Several switch/router vendors are “opening” their hardware, offering APIs to allow a “software defined” control of the networking operations. The vitality of the SDN approach is witnessed by the release of several SDN tools and development environments, most of which are open sourced. *OpenFlow* The OpenFlow specifications, now standardized by the Open Networking Foundation, can represent a key component in a SDN architecture, but the SDN scope and concept is much wider than the OpenFlow APIs. In particular there is the need of higher level SDN abstractions and higher level SDN APIs, as the ones that should be offered to applications (e.g. SDN “north-bound” interfaces). *European* What makes an SDN workshop “European”? Traditional strengths of European research and development have been in optical transmission and wireless, especially cellular networks. The workshop emphasizes aspects of Software Defined Networks that come up when extending SDN 'beyond Ethernet'. In this regard, “European” does not mean that we restrict to a geographic scope, we welcome contribution and participation from all over the world. *Motivation* One goal of the workshop is to bring together industry and academia on the topics of SDN, in particular the workshop will feature an “industry forum”, i.e. a session with presentations of key industrial players (manufacturers, telecom operators…). A special session will include presentation and discussion of the highest ranked proposals to the 2nd open call of the OFELIA project (http://www.fp7-ofelia.eu/open-calls/2nd-open-call/). *Contributions to the workshop* We are interested in both papers showing consolidated results and in position papers bringing up innovative ideas. High user mobility and dynamic management policies that ensure end-to-end reliable and secure support of new services are key towards the adoption of the enabling technologies. In wireless networks, the medium alone creates additional challenges for efficiently providing QoS, due to its broadcast nature and uncertainty. Meanwhile, the proliferation of new services in the mobile market is driving the QoS requirements higher (in terms of performance indicators such as throughput, delay, jitter, error rate, network coverage etc). Thus, an important challenge in future wireless communications is how to design and run a cost efficient network in order to optimize the key performance indicators that will support the user requirements. Resource management and planning are sets of key mechanisms that enable the efficient and effective operation of wireless networks, aiming to minimize the impact of interference and maximize the overall network performance. For next generation networks, where multiple heterogeneous networks (both in terms of network elements and in term of access technologies) will co-exist in the same geographical area, these mechanisms will be of key importance not only for a single network operation but for the smooth network cooperation, the optimal use of wireless spectrum and the provision of high quality services to the users. Taking into account the requirements, applications, and users, the developed mechanisms should be optimized in terms of performance, scalability, robustness, flexibility and energy efficiency. The purpose of this session is to bring together researchers focusing on resource management and optimization within the context of heterogeneous wireless networking. These challenges stem from high delay, such as inter-planetary networks, limited power, such as sensor and wildlife monitoring networks, new communication environments, such as underwater networks, communication in settings that lack infrastructure, such as rural and remote areas, and military battlefields, or simply environments where it is difficult or expensive to use the existing infrastructure, social and vehicular networks. Essentially, challenged networks are found in everyday settings, when access to traditional infrastructure is non-existent, restricted, expensive, overly complex, or rapidly changing. While users strive to communicate in these challenged environments, traditional internet protocol architectures fail to provide effective support. Given the expectation of intermittent connectivity, heterogeneous mix of nodes, nodal churn, and widely varying network conditions, the goal of the challenged network engineer is to design and implement communication that expect and so operate effectively in this diverse range of conditions. Topics for the workshop include, but are not limited to: * Delay/disruption-tolerant networks (DTNs) * Architecture, design, implementation, and evaluation of communication systems for challenged networks * Case studies involving real challenged network solutions in various stages of development or use * Analysis and characterization of challenged networks and protocols * Applications in challenged networks (disaster relief and mobile social networking, vehicular networks) * Configuration, management, and monitoring of challenged networks * Security/Privacy concerns and solutions in challenged networks * Real-world mobility traces of challenged environments * Test and simulation tools for evaluating challenged network systems * Applications challenged networking techniques to communication in daily life Selected papers will be forward-looking, will describe their relationship to existing work, and will have impact and implications for ongoing or future research. We aim to accept approximately 12 papers, and to have a highly interactive workshop. In addition, demos have been an integral part of CHANTS, and we aim to accept up to ten demos. BEST PAPERS: Google will sponsor up to two best-paper awards to honor the author(s) of papers of exceptional quality submitted to the CHANTS 2012 