The workshop will be held in conjunction with the main tracks of ITST-2011 conference. In cooperative networking, individual network nodes can cooperate to implement network goals in a coordinated way, and the cooperation can take place in a cross-layer fashion. Successful cooperative networking can prompt the development of advanced wireless networks to cost-effectively provide multimedia services and applications such as telecommuting, video conferencing, interactive media, real-time Internet games, etc., anytime, anywhere. However, the impact and challenges of cooperative networking on the cross-layer design beyond cooperative transmissions are not well-understood yet. Some fundamental aspects requiring immediate studies include: theoretical tools to guide the design of cooperative networking systems, effective incentive mechanisms for cooperation, new protocol design for cooperative networking, and compatible deployment of cooperative networking over the existing infrastructure. This special issue aims at reporting the state-of-the-art research and development on cooperative networking. Original, unpublished contributions and invited articles, reflecting various aspects of cooperative networking are encouraged. The topics of interest for the special issue include, but are not limited to: * MAC/link layer issues such as adaptive access connection and scheduling; * Cooperative routing at the network layer, transport layer issues such as multi-homing transport layer protocols, end-to-end flow and congestion control; * Application layer such as peer-to-peer system design over cooperative networks; * Cross layer design and optimization, and heterogeneous QoS provisioning; * Topology control and mobility management; * Resource management; * Security support to complement/enhance cooperative networking; * Information theoretic aspects, asymptotic performance analysis, coding schemes and scaling law; * System modeling and experimental study such as those in cellular network, vehicular network, femtocell, and ad hoc/mesh network; * System level topics such as incentive for cooperation, and economics issues related to cooperative networks. The growth of Internet shows no signs of slowing down and it steadily becomes the cause of a new pervasive paradigm in computing and communications. This new paradigm enhances the traditional Internet into a smart Internet of Things (IoT) created around intelligent interconnections of diverse objects in the physical world, such as vehicles, cellphones, habitats and habitat occupants, through low-cost information gathering devices, such as sensors and RFID tags, that facilitate fast-paced interactions among the objects themselves as well as the objects and persons in any place and at any time. IoT will usher a wide range of smart applications and services to cope with many of the challenges that individuals and organizations face in their everyday lives. For example, remote healthcare monitoring systems will help alleviate the severe shortage of healthcare personnel in an ageing society; intelligent transportation systems will help reduce traffic congestion and inevitably ills caused by it such as air-pollution; smart distribution systems from utility grids to supply chains will improve the quality and reduce the cost of their respective goods and services; tagged objects can be recycled more efficiently by being retrieved from bulk waste disposal, and so on. These applications would dramatically change the way our societies function and thus have a big impact on many aspects of people’s life in the years to come. IoT is not a mere extension of today’s Internet or an internet of Internet systems. It represents intelligent end-to-end systems that enable smart solutions and as such it covers a diverse range of technologies, including sensing, communications, networking, computing, information processing, and intelligent control technologies. To make IoT a reality, significant research needs to be conducted within and across these technological aspects of IoT. This has recently motivated a voluminous amount of research activities in the hot field and this Feature Topic Issue intends to capture and expose it to the IEEE ComMag readership. Scope of the issue This feature topic issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art development in technology, application, and standardization in the field of the Internet of Things, and present an insight of future research opportunities and challenges in this field. The program committee will evaluate each paper using metrics that are appropriate for the topic area. For example, a systems or experimental paper in the protocol area will be evaluated based on the innovations in the protocol design, practical implementation, and realistic evaluation, whereas a more theoretical paper may be evaluated mostly based on innovation within the design of the algorithm and its provable properties. At the same time, the evaluation of wireless and mobile networking technologies is challenging because of the significant impact that the physical environment has on performance. For this reason, all papers must carefully describe and justify the evaluation methodology that is used and identify its strengths and weaknesses. The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. CHALLENGES PAPERS: The conference strongly encourages the submission of short papers in the field of mobile computing and wireless networking that present revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing assumptions prevalent among the research community. These challenges papers should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting avenues and influence the direction of future research. Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Challenges papers will be reviewed by the MobiCom program committee and will be part of the technical program and published in ACM MobiCom proceedings. They should be submitted using the same submission procedure adopted for the full papers. The title of these papers must start with the word "Challenge:" i.e., "Challenge: Rest of the Title." The setting is informal. Topics of interest are the same as research topics in the SIGCOMM conference call for papers. Although anyone can submit a poster, preference will be given to posters where the primary contribution is from one or more students. The SIGCOMM 2011 Poster and Demo committee will review all demo proposals. At the conference, a student must present student posters. Authors of accepted papers in SIGCOMM 2011 may not submit a poster on the same work in those papers. Student Research Competition The SIGCOMM poster session will also serve as an ACM student research competition. Meanwhile, high speed vehicles such as airplanes and high speed trains play an increasingly important role in people’s lives, since they provide a relatively stable and spacious environment for long distance travel. As a result, there will be a strong demand for broadband wireless communications (BWC) for high speed vehicles to provide