These nodes are deeply embedded into the physical surroundings, and gather and process information such as temperature, humidity, light characteristics, seismic activities or images and sound samples from the physical world. Networked systems of such sensors are expected to be used in a variety of applications including habitat monitoring, precision agriculture, disaster recovery operations, healthcare and supply chain management. Real-world sensor network deployments are still scarce, yet prototypic implementations are getting more common, particularly with the advent of novel sensing platforms such as smartphones, which allow for extending dedicated sensor networks. Experiences gained in such deployments are crucial for the sensor network research community. These results are needed to refine assumptions made when designing hardware, software, protocols and mechanisms for sensor networks. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from both academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. We expect the workshop to act as a forum for the sensor network research community to discuss open issues, novel solutions and the future development of wireless sensor networks in general. We encourage contributions describing innovative work in the realm of wireless sensor networks. *Scope* Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Experiences from real-world sensor network deployment and applications - Innovative sensor network applications - Mobile and participatory sensing applications and deployments - Middleware support for sensor networks - Programming and debugging sensor networks - Security, availability and dependability issues in sensor networks - Experiences with new sensor hardware - Practical problems in implementing localization and time synchronization - Experiences with communication protocols - Practical medium access control protocols (MACs) - Topology control and routing protocols in existing sensor network deployments - Fault-tolerance and troubleshooting sensor networks - Antenna design and experiences with signal propagation - Experiences regarding energy management and network lifetime - Configuration and installation support - Management of large-scale sensor networks and sensing campaigns - Interconnection between IP and sensor networks - Interfacing with sensor networks using mobile computing devices - Large-scale open sensor data sets from real deployments Submitted papers will be reviewed by three independent experts in the field. Popular technologies such the IEEE 802.11 were the catalyst for the widespread use of wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). Nomadic computing, home networks, and Wi- Fi services are now common place. The transition to multi-hop wireless networks has seemed natural for quite some time now, but has yet to happen. Nonetheless, wireless networks have become important to a range of applications and systems. Numerous research efforts contributed systems and protocols for that purpose and lead to new, lower cost equipment, products, and services. At the same time, impromptu and on-demand formation of networks, often ephemeral, volatile, or highly mobile, got increased attention in the community, resulting in a large volume of novel schemes to basically revise networking. The increasing capabilities and the proliferation of wireless devices, and the increasing needs of their users raise new technical challenges. To address those, both theoretical and systems approaches are invaluable. In this ICCCN track, we invite submissions of works with novel contributions of either type. One such application is Smart Monitoring where smart devices can remotely monitor a patient's vital signs as well as other contextual information. In this regard the Smart Monitoring System consists of traditional health care sensors such as EKG, blood pressure, pulse-oximeter and glucose meter as well as other sensors for recording the contextual information such as motion, temperature, light, humidity etc. The patient's medical and contextual information can be locally processed and automatically transmitted to the relevant health-care staff, or they can be handled locally in the homes. These smart devices can assist in knowledge extraction and filtering the unwanted data. The quality of current health care system can be significantly improved by using these smart devices. The realization of Smart Monitoring is technically challenging as it involves many research areas such as wearable computing, context-awareness, sensor data fusion, security and privacy, reliable communication protocols, decision support systems and user-friendly interfaces. Although significant progress has been made in last few years, however, more work is needed to for the pragmatic realization of this technology. The objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers from academia to present their work and get the feedback. The workshop on VANETs from Theory to Practice (VTP 2012) will to bring together researchers on VANETs to present and discuss recent advances in the development of inter-vehicular networking technologies. The workshop covers all theoretical and practical aspects related to applications modelling, simulation, prototyping and testbeds in VANETs. Despite the interest raised by this decade-old research topic, the development of WSN software is still carried out in a rather primitive fashion, by building software directly atop the operating system and by relying on an individuals hard-earned programming skills. WSN developers must face not only the functional application requirements but also a number of challenging, non-functional requirements and constraints resulting from scarce resources. The heterogeneity of network nodes, the unpredictable environmental influences, and the large size of the network further add to the difficulties. In the WSN community there is a growing awareness of the need for methodologies, techniques, and abstractions that simplify the development task and increase the confidence in the correctness and performance of the resulting software. Software engineering (SE) support is therefore sought, not only to ease the development task but also to make