However, most of the existing sensor network installations have in common that they are not considered time critical. No immediate action has to be undertaken as a response to the received data. In contrast, many envisioned future application areas of wireless sensor networks (such as plant automation and control, traffic management, medical applications, emergency solutions) require immediate and guaranteed actions. In such environments, data has to be transported reliably and in time through the sensor network towards the end user. To make the networking task more complex, in many applications the end user or the controlling intelligence is located remotely (e.g., remote monitoring, supervision and surveillance applications), and the wireless sensor network interworks with other networks (e.g., fixed infrastructure cellular, Internet). Due to the lack of appropriate models, components and protocols, it is currently very difficult to construct and operate a wireless sensor network with performance guarantees. Thus, the commercial success of wireless sensor networks in many application areas is unsure unless this particular problem is understood and solved. The PWSN workshop will bring together researchers and practitioners working on performance issues within wireless sensor networks. The workshop intends to examine research challenges associated with achieving dependability in WSNs, share experiences from real-life deployment of dependable sensor networks, discuss application-dependent wireless sensor-actuator design methodologies, illustrate dependable MAC, network and transport protocols, and in general, explore issues of reliability in WSNs. The student presentations will be interleaved with speeches by leading researchers, who will provide their own perspectives on current and future sensor network research, as well as on how to best purse a Ph.D. in this field. Participating students will also have the opportunity to present a poster during the main conference to leverage further interaction with CPSWEEK attendees. Current Ph.D. students in the early stages of their career are encouraged to submit a 2-page extended abstract about their dissertation research in sensor networking to be considered for the Ph.D. Forum. The abstract shall also include a one-paragraph bio of the student, along with information on how long he/she has been in Ph.D. school and the expected time until graduation. The student should be the sole author, although contributions of the advisor and others should be acknowledged. Submissions will be reviewed by the Ph.D. Forum committee to ensure quality, relevance, and potential benefit from attendance to the Forum. Authors of accepted submissions are expected to participate in person to the Forum - to be held on April 15th, 2012 - and to present a poster both at the Forum and at the main conference. There will be no separate registration fee for the Forum. Submissions must be received no later than February 20th, 2012 via e-mail to luca(a)sics.se, with subject "IPSN12 PhD Forum Submission". SUMMARY ======= ICWCUCA 2012 (International Conference on Wireless Communications in Unusual and Confined Areas) is the third of a series of events focusing on wireless communications in harsh environments (such as confined areas, underground tunnels, inside industrial buildings or vehicles). ICWCUCA is a forum for academic researchers, professionals and industrial specialists that are interested in innovative applications or field trials related to telecommunications in such confined areas. ICWCUCA was originally dedicated to wireless communications in confined environments for industrial mining applications. This year, the conference addresses a broader spectrum including unusual environments, wireless sensor network applications, and wireless network applications. An unusual environment refers to an environment that can be hazardous, costly or hard to reach. Such an environment can have experienced a natural or industrial disaster, or can be a remote natural area. It is subject to specific propagation conditions (as it is the case in mine galleries or inside the human body). In these conditions, network solutions have to be self-powered, robust against node losses, deployed quickly, and they have to provide a service during a long period (usually expressed in years). Thus, research on wireless sensor networks is a topic for ICWCUCA. Communication protocols that have limited energy consumption, that are resistant to losses and that can satisfy the application temporal constraints, on a peculiar physical medium, are the main expected contributions. SCOPE ===== This year, the topics include, but are not limited to: - Propagation and Medium Characterization, - Modulation and Signal, - Antenna, - Wireless Sensor Network, - Communications for Mine Applications, - Applications of WLAN and WPAN, - Modeling, Simulation, Tests, - Intra-Vehicular and Inter-Vehicular Communications, - Communications between Life-Monitoring Devices. These nodes are deeply embedded into the physical surroundings, and gather and process information such as temperature, humidity, light characteristics, seismic activities or images and sound samples from the physical world. Networked systems of such sensors are expected to be used in a variety of applications including habitat monitoring, precision agriculture, disaster recovery operations, healthcare and supply chain management. Real-world sensor network deployments are still scarce, yet prototypic implementations are getting more common, particularly with the advent of novel sensing platforms such as smartphones, which allow for extending dedicated sensor networks. Experiences gained in such deployments are crucial for the sensor network research community. Popular technologies such the IEEE 802.11 were the catalyst for the widespread use of wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). Nomadic computing, home networks, and Wi- Fi services are now common place. The transition to multi-hop wireless networks has seemed natural for quite some time now, but has yet to happen. Nonetheless, wireless networks have become important to a range of applications and systems. Numerous research efforts contributed systems and protocols for that purpose and lead to new, lower cost equipment, products, and services. At the same time, impromptu and on-demand formation of networks, often ephemeral, volatile, or highly mobile, got increased attention in the community, resulting in a large volume of novel schemes to basically revise networking. The increasing capabilities and the proliferation of wireless devices, and the increasing needs