Wireless networks are expected to encompass heterogeneous access technologies and the Internet backbone for providing services to both mobile and fixed users. It poses significant technical challenges to enable broadband wireless access with seamless and ubiquitous coverage and quality-of-service provisioning. The objective of this symposium is to exchange and proposes new ideas and results that can improve the actual wireless systems or protocols. They have a considerable engineering, commercial and societal impact and pose numerous challenges to designers. One class of issues is the continuous offering of services in spite of various types of failures that are everyday events in networks. The increasing complexity, the participation of many different autonomous entities in the service provision, the lack of information, coordinated actions as well as governance makes this challenge increasingly difficult. In addition to a design of reliable network segments, server clusters etc., new technological issues like stability and failure management across heterogeneous autonomous systems arise. They also involve novel fields at the border of technology, business and society, like risk-awareness or influence of public policy. The goal of this issue is to present state of the art research contributions that focus on the reliable network-based services (RNS) provisioning. The fast growth and adoption of virtualization and cloud computing technologies pose new management challenges that must be addressed. Although some virtualization techniques are already used in telecommunication networks, the full potential that can be achieved from a completely virtualized network environment is yet to be realized. A fully virtualized solution would be extremely flexible, allowing multiple networks to operate simultaneously over the same infrastructure, while supporting different technologies, protocols, topologies, and QoS/QoE requirements. The application of virtualization in mobile networks is an emergent topic of active research and its impact on resource, mobility, and network management as well as the associated security and autonomicity challenges are under investigation. These topics become even more complex with the increasing pressure for energy-efficient network systems. Most of the current literature focuses on a particular subset of these aspects, but does not tackle their interrelationships. We invite authors to submit papers reporting original, previously unpublished research which fill this gap and follow either evolutionary approaches based on current IP-centered architectures or introduce revolutionary designs and new paradigms. Experimental/testbed and empirical studies as well as implementation/industry results (including field trials) are also welcome. Soon, it was realized that this network organization leads to rapid energy exhaustion of sensors around the base station since these nodes should relay all the traffic destined for the base station. In addition, the passive nature of static sensors which can only sense and are unable to move is not always helpful in target-tracking scenarios or in cases where real-time action is necessary for handling emergency situations. Apparently, a reactive (dynamic) behavior from these networks would be effective for dealing with a number of changing operational conditions (e.g. node failures, energy exhaustion in some nodes) or with real-time events. This Special Issue will focus on all forms of reactive behavior that can be incorporated in the functionality of a Wireless Sensor Network and will also identify new possibilities, opportunities and challenges deriving from this new paradigm. Call for Papers IEEE International Workshop on Mobile Consumer Health Care Networks, Systems and Services (MobiCHeSS’12) 10th – 15th of June 2012, Ottawa, Canada Satellite Workshop of the IEEE International Conference on Communications (IEEE ICC 2012) Goals and Topics Healthcare providers from around the globe are currently faced with significant challenges due to an exponential rise in costs, increased demand for services, and limited access to financial and human resources. This is directly linked to the fact that people are living longer with an expected 761 million of us being over the age of 65 by 2025. This will increase the risk of chronic disease and other co-morbidities amongst the elderly and estimates suggest that treating this particular group of people currently accounts for 78% of all healthcare expenditure (over a trillion US dollars per year) with spending expected to be $4.3 trillion in 2018 compared to $27.5 billion in 1960. Whilst increasing life expectancy is at an all-time high, it has become difficult to sustain. One suggestion is that quality of life and life expectancy can be increased through healthy aging and lifestyle choices. Positive behavioural changes will empower people and support the prevention of acute episodes, including the provision of provide better services that are tailored to people’s healthcare needs. This presents a unique opportunity were the use of information and communications technology could be used to support the delivery and management of healthcare services. Building on advances in Smartphone technologies and wireless communications it is possible to bridge the gap between people and medical facilities and transform healthcare services and clinical intervention within the community. These technologies, as well as allowing us to make a phone call, text a friend, or update our social networking site, provide access to vital data about a person that can be collected and analysed to support research, medical and healthcare education, and clinical practice with less