The central element of this vision is the existence of a network of interconnected objects (from books to cars, from electrical appliances to food) that will be able not only to obtain information from their surroundings and interact with the physical world, but also to use existing Internet standards to provide services. However, security is extremely important for achieving this goal. As this worldwide network of interconnected objects can be exploited anywhere by anyone and anytime, it is necessary to enhance it with strong security foundations able to give birth to a world-changing paradigm. In fact, in order to adequately protect the IoT, there are plenty of factors that must be taken into account. For example, the protection of the different building blocks, the creation of interoperable security mechanisms, the development of new services that allow multiple entities (e.g., human beings, machines, objects) to cooperate with each other, and the management of all the information produced by those interactions. This special issue is proposed to cover research results and innovation case studies on security for the Internet of Things. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * New security problems in the context of the IoT. * Privacy risks and data management problems. * Identifying, authenticating, and authorizing entities. * Development of trust frameworks for secure collaboration. * New cryptographic primitives for constrained "things". * Connecting heterogeneous ecosystems and technologies. * Legal Challenges and Governance Issues. * Resilience to external and internal attacks. * Context-Aware security. * Providing protection to an IP-connected IoT. * Web services security and other application-layer issues. * Distributed policy enforcement and rights management. * Usability of Security and Privacy Technologies in the context of the IoT. Submitted papers must represent high-quality and previously unpublished works. Original research papers are solicited in all areas on security for the Internet of Things. Handheld electronics, location devices, telecommunications networks, and a wide assortment of tags and sensors are constantly producing a rich stream of data reflecting various aspects of urban life. For urban planners and designers, these accumulations of digital traces are valuable sources of data in capturing the pulse of the city in an astonishing degree of temporal and spatial detail. Yet this condition of the hybrid city - which operates simultaneously in the digital and physical realms - also poses difficult questions about privacy, scale, and design, among many others. These questions must be addressed as we move toward achieving an augmented, fine-grained understanding of how the city functions - socially, economically and yes, even psychologically. This workshop aims to bring together researchers and practitioners to discuss and explore the research challenges and opportunities in applying the pervasive computing paradigm to urban spaces. We are seeking multi-disciplinary contributions that reveal interesting aspects about urban life and exploit the digital traces to create novel urban applications that benefit citizens, urban planners, and policy makers. SCOPE The Workshop provides a forum for engineers and scientists in academia, industry and government to present their latest research findings in specialized ad hoc networks and systems. As an alternative to one-size-fits-all general solutions in the area of ad hoc networking and systems, we want to stimulate the application oriented divide-and-conquer approach to ad hoc network and system research. The goal is to provide sound and efficient specialized ad hoc networks and systems (SAHNS), suitable for building solutions specific for well-defined classes of applications or even individual applications. We want to consider both specialized ad hoc networks and specialized ad hoc systems. The latter can be built on top of specialized ad hoc networks. Alternatively, they can be constructed independently of specialized ad hoc networks, e.g., on top of general-purpose ad hoc networks. It should be emphasized that SAHNS is interested only in solutions specific to specialized ad hoc networks and systems. The Workshop is not interested in broad general-purpose solutions for all ad hoc networks and systems, or in generic solutions for extremely broad subclasses of ad hoc networks and systems. For example, the Workshop is not interested in general-purpose solutions for all sensornets or all P2P systems but is instead interested in specialized solutions for their application-oriented subclasses. One example of SAHNS targeted by this workshop are Incident Area Networks (IANs), dedicated to single incidents or events. An IAN can be pre-deployed for a planned event, such as a sporting or "nationally significant" event, or can be dynamically deployed for an unplanned incident, such as a local law enforcement situation or a natural disaster. Another example are opportunistic resource utilization networks (e.g., oppnets), in which the network reacts to a lack of resources by finding and incorporating "helpers" that have needed resources or services. In cooperative networking, individual network nodes can cooperate to implement network goals in a coordinated way, and the cooperation can take place in a cross-layer fashion. Successful cooperative networking can prompt the development of advanced wireless networks to cost-effectively provide multimedia services and applications such as telecommuting, video conferencing, interactive media, real-time Internet games, etc., anytime, anywhere. However, the impact and challenges of cooperative networking on the cross-layer design beyond cooperative transmissions are not well-understood