We aim to gather the principal practitioners and their experiences under one roof to discuss their findings, incite collaboration and move the state of the art forward. We plan to position this forum as the premier venue for presenting and discussing work in progress in how to develop and maintain pervasive computing solutions in Smart Health domain. Smart healthcare emerges as a novel technology that aims to provide round-the-clock monitoring of several vital signs of patients using various health sensors, specialized communication protocols, and intelligent context-aware applications. Smart healthcare applications proactively contact the caregiver provided any abnormality arises in the health condition of a monitored patient. It has been a boon to the patients suffering from different diseases and requiring continuous monitoring and care, such as, disabled individuals, assisted living, children of different ages, and adults who are susceptible to near-fatal falls or sudden increases in blood pressure, heart rates, stress level, etc. Since, there are heterogeneous devices and communication technologies introduced by different companies, major issues that need to be addressed are (1) A unified platform to facilitate coordination between the large-scale device distributions, (2) plug-and-play type inclusion of newer health sensors and replacing old ones without destabilizing the system, (3) Securing personal health records collected over multiple devices, and finally (4) collecting, managing, storing and making decisions over several critical healthcare events composing various real-time data traces. Those advancements encompass not only hardware and software, but also data integration and embrace a collection of techniques that use data analysis, manipulation, and distribution to achieve higher efficiency, effectiveness, reliability, and security within the industrial and pervasive internet. The essence of this vision is the creation of data-driven networks saturated with pervasive sensing, computing, and wireless communication that ideally support the needs of individuals, societies and industries. The existence of large volumes of data in the industrial and pervasive internet has already found its way into many current commercial systems due to the tremendous advances in a broad spectrum of technologies including industrial internet of things, pervasive computing and communications, and industrial cyber-physical systems. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers working at the intersection of wireless networking, mobile computing, sensing, robotics, and/or planning to address a myriad of fundamental technical challenges that must be solved before UAV swarms and, more broadly, multi-UAV systems can be safely, effectively, and widely deployed. To accommodate newly emerging services, the network infrastructure should be agile, cost effective and possibly softwarized. Finally, meeting security and privacy requirements will play a fundamental role in the PSSs; indeed, without effective mechanisms, attacks and malfunctions in the IoT will outweigh any of their benefits. The PERSIST-IoT workshop aims to solicit a collection of innovative papers reporting the most recent advancements in the fields of smart network architecture, protocols and practical implementations enabling IoT for smart systems applications. The major commercial potential of mmWave networks has led to mmWave being considered as a key element of 5G-and-beyond mobile cellular networks, as well as for emerging Gbps-speed Wi-Fi networks based on the IEEE 802.11ad and draft IEEE 802.11ay standards. Despite this intense interest in mmWave from both the research community and industry, much fundamental research is still needed, especially at the networking layers. Compared to traditional wireless communication systems, the special propagation features and hardware constraints of mmWave systems introduce many new challenges in the design of efficient and robust medium access control (MAC), routing, and transport protocols. Communication at such high frequencies suffers from high attenuation and signal absorption as well as high penetration loss, requiring the use of highly directional antennas. This move from conventional omnidirectional networks to directional, blockage-prone mmWave connectivity marks a true paradigm shift for mmWave networking, affecting the design of all aspects of network control and resource management. The extremely high data rates achievable at mmWave come at the price of high coordination overhead. This in turn requires a radical rethinking of the design of all aspects of network coordination and resource management, including cell-discovery and initial access, mobility management, routing, coordination, scheduling, user association, resource allocation, and network planning. Presently, there is arguably an adequate understanding of physical layer issues. By contrast, the upper layers of the protocol stack are still largely unexplored in the context of efficient and robust mmWave networking. The severe channel attenuation, vulnerability to blockage by mobile and environmental obstacles, inherent directionality of mmWave links, the reduced interference footprint, complicated channel establishment and mobility management, and high signaling overhead of mmWave networks demand a thorough reconsideration of traditional protocols and design principles at the MAC as well as the higher layers. This special issue seeks