Now that some of the fundamental issues and challenges of ad hoc networking have been clearly assessed, the focus is partially shifting to new issues, which include application scenarios (road safety, disaster recovery, sensors and actuators, etc.), autonomous Organization and operation, optimization and control, service creation and support, middleware. The current third generation (3G) wireless systems and the next generation (4G) wireless systems in planning support higher bit rates. However, the high error rates and stringent delay constraints in wireless systems are still significant obstacles for these applications and services. This penetration of computation in all aspects of everyday life and work requires thorough exploration of new kinds of embedded and smart devices and software infrastructures and architectures that support such large-scale scenarios beyond the lab environment. The diversity of systems, devices, services and applications and their distributed nature raises important questions about collaboration between system components. Appropriate solutions often have to take potential resource limitations of connected devices and appliances into account. Contextual awareness, digital representations of physical system components as well as access methods and processing of distributed information are of specific importance - especially as smart devices and objects along with their services are seamlessly integrated in the real world to support users in their daily living activities. ## Scope: This workshop serves as a forum for the exchange of new findings in collaborative technologies and smart appliances deployed in real world environments. We intend to bring together practitioners from academia as well as industry to present their most recent research in these rapidly moving fields. Technical papers on smart appliances and collaborative technologies are solicited for oral presentation at IWSAWC 2006. Papers reporting new developments in computing with smart devices such as PDAs, wearable computers, and cellular phones as well as new insights in instrumentation of everyday artefacts and their infrastructures will be invited for presentation. Ubiquitous services impose new requirements to the entire infrastructure, from the system to the middleware and the applications that should adapt traditional services to different mobile user terminals and profiles, and embed new functions and tools to support the new services and new requirements of the future scenario. The new Internet service infrastructure can only succeed on the basis of a strict synergism between the heterogeneous variety of mobile wireless devices and the fixed network organization that should suite and follow the requirements and constraints imposed by the wireless and mobile counterpart. The specific limitations of mobile wireless devices, such as discontinuity in connections, disconnection, and energy and resource shortages, connected with the new location- and context-sensitivity property, are challenging issues. Only a new methodology to produce a synergic design of an integrated and unified middleware can permit the deployment of all viable and available services that make possible to consider new properties for fruition, mainly connected with the new features of context-awareness. Many different provisioning scenarios are on the way, from the possibility of providing non-strict real-time data streaming adapted to very different wireless devices, by taking advantage of caching and multicast wherever possible, to a possibility of creating dynamic and impromptu communities based on common current locality and on presently available heterogeneous devices, by taking into account different resources and energy consumption limitations After the encouraging answer to the first edition, this second workshop intends to offer a renovated opportunity of putting together different experiences by providing a forum for researchers and engineers in academia and industry to compare and exchange new ideas, research results, experiences, and products about different aspects related to Ubiquitous and Mobile Internet. Centralized approaches of introducing new services and architectures consistently failed to materialize at large scale. However, these applications are always stringently constrained by current wireless system architectures because the request of high data rate for video transmission. To better serve this need, 4G broadband mobile systems are in planning and are expected to increase the mobile data transmission rates and bring higher spectral efficiency, lower cost per transmitted bit, and increased flexibility of mobile terminals and networks. The new technology strives to eliminate the distinction between video over wireless and video over wireline networks. In the meantime, great opportunities are provided for proposing novel wireless video protocols and applications, and developing advanced video coding and communications systems and algorithms for the next-generation video applications that can take maximum advantage of the 4G wireless systems.
