It has also brought many challenges for the communication and networking community to address. On one hand we see present day mobile devices are capable of providing many services that required several devices before. For example, most cell phones nowadays provide high speed data access, still and video cameras, PDA functionality, etc. These advances in device sophistication and service offerings, including wireless hotspots, have made a difference in the way we communicate. With increased user mobility and user's desire to always be connected, we have seen a growing interest in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Body Area Networks (BANs). These networks can be tuned and applied meaningfully for individual users and their requirements. On the other hand the Internet has changed our way of interacting dramatically. These two major communication areas are having an in-depth influence on the way we communicate; it is worth considering them 'together' as the future communication vehicle. > Personalized Networks is one such future oriented concept where we seek to bring BANs, PANs, WLAN, sensor networks, ad hoc networks, home networks, vehicular networks and the Internet together onto one platform under one broader vision of future (4G) communication networks and the Internet of Your Things. The idea is to enable continuous and seamless connectivity of all the personal devices of a user, information sources, and network enabled controllers in an unobtrusive way, regardless of where these entities are located - be they local or remote. It is a microcosm of the persons themselves with their associated accessories somewhere on the Internet. It is equivalent to the Internet presence that has become a prominent concept in the last decade. This advanced overlay network is strongly person oriented and must be ad hoc, intelligent and must behave as a user-friendly virtual intelligent personal assistant to its owner. It is a personal distributed environment, global in scope that can co-exist on the present day Internet with its active participation. Such a platform enables many new applications, especially for users with rapidly changing communication demands that often operate in various contexts simultaneously. It can also provide the much needed user-friendliness to many services of today. > There are numerous issues which are challenging to the communication network community in realizing a Personalized Network. Most of them arise from the lack of current technology to deal in a transparent way with the dynamic and mobile nature of the entities, the unpredictable topology of the network, the power constraints of the mobile devices, and the heterogeneity of the networking and link-level technologies. Therefore, creating a Personalized Network yields new architectures, protocols, algorithms, platforms, middleware, etc. They take care of addressing, routing, resource and service discovery, the self-organization of the network, the localization of the devices/person, the complex security and privacy requirements, the offering of context aware services and service management. Many of these issues, ventured upon earlier under various mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) and mobile network research initiatives, need to be reconsidered in this case. These technologies have to meet strict requirements with respect to user perception, viable business models, usage of communication bandwidth, protocol complexity, robustness, availability of links and infrastructure, dependability and trust. > > Scope of the submission > We seek original contributions which are aimed at finding solutions to the problems that are outlined above towards realization of a Personalized Network. It attracts researchers from both wired and wireless domains. This workshop is an ideal platform to share a vision of where we are heading, interact, and strongly advocate an exciting new avenue for researchers and practitioners in the field of communication. Further, the final program would consist of carefully selected - with at least three peer reviews - and high quality submissions with a large emphasis on new ideas rather than incremental contributions to the field. One of the main purposes of this research field consists in the design and development of = information systems able to support medical professionals both improving = patients' Quality of Life and reducing medical errors and hospitalization costs. Continuous remote monitoring of patient's physiological state and activity patterns, tracking of individual's health-related = activities, smart management of medical records and care professionals activities = are just some examples of system features. The goal of this competition is to encourage students to build systems and prototypes validating their research results, and through the demo, make it more accessible to the wider community. During MobiCom, demos will be judged by an evaluation committee and one will be selected for the Best Demonstration Award. Demos will primarily be judged on originality, execution, and illustration of the core research ideas. Submission Instructions Submit a summary of the proposed demo via email to xizhang(a)ece.tamu.edu. The proposal should be maximum of 3 pages, including figures if needed, and in PDF format only. Please indicate “MobiCom 2011 Demo Submission” as the subject of the email. All submissions will be acknowledged. The summary should include: * The names, affiliations, and email addresses of the authors. * Goals of the demo and the basic idea that it supports. * Equipment to be used for the demo. * Space needed and setup time required. * Additional facilities needed including power and Internet/wireless access. * Indicate a URL with any extra information, if needed. * Indicate whether the demo is eligible for the student