it more reliable, dependable, and repeatable. Nevertheless, this topic has received so far very little attention by the SE community. SESENA12 aims to attract researchers belonging to both the SE and WSN communities, not only to exchange recent research results on the topic, but also to stimulate discussion about the core open problems and to define a shared research agenda. The workshop welcomes both research contributions and position statements. The former will foster in depth technical discussions of novel results with an audience composed of both SE and WSN researchers. The latter will provide the opportunity for presenting open problems, provocative views, or previously unexplored ideas in an informal fashion. SESENA12 will also host two special sessions: (i) a "speakers’ corner" composed of impromptu presentations where attendees (including those without accepted papers) will have the opportunity to present their own views in very short segments (e.g., 2-4 minutes), and (ii) a session dedicated to the VISION project, an FP7 ERC Starting Grant focusing on developing an innovative infrastructure for real-time sensing services. In the latter session, the intermediate project results will be presented with the dual goal of sharing the uniqueness of the ERC-style grants and discussing technical elements to identify possible future collaborations. Topics of interest: The workshop focuses on software engineering issues arising in networked (embedded) sensing systems and their possible integration in Internet of Things scenarios. Ensuring high connectivity within the network is vital for real applications. Moreover, for many applications, sensor networks cannot operate in complete isolation. There must be a way enabling a monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced by the sensor network, and even to interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read the sensed values instantaneously, fix some inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By connecting the sensor network to an existing network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet, mobile network infrastructures, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and notably the global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be straightforward. The integration of RFID and WSN is one of the most promising technologies that will play an important role in the emergence of Internet of the Things (IoT). For example, in a healthcare application, RFID tags can be used to track the elders, whereas the sensors are used to monitor the elders’ conditions. However, many questions need answers, and many challenges must be tackled before such interconnection becomes effective. Suitability of IP standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks, doors will be opened to new vulnerabilities. An intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore, but he might remotely launch attacks. Security is thus a very important aspect that must be considered. Routing, QoS, and interoperability are also important and challenging issues in the new heterogeneous systems. Connecting different WSNs/part of a WSN is another issue that needs to be considered. A WSN might get partitioned into distinct segments due to battery exhaustion of sensors. Providing mechanisms to restore connectivity by connecting those segments is of high importance, where an isolated segment of sensor nodes that cannot reach its sink can exploit the existence of a neighboring reachable WSN to deliver its sensed information. This workshop is a forum for researchers, academics, and industrials to debate the different issues related to the interconnection of wireless sensor networks, and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions. Wireless sensor and actor networks (WSANs) are the confluence point where the traditional fields of wireless sensor networks (WSNs), robot networks and control theory meet. In WSAN, nodes collaborate to accomplish distributed sensing and actuation tasks. Leveraged by the control and mobility of actors, the networking process and applications embrace a whole new set of possibilities. Actors may deploy, repair and relocate sensors to improve coverage, build routes and fix network partition to ensure data communication, change network topology to shape routing patterns and balance energy consumption, and respond to reported events in a timely and effective manner. The benefits are limited only by imagination. As an emerging field, WSANs are in need of new networking techniques, by which they can fully exploit their particularities and potentials. WiSARN aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the design, specification and implementation of architectures, algorithms and protocols for current and future applications of WSAN. Original, unpublished contributions are solicited in ALL aspects of WSANs, WSNs, robot networks, and robotics and automation. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: * Autonomous sensor networks * Emergent behavior in WSAN * Modeling and simulation of WSAN * WSAN architectural and operational models * Autonomic and self-organizing coordination and communication * Sensor-actor (robot) and actor-actor coordination * Energy-efficient and real-time communication protocols * Bandwidth-efficient and delay-tolerant communication protocols * Distributed control and management in WSAN * Neighborhood discovery and mobility management * Communication protocols for swarms of mobile actors (robots) * Map exploration and pattern formation of mobile robots * Actor (robot) task assignment * Biologically inspired communication * Ecological systems * Architectures and topology control * Localization in WSAN * Probabilistic integration in WSAN * Quality of service, security and robustness issues * Applications and prototypes * Hybrid networks and wireless Internet * Data management, gathering, aggregation and query processing Papers must not exceed 6 single-spaced and two-column pages using at least 10 point size type on 8.5 x 11 inches pages, and must be formatted in strict accordance with the IEEE author guidelines. Submissions are being considered with the understanding that they describe