of their users raise new technical challenges. To address those, both theoretical and systems approaches are invaluable. In this ICCCN track, we invite submissions of works with novel contributions of either type. In this regard the Smart Monitoring System consists of traditional health care sensors such as EKG, blood pressure, pulse-oximeter and glucose meter as well as other sensors for recording the contextual information such as motion, temperature, light, humidity etc. The patient's medical and contextual information can be locally processed and automatically transmitted to the relevant health-care staff, or they can be handled locally in the homes. These smart devices can assist in knowledge extraction and filtering the unwanted data. The quality of current health care system can be significantly improved by using these smart devices. The realization of Smart Monitoring is technically challenging as it involves many research areas such as wearable computing, context-awareness, sensor data fusion, security and privacy, reliable communication protocols, decision support systems and user-friendly interfaces. Although significant progress has been made in last few years, however, more work is needed to for the pragmatic realization of this technology. Despite the interest raised by this decade-old research topic, the development of WSN software is still carried out in a rather primitive fashion, by building software directly atop the operating system and by relying on an individuals hard-earned programming skills. WSN developers must face not only the functional application requirements but also a number of challenging, non-functional requirements and constraints resulting from scarce resources. The heterogeneity of network nodes, the unpredictable environmental influences, and the large size of the network further add to the difficulties. In the WSN community there is a growing awareness of the need for methodologies, techniques, and abstractions that simplify the development task and increase the confidence in the correctness and performance of the resulting software. Software engineering (SE) support is therefore sought, not only to ease the development task but also to make it more reliable, dependable, and repeatable. Nevertheless, this topic has received so far very little attention by the SE community. SESENA12 aims to attract researchers belonging to both the SE and WSN communities, not only to exchange recent research results on the topic, but also to stimulate discussion about the core open problems and to define a shared research agenda. The workshop welcomes both research contributions and position statements. The former will foster in depth technical discussions of novel results with an audience composed of both SE and WSN researchers. The latter will provide the opportunity for presenting open problems, provocative views, or previously unexplored ideas in an informal fashion. SESENA12 will also host two special sessions: (i) a "speakers’ corner" composed of impromptu presentations where attendees (including those without accepted papers) will have the opportunity to present their own views in very short segments (e.g., 2-4 minutes), and (ii) a session dedicated to the VISION project, an FP7 ERC Starting Grant focusing on developing an innovative infrastructure for real-time sensing services. In the latter session, the intermediate project results will be presented with the dual goal of sharing the uniqueness of the ERC-style grants and discussing technical elements to identify possible future collaborations. Topics of interest: The workshop focuses on software engineering issues arising in networked (embedded) sensing systems and their possible integration in Internet of Things scenarios. Ensuring high connectivity within the network is vital for real applications. Moreover, for many applications, sensor networks cannot operate in complete isolation. There must be a way enabling a monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced by the sensor network, and even to interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read the sensed values instantaneously, fix some inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By connecting the sensor network to an existing network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet, mobile network infrastructures, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and notably the global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be straightforward. The integration of RFID and WSN is one of the most promising technologies that will play an important role in the emergence of Internet of the Things (IoT). For example, in a healthcare application, RFID tags can be used to track the elders, whereas the sensors are used to monitor the elders’ conditions. However, many questions need answers, and many challenges must be tackled before such interconnection becomes effective. Suitability of IP standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks, doors will be opened to new vulnerabilities. An intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore, but he might remotely launch attacks. Security is thus a very important aspect that must be considered. Routing, QoS, and interoperability are also important and challenging issues in the new heterogeneous systems. Connecting different WSNs/part of a WSN is another issue that needs to be considered. A WSN might get partitioned into distinct segments due to battery exhaustion of sensors. Providing mechanisms to restore connectivity by connecting those segments is of high importance, where an isolated segment of sensor nodes that cannot reach its sink can exploit the existence of a neighboring reachable WSN to deliver its sensed information. This workshop is a forum for researchers, academics, and industrials to debate the different issues related to the interconnection of wireless sensor networks, and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions. Electronic security systems may help to provide better and faster security and safety for the general public. Application scenarios may include intrusion detection and monitoring of large crowds in order to provide guidance in case of unexpected events (e.g., a mass panic). However, current security systems used within the public infrastructure are typically expensive, not trivial to deploy, difficult to operate and maintain, prone to malfunction due to individual component failures, and generally lack citizen privacy-friendliness. The advent of novel, large-scale distributed security systems based on wireless, lightweight sensors may enhance security and safety in public