demo competition by identifying the lead student(s) and their affiliations. The appearance of new technologies usually comes with a protocol procedure and communication rules that allows data communication while taking profit of this new technology. Recent advances in hardware and communication mediums allow proposing new rules, conventions and data structures which could be used by network devices to communicate across the network. Moreover, devices with higher processing capacity let us include more complex algorithms that can be used by the network device to enhance the communication procedure. Smart communication protocols and algorithms make use of several methods and techniques (such as machine learning techniques, decision making techniques, knowledge representation, network management, network optimization, problem solution techniques, and so on), to communicate the network devices to transfer data between them. They can be used to perceive the network conditions, or the user behavior, in order to dynamically plan, adapt, decide, take the appropriate actions, and learn from the consequences of its actions. The algorithms can make use of the information gathered from the protocol in order to sense the environment, plan actions according to the input, take consciousness of what is happening in the environment, and take the appropriate decisions using a reasoning engine. Goals such as decide which scenario fits best its end-to-end purpose, or environment prediction, can be achieved with smart protocols and algorithms. Moreover, they could learn from the past and ! use this knowledge to improve futur e decisions. In this workshop, researchers are encouraged to submit papers focused on the design, development, analysis or optimization of smart communication protocols or algorithms at any communication layer. Algorithms and protocols based on artificial intelligence techniques for network management, network monitoring, quality of service enhancement, performance optimization and network secure are included in the workshop. We welcome technical papers presenting analytical research, simulations, practical results, position papers addressing the pros and cons of specific proposals, and papers addressing the key problems and solutions. The topics suggested by the conference can be discussed in term of concepts, state of the art, standards, deployments, implementations, running experiments and applications. Soon, it was realized that this network organization leads to rapid energy exhaustion of sensors around the base station since these nodes should relay all the traffic destined for the base station. In addition, the passive nature of static sensors which can only sense and are unable to move is not always helpful in target-tracking scenarios or in cases where real-time action is necessary for handling emergency situations. Apparently, a reactive (dynamic) behavior from these networks would be effective for dealing with a number of changing operational conditions (e.g. node failures, energy exhaustion in some nodes) or with real-time events. These will account for 60% of the population and 80% of the wealth. Hence, the future patterns of energy demand will increasingly be determined by urban networks. Transportation operations, both passenger and freight, typical account for almost 50% of urban energy use. Within this challenging context, Intelligent Transportation Systems provide new and innovative ways for the reduction of transport induced emissions and the facilitation of green urban mobility. The objective of this workshop is to disseminate the best research results from cross-disciplinary researchers working on Intelligent Transportation Systems towards the achievement of greener urban mobility systems. Submission: Submissions of papers related to all aspects of Intelligent Transportation Systems for green urban mobility, including passenger, freight and multimodal transport, are welcome. Both novel theoretical approaches and practical, real world applications will be covered. Although significant advances have been achieved over the last decades in several fields of science and engineering, and especially in the areas of distributed computing, sensing, data collection and internet-connection of large scale object networks, it is mainly the coordination and tight link between computational, virtual and physical resources that will drive the potential of having a pervasive effect in the citizens everyday life, satisfying various needs and also creating new opportunities for the introduction of services that will enhance the Quality of Life of the society as a whole. Research advances in cyber-physical systems promise to transform our world with systems that will far exceed those of today in terms of: effectiveness, adaptability, autonomicity, energy efficiency, precision, reliability, safety, usability, scalability, stability and user-centric applicability. Moreover, recently the Sensor Web concept came into foreground, aiming at combining distributed sensing with the ubiquitous connectivity and accessibility of the web, therefore facilitating the close interaction of digital world with physical world. Cyber-physical systems find direct applicability in a wide range of areas and disciplines, including for instance (but not limited to): a) Smart Grid technologies: that aim at facilitating a reliable and efficient delivery of electricity to consumers using two-way digital communications and security technologies, which allows utility providers and consumers to constantly monitor and control the delivery network as well as electricity consumption for the purpose of energy saving, cost reduction, and reliability enhancement; b) Wireless sensing, monitoring and networking: to enable distributed monitoring systems of numerous smart sensors and actuators, mobile