Neben klassischen Spieltypen wie Shooter Games und Verfolgungsjagden entsteht eine Vielzahl neuer Spielformen. Diese neuen digitalen Spiele sind vielfach kooperativ, multimodal und haben ihren Handlungsort in einer virtuellen Umgebung. Die Spieler können sich an unterschiedlichen Orten befinden, jedoch auf eine gemeinsame virtuelle Spielplattform zugreifen und so miteinander kooperieren. Anwendung finden solche Spiele nicht nur im Unterhaltungsbereich, wie z.B. in der Form von Rollenspielen, sondern auch im Arbeitsbereich in der Simulation von komplexen Arbeits- und Produktionsprozessen. Diese neue Generation von digitalen Spielen stellt eine neue Herausforderung dar für das Design von spielgeeigneten Mensch-Computer Schnittstellen, der Nutzung mobiler Endgeräte, sowie der Gestaltung von kooperationsunterstützender Software. In diesem Workshop wollen wir uns speziell mit der Frage befassen, inwiefern Strukturen aus dem Bereich kooperative Arbeitsumgebungen übertragbar sind auf eine Anwendung im Bereich der digitalen Spiele. Fragen hierzu sind z.B.: Welche Bedeutung haben Kooperation und Communities für den Erfolg eines digitalen Spiels? Welche Funktionalitäten und Ansätze können von kooperative Arbeitsumgebungen übernommen werden? Welche Spieltypen würden davon besonders profitieren? Ebenso ist die Umkehrung der Frage von Interesse: Wie lassen sich die Erfahrungen in der Gestaltung und Entwicklung von Spielen auf das Design von kooperativen Arbeitsumgebungen übertragen? Viele digitale Spiele haben einen sehr immersiven Charakter. Durch welche Spielstrukturen wird dieser Effekt hervorgerufen? Kann man diese Strukturen auf kooperative Arbeitsumgebungen übertragen und dort einen ähnlichen Effekt erzielen? Welche Art von kooperative Arbeitsumgebungen würde davon profitieren? Ziel des Workshops ------------------ Das Ziel des halbtägigen Workshops ist es, für kooperative Spiele und kollaborative Arbeitsumgebungen: * existierende Strukturen und Erfolgsfaktoren digitaler Spiele und kooperativer Anwendungen zu untersuchen und diese auf ihre gegenseitige Anwendbarkeit zu überprüfen, * Szenarien zu entwickeln für zukünftige Anwendungen, * Forschungsziele zu definieren und diese thematisch und zeitlich zu gliedern. Zielgruppe ---------- Der Workshop richtet sich an Teilnehmer mit einem Hintergrund beispielsweise in der Entwicklung von Mensch-Computer Schnittstellen, CSCW, VR, Mixed Reality, Design, Usability und der Computerspiel-Entwicklung. Die Teilnehmer sollten diskussionsfreudig sein und bereit aktiv mitzuarbeiten. Gestaltung & Ergebnis des Workshops ------------------------ Der halbtägige Workshop wird schwerpunktmäßig in Form von Diskussionsrunden zur gemeinsamen Erarbeitung der vorangehend angeführten Ziele stattfinden. Die Beiträge der Teilnehmer und die Ergebnisse des Workshops werden auf der Workshop Website veröffentlicht. Anforderungen ------------- Die Teilnehmerzahl des Workshops ist beschränkt auf 20 Teilnehmer. Voraussetzung für die Teilnahme ist die Einreichung und Annahme eines Positionspapiers von einer halben bis einer Seite Länge, um den Workshop entsprechend des Profils der Teilnehmer gestalten zu können. Einreichungen per email an die Autorinnen sind möglich bis zum 15.August 2005. Das Positionspapier kann eine kurze Ideenskizze sein, ein aktuelles spiel-relevantes Projekt des Teilnehmers beschreiben oder auch nur das Interesse des Teilnehmers an einer Fragestellung formulieren. Although, the above challenges form a set of potential themes for the workshop, this list is by no means exhaustive. Consequently, the workshop seeks papers on the areas, but not limited to, listed below: . Sensor networks: applications, infrastructure, middleware support and emerging standards (OMG DDS, IEEE/NIST 1451.x, OSGi WireAdmin, JSR256 & 257 .); . Calculi for sensor data, and middleware support for their processing and distribution; . Sensor data mining; . Component-based and service-oriented architectures, and design patterns for sensor based services; . Theoretical foundations and middleware support for context based adaptation for mobile pervasive systems, and sensor-based services; . New notations for specifying context-sensitive systems; . Ad-hoc communities: applications, infrastructure and middleware support; . Roles and responsibilities in ad-hoc communities; . Group management and communication support for ad-hoc communities; . Ad-hoc network communications, quality of service, management and middleware support; . Service-connection