yet. Some fundamental aspects requiring immediate studies include: theoretical tools to guide the design of cooperative networking systems, effective incentive mechanisms for cooperation, new protocol design for cooperative networking, and compatible deployment of cooperative networking over the existing infrastructure. This special issue aims at reporting the state-of-the-art research and development on cooperative networking. Original, unpublished contributions and invited articles, reflecting various aspects of cooperative networking are encouraged. The topics of interest for the special issue include, but are not limited to: * MAC/link layer issues such as adaptive access connection and scheduling; * Cooperative routing at the network layer, transport layer issues such as multi-homing transport layer protocols, end-to-end flow and congestion control; * Application layer such as peer-to-peer system design over cooperative networks; * Cross layer design and optimization, and heterogeneous QoS provisioning; * Topology control and mobility management; * Resource management; * Security support to complement/enhance cooperative networking; * Information theoretic aspects, asymptotic performance analysis, coding schemes and scaling law; * System modeling and experimental study such as those in cellular network, vehicular network, femtocell, and ad hoc/mesh network; * System level topics such as incentive for cooperation, and economics issues related to cooperative networks. Prospective authors should prepare their manuscripts in accordance with the IEEE J-SAC format described at http://www.jsac.ucsd.edu/Guidelines/info.html. The growth of Internet shows no signs of slowing down and it steadily becomes the cause of a new pervasive paradigm in computing and communications. This new paradigm enhances the traditional Internet into a smart Internet of Things (IoT) created around intelligent interconnections of diverse objects in the physical world, such as vehicles, cellphones, habitats and habitat occupants, through low-cost information gathering devices, such as sensors and RFID tags, that facilitate fast-paced interactions among the objects themselves as well as the objects and persons in any place and at any time. IoT will usher a wide range of smart applications and services to cope with many of the challenges that individuals and organizations face in their everyday lives. For example, remote healthcare monitoring systems will help alleviate the severe shortage of healthcare personnel in an ageing society; intelligent transportation systems will help reduce traffic congestion and inevitably ills caused by it such as air-pollution; smart distribution systems from utility grids to supply chains will improve the quality and reduce the cost of their respective goods and services; tagged objects can be recycled more efficiently by being retrieved from bulk waste disposal, and so on. These applications would dramatically change the way our societies function and thus have a big impact on many aspects of people’s life in the years to come. IoT is not a mere extension of today’s Internet or an internet of Internet systems. It represents intelligent end-to-end systems that enable smart solutions and as such it covers a diverse range of technologies, including sensing, communications, networking, computing, information processing, and intelligent control technologies. To make IoT a reality, significant research needs to be conducted within and across these technological aspects of IoT. This has recently motivated a voluminous amount of research activities in the hot field and this Feature Topic Issue intends to capture and expose it to the IEEE ComMag readership. Scope of the issue This feature topic issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art development in technology, application, and standardization in the field of the Internet of Things, and present an insight of future research opportunities and challenges in this field. The feature issue will consider original survey and research articles written in a tutorial style. The AOC 2011 workshop will be a meeting point for people working in the area and it will constitute a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and application developers, both from industry and academia. The AOC 2011 workshop will have a primary interest in the new directions of opportunistic communications represented by mobile social networking, content-centric networking, and participatory sensing. The program committee will evaluate each paper using metrics that are appropriate for the topic area. For example, a systems or experimental paper in the protocol area will be evaluated based on the innovations in the protocol design, practical implementation, and realistic evaluation, whereas a more theoretical paper may be evaluated mostly based on innovation within the design of the algorithm and its provable properties. At the same time, the evaluation of wireless and mobile networking technologies is challenging because of the significant impact that the physical environment has on performance. For this reason, all papers must carefully describe and justify the evaluation methodology that is used and identify its strengths and weaknesses. The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. CHALLENGES PAPERS: The conference strongly encourages the submission of short papers in the field of mobile computing and wireless networking that present revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing assumptions prevalent among the research community. These challenges papers should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting avenues and influence the direction of future research. Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Challenges papers will be reviewed by the MobiCom program committee and will be part of the technical program and published in ACM MobiCom proceedings. They should be submitted using the same submission procedure adopted for the full papers. The title of these papers must start with the word "Challenge:" i.e., "Challenge: Rest of the Title." SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should prepare a PDF version of their full paper. The setting is informal. Topics of interest are the same as research topics in the SIGCOMM conference call for papers. Although anyone can submit a poster, preference will be given to posters where the primary contribution is from one or more students. The SIGCOMM 2011 Poster and Demo committee will review all demo proposals. At the conference, a student must present student posters. Authors of accepted papers in SIGCOMM 2011 may not submit a poster on the same work in those papers. Student Research Competition The SIGCOMM poster session will also serve as an ACM student research competition. Qualified entrants must have current ACM student membership, have graduate or undergraduate student status at the time of submission (May 2011, below), and be submitted by a single student author. Meanwhile, high speed vehicles such as airplanes and high speed trains play an increasingly important role in people’s lives, since they provide a relatively stable and spacious environment for long distance travel. As a result, there will be a strong demand for broadband wireless communications (BWC) for high speed vehicles to provide information and onboard entertainment services to passengers. BWC is also needed in vehicle control systems for operational information such as fault sensor measurements and diagnostics, video surveillance, and so on. Interesting research areas and various challenges arise when designing BWC systems for high speed vehicles. For example, a new network structure is needed since a direct transmission signal between the passenger and infrastructure-base-station experiences serious deterioration when traveling through the speeding vehicle. Distributed antenna and radio over fiber can be employed for vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. Moreover, due to the lack of accurate channel information, innovative radio resource allocation schemes are also needed at the infrastructure-base-station to assign resources to high speed vehicles. The fast movement of high speed vehicles through cellular networks causes frequent handovers and drop-offs, degrading the user experience. This prompts the need for designing fast and reliable handover and random access schemes. In addition, novel physical layer techniques of BWC in high speed mobile environments need to be considered. In particular, there is a strong need to evaluate the effect of Doppler spread and revisit the noncoherent coding, modulation and MIMO schemes. Therefore, BWC for high speed vehicles is a pressing research topic that has huge applications. It is imperative to develop the key techniques enabling BWC for high speed vehicles. The goal of this issue is to bring together the most updated research contributions in this area. We are soliciting high quality, original and unpublished work in BWC for high speed vehicles, especially those pushing the envelope in terms of vehicle speed and communication bandwidth. IREHSS aims to provide a forum for the interaction of experts belonging to these different research areas, from wearable computing and ubiquitous connectivity to context-awareness, sensor data fusion, artificial intelligence, expert systems, databases, security and privacy. The main objective is to provide a forum for the interaction of these multiple areas as an important chance to discuss and understand what aspects have to be considered to provide effective e-health systems. Authors are invited to submit papers presenting new research related to E-health, not published or currently under review for another workshop, conference, or journal. Opportunistic networking is the enabling strategy for communications in a mobile network. The idea of opportunistically exploiting extemporary contacts among the users of the network poses new and challenging problems, as well as providing with novel and promising opportunities, to the networking research community. The AOC 2011 workshop will be a meeting point for people working in the area and it will constitute a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and application developers, both from industry and academia. The AOC 2011 workshop will have a primary interest in the new directions of opportunistic communications represented by mobile social networking, content-centric networking, and participatory sensing. More in general, papers tackling issues related to opportunistic networking and computing are welcome. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of autonomic and opportunistic communications are solicited, as well as papers describing prototype implementations and deployments. Mobile software advances just as quickly with researchers and practitioners migrating from desktop-centric to smartphone-centric applications. Research in this area is driven by the all-mobile lifestyle, consumer demand and advances in hardware design and communication networks. The steady decrease of mobile data communication charges and the proliferation of devices with large screens, rich-multimedia support and built-in GPS, WiFi, sensors and compass give rise to novel mobile and nomadic applications. Mobile application developers face numerous challenges related with location and context awareness, personalization, mobile data management, porting over multiple platforms, devices fragmentation, etc. Service providers are responsible for application