This area of research is in its early stages and there is still much to be done in order to realize the vision of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). The aim of vehicular communication systems, and thus ITS, is to improve traffic safety, protect environment by reducing traffic congestion and fuel consumption, and enable a plethora of new applications such as mobile infotainment and location-based services for mobile users. To facilitate both safety and non-safety applications, the integration of communications and computing technologies into vehicular and transportation systems becomes a must. These result in various types of cooperative vehicular communications and networks: intra-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I), vehicle-to-roadside (V2R), and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications. While many conferences and workshops provide a venue to present and discuss vehicular communication, network protocols and solutions, only few research works addressed issues related to measurements, modeling and experimentations in such systems. So, the primary objective of the WVCN workshop will be to discuss the issues related to these themes. The focus of this workshop is to serve as a forum to share new ideas/experiences in all experimental, measurement and modeling aspects of vehicular communications and networks, and facilitate discussions of key unresolved challenges in this area. Submitted papers should be original and previously unpublished. In WNR some or all of the devices are expected to have memory and reasoning capabilities, which allow them to use the input coming from other devices, the environment and their history to select the best behaviour to assume according to mission objectives. Therefore, machine learning and cognitive networks concepts and algorithms would greatly contribute to WNR theory and algorithms. This special issue aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the theory, algorithms and applications of wireless networked robotics. Original, unpublished contributions are solicited in all aspects of this discipline. Handheld electronics, location devices, telecommunications networks, and a wide assortment of tags and sensors are constantly producing a rich stream of data reflecting various aspects of urban life. For urban planners and designers, these accumulations of digital traces are valuable sources of data in capturing the pulse of the city in an astonishing degree of temporal and spatial detail. Yet this condition of the hybrid city - which operates simultaneously in the digital and physical realms - also poses difficult questions about privacy, scale, and design, among many others. These questions must be addressed as we move toward achieving an augmented, fine-grained understanding of how the city functions - socially, economically and yes, even psychologically. This special issue aims to advance understanding of research challenges and opportunities in applying the pervasive computing paradigm to urban spaces. We are seeking multi-disciplinary contributions that reveal interesting aspects about urban life and exploit the digital traces to create novel urban applications that benefit citizens, urban planners, and policy makers. In this special issue, we are seeking high quality papers reporting original research results on Pervasive Urban Applications with a preference for works including evaluation studies based on empirical data of actual urban environments. Recently, we have been also observing that the communication distance between transmitters and receivers shrinks in many commercial applications. This includes sensor/RFID networks, WiFi and near field communication (NFC) devices. Such shortened distance is mostly caused by the high volume of data demand of users. One other reason is that the modern communications is not any more for human-to-human (H2H) information exchange only but also for machine-to-machine (M2M) or machine-to-human (M2H). The inter-machine distance will be gradually decreasing in many upcoming applications. This trend adds complexity to the communication protocols with very high node density and unpredictable interference in particular in wireless networks. The machine in M2M or M2H refers to various devices from remote metering modules to vehicles or small networked robots with communication functions embedded. M2M applications and use cases currently under consideration by ETSI, 3GPP, 3GPP2 and IEEE are mainly focused on stationary nodes (machines) or at least control of node mobility is out of scope of M2M applications. However, the controllable node mobility willconstitute a core part of M2M communications. Robotic networks will belong to this class of M2M, where the position of nodes can be changed to meet the needs of M2M applications. Independently, in the automatic control and robotics community, there has been special interest in connecting multiple robots for effectively achieving the common mission of a group of autonomous robots. This area is known as networked robotics. The main background of this approach is that connecting robots with less intelligence would be more beneficial than a single isolated robot with full intelligence. In particular, there have been a group of researchers focusing on the behaviours of small animals to mimic their grouping patterns such as group navigation and communications. This special issue is dedicated to fundamentals and applications in the machine and robotic networks. The main emphasis is to introduce and to open new research horizon to the networking researchers. Those who are currently investigating protocols for inter-machine data exchange or designing a group of networked machines (including robots) are potential authors for this special issue. The