middleware and architectures; . Support for zero configuration; . Middleware for self-assembly, self-configuration, self-distribution and autonomic computing in general; . Data management infrastructures for ad hoc and pervasive systems; . Submission ---------- The workshop format will be focused around submission of position papers of no more than 8 pages. Please submit your papers in PS or PDF using the ACM proceeding format (see http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html) to the web site http://www-adele.imag.fr/mpac05/ocs. Papers are solicited that present a view of the state of the art in a particular sub-problem area, identify specific middleware challenges, and suggest potential avenues for exploration by proposing models, abstractions and infrastructure components addressing these challenges. Approximately two thirds of the workshop will be devoted to the presentation and discussion of these papers, while the remaining third of the time will be devoted to the development of the research roadmap. Papers will be reviewed by at least 2 members of the programme committee. The review process will be based upon identifying the relevance and potential of the position statement to contribute to the elaboration of the roadmap and to stimulate discussion. All accepted papers will appear in the ACM Digital Library as well as in a hard-copy companion proceedings issued to the workshop participants. The objective is to advance the state of the modeling and analysis in telecommunications by stimulating research activity on new and important problems. The conference will be divided into segments with each segment devoted to a specific topic. This will allow for little conflict between segments. The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global information. Localized algorithms are distributed algorithms where simple local node behaviour achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an arbitrary number of nodes, which is the main goal of this plan. Sensor and rooftop/mesh networks, for instance, have hundreds or thousands of nodes. The main objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research results on data communication and topology control in rapidly growing area of ad hoc and sensor networks, with emphasizes on localized techniques. In many cases, as well as in aerospace applications, the wireless choice is a must. In other cases, wireless means resource optimization, as in the case of Wireless LANs. Cable networks and the Internet are not sufficient to support applications in some environments. People may require news on the web in hazardous environments. Moreover, in the presence of infrastructure, traffic bottlenecks of terrestrial networks and traditional links could make the service highly inefficient, if not useful. Therefore, there is increasing commercial interest to use wireless in modern telecommunications systems such as local area services, interactivity and possibility of building networks adapted to the different needs; tele-learning; managing activity of the Public Administration; bank and financial services; industrial activity located remotely; broadcasting and backbone access; international connections; tele-medicine; data recovery; video-surveillance; application in rural environments; applications for vehicles, trains and planes; and tactical communications, among others. Offering real services with a specific guarantee of Quality of Service (QoS) over wireless systems (including WLAN, radio and satellite) is very challenging as it implies the need to solve challenging research and development issues due to the peculiarity of the application environment. A WSN consists of a large number of small sensor nodes with sensing, data processing, and communication capabilities, which are deployed in a region of interest and collaborate to accomplish a common task, such as environmental monitoring, military surveillance, and industry process control. Distinguished from traditional wireless networks, WSNs are characterized of dense node deployment, unreliable sensor node, frequent topology change, and severe power, computation, and memory constraints. These unique characteristics and constraints present many new challenges to the design and implementation of WSNs, such as energy conservation, self-organization, efficient data dissemination, and fault tolerance. For example, energy efficiency is the key to prolonging the network lifetime and is thus of