Despite the improved capabilities and breadth of available sensor systems, those used for intelligent transportation have remained relatively uniform across platforms; as a result, the algorithms and techniques being designed do not take full advantage of the rich information modern sensors can provide. Since all tasks -- including perception, localisation, decision-making, and learning -- are built on top of sensing, exploring alternative approaches to sensing is a compelling research area that can render all subsequent tasks more robust and accurate. The objective of this special session is to explore unconventional sensing for intelligent transportation in three ways. Firstly, it will investigate sensor systems that are not typically applied to certain transportation tasks, such as radar for precise localisation, audio for failure detection, and RF sensing for road traffic estimation. Secondly, it will explore untraditional sensor configurations and placements, such as ground-facing cameras using shadows to detect occluded moving objects. Lastly, it will look into the sensing of commonly overlooked information, such as the use of atmospheric sensors for gauging road surface traction or in-vehicle sensors for driving analysis. Via these three themes, this special session aims to stimulate discussion and research into untraditional sensing in order to improve the reliability and accuracy of transportation systems. The emerging IoT paradigm with the Big Data paradigm, provides the foundations to extract common knowledge from data made available by humans, institutions, or smart objects for supporting decision making. The paradigms of Crowdsourcing and Mobile Crowdsensing (MCS) have long been used to seek contributions from a crowd of participants who commit to perform certain agreed tasks. With the omnipresence of IoT, underpinned by mobile smart devices, IoT-Crowdsensing (IoT-CS) is gaining increased interest where smart mobile devices and IoT devices undertake the task of collecting data about phenomena of interest. Although fascinating and potentially disruptive, this paradigm inherently carry a set of technical challenges at various levels, which should be studied by different research communities: battery efficiency, efficient participant recruiting, data aggregation and processing, data quality, incentivization techniques, mobility, application semantics and privacy to name some of the hot facets of IoT-CS. In line with such objectives, this workshop aims to provide a platform for researchers and practitioners to discuss and share the current and emerging state-of-the-art, challenges and solutions in IoT-CS specifically targeting Smart Cities. In the past decade, the research community have produced proven solutions to build low-power mesh networks. Traditionally, the focus has been on short-range radio communication (e.g., ZigBee, Bluetooth, and ZWave.). An appealing alternative that have gained momentum in the IoT landscape, is to equip the nodes with long-range low power radio modules. As a result, long-range radio communication technologies (e.g., SigFox, LoRa, NB-IoT, and 802.15.4g) are considered as candidate technologies for many low-power wide area network (LPWAN) applications, especially those that require extended coverage such as citywide sensing, environmental monitoring, or remote infrastructure monitoring. The aim of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the field of IoT from both academia and industry, to discuss and explore short- and long-range solutions, the tradeoffs between these two paradigms, as well as how they can be used in synergy. In order to push the state of the art, several points need to be addressed: new features for the long-range technologies (i.e., over-the-air updates, roaming), radio resource management, regulations and policies on spectrum usage and sharing, business case analysis that are more well suited for certain vertical markets. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - protocol design - hardware platform design - modeling and analysis of low-power short or/and long-range communication - reliability, adaptability, and dependability of short and long-range communication solutions - new features for the long-range technologies (i.e., over-the-air updates, roaming) - wake-up radios for short- or/and long-range technologies - radio resource management - applications domains (e.g., smart cities, smart health, smart buildings, smart transportation) - deployment experiences, case studies, and lessons learned - evaluation and testbeds - regulations and policies on spectrum usage and sharing - business case analysis that are more well suited for certain vertical markets. Task offloading technology can break through the resource limitations of IoT devices, reduce the computing load and improve the task processing efficiency. Optimizing DNNs through task offloading has become a new direction in edge intelligence research. Deep learning driven approaches can facilitate offloading decision making, dynamic resource allocation and content caching, benefit in coping with the growth in volumes of communication and computation for emerging IoT applications. However, how to customize deep learning techniques for task offloading in IoTs is still under discussion. Learning algorithms in edge computing are still immature and inefficient. The goal of the IOIoT Workshop is devoted to the most recent developments of intelligent offloading technologies for IoT and and edge computing. Industry experience reports and empirical studies are also welcome. An edge system is composed of any computing and networking resources along the path between data sources and cloud data centers. Depending on the specific computing needs, edge computing devices can use either