new ideas to address networking challenges of future mmWave networks. The purpose is not only to serve as a collection of recent developments of mmWave communications, but also to inspire readers/researchers to contribute in this exciting and promising field. According to the American Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, the majority of the victims in many different scenarios are untrained rescuers and even professional first responders. Accurate information gathered from sensors may allow first-responders and volunteers to make better and faster decisions, understand the situation, identify the rescue actions with higher success probability, correctly allocate resources such as number of ambulances, and prevent or mitigate personal risks. Today, even commonly available technologies, such as cellular phones, could save many lives if properly adopted. There is a compelling need of exploring the feasibility of new technologies, explicitly designed for working in emergency scenarios. Recently in this wide context, the aerial communication has significantly progressed due to longer battery life-time, new international law regulations and microelectronics evolution with lower prices and higher performance. In particular, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) can easily and quickly reach far-away locations, scan carefully the area looking for injured people and autonomously create a communication bridge between first responder networks and victims. However, there are several unaddressed challenges on both communication and computational means that might further improve the reactiveness and efficiency of the first response after a natural disaster or human-driven threat. The workshop is focused on main upcoming activities about the involvement of UAVs as emergency communication means during emergency situations. It is open to both scientific and industrial communities, and will disclose the latest research achievements in the research field of fine-grained localization, advanced communication between moving objects and optimal UAV-cell coverage. The main motivation is to gather people involved in public safety innovative actions, encompassing both the mathematical frameworks and realistic solutions to bring intelligence and efficiency on board of UAVs. Because, the disaster management organizations such as fire brigades, rescue teams, and emergency medical service providers have high priority and broadband demand to exchange information among team and with the victims by using mission-critical voice and data communication. To fulfill these demands, a standalone architecture is desired that can enable communication during the disaster situations. Moreover, broadband in public safety gives law enforcement the advantage to access information, stream video, and collaborate in real time. Law enforcement and border control remains the largest application of public safety LTE. To develop the standalone architecture and technologies, currently many organizations are developing LTE-based disaster support architecture because of its capability to provide the bandwidth efficient solutions. Technologies used in existing narrowband critical communications networks such as Terrestrial Trunked Radio (TETRA) and Project25 (P25) have been in use for about 20 years now. These networks are well developed and effective in supporting only voice applications but are not suitable for future higher bandwidth applications with the requirements of high data/video transmissions. Thus, the MC services are expected to evolve into the future by taking inputs from critical communications industries regarding architecture, technologies, and service requirements. Since, in disaster situation there is a possibility of complete architectural disaster, so to enable voice/data communication in this situation, the unmanned air vehicle (UAV)/robots can be used to provide the communication setup by enabling the path towards the core network. Moreover, Device-to-Device (D2D), Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communications are the key drivers in the emergency situation for exchanging information from the MC site in the absence of network infrastructure to provide MC voice and data services. To provide these services 3GPP included the Mission-critical push-to-talk (MCPTT) functionality into LTE standard which is the first major step in a series of MC Services and functionalities demanded by the market. Recently, 3GPP Release 14 added various enhancements to its repertoire related to MCPTT, MC Data, and MC Video. Hence, the Release 14 MC services not only required new protocols and security enhancements but also enhancements in existing MCPTT services to enable reuse of common functionalities. Similarly, the Release 15, that will be the first phase of 5G, is expecting more enhancements in MC services. The main objective of this special section is to bring most recent advances in physical layer of mission critical communication technologies. Moreover, its goal is to address the challenges related to mission critical services. Authors are required to submit previously unpublished papers in this special issue. At the moment, four of the most important challenges are: - Architectures, protocols and algorithms for an efficient interconnection of smart objects, both between themselves and with the (future) Internet within the 5G context. - The creation of value-added services in cross-domain applications, especially