With rapid economic development, the number of vehicles on the road has grown dramatically, which introduces an array of traffic-related issues, such as traffic congestion and driving safety. Intelligent connected vehicles (ICVs) can provide a safer and greener transportation system, which has been envisioned as an effective measure to resolve traffic problems. ICVs are expected to run many emerging smart applications (e.g., autonomous driving, safety early warning, natural language processing, etc.) to assist both the drivers and passengers in vehicular environments. These kinds of applications typically require significant computing power to perform computation-intensive and latency-sensitive tasks generated by the vehicle sensors for low-latency response. However, the limited computation capacity of the on-board computer makes it difficult to satisfy the computation requirements of quality-of-experience (QoE)-demanding applications. To tackle this challenge, fog/edge computing are proposed as innovative computing paradigms to extend computing capacity to the network edge in order to meet the requirements. Fog/edge computing is expected to not only maximize the computation capability and alleviate the greenhouse effect, but also achieve sustainable operation by pushing rich computing and storage resources to the edge of the network. The limited computation capacity of the on-board computer brings about an unprecedented challenge for the future development of ICVs. Fog/edge computing provides cloud computing capacity in close proximity to vehicles. Vehicles can migrate the computing to the edge of the network via vehicle to everything (V2X) communication. Processing can be completed at road-side unit (RSU) at the side of the network. The advancement of communication technologies and edge computing, such as Fifth-generation (5G), Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Function Virtualization (NFV), mobile edge/fog computing and so on, makes it possible to enhance computational capabilities, ensure near-real-time responses and realize communication requirements with ultra-low latency and ultra-high reliability. The Special Section in IEEE Access aims to provide the latest research findings and solutions, in terms of communication and edge computing for ICVs. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * New architecture and framework establishment based on fog/edge computing for ICVs * Advanced vehicular networks technologies, such as 5G vehicular networks, LTE-V and so on * Ultra-reliable and low-latency communications for ICVs * Resource allocation and management based on fog/edge computing for ICVs * Machine learning, deep learning for intelligent management and control * Joint analysis of communication and computing to improve performance in vehicular networks * Cross-layer optimization for fog/edge computing * Mobility modeling and management for ICVs * SDN and NFV technologies for vehicular networks * Security and privacy challenges We also highly recommend the submission of multimedia with each article as it significantly increases the visibility, downloads, and citations of articles. A technology prototype can range from a mockup using computers (instead of actual consumer devices) to a full-fledged collection of networked consumer devices. Be as specific as possible in describing what you will show. In addition to the proposal to be published, an additional e-mail should be sent to the chairs, including space, power and networking requirements. Demonstration proposals will be evaluated by a Committee including representatives of venture capitalists. Proposals will be evaluated mainly based on their potential to stimulate interesting discussions, exchange of ideas, and promote collaborations. The further integration of the Internet of Things within the ICPS scenario triggered considerable research efforts within the new Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) paradigm, with application scenarios like smart factories, smart energy grids, smart transportation systems, etc. One of the defining features of ICPS is the involvement of a large amount of cooperative computational elements tasked with the control of time-critical and mission-critical physical entities. These strict requirements are also shared by the IIoT scenario to provide unprecedented vertical integration, specialized high-level services, enhanced interoperability and availability. Furthermore, an ever more rising and ubiquitous trend in this IIoT context is represented by Digital Twins, where a real-time update of a large amount of data from the physical system is required to update the corresponding digital replica. As a consequence, both the computing architecture and the communication networks and protocols call for novel paradigms, albeit satisfying stringent low latency, high reliability and availability, safety, and security requirements. Traditional computing and communication and paradigms are not properly equipped to fulfill all these requirements, as they are typically designed to optimize different performance metrics and application scenarios. Hence, new paradigms are emerging, significantly changing the landscape of industrial automation systems and networks. In the computational realm, edge/fog computing is gaining popularity to leverage the enhanced capabilities of end devices, and at the same time, the interest in virtualization techniques is steadily increasing, with the aim of increasing the quality, timeliness and reliability of time-critical tasks. The new generations of communication systems, both wired and wireless, are also focused on ultra-reliable and ultra-low latency information delivery, as well as on enhanced features to enable time- sensitive operations, highlighted by the developing 5G and TSN standards. A common trend in both areas is the increasing adoption of approaches based on machine/deep learning to improve the adaptiveness of such system to different applications and environments. All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality and relevance through single-blind peer review. Only original papers that have not been published or submitted for review elsewhere will be considered. Submitted papers should be written in the English language, with a maximum