devices, RFIDs, robots etc., which revolutionize a variety of application areas with unprecedented density, fidelity, and scalability of environment instrumentation; c) Vehicular cyber-physical systems and intelligent transportation systems: that integrate computing, communication, and storage capabilities with monitoring and control of vehicles in the physical world to deal with the grand challenges of safe, green, and efficient transportation. The technical challenges are significant, and of high research and practical importance, mainly stemming from the fact that traditionally different groups of scientists deal with this setting without much interaction, using disjoint sets of techniques. Towards merging the two main and different features of those systems, that of information-centric character and node-centric physical world connectivity, well-defined analytical models, methodologies and experimental validations are required of how to build such systems capable of coping with the entire chain of operations and orchestrating the various parts together in a flexible, efficient and economic way. The goal of this competition is to encourage students to build systems and prototypes validating their research results, and through the demo, make it more accessible to the wider community. During MobiCom, demos will be judged by an evaluation committee and one will be selected for the Best Demonstration Award. Demos will primarily be judged on originality, execution, and illustration of the core research ideas. Submission Instructions Submit a summary of the proposed demo via email to xizhang(a)ece.tamu.edu. The proposal should be maximum of 3 pages, including figures if needed, and in PDF format only. Please indicate “MobiCom 2011 Demo Submission” as the subject of the email. All submissions will be acknowledged. As a result, many noble and ubiquitous applications are emerging in the areas of healthcare, social networking, disaster avoidance and overcoming, independent living, etc. The desirable progress in the availability and sharing of information is not without side-effects or formidable challenges. Firstly, extracting the useful information from a large quantity of information in a seamless and timely manner is not simple. Secondly, the devices or mechanisms by which the information is gathered and processed are often limited in their processing and storing capability, which in turn has an effect on the quality of the information. Third, in a ubiquitous computing environment, it is not always possible to expect stable and reliable (as well as always available) sources to obtain critical data from the environment. Hence, noble data gathering, processing and delivery mechanisms are required for robust and reliable adaptation to take place in ubiquitous computing. With this respect, the Casemans 2011 workshop aims to complement the main Ubicomp 2011 conference by setting the focus of the workshop on investigating ways: # Of self-managing paradigms to seamlessly acquire and process context related data from various context sources. # To building self-managing systems that employ context information to support seamless adaptation. This year, we are building on the success of casemans 2010 by introducing three full paper sessions. Additionally, the workshop will feature a combined demo, poster and video session to foster hands-on experience, discussion and collaboration among participants. Each full paper session focuses on papers with solid research result. Furthermore, for each session, one visionary paper with work-in-progress reports will be accepted. These short papers (4 to 6 pages) will focus on visionary, insightful, critical and even controversial studies that encourage further research. The demonstrables are short papers (not more than 2 pages) and are accompanied by demos, attractive posters or videos that show aspects of context-awareness and autonomic service executions. Recent advances in networking and display technologies have enabled the dissemination of multimedia to a variety of devices, from cellular telephones to tablet PCs to wall-size screens. The proliferation of media hosting services and social networks have allowed users to easily share multimedia content with a much wider audience. Digital cameras and camcorders have replaced films and tapes, making it simpler to generate multimedia. Users can easily view, process, analyze, publish, retrieve, or modify multimedia on these devices. However, energy consumption is still a major challenge in the dissemination of multimedia. Energy is consumed during various stages - processing, communication, and storage - of multimedia. In addition, data centers where media services are hosted have also seen a rapid increase in energy consumption in recent times. This trend is not sustainable. Significant progress must be made to save energy and slow down the rate of energy consumption in all these stages. This special issue aims to provide researchers and professionals in the communication, networking, multimedia, and computing communities with insightful papers that present an overview of new approaches to making multimedia communications more energy-efficient. Governments have allocated spectrum for vehicle-vehicle and vehicle-infrastructure communications (e.g., DSRC or 4G cellular). Government and industry have funded large partnerships or projects such as IVI (e.g., CAMP, ACAS), ADASE2, as well as new initiatives such as IVBSS, CICAS, and VII, among others. Academic conferences and workshops on automotive networking and ITS are beginning to grow in popularity (e.g., VANET, V2VCOM, and VDTN). Standards community has been active to ensure interoperability with participation of IEEE, ISO, TIA, ASTM and major automobile manufacturers and other industrial cooperation. There are unique research challenges that