Wireless ad hoc networking covers multi-hop scenarios (network nodes communicating via other network nodes) such as conference, hospital, battlefield, rescue, and monitoring scenarios. Wireless ad-hoc networks are formed by a set of hosts that communicate with each other over a wireless channel. Each node has the ability to communicate directly with another node in its physical neighborhood. They operate in a self-organized and decentralized manner and message communication takes place via multi-hop spreading. A packet is sent to its target node through a set of intermediate nodes that act as routers. Particular ad hoc network systems include packet radio networks, sensor networks, personal communication systems, rooftop networks, and wireless local area networks. This workshop covers the area of ad hoc networking, from physical issues up to applications aspects. In particular, it will cover physical, data link, network and transport layers, as well as applications, security, simulation and power management issues in sensor, local area, personal, and mobile ad hoc networks. It is the goal of this workshop to review ad hoc protocols and models and to reflect the latest in the state of the art in ad hoc networks. It seeks to provide up to date information on research and development activities in the rapidly growing area of ad hoc networks. The first edition of WWAN held last year during ICDCS-2004 (Tokyo, Japan) was organized by David Simplot-Ryl and Ivan Stojmenovic. In response to the Call for Papers, 42 papers from 20 different countries had been submitted. Based on three review reports per paper, they was classified as accept, reject or discuss. For those papers in the discuss list, additional opinions were sought. As a result, a total of 21 papers were selected for presentation at WWAN 2004 and were organized in 7 sessions. The wireless networking scene is dominated by two distinct networking platforms: (a) cellular networks, which passed through multiple generations -1G, 2G and 3G, and (b) Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) championed by the IEEE 802.11 networks. Recent trends indicate that 3G networks and WLANs will co-exist to offer public wireless broadband services to end users. The two platforms offer characteristics that complement each other perfectly. The 3G cellular systems such as Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) and Code Division Multiple Access (cdma2000) will support real-time and non-real-time multimedia services with data rates from 144 kb/s to 2 Mb/s with wide coverage and nearly universal roaming. However, the costs of acquiring the necessary radio spectrum and the required network equipment upgrades are very high. This is in contrast to WLAN systems such as IEEE 802.11 a/b/g, which provide affordable services and bit rates surpassing those of 3G systems, up to 11 Mb/s with 802.11b and 54 Mb/s with 802.11a/g. However, the coverage offered by WLANs is quit limited and lacks roaming support. The complementary characteristics of 3G cellular systems (slow, wide coverage) and WLAN (fast, limited coverage) make it attractive to integrate these two technologies to provide ubiquitous wireless access. The purpose of integrating 3G systems and WLANs is to make it possible to use the best parts of both systems. High bandwidth WLANs are used for data transfer where available and 3G systems can be used where WLAN coverage is lacking. Development and standardization efforts are currently underway for defining suitable architectures for 3G/WLAN integration. However, designing a network architecture that efficiently integrates 3G systems and WLAN is a challenge task that needs a lot of research efforts. In this special issue, we intend to publish a collection of high quality papers by world leading researchers that present state-of-the-art research in the area of 3G/WLAN integration. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: 1. Mobility management 2. Seamless vertical handoff techniques between 3G and WLAN 3. Location management techniques 4. The new Internet service infrastructure can only succeed on the basis of a strict synergism between the heterogeneous variety of mobile wireless devices and the fixed network organization that should suite and follow the requirements and constraints imposed by the wireless and mobile counterpart. The specific limitations of mobile wireless devices, such as discontinuity in connections, disconnection, and energy and resource shortages, connected with the new location- and context-sensitivity property, are challenging issues that call for a re-examination on the design of the middleware of both the fixed and the mobile counterpart. Only a new methodology to produce a synergic design of an integrated and unified middleware can permit the deployment of all viable and available services that make possible to consider new properties for fruition, mainly connected with the new features of context-awareness. Many different provisioning scenarios are on the way, from the possibility of providing non-strict real-time data streaming adapted to very different wireless devices, by taking advantage of caching and multicast wherever possible, to a possibility of creating dynamic and impromptu communities based on common current locality and on presently available heterogeneous devices, by taking into account different resources and energy consumption limitations. This first workshop intends to put together different experiences by providing a forum for researchers and engineers in academia and industry to compare and exchange new ideas, research results, experiences, and products about different aspects related to Ubiquitous and Mobile Internet. Ubiquitous services impose new requirements to the entire infrastructure, from the system to the middleware and the applications that should be able to adapt traditional services to different mobile user terminals and profiles, and embed new functions and tools to support the new services and new requirements