------------------------------------------------------------------------ - Our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this CFP - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Workshop on Models and Methods for Reliability and Performance of computer networks” (MMRP 2012) August 27 - 31, 2012, CNAM, Paris, France http://mmrp12.wp.it-sudparis.eu collocated with the 18th International Symposium on Formal Methods (FM 2012) Overview: Since the last years, we have seen a rapid development of computer networks and distributed software in various industrial sectors. It becomes more and more crucial to guarantee both performance and reliability of the systems. We need accurate models and efficient methods for quantitative analysis of these systems. The aim of this workshop is to study recent advances on probabilistic models and mathematical methods, in order to analyze these systems. Some specific problems are studied as the complexity and the size of the systems. Quantitative analysis could be very difficult to perform, so one objective of this workshop is to show how some new promising models and methods can solve these problems. Optimization methods provide also interesting solutions for example in network survivability. We plan to have one or two invited speakers from university and industry. We propose two kinds of papers: long and short papers. Long papers will be published in the proceedings. -Long papers: not exceeding 15 pages which describe research findings in the identified topics of the workshop. They should be in Springer LNCS format, and describe original work that has not been published elsewhere. Files must be submitted in PDF. -Short papers: 4 pages which describe work in progress also in the topics of the workshop, written in Springer LNCS format, these papers will not be published in the workshop proceedings. Files must be submitted in PDF. It mainly involves methods, algorithms and protocols that enable devices to autonomously selforganize in network structures and use those infrastructures to facilitate the exchange of information and delivery of services. These systems typically communicate via low-cost and energy efficient ambient wireless technologies so as to enable seamless interaction and service provisioning. The objective of this Special Issue is to capture recent developments and publish ongoing research activities in the area of pervasive computing systems. Human-Computer Confluence Research Challenges May 14-15, 2012, Vienna, Austria MOTIVATION HCI research over three decades has shaped a wide spanning research area at the boundaries of computer science and behavioral science, with an impressive outreach to how humankind is experiencing information and communication technologies in literally every breath of an individuals life. The explosive growth of networks and communications, and at the same time radical miniaturization of ICT electronics have reversed the principles of human computer interaction. Up until now considered as the interaction concerns when humans approach ICT systems, more recent observations see systems approaching humans at the same time. Humans and ICT Systems apparently approach each other confluently. Human Computer Confluence has been mentioned to become a research priority in "Horizon 2020" (2013-2020), the funding programme of the European Commission that follows after the 7th Framework Programme (FP7, 2007-2013). HC2 VISIONS is a research agenda solicitation action (FP7 FET Project HC2) which may or may not be influential to the FET work programme discussion on new directions in human computer confluence. The HC2 VISIONS workshop invites key experts to pose initial research challenge statements articulated by the scientific community in a crowd sourced solicitation attempt. The goals of the workshop are to shape research challenge statements indicating (i) vision, (ii) research approach and (iii) expected impact of prospective research issues by world leading experts in the field. HC2 VISIONS is accompanied by a web-based white-book initiative at www.pervasive.jku.at/hccvisions. As the preven- tion of additional cognitive workload in HCI is a topic of increasing importance, new forms or modalities of interaction between humans and interfaces need to be explored. One promising approach is to use subliminal stimulation or the injection of information below aware perception. To throw light on this issue, the workshop is centered on the questions how subliminal effects can be scientifically supported or how a certain claim could be empirically re- futed. Especially when intrusion detection and prevention techniques are considered, wired networks appear to be in a much better status than their wireless counterparts. Indeed, security concerns are, still, a significant impediment to widespread adoption of wireless network technologies. Because of the use of wireless communications technology, structure of the wireless networks, limited resources available on wireless devices, and open nature of wireless communications, employing an effective and efficient intrusion detection and prevention system for detecting and thwarting malicious attacks against wireless communication still remains a great challenge to researchers. On the other side, recent increase in the interest in anywhere, anytime, anybody’s network with the aid of wireless self-organizing networks has made the demand of effective intrusion detection and prevention techniques even more critical. We consider four types of wireless networks under wireless self-organizing networks (SON) category: Mobile Ad Hoc Network (MANET), Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), Wireless Mesh Network (WMN), and Vehicular Ad Hoc Network (VANET). The status quo of these networks lacks standardized mechanisms for intrusion detection and prevention. In