reliance on secondary care (hospital admissions). Empowering people in the community, particularly the aging population, allows them to evaluate lifestyle choices and to take control of their own healthcare needs. Diseases, such as diabetes and obesity are often caused by an accumulation of unmonitored health-related choices, such as poor nutrition and lack of exercise, which occur over decades rather than weeks or months. Smartphones, body sensors, and wireless communications provide the necessary tools to host community healthcare services and applications capable of real-time monitoring and analysis of lifestyle choices. Using digital diaries, social networking, SMS, amongst other technologies, makes it possible to manage adherence and provide education about relevant medical conditions, such as cystic fibrosis, sexual health, poor nutrition and the lack of exercise. All this will have the ability to empower people and encourage personal consumer healthcare beyond what is currently possible. Nonetheless, due to the criticality of healthcare and the complex coordination and delivery of healthcare services it is not surprising that we have not seen widespread adoption of mobile ICT in health. The healthcare domain is sensitive to change and this will require new processes, methodologies and tools, and this comes at a time when sustainable health is becoming increasingly more difficult. From a technical perspective, a number of challenges still remain and form part of the topics under this call for papers. Call for Papers IEEE Communications Magazine Consumer Communications and Networking Series Recent trends in consumer networking are that consumers are both creators and producers of content (albeit of varying quality!) and peer distribution is the natural model. This is one of the emerging trends that impact how consumers can use devices to create, manipulate, store, and access content — and is surely a much different view compared to only five years ago where most experts still viewed the world in terms of servers and clients, producers and consumers as distinct and separate entities. Indeed, there are still dinosaur organizations out there today who are fighting a rearguard action to protect their dwindling revenue streams because they haven’t been brave enough to embrace this new model. Trends like this are ones that papers for the consumer communications and networking series should address. We have also seen the technological reach of existing solutions being applied in unconventional ways where all aspects of our digital lives are being consumed to provide novel platforms where interoperation between disparate technologies is now possible. For example, the automotive industry is now producing cars that include ad hoc networks designed to provide multimedia solutions as well as links to wide area communications via satellite networks. Using these networking capabilities and interfaces such as USB we see automobile functionality being extended. In this sense the boundaries between the car and conventional consumer devices are beginning to blur. Perhaps the sole technology responsible for the many technological advances we see today is communications. Example communications technologies include the emergence of 3G and 4G, LTE and WiMax, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Ultrawideband, TV-band, and Powerline and Free space optical. Applications of these technologies include personal and body area networking, home networking, game networking, ad-hoc networking, and sensor networking. These networks may be connected through networking layers that are cognitive, peer-to-peer enabled, and have the properties of self organisation and management. These networks will become key enablers where we are already seeing ubiquitous content distribution models, for example, television can now be viewed wherever we are and on any devices capable of connecting to one of the many networking paradigms defined above. With these networks we can expect a platform for true innovation where content distribution will overlay these networks using compression, rights management, delivery, and appropriate quality of service mechanisms that can be seamlessly moved over these next generation networks. All of this is made possible by networking, software and middleware that present to the service designer the tools to provide ease of use, security, and stunning interactivity to the end consumer. With this in mind the IEEE Communications Magazine is seeking papers that emphasize consumer networking in whatever physical environment it finds itself. Handheld electronics, location devices, telecommunications networks, and a wide assortment of tags and sensors are constantly producing a rich stream of data reflecting various aspects of urban life. For urban planners and designers, these accumulations of digital traces are valuable sources of data in capturing the pulse of the city in an astonishing degree of temporal and spatial detail. Yet this condition of the hybrid city - which operates simultaneously in the digital and physical realms - also poses difficult questions about privacy, scale, and design, among many others. These questions must be addressed as we move toward achieving an augmented, fine-grained understanding of how the city functions - socially, economically and yes, even psychologically. This special issue aims to advance understanding of research challenges and opportunities in applying the pervasive computing paradigm to urban spaces. We are seeking multi-disciplinary contributions that reveal interesting aspects about urban life and exploit the digital traces to create novel urban applications that benefit citizens, urban