As a result, there will be a strong demand for wireless communications and networking to provide information as well as onboard entertainment services to passengers and driver. Vehicular communication is expected to implement a variety of wired and wireless technologies for Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Roadside (V2R) communications. In Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs) for V2V systems, communication may experience serious deterioration due to the lack of accurate channel state information and advanced radio-resource-allocation schemes to assign wireless resources to high-speed vehicles. Moreover, communication among high-speed vehicles through cellular communication networks causes frequent handovers and drop-offs resulting in degradation in overall system performance. This motivates researchers to design innovative resource allocation techniques and robust, as well as, fast handover schemes for dynamically changing topologies of VANETs. In VANETs for V2V communications, trust, security, privacy, and reliable routing are major concerns since the network topology changes constantly. Furthermore, physical layer design issues for wireless communications in high-speed mobile environments are also of vital importance to realize its full potential for ITS. All in all, vehicular communications with dynamically changing topologies is a demanding research topic. The goal of this issue is to bring together the state of the art research contributions that focus on vehicular communications and networking. In recent year, tablet devices and operating systems have gained a prominent spot in the limelight, while the smart phone landscape continues to change with new offerings supporting a variety of sensors, higher resolution and bigger size screens, high definition video recording and playback, and enhanced gaming. Embedded devices like televisions, TV set top boxes, and game consoles have grown beyond their original functionality to home multimedia systems supporting enhanced networking (e.g. IP TV and DNLA), and novel user interaction through 3D displays, and movement detection based controllers. The pervasiveness of such mobile and embedded devices has given rise to a variety of novel applications, such as social web applications, enhanced shopping applications/environments, ad-hoc gaming, context-aware collaborative computing,participatory sensing, etc. Access to cloud computing infrastructures further enhances the capabilities of these devices offering additional opportunities for innovative applications and uses. Despite these successes, software development for such devices and platforms remains largely ad hoc, while interoperability among applications, devices and platforms is largely elusive. Middleware has a key role to play in overcoming these problems. However, it still unclear what are the appropriate middleware abstractions and supporting infrastructures necessary for such applications. The resource constrained nature and mobility of such devices place unique requirements for middleware and necessitate the exploration of novel programming abstractions, and supporting services, while capabilities like location and context-awareness open new avenues for radical approaches in their development. Submission implies that at least one of the authors will register and present the paper. Please submit your paper in PDF at http:/www.cis.strath.ac.uk/external/m-mpac2011/openconf/ Papers should present a view of the state of the art in a particular sub-problem area, identify specific middleware challenges, and suggest potential avenues for exploration by proposing models, abstractions and infrastructure components addressing these challenges. Therefore, new approaches to information security, availability protection, and privacy management are required to be tightly integrated into IT and communication systems. The CISS Symposium will address all aspects of modeling, design, implementation, deployment, and management of computer/network security algorithms, protocols, services, architectures, and systems. In WNR some or all of the devices are expected to have memory and reasoning capabilities, which allow them to use the input coming from other devices, the environment and their history to select the best behaviour to assume according to mission objectives. This special issue aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the theory, algorithms and applications of wireless networked robotics. Original, unpublished contributions are solicited in all aspects of this discipline. (Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message) C A L L F O R P A P E R S ============================= Future Generation Computer Systems (FGCS) http://www.elsevier.com/locate/future Special Issue on "Management of Cloud Systems" The vision of Cloud computing is becoming a reality because of the recent advances in several significant computer and communications research areas, spanning from grid/virtualization/utility computing to Web 2.0 and Service Oriented Computing (SOC). At the current stage, after the initial hype of enthusiasm, several ongoing research efforts are deeply focusing on the open management aspects of the Cloud, such as interoperability, scalability, reliability, power management, and confidentiality/auditability, with the final goal to make Cloud technologies and services more mature so to enable and boost a more widespread industrial uptake of Cloud systems. Despite several recent provisioning of Cloud systems, it is still unclear whether current solutions can withstand the abrupt and unpredictably changes imposed by the emergent Cloud application scenarios, where services de/activation and the whole software stacks (from the kernel upward) have to scale up and down fast by exploiting highly distributed and heterogeneous virtualized resources. The mission of this Special Issue is to put on the foreground all the above issues and to disseminate the latest research result in this emergent research area, by providing a fresh snapshot