comprehensive survey and forecasting of this inter-disciplinary area with deep insight on research challenges and business opportunities are also seriously considered. However, realistic evaluations in real-world deployments are challenging and very time consuming. Furthermore, it lacks of adequate tools. These are reasons for prior work to oversimplify, causing imprecise results. With recent advances in simulator tools as well as an increasing number of testbeds the next step in evaluating energy efficiency is now feasible: realistic evaluations of energy efficiency. NovaEnEv brings together researchers interested in a more realistic evaluation of energy efficiency and energy consumption of architectures, protocols, and applications in wireless networks. NovaEnEv serves as a forum to share ideas how to perform realistic evaluations and to facilitate discussions of unresolved challenges in this area. Please provide original, previously unpublished papers addressing realistic evaluations with focus on energy efficiency, energy consumption, and energy usage characteristics. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Realistic design and evaluation of energy efficient protocols in wireless ad-hoc and sensor networks - Energy-aware protocols and applications - Testbeds with focus on energy evaluation - Usage of testbeds to measure energy consumption in real-world deployments - Energy measurement methodologies and concepts - Integration of energy measurements into evaluations - Comparison of simulative vs. testbed evaluations - Modeling and validation of energy models - Hardware profiling - Experiences and lessons learned from real-world evaluations Contribution format: The authors are encouraged to submit full papers describing original, previously unpublished, complete research, not currently under review by another conference or journal, addressing state-of-the-art research and development. Handheld electronics, location devices, telecommunications networks, and a wide assortment of tags and sensors are constantly producing a rich stream of data reflecting various aspects of urban life. For urban planners and designers, these accumulations of digital traces are valuable sources of data in capturing the pulse of the city in an astonishing degree of temporal and spatial detail. Yet this condition of the hybrid city - which operates simultaneously in the digital and physical realms - also poses difficult questions about privacy, scale, and design, among many others. These questions must be addressed as we move toward achieving an augmented, fine-grained understanding of how the city functions - socially, economically and yes, even psychologically. This special issue aims to advance understanding of research challenges and opportunities in applying the pervasive computing paradigm to urban spaces. We are seeking multi-disciplinary contributions that reveal interesting aspects about urban life and exploit the digital traces to create novel urban applications that benefit citizens, urban planners, and policy makers. In this special issue, we are seeking high quality papers reporting original research results on Pervasive Urban Applications with a preference for works including evaluation studies based on empirical data of actual urban environments. Human mobility makes it possible for such key components to interact, promoting cooperation and sharing of content, services and resources. Smartphones, tablet PCs, and other personal devices act as mobile computing elements able to gather information about the surrounding environment according to the mobility of users. In other situations these devices operate as mobile nodes of the computing and/or networking infrastructure, where interaction and communication occur opportunistically. The goal of PerMoby is to explore the impact of human mobility on the achievement of the pervasive computing vision. The focus is on pervasive applications, systems, and protocols where mobility plays an active role in achieving the end goals. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of human-centric applications and systems are solicited. Papers describing prototype implementations and deployment of such applications and systems are particularly welcome. The submission of papers on controversial issues is also encouraged. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - pervasive systems and applications based on (or influenced by) human mobility - mobile phone sensing applications and systems - opportunistic and participatory sensing, and anything in between - opportunistic computing - pervasive systems with humans in the loop - wearable sensing systems - mobility models - distributed computing approaches that rely on human mobility - impact of human mobility on wireless communication - green pervasive applications that leverage human mobility - mobility aware protocols - opportunistic networking PAPER SUBMISSION Papers should contain original material and should not be previously published or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. The events that took place on 11 September 2001 have brought to the forefront the unique challenges that occur during a crisis, which require effective sensing, communications and decision making with demanding time constraints in highly dynamic environments. Pervasive systems address these requirements by providing decision support to rescuers and evacuees, guaranteeing communications and collecting information that is vital for planning and organising the emergency operation. This workshop focuses on pervasive networked sensing and decision making, both wired and wireless, geared towards emergency management. Networks increasingly rely on Content-Distribution Networks (CDNs) to deliver popular services like YouTube, Deezer, Spotify and