planners, and policy makers. In this special issue, we are seeking high quality papers reporting original research results on Pervasive Urban Applications with a preference for works including evaluation studies based on empirical data of actual urban environments. Indeed, autonomous applications embedded in complex configurations and dynamic environments have rapidly expanded from classical applications where different modular devices, actuators and sensors interact closely. This has impacted considerably the control of a given system in a centralized manner. Current trends are to propose new autonomic architecture schemes that manage and control future emerging networks: sky of clouds, Internet of things, Smart Grids, etc. Healthcare and wellness applications such as helping elderly people, assisting dependent persons, habitat monitoring in a smart environment constitute some of the potential scenarios of convergence between autonomous systems and smart network technologies. These applications, (which are based on high-level commands) accomplish some specific tasks, reveal new challenges regarding mechanic design, portability, acceptability, power support and efficiency, control theory, etc. In addition to portability and low-power systems, which are vital challenges that limit substantially the efficiency of any autonomous system based application; network paradigms should also take into account issues related to cost, scalability and security. This workshop will highlight the overlapping of these two domains of autonomous systems and the smart network technologies devoted for different applications for a large variety of domains: Healthcare, Medical, Underwater, Vehicular, Robotic, etc. Issues related to concepts, new technologies, testbeds and trials, and protocols will elicit particular attention. All submitted papers will be rigorously reviewed and we will select papers based on their originality, timeliness, significance, and relevance to the workshop. All accepted papers must be presented and at least on author needs to register for the paper to be included in the workshop proceedings. Submitted papers should not be under consideration for publication anywhere else. Embedding actuation in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) opens a realm of opportunities for Wireless Sensor Actuator Network (WSAN) industrial applications requiring monitoring and control. While significant research progress have been made in networking and communication aspects of WSNs, new design paradigms are required for wireless sensor actor and actuator networks (WiSAANs). In particular new ideas are required to address the challenges resulting from introducing actors and actuators in the network. This workshop aims to bring the state- of-art research contributions in theory, design and implementation of communication protocols for WiSAANs. Another key objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers from academia and industry to present their work and share their views. We expect the workshop to act as a leading forum for the WSN research community to discuss their ideas on addressing the most current challenges, potential solutions and future developments of WiSAANs. Multiplayer networked games, which enable hundreds of thousands of players to simultaneously interact with each other, are now widely used not just for entertainments, but also for socializing, business, commerce, scientific experimentation, and many other practical purposes. The NPD Group reports that 59% of total US population (ages 2 years old and higher) play games, with 56% of them doing so online, leading to almost one third of the population playing online games, while DFC Intelligence forecasts the total number of gamers in the twenty leading online game countries to increase 51% by 2011 compared to 2006. The statistics for mobile gaming are equally impressive: it is estimated that 78.6 million people in the U.S. alone played mobile games in 2009, and downloads of mobile games increased tenfold compared to 2003. Literally millions of people spend their time and money in game worlds such as World of Warcraft, which now hosts more than 12 million subscribers with a peak of 500,000 players online at a given time, or Entropia Universe, which holds the number 1 and number 2 record for the most expensive “virtual” real estate sold for real money, each over US$300,000 per virtual property. As these online games become more popular and significant contributors to Internet traffic, research needs to be devoted to manage and support the emerging massiveness, its traffic on the network, and the users’ quality of experience. In this special issue, we focus on multiplayer games and cover scientific, engineering, and research topics in systems and networking support to enable such games. Context data of a physical environment is being collected by sensors, digitally processed as well as stored, and as a result processes and flows of this physical environment are controlled. However, social infrastructures are threatened by crime, terrorism, and natural disasters.A lesson learned from latest dramatically unwanted interference - Great East Japan Earthquake and its consequences - is that Cyber-physical systems cannot be protected against failures. There is always the possibility of an unexpected interference that breaks the assumptions of current risk management guidelines and standards. Resilience aims at an equilibrium of a system in case of interferences. It is not only understood in terms of resistance against threats and attacks (prevent and protect) but also in terms of the ability to mitigate them (respond). The affected system should still deliver trusted services