open and interoperable, enabled by the interconnection of things / machines / smart objects, in such a way that they can be integrated with current and new business and development processes. - The support of a virtualized IoT based on the concepts of virtualized components and functions within dense and heterogeneous environments. - Security, privacy and trust in the IoT applications, for ensuring that the provided services will protect the users™ data, provide guarantees that no malicious users/devices will affect the system decisions and that the IoT applications will be secure and privacy-preserving by design. We cite as example of CPS smart grid in energy sector, smart factory and industry 4.0, intelligent transportation systems, healthcare and medical systems, and robotic systems. The CPSs offer very complex interaction between heterogeneous cyber and physical components; additionally to this complexity they are exposed to important disturbances due to unintentional and intentional events which lead the prediction of their behaviors (categorized as "Normal" or "Faulty") a very difficult task. Meanwhile, cyber security for CPS is attracting the attention of research scientists in both industry and academia since the number of cyber-attacks have increased and their behaviors have become more sophisticated commonly known as zero-day threats. Conventional cyber security mechanisms, such Intrusion Detection and Prevention Systems (IDS/IPS), and access control have not the capability to detect, prevent and block this category of cyber-attacks since the zero-day threats exhibit an unknown misbehavior that are not defined in signatures’ database of the security systems. Recently, a new era of cyber security mechanisms based on Artificial Intelligent (AI) are under development to protect the CPSs from these zero-day attacks. In the context of cyber security, the machine learning technologies are used to manage a huge amount of heterogeneous data that come from different sources of information with a goal of generating automatically different attacks patents and hence predict accurately the future attackers’ misbehavior. Meanwhile, game-theoretic approaches have been used in the context of cyber defense to solve the decision-making issues (i.e., the suspect device is an attacker or not) and attacks prediction. In decision-making issue, the cyber security game is used to study the interaction between the security agents (e.g., IDS and IPS) and their opponents (e.g. attackers) with a goal to determine the optimal decision making of security agent to classify the suspected opponent as attacker or not. Preventing the occurrence of zero-day attacks requires the collaboration between different AI systems including machine learning and game theory, as well as security expert intervention. In fact, the involving of human intervention in the decision-making leads an improvement of attacks detection since the purpose of human-machine interaction is to reduce the number of false positives. Another example to illustrate the migration of security solutions to use more intelligent principles and technologies, the Identity Management & Access control (IAM) which switch from a simple login/password checking to voice and facial recognition. This Special Issue (SI) aims to bring together researchers from academic and industrial to share their visions of the AI application in cyber security context, present challenges and recent works and advances related to AI-based cyber security applied to CPSs. Continuous connectivity empowers these devices to socialize with each other by sharing information from distinct sources. IoT has played a profound role in diverse domains of life ranging from healthcare to agriculture, education to enterprise and transportation to engineering and many more. A progressive embracement of IoT by industry and individuals has enabled the realization of concepts such as Smart Cities and Smart Industries that were considered a mere dream decade ago. Further, mobility in IoT brings a lot of challenges when it comes to providing generic frameworks, protocols, applications and services such as uncertainty, dynamicity, disruptions, scalability and reliability etc. Highly mobile objects have tendency to change their context at a rapid pace that brings the challenge of realizing the applications that require contextual information for their operations and functionality. Generating context information requires extensive data analysis, high energy consumption, intelligent sensing and large storages to ensure appropriate information dissemination entities involved in the system. Context-aware mobility has gained tremendous attention with the advent of new generation of portal devices, e.g., smart phones, smart watches, tablets, fitness bands and smart cars etc. Change in the context can significantly transform the overall outcome of the system based on the devices, users, applications and environmental parameters. Recent advancements in IoT are still in their fancy and require standardization, benchmarking, architectural designs, models, guidelines, policies and measurement criteria for development and deployment of context-aware applications and services. This special issue is expected to provide a platform for academics and industry researchers to identify and debate enabling technologies, technical and non-technical challenges and recent accomplishments associated with contextaware mobility in IoT.
