Cooperative collision avoidance aims at protecting VRUs by assuming that they are able to communicate their position with nearby cars by using mobile devices. In this approach, vehicles and VRUs exchange information, like their respective movement vectors for detecting whether a collision is possible or not. Mobile devices offer a wide range of sensors, which enable the recognition of specific contexts of VRUs, like for example whether a pedestrian runs towards an intersection or crosses a curb. Those contexts indicate unsafe VRU movements and can be used to improve collision avoidance in terms of collision detection performance, position accuracy, energy efficiency and more. This workshop aims at addressing these and similar challenges for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Car2VRU related scenarios. In addition to vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-roadside (V2R) interactions, as foreseen in traditional VANETs, IoV focuses on the smart integration between humans, vehicles and things to provide not only conventional safety and infotainment applications but also advanced transportation-related services, including autonomous and green driving. Because, the disaster management organizations such as fire brigades, rescue teams, and emergency medical service providers have high priority and broadband demand to exchange information among team and with the victims by using mission-critical voice and data communication. To fulfill these demands, a standalone architecture is desired that can enable communication during the disaster situations. Moreover, broadband in public safety gives law enforcement the advantage to access information, stream video, and collaborate in real time. Law enforcement and border control remains the largest application of public safety LTE. To develop the standalone architecture and technologies, currently many organizations are developing LTE-based disaster support architecture because of its capability to provide the bandwidth efficient solutions. Technologies used in existing narrowband critical communications networks such as Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) and Project25 (P25) have been in use for about 20 years now. These networks are well developed and effective in supporting only voice applications but are not suitable for future higher bandwidth applications with the requirements of high data/video transmissions. Thus, the MC services are expected to evolve into the future by taking inputs from critical communications industries regarding architecture, technologies, and service requirements. Since, in disaster situation there is a possibility of complete architectural disaster, so to enable voice/data communication in this situation, the unmanned air vehicle (UAV)/robots can be used to provide the communication setup by enabling the path towards the core network. Moreover, Device-to-Device (D2D), Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications are the key drivers in the emergency situation for exchanging information from the MC site in the absence of network infrastructure to provide MC voice and data services. To provide these services 3GPP included the Mission-critical push-to-talk (MCPTT) functionality into LTE standard which is the first major step in a series of MC Services and functionalities demanded by the market. Recently, 3GPP Release 14 added various enhancements to its repertoire related to MCPTT, MC Data, and MC Video. Hence, the Release 14 MC services not only required new protocols and security enhancements but also enhancements in existing MCPTT services to enable reuse of common functionalities. Similarly, the Release 15, that will be the first phase of 5G, is expecting more enhancements in MC services. The main objective of this special section is to bring most recent advances in physical layer of mission critical communication technologies. Moreover, its goal is to address the challenges related to mission critical services. Authors are required to submit previously unpublished papers in this special issue. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can play an important role in smart agriculture by collecting environmental data. Their ability to carry different type of payloads such as sensors, high definition cameras, antennas, or even sprayers make it a great ally for agriculturalists. In large-scale applications, e.g., wide area farms, forests or even sea farms, a cluster or a network of UAVs is adopted by opening new paths of research and development in a field which is called Flying Ad hoc Network (FANET). FANETs incorporate UAVs and Internet of Things (IoT) as communicating entities for realizing more demanding and large-scale applications. There is no doubt that with the proper collaboration and coordination of multiple UAVs, in a form of FANET, the emerged system would exceed by far the capabilities of a single UAV system. Single UAV systems usually utilize heavier, larger and more expensive UAVs which in case of a fall could pose great danger to human life and property. Using a single UAV, the amount of coverage is limited, while with multi-UAVs the scalability of the operation can be easily extended. Moreover, a failure in singe UAV system means that the whole mission has failed, on the contrary, multiple UAVs can share tasks among themselves, thus the fault tolerant of the system increases significantly. Since the number of applications a single UAV can serve are proportionate to the systems that are installed on its board, it is quite clear that FANETs can server different application in parallel thus reducing significantly the execution time of a mission. It is quite obvious that FANETs can enhance smart farming management process significantly. Prerequisite for their deployment is a network that will guarantee the proper communication between UAVs in order to ensure their efficient collaboration and coordination. FANETs take on the communication among UAV nodes as well as the rest of the nodes (ground sensors, base stations and gateways). Although there are various advantages of FANETs, when compared to single-UAV systems, several challenges are emerged when implementing FANETs in smart farming systems such as the efficient communication and the coordination among the various flying UAVs and among the UAVs