in an hostile environment. A resilient Cyber-physical system consists of numerous components, such as sensors, working with each other in a decentralised way such that when some components fail, the system as a whole dynamically uses equivalent ones and runs the expected service continuously while at the same time fulfilling security requirements at an acceptable degree. Objective The workshop focuses on identifying open research questions and discussing mechanisms to establish this property. Additionally to accepted articles and their presentations, we plan to offer a combined demo, poster and video session to foster hands-on experience, discussion and collaboration among participants. (Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message) C A L L F O R P A P E R S ============================= Future Generation Computer Systems (FGCS) http://www.elsevier.com/locate/future Special Issue on "Management of Cloud Systems" The vision of Cloud computing is becoming a reality because of the recent advances in several significant computer and communications research areas, spanning from grid/virtualization/utility computing to Web 2.0 and Service Oriented Computing (SOC). At the current stage, after the initial hype of enthusiasm, several ongoing research efforts are deeply focusing on the open management aspects of the Cloud, such as interoperability, scalability, reliability, power management, and confidentiality/auditabi- lity, with the final goal to make Cloud technologies and services more mature so to enable and boost a more widespread industrial uptake of Cloud systems. Despite several recent provisioning of Cloud systems, it is still unclear whether current solutions can withstand the abrupt and unpredictably changes imposed by the emergent Cloud application scenarios, where services de/activation and the whole software stacks (from the kernel upward) have to scale up and down fast by exploiting highly distributed and heterogeneous virtualized resources. The mission of this Special Issue is to put on the foreground all the above issues and to disseminate the latest research result in this emergent research area, by providing a fresh snapshot of the current state-of-the-art in management of Cloud systems. Along that direction, this special issue will collect a mix of extended and updated versions of papers recently presented at the international Workshop on Management of Cloud Systems (MoCS 2011), and of other papers submitted from this open call. In particular, all the authors of papers accepted for inclusion in the MoCS11 proceedings are invited to submit extended versions of their workshop papers; in addition, we are asking for high-quality papers (from open call) reporting original research results. Contributions should present practical experiences of system design/pro- totyping/deployment related to topics that include, but are not limited to: * Novel adaptive management solutions for scalable, maintainable, cost- effective Cloud provision, at all software stack layers; * New methods and tools able to identify and enforce optimal trade-offs between performance, energy consumption, safety, and security; * New models and paradigms for the management of Cloud services at the host level and within/between data centers (intra-/inter-domain); * Emerging standards for interoperability (resource virtualization, specific computing interfaces, etc.), also between public and private Clouds; * Experimentation testbeds, field trials and empirical evaluations, and measurement studies; * Analytical and simulation models and tools to measure systems ability to scale and to achieve relevant energy savings. Soon, it was realized that this network organization leads to rapid energy exhaustion of sensors around the base station since these nodes should relay all the traffic destined for the base station. In addition, the passive nature of static sensors which can only sense and are unable to move is not always helpful in target-tracking scenarios or in cases where real-time action is necessary for handling emergency situations. Apparently, a reactive (dynamic) behavior from these networks would be effective for dealing with a number of changing operational conditions (e.g. node failures, energy exhaustion in some nodes) or with real-time events. This Special Issue will focus on all forms of reactive behavior that can be incorporated in the functionality of a Wireless Sensor Network and will also identify new possibilities, opportunities and challenges deriving from this new paradigm. As a result, there will be a strong demand for wireless communications and networking to provide information as well as onboard entertainment services to passengers and driver. Vehicular communication is expected to implement a variety of wired and wireless technologies for Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Roadside (V2R) communications. In Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) for V2V systems, communication may experience serious deterioration due to the lack of accurate channel state information and advanced radio-resource-allocation schemes to assign wireless resources to high-speed vehicles. Moreover, communication among high-speed vehicles through cellular communication networks causes frequent handovers and drop-offs resulting in degradation in overall system performance. This motivates researchers to design innovative resource allocation techniques and robust, as well as, fast handover schemes for dynamically changing topologies of VANETs. In VANETs for V2V communications, trust, security, privacy, and reliable routing are major concerns since the network topology changes constantly. Furthermore, physical layer design