management, deployment models and middleware support. The goal of this special issue is to explore application-layer research and development in mobile computing and solicit high-quality research works outlining application development and industry status and trends. Examples of complex networks are found in living organisms, in engineering systems, as well as in social networks. Most of the real-world systems have the required degree of complexity to be called "complex systems". Complexity may have to do with the intricate dynamics of the interacting components, with the non-trivial properties of the underlying network topology, or with the sheer size of the system itself. Despite the numerous workshops and conferences related to network science, it is still a set of loosely interacting communities. Those communities would benefit from better interactions. Simplex aims at triggering different computer science communities (e.g. communication networks, distributed systems) to propose research areas and topics that should be tackled from the network science perspective. We also seek contributions from network science that are relevant to solve practical computer science problems. Two types of contributions are foreseen from prospective authors. The first type would consist of use-cases of theoretical tools and methods to solve practical problems. Such contributions should be as usable as possible by practitioners in the related field. The second type of contributions would come from practitioners that have identified a problem that may be solved by tools from network sciences. The point of such contributions is to make the network sciences community aware of the importance of a high-impact problem, and to suggest means by which the problem may be solved by the network science community. Both contributions should stimulate interaction between theoreticians and practitioners, and also have high potential impact in either field. Topics for the workshop include, but are not limited to: - Application of complex network theory to the design of distributed and mobile systems; - Data mining of large scale networks; - Analysis of dynamic and time-varying networks; - Network robustness to failures and attacks; - Machine learning and network science; - Complex network theory applied to forwarding/routing problems - Application of social network analysis to communication and computing system design; - Mobility and connectivity modelling; - Network science and data&information retrieval; - Complex network theory and security applications. Conf. on Software Engineering (ICSE) Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are a fundamental building-block of the upcoming Internet of Things, as they enable seamless integration of the digital and physical worlds. Despite the interest raised by this decade-old research topic, the development of WSN software is still carried out in a rather primitive fashion, by building software directly atop the operating system and by relying on the individual, hard-earned programming skills. WSN developers must face not only the functional application requirements but also a number of challenging, non-functional requirements and constraints resulting from scarce re- sources. The heterogeneity of network nodes, the unpredictable envi- ronmental influences, and the large size of the network further add to the difficulties. In the WSN community there is a growing awareness of the need for methodologies, techniques, and abstractions that simplify the develop- ment task and increase the confidence in the correctness and perfor- mance of the resulting software. Software engineering (SE) support is therefore sought, not only to ease the development task but also to make it more reliable, dependable, and repeatable. Nevertheless, this topic has received so far very little attention by the SE community. The aim of SESENA11 is to attract researchers belonging to both the SE and WSN communities, not only to exchange their recent research re- sults on the topic, but also to stimulate discussion about the core open problems and to define a shared research agenda. The workshop welcomes both research contributions and position statements. The for- mer will allow discussing in technical depth novel results with an au- dience composed of both SE and WSN researchers. The latter will pro- vide the opportunity for presenting open problems, provocative views, or previously-unexplored ideas in an informal fashion. SESENA11 will also include a "speakers' corner" session composed by impromptu pre- sentations where any of the attendees (including those without an ac- cepted paper) will be given a chance to present their own views in very short statements (e.g., 2-4 minutes). A wealth of algorithmic approaches to activity recognition have been developed that employ state-of- the-art signal processing and machine learning techniques. Reviewing the current literature in the field may give the impression that the general problem of activity recognition has almost been solved. State-of-the-art AR systems achieve recognition rates of well beyond 80 or 90 percent across tasks. This opens up the question which other - more challenging - activity recognition problems should be addressed in the future. More generally speaking, this also relates to the question how a future AR system should look like. What will be the challenges of AR that go beyond the aforementioned classification approach and could, for example, comprise a quantitative measure of the quality of performing an activity rather than only detecting an activity? IWFAR 2011, a satellite workshop of Pervasive 2011, is supposed to focus on new "frontiers in activity recognition using pervasive sensing" in the aforementioned sense. We want to