But often, while deploying security mechanisms, the performance of the system is affected in adverse ways. A key challenge in the design of computer and telecommunication systems is to identify a neutral ground between security and performance. Whilst the widespread of devices spanning into networks and generating countless amounts of data absolutely require high performance systems. This makes us to rethink our security systems that can guarantee a high level of performance and also an acceptable level of security. In this respect, we invite researchers and security enthusiasts to submit papers that study and analyze various issues but not limited to such as tradeoff between security and performance, new security protocols in secure communication systems. Edge Computing and Edge-enabled AI for Network Management Chairs: Paolo Bellavista, Luca Foschini, Carlo Giannelli Edge computing is rapidly emerging as the most relevant architectural approach to manage some hard and open technical challenges associated with wide-scale and quality-sensitive Internet of Things (IoT) applications, which typically exploit the elastic availability of cloud resources on the server side. EAINM specifically focuses on network quality configuration, optimization, configuration, control, and management enabled by edge computing in three-layer deployment environments (device, edge, cloud). In particular, EAINM considers as central all methodological, design, implementation, and deployment experiences that investigate digital twin creation at the cloud layer and distributed enforcement of twin control actions also at the edge, typically with complex machine learning processing at the cloud side and more lightweight digital twin execution and refinement at edge nodes. Contributions about enabling AI techniques for these architectures and practical application prototyping/deployment experiences (e.g., for manufacturing production quality control and optimized management of distributed caching) are strongly welcome. Aspects and trends of software evaluation Chairs: George Tsihrintzis, Maria Virvou Software applications are evolving rapidly and are expanding their use to all the areas of human activity by the means of all sorts of hardware, including computers, handheld devices, smart things, digital signage etc. The vast use of software in many contexts imposes the need for the development of new evaluation methodologies, frameworks and processes to address software quality characteristics that include reliability, reusability, effectiveness, correctness, accuracy and also security and privacy that conform to new law regulations. Moreover, the important software quality characteristics of usability, user friendliness and utility have to be ensured for end users of a vast range of disciplines and backgrounds. Thus, measuring and evaluating the quality of software applications has become of critical importance and should attract a lot of research energy. The aim of ASE is to address current aspects and trends of software evaluation. Modeling and Evaluation of Wireless Body Area Networks Chair: Yahya Osais Wireless Body Area Not (WBAN) are networks of medical sensors which are attached or implanted into the body of a human being or animal to monitor and control biological processes. Their performance is limited by their constrained resources and side effects such as heat. Before the full potential of WBANs can be realized, many fundamental issues must be studied using performance evaluation tools and measurements. The aim of MEWBAN is to provide the necessary insights to make the needed progress. Smart and wearable mobile devices act as alternative gateways for participation in social networks and introduced “mobility” as a new aspect of social networking and applications. The aim of SANet is to provide a forum where researchers from the fields of Social Network Analysis and Telecommunication Systems Performance will come together, exchange ideas and generate new collaborations that bring us a step closer to Socially-Aware Networking. Securing a Smart Industrial Environment is a great challenge as there are many actors, complex systems, and interplays between them. One of the key issues in a Smart Industrial Environments is to ensure users’ information security and privacy as well as security of systems that it consists of. Therefore effective technical and policy measures shall be derived to deal with the potential threats. The Smart Industrial Environments shall establish and perfect various cyber-physical system security technology mechanisms, such as the establishment of remote disaster recovery and backup, physical access control, cyber-physical system emergency response in distributed heterogeneous environments, cyber-physical system security monitoring and situational awareness as well as other mechanisms. Cooperative collision avoidance aims at protecting VRUs by assuming that they are able to communicate their position with nearby cars by using mobile devices. In this approach, vehicles and VRUs exchange information, like their respective movement vectors for detecting whether a collision is possible or not. Mobile devices offer a wide range of sensors, which enable the recognition of specific contexts of VRUs, like for example whether a pedestrian runs towards an intersection or crosses a curb. Those contexts indicate unsafe VRU movements and can be used to improve collision avoidance in terms of collision detection performance, position accuracy, energy efficiency and more. At the same time, the edge of the Internet is increasingly empowered with new capabilities, like pervasive sensing and computing power, which opens the way to new domains, services and business models beyond traditional mobile Internet, such as connected cars, participatory and urban sensing, industrial IoT. As a consequence, new types of information have to be delivered by the network with varying requirements in terms of reliability, transmission rates and latency. To cope with the exponential growth of devices and mobile data traffic, there is a need for clean-slate or evolutionary Internet architectures merging and assembling different network technologies, supporting new paradigms for wired/wireless system planning and optimization, efficient transport over heterogeneous wireless access options, efficient and quality-aware content distribution, and new approaches for unified operations and management of the heterogeneous components, like software-defined systems and network function virtualization. These are only some examples of the challenges that are of interest to IFIP WWIC 2019. The IFIP WWIC 2019 conference takes a broader view to the merge of wired and wireless technologies and welcomes submissions from academia and industry that explore challenges and advances in architectures, algorithms, protocols, and technologies for a global wired/wireless Internet network. Papers that present original work, validated by experimentation, simulation, or analysis, are solicited. We also encourage