length limit of 9 printed pages, including all the figures, references, and appendices. Papers longer than 9 pages will not be reviewed. All papers must be submitted in the Portable Document Format (PDF) electronically using EDAS. When submitting the paper, the title, all co-authors, and a concise abstract of up to 200 words should be provided to EDAS: https://edas.info/N25747 as the metadata of the paper. HotMobile's small workshop format makes it ideal for presenting and discussing new directions or controversial approaches. The deadline for submissions is *October 15, 2019, 11:59pm EDT*. Acceptance notifications will be sent by December 15, 2018. Presenting at HotMobile is a good way to get early feedback on research ideas at least one year away from a full-fledged conference submission to ACM MobiSys or other high-quality conferences. A full-length paper on the same topic submitted to a conference in less than a year is unlikely to include sufficient new material and mature ideas to warrant publication. As is customary, papers must not have been published elsewhere and may not be simultaneously under submission at another venue. However, it remains essential that all these devices work in a coherent manner to perform a collective action. This makes the task of resource provisioning extremely important in such a paradigm. The end-user level in IoT mostly comprise of the low computation and communication powered devices. An improper utilization of the available resources in such a scenario burdens the complete system and degrades the quality of service. In such a scenario, the use of cloud computing techniques can help to manage the resources effectively. More so, with the emergence of relatively newer cloud-based technologies such as edge and fog computing, resource management in the IoT has become far more effective. These technologies bring the computation and communication capabilities closer to the IoT devices where some of the services can be offloaded to the edge devices. These devices are called IoT edge devices and they provide a unique opportunity to tackle some of the existing and pertinent issues for resource management in IoT paradigms; yet at the same time, they face their own set of challenges. However, the use of IoT edge devices in a traditional IoT paradigm results in better utilization of the available resources as well as improving the overall quality of service. Keeping this in mind, this special issue will address the resource management in IoT edge devices with the focus on various challenges faced, and potential techniques and solutions to address such challenges by leveraging IoT edge devices. The researchers, both at the academic and industrial level, working on resource management in IoT edge devices can share their latest results to create wider awareness about their schemes. A tutorial on Visible Light Communication: An Academic and Industrial Perspective The Enlight'em consortium invites the research community to a tutorial on Visible Light Communication (VLC). The tutorial will have two main parts. SCOPE The International Conference on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks (EWSN) is a highly selective single-track international conference focusing on the latest research results on embedded systems and wireless networking, key enablers for visionary scenarios such as the Internet of Things and Cyber-Physical Systems. After last year’s positive experience in China, the 17th edition returns to Europe in Lyon, France. The conference continues its aim for broad, world-wide impact. TOPICS OF INTEREST The conference solicits both full technical papers and short papers describing validated early ideas. Specific topics of interest include but are not limited to: - Communication and networking for wireless and embedded systems - Sensing, actuation, and control - Operating systems, middleware, and services - Processing, storage, and management of data - Programming paradigms, languages, and tools - Time and location management - Dependability (real-time, reliability, availability, safety) - Privacy and security in applications and systems - Human-machine interaction with wireless and embedded systems - Design and implementation of real-world applications and systems - Measurement studies and deployment experiences - Green IoT (low-power, harvesting, energy management) - Challenges of ultra dense networks - Heterogeneous networks - Applications and problems from developing countries and emerging markets As always, contributions are welcome across the entire scope of the conference. As the relevant environments grow increasingly diverse and dense, we encourage contributions addressing this increased heterogeneity, and ultra dense networks. Papers highlighting novel ideas that are not ready for extensive evaluations, report on new tools and platforms with limited evaluation, or topics that could be adequately described in a short format are invited for submission as short papers. Initial explorations of profound problems in developing countries that have been addressed using IoT solutions may also be appropriate short paper submissions. The conference proceedings will appear in the ACM Digital Library. Selected accepted papers will be fast-tracked to ACM Transactions on Sensor Networks (TOSN) or ACM Transactions on the Internet of Things (TIOT). SUBMISSION Submissions to EWSN 2020 must be original (i.e., not previously published) and not currently under review by any other conference or journal. EWSN 2020 will adopt a double-blind review process. Authors must make a good faith effort to anonymize their submissions to ensure that their identities are not disclosed to reviewers and reviewers are discouraged from actively working to uncover author identities. To promote early dissemination, submission to arXiv (or similar) is allowed, provided cross-citations are not made. Formatting requirements. Both full (10-12 pages) and short papers (4-6 pages) are welcome. Authors should carefully consider this choice as full papers will not be considered as short paper candidates during the review phase. Pages must use 8.5" x 11" (letter) two-column format, using 10-point type on 11-point leading, with a maximum text block of 7" wide x 9" deep with an inter-column spacing of .25".