of the current state-of-the-art in management of Cloud systems. Along that direction, this special issue will collect a mix of extended and updated versions of papers recently presented at the international Workshop on Management of Cloud Systems (MoCS 2011), and of other papers submitted from this open call. In particular, all the authors of papers accepted for inclusion in the MoCS11 proceedings are invited to submit extended versions of their workshop papers; in addition, we are asking for high-quality papers (from open call) reporting original research results. It has also brought many challenges for the communication and networking community to address. On one hand we see present day mobile devices are capable of providing many services that required several devices before. For example, most cell phones nowadays provide high speed data access, still and video cameras, PDA functionality, etc. These advances in device sophistication and service offerings, including wireless hotspots, have made a difference in the way we communicate. With increased user mobility and user's desire to always be connected, we have seen a growing interest in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Body Area Networks (BANs). These networks can be tuned and applied meaningfully for individual users and their requirements. On the other hand the Internet has changed our way of interacting dramatically. These two major communication areas are having an in-depth influence on the way we communicate; it is worth considering them 'together' as the future communication vehicle. Personalized Networks is one such future oriented concept where we seek to bring BANs, PANs, WLAN, sensor networks, ad hoc networks, home networks, vehicular networks and the Internet together onto one platform under one broader vision of future (4G) communication networks and the Internet of Your Things. The idea is to enable continuous and seamless connectivity of all the personal devices of a user, information sources, and network enabled controllers in an unobtrusive way, regardless of where these entities are located - be they local or remote. It is a microcosm of the persons themselves with their associated accessories somewhere on the Internet. It is equivalent to the Internet presence that has become a prominent concept in the last decade. This advanced overlay network is strongly person oriented and must be ad hoc, intelligent and must behave as a user-friendly virtual intelligent personal assistant to its owner. It is a personal distributed environment, global in scope that can co-exist on the present day Internet with its active participation. Such a platform enables many new applications, especially for users with rapidly changing communication demands that often operate in various contexts simultaneously. It can also provide the much needed user-friendliness to many services of today. There are numerous issues which are challenging to the communication network community in realizing a Personalized Network. Most of them arise from the lack of current technology to deal in a transparent way with the dynamic and mobile nature of the entities, the unpredictable topology of the network, the power constraints of the mobile devices, and the heterogeneity of the networking and link-level technologies. Therefore, creating a Personalized Network yields new architectures, protocols, algorithms, platforms, middleware, etc. They take care of addressing, routing, resource and service discovery, the self-organization of the network, the localization of the devices/person, the complex security and privacy requirements, the offering of context aware services and service management. Many of these issues, ventured upon earlier under various mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) and mobile network research initiatives, need to be reconsidered in this case. These technologies have to meet strict requirements with respect to user perception, viable business models, usage of communication bandwidth, protocol complexity, robustness, availability of links and infrastructure, dependability and trust. Scope of the submission We seek original contributions which are aimed at finding solutions to the problems that are outlined above towards realization of a Personalized Network. We have identified the following major topics under which we try to categorize the submissions. Personalized Networks is a concrete vision of the future networks, yet very current, in the field of communications. It attracts researchers from both wired and wireless domains. Aims and Scope: Unmanned systems are increasingly used in a large number of contexts to support humans in dangerous and difficult-to-reach environments, e.g. ground-based robotics, aerial sensor systems, space and underwater applications. In order to fulfill challenging tasks, visionary scenarios foresee unmanned vehicles to be organized in networked teams and even swarms. The corresponding wireless networks must provide highly reliable and delay-tolerant control links for the management of the behavior of the unmanned vehicles' behavior as well as data links to reliably transfer telemetry and sensor data respectively. At the same time, unmanned vehicles offer the capability to provide ad-hoc wireless networks, for example to compensate network outages in case of public events and large scale incidents. The successful first workshop at GLOBECOM 2010 focused mainly on unmanned aerial vehicles (www.wi-uav.org). This year's workshop addresses any kind of unmanned autonomous systems. The workshop aims to discuss most recent results of various international research initiatives on new communications networks enabling the efficient operation of teams of unmanned vehicles/systems operating on the ground, in the air, underwater and in space scenarios. The combination of unique features of automotive applications and unique features of the automotive networking leads to many interesting research areas. The wireless networking between vehicles and with infrastructure has different