workshop. Full paper submission guidelines All submitted papers will be carefully evaluated based on their originality, significance, technical soundness, and clarity of expression. Demo proposals submission guidelines Real-world data gathering and measurement are at the heart of large-scale human mobility data collection, processing, and modeling. In such dynamic environments, sensors should self-organize and reason in a distributed manner about resource allocation, scheduling, forwarding, caching, and in-network storage to accomplish specific missions, while extending the operational network lifetime. Another major challenge lies in accommodating human input. Humans are the ultimate sensors. They are well-equipped to monitor and report situations that would be very difficult for machine sensors to understand. They also come with their own challenges including imperfect reliability, bias, and relative lack of predictability (compared to well-calibrated sensors). The design of mission-oriented sensor networks, where humans and sensors collaborate, should account for trade-offs between several attributes such energy consumption (due to mobility, sensing, and communication), reliability, fault-tolerance, data collection latency, and quality of information (such as video resolution, picture quality, type of content, degree of redundancy, and level of summarization), and their impact on mission objectives. It should accommodate human-centric sensing modalities such as free-form text, pictures, sound, and video, and should include mechanisms to handle unpredictability, uncertainty, human error, and noise. ACM MiSeNet 2012 aims to provide a forum for participants from academia and industry to discuss topics in mission-oriented sensor network research and practice. ACM MiSeNet 2012 serves as incubator for scientific communities that share a particular research agenda in this area. ACM MiSeNet 2012 will provide them with opportunities to understand the major technical and application challenges as well as exchange and discuss scientific and engineering ideas related to architecture, protocols, algorithms, and application design, at a stage before they have matured to warrant conference/journal publications. This workshop intends to bring together researchers working in the broad area of experimental wireless networking. This workshop will serve as a forum to share new ideas/experiences in all experimental aspects of wireless networks and systems, and facilitate discussions of key unresolved challenges in this area. We are seeking original, previously unpublished papers addressing experimental wireless networking issues. All submissions will be judged by their technical merit and relevance to the workshop, based on a thorough review process by the Technical Program Committee. Apart from regular paper presentations, the workshop program will include an interactive session with demos and posters. We welcome demonstrations of novel wireless network testbed capabilities and measurement results. The posters may describe work in progress and offers an excellent opportunity for feedback and discussions on early research. Networked systems of such sensors are expected to be used in a variety of applications including habitat monitoring, precision agriculture, disaster recovery operations, healthcare and supply chain management. Real-world sensor network deployments are still scarce, yet prototypic implementations are getting more common, particularly with the advent of novel sensing platforms such as smartphones, which allow for extending dedicated sensor networks. Due to its very wide bandwidth, as well as low transmit power, UWB is a serious contender for a number of applications including remote monitoring of both vital signs (temperature, pulse oximetry, etc.) as well as other medically significant data, such as ECG and EMG. The wide bandwidth of UWB signals also makes high-resolution ranging and localization possible, particularly in indoor areas, thereby enabling indoor tracking solutions for disabled patients and children in hospitals. UWB also holds promise for medical implant applications, such as capsule endoscopy, and may even be an enabler of next-generation micro-robotic surgery applications. The first of these applications would benefit from the very high bandwidth of UWB signals in transmission of very high resolution images and video of human body organs, and the second would benefit from the high ranging and localization accuracy provided by UWB signaling. The primary goal of this workshop is to explore the state of the art in the development of UWB technology for body area networking, ranging from fundamental physical layer concepts, such as channel modeling and system architecture, to development of prototypes and clinical trials. Opportunistic communication paradigm heavily benefits from the heterogeneous networking and communication infrastructure that currently exist, e.g., mobile networks, P2P networks, with the supporting technologies in data management and system interoperability. Motivated by further examining recent advances in this field and promoting the optimization of the existing methodologies and/or approaches, as well as presenting efficient high performance techniques for extending the survivability of such systems, both in terms of performance and reliability, we are interested in organizing this workshop with the following primary objectives: § Explore new and innovative ideas and improvements of opportunistic networks that can affect the overall performance of the system; § Explore the impact of wireless mobility and resource management in order to offer high performance and resource availability in today’s computing systems. Jahrestagung der Gesellschaft für Informatik 