a wireless or a wired connection to exchange messages with the data sources. IoT devices and sensors can then exploit the hierarchical structure of the edge and cloud system to analyze the collected data and provide useful information to users in a timely manner. Industrial agriculture has many advantages. For example, the use of specialized machinery lightens farmer’s labor intensity. Large-scale monoculture crops planting and intensive farming achieve higher food yields with lower price. In plant factory, the cultivation environment can be artificially controlled, so the vegetables grow faster than in outdoor conditions. Precision agriculture helps to save use of fertilizer and water. Solar photovoltaic power harvesting and wireless energy transfer is a key approach to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels. Smart microclimate control in greenhouse and plant factory enables deep understanding on the interaction between gene, environment and phenotype. The scale of the IoT is set to have a major economic, social and environmental impacts; the intersection of which forms the future sustainable growth. The IEEE International Workshop on Internet of Things: Networking Applications and Technologies (IoTNAT 2020) Symposium will be held in conjunction with The 5th International Conference on Fog and Mobile Edge Computing (FMEC 2020). The IoTNAT 2020 Symposium aims at soliciting original ideas on the broad area of IoT including challenges and opportunities, concepts and applications and future trends. The Symposium aims to facilitate discussions among academics and IoT practitioners and make positive contributions to the field. Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished manuscripts. Submission Details The conference solicits both full and short papers. Submissions will be reviewed through a double-blind process, and evaluated on the basis of intellectual merit, originality, importance of contribution to the field, soundness and strength of evaluation (for full papers), quality and clarity of presentation, and appropriate comparison to related work. Full papers may be up to 10 pages in length, excluding references, following the ACM SIGCOMM format, and should convey the results of mature research. Short papers may be up to 6 pages in length, excluding references. This enables innovative deployment models of IoT applications, however, energy efficiency still a big issue in this environment. For WSNs, energy and powering have long been the main challenges that hampers autonomous and perpetual operation of such systems. As such power efficiency algorithms, systems, intelligence and platforms have been and are constantly being investigated and solution pursued and proposed constantly. Of particular interest, in this domain, are energy-harvesting wireless sensor networks (EH-WSNs), whether fully autonomous or backed by batteries. The EHWSNs which are fully powered by environmentally harvested energy constitute the most appealing solutions that strive to meet the target of enabling large scale deployment of WSNs in “set and forget” scenarios. With these desirable features, which are becoming reality from the industrial side, are emerging challenges to the networking community in proposing networking software, platforms and protocols which are fully context-aware and more importantly, power-aware to ensure synchronized and timely scheduling of the data transmission rounds/cycles in an opportunistic manner. This workshop is inviting contributions that fall into this context, whether these are networking platforms, systems or protocols that are energy-efficient, context-aware and supportive of EH-WSNs or AI/ML assisted methods for enhancing power efficiency in IoT Systems. Formatting Papers should adhere to the IEEE Conference formatting requirements using the templates available here, and should not exceed 10 pages excluding references. Your goal as an author is to produce a readable submission that complies with the formatting constraints. Violating the formatting requirements to squeeze in additional material will result in your submission being returned without being reviewed. Plagiarism and Submission Policy Papers must present original contributions and can neither be previously published nor under review by another conference or journal. Papers containing plagiarized material will be subject to the IEEE plagiarism policy and possible penalties, and will be rejected without review. Submissions and Anonymity Papers submitted to the conference will be reviewed through a double-blind review process, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers (and that of the reviewers from the authors). Achieving this goal requires some care to, on the one hand, preserve the anonymity of your submission, while on the other hand ensuring proper coverage of related past work, including your own. While this may seem challenging, the few basic steps listed below will go a long way towards achieving the desired outcome: Remove all authors' identifiers, e.g., names, emails, and affiliations, from the title page. Remove acknowledgments to and identifiers of funding sources. Use anonymous names for your files, as source file names are often embedded in the final output you generate, and therefore accessible as comments. When referring to your own related work, refer to it in the third person as you would with any other related work by another author. Besides anonymizing your submission, double-blind reviewing also imposes additional requirements on both authors and reviewers. The new deadlines are: - Paper registration and abstract deadline: Feb 3, 2020, 11.59pm PST - Papers submission deadline: Feb 10, 2020, 11.59pm PST We hope that this gives authors a few more days to prepare their submission.