information and onboard entertainment services to passengers. BWC is also needed in vehicle control systems for operational information such as fault sensor measurements and diagnostics, video surveillance, and so on. Interesting research areas and various challenges arise when designing BWC systems for high speed vehicles. For example, a new network structure is needed since a direct transmission signal between the passenger and infrastructure-base-station experiences serious deterioration when traveling through the speeding vehicle. Distributed antenna and radio over fiber can be employed for vehicle-to-infrastructure communication. Moreover, due to the lack of accurate channel information, innovative radio resource allocation schemes are also needed at the infrastructure-base-station to assign resources to high speed vehicles. The fast movement of high speed vehicles through cellular networks causes frequent handovers and drop-offs, degrading the user experience. This prompts the need for designing fast and reliable handover and random access schemes. In addition, novel physical layer techniques of BWC in high speed mobile environments need to be considered. In particular, there is a strong need to evaluate the effect of Doppler spread and revisit the noncoherent coding, modulation and MIMO schemes. Therefore, BWC for high speed vehicles is a pressing research topic that has huge applications. It is imperative to develop the key techniques enabling BWC for high speed vehicles. The goal of this issue is to bring together the most updated research contributions in this area. We are soliciting high quality, original and unpublished work in BWC for high speed vehicles, especially those pushing the envelope in terms of vehicle speed and communication bandwidth. Risen from the ashes of traditional MANETs, which failed to cope with the variability of a network solely made up from mobile users, opportunistic communications have recently stood out and gained a lot of research attention. Opportunistic networking is the enabling strategy for communications in a mobile network. The idea of opportunistically exploiting extemporary contacts among the users of the network poses new and challenging problems, as well as providing with novel and promising opportunities, to the networking research community. The AOC 2011 workshop will be a meeting point for people working in the area and it will constitute a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and application developers, both from industry and academia. The AOC 2011 workshop will have a primary interest in the new directions of opportunistic communications represented by mobile social networking, content-centric networking, and participatory sensing. More in general, papers tackling issues related to opportunistic networking and computing are welcome. Original papers addressing both theoretical and practical aspects of autonomic and opportunistic communications are solicited, as well as papers describing prototype implementations and deployments. Meanwhile, the explosive growth of data traffic for the current and emerging user services creates a number of issues in mobile networks. In particular, the key challenges for improving efficiency, scalability and reliability are the development of performance modeling methods and the accurate measurement of performance of deployed mobile networks. Examples of complex networks are found in living organisms, in engineering systems, as well as in social networks. Most of the real-world systems have the required degree of complexity to be called "complex systems". Complexity may have to do with the intricate dynamics of the interacting components, with the non-trivial properties of the underlying network topology, or with the sheer size of the system itself. Despite the numerous workshops and conferences related to network science, it is still a set of loosely interacting communities. Those communities would benefit from better interactions. Simplex aims at triggering different computer science communities (e.g. communication networks, distributed systems) to propose research areas and topics that should be tackled from the network science perspective. We also seek contributions from network science that are relevant to solve practical computer science problems. Two types of contributions are foreseen from prospective authors. The first type would consist of use-cases of theoretical tools and methods to solve practical problems. Such contributions should be as usable as possible by practitioners in the related field. The second type of contributions would come from practitioners that have identified a problem that may be solved by tools from network sciences. The point of such contributions is to make the network sciences community aware of the importance of a high-impact problem, and to suggest means by which the problem may be solved by the network science community. Both contributions should stimulate interaction between theoreticians and practitioners, and also have high potential impact in either field. Conf. on Software Engineering (ICSE) Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are a fundamental building-block of the upcoming Internet of Things, as they enable seamless integration of the digital and physical worlds. Despite the interest raised by this decade-old research topic, the development of WSN software is still carried out in a rather primitive fashion, by building software directly atop the operating system and by relying on the individual, hard-earned programming skills. WSN developers must face not only the functional application requirements but also a number of challenging, non-functional requirements and constraints resulting from scarce re- sources. The heterogeneity of network nodes, the unpredictable envi- ronmental influences, and the large size of the network further add to the difficulties. In the WSN community there is a growing awareness of the need for methodologies, techniques, and abstractions that simplify the develop- ment task and increase the confidence in the correctness and perfor- mance of the resulting software. Software engineering (SE) support is therefore sought, not only to ease the development task but also to make it more reliable, dependable, and repeatable. Nevertheless, this topic has received so far very little attention by the SE community. The aim of SESENA11 is to attract researchers belonging to both the SE and WSN communities, not only to exchange their recent research re- sults on the topic, but also to stimulate discussion about the core open problems and to define a shared research agenda. The workshop welcomes both research contributions and position statements. The for- mer will allow discussing in technical depth novel results with an au- dience composed of both SE and WSN researchers. The latter will pro- vide the opportunity for presenting open problems, provocative views, or previously-unexplored ideas in an informal fashion. SESENA11 will also include a "speakers' corner" session