16.9. - 21.9.2012 TU Braunschweig www.informatik2012.de <http://www.informatik2012.de> =========================================================== MOTIVATION UND ZIELSETZUNG =========================================================== Die Energiewende mit dem zunehmenden Umstieg von den klassischen Energieträgern Kohle, Öl, Gas und Nuklearbrennstoff auf erneuerbare Energien wie Windkraft, Solarenergie, Wasserkraft, Biomasse und Wasserstoff mit z.T. stark volatiler Charakteristik stellt grundsätzlich neue Heraus- forderungen an Technik und Management von elektrischen Energienetzen, d.h. an eine intelligente Steuerung der Einspeisung, Verteilung und Nutzung elektrischer Energie einschließlich aller damit verbundenen betrieblichen, ökonomischen und rechtlichen Aspekte. Zur Gestaltung dieses sog. "Smart Grid" ist das interdisziplinäre Zusammenwirken von Energietechnik, Informationstechnik, Informatik, Betriebswirtschaft und Recht erforderlich. Die gegenwärtig vorherrschenden Energiequellen sind durch die Nutzung von fossilen und nuklearen Brennstoffen gekennzeichnet, welche nicht nachhaltig zur Verfügung stehen, zum "CO2-Footprint" klimaschädlich beitragen bzw. durch die ungelösten Aufgaben zur Entsorgung von langlebigen Abfallprodukten gesellschaftlich nicht mehr akzeptabel sind. Sie hatten den Vorteil, dass die Standorte der Erzeugung und des Verbrauchs ohne überlange Transportwege aneinander angepasst, eine stetige Grundlast bereitgestellt und Spitzenlasten durch Gas-, Öl- und Pumpspeicher- Kraftwerke bedarfsgerecht abgedeckt werden konnten. Dem gegenüber erfordern die zeitlich stark schwankend zur Verfügung stehenden Energieträger wie Sonne und Wind eine flexible Anpassung des Verbrauchs sowie Energiespeichertechniken, welche heutzutage technisch nur unbefriedigend und auch nicht im erforderlichen Umfang vorhanden sind. Hieraus resultieren die Anforderungen an die Energienetze der Zukunft, welche weit über die heute angewandten Verfahren hinausgehen und die Bereitstellung, den Transport und die Nutzung der Energie in einem intelligent gesteuerten Netz, dem sog. "Smart Grid", miteinander verbinden. Networks that are designed with change in mind will be more robust to disruption caused by growing demands and changing user patterns and yet-unimagined applications. The risks associated with investment in these kinds of networks will be lower as they will be more durable and scalable. Networks that are designed with change in mind will make effective use of resources (e.g. spectrum, bandwidth, power, processing capabilities, cooling capabilities etc.) and ensure a sustainable future. The objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers and technologists from academia and industry to explore the applications of artificial intelligence to the most pertinent technical challenges in telecommunications and sensor networks. FORMAT Workshop participation will be by invitation only. If you would like to participate, submit either a full paper of no more than 6 pages (or 6,000 words); a position statement, short paper, or problem instance (at most 3 pages or 3,000 words); or a position statement (1 page). Short papers may address an important problem for further research or describe a practical problem or an interesting lesson learned. In addition, we solicit proposals for short demonstrations (at most 3 pages with demonstrations taking at most 15 minutes). MIMO is supported by various international standards such as long term evolution (LTE), WiMAX and International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT)-Advanced. Due to the limited size of hand-held mobile stations (MSs), however, no more than two antennas can usually be fit per MS. As a result, implementing conventional MIMO with MSs in practice becomes challenging. On the other hand, multiple single-antenna MSs can be grouped to create a virtual MIMO (VMIMO) system. The system performance can be greatly enhanced by VMIMO because the size of the MIMO channel increases significantly, resulting in more degrees of freedom and improved spatial diversity gain. Moreover, interesting research areas and various challenges arise in VMIMO systems to solve problems that do not appear in MIMO systems. For example, given a large number of MSs and limited processing capability of base stations, a proper subset of the MSs must be chosen to form the VMIMO system; this is also known as user grouping. One of the considerations when carrying out user grouping is fairness. Moreover, in existing cellular systems, information exchange between MSs is difficult. To manage spatial interference at each MS, powerful precoding techniques are needed at base stations, which are crucial to the performance of VMIMO. On the other hand, considering wireless ad-hoc networks and future cellular systems, collaboration among MSs could be possible. As such, it is also interesting to investigate VMIMO with cooperating terminals and security issues arising as a consequence of cooperation. Therefore, VMIMO is a pressing research topic that has a wide range of applications in wireless communication systems, including both cellular and wireless ad hoc networks. It is timely and important to develop enabling techniques for VMIMO. The goal of this issue is to bring together the most updated research contributions in this area and contribute in identifying issues that need to be addressed when analyzing and designing VMIMO systems. Moreover, with active deployment of multi-core and many-core architecture, virtualization and the emerging cloud comp! uting infrastructure, power and QoS constraints raise more challenges and have negative impacts on system performance. Hence, various aspects of power and QoS aware related solutions, such as algorithms design, performance evaluation and analysis, and prototypical implementation are required to make the computing system more power efficient with little loss of QoS performance. This workshop focuses on the challenges imposed by power and QoS constraints on computing systems, and on the different state-of-the-art solutions proposed to overcome these challenges. 