Having the individual components of a parallel application depended upon uncoordinated efforts of commodity operating system schedulers can reduce the performance of a parallel machine significantly. Furthermore, the performance can be reduced to the point that scalability is impaired. The goal of the workshop is to better understand the impact that operating system interference has on multithreading, increased scalability and other new technologies. In this workshop, we seek to bring together diverse participants who are managing this problem through hardware, scheduling, operating systems and compilers. We encourage active participation from processor architects, system architects, operating systems designers, virtual machine architects, compiler writers, performance analysts, and developers. The design of data communication techniques in multi-hop ad hoc networks has challenges at all layers of communication. This workshop concentrates on the network layer problems like data communication (routing, QoS-routing, geocasting, multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and topology control (neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor elimination, etc.). Additionally, sensor networks are currently recognized as one of the priority research areas by NSF. The area of sensor networking is gaining momentum within the researh community. This workshop will address ongoing research on this field, including problems such as: physical properties, sensor training, security through intelligent node cooperation, medium access, sensor area coverage with random and deterministic placement, object location, sensor position determination, energy efficient broadcasting and activity scheduling, routing, connectivity, data dissemination and gathering, sensor centric quality of routing, temporal message ordering, path exposure, tree reconfiguration, topology construction, and transport layer. The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global information. Localized algorithms are distributed algorithms where simple local node behaviour achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an arbitrary number of nodes, which is the main goal of this plan. Sensor and rooftop/mesh networks, for instance, have hundreds or thousands of nodes. The main objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research results on data communication and topology control in rapidly growing area of ad hoc and sensor networks, with emphasizes on localized techniques. A wide range of medical applications can be supported by technological advancements in wireless communication systems in conjunction with biosensors. These systems often operate in harsh outdoor environments, especially when accidents are often caused by heavy rainfall, where the wireless communication link can be severely affected by various conditions. Under any situation, they must operate reliably at all times in order to support mission-critical services. Such diverse range of services can only be reliably supported by having the appropriate quality assurance methodology and information security in place. A WSN consists of a large number of small sensor nodes with sensing, data processing, and communication capabilities, which are deployed in a region of interest and collaborate to accomplish a common task, such as environmental monitoring, military surveillance, and industry process control. Distinguished from traditional wireless networks, WSNs are characterized of dense node deployment, unreliable sensor node, frequent topology change, and severe power, computation, and memory constraints. These unique characteristics and constraints present many new challenges to the design and implementation of WSNs, such as energy conservation, self-organization, efficient data dissemination, and fault tolerance. For example, energy efficiency is the key to prolonging the network lifetime and is thus of primary importance in WSNs. It must be considered not only at the physical layer but also at the link layer and the network layer in sensor network design. Although many networking protocols and algorithms have been developed for traditional wireless ad hoc networks, they cannot effectively address the unique characteristics and constraints and application requirements of sensor networks. To meet the new challenges, innovative protocols and algorithms are needed to achieve energy efficiency, flexible scalability and adaptability, and good network performance. For example, it is highly desirable to develop new energy-efficient protocols for topology discovery, self-organization, medium access control, route discovery, and data dissemination. An efficient query processing and data aggregation algorithm can significantly reduce the number of transmissions of sensor nodes and thus provide substantial energy savings and prolong the lifetime of the network. In addition, open standards are important and imperative to facilitate and improve the development of WSNs. To realize the vision of WSNs, a large amount of research and development activities are going on in recent years. The purpose of this special issue is to expose the readership of IEEE Network to the latest research and development progress in this hot and exciting area. Scope of Contributions This special issue aims to publish a collection of research and survey articles that focus on the latest research