stimulate and explore the creativity of the community regarding new applications and approaches to AR. The latter could comprise radically new procedures like, for example, biologically inspired AR methods or rigorously exploiting general time-series analysis approaches (e.g. from the financial domain). Recent publications in the AR community represent quite promising starting points (cf. e.g. time-delay embedding for the analysis of repetitive activity patterns, which was inspired by the physics of complex systems). IWFAR 2011 provides a forum for researchers and practitioners to gather and present new ideas, and discuss aspects related to applications and techniques that go beyond classic activity recognition. Covering a more or less "emerging" field, expected contributions would also cover more speculative ideas that are too specific for the broader audience of the main conference. After the initial hype, at the current stage, several ongoing research efforts are focusing on the several open management aspects of the Cloud, such as interoperability, scalability, reliability, power management, and confidentiality/auditability, with the final goal to make Cloud technologies and services more mature so to boost and to facilitate a more widespread industrial uptake of Cloud systems. Despite the several recent efforts on Cloud systems, it is still unclear whether current solutions are able to withstand the abrupt and unpredictably changes imposed by the emergent Cloud application scenarios, where services and the whole software stacks (from the kernel upward) have to scale up and down fast by exploiting highly distributed and heterogeneous virtualized resources. The ambition and mission of MoCS 2011 is to put on the foreground all above issues, and to bring together different ongoing research efforts on the management of Cloud systems. This year, special focus will be on the challenging management issues related to the delivery of efficient Green computing solutions over the Cloud. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following: * Novel adaptive management solutions for scalable, maintainable, cost-effective Cloud provision, at all software stack layers; * New models and paradigms for the management of Cloud services at the host level and within/between data centres (intra-/inter-domain); * Analytical and simulation models and tools to measure systems ability to scale and to achieve relevant energy savings; * New methods and tools able to identify and enforce optimal trade- offs between performance, energy consumption, safety, and security; * Emerging standards for interoperability (resource virtualization, specific computing interfaces, etc.), also between public and private Clouds; * Experimentation testbeds, field trials and empirical evaluations, and measurement studies. Mobile applications are rapidly developing and becoming more and more important. They consist of software that runs on a smart phone or tablet and perform certain tasks for the user of the cellular phone. In this way, the user can use the application in its personal situation and can take advantage of the mobile phone’s capabilities, such as the camera, positioning and navigation or network access. Now, mobile devices are becoming even smarter. They are computer networked and user reconfigurable. A device can be seen as part of a cloud or operate autonomously. It is a device, that consists of CPU, storage and network access and has the intelligence to perform services both reactive and proactive. It can also be seen as a part of a smart environment, i.e. interact with a physical world consisting of sensors and actuators, displays and computational elementsthat are connected through a continuous network. Currently, smartphones with more advanced computing capabilities and connectivity than classic mobile phones offer more functionalities and run smarter applications. Mobile platforms comprise an increasing number of different sensors such as photosensors, accelerometers, gyroscopes etc, thus allowing sophisticated contextualized applications. In addition, users as well as developers benefit from an increasing number of market places and online stores for mobile applications. The concept of a mobile "app" that can be purchased via centralized hubs is already very common among the growing number of users. Ensuring high connectivity within the network is vital for real applications. Moreover, for many applications, sensor networks cannot operate in complete isolation. There must be a way enabling a monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced by the sensor network, and even to interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read the sensed values instantaneously, fix some inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By connecting the sensor network to an existing network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet, mobile network infrastructures, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and notably the global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be straightforward. The integration of RFID and WSN is one of the most promising technologies that will play an important role in emerging the Internet of the Things (IoT). For example, in a healthcare application, RFID tags can be used to track the elders whereas the sensors are used to monitor the elders’ conditions. However, many questions need answers, and many challenges must be tackled before such interconnection becomes effective. Suitability of IP standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks, doors will be opened to new vulnerabilities. An intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore, but it might remotely launch attacks. Security is thus a very important aspect that