need to be addressed in order for vehicle and vehicle-infrastructure communications to be widely deployed. The combination of unique features of automotive applications and unique features of the automotive networking leads to many interesting research areas. The wireless networking between vehicles and with infrastructure has different characteristics from other conventional wireless networking problems. For example, due to rapidly-changing topology as vehicles move around, there are resemblances to ad hoc networking scenarios. However, the constraints and optimizations are very different. Power efficiency is not as important for vehicle communications as it is for traditional ad hoc networking. Vehicles in general are also constrained to move within roads (and within lanes most of the time). Automotive applications also demand stringent communications performance requirements that are not seen in conventional wireless networks. The purpose of this special issue is to showcase the variety of research being conducted in automotive networking, ITS and applications to survey and collect the state-of-the-art in this emerging field. A major role in the "greening" effort to globally reduce energy consumption will be played by wireless networking technologies. On the one hand, wireless communication infrastructures, like the ones managed by mobile network operators, are a major contributor to the ever-increasing energy consumption of the ICT industry, which calls for the adoption of energy-efficient solutions in their design and operation. Moreover, the recent explosive growth of smartphones market adoption and the consequent mobile internet traffic requirements, predicted to raise by a factor 39x until 2014, have prompted waves of research and standard development activities to meet the expected future demands in an energy-efficient manner. On the other hand, wireless networks will also be a major component of the communication infrastructure required by other "green" solutions for the efficient management of energy, since they enable practices like telecommuting (for, e.g., traffic reduction) and remote administration (for, e.g., the Smart Energy Grid), which are expected to significantly help reduce the environmental footprint of many human activities. The aim of this special issue is to seek new and unpublished contributions addressing wireless communications and networking as a major component in the design of green solutions in both ICT and non-ICT domains. In this edition, we aim to explore the challenges of the deep Amazon Rainforest in Brazil. The chosen spot, which is located 21 miles (34 km) from Manaus, is known as Praia do Tupé (Tupé beach), a beautiful and remote beach accessed only by boat through the waters of the Black River. The population is composed by natives living in little communities spread around the jungle and also on the river shore. These people experience constant communication interruptions and most of them do not have any access to the Internet, which makes this area a great field of experiments for extreme and rural communications. Hosted by the Federal University Of Amazonas (UFAM) the conference will start with 3 days of immersion into the jungle where the conference participants will aid in setting up and deploying an extension of a DTN system in this area in order to provide connectivity to a new community. During this time the participants will have the chance to hike around the trails, interact with the locals and also know some natural phenomenons like the "meeting of the waters", where the black waters of the Negro River meet the brown waters of the Solimões River, flowing side by side without mixing for about 9 km. The immersion will not only give a better idea of both the technical and user requirements of such a system, but it will also give many opportunities for informal research discussions between the participants. Participants that have their own software for scenarios like this will also, to as great an extent as possible, be encouraged to test and demonstrate it within this environment. Upon reaching the end of the "field experience", there will be two days of paper presentations and demos in a more traditional conference venue at UFAM's facilities in Manaus. Focus will still be on informal research discussions, with the hope that the field experience will give participants the ability to discuss the topics in a new light. Participants should submit 6 page papers about ideas and visions about the topics of the conference or demo proposals to be shown during the conference. Visionary and thought-provoking papers that are likely to generate much discussion during the conference are especially solicited. The aim of the conference is to maintain an informal environment, where new research ideas can be discussed and developed. We also hope to have a demo session where participants can show their implementations and systems. If you want to show a demo, please submit a 2 page demo proposal using the same submission system as for conference papers. Accepted papers will be published in the ACM Digital Library. The proceedings will be archived in the ACM Digital Library. *** New this year: Demo session! *** The World is increasingly experiencing a strong need for energy consumption reduction and a need for efficient use of scarce natural resources. Official studies report that buildings account for the largest portion of World's energy expenditure and have the fastest growth rate. Clearly, energy saving strategies that target energy use in buildings and surroundings can have a major impact worldwide, driving the current energy market toward self-sufficiency and self-sustainability. This calls for effective techniques and methods that enable accurate carbon foot printing, monitoring and control of appliance activity, energy auditing and management in buildings and surroundings and the generation of energy awareness. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) play a key role in enabling energy-saving systems in buildings and surrounding spaces by providing a reliable, cost-effective and extensible solution that can be placed in existing as well as new structures and can be controlled via the Internet. In fact, WSNs allow the monitoring of the energy consumption in near-real time and, as such, they are an essential tool in the control loop that will be used in future structures for the generation and usage of diverse types of energy. We solicit both papers AND demos that focus on new techniques and technologies capable of improving the global energy efficiency of buildings leveraging connected sensing systems, networks, and devices. We are particularly interested in contributions related to: * Increase energy awareness and reduce consumption by leveraging on sensing systems/social networking/mobile phones, novel visualization and other forms of media to convey relevant information to users; * Systems that can influence building occupant behaviour towards a more parsimonious usage of electricity, gas, heating, water, etc.; * Monitor and actuate appliances in residential and industrial settings (e.g. data centres, HVAC, etc.) * Monitor and control of alternative energy sources aiming at an increase of production efficacy; * Model and simulate heating, cooling, lighting, ventilation, water usage and other energy flows in buildings and surrounding spaces through the combination of real data from sensors and popular energy simulation tools such as Energy Plus and TrnSys; * Create innovative tools to model and visualize energy expenditure and production (from, e.g., solar panels, wind turbines); * Integrate sensor-based systems to improve grid operation and energy distribution (electricity, gas, water); * Sensor systems for the identification of appliances in industrial and home environments, which can be used to estimate the energy usage/production model and to predict future demands; Successful papers will clearly demonstrate how much energy is reduced by the authors' contribution, either through real-world results or credible simulation and analysis of an energy problem. Papers should consider the entire energy system, including any effects on occupant behaviors, production efficiency, peak load and smart grid architectures, sustainability, pollutants, and total energy usage. Demo abstracts should describe both the technology being showcased as well as the user experience of the demo. Submissions must include a separate section for the demo script that specifically describes how users will interact with the demo. These "challenges papers" should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting avenues and/or influence the direction of future research. Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Challenges papers will be reviewed by the MobiComprogram committee and will be part of the technical program and published in ACM MobiComproceedings. They should be submitted using the same submission procedure adopted for the full papers. The workshop aims to attract and discuss the sensing, networking and application issues of smartphones, and how these can be solved by creating model, frameworks, and implementing context engines on smartphones. We want to bring together context computing, social computing, and hardware researchers along with user interface designers and practitioners with diverse backgrounds interested in 1) exploring different perspectives and approaches to modeling physical, spatial, temporal and social context from the smartphone, 2) the different types of applications that can be enabled from the rich gathering and inference of context, and 3) issues of integrating the context into application design and user interface and user interaction models. Complex dynamics of the networks and also the difficulties in performing measurement itself pose many challenges. This workshop will provide a forum for researchers and practitioners interested in network measurements to discuss and exchange measurement related research in both wireless and wired domains, and also explore emerging fields of measurements such as on mobile devices. MMVEs have experienced phenomenal growth in recent years in the form of massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) such as World of Warcraft and Lineage, and social communities such as Second Life and Hobbo Hotel. The technical aspect of designing, developing, and deploying them is highly interdisciplinary and involves experts from many domains, including graphics, networking, protocol and architecture designs. The MMVE workshop intends to provide a forum for both academic researchers and industry developers to investigate the architectural and system support for MMVEs. By gathering experts under one roof, we wish to discuss their findings, incite collaborations, and move the state of the art forward. Topics ------ The workshop seeks to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners in the field, and encourages discussions based on the presented papers to identify current and future research topics. Some key and emerging issues we would especially like to solicit are: 1. The integration with casual, social networking systems. Recently there has been a surge of casual social games on social networking sites such as Facebook, with tens of millions of active users. While many of them are not yet real-time in nature, providing massive real-time interactions may only be a matter of time. How will such systems emerge or be designed? Additionally, many 3D chatrooms / instant messengers are now appearing (e.g., IMVU, Club Cooee, Game Xiu). While most interactions are limited as room-based small-group interactions, the total concurrent users may also reach critical sizes given their casual nature (e.g., IMVU has already over 1 million active accounts). How should such systems be supported and scale? 