of the future scenario. The new Internet service infrastructure can only succeed on the basis of a strict synergism between the heterogeneous variety of mobile wireless devices and the fixed network organization that should suite and follow the requirements and constraints imposed by the wireless and mobile counterpart. The specific limitations of mobile wireless devices, such as discontinuity in connections, disconnection, and energy and resource shortages, connected with the new location- and context-sensitivity property, are challenging issues that call for a re-examination on the design of the middleware of both the fixed and the mobile counterpart. Only a new methodology to produce a synergic design of an integrated and unified middleware can permit the deployment of all viable and available services that make possible to consider new properties for fruition, mainly connected with the new features of context-awareness. Many different provisioning scenarios are on the way, from the possibility of providing non-strict real-time data streaming adapted to very different wireless devices, by taking advantage of caching and multicast wherever possible, to a possibility of creating dynamic and impromptu communities based on common current locality and on presently available heterogeneous devices, by taking into account different resources and energy consumption limitations. This first workshop intends to put together different experiences by providing a forum for researchers and engineers in academia and industry to compare and exchange new ideas, research results, experiences, and products about different aspects related to Ubiquitous and Mobile Internet. This workshop is intended to cover contributions in both the design and analysis of discrete algorithms and the system modelling in the context of mobile, wireless, ad-hoc, and sensor networks. Submissions should report concrete, significant, and transferable results that help advance the state of the art in pervasive computing. All papers will be peer-reviewed by members of the PERVASIVE 2005 program committee and by additional expert reviewers from relevant research communities. PERVASIVE 2005 requires that submissions have not been published previously and that papers submitted are not under simultaneous review for any other conference, journal or other publication. Papers for PERVASIVE 2005 should be formatted according to the Springer-Verlag LNCS style. We solicit papers of up to 18 pages but explicitly welcome shorter papers of up to 10 pages for presentation of pointed results. All paper submissions will be treated as full papers but it is important that their length is appropriate for their content. Paper submissions have to be anonymized to facilitate blind review. Authors should take care throughout their paper that their and their institution's identity is not revealed. However relevant references to an author's previous research should not be suppressed as they may be required for reviewers to understand and evaluate the paper's contribution. They will become smaller, more appropriate for their use, integrated into everyday objects and often virtually or physically invisible to the users. They will be also deployed in a much higher quantity and penetrate many application areas To provide such features and functionality, computer devices become tinier yet still increase in complexity; they must consume less power, while still supporting advanced computation and communications, such that they are highly connected yet still operate as autonomous units. This brings several research topics to the fore, including ultra-low power consumption, self-awareness, adaptive networking, smart behavior of systems, scalability and complexity of devices and systems. Pervasive and ubiquitous computing research addresses such issues by developing concepts and technology for interweaving computers into our everyday life. The principle approach is to enhance system functionality and adaptability by recognizing context and situations in the environment. Organic computing then addresses high system complexity by drawing analogies from complex biological systems, with the human-centered goal of self-organization. Organic computing investigates the design and implementation of self-managing systems that are selfconfiguring, self-optimizing, self-healing, self-protecting, context aware, and anticipatory. ARCS 2004 will emphasize the design, realization and analysis of the emerging computing systems for organic and pervasive computing and their scientific, engineering, and commercial applications. The conference focuses on system aspects of organic and pervasive computing in software and hardware. In particular, system integration and self-management of hardware, software and networks are in the centre of interest. ARCS 2005 continues and replaces the biennial series of German Conferences on Architecture of Computing Systems. This 18th conference in the series serves as a forum to present current work on all aspects of computer and systems architecture. Besides its main focus, the conference is open for more general and interdisciplinary themes in operating systems, networking, and computer architecture. WoWMoM 2005 technical program committee is soliciting papers addressing the research challenges toward a world of wireless, mobile, and multimedia pervasive communications. Two types of contributions will be accepted: FULL PAPERS. Full Papers must present original, previously unpublished, complete works, validated by experimentation, simulation, or analysis. Practical experiences and experimental efforts are welcome. POSITION PAPERS. Papers in this category must be visionary, innovative and forward-looking. They must offer new perspectives opening future research directions, rather than by presenting mature work with quantitative results. Only a limited number of slots will be available for position papers that will be reviewed primarily for relevance and originality. Call For Papers 