must be considered. Routing, QoS, and interoperability are also important and challenging issues in the new heterogeneous systems. Connecting different WSNs is another issue that needs to be considered. A WSN might get partitioned into distinct segments due to battery exhaustion of many sensors. Providing mechanisms to restore connectivity by connecting those segments is of high importance. Also, an isolated segment of sensor nodes that cannot reach its sink can exploit the existence of a neighboringreachable WSN to deliver its sensed information. This workshop is a forum for researchers, academics, and industrials to debate the different issues related to the interconnection of wireless sensor networks, and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions. * * * * *Topics* Topics of the workshop consist of all aspects related to WSN, with more focus on the interconnection and integration of WSN to other networks, as well as the connection between WSNs and connectivity issues. Many in the field argued that the Internet protocols were impractical for the resource constrained devices that were being embedded in the physical world; that the end-to-end architecture was inappropriate for the localized algorithms and in-network processing required to achieve robustness and scalability; and that an architecture designed to accommodate a wide range of applications was unnecessary as sensor networks would be tailored to specific target applications. In the past couple years, the Smart Grid push has placed a pressing need to deploy networks that have an unprecedented scale when compared to existing IP networks (e.g., 10 million end points within a single network targeted by utility manufacturers), allow multi-vendor interoperability, and utilize low-cost communication devices. Sensor networks are considered a natural fit for Smart Grid applications such as Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Home Area Networking (HAN). To address this need, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is working with researchers and practitioners to standardize protocols, such as 6LoWPAN and ROLL, for constrained networks. This workshop solicits articles that describe early experiences with such standards, papers that describe sensor network applications built on top of these standards, as well as research proposals regarding how to extend the standards. Topics of Interest Authors are invited to submit papers for presentation at the workshop. Wireless vehicular communications has been identified as a key technology for increasing road safety and transport efficiency, and providing Internet access on the move to ensure wireless ubiquitous connectivity. The potential of this technology has been acknowledged with the establishment of ambitious research programs worldwide. The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) currently covers through its areas of interest (Mobile Radio, Transportation Systems and Automotive Electronics) all technical aspects needed to make wireless vehicular communications a reality. As a result, the IEEE VTS society has decided to establish a technical symposium on wireless vehicular communications. The IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Vehicular Communications (WiVeC) covers all vehicular wireless communications aspects of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Person (V2P) communications, including implications on transport efficiency and safety, automotive electronics, liability issues, standardizations efforts and spectrum assignment. After the successful 2007 (Baltimore), 2008 (Calgary) and 2010 (Taipei) editions, the fourth IEEE WiVeC symposium will be co-located with the 74th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference 2011 Fall conference, and will take place at the Hilton Union Square Hotel in San Francisco on the 5th and 6th of September 2011. Combined registrations packages will be offered for WiVeC and VTC events. The growth of Internet shows no signs of slowing down and it steadily becomes the cause of a new pervasive paradigm in computing and communications. This new paradigm enhances the traditional Internet into a smart Internet of Things (IoT) created around intelligent interconnections of diverse objects in the physical world, such as vehicles, cellphones, habitats and habitat occupants, through low-cost information gathering devices, such as sensors and RFID tags, that facilitate fast-paced interactions among the objects themselves as well as the objects and persons in any place and at any time. IoT will usher a wide range of smart applications and services to cope with many of the challenges that individuals and organizations face in their everyday lives. For example, remote healthcare monitoring systems will help alleviate the severe shortage of healthcare personnel in an ageing society; intelligent transportation systems will help reduce traffic congestion and inevitably ills caused by it such as air-pollution; smart distribution systems from utility grids to supply chains will improve the quality and reduce the cost of their respective goods and services; tagged objects can be recycled more efficiently by being retrieved from bulk waste disposal, and so on. These applications would dramatically change the way our societies function and thus have a big impact on many aspects of people’s life in the years to come. IoT is not a mere extension of today’s Internet or an internet of Internet systems. It represents intelligent end-to-end systems that enable smart solutions and as such it covers a diverse range of technologies, including sensing, communications, networking, computing, information processing, and intelligent control technologies. To make IoT a reality, significant research needs