original research, neither published nor under review elsewhere. Accepted papers will be published in the IEEE Digital Library after the conference and included in DCOSS 2012 proceedings. Electronic security systems may help to provide better and faster security and safety for the general public. Application scenarios may include intrusion detection and monitoring of large crowds in order to provide guidance in case of unexpected events (e.g., a mass panic). However, current security systems used within the public infrastructure are typically expensive, not trivial to deploy, difficult to operate and maintain, prone to malfunction due to individual component failures, and generally lack citizen privacy-friendliness. The advent of novel, large-scale distributed security systems based on wireless, lightweight sensors may enhance security and safety in public spaces. SESP 2012 is an international forum for researchers, developers, and practitioners to demonstrate new ideas, techniques, and tools that enable the design of inexpensive, flexible, resilient, and privacy-friendly security systems for enhanced security and safety in public spaces. However, most of the existing sensor network installations have in common that they are not considered time critical. No immediate action has to be undertaken as a response to the received data. In contrast, many envisioned future application areas of wireless sensor networks (such as plant automation and control, traffic management, medical applications, emergency solutions) require immediate and guaranteed actions. In such environments, data has to be transported reliably and in time through the sensor network towards the end user. To make the networking task more complex, in many applications the end user or the controlling intelligence is located remotely (e.g., remote monitoring, supervision and surveillance applications), and the wireless sensor network interworks with other networks (e.g., fixed infrastructure cellular, Internet). Due to the lack of appropriate models, components and protocols, it is currently very difficult to construct and operate a wireless sensor network with performance guarantees. Graph theory is among the most widely used tools for modeling and analyzing the many types of interactions, relations and dynamics in these systems. Many problems of practical interest can be represented by graphs. The use of graph theory in vehicular networks, or more broadly highly dynamic networks, is of particular interest. The complex interactions among vehicles, between vehicles and road-side infrastructure, combined with the high mobility of vehicles and fast changing topology, present some unique challenges in network modeling and performance analysis, network design, resource management and communication protocol design. This special section aims to provide recent advances in graph theory that are applicable to highly dynamic networks, particularly vehicular networks, identify challenges in the area and present possible solutions, and furthermore to unveil the significant potential of graph theory in the domain of vehicular networks. ICWCUCA is a forum for academic researchers, professionals and industrial specialists that are interested in innovative applications or field trials related to telecommunications in such confined areas. ICWCUCA was originally dedicated to wireless communications in confined environments for industrial mining applications. This year, the conference addresses a broader spectrum including unusual environments, wireless sensor network applications, and wireless network applications. An unusual environment refers to an environment that can be hazardous, costly or hard to reach. Such an environment can have experienced a natural or industrial disaster, or can be a remote natural area. It is subject to specific propagation conditions (as it is the case in mine galleries or inside the human body). In these conditions, network solutions have to be self-powered, robust against node losses, deployed quickly, and they have to provide a service during a long period (usually expressed in years). Thus, research on wireless sensor networks is a topic for ICWCUCA. Communication protocols that have limited energy consumption, that are resistant to losses and that can satisfy the application temporal constraints, on a peculiar physical medium, are the main expected contributions. Some of the information is stored in the Internet Cloud, where computing, communication, and storage services are main services provided for Internet users. In a non-distant future many of our queries will be beyond current Internet scope and will be about the people, the physical environments that surround us, and virtual environments that we will be involved. Having witnessed the phenomenal burst of research in cloud computing, Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) is to extend cloud computing functions, services and results to the world of future mobile applications. MCC will address issues that current Internet Clouds or Mobile Computing Technologies alone cannot effectively or efficiently address. The MCC workshop is intended to bring together researchers, developers, and practitioners in current mobile computing and cloud computing from academia, industry, and service providers, to share ideas, experiences, and practical implementations related to new MCC technologies and applications. Both position and working-in-progress papers are encouraged. Workshop participants will discuss emerging and future trends in research and application that integrate the cloud computing paradigm into mobile devices, mobile applications, security and privacy, and mobile services, evaluating the impact of mobile applications on cloud computing techniques. Advances in Software Engineering Special Issue on Self-* Parallel and Distributed Systems Call for papers Autonomic computing has been identified as a promising solution to cope with the overwhelming complexity in modern and next-generation computer systems. In particular, the self-* properties (self-configuration, self-optimization, self-healing and self-protection) outline the fundamental features of an autonomic computing system. Parallel