particular for WSN, with limited resources of the involved tiny sensor nodes, employing such defensive and/or preventive mechanisms is, indeed, a tough challenge. If the system is distributed, the nodes may not be able to run the system; if centralized and controlled by the base station, the system may not serve the actual purpose of intrusion handling within the actual deployed network. We are interested, in this Special Issue, to put together the latest advancements in these related areas and to get the thoughts of the researchers, practitioners, and users of these technologies. The articles could be from the theory and/or practical perspectives. Extensive review articles on specific topics are most welcome. The articles are expected to touch up on any of the four types of SONs, namely MANET, WSN, WMN, and VANET. These nodes are deeply embedded into the physical surroundings, and gather and process information such as temperature, humidity, light characteristics, seismic activities or images and sound samples from the physical world. Networked systems of such sensors are expected to be used in a variety of applications including habitat monitoring, precision agriculture, disaster recovery operations, healthcare and supply chain management. Real-world sensor network deployments are still scarce, yet prototypic implementations are getting more common, particularly with the advent of novel sensing platforms such as smartphones, which allow for extending dedicated sensor networks. Experiences gained in such deployments are crucial for the sensor network research community. These results are needed to refine assumptions made when designing hardware, software, protocols and mechanisms for sensor networks. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from both academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. We expect the workshop to act as a forum for the sensor network research community to discuss open issues, novel solutions and the future development of wireless sensor networks in general. We encourage contributions describing innovative work in the realm of wireless sensor networks. Realistic evaluation of such a diverse set of technologies and their mutual interactions will play a major role in identifying the key performance bottlenecks, thus shaping future advances in wireless technology. The importance of testbed-based evaluation of wireless network protocols/applications as well as characterization of real-world aspects using traces from operational networks is gaining wider recognition in the mobile and wireless networking research community. This workshop intends to bring together researchers working in the broad area of experiment! al wireless networking. This workshop will serve as a forum to share new ideas/experiences in all experimental aspects of wireless networks and systems, and facilitate discussions of key unresolved challenges in this area. We are seeking original, previously unpublished papers addressing experimental wireless networking issues. All submissions will be judged by their technical merit and relevance to the workshop, based on a thorough review process by the Technical Program Committee. Internet data traffic continues to grow rapidly. The challenge that operators face, especially in the mobile Internet, is to support more subscribers with higher bandwidth demands. Therefore, operators need to seek for new technologies to efficiently utilize the available network resources, in particular, this concerns resource allocation and flow management. In wireless networks, the problem is particularly relevant due to the inherently limited resources, which render a simple "throwing bandwidth at the problem" solution impossible. The higher rate of optical technology in access networks introduces the potential for capacity sharing problems to move closer to the core, while passive optical networks move sharing problems closer to the end-user (more like cable and radio access networks). Data centers typically employ yet another type of network with different characteristics -- and different tools for capacity sharing. Addressing this topic correctly is not trivial as there are different interests to consider: operators naturally want to be able exercise control on how the network is used, avoid service disruptions and account for network usage. Users are interested to use different applications and expect a certain level of service quality, consistent experience etc. Many applications today are provided by so-called over-the-top (OTT) providers -- in conjunction with web-services, smart-phone applications etc. These applications and the corresponding platforms are important drivers for innovation and sources of revenue -- although there is controversy over whether enough revenue is directed into capacity growth. Still, application providers are interested in their application working with sufficient quality. In addition, there is regulation that can impose additional requirements in some markets, such as availability requirements, network neutrality etc. The objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers in the area of transport protocols, system designers of fixed and mobile access networks, and their applications to advance the state of research on capacity sharing. We solicit contributions on the state-of-the-art, results of ongoing research, open issues, trends and new ideas. In particular, both wireless sensors operating in relation with transportation systems are instrumental in the development of applications, including e.g., parking monitoring, real-time traffic information, routing, warning as well as decision-making aided transportation. The lesson learned constructing such applications is that transport systems are particularly exposed to environmental perturbations, unreliable wireless medium of