2012 International Workshop on Power and QoS Aware Computing (PQoSCom2012) is a forum for professionals involved in energy efficiency and QoS constraints in parallel and distributed computing systems and data center operations and management. The goal of this workshop is to bridge the gap between theory and practice in the field of power aware and QoS constrained computing and bring together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry. A major challenge in the design of mission-oriented sensor networks arises in supporting dynamic topology and disruption-tolerant architecture, caused by mobility, which has significant impact on performance in terms of sensing coverage, network connectivity, and information quality. In such dynamic environments, sensors should self-organize and reason in a distributed manner about resource allocation, scheduling, forwarding, caching, and in-network storage to accomplish specific missions, while extending the operational network lifetime. Another major challenge lies in accommodating human input. Humans are the ultimate sensors. They are well-equipped to monitor and report situations that would be very difficult for machine sensors to understand. They also come with their own challenges including imperfect reliability, bias, and relative lack of predictability (compared to well-calibrated sensors). The design of mission-oriented sensor networks, where humans and sensors collaborate, should account for trade-offs between several attributes such energy consumption (due to mobility, sensing, and communication), reliability, fault-tolerance, data collection latency, and quality of information (such as video resolution, picture quality, type of content, degree of redundancy, and level of summarization), and their impact on mission objectives. It should accommodate human-centric sensing modalities such as free-form text, pictures, sound, and video, and should include mechanisms to handle unpredictability, uncertainty, human error, and noise. ACM MiSeNet 2012 aims to provide a forum for participants from academia and industry to discuss topics in mission-oriented sensor network research and practice. ACM MiSeNet 2012 serves as incubator for scientific communities that share a particular research agenda in this area. ACM MiSeNet 2012 will provide them with opportunities to understand the major technical and application challenges as well as exchange and discuss scientific and engineering ideas related to architecture, protocols, algorithms, and application design, at a stage before they have matured to warrant conference/journal publications. ACM MiSeNet 2012 seeks papers that present novel theoretical and practical ideas as well as work in-progress, which will lead to the development of solid foundations for the design, analysis, and implementation of energy-efficient, reliable, and secure mission-oriented networked sensing applications. The Wireless Sensor Networks track at the 33rd IEEE Real-Time Systems Symposium (RTSS) aims at fostering the interaction and collaboration of researchers and exchanging new ideas in various aspects of sensor network research. The technical program of this track will consist of selected regular papers. At the same time, several new networking and radio technologies (e.g., dynamic spectrum access, UWB) are emerging to address the performance limitations of existing technologies and make wireless networking more ubiquitous. Realistic evaluation of such a diverse set of technologies and their mutual interactions will play a major role in identifying the key performance bottlenecks, thus shaping future advances in wireless technology. The importance of testbed-based evaluation of wireless network protocols/applications as well as characterization of real-world aspects using traces from operational networks is gaining wider recognition in the mobile and wireless networking research community. This workshop intends to bring together researchers working in the broad area of experiment! al wireless networking. This workshop will serve as a forum to share new ideas/experiences in all experimental aspects of wireless networks and systems, and facilitate discussions of key unresolved challenges in this area. We are seeking original, previously unpublished papers addressing experimental wireless networking issues. All submissions will be judged by their technical merit and relevance to the workshop, based on a thorough review process by the Technical Program Committee. Apart from regular paper presentations, the workshop program will include an interactive session with demos and posters. We welcome demonstrations of novel wireless network testbed capabilities and measurement results. The posters may describe work in progress and offers an excellent opportunity for feedback and discussions on early research. Deployment of 4G networks and releases of new smart phones and tablets will undoubtedly raise the demand for better signal coverage, faster transmission, and seamless adaptation. One emerging research direction is wireless access virtualization, in which a group of access points collaboratively provide the illusion of a single wide-coverage access point to simplify connection management on the client side. While enjoying the benefits of accessing information at any time from anywhere, data transmitted over the wireless medium are more susceptible to eavesdropping and packet sniffing. This raises the concerns for