and distributed systems, a computing domain with great applicability in a variety of industrial and domestic contexts, rely on self-* software to manage a large number of heterogeneous computation, communication, and storage resources. The challenges of energy efficiency, dependability and security are of particular interest. This special issue addresses the software aspects of the whole design and operational process and system architecture of self-* parallel and distributed systems. We welcome studies on all forms of software, including application software and system software. The relevant scope of parallel and distributed systems widely covers, but is not limited to, embedded systems, large-scale networks, cyber-physical systems (CPS), cloud-computing etc. The systems under focus should integrate software with clear and novel self-* features to be qualified for acceptance. Years of effort had been given by researchers and engineers to maximize the lifetime of WSNs in almost all the aspects, e.g., routing, topology control, deployment, data aggregation, clustering, and sleep scheduling. However, recently advanced technical developments have allowed sensor nodes to harvest environmental energy from natural sources, e.g., wind, water flow, ocean currents, and solar, which enable WSNs to have the rechargeable energy supply. With multiple energy sources, the overall efficiency, reliability and sustainability are enhanced in any WSN application system. This emerging technical development gives sensor nodes a totally different energy model compared to traditional battery powered sensor nodes, which fundamentally changed the assumption for many existing lifetime optimization schemes. We should look back almost all traditional challenging issues in WSNs to cope with this new changing. New research issues, e.g., power management with multiple energy sources, should also be considered. This special issue aims at seeking new approaches, methods, and schemes for solving both traditional and new challenging issues in WSNs with environmental energy harvesting. Authors are invited to submit complete unpublished papers, which are not under review in any other journal. As a result, we have witnessed the emergence of the so-called paradigm of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication. M2M devices are often characterized by very modest data rates, low mobility and stringent cost requirements, along with the need to communicate over a wide area. Besides, in the coming years, M2M devices are expected to significantly outnumber voice and (often bandwidth-hungry) data terminals. All this entails a major re-design of future cellular networks, which were originally conceived with human-to-human communications in mind. This opens a wide research area for future M2M communications, including investigations on scalability, wide-area coverage, energy-efficiency, spectral-efficiency, heterogeneity, cooperation, security and inter-networking architectures. To this end, the European Telecommunication Standards Institute's M2M Technical Committee has proposed a hybrid architecture whereby cellular-enabled gateways act as traffic aggregation and protocol translation points for their capillary (i.e. wireless sensor) networks. Capillary networks, in turn, are composed of a potentially high number of devices (namely, sensors and actuators) equipped with short-range radio interfaces, often compliant IEEE802.15.4-related standards. Current standardization activities in 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) encompass a number of optimizations specifically addressing machine-type communication needs. Moreover, IPSO (IP for Smart Objects) is assembling a protocol stack from standards being finalized at the IEEE and IETF. This special issue aims at gathering recent advances in the areas of advanced M2M communication systems, and technologies, with the perspective of current M2M-related standardization activities in 3GPP, ETSI, IEEE, IETF and IPSO. The workshop on VANETs from Theory to Practice (VTP 2012) will to bring together researchers on VANETs to present and discuss recent advances in the development of inter-vehicular networking technologies. The workshop covers all theoretical and practical aspects related to applications modelling, simulation, prototyping and testbeds in VANETs. They are computer networked and user reconfigurable. A device can be seen as part of a cloud or operate autonomously. It is a device, consisting of CPU, storage and network access and has the intelligence to perform services both reactive and proactive. It can also be seen as a part of a smart environment, i.e. interact with a physical world consisting of sensors and actuators, displays and computational elements that are connected through a continuous network. However this type of service has severe problems if it is to be adopted in the business area. Some aspects which are not solved for the mobile domain include dependability, device management, provability of intent and information filtering. Due to the increasing computing capabilities and the increasing quality of hard- and software of smartphones, we expect these problems to find solutions in the next years and solicit any original scientific work which addresses one of these unsolved challenges. Power management encompasses many facets, such as power leakage, radio duty cycle, sampling rates, harvesting efficiency, energy intake prediction, etc. WORKSHOP FORMAT AND TOPICS The focus of this workshop is to provide a platform for discussing intermediate research results and for vivid exchange of ideas. It is also intended to identify required steps and promising future research directions within scope in order to push the penetration power of energy-harvesting sensor networks one step forward. Online social networks are among the most popular sites on the Web and continue to grow rapidly. Online social networks provide mechanisms for establishing online identities and creating relationships. The resulting social graph provides a network for maintaining social relationships and for locating content, with the potential of changing computer systems and applications, for example, by providing new means