communication, high mobility-driven instability. This poses extraordinary challenges to both the designers and the research community who attempt to provide sensor-enabled transportation systems as a first upon advanced urban, transport planning & smart cities. During this era, there has been a tremendous growth in this field with many new techniques and standards have been developed for the ease and safety of the passengers. Now, the passengers during travelling can take smart decisions by knowing the outside environment variables such as traffic conditions, density of the vehicles in a particular region, duration of traffic lights in a particular areas, etc. Moreover, these passengers can download and upload the heavy contents while travelling with the aid of the already deployed Road Side Unit (RSUs) which are connected to Internet to provide various services to the end users. Modern Vehicles equipped with sensor nodes monitor and collect the data in sparse and dense regions which can be processed for the benefit of community of peoples, e.g., health monitoring and diagnostic systems, safety alarms, intelligent transport systems, and environment monitoring. The vehicles during movement, equipped with sensor nodes, can also collect the data from human body and that data can be processed in collaboration with the other vehicles for various medical purposes. In this case, VANETs can also be used in Body Sensor Networks (BSNs). However, as a new technology emerges, it throws new challenges to the research community. Although there exist many solutions of different kinds in the relevant areas, there is still a requirement of more efficient solutions which can be used in wide variety of applications. Many industrial and academic institutions have already geared up to provide solutions for the benefits of the community. Moreover, there are many constraints that have to be resolved before providing any standard solution. While the mission of the conference is to share novel basic research ideas as well as experimental applications in the BodyNets area in addition to identifying new directions for future research and development the new scientific topics such as nano communication networks, bio-inspired networks, molecular networks, etc. will be considered. BodyNets 2012 will give researchers a unique opportunity to share their perspectives with others interested in the various aspects from molecular to micro level communication to novel applications in medicine, gaming to automobile industry. In particular, the self-* properties (self-configuration, self-optimization, self-healing and self-protection) outline the fundamental features of an autonomic computing system. Parallel and distributed systems, a computing domain with great applicability in a variety of industrial and domestic contexts, rely on self-* software to manage a large number of heterogeneous computation, communication, and storage resources. The challenges of energy efficiency, dependability and security are of particular interest. This special issue addresses the software aspects of the whole design and operational process and system architecture of self-* parallel and distributed systems. We welcome studies on all forms of software, including application software and system software. The relevant scope of parallel and distributed systems widely covers, but is not limited to, embedded systems, large-scale networks, cyber-physical systems (CPS), cloud-computing etc. The systems under focus should integrate software with clear and novel self-* features to be qualified for acceptance. Autonome Sensorknoten nehmen dabei Parameter der Umwelt durch Sensoren wahr und können diese durch Aktoren beeinflussen. Eine Vielzahl solcher autonomer und ressourcenbeschränkter Knoten kooperiert dabei mittels drahtloser Kommunikation. Die Eigenschaften dieser Knoten und Netze implizieren eine Vielzahl von neuartigen Herausforderungen, die sich in einer regen Forschungsaktivität widerspiegeln. Ziel dieser Reihe von Fachgesprächen ist es, Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftlern aus Wissenschaft, Forschung und Industrie die Möglichkeit zu einem informellen Gedankenaustausch zu geben und die Kooperation in diesem multidisziplinären Forschungsbereich zu verstärken. The mission of the Wireless Health conference is to provide the highest-profile academic, clinical, and industrial research forum and to develop an international community that will accelerate the development and adoption of a new vision for improving health and lowering costs. Central to this mission is the creation of a nurturing research forum that communicates the latest developments in the field, creates an opportunity for transdisciplinary collaboration, and provides an archival venue for the progress being achieved. The third annual Wireless Health conference will build upon the successes of Wireless Health 2010 and 2011, each of which included ~400 attendees from medicine, health sciences, academia, industry, government, and press. RESEARCH PAPERS AND ABSTRACTS The organizing committee invites the submission of papers and abstracts for peer review that describe research with the potential for substantive impact on the field of Wireless Health. The committee solicits original contributions in engineering, medicine, health promotion and disease prevention, and innovative applications of Wireless Health principles and technologies in clinical and public health settings. Sample topics of interest can be found below. Research papers and abstracts will be reviewed by a multidisciplinary panel, including experts from engineering, computer science, medicine, behavioral health, and other health sciences. DEMONSTRATION ABSTRACTS The committee also invites abstracts describing demonstrations that represent advances in fundamental components and/or