IEEE Pervasive Computing magazine invites articles relating to system software for ubiquitous computing environments. They will evaluate the proposed solution and so contribute to our knowledge of software for these systems in general. The workshop will address the challenge of 'top-to-bottom' information management in disadvantaged (unreliable, low bandwidth or energy-constrained) mobile wireless military communication networks. Crucial issues relating to communication and networking in hostile environments span the entire layered structure from the physical layer up through the session layer. The conventional way to implement networks is to use a strictly layered structure, in which these issues are addressed separately, while defining interfaces to higher and lower layer functions. Although such an approach may be appropriate for wired networks, the characteristics of wireless networks suggest that improved performance may be obtained by addressing these issues in a coordinated (or "cross-layer") fashion. This workshop will address alternative approaches to various aspects of the communication/networking problem, and will assess the potential benefits that may be achieved through the vertical integration of layer functionality, with emphasis on improved collaboration with user applications to achieve optimal information management over a disadvantaged network. The topic will be of interest to military or scientific personnel concerned with the efficient use of limited resources in disadvantaged communications environments. Our keynote presentation will be given by Dr. Michael B. Pursley, Holcombe Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Clemson University. In particular, although there have been significant improvements in processor design and computing, advances in battery technology still lag behind, making energy resource the ultimate bottleneck in wireless sensor networking. The purpose of this issue is to disseminate state-of-the-art approaches and novel techniques that will advance basic knowledge and understanding of wireless sensor networks. We are particularly interested in soliciting papers that study fundamental performance limits and tradeoffs that are brought about by energy constraints and that are unique to the wireless sensor networks. Unsere alltägliche Umwelt wird in die Lage versetzt, unsere Ziele und Bedürfnisse zu erkennen und kann uns intelligent und situationsgerecht unterstützen. Projekte wie Oxygen am MIT, Ambience in der EU oder die BMB+F-Leitprojekte EMBASSI und SmartKom entwickeln Beispiele für solche Umgebungen. Die Realisierung intelligenter Umgebungen im praktischen Einsatz außerhalb der Labore erfordert jedoch die Interoperabilität von Diensten und Geräten, die Fähigkeit zur dynamischen Vernetzung und zur Selbstorganisation. Technologien wie UPnP, Rendezvous und JINI bilden hierfür wichtige Grundlagen. Darüber hinaus ist aber die Fähigkeit zur semantischen Selbstorganisation notwendig, zur spontanen und automatischen Kooperation multimedialer Dienste und Geräte zur Erkennung und Erfüllung der Nutzerbedürfnisse. Die Entwicklung von hierfür geeigneten Software-Technologien ist Gegenstand aktueller Forschungs- und Entwicklungsaktivitäten. Ziel: Ziel dieses Workshops ist die Vorstellung und kritische Diskussion aktueller Lösungsansätze für selbstorganisierende Multimedia-Appliances vor dem Hintergrund der Einsetzbarkeit in der Praxis. Wir wollen ein Anforderungsportfolio für die praxisorientierte Weiterentwicklung dieser Konzepte entwickeln und Strategien für die Koordination der verschiedenen Entwicklungsaktivitäten identifizieren. Im Anschluss an den Workshop ist die konstituierende Sitzung des GI-Arbeitskreises Interaktive Anwendungen für mobile und ubiquitäre Systeme geplant, in dessen Rahmen dieses Thema weiter verfolgt werden soll. However, building physical interfaces is non-trivial, requiring knowledge of low-level hardware and software details. These difficulties echo the experiences of the GUI community twenty years ago. Tangible user interface (TUI) toolkits have the potential to simplify physical prototyping just as GUI toolkits have improved graphical prototyping. This workshop will be a collaboration between tangible user interface designers and toolkit developers. TUI designers should give perspectives on the domain they are designing for, prototyping techniques they use, and difficulties they encounter. Toolkit developers should present their toolkit solution or project, and its particular strengths and weaknesses for rapidly prototyping TUIs. The experiences here include activities such as writing, drawing, speaking, meeting, sports, traveling etc., in personal or group context, and interactions with other people and/or artifacts. Recorded experiences by means of digital video, tactile sensors, location tracking device, etc. can be used as a source for various tasks in daily life, business, education and security. They include, for example, multi-media memory aids, reference for context recognition, creation of a model of person's activities and story-telling of life. The useful and computational log can be obtained by ubiquitous sensor networks and effective tagging systems. --- There are many research projects on ubiquitous sensor network for recording events, wearable device for personal event recording, real-world oriented CSCW, interaction analysis by ethnological approach, and privacy issues. This situation is worse in work environments where users, rather than sitting at a desk all the time, would like to use whatever devices are available at each location for carrying out their work and for impromptu collaboration. They allow initial tests of new methods and algorithms without the need for time consuming data collection.Even more important, they provide an objective basis for the evaluation and comparison of algorithms. As the field of context recognition grows and becomes more mature, the need for such publicly available, standard data sets and benchmarks is becoming more and more obvious. The organizers see the workshop as a first step towards generating such data sets and benchmarks. To this end, we invite all interested researchers to present their views on relevant scenarios, sensors sets, data formats, mechanism for repository management and other related issues. In this workshop we build on a notion that decisions influenced by trust, privacy, security and context are not treated in isolation, rather there exists a system of balanced reasoning that interrelates these concerns. Such a widespreading may have a strong impact on society and environment, by the way equipments and technical infrastructures for everyday life will be designed, and by the way the social and environmental issues of technology will be managed. Despite the promising facilities it will bring on, pervasive computing has indeed some darks sides, which must be early taken into account if we want to achieve a sustainable development. The goal of the workshop is then to bring together interdisciplinary contributors for enabling to set up the foundations of a sustainable pervasive computing. People from any discipline concerned by pervasive computing deployement (e.g. from computer science, business, urbanism, architecture, mobility, health care and medicine, energy, waste management, ethics, technology assessment, law, etc), and interested in sharing their works, experiences, or ideas for reaching this goal are welcome to the workshop.