and the ground sensors, base stations and gateways. This Special Issue seeks to make an in-depth, critical contribution to this evolving field of FANET in conjunction with smart farming and smart agriculture applications and systems. Edge Computing and Edge-enabled AI for Network Management Chairs: Paolo Bellavista, Luca Foschini, Carlo Giannelli Edge computing is rapidly emerging as the most relevant architectural approach to manage some hard and open technical challenges associated with wide-scale and quality-sensitive Internet of Things (IoT) applications, which typically exploit the elastic availability of cloud resources on the server side. EAINM specifically focuses on network quality configuration, optimization, configuration, control, and management enabled by edge computing in three-layer deployment environments (device, edge, cloud). In particular, EAINM considers as central all methodological, design, implementation, and deployment experiences that investigate digital twin creation at the cloud layer and distributed enforcement of twin control actions also at the edge, typically with complex machine learning processing at the cloud side and more lightweight digital twin execution and refinement at edge nodes. Contributions about enabling AI techniques for these architectures and practical application prototyping/deployment experiences (e.g., for manufacturing production quality control and optimized management of distributed caching) are strongly welcome. Aspects and trends of software evaluation Chairs: George Tsihrintzis, Maria Virvou Software applications are evolving rapidly and are expanding their use to all the areas of human activity by the means of all sorts of hardware, including computers, handheld devices, smart things, digital signage etc. The vast use of software in many contexts imposes the need for the development of new evaluation methodologies, frameworks and processes to address software quality characteristics that include reliability, reusability, effectiveness, correctness, accuracy and also security and privacy that conform to new law regulations. Moreover, the important software quality characteristics of usability, user friendliness and utility have to be ensured for end users of a vast range of disciplines and backgrounds. Modeling and Evaluation of Wireless Body Area Networks Chair: Yahya Osais Wireless Body Area Not (WBAN) are networks of medical sensors which are attached or implanted into the body of a human being or animal to monitor and control biological processes. Their performance is limited by their constrained resources and side effects such as heat. Before the full potential of WBANs can be realized, many fundamental issues must be studied using performance evaluation tools and measurements. However, the state of the art in Smart Farming should be redefined and revisited since new technologies and tools are coming in the agriculture domain bringing novel and innovative paths for improving the resilience and the efficiency of agriculture. Smart Farming has started to be materialized and not being simply a vague futuristic concept, as different fields such as image processing and machine learning have found a prosperous area of application. Apart from the technical aspects that Smart Farming presents, it also affects the agricultural sector beyond the conventional farming activities, influencing a series of dependent industries, such as food supply chains, weather and climate change, natural resources management and environmental impact. New and various technologies have invaded the agricultural sector as they can offer new and unprecedented opportunities. Smart Farming uses a combination of technological advances, such as sensors, drones, variable-rate application machinery, satellite navigation and positioning technology, and the Internet of Things (IoT), among others. All the aforementioned technologies produce a massive amount of data capable of changing the current status of the agriculture sector, but a series of effective actions have to be developed and established for their efficient exploitation. The Big Data era has arrived for the agriculture sector reflecting its changes to a numerous of research fields. The incorporation and the usage of Geographic Information System (GIS) in the agriculture sector takes place for at least a decade as well as the adoption of sensors for monitoring reasons. Furthermore, driven by advanced GIS technologies, emerging image processing techniques adopt neural networks and deep learning approaches for providing new areas of application in the field of computer vision. Tasks such as crop identification and weed discrimination have become easier than ever thanks to the state-of-the-art classification algorithms. Apart from the advantages image processing techniques offer in the field of agriculture, other related areas have significantly benefited as well. Land mapping, insurance of animal feed quality, weather and climate change studies, grassland identification and earth observation are some of the areas where image processing techniques and algorithms have been successfully applied. The farm industry and Smart Farming expand from the strict limits of the farm location and affect a series of related fields, such as supply chain management, food availability, biodiversity, farmers’ decision making and insurance, environmental studies and various Earth sciences among others. All of the aforementioned fields have significant benefits when they follow a data-driven approach under the condition that the used systems, tools and techniques that will be used have been designed to handle the volume and foremost the variety of the data. Often, smart farming systems are running on unmonitored areas, due to which any attempted or successful breaches go unreported. Worse, since this sector is traditionally not cybersecurity aware, security and privacy by design is not incorporated into the solution requirements. For example, security attacks are feasible by gaining access to irrigation control systems of either a plant or a farm. In the most cases, IoT devices and systems can be manipulated and personal data can be disclosed without the farmer knowing. Even worse, adversaries can gain access to other connected third-party systems, e.g., energy, administration and irrigation