spaces. SESP 2012 is an international forum for researchers, developers, and practitioners to demonstrate new ideas, techniques, and tools that enable the design of inexpensive, flexible, resilient, and privacy-friendly security systems for enhanced security and safety in public spaces. The workshop welcomes academia, government, industry, and contributing individuals to submit unpublished papers in theoretical and practical aspects of computer, networking and communications security. SESP will provide participants with fresh ideas, inspiring challenges, and novel approaches in the context of wireless sensor-based safety and security in public spaces. However, most of the existing sensor network installations have in common that they are not considered time critical. No immediate action has to be undertaken as a response to the received data. In contrast, many envisioned future application areas of wireless sensor networks (such as plant automation and control, traffic management, medical applications, emergency solutions) require immediate and guaranteed actions. In such environments, data has to be transported reliably and in time through the sensor network towards the end user. To make the networking task more complex, in many applications the end user or the controlling intelligence is located remotely (e.g., remote monitoring, supervision and surveillance applications), and the wireless sensor network interworks with other networks (e.g., fixed infrastructure cellular, Internet). Due to the lack of appropriate models, components and protocols, it is currently very difficult to construct and operate a wireless sensor network with performance guarantees. Thus, the commercial success of wireless sensor networks in many application areas is unsure unless this particular problem is understood and solved. The PWSN workshop will bring together researchers and practitioners working on performance issues within wireless sensor networks. The workshop intends to examine research challenges associated with achieving dependability in WSNs, share experiences from real-life deployment of dependable sensor networks, discuss application-dependent wireless sensor-actuator design methodologies, illustrate dependable MAC, network and transport protocols, and in general, explore issues of reliability in WSNs. MED-HOC-NET 2012, as its previous 10 predecessors focuses on communication networking research, especially on new issues in Wireless Ad-Hoc Networks, which include Application Scenarios, Data-centric Operation, Autonomous Organization, Optimization and Control, Operation under Intermittent Connectivity, and Service Creation and Support. The scope of the workshop also includes new and exciting challenges in wireless mesh networks, sensor networks, vehicular networks, delay tolerant and opportunistic networks, and the opportunities provided or stemming from the social networks paradigm. As a major annual international workshop, the 11th MED-HOC-NET aims to serve as a platform for researchers and visionaries from the academia, the research laboratories, and the industry to present their latest work. An unusual environment refers to an environment that can be hazardous, costly or hard to reach. Such an environment can have experienced a natural or industrial disaster, or can be a remote natural area. In these conditions, network solutions have to be self-powered, robust against node losses, deployed quickly, and they have to provide a service during a long period (usually expressed in years). Thus, research on wireless sensor networks is a topic for ICWCUCA. Communication protocols that have limited energy consumption, that are resistant to losses and that can satisfy the application temporal constraints, on a peculiar physical medium, are the main expected contributions. Advances in Software Engineering Special Issue on Self-* Parallel and Distributed Systems Call for papers Autonomic computing has been identified as a promising solution to cope with the overwhelming complexity in modern and next-generation computer systems. In particular, the self-* properties (self-configuration, self-optimization, self-healing and self-protection) outline the fundamental features of an autonomic computing system. Parallel and distributed systems, a computing domain with great applicability in a variety of industrial and domestic contexts, rely on self-* software to manage a large number of heterogeneous computation, communication, and storage resources. The challenges of energy efficiency, dependability and security are of particular interest. This special issue addresses the software aspects of the whole design and operational process and system architecture of self-* parallel and distributed systems. We welcome studies on all forms of software, including application software and system software. The relevant scope of parallel and distributed systems widely covers, but is not limited to, embedded systems, large-scale networks, cyber-physical systems (CPS), cloud-computing etc. The systems under focus should integrate software with clear and novel self-* features to be qualified for acceptance. Years of effort had been given by researchers and engineers to maximize the lifetime of WSNs in almost all the aspects, e.g., routing, topology control, deployment, data aggregation, clustering, and sleep scheduling. However, recently advanced technical developments have allowed sensor nodes to harvest environmental energy from natural sources, e.g., wind, water flow, ocean currents, and solar, which enable WSNs to have the rechargeable energy supply. With multiple energy sources, the overall efficiency, reliability and sustainability are enhanced in any WSN application system. This emerging technical development gives sensor nodes a totally different energy model compared to traditional battery powered sensor nodes, which fundamentally changed the assumption for many existing lifetime optimization schemes. We should look back almost all traditional challenging issues in WSNs to cope with this new changing. New research issues, e.g., power management with multiple energy sources, should also be considered. This special issue aims at seeking new approaches, methods, and schemes for solving both traditional and new challenging issues in WSNs with environmental energy harvesting. Authors are invited to submit complete unpublished papers, which are not under review in any other journal. As a result, we have witnessed the emergence of the so-called paradigm of Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication. M2M devices are often characterized by very modest data rates, low mobility and stringent