characteristics from other conventional wireless networking problems. For example, due to rapidly-changing topology as vehicles move around, there are resemblances to ad hoc networking scenarios. However, the constraints and optimizations are very different. Power efficiency is not as important for vehicle communications as it is for traditional ad hoc networking. Vehicles in general are also constrained to move within roads (and within lanes most of the time). Automotive applications also demand stringent communications performance requirements that are not seen in conventional wireless networks. > The purpose of this special issue is to showcase the variety of research being conducted in automotive networking, ITS and applications to survey and collect the state-of-the-art in this emerging field. To maximize resource utilization and, at the same time, provide satisfying performance to all users, application layer knowledge is needed. As different resource allocation and adaptation mechanisms already exist in MAC, transport and application layer, an integral consideration of the problem space is required. Handheld electronics, location devices, telecommunication networks, and a wide assortment of tags and sensors are constantly producing a rich stream of data reflecting various aspects of urban life. For urban planners and designers, these accumulations of digital traces are valuable sources of data in capturing the pulse of the city in an astonishing degree of temporal and spatial detail. Yet this condition of the hybrid city - which operates simultaneously in the digital and physical realms - also poses difficult questions about privacy, scale, and design, among many others. These questions must be addressed as we move toward achieving an augmented, fine-grained understanding of how the city functions - socially,economically and yes, even psychologically.This special issue aims to advance understanding of research challenges and opportunities in applying the pervasive computing paradigm to urban spaces. We are seeking multi-disciplinary contributions that reveal interesting aspects about urban life and exploit the digital traces to create novel urban applications that benefit citizens, urban planners, and policy makers.In this special issue, we are seeking high quality papers reporting original research results on Pervasive Urban Applications with a preference for works including evaluation studies based on empirical data of actual urban environments. Relevant topics include (but are not limited to): - Pervasive computing applications for urban planning and design - Mining of data collected from urban networks e.g. transportation, energy - Urban mobility and geo-localization - Multi-source urban information integration - Real-time urban information processing - Knowledge representation and reasoning on city data - Case studies and applications of mixed urban sensing and mining - Analysis of social networks in urban space - Middleware for mobile urban computing - Context-aware systems for urban space - Pervasive urban applications for smart cities - Intelligent urban transportation systems - Empirical evaluation of pervasive urban applications - Wireless sensor networks, and social network sensing for pervasive urban applications - Security, privacy, reputation, and trust issues in urban computing - Impact of pervasive technologies in urban space e.g. social, economical, and psychological. **Submission process** All submissions must be prepared according to the Guide for Authors as published in the Journal website at http://www.ees.elsevier.com/pmc/. All contributions must not have been previously published or be under consideration for publication elsewhere. With the variety of services one can find in today's Internet, the requirements in rate, data volume and latency differ strongly. To maximize resource utilization and, at the same time, provide satisfying performance to all users, application layer knowledge is needed. As different resource allocation and adaptation mechanisms already exist in MAC, transport and application layer, an integral consideration of the problem space is required. In wireless networks, the problem is particularly relevant due to the inherently limited resources, which render a simple "throwing bandwidth at the problem" solution impossible. Because large over-provisioning factors are economically unfeasibly, similar questions on capacity sharing also arise in fixed access networks, such as high bandwidth passive optical networks or cable networks. The objective of this workshop is to bring together stakeholders of mobile and fixed access networks, the classic Internet world and of the application and transport community. We solicit presentations on the state-of-the-art, results of ongoing research, open issues, trends and new ideas. We are especially looking forward to (possibly provocative) visionary presentations to foster a lively discussion about how to face the upcoming challenges in the future mobile Internet. With the help of the U-Health smart home, doctors, nurses and other health-related personnel do not need being physically close to the patients and reversely reducing therefore the load on hospitals and specialized institutions while ensuring the safety of the patients.