primary importance in WSNs. It must be considered not only at the physical layer but also at the link layer and the network layer in sensor network design. Although many networking protocols and algorithms have been developed for traditional wireless ad hoc networks, they cannot effectively address the unique characteristics and constraints and application requirements of sensor networks. To meet the new challenges, innovative protocols and algorithms are needed to achieve energy efficiency, flexible scalability and adaptability, and good network performance. For example, it is highly desirable to develop new energy-efficient protocols for topology discovery, self-organization, medium access control, route discovery, and data dissemination. An efficient query processing and data aggregation algorithm can significantly reduce the number of transmissions of sensor nodes and thus provide substantial energy savings and prolong the lifetime of the network. In addition, open standards are important and imperative to facilitate and improve the development of WSNs. To realize the vision of WSNs, a large amount of research and development activities are going on in recent years. The purpose of this special issue is to expose the readership of IEEE Network to the latest research and development progress in this hot and exciting area. Scope of Contributions This special issue aims to publish a collection of research and survey articles that focus on the latest research and development results in all networking aspects of WSNs. Original research and survey articles are solicited from all researchers and practitioners. Articles should be tutorial in nature and should be written in a style comprehensible to the readers outside the specialty of the article. Somit stellt dieses Arbeitsgebiet einen wichtigen Bereich der aktuellen Forschung im Bereich Systemsoftware (Betriebs- und Kommunikationssysteme) dar. Insbesondere entstehen, getrieben durch immer kleinere und mobilere Endgeräte, neue Anwendungsszenarien mit hohen Anforderungen an Verfügbarkeit, Langlebigkeit, Adaptivität und Selbstorganisation. Forschungsgebiete ----------------- Betriebssysteme: Einzig das Betriebssystem kennt alle strukturellen Eigenschaften der darunter liegenden Hardware wie auch der laufenden Anwendungen, die implizit durch die Aktivierung von Hardwarekomponenten Energie verbrauchen. Wegen dieser Vermittlerrolle konzentriert sich die Forschung auf Betriebssystemstrategien, die durch Wissen über die Gesamtheit der internen Abläufe den Energieverbrauch wirksam beeinflussen können. Das Betriebssystem kann dabei die Hardwarekomponenten in den jeweils für das Gesamtsystem optimalen Betriebsmodus versetzen und die Verweildauer in den jeweiligen Betriebsmodi durch eine energiebewußte Aktivitätensteuerung beeinflussen. Ein Betriebsmodus mit reduzierter Energieaufnahme impliziert dabei in der Regel eine reduzierte Geschwindigkeit bzw. eine höhere Zugriffsverzögerung. Rechnernetze: Mobile Netze zeichnen sich durch die Nutzung von Radiowellen als Übertragungskanal aus. Funkübertragung ist bei hohen Datenraten und/oder großen Reichweiten sehr teuer in Bezug auf die benötigt Energie für die Transmission. Basierend auf der eingesetzten Technologie für die Übertragung und den genutzten Protokollen, kann die Anzahl der Sende- und Empfangszeit minimiert werden. Dies stellt einen wesentlichen Beitrag zu energiebewußter Kommunikation dar. Kommunikationsprotokolle: Aufbauend auf den eingesetzten Übertragungstechniken, lassen sich die Protokolle der Datenkommunikation für energiebewußte Funktion anpassen. Sogenanntes Cross-Layer-Design hilft, Verzerrungs- und Störeffekte zwischen den Protokollen der Sicherungs-, Netzwerk- und Transportschicht zu vermeiden bzw. zu minimieren. Neue Kommunikationsparadigmen helfen in hochmobilen Netzen den Kommunikationsaufwand für Statusverwaltung und Selbstorganisation der Netze zu vermeiden. Middleware: Mit der zunehmenden Vernetzung mobiler und eingebetteter Systeme ist das energiebewußte Arbeiten von Basisfunktionalität sogenannter Middleware-Dienste, wie Kommunikation und Vermittlung, unabdingbar. Insbesondere kann auf dieser Schicht nicht isoliert gearbeitet werden, sondern es sind schichtenübergreifende Umsetzungen der Anwendungsanforderungen auf Middleware-Funktionalität, den Mechanismen des zugrunde liegenden Betriebssystems und den Kommunikationsdiensten zu entwickeln. Querschnittsthema aller Forschungsgebiete ist das energiebewußte Arbeiten.