issues for wireless communications in high-speed mobile environments are also of vital importance to realize its full potential for ITS. All in all, vehicular communications with dynamically changing topologies is a demanding research topic. The goal of this issue is to bring together the state of the art research contributions that focus on vehicular communications and networking. The objective of this symposium is to exchange and proposes new ideas and results that can improve the actual wireless systems or protocols. The 13th ACM International Symposium on Mobile Ad Hoc Networking and Computing (June 11 - 14, 2012 Hilton Head Island, SC) ACM MobiHoc is a premier international symposium dedicated to addressing challenges emerging from wireless ad hoc networking and computing. With its highly selective technical program, the symposium will bring together researchers and practitioners from a broad spectrum of wireless networking research to present the most up-to-date results and achievements in the field. We invite paper submissions on mobile ad hoc networks, wireless sensor networks, wireless mesh networks, vehicular networks and ad hoc computing systems, with the focus being on issues at and above the MAC layer. Published papers will present original and novel research addressing theoretical challenges and/or practical issues in the wireless network design. This year's symposium will assign a Best Paper Award among all the papers submitted to the conference. Paper Submission Guidelines: Papers must report new results substantiated by experimentation, simulation, or analysis. All submissions will be handled electronically and must be in PDF format. Paper submissions for regular papers must be limited to 10 pages (US letter size, 8.5 x 11 inches) including text, figures and references. The font size must be at least 10 points. Margin must be 1 inch on all sides. Accepted papers will be published in the symposium proceedings. All submitted papers would be judged based on their quality through double-blind reviewing, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers. Therefore, authors' names must NOT appear in the paper or in the PDF file. Submitted papers must not be currently under review for any other publication. We welcome a broad range of topics concerning both technical and economical aspects, for example delay tolerant networks and other networking paradigms, business and services models, low power devices and protocols, user experiences and web applications. Following on from the success of ExtremeCom 2009 - The Midnight Sun Expedition in Laponia, Sweden, ExtremeCom 2010 - The Himalayan Expedition in Dharamsala, India, and ExtremeCom 2011 - The Amazon Expedition in Manaus Brazil, we now offer ExtremeCom 2012 - The Swiss Alps Winter Expedition. In this first winter edition, we aim to explore the challenges of the Swiss Alps during winter. Hosted by the ETH Zurich, the conference will start with 3 days of snowshoe hike in the Swiss Alps backcountry where the conference participants will be experimenting with solar-powered experiments. The immersion will not only give a better idea of both the technical and user requirements of such an harsh environment, but it will also give many opportunities for informal research discussions between the participants. Participants that have their own software for scenarios like this will also, to as great an extent as possible, be encouraged to test and demonstrate it within this environment. Upon reaching the end of the "field experience", there will be two days of paper presentations and demos in a high altitude hut with no electricity. We will rely on solar-panels to power laptops and beamers. Focus will still be on informal research discussions, with the hope that the field experience will give participants the ability to discuss the topics in a new light. Submission Guidelines ------------------------------- Participants should submit 6 page papers about ideas and visions about the topics of the conference or demo proposals to be shown during the conference. Visionary and thought-provoking papers that are likely to generate much discussion during the conference are especially solicited. The aim of the conference is to maintain an informal environment, where new research ideas can be discussed and developed. We also hope to have a demo session where participants can show their implementations and systems. If you want to show a demo, please submit a 2 page demo proposal using the same submission system as for conference papers. Accepted papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library. Some core characteristics of the ETT are: i) we have generally reduced reviewing cycles now to some weeks; ii) the publication of papers deemed to be of importance to the community can be fast-tracked to virtually immediate publication; iii) the journal is indexed with an impact factor of 0.45 which is raising; iv) acceptance rates are around 25%; and v) reviews are lately of substantial depth. The type of papers we are accepting are: i) traditional transactions papers; ii) short letters; iii) survey/tutorial/position papers (please consult with me first); and iv) papers accepted from special issues on emerging telecoms technologies. Whilst the official change will only be effective as of 1 January 2012, I thought of dropping you a message already. I greatly welcome submissions related to above topics already, which will naturally get more preference over the traditional topics of the ETT. We will also shortly commence with special issues, with the first special issue being on machine-to-machine (M2M) communications and a second one on quality-of-experience; more details are to follow.