MegaUpload to an ever growing user population. Moreover, more and more users are gaining access to the network via smart mobile devices equipped with multiple wireless and wired interfaces, capable of storing a huge amount of data and running all kinds of network services. Network connectivity is thus increasingly heterogeneous, of variable quality and intermittent. In view of these trends, network providers and vendors are seeking to develop a more flexible network infrastructure, natively incorporating in-network storage, mobility, multi-path forwarding, and multi-homing. In particular, the concept of name-oriented networking (also referred to as content-centric or information-centric networking) is taking center stage in recent research on the architecture of the future Internet. Instead of host-to-host communication, as in the current Internet architecture, a name-oriented network architecture makes named data a first class entity. It cares about which data to fetch instead of which host to reach, using data names to retrieve content instead of addresses of data containers. This basic idea has spawned a number of network architecture proposals that share common principles, including in-network storage, multi-path data forwarding, multiparty communication, mobility support and tolerance of intermittent connectivity, but differ, sometimes fundamentally, in the way they would be achieved. The objective of the workshop is to present original work on emerging design choices within the scope of name-oriented networking enabling a reasoned comparison of their respective advantages and more clearly identifying the issues and solutions that transcend these differences. We solicit submissions of original work pertaining to the design, development, performance evaluation and analysis of network architectures centered on named data. As a result, there will be a strong demand for wireless communications and networking to provide information as well as onboard entertainment services to passengers and driver. Vehicular communication is expected to implement a variety of wired and wireless technologies for Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Roadside (V2R) communications. In Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) for V2V systems, communication may experience serious deterioration due to the lack of accurate channel state information and advanced radio-resource-allocation schemes to assign wireless resources to high-speed vehicles. Moreover, communication among high-speed vehicles through cellular communication networks causes frequent handovers and drop-offs resulting in degradation in overall system performance. This motivates researchers to design innovative resource allocation techniques and robust, as well as, fast handover schemes for dynamically changing topologies of VANETs. In VANETs for V2V communications, trust, security, privacy, and reliable routing are major concerns since the network topology changes constantly. Furthermore, physical layer design issues for wireless communications in high-speed mobile environments are also of vital importance to realize its full potential for ITS. All in all, vehicular communications with dynamically changing topologies is a demanding research topic. Increased bandwidth may be achieved by developing efficient strategies for spectrum management. The cognitive radio concept proposes to push efficiency in spectrum access and resource allocation beyond its traditional limits, by introducing spectrum sharing, coexistence, and cooperation among heterogeneous wireless networks. This approach has been worldwide recognized by standardization and regulation bodies, and a number of wireless technologies could benefit from it. Examples abound. WiFi networks could operate in other portions of the spectrum than the traditional ones thus avoiding the already overcrowded ISM bands. Sensor networks deployed in factories or highly interfered environments could adaptively select the frequency bands that are less used by other nearby wireless devices and allow reliable data transfer. Communications systems using OFDM could resort to non-contiguous carriers usage for dynamic spectrum access, thus favoring coexistence with other technologies while still providing high data rates. Important technical challenges still need to be overcome, however, in order to achieve successful coexistence and cooperation among heterogeneous systems. Open research issues cover a wide range of system aspects, from the hardware component up to network layer design. Technical, economical, and regulatory challenges need to be addressed as well. In order to compel the cognitive networking vision, experts in various aspects of wireless design must come together for a joint effort towards system level optimization. The objective of this special issue is to present a collection of high-quality papers that report the latest research advances in the design and implementation of cognitive networking, as well as survey papers on the major challenges and possible solutions that lead the path to real-world cognitive radio systems. Wireless networking affects a number of fields, including healthcare, environmental, home appliances, education, military applications, among others. In general, designing, developing and testing of an efficient wireless network protocol is a great challenge for the researchers in these areas. Moreover, the development of an application specific protocol in any of these fields depends on various factors including the security, miniaturization, application constraints, hardware constraints, and energy requirements. The traditional trend in wireless network protocol design and development is towards maximization of the performance observed by the end-user, in terms of perceived