systems. This Special Issue seeks to make an in-depth, critical contribution to this evolving field of agriculture in the era of Big Data. We therefore aim to bring together the state-of-the-art research contributions towards providing new insights in the application and benefits of the emerging methods and technologies in the Big Data-driven agriculture sector. In this sense, Industry 4.0 constitutes a relevant investment source composed of a complex technological showcase in which multiple connections and accesses can arise, seriously impacting on the well performance of the different production and distribution chains associated with smart factories and manufacturing, smart grid systems, smart vehicles or smart health environments. This way of connecting entities with the “smart world” and the interconnection of different Industry 4.0 domains based on the new paradigms and heterogeneous technologies such as Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) or edge computing infrastructures (cloud/fog computing systems), certainly, opens the door to coexistence problems and novel exploitations. Diverse vulnerabilities and risks may significantly grow according to the new adaptations and the participation of stakeholders, generating a need to further research protection issues required to safeguard the operational processes and ensure a secure and resilient and dependable cohesion between IT and OT systems, including physical entities. For this reason, industries, governments and scientific communities are increasingly drawing a special attention to competitive advantages that Industry 4.0 can bring about business sustainability and economy of a country. According to CISCO, the number of these devices will reach 50 billion by 2020, forming a very large Internet of Things (VLIoT). This massive number of "smart" objects will cooperate with each other, have their own metadata, and may continuously produce new data (in form of events, sensor data, or actuator states). Data management will be a major challenge in the very large Internet of Things. Hence, efficient IoT infrastructure and technologies must be developed to handle masses of IoT data with high performance. This will include: new techniques to filter and store relevant data; efficient replication approaches for objects with constrained resources in order to increase availability and durability; new protocols for voting about decisions among objects; and smooth integration of heterogeneous objects. The goal of this workshop is to bring together academic researchers and industry practitioners working in the field of IoT and to allow them to report and exchange their findings addressing these challenges. This workshop also intends to discuss other closely-related technologies such as Nanotechnology, Fog-, Edge-, and Dew-Computing for IoT. The ideas of Fog, Edge and Dew Computing may indeed solve or attenuate the problems of a very large Internet of Things (w.r.t. performance, energy-efficiency, as well as security and privacy aspects). ** Types of Papers ** The workshop welcomes contributions describing original ideas, promising new concepts, and practical experience. According to the American Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the majority of the victims in many different scenarios are untrained rescuers and even professional first responders. Accurate information gathered from sensors may allow first-responders and volunteers to make better and faster decisions, understand the situation, identify the rescue actions with higher success probability, correctly allocate resources such as number of ambulances, and prevent or mitigate personal risks. Today, even commonly available technologies, such as cellular phones, could save many lives if properly adopted. There is a compelling need of exploring the feasibility of new technologies, explicitly designed for working in emergency scenarios. Recently in this wide context, the aerial communication has significantly progressed due to longer battery life-time, new international law regulations and microelectronics evolution with lower prices and higher performance. In particular, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can easily and quickly reach far-away locations, scan carefully the area looking for injured people and autonomously create a communication bridge between first responder networks and victims. However, there are several unaddressed challenges on both communication and computational means that might further improve the reactiveness and efficiency of the first response after a natural disaster or human-driven threat. The workshop is focused on main upcoming activities about the involvement of UAVs as emergency communication means during emergency situations. It is open to both scientific and industrial communities, and will disclose the latest research achievements in the research field of fine-grained localization, advanced communication between moving objects and optimal UAV-cell coverage. The main motivation is to gather people involved in public safety innovative actions, encompassing both the mathematical frameworks and realistic solutions to bring intelligence and efficiency on board of UAVs. Such implementations will exploit further the capabilities of Mobile Edge Comping (MEC), wireless virtualization, and Software Defined Systems or Networks (SDNs) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV) among others. Due to the non-linearity of the Quality-of-Experience (QoE) model, the resource manipulation with the solution provided within the context of SDN for MEC devices should be solved concurrently so that the associated performance can be assessed and evaluated. The inclusion of MEC, SDN, and NFV and its possible support for 5G systems are emerging as one of the highly active research areas with a large room for improvements. In addition, one important aspect of great importance is the continuously increasing processing, caching and storage capabilities required by emerging applications such as IoT and virtual reality. The purpose of this special issue is to provide the academic and industrial communities an excellent venue covering all aspects of current work on Fog Computing, Edge Computing and with the long-term architecture that will encompass the differently supported middleware(s).