2. The adoption of parallelism to increase scale. Fast GPU and multi-core processors are now becoming common commodity. How will this hardware trend impact MMVE server-cluster design? And how should P2P approaches for MMVE take advantage of the increased power at client-side? Additionally, home set-top boxes with large local storage and broadband Internet connections are becoming household commodities, how will this trend impact the ways MMVEs be delivered (perhaps via content streaming) or architected? 3. Interoperable MMVE standards and protocols. As the market for virtual world increases and matures, efforts to provide interoperable user experience across multiple virtual environments have also intensified. For example, initiatives are ongoing to form IETF working groups on defining virtual world standard protocols (e.g., MMOX and VWRAP ). Part of any standard process is the identification of common features and requirements. What are the common features and requirements in MMVE that may be modeled and abstracted to facilitate such standardization effort? And are there working protocols that already exist in current systems? We would like to invite such experience sharing and discussions. The workshop thus will address the following issues: 1. Scalability: the ability to handle at least thousands of concurrent users, interacting via Internet. 2. Interactivity: how to provide responsive, near real time interactions despite latency and jitter. 3. Consistency: providing consistent views for users, despite the inherent delay in state updates. 4. Persistency: the ability to save and access the world states despite disconnections and failures. 5. Security and privacy: distributed algorithms that allow secure interactions and privacy guarantees. 6. Interoperability: integration of multiple systems or providers with common protocols or clients. 7. Bandwidth restricted (mobile) devices: the integration of mobile devices for nomadic systems. 8. Self-organizing architectures: load balancing and fault tolerance without manual configurations. 9. Content streaming: voice communication and 3D content streaming. 10. Implementation issues: novel approaches to effectively manage the complexity of development. Submission Guidelines ---------------------- Paper submissions must cover one of the topics listed above, or a closely- related one. Submitted papers should be at most 6 pages long and *must be blinded*. Research papers must be original prior unpublished work and not under review elsewhere. All submissions will be peer-reviewed (double-blind) and selected based on their originality, merit, and relevance to the workshop. The term smart objects in this case refer to everyday objects of all kinds and makes that are enhanced with computational intelligence and the capability to communicate with it other and online services. In many cases communication is based on wireless sensor networks integrated with an object, such as parts of a building, a logistic good, a vehicle or sensors in the environment. In other cases, communication is based on a hybrid approach with part of the network being infrastructure-based and the rest self-organized. Smart objects incorporate monitoring and control functions and need to communicate with each other and to gateways. They are an essential part of cyber-physical systems and can find multifaceted applications in fields such as logistics, smart buildings, intelligent transport, and smart city applications such as traffic management. These smart objects will play a dominant role in the Future Internet. Managing such smart objects requires algorithms and approaches based, in part, on general approaches discussed in the MONAMI Conference. However, the workshop will go one step further and consider, in particular: * Energy-efficient, self-organized access and routing schemes for smart object systems * Testbeds and experimental evaluation of services based on smart objects * Service and application management platforms for a variety of applications, e.g. smart cities * Autonomic network monitoring and management for smart object networks * Future Internet Architectures with smart objects All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed by at least three independent reviewers, including a TPC member to ensure high quality and relevance to the topics of the Conference. The effective and efficient realization of such large scale, complex ad-hoc networking environments requires intensive, coordinated technical research and development efforts, especially in power aware, scalable, robust wireless distributed protocols, due to the unusual application requirements and the severe resource constraints of the sensor devices. On the other hand, a solid foundational background seems necessary for sensor networks to achieve their full potential. It is a challenge for abstract modeling, algorithmic design and analysis to achieve provably efficient, scalable and fault-tolerant realizations of such huge, highly-dynamic, complex, non-conventional networks. Features including the extremely large number of sensor devices in the network, the severe power, computing and memory limitations, their dense, random deployment and frequent failures, pose new interesting abstract modeling, algorithmic design, analysis and implementation challenges of great practical impact. ALGOSENSORS aims to bring together research contributions related to diverse algorithmic and complexity theoretic aspects of wireless sensor networks. The Program Committee reserves the right to move papers between Tracks in order to ensure a fair evaluation. Simultaneous submission to other conferences is not allowed.
