical challenges of acoustic underwater communication require us to completely re-think how a network should be designed and deployed in this environment. Challenges to be overcome by underwater acoustic modem and network designers include: severely limited range-dependent bandwidth and attenuation, extensive time-varying multipath propagation, and low speed of sound propagation in water resulting in long propagation delays. Moreover, a unique feature of underwater networks is that the environment is constantly mobile, naturally causing the node passive mobility. All the above distinct features of underwater networks yield new challenges for every level of the network protocol suite. The goal of the proposed workshop is to bring together researchers and practioners in areas relevant to underwater networks. Thus, many layers of the "stack" from the physical layer to the application layer will be represented. The objective is to serve as a forum for presenting state of the art research, exchanging ideas and experiences, and facilitating interaction and collaboration. The workshop will span one day, including presentations of technical papers, tutorial/survey papers, a panel session and a poster/demo session. Submissions for regular technical papers and poster/demo extended abstracts should describe original research, not published or currently under review for other workshops, conferences, or journals. China's information technology industry and research have been developing at an enormous pace in the last 20 years. Currently China has the largest wireless mobile and the second largest Internet subscriber population in the world. By the end of 2005, the mobile phone users have reached 388 million (19% of the world market), and the number will be over 500 million by 2008 and over 150 million will be multimedia applications. Internet users have exceeded 100 million (half of them are broadband service subscribers). The total sale of optical cables & fibers reached 15 million kilometers in 2004, with the sale of the whole optical communication facility market reaching 1.5 billion USD. Furthermore, business/market factors in this area in China are unique since they are Government driven and mixed with culture, technology, and market forces. CHINACOM is being positioned as the premier international annual conference for the presentation of original and fundamental research advances in the field of Communications, Networks, and Internet Applications. The conference will consist of Technical Symposia, and Workshops. The Technical Symposia will describe significant research in all areas defined below; while the Workshops will focus on development, applications and related business issues. IMS is also driving the notion of Next Generation Networks and Fixed Mobile Convergence by merging the fixed and mobile telecommunication networks with the Internet and the adoption of IP technologies within the telecom domain. >From a technology perspective the IMS represents conceptually a combination of fixed and mobile networks from the telecom domain with emerging VoIP and Internet applications in order to implement a seamless multimedia service environment. The international standardization of IMS was initiated by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) in 2000 and has resulted in first commercial implementations and first trial deployments around the world providing first experiences. The introduction of IMS is challenged today by the questions around business cases, IMS killer applications, migration strategies and interworking issues with existing and upcoming network and service platforms in converging networks. *Topics* In this special issue we would like to provide a snapshot of the state-of-the-art in IMS platform and applications development and deployment around the world. In addition, we want to identify upcoming research areas around IMS and investigate potential solutions in these areas. WMNs do not depend on wired communication infrastructure and their mesh connectivity provides inherent built-in redundancy. This makes them also good candidates for providing an alternative communication mechanism in the face of disasters when normal communication infrastructure is destroyed. WMNs build upon multi-hop forwarding of data packets from access nodes towards gateways to the fixed network and thus share many properties of Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. So far almost all existing research effort related to Mobile Ad Hoc networks has been based mostly on the assumptions that the nodes are highly mobile and are mainly battery operated. Thus, most of the protocols and mechanisms try to conserve energy and cope with frequent topology changes. In WMNs these assumptions can be relaxed which enables the design of new protocols and services for WMNs. Supporting any application over wireless mesh networks is however a challenging task due to the multi-hop forwarding of packets which also limits the scalability of WMNs. Nevertheless, WMNs have promising commercial potential as they are supposed to provide cheap wireless network coverage and access. Towards this aim the traditional approaches to routing and to service provisioning should be reconsidered taking into account the intrinsic characteristics of WMNs and those of new and emerging applications. This could pave the way to the assessment of this technology which is expected to