to publish and find content as well as new ways to reason about trust. To achieve similar improvements in mobile networking and related fields, large-scale, and ideally planet-scale, datasets must be collected and made available. This 4th ACM HotPlanet workshop will challenge the community to collect large-scale human mobility traces as well as to propose novel mobility data processing and knowledge discovery techniques, also showcasing demonstrations of innovative realworld technology. All fonts must be embedded within the PDF and be Type 1 (scalable). Online social networks are among the most popular sites on the Web and continue to grow rapidly. Online social networks provide mechanisms for establishing online identities and creating relationships. The resulting social graph provides a network for maintaining social relationships and for locating content, with the potential of changing computer systems and applications, for example, by providing new means to publish and find content as well as new ways to reason about trust. The success of smart power grid is highly dependent on the communication systems that support efficient two-way energy and information flows. In addition to delivering a large amount of power data, the communication architecture is required to support demand response management, load balancing, self-healing and operation in islanded mode, and seamless integration of renewable energy sources. The emerging research field of smart grid has created multi-disciplinary research opportunities and potentials. The aim of this special issue is to present a collection of high-quality research papers that report the latest research advances in smart grid communication systems. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: . Communications architectures and systems . Smart Meters and Automatic Metering Infrastructure (AMI) . Home-area, Neighborhood-area, Field-area, and Wide-area networks . Sensor and actuator networks for smart grid . Cyber-physical system and cyber-physical approach . Analysis, model, optimization, monitoring, and control . Security and privacy management . Demand response management . Greenness, efficiency, reliability, availability, robustness, and fault-tolerance . Simulation related issues regarding Smart Grid communications . Communication in Smart Grids applications, e.g., Home Energy Management, AMI, Outage Management, Distribution Management, Distribution Automation, etc. PAPER SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS All manuscripts for this special issue should be submitted electronically to the IEEE Systems Journal website (http://isj.engineering.utsa.edu/papersub.html). Authors should indicate that their manuscript is being submitted for the Special Issue on Smart Grid Communications Systems. Embedded sensors and data capture devices in such environments have potential to capture the state of the evolving physical systems and processes creating situational awareness of the activities in the instrumented space. Situational awareness, in a broad sense, refers to a continuum of knowledge that captures the current state of the physical environments being observed, to future projected states of these observed environments. Such situational awareness offers opportunities to realizing new functionalities and / or bringing transformational improvements in many application domains. While the potential of sensor enabled situational awareness is well recognized, its realization poses numerous challenges which are being actively pursued by the research communities in different disciplines ranging from embedded computing, networking, distributed systems, middleware, data management, software engineering, machine learning, to privacy and security. On the application side, sensor enabled situational awareness forms a critical core for several of the emerging applications including environmental monitoring, Internet of Things and Cyber Physical Systems. The purpose of this workshop is to serve as a multidisciplinary forum to bring researchers from diverse disciplines to discuss the state of the art, identify new emerging challenges and opportunities. With CPS week hosting several conferences related to the domain of cyber physical systems, including IPSN and ICCPS, SESA serves as a fitting venue to discuss the broad challenges in the domain before specific ch allenges are addressed in each of these conferences. The workshop will comprise contributed and invited papers, a keynote and a panel on topics as outlined below. List of Topics: We solicit papers/contributions related (but not limited) to the following themes: New sensing modalities - e.g., audio/video sensors, mobile phone based sensing, human sensors and social networking as information sources. Novel applications of sensor enabled situational awareness. Programming methodologies /abstractions that overcome complexities due to sensor heterogeneity, uncertainty, and errors in sensor data. Modeling & understanding observed environments. Context reasoning and aggregation leading to situational awareness. Scalability and robustness of sensor driven systems that continuously monitor physical spaces. Privacy challenges due to fine-grained sensor data capture. Take advantage of diversity of communication methodologies aware. Energy aware applications optimizing on limited battery capacity even when it comes to today's smartphones. Experiences in building sensor driven situational awareness. Paper Submission: A submission should report on original, previously unpublished research that is not being concurrently considered elsewhere for publication in a journal or conference. A submission consists of up to 8 single-spaced pages using at least 11-point Times Roman font and one-inch margins on all sides on A4 or letter sized pages. The page limit includes title page, references, figures, and tables. Extra material, such as additional experiments, proofs, and graphs, can be included in a clearly-marked appendix, which will be read at the discretion of the program committee. Submissions deviating from these guidelines will not be reviewed. At least one author of each accepted paper must register for the workshop and present the paper.