cost requirements, along with the need to communicate over a wide area. Besides, in the coming years, M2M devices are expected to significantly outnumber voice and (often bandwidth-hungry) data terminals. All this entails a major re-design of future cellular networks, which were originally conceived with human-to-human communications in mind. This opens a wide research area for future M2M communications, including investigations on scalability, wide-area coverage, energy-efficiency, spectral-efficiency, heterogeneity, cooperation, security and inter-networking architectures. To this end, the European Telecommunication Standards Institute's M2M Technical Committee has proposed a hybrid architecture whereby cellular-enabled gateways act as traffic aggregation and protocol translation points for their capillary (i.e. wireless sensor) networks. Capillary networks, in turn, are composed of a potentially high number of devices (namely, sensors and actuators) equipped with short-range radio interfaces, often compliant IEEE802.15.4-related standards. Current standardization activities in 3GPP (Third Generation Partnership Project) encompass a number of optimizations specifically addressing machine-type communication needs. Moreover, IPSO (IP for Smart Objects) is assembling a protocol stack from standards being finalized at the IEEE and IETF. This special issue aims at gathering recent advances in the areas of advanced M2M communication systems, and technologies, with the perspective of current M2M-related standardization activities in 3GPP, ETSI, IEEE, IETF and IPSO. The design and implementation of these services in a high-performance, reliable, scalable, secure and privacy-preserving fashion presents exciting research challenges. Additionally, the experimentation and validation in VANETs either relies on simulations or testbeds. On the one hand, simulation requires realistic network and mobility models. On the other hand, with the emergence of communications standards and hardware, prototyping and testbeds allow to obtain performance measures under real-word conditions such as realistic signal propagation and vehicles' mobility. VANETs are therefore a popular and active research field with many ongoing large-scale projects involving governments, academia and industry. The workshop on VANETs from Theory to Practice (VTP 2012) will to bring together researchers on VANETs to present and discuss recent advances in the development of inter-vehicular networking technologies. The workshop covers all theoretical and practical aspects related to applications modelling, simulation, prototyping and testbeds in VANETs. They are computer networked and user reconfigurable. A device can be seen as part of a cloud or operate autonomously. It is a device, consisting of CPU, storage and network access and has the intelligence to perform services both reactive and proactive. It can also be seen as a part of a smart environment, i.e. interact with a physical world consisting of sensors and actuators, displays and computational elements that are connected through a continuous network. However this type of service has severe problems if it is to be adopted in the business area. Some aspects which are not solved for the mobile domain include dependability, device management, provability of intent and information filtering. Due to the increasing computing capabilities and the increasing quality of hard- and software of smartphones, we expect these problems to find solutions in the next years and solicit any original scientific work which addresses one of these unsolved challenges. However, a battery-powered system has a finite operation time. Power supplies using energy- harvesting devices apparently open the door to unlimited and uninterrupted operation. This requires a dedicated power management that predicts available power budgets and aims at maximizing performance metrics for a given budget. Power management encompasses many facets, such as power leakage, radio duty cycle, sampling rates, harvesting efficiency, energy intake prediction, etc. WORKSHOP FORMAT AND TOPICS The focus of this workshop is to provide a platform for discussing intermediate research results and for vivid exchange of ideas. It is also intended to identify required steps and promising future research directions within scope in order to push the penetration power of energy-harvesting sensor networks one step forward. For that purpose, we particularly enencourage preliminary contributions by Ph.D. students in addition to completed work. In addition to paper presentations, there will be a poster and demo session. Online social networks are among the most popular sites on the Web and continue to grow rapidly. Online social networks provide mechanisms for establishing online identities and creating relationships. The resulting social graph provides a network for maintaining social relationships and for locating content, with the potential of changing computer systems and applications, for example, by providing new means to publish and find content as well as new ways to reason about trust. The workshop complements the topics of the main EuroSys conference, since the research issues with online social networks span the topics of distributed computing, databases, and storage systems as well as security and privacy. To achieve similar improvements in mobile networking and related fields, large-scale, and ideally planet-scale, datasets must be collected and made available. This 4th ACM HotPlanet workshop will challenge the community to collect large-scale human mobility traces as well as to propose novel mobility data processing and knowledge discovery techniques, also showcasing demonstrations of innovative realworld technology. Accurate measurements of practical wireless deployments are vital for researchers to evaluate the real-world performance of proposed solutions. In addition to better understanding of systems, experimental wireless network measurements allow for better analytical and simulation models which are often limited by simplified protocol and wireless channel models. As a consequence, the need for experimental wireless network measurements has gained wide recognition in the wireless networking research community. This workshop continues the successful WiNMee series, begun at WiOpt in 2005, and is intended to bring together researchers in the field of experimental wireless networking and serve as a forum for discussing advances and challenges in experimental wireless network measurements. We seek novel papers that advance the understanding of wireless networks through testbed measurements or field experiments.