throughput, delay, QoS, etc. Nevertheless, the rate of advances in battery technology continues to lag behind that of semiconductor technology, which is still well predicted by the celebrated Moore’s law. This imbalance in the rate of advances creates a gap between the energy a wireless network needs to operate and the battery capacity that powers its nodes. Hence, the requirement of Energy-Efficiency appears as an extremely important property of new protocols for wireless networks with battery-powered mobile nodes. Moreover, Energy-Efficiency is the tool to realize the vision of green wireless networks, which are deemed important these days due to the increasing share of wireless systems of the total energy expended in communications and networking systems. Energy-awareness contributes to achieving the task of energy-efficiency, as it provides the ability to networking protocols to adapt their operation according to the energy reserves of the network nodes and thus increase the energy-efficiency of a system. The objective of this special issue is to report state-of-the art results in energy-aware wireless networking protocols by welcoming contributions originating from both academic and industrial research. Soon, it was realized that this network organization leads to rapid energy exhaustion of sensors around the base station since these nodes should relay all the traffic destined for the base station. In addition, the passive nature of static sensors which can only sense and are unable to move is not always helpful in target-tracking scenarios or in cases where real-time action is necessary for handling emergency situations. Apparently, a reactive (dynamic) behavior from these networks would be effective for dealing with a number of changing operational conditions (e.g. node failures, energy exhaustion in some nodes) or with real-time events. This Special Issue will focus on all forms of reactive behavior that can be incorporated in the functionality of a Wireless Sensor Network and will also identify new possibilities, opportunities and challenges deriving from this new paradigm. IPSN brings together researchers from academia, industry, and government to present and discuss recent advances in both theoretical and experimental research. Its scope includes signal and image processing, information and coding theory, databases and information management, distributed algorithms, networks and protocols, wireless communications, collaborative objects and the Internet of Things, machine learning, and embedded systems design. IPSN is part of the Cyber-Physical Systems Week (CPS Week), which will bring together other leading CPS conferences including International Conference on Hybrid Systems (HSCC'12), International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems (ICCPS'12), and IEEE Real-Time and Embedded Technology and Applications Symposium (RTAS'12). The conference features two interleaved tracks, the Information Processing (IP) track, and the Sensor Platforms, Tools and Design Methods (SPOTS) track. Authors should carefully review the intended foci of these two tracks to decide which track is better suited for their work, and they are encouraged to contact program chairs with questions or clarifications. As an example of the different foci, results focused on the analysis and processing aspects of data collected from deployments should be submitted to the IP track, while details on the hardware and software platforms and tools used in the deployment should be submitted to SPOTS. The Information Processing (IP) track focuses on algorithms, theory, and systems for information processing using networks of embedded sensors. (Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message) C A L L F O R P A P E R S ============================= Future Generation Computer Systems (FGCS) http://www.elsevier.com/locate/future Special Issue on "Management of Cloud Systems" The vision of Cloud computing is becoming a reality because of the recent advances in several significant computer and communications research areas, spanning from grid/virtualization/utility computing to Web 2.0 and Service Oriented Computing (SOC). At the current stage, after the initial hype of enthusiasm, several ongoing research efforts are deeply focusing on the open management aspects of the Cloud, such as interoperability, scalability, reliability, power management, and confidentiality/auditability, with the final goal to make Cloud technologies and services more mature so to enable and boost a more widespread industrial uptake of Cloud systems. Despite several recent provisioning of Cloud systems, it is still unclear whether current solutions can withstand the abrupt and unpredictably changes imposed by the emergent Cloud application scenarios, where services de/activation and the whole software stacks (from the kernel upward) have to scale up and down fast by exploiting highly distributed and heterogeneous virtualized resources. The mission of this Special Issue is to put on the foreground all the above issues and to disseminate the latest research result in this emergent research area, by providing a fresh snapshot of the current state-of-the-art in management of Cloud systems. Along that direction, this special issue will collect a mix of extended and updated versions of papers recently presented at the international Workshop on Management of Cloud Systems (MoCS 2011), and of other papers submitted from this open call. In particular, all the authors of papers accepted for inclusion in the MoCS11 proceedings are invited to submit extended versions of their workshop papers; in addition, we are asking for high-quality papers (from open call) reporting original research results. Contributions should present practical experiences of system design/prototy- ping/deployment