data authentication and privacy issues. These technical challenges are aggravated by the proliferation of various cloud services, social networking platforms, and smart connected vehicles. The understanding of these issues becomes even more demanding due to non-uniform spectrum allocation, various radio resource management policies, economic concerns, the scarcity of radio resources, the inherent transmission impairments of wireless links and user mobility. The aim of the Fourth IEEE International Workshop on Mobile Computing and Networking Technologies (WMCNT 2012) is to provide an international venue for the discussion of architecture, design, implementation, analysis, measurement, performance and simulation in wireless, mobile and ubiquitous computing environments. WMCNT 2012 will serve as an open forum, where novel ideas will be exchanged via bringing together researchers, developers and engineers in both academia and industry. All papers will be peer reviewed by experts in the field and accepted papers will be presented in oral sessions and published in the conference proceedings, included in IEEE Xplore (approved). The submission process is carried through the EDAS conference management system (http://edas.info/). The manuscripts must follow the IEEE format. The maximum paper length is of eight (8) pages including tables and figures. Submission of a regular paper implies that at least one of the authors will have a full registration to the Conference and present the paper upon the acceptance of the submission. Authors of selected outstanding papers will be invited to submit extended versions of their work for possible inclusion into a special journal issue. A major challenge in the design of mission-oriented sensor networks arises in supporting dynamic topology and disruption-tolerant architecture, caused by mobility, which has significant impact on performance in terms of sensing coverage, network connectivity, and information quality. In such dynamic environments, sensors should self-organize and reason in a distributed manner about resource allocation, scheduling, forwarding, caching, and in-network storage to accomplish specific missions, while extending the operational network lifetime. Another major challenge lies in accommodating human input. Humans are the ultimate sensors. They are well-equipped to monitor and report situations that would be very difficult for machine sensors to understand. They also come with their own challenges including imperfect reliability, bias, and relative lack of predictability (compared to well-calibrated sensors). The design of mission-oriented sensor networks, where humans and sensors collaborate, should account for trade-offs between several attributes such energy consumption (due to mobility, sensing, and communication), reliability, fault-tolerance, data collection latency, and quality of information (such as video resolution, picture quality, type of content, degree of redundancy, and level of summarization), and their impact on mission objectives. It should accommodate human-centric sensing modalities such as free-form text, pictures, sound, and video, and should include mechanisms to handle unpredictability, uncertainty, human error, and noise. ACM MiSeNet 2012 aims to provide a forum for participants from academia and industry to discuss topics in mission-oriented sensor network research and practice. ACM MiSeNet 2012 serves as incubator for scientific communities that share a particular research agenda in this area. ACM MiSeNet 2012 will provide them with opportunities to understand the major technical and application challenges as well as exchange and discuss scientific and engineering ideas related to architecture, protocols, algorithms, and application design, at a stage before they have matured to warrant conference/journal publications. ACM MiSeNet 2012 seeks papers that present novel theoretical and practical ideas as well as work in-progress, which will lead to the development of solid foundations for the design, analysis, and implementation of energy-efficient, reliable, and secure mission-oriented networked sensing applications. As a result of the advancements of ubiquitous and increasingly powerful wearable devices, to support the wide variety of application contexts, there exists a growing number of health monitoring systems with sophisticated capabilities. Moreover, there is enormous public interest in products that allow individuals, ranging from children to elders, to monitor and improve their own health and lifestyle. The combination of BSN, with their huge amount of gathered sensor data and their limited processing power can be tackled by exploiting a Cloud computing infrastructure to offer an integrated platform that provides: (a) the ability to utilize heterogeneous sensors; (b) scalability of data storage; (c) scalability of processing power for different kinds of analysis; (d) global access to the processing and storage infrastructure; (e) easy sharing of results; and (f) pay-as-you-go pricing for using BSN services. The aim of this special issue is to provide a comprehensive guide on new ideas and results in the BSN domain. In particular, it will focus on the state of the art, architecture, and associated techniques for BSN-Cloud integration, allowing collection and dissemination of health data from BSN to a storage Cloud repository, and processing and analysis of the stored data using software services hosted in the Cloud. It will also identify potential research directions and technologies that will drive innovations within this domain. We expect the papers of the special issue to serve as a valuable reference for larger audience such as systems architects, practitioners, developers, researchers, academics and students.