and development results in all networking aspects of WSNs. Original research and survey articles are solicited from all researchers and practitioners. Articles should be tutorial in nature and should be written in a style comprehensible to the readers outside the specialty of the article. Insbesondere entstehen, getrieben durch immer kleinere und mobilere Endgeräte, neue Anwendungsszenarien mit hohen Anforderungen an Verfügbarkeit, Langlebigkeit, Adaptivität und Selbstorganisation. Forschungsgebiete ----------------- Betriebssysteme: Einzig das Betriebssystem kennt alle strukturellen Eigenschaften der darunter liegenden Hardware wie auch der laufenden Anwendungen, die implizit durch die Aktivierung von Hardwarekomponenten Energie verbrauchen. Wegen dieser Vermittlerrolle konzentriert sich die Forschung auf Betriebssystemstrategien, die durch Wissen über die Gesamtheit der internen Abläufe den Energieverbrauch wirksam beeinflussen können. Das Betriebssystem kann dabei die Hardwarekomponenten in den jeweils für das Gesamtsystem optimalen Betriebsmodus versetzen und die Verweildauer in den jeweiligen Betriebsmodi durch eine energiebewußte Aktivitätensteuerung beeinflussen. Ein Betriebsmodus mit reduzierter Energieaufnahme impliziert dabei in der Regel eine reduzierte Geschwindigkeit bzw. eine höhere Zugriffsverzögerung. Rechnernetze: Mobile Netze zeichnen sich durch die Nutzung von Radiowellen als Übertragungskanal aus. Funkübertragung ist bei hohen Datenraten und/oder großen Reichweiten sehr teuer in Bezug auf die benötigt Energie für die Transmission. Basierend auf der eingesetzten Technologie für die Übertragung und den genutzten Protokollen, kann die Anzahl der Sende- und Empfangszeit minimiert werden. Dies stellt einen wesentlichen Beitrag zu energiebewußter Kommunikation dar. Kommunikationsprotokolle: Aufbauend auf den eingesetzten Übertragungstechniken, lassen sich die Protokolle der Datenkommunikation für energiebewußte Funktion anpassen. Sogenanntes Cross-Layer-Design hilft, Verzerrungs- und Störeffekte zwischen den Protokollen der Sicherungs-, Netzwerk- und Transportschicht zu vermeiden bzw. zu minimieren. Neue Kommunikationsparadigmen helfen in hochmobilen Netzen den Kommunikationsaufwand für Statusverwaltung und Selbstorganisation der Netze zu vermeiden. Middleware: Mit der zunehmenden Vernetzung mobiler und eingebetteter Systeme ist das energiebewußte Arbeiten von Basisfunktionalität sogenannter Middleware-Dienste, wie Kommunikation und Vermittlung, unabdingbar. Insbesondere kann auf dieser Schicht nicht isoliert gearbeitet werden, sondern es sind schichtenübergreifende Umsetzungen der Anwendungsanforderungen auf Middleware-Funktionalität, den Mechanismen des zugrunde liegenden Betriebssystems und den Kommunikationsdiensten zu entwickeln. Querschnittsthema aller Forschungsgebiete ist das energiebewußte Arbeiten. However, there are several overlaps between these two research areas. The aim of the workshop is to study commonalities and particularities in the design of Computer Games and CSCW systems in their structure and as a learning environment. Nowadays Computer Games are not only used for entertainment purposes but become a serious issue in research and business. Games have long provided a structured environment for quickly learning complex collaborative or cooperative behaviours through play. Computer Games find application in today's working environments as so called 'Serious Games' for training and simulation purposes, and share as a collaborative activity several features and requirements with collaborative working environments. Games may combine successfully traditional aspects of gaming with the anytime, anywhere approach of modern information technology as in pervasive games. The aim of the workshop is to create a mutual understanding of how CSCW systems and Computer Games can benefit from each other in technology-mediated settings such as computer or video games, augmented reality, virtual reality, cross-media, mobile devices, live action role plays, or massively multi-player online role playing games (MMORPG). We are interested in examining structures which both research areas, Computer Games and CSCW systems have in common, and which can be shared in future applications. Join us for a single-day workshop on Computer Games and CSCW and contribute with your position paper. A panel discussion will study in general how CSCW Systems and Computer Games can benefit from each other. It will cover new uses for games, ways of incorporating new methods into traditional CSCW usability testing, and ways of pursuing new goals such as peer or collaborative learning with games. Breakout groups will elaborate on panel topics, and also devise next steps for this interest community. NetGames 2005 Workshop CALL FOR PAPERS http://www.research.ibm.com/netgames2005 The NetGames workshop brings together researchers and developers from academia and industry to share ideas and present new research in understanding networked games and in enabling the next generation of online games. This year's workshop will be hosted by IBM Research in Hawthorne, NY. Submissions are sought in any area related to networked games. NetGames 2005 welcomes papers and extended abstracts describing research related to networked games on all platforms. Much of the existing research in wireless networking assumes a communication between one sender and