The theme of this year’s workshop is “Ubiquitous Society and Entertainment.” As more and more computers have been introduced into our life and our society, our society is rapidly changing into a ubiquitous society. What kind of technologies will play important roles in the ubiquitous home and/or society? What kind of new entertainment will emerge? What will our life style be like in the ubiquitous society? What will be the relationship between entertainment, society, and culture? It is important for even researchers/engineers to consider and to discuss these issues. The main topic of the workshop is technologies for the ubiquitous home/society as well as entertainment. At the same time it is strongly encouraged to submit interdisciplinary papers focusing on the psychological and sociological aspect of ubiquitous home/society as well as entertainment. Anwendung finden solche Spiele nicht nur im Unterhaltungsbereich, wie z.B. in der Form von Rollenspielen, sondern auch im Arbeitsbereich in der Simulation von komplexen Arbeits- und Produktionsprozessen. Diese neue Generation von digitalen Spielen stellt eine neue Herausforderung dar für das Design von spielgeeigneten Mensch-Computer Schnittstellen, der Nutzung mobiler Endgeräte, sowie der Gestaltung von kooperationsunterstützender Software. In diesem Workshop wollen wir uns speziell mit der Frage befassen, inwiefern Strukturen aus dem Bereich kooperative Arbeitsumgebungen übertragbar sind auf eine Anwendung im Bereich der digitalen Spiele. Fragen hierzu sind z.B.: Welche Bedeutung haben Kooperation und Communities für den Erfolg eines digitalen Spiels? Welche Funktionalitäten und Ansätze können von kooperative Arbeitsumgebungen übernommen werden? Welche Spieltypen würden davon besonders profitieren? Ebenso ist die Umkehrung der Frage von Interesse: Wie lassen sich die Erfahrungen in der Gestaltung und Entwicklung von Spielen auf das Design von kooperativen Arbeitsumgebungen übertragen? Viele digitale Spiele haben einen sehr immersiven Charakter. Durch welche Spielstrukturen wird dieser Effekt hervorgerufen? Sensor networks: applications, infrastructure, middleware support and emerging standards (OMG DDS, IEEE/NIST 1451.x, OSGi WireAdmin, JSR256 & 257 .); . Calculi for sensor data, and middleware support for their processing and distribution; . Sensor data mining; . Component-based and service-oriented architectures, and design patterns for sensor based services; . Theoretical foundations and middleware support for context based adaptation for mobile pervasive systems, and sensor-based services; . New notations for specifying context-sensitive systems; . Ad-hoc communities: applications, infrastructure and middleware support; . Roles and responsibilities in ad-hoc communities; . Group management and communication support for ad-hoc communities; . Ad-hoc network communications, quality of service, management and middleware support; . Service-connection middleware and architectures; . Support for zero configuration; . Submission ---------- The workshop format will be focused around submission of position papers of no more than 8 pages. Papers are solicited that present a view of the state of the art in a particular sub-problem area, identify specific middleware challenges, and suggest potential avenues for exploration by proposing models, abstractions and infrastructure components addressing these challenges. Approximately two thirds of the workshop will be devoted to the presentation and discussion of these papers, while the remaining third of the time will be devoted to the development of the research roadmap. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate a global heterogeneous architecture and services that together provide seamless integration of single-hop networks (e.g., cellular, WLAN, WWAN) and multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks. The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the latest research and future research directions in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks. We are seeking original and previously unpublished research papers addressing theoretical and application issues in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless mobile networks. The proliferation and deployment of radio access networks such as Wireless WANs, Wireless LANs, and Wireless PANs with distinguishing characteristics of data rate, coverage range, power, mobility, and prices will clearly lead to a need for seamless and ubiquitous access across these various networks. Such an integrated heterogeneous environment enables a user to access a particular network depending upon the application needs and the types of radio access networks (RANs) available (e.g., cellular network, ad hoc, WLAN, WPAN etc). The heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks, on the other hand, provide unlimited mobility and greater flexibility but introduce a number of challenges due to dynamic network topology. The design of efficient and scalable protocols for existing multi-hop wireless and mobile networks such as wireless and mobile ad hoc networks continue to pose challenges at all the layers of networking stack. