Such papers should provide detailed insights into (1) building the testbeds/platforms, (2) lessons learned and (3) implications for further research in the relevant domain. Experience papers shall follow the same submission process as the research papers with an “Experience:” prefix in the title. The COMSNETS main conference will now follow a double-blind review policy. Information about the authors will not be shared with the reviewers during the review process. The submitted paper should be anonymous and not have any reference to the authors names and/or institution. Authors are welcome to release their paper in a non-peer-reviewed location (such as a technical report by your institution or arXiv), but you should not broadcast information about the publication widely. For example, do not post it to large mailing lists or social media forums where PC members would easily encounter it, and do not do general press releases. Authors are also welcome to talk about their work (as work-in-progress) at local institutions. In either case, authors should be aware of PC members who might encounter the work and avoid sharing the work in a way that a PC member would encounter it. The overarching goal is to accelerate the convergence and synergy of communications, computing, and control towards next-generation industrial cyber-physical systems. It is a network-centric architecture, where cloud and fog technologies are leveraged collaboratively to achieve determinism in connectivity, networked computing, and intelligent networked control. Consequently, industrial applications can be realized independent of vendor-specific hardware and software, and further provided as a service with varying degrees of technical and infrastructural requirements, translating into significant business benefits. With the deployment of new wireless technologies to empower almost-deterministic ultra-reliable low-latency communications, a joint design of optimal control and resource management techniques is emerging for time-critical industrial cyber-physical systems, and it is also imperative that functional safety and security of such systems are not compromised. Another focus will be on system-wide/application-level performance, driven by “goal-oriented communication” in the underlying communication technologies. There are currently many open research challenges to enable Cloud-Fog Automation, therefore, a deliberate rethink and research in co-designing and synergizing communications, computing, and control is required. Specifically, research in deterministic industrial networking, computing virtualization, and networked control/estimation for time-sensitive cyber-physical systems will open many potential avenues for novel applications, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI)-empowered digital twins, industrial robots, virtual and augmented reality in advanced manufacturing, and so forth. This Special Issue aims to provide a forum for the latest advances in industrial communications, computing and control co-design, and endeavors to promote research, innovations, and applications to bridge the gap between theory and applications. All papers for IEEE SECON 2024 must be submitted via the conference submission system. To ensure resilient network operation, new design and management techniques must be constantly devised to respond to the rapid network and service evolution. As a recent and relevant example, deployments of 5G and 6G communication networks require network infrastructures to support new ultra-reliable services with availability of up to 9 nines. Similarly, disaster resiliency in communication networks is now attracting the attention of media, governments, and industry as never before (consider, e.g., the worldwide network traffic deluge to support remote working during the recent COVID19-pandemic!). Furthermore, governments are not only investing to increase the coverage and capacity of their networks, but also the reliability and sovereignty of their networks so that they are more secure and robust against attacks and unstable markets. Fortunately, several new technical directions can be leveraged to improve network resilience, including increased network adaptability enabled by network softwarization (e.g., Software Defined Networking (SDN)); integration/convergence of multiple technologies (optical, wireless, satellite, datacenter networks); enhanced forms of data/service replication that is supported by edge computing; network slicing used to carve highly-reliable logical partitions of network, computing and storage resources. These, and many other technological transformations can enable next-generation high-reliability networks. Given the strong interest in both industry and academia towards reliability of telecom networks and cloud-computing infrastructures, we organize this fifth IEEE Transactions on Network and Service Management (TNSM) Special Issue on Resilient Communication Networks for an Hyper-Connected World (the first issue published in September 2021). This Special Issue aims at the timely publication of recent and innovative research results on this important topic. This Special Issue is organized in collaboration with the organizers of the International Conference on the Design of Reliable Communication Networks (DRCN), a well-established forum for scientists from both industry and academy who have interest in reliability and resilience of communication networks.