related to topics that include, but are not limited to: * Novel adaptive management solutions for scalable, maintainable, cost- effective Cloud provision, at all software stack layers; * New methods and tools able to identify and enforce optimal trade-offs between performance, energy consumption, safety, and security; * New models and paradigms for the management of Cloud services at the host level and within/between data centers (intra-/inter-domain); * Emerging standards for interoperability (resource virtualization, specific computing interfaces, etc.), also between public and private Clouds; * Experimentation testbeds, field trials and empirical evaluations, and measurement studies; * Analytical and simulation models and tools to measure systems ability to scale and to achieve relevant energy savings. HotMobile's small workshop format makes it ideal for presenting and discussing new directions or controversial approaches. We solicit submissions of position papers that focus primarily on applications and systems and that propose new directions of research, advocate non-traditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate controversy and discussion. We particularly look for position papers containing highly original ideas in the following topic areas, although papers describing other challenges unique to or exacerbated by mobility are also welcome: • Operating system and distributed system support for mobile computing • Coordination, aggregation, and spontaneous interaction of mobile devices • Novel applications, environments, and devices supporting mobility • HCI issues related to mobile computing • Security and privacy of mobile computing • Management, configuration, and deployment of systems supporting mobility Submissions describing new lower-level technologies are welcome if they focus on how the technology is being used or integrated into a system or application. HotMobile 2012 will be a highly interactive workshop. Submissions will be judged based upon originality, technical merit, topical relevance, and likelihood of leading to insightful discussion at the workshop. Presentation at HotMobile is a good way to get early feedback on research ideas that are a year or more from submission as a full conference paper to the ACM MobiSys conference or other high-quality conferences. Submitting a full-length paper on the same topic to MobiSys in less than a year is unlikely to involve a sufficient increment of work and maturity of ideas. As is customary, papers must not have been published elsewhere and may not be simultaneously under submission at another venue. Papers accompanied by nondisclosure agreement forms are not acceptable and will be returned to the author(s) unread. As customary with the scientific peer review process, submissions will be handled as confidential material during the review. Submissions should contain 6 or fewer U.S. letter pages in PDF format, including all references, figures and tables. The twenty-year history of IWQoS has established it as a highly reputable forum to present novel ideas on all research subjects related to the topic. While QoS research for future generations of wired and wireless networks continues to attract much interest, recent exploration of data centers, virtualization, cloud computing, cloud services, industrial communication, and “green” computing has motivated a new wave of research interest in QoS and its related metrics such as Quality of Experience (QoE) and Quality of Protection (QoP). The scope of IWQoS 2010 covers both theoretical and experimental research on QoS, QoE, QoP and related issues such as survivability, availability, reliability, security, privacy, pricing, resource provisioning and management, user experience, and system performance guarantees. Topics of interest include QoS issues in (but not limited to) the following areas: * Quality of cloud services and cloud computing * Quality of protection, quality experience, security and privacy * System dependability, availability; resilience and robustness to faults and security attacks * Scheduling, resource management, queue management, admission control; * Traffic engineering approaches and tools for provisioning and evaluation * Quality evaluation metrics and methodologies; application-aware * QoS parsing, identification and control * Measurement, evaluation, adaptation and verification * Network operations, pricing and billing, network and service management * Architectures and protocols for IP, overlay and peer-to-peer networks; optical networks, wireless, ad hoc, mesh, and sensor networks * Energy awareness in communication systems * Design for the Future Internet PAPER SUBMISSION GUIDELINES ------------------------------------------------ IWQoS invites submission of manuscripts with original research results that have not been previously published or that are not currently under review by another conference or journal. Submissions will be judged based on originality, significance, interest, clarity, relevance, and correctness. Paper submissions should be no longer than 9 single-spaced, double-column pages with font-size of 10. Papers must be submitted electronically as PDF files through the EDAS system. All submitted papers will be subject to peer reviews by Technical Program Committee members and other experts in the field. IWQoS aims at rapid dissemination of research results. For fast turnaround in the review process, a short review and publication cycle is designed, with the submission deadline as close to the workshop as the publisher allows. The proceedings will be published in IEEE Xplore and EI indexed. However, IEEE reserves the right to exclude a paper from distribution after the conference (e.g., removal from IEEE Xplore) if the paper is not presented at the conference.