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate a global heterogeneous architecture and services that together provide seamless integration of single-hop networks (e.g., cellular, WLAN, WWAN) and multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks. The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the latest research and future research directions in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks. We are seeking original and previously unpublished research papers addressing theoretical and application issues in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless mobile networks. The design of data communication techniques in multi-hop ad hoc networks has challenges at all layers of communication. This workshop concentrates on the network layer problems like data communication (routing, QoS-routing, geocasting, multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and topology control (neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor elimination, etc.). Additionally, sensor networks are currently recognized as one of the priority research areas by NSF. The area of sensor networking is gaining momentum within the researh community. This workshop will address ongoing research on this field, including problems such as: physical properties, sensor training, security through intelligent node cooperation, medium access, sensor area coverage with random and deterministic placement, object location, sensor position determination, energy efficient broadcasting and activity scheduling, routing, connectivity, data dissemination and gathering, sensor centric quality of routing, temporal message ordering, path exposure, tree reconfiguration, topology construction, and transport layer. The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global information. Localized algorithms are distributed algorithms where simple local node behaviour achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an arbitrary number of nodes, which is the main goal of this plan. Sensor and rooftop/mesh networks, for instance, have hundreds or thousands of nodes. The main objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research results on data communication and topology control in rapidly growing area of ad hoc and sensor networks, with emphasizes on localized techniques. Thanks. --Nirwan Wireless Technology Advances and Challenges for Telemedicine Background Telemedicine employs telecommunications to provide medical information and services via secured communication channels. Telemedicine systems can utilize well established and developing wireless technologies and standards such as various Wi-Fi based networks for the reliable delivery of medical information and provision of life-saving services. A wide range of medical applications can be supported by technological advancements in wireless communication systems in conjunction with biosensors. These systems often operate in harsh outdoor environments, especially when accidents are often caused by heavy rainfall, where the wireless communication link can be severely affected by various conditions. Under any situation, they must operate reliably at all times in order to support mission-critical services. Such diverse range of services can only be reliably supported by having the appropriate quality assurance methodology and information security in place. As a result, advancements in wireless networking technology provide a vital link to enhancing telemedicine services. Cable networks and the Internet are not sufficient to support applications in some environments. People may require news on the web in hazardous environments. Moreover, in the presence of infrastructure, traffic bottlenecks of terrestrial networks and traditional links could make the service highly inefficient, if not useful. Therefore, there is increasing commercial interest to use wireless in modern telecommunications systems such as local area services, interactivity and possibility of building networks adapted to the different needs; tele-learning; managing activity of the Public Administration; bank and financial services; industrial activity located remotely; broadcasting and backbone access; international connections; tele-medicine; data recovery; video-surveillance; application in rural environments; applications for vehicles, trains and planes; and tactical communications, among others. A WSN consists of a large number of small sensor nodes with sensing, data processing, and communication capabilities, which are deployed in a region of interest and collaborate to accomplish a common task, such as environmental monitoring, military surveillance, and industry process control. Distinguished from traditional wireless networks, WSNs are characterized of dense node deployment, unreliable sensor node, frequent topology change, and severe power, computation, and memory constraints. These unique characteristics and constraints present many new challenges to the design and implementation of WSNs, such as energy conservation, self-organization, efficient data dissemination, and fault tolerance. For example, energy efficiency is the key to prolonging the network lifetime and is thus of primary importance in WSNs. It must be considered not only at the physical layer but also at the link layer and the network layer in sensor network design. Although many networking protocols and algorithms have been developed for traditional wireless ad hoc networks, they cannot effectively address the unique characteristics and constraints and application requirements of sensor networks. To meet the new challenges, innovative protocols and algorithms are needed to achieve energy efficiency, flexible scalability and adaptability, and good network performance. For example, it is highly desirable to develop new energy-efficient protocols for topology discovery, self-organization, medium access control, route discovery, and data dissemination. An efficient query processing and data aggregation algorithm can significantly reduce the number of transmissions of sensor nodes and thus provide substantial energy savings and prolong the lifetime of the network. In addition, open standards are important and imperative to facilitate and improve the development of WSNs. To realize the vision of WSNs, a large amount of research and development activities are going on in recent years. The purpose of this special issue is to expose the readership of IEEE Network to the latest research and development progress in this hot and exciting area. Scope of Contributions This special issue aims to publish a collection of research and survey articles that focus on the latest research and development results in all networking aspects of WSNs. Original research and survey articles are solicited from all researchers and practitioners. Articles should be tutorial in nature and should be written in a style comprehensible to the readers outside the specialty of the article.