to be conducted within and across these technological aspects of IoT. This has recently motivated a voluminous amount of research activities in the hot field and this Feature Topic Issue intends to capture and expose it to the IEEE ComMag readership. Scope of the issue This feature topic issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art development in technology, application, and standardization in the field of the Internet of Things, and present an insight of future research opportunities and challenges in this field. The feature issue will consider original survey and research articles written in a tutorial style. The resource can be either energy (when it's a limiting factor for the global working time like in sensor networks), or computational time (e.g., for systems with small computational capacities like embedded devices or smart cards). It can also be delivery time (for systems which have to give an answer in a bounded time like real-time systems), or data availability (when data is a central and essential point in the system like in medical systems). The solutions for constrained systems can not only adapt existing approaches for traditional systems as they open a whole new world of opportunities and new applications. Tightly coupled to the physical world, constrained systems need different kinds of programming, of communication and of interfacing. Submitted papers must not have been published or simultaneously submitted elsewhere. Submission should include a cover page with authors' names, affiliation addresses, fax numbers, phone numbers, and email addresses. Please, indicate clearly the corresponding author and include up to 6 keywords from the above list of topics and an abstract of no more than 450 words. The full manuscript should be at most 8 pages using the two-column IEEE format. Additional pages will be charged additional fee. Please include page numbers on all preliminary submissions to make it easier for reviewers to provide helpful comments. Submit a PDF copy of your full manuscript via email to the workshop organizers. Only PDF files will be accepted, sent by email to the workshop organizers. Each paper will receive a minimum of three reviews. Papers will be selected based on their originality, relevance, technical clarity and presentation. Submission implies the willingness of at least one of the authors to register and present the paper, if accepted. Authors of accepted papers must guarantee that their papers will be registered and presented at the workshop. Accepted papers will be published in the Conference proceedings. Instructions for final manuscript format and requirements will be posted on the CTS 2011 Conference web site. It is our intent to have the proceedings formally published in hard and/or soft copies and be available at the time of the conference. The proceedings is projected to be included in the IEEE Digital Library and indexed accordingly. Conf. on Software Engineering (ICSE) Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are a fundamental building-block of the upcoming Internet of Things, as they enable seamless integration of the digital and physical worlds. Despite the interest raised by this decade-old research topic, the development of WSN software is still carried out in a rather primitive fashion, by building software directly atop the operating system and by relying on the individual, hard-earned programming skills. WSN developers must face not only the functional application requirements but also a number of challenging, non-functional requirements and constraints resulting from scarce re- sources. The heterogeneity of network nodes, the unpredictable envi- ronmental influences, and the large size of the network further add to the difficulties. In the WSN community there is a growing awareness of the need for methodologies, techniques, and abstractions that simplify the develop- ment task and increase the confidence in the correctness and perfor- mance of the resulting software. Software engineering (SE) support is therefore sought, not only to ease the development task but also to make it more reliable, dependable, and repeatable. Nevertheless, this topic has received so far very little attention by the SE community. The aim of SESENA11 is to attract researchers belonging to both the SE and WSN communities, not only to exchange their recent research re- sults on the topic, but also to stimulate discussion about the core open problems and to define a shared research agenda. The workshop welcomes both research contributions and position statements. The for- mer will allow discussing in technical depth novel results with an au- dience composed of both SE and WSN researchers. The latter will pro- vide the opportunity for presenting open problems, provocative views, or previously-unexplored ideas in an informal fashion. SESENA11 will also include a "speakers' corner" session composed by impromptu pre- sentations where any of the attendees (including those without an ac- cepted paper) will be given a chance to present their own views in very short statements (e.g., 2-4 minutes). TOPICS OF INTEREST The workshop solicits contributions including, but not limited to, the following aspects of SE for sensor networks: * (macro)programming languages and compilers; * testing and debugging; * formal verification and model checking; * model-driven approaches; * interfacing WSNs and business software SUBMISSIONS Prospective participants are invited to submit research or position papers containing original unpublished material describing ongoing work and new ideas, mature research results, or experience reports. Submissions must conform to the ICSE submission format and rules (see http://2011.icse-conferences.org/content/submission-guidelines).