one or multiple receiver(s). For reasons of self-interest, users may however allow terminals to engage in cooperative behavior, resulting in improved overall network performance. For cooperation, terminals will connect to each other using a short range communication link and simultaneously being connected to the centralized access point. This configuration allows many forms of cooperation. For this special issue, we distinguish between altruism and cooperation by requiring that cooperation benefit each entity involved. From this perspective, pure relaying is an example of altruism and not cooperation. Cooperation is not limited to a single ISO/OSI protocol layer, but can be addressed across multiple protocol layers. If network mobility is not explicitly supported by some mechanisms, existing sessions break and connectivity to the global Internet is lost. A mobile network is composed of Mobile Router(s) (MR) and Mobile Network Nodes (MNN) that can be fixed or mobile. There has been rapid development in network mobility support, i.e., providing Internet connectivity to the networks that move using mobile routers since the inception of Mobile IPv4 in 1996. Seamless Internet access in public transportation such as in trains and busses can be possible if mobile routers are used. Cars with low-power sensors seamlessly connected to the Internet constitute yet another example of networks which move. To date, some airline companies announced Internet connectivity support during commercial flights and this trend is expected to accelerate and cover most if not all flights. This issue is focused on modeling, analysis, and simulation of network mobility support protocols. We solicit papers presenting original and unpublished work including, but not limited to the following topics: * Modeling and Analysis of Network Mobility o Modeling, analysis and simulation of mobile router o Protocols for route optimization o Mobility issues inside a mobile network o Mobile IPv6 extensions for route optimization o Nested mobile networks o Multihomed mobile networks o Operational issues to deploy mobile networks o Auto-configuration for mobile networks o Mobile router support on cellular phone platforms * Services in the Networks that Move o Service advertisement and discovery protocols in networks that move o Specifications nad models of services for network mobility o Encryption and authentication in service access for network mobility * Security Issues in Network Mobility o Security analysis of present network mobility support protocols o Applications of AAA and EAP to network mobility o Interaction with security-enhanced modules in other layers (vertically) or other middle boxes (horizontally) Prospective authors should follow the IEEE J-SAC manuscript format described in the Information for Authors. The technology to support this endeavor has progressed from diaries and painting, through pocket cameras, to the current era where capture is digital, and sound and image recording can be supplemented with such data as temperature, heart rate, location, Web pages visited, compute/device usage logs, and so on. A large proportion of multimedia research has focused on the representation, archival and transmission of media related to isolated events--single or group images of a party, a video of a graduation ceremony, and so on. This special issue is dedicated to an emerging area of research that deals with the continuous archival and retrieval of all media relating to personal experiences. The continuous archival paradigm fundamentally alters our relationship to biological memory, since analysis of such media powerfully augments human memory. Personal storage of a person's entire media throughout a lifetime has been desired and discussed since at least 1945, when Vannevar Bush published /As We May Think/, positing the "Memex" device "in which an individual stores all his books, records, and communications, and which is mechanized so that it may be consulted with exceeding speed and flexibility." His vision was astonishingly broad for the time, including full-text search, annotations, hyperlinks, virtually unlimited storage, and even stereo cameras mounted on eyeglasses. In 2004, storage, sensor, and computing technology have progressed to the point of making Memex feasible and even affordable. Indeed, we can now look beyond Memex at new possibilities. Interest in this topic has been demonstrated by the success of two recent workshops: CARPE (at ACM Multimedia 04) and "Memory and Sharing of Experiences" (at Pervasive 04). Also, there is interest in funding such research, as evidenced by the DARPA Assist program and the UK Memories for Life grand challenge proposal. **Potential topics** This special issue encourages submissions on topics relevant to CARPE, including: * Capture/sensors (including scanning, wearable, embedded, different kinds of sensors, and robotic assistance) and experiential sampling * Data storage, management, organization, and retrieval * Insight (content analysis and data mining) * User interface issues, including visualization, authoring, story-telling, and annotation * Applications, such as personal museum, health-support, childcare, research tools, and meeting capture. * Security, privacy, and legal issues Articles should be no more than eight magazine pages, where a page is 750 words and a quarter-page image counts as 200 words.