18th International Conference on Architecture of Computing Systems (ARCS) - System Aspects in Organic and Pervasive Computing Innsbruck, Austria, March 14-17, 2005 http://www.teco.edu/arcs05 Extended Paper Submission Deadline: October 3, 2004 ============================================================================================ Future computer systems will be much more integrated into the fabric of everyday life than today's computers are. They will become smaller, more appropriate for their use, integrated into everyday objects and often virtually or physically invisible to the users. They will be also deployed in a much higher quantity and penetrate many application areas. To provide such features and functionality, computer devices become tinier yet still increase in complexity; they must consume less power, while still supporting advanced computation and communications, such that they are highly connected yet still operate as autonomous units. This brings several research topics to the fore, including ultra-low power consumption, self-awareness, adaptive networking, smart behavior of systems, scalability and complexity of devices and systems. Pervasive and ubiquitous computing research addresses such issues by developing concepts and technology for interweaving computers into our everyday life. The principle approach is to enhance system functionality and adaptability by recognizing context and situations in the environment. Organic computing then addresses high system complexity by drawing analogies from complex biological systems, with the human-centered goal of self-organization. Organic computing investigates the design and implementation of self-managing systems that are selfconfiguring, self-optimizing, self-healing, self-protecting, context aware, and anticipatory. ARCS 2004 will emphasize the design, realization and analysis of the emerging computing systems for organic and pervasive computing and their scientific, engineering, and commercial applications. The conference focuses on system aspects of organic and pervasive computing in software and hardware. In particular, system integration and self-management of hardware, software and networks are in the centre of interest. ARCS 2005 continues and replaces the biennial series of German Conferences on Architecture of Computing Systems. This 18th conference in the series serves as a forum to present current work on all aspects of computer and systems architecture. Besides its main focus, the conference is open for more general and interdisciplinary themes in operating systems, networking, and computer architecture. Meeting the grand challenges of autonomic computing requires scientific and technological advances in a wide variety of fields, as well as new software and system architectures that support the effective integration of the constituent technologies. The purpose of the 2nd International Conference on Autonomic Computing (ICAC'05) is to bring together researchers from different fields of research who are addressing aspects of self- management in computing systems. In doing so, we hope to develop and nurture a community that can work together to realize the vision of large-scale self-managing systems. Papers are solicited on a broad array of topics of relevance to autonomic computing; particularly those that bear on connections and relationships among different areas of research or report on prototype systems or experiences. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Autonomic computing systems or prototype systems that exhibit self-monitoring, self-configuration, self- optimization, self-healing, and/or self-protection. - Software architectures for self-managing systems, based on Open Grid Services, Web Services, or novel paradigms based on biological, economic, social, or other analogies. - Specific self-managing components, such as server, client, database, storage, or network elements. Emphasis should be placed on interactions with other components, or techniques or lessons that may generalize to other components. - Toolkits, environments, models, languages, runtime and compiler technologies for building self-managing components, systems or applications. - New technologies supporting system management, such as service-level agreements, negotiation or conversation support, and behavior enforcement. - System-level technologies, middleware or services that entail interactions among two or more components of self- managing systems, such as health monitoring, dependency analysis, problem localization or remediation, workload management, and provisioning. - Interfaces to autonomic systems, including user interfaces, interfaces for monitoring and controlling behavior, and techniques for defining, distributing, and understanding policies. - Fundamental science of self-managing systems: understanding, controlling, or exploiting emergent behavior, theoretical investigations of coupled feedback loops, predictive methods, robustness, and related topics. - Experiences with autonomic system or component prototypes: measurements, evaluations, or analyses of system behavior, user studies, or experiences with large-scale deployments of self-managing systems or applications. PAPER AND POSTER SUBMISSIONS Full papers (up to 8 pages in length) and posters (2 pages) are invited on a wide variety of topics relating to autonomic computing as indicated above. All manuscripts will be reviewed and judged on correctness, originality, technical strength, significance, quality of presentation, and interest and relevance to the conference. Submitted papers may not have appeared in or be under consideration for another conference or a journal, nor may they be under review or submitted to another forum during the ICAC-05 review process. Posters are not subject to any of these restrictions. Authors should submit full papers or posters electronically (PDF or postscript) via the ICAC-05 conference web site at http://www.autonomic-conference.org and should use IEEE CS format.