____ While this concept had some difficulties to be fully realized, in recent years, tremendous advances in low-power electronics, nano/bio sensor technologies along with development of wired and wireless network technologies are facilitating the development of such solutions which are more and more requested by our societies. The proliferation and deployment of radio access networks such as Wireless WANs, Wireless LANs, Wireless PANs, ad hoc networks, and wireless sensor networks with distinguishing characteristics of data rate, coverage range, power, mobility, and prices will clearly lead to a need for seamless and ubiquitous access across these various networks. Such an integrated heterogeneous environment enables a user to access a particular network depending upon the application needs and the types of radio access networks (RANs) available. The heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks, on the other hand, provide unlimited mobility and greater flexibility but introduce a number of challenges due to dynamic network topology. The design of efficient and scalable protocols for existing multi-hop wireless and mobile networks such as wireless and mobile ad hoc networks continue to pose challenges at all the layers of networking stack. Therefore, it is necessary to aim at heterogeneous architectures and services that together provide seamless integration of single-hop as well as multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks. The aim of this workshop is to bring together the research community in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the latest research and future research directions in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks. We are seeking original and previously unpublished research papers addressing theoretical and application issues in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless mobile networks. These applications, which are based on high-level commands and in order to accomplish some specific tasks, reveal new challenges regarding mechanic design, portability, acceptability, power support, control theory, etc. In addition to portability and low-power systems, which are vital challenges that limit substantially any successful robotic application, network paradigms should also take into account issues related to cost, scalability and security. This workshop will highlight the overlapping of these two domains of autonomous systems and network technologies devoted for different applications. Issues related to concepts, new technologies, and protocols will elicit particular attention. Most of this data is gathered by governmental and defence agencies. Satellites are used to capture movement and transport while 'dataveillance' captures people's use of credit card, mobile phone, and loyalty card information. CCTVs are also ubiquitous. More recently, applications to gather data using people's mobile phones as a sensor in the urban space have appeared and contribute to this pool of urban data. This unprecedented bottom-up approach achieves collaborative collection of large quantities of data. 'Participatory Urbanism' sees a shift in mobile device usage - from communication tool to networked mobile personal measurement instrument. Through this, individual citizens can become more proactive in their involvement with their city, neighborhood, and urban self-reflexivity. Given this growing pool of data of the urban space, there is a question on how the data can be used fruitfully and sensibly to better understand sociality and to inform future planning of our urban environment. Objectives ---------- This workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss and explore research challenges and opportunities in social computing in urban spaces. We are seeking multi-disciplinary contributions that reveal interesting aspects about urban social life and exploit the sensory data as well as digital traces (e.g. mobile phone data, online social network data, transportation traces) to create novel urban social applications that benefit citizens, urban planners, and policy makers. These PSNs have special requirements, when compared to regular networks. The main concerns in establishing public safety networks are their facility to be deployed rapidly and their survivability. Other important characteristics of this kind of network is that their requirements may change radically, depending on the nature of the particular disaster. These networks are always mission critical and once deployed, PSNs have to be reliable since lives may depend on them. Recent global disasters have dramatically demonstrated that network structures can be severely affected, either directly by the disaster itself (where the existing infrastructure is damaged or destroyed) or by the following public reaction (overloaded networks caused by the need to communicate with friends and family). “Historically, major disasters are the most intense generators of telecommunications traffic”. For these reasons, the regular public networks alone are often not enough to support rescue and relief operations on their own. In addition to the stated problems of equipment failures and lack of connectivity, it must be understood that various different communication technologies are currently used for public safety communication, and it is common to find that each first responder group favours their own preferred technology. For example, TETRA, Analogue Radio Networks or GSM are used for voice communication, while data transmission for localisation, sensor information transfer and video streaming are currently not widely used in public safety. Local public safety agencies also have to communicate more and more with complimentary agencies such as other first responders, law enforcement groups, hospitals and even military authorities. As a direct consequence of the differing technologies in use at the same time PSNs are often not interoperable, which may represent a problem in the case of a catastrophe. Unfortunately existing communications networks are not always reliable during incidents or dangerous interventions. The deployment of new, ad hoc, dedicated, networks for Public Safety has been a long held dream, but technical, cost and management concerns create real problems. Finally, the scope of possible sensor use in PSNs is broad; it can include intrusion detection, where one can use different types of sensors to recognise potential hazard situations (e.g. by means of the detection and tracking of abnormal behaviours using Computer Vision-based techniques), to the integration of different technologies used by the intervention teams in the advent of a catastrophe. Sensors can also be used during and after incidents to measure the physical environment and report from a distance in areas that are too dangerous for direct human monitoring.