complete systems serving individuals/communities. Demonstrations at the conference will include both short presentations and space in the demonstration hall. SAMPLE TOPICS OF INTEREST Wireless Health Technologies Original contributions in engineering and computer science disciplines with clinical applications are solicited. However, a battery-powered system has a finite operation time. Power supplies using energy- harvesting devices apparently open the door to unlimited and uninterrupted operation. This requires a dedicated power management that predicts available power budgets and aims at maximizing performance metrics for a given budget. Power management encompasses many facets, such as power leakage, radio duty cycle, sampling rates, harvesting efficiency, energy intake prediction, etc. WORKSHOP FORMAT AND TOPICS The focus of this workshop is to provide a platform for discussing intermediate research results and for vivid exchange of ideas. It is also intended to identify required steps and promising future research directions within scope in order to push the penetration power of energy-harvesting sensor networks one step forward. For that purpose, we particularly enencourage preliminary contributions by Ph.D. students in addition to completed work. In addition to paper presentations, there will be a poster and demo session. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * All aspects of network protocol research including design, specification, verification, implementation, measurement, testing, and analysis * Domain-specific solutions, including protocols for network security, routing, user privacy, and network management * Protocols spanning the hardware and solution stack for wireless, mobile, sensor, mesh networks * Application-layer protocols for peer-to-peer systems, social networks, and emerging systems Papers must deal specifically with aspects of network protocol research. Papers on general networking where network protocols are only a secondary focus will be considered only if they are of exceptional quality. ICNP will select an accepted full paper for the best paper award. ICNP 2012 will use a double-blind review process. Papers should adhere to the IEEE Computer Society format and should not exceed 10 pages. Authors are expected to present accepted papers at the conference; at least one registration per-paper is required in order for the paper to appear in the conference proceedings and the IEEE digital library. The setting is informal. Topics of interest are the same as research topics in the SIGCOMM conference call for papers. Although anyone can submit a poster/demo, preference will be given to posters/demos where the primary contribution is from one or more students. The SIGCOMM 2012 Poster/Demo committee will review all posters and demo proposals. At the conference, a student must present student posters. Authors of accepted papers in SIGCOMM 2012 may not submit a poster on the same work in those papers. Student Research Competition The SIGCOMM poster session will also serve as an ACM student research competition. Qualified entrants must have current ACM student membership, have graduate or undergraduate student status at the time of submission (May 2012, below), and be submitted by a single student author. Supervisors are not permitted to coauthor the poster. (Please contact the poster chairs if this restriction represents a hardship.) Undergraduates and graduate students will be treated in separate divisions. (Students starting their first year of graduate school at the time of the conference will be considered as undergraduates.) A small travel supplement is made available to accepted entrants: please also submit applications for travel grant support. The ACM SRC program is sponsored by Microsoft Research. Winners will advance to ACM Grand Finals of the Student Research Competition to compete against the winners of other ACM conferences. Why Should You Submit a Poster? This is a great chance especially for students to obtain interesting and valuable feedback on ongoing research from a knowledgeable crowd at the conference. In addition, the top few submissions will be forwarded for publication to ACM SIGCOMM's newsletter, the ACM Computer Communication Review (CCR). Travel Grants for Student Posters Students who are submitting posters are highly encouraged to examine if they are eligible for student travel grants. What is a Poster? We define a poster to be A0 paper size in portrait mode (841x1189mm), to which you can affix visually appealing material that describes your research. Alternatively, you can use the space as a continuum. You should prepare the best material (visually appealing and succinct) that effectively communicates your research problem, techniques, results, and what is novel and important about your work. Note that you do not submit such a large-format image; only an abstract describing in text what the poster would present. What and Where to Submit Submission instructions will be available via at the SIGCOMM website at: http://conferences.sigcomm.org/sigcomm/2012/ Submissions are single blind, so please include authors' names and affiliation. Content: The abstract should clearly state: * the problem being addressed; * what makes this problem interesting, important, and difficult; * your approach to the problem; * the key contribution In the final version of the abstract, you should include a URL that provides additional information about your work to the attendees. Formatting: Prepare your abstract using ACM conference style, modified to 10pt. Concretely, two columns, minimum 10pt times with 0.75 inch margins and 1/3 inch space between columns. The abstract must be within the page limit and in PDF format. Word documents will not be accepted. At the conference, we will distribute the abstracts to all conference attendees.