conquer new markets in the next few years by taking advantage of the growth of heterogeneous networks. Authors are invited to submit original full papers not currently under review by other conferences on any aspect of “Wireless mesh: moving towards applications”. Contributions describing theoretical research, protocol design, experiments and measurements, commercial deployments, business models, or position/vision statements are all encouraged. The success of advanced services in mobile environments requires integrative approaches embracing video signal processing and networking technology. The interlinking of these research fields is fostering the development of underlying technology and workflows for mobile video. These technologies, generally hidden to the user, will be pre-requisite to allow for efficient multimedia support of digital communication and leisure time over wireless channels. This special issue will report the results of latest research efforts on video communication in mobile environments. The main goal of this special issue is to collate and disseminate the most relevant achievements of researchers working on video signal processing and communication for mobile applications. High quality contributions addressing related theoretical and practical aspects are solicited. Some of these novel networking protocols and technologies include IEEE 802.11 (infrastructured, mesh, and sensor networks), 802.15, 802.16, UWB, DVB-H, Bluetooth, Mobile IP and its variants. Within this scope, MobiMedia is intended to provide a inique international forum for researchers working in multimedia and mobile networking fields to study new applications, solutions, and standards. Original unpublished contributions are solicited that can improve the knowledge and practice in the integrated design of efficient technologies and the relevant provision of advanced mobile multimedia applications. TECHNICAL PROGRAMS -------------------------------------- The technical program features two key-note speeches: from Roberto Cencioni (Head of Unit INFSO E2, EC) and Albert Gauthier (DG Information Society, EC) on the 7th Work program and the EU IST vision and from Leonardo Chiariglione on future standards on mobile multimedia. Such networks are not well served by standard TCP/IP solutions, due to the prevalence of disconnection, disruption, intermittency, large delays, or other factors. Today, the most successful network architecture is that of the Internet. It has scaled well beyond the original plan of its designers, and the Internet Protocol has been carried on a great number of underlying protocols, including itself. However, the Internet's protocol architecture suffers some problems when implemented on classes of networks for which it was not originally designed. For example, when disconnection and reconnection is common, or link performance is highly variable or extreme, one or more of the traditional Internet protocols do not work well. In this workshop, we wish to explore physical networks that operate significantly differently from wired, connected networks and the protocol architectures and algorithms used to deal with such situations. Techniques for making applications tolerant to disruptions and/or high delays are also in scope. More specifically, we solicit papers in the following areas: - Characterization of performance-challenged networks, e.g. network measurements. - Networking systems operating over unusual/challenged networks. - Protocol design and evaluation of operations over challenged networks. - Robust network application design and implementation techniques. - Delay tolerant and disruption tolerant networks (DTN). - Situated and autonomic communications for challenged networks. - Handling user concerns in challenged networks such as usability, privacy, security and incentives to cooperate. Submissions may include presentations of specific systems or performance measurements, as well as more general, philosophical position papers. Papers that bring out interesting and novel ideas at an early stage in their development are favored over highly polished, journal-style results. Selected papers will be forward-looking, with impact and implications for ongoing or future research. We aim to accept around 15 papers, and to have a highly interactive workshop focusing on broader issues and community development. China's information technology industry and research have been developing at an enormous pace in the last 20 years. Currently China has the largest wireless mobile and the second largest Internet subscriber population in the world. By the end of 2005, the mobile phone users have reached 388 million (19% of the world market), and the number will be over 500 million by 2008 and over 150 million will be multimedia applications. Internet users have exceeded 100 million (half of them are broadband service subscribers). The total sale of optical cables & fibers reached 15 million kilometers in 2004, with the sale of the whole optical communication facility market reaching 1.5 billion USD. Furthermore, business/market factors in this area in China are unique since they are Government driven and mixed with culture, technology, and market forces. CHINACOM is being positioned as the premier international annual conference for the presentation of original and fundamental research advances in the field of Communications, Networks, and Internet Applications.