work-in-progress and position papers that describe highly original ideas, present new directions, or have the potential to generate insightful provocative discussions. IFIP WWIC is a single-track conference which has reached, over the last 15 years, a high-quality level, which is reflected by the paper acceptance rate as well as the level of attendance. Following the conference tradition, there will be a best paper award. These systems operate under continuous perturbations making manual adjustments infeasible. For a collective system to be resilient, its *adaptation* must also be collective, in the sense that multiple entities must adapt in a way that addresses critical runtime conditions while preserving the benefits of collaborative interdependencies. Decision-making in such systems is distributed and possibly highly dispersed, and interaction between the entities may lead to the emergence of unexpected phenomena. In such systems, a new approach for adaptation is needed to allow: (i) multiple entities to collectively adapt with; (ii) negotiations to decide which collective changes are best. Collective adaptation also raises a second important challenge: Which parts of the system (things, services, people) should be engaged in an adaptation? This is nontrivial, as multiple solutions to the same problem may be generated at different levels. The challenge is to understand these levels and create mechanisms to decide the right scope for an adaptation for a given problem. This workshop solicits papers that address new methodologies, theories and principles that can be used to develop a better understanding of the fundamental factors underpinning the operation of such systems, so that they can be better designed, built, and analyzed, as well as case studies and applications showing such approaches in action. Interdisciplinary work is particularly welcomed. The topic owes its attractiveness to many examples in insects, animals and humans, where self-awareness is attributed to facilitate highly resilient and outstandingly efficient behaviors. IEEE provides corresponding formatting templates at IEEE conference template. Make sure to use the conference mode of the template, i.e., LaTeX users must use the conference option of the IEEEtran document class. Papers must be submitted electronically as a single PDF file on US Letter size paper (not A4), with all fonts embedded (the PDF-A standard complies with that). The presentations will provide authors with early feedback on their research work and enable them to exchange ideas with DCOSS participants. Besides presentations in the respective poster and demo sessions, DCOSS will host a dedicated session where poster and demo authors will give a two-minutes oral presentation of their work, during the main conference program. Also, a best poster/demo award will be announced. Posters and demos should present recent original results or ongoing research in all aspects of sensor networks, including algorithms, protocols, systems and applications. All submissions will be reviewed and judged based on originality, technical contribution and, particularly, potential to generate interesting and interactive exchanges of ideas. Accepted posters/demos must be presented at the Conference and at least one author for each poster/demo must be registered for the conference. However, despite the research advancements in recent years, many open issues still prevent the full realization of such vision. To meet the requirements of PSSs, telecommunication systems should deliver significantly high data rates, traffic capacity, connection density, energy efficiency, as well as small latencies. Being massively distributed into the environment, smart things may generate, collect, exchange and process big data, provide distributed services, offer computational resources, and cooperate to perform some tasks locally, as well as to delegate their execution to more powerful nodes in the cloud or at the network edge. In addition to the traditional pull-based data delivery, push-based and publish/subscribe traffic patterns must be supported. To accommodate newly emerging services, the network infrastructure should be agile, cost effective and possibly softwarized. Finally, meeting security and privacy requirements will play a fundamental role in the PSSs; indeed, without effective mechanisms, attacks and malfunctions in the IoT will outweigh any of their benefits. The PERSIST-IoT workshop aims to solicit a collection of innovative papers reporting the most recent advancements in the fields of smart network architecture, protocols and practical implementations enabling IoT for smart systems applications. The major commercial potential of mmWave networks has led to mmWave being considered as a key element of 5G-and-beyond mobile cellular networks, as well as for emerging Gbps-speed Wi-Fi networks based on the IEEE 802.11ad and draft IEEE 802.11ay standards. Despite this intense interest in mmWave from both the research community and industry, much fundamental research is still needed, especially at the networking layers. Compared to traditional wireless communication systems, the special propagation features and hardware constraints of mmWave systems introduce many new challenges in the design of efficient and robust medium access control (MAC), routing, and transport protocols. Communication at such high frequencies suffers from high attenuation and signal absorption as well as high penetration loss, requiring the use of highly directional antennas. This move from conventional omnidirectional networks to directional, blockage-prone mmWave connectivity marks a true paradigm shift for mmWave networking, affecting the design of all aspects of network control and resource management. The extremely high data rates achievable at mmWave come at the price of high coordination overhead. This in turn requires a radical rethinking of the design of all aspects of network coordination and resource management, including cell-discovery and initial access, mobility management, routing, coordination, scheduling, user association, resource allocation, and network planning. Presently, there is arguably an adequate understanding of physical layer issues. By contrast, the upper layers of the protocol stack are still largely unexplored in the context of efficient and robust mmWave networking. The severe channel attenuation, vulnerability to blockage by mobile and environmental obstacles, inherent directionality of mmWave links, the reduced interference footprint, complicated channel establishment and mobility management, and high signaling overhead of mmWave networks demand a thorough reconsideration of traditional protocols and design principles at the MAC as well as the higher layers. This special issue seeks new ideas to address networking challenges of future mmWave networks. The purpose is not only to serve as a collection of recent developments of mmWave communications, but also to inspire readers/researchers to contribute in this exciting and promising field.