composed by impromptu pre- sentations where any of the attendees (including those without an ac- cepted paper) will be given a chance to present their own views in very short statements (e.g., 2-4 minutes). This forms a framework on harmonization of results obtained separately in different areas of network research like network performance evaluation, architecture and protocol design, and low layer network design. The conference goal is in the identification, investigation and integration of new algorithms, approaches, architectures, methods and mechanisms to enable proper and efficient operation of a next-generation IP-based wireless network. Therefore, wireless networks and their interaction with wired networks shall be widely examined and addressed throughout the conference. The history of NEW2AN dates back to 1993, today it is an established conference featured by proceedings published by Springer LNCS (confirmed) and distinguished keynote speakers. In 2008 NEW2AN promoted newly organized event on Smart Spaces ruSMART ("are you SMART"). In 2011 NEW2AN and ruSMART will be organized again jointly thus allowing boosting of cross-discipline interactions. The NEW2AN/ruSMART 2011 will be held in St. Petersburg, Russia - the meeting point of East and West. Additionally, mobile devices often lack powerful user interfaces to support classical authentication methods. The 3rd International Workshop on Security and Privacy in Spontaneous Interaction and Mobile Device Use (IWSSI/SPMU'2011) provides a forum to discuss these challenges and to put forward an agenda for future research. The general objective for current activity recognition systems is to analyze continuous sensor data streams and to detect and discriminate certain activities of interest, and to reject portions of sensor data that cover unknown or idle activities. A wealth of algorithmic approaches to activity recognition have been developed that employ state-of- the-art signal processing and machine learning techniques. Reviewing the current literature in the field may give the impression that the general problem of activity recognition has almost been solved. State-of-the-art AR systems achieve recognition rates of well beyond 80 or 90 percent across tasks. This opens up the question which other - more challenging - activity recognition problems should be addressed in the future. More generally speaking, this also relates to the question how a future AR system should look like. What will be the challenges of AR that go beyond the aforementioned classification approach and could, for example, comprise a quantitative measure of the quality of performing an activity rather than only detecting an activity? IWFAR 2011, a satellite workshop of Pervasive 2011, is supposed to focus on new "frontiers in activity recognition using pervasive sensing" in the aforementioned sense. We want to stimulate and explore the creativity of the community regarding new applications and approaches to AR. The latter could comprise radically new procedures like, for example, biologically inspired AR methods or rigorously exploiting general time-series analysis approaches (e.g. from the financial domain). Recent publications in the AR community represent quite promising starting points (cf. e.g. time-delay embedding for the analysis of repetitive activity patterns, which was inspired by the physics of complex systems). IWFAR 2011 provides a forum for researchers and practitioners to gather and present new ideas, and discuss aspects related to applications and techniques that go beyond classic activity recognition. Covering a more or less "emerging" field, expected contributions would also cover more speculative ideas that are too specific for the broader audience of the main conference. For urban planners and designers, these accumulations of digital traces are valuable sources of data in capturing the pulse of the city in an astonishing degree of temporal and spatial detail. Yet this condition of the hybrid city – which operates simultaneously in the digital and physical realms – also poses difficult questions about privacy, scale, and design, among many others. These questions must be addressed as we move toward achieving an augmented, fine-grained understanding of how the city functions – socially, economically and yes, even psychologically. One line arises from the analysis of physical data captured directly by sensors of real-world behaviors. These data include streams of GPS and WiFi sensors, accelerometers, compasses, gyroscopes, audio, and video, which are often processed to infer location, motion, co-presence, and identity. Another line arises from data captured about online behaviors. These include email messages, web browsing histories, application traces, and keystroke loggers, online calendars, document repositories, tagging databases, and social networks. Analysis of online data sources is performed to infer topics of interest, retrieve information, and enhance collaboration. We see these two data stream types coming together in the near future. Smartphones have made it easy to collect physical data about people. Web 2.0 technologies have encouraged users to curate more information online. Likewise, more and more common objects are being tagged with RFID tags or barcodes. Considering the recent progress in mobile communications (increased bandwidth for cell phone networks, as well as urban wireless broadband networks), Internet access will very likely become a commodity accessible from most real-world devices. This convergence of physical computing devices (wireless sensor networks, mobile phones, embedded computers, etc.) and the Internet provides new design opportunities and challenges, as digital communication networks will soon not only contain virtual data (images, text, etc.), but also real objects. While the "Internet of Things" has become a well-known brand for a set of research issues in the pervasive and ubiquitous computing communities, the focus of this research theme has been on establishing connectivity in a variety of challenging and constrained networking environments. Our hypothesis is that the "Web of Things" is the next logical step in the ongoing evolution of how pervasive and ubiquitous computing have enabled new applications and provided new opportunities. The Web of Things takes the next step from establishing connectivity and thus the ability to communicate with Things, to a vision where Things become seamlessly integrated into the Web, not just through Web-based user interfaces of specific applications, but by simply blending into the information space created by the Web and its architectural principles. Programming mobile and pervasive applications is more than than building client-server or peer-peer systems with mobility, and it is more than providing usable interfaces for mobile devices that may interact with the surrounding context. It includes aspects such as disconnected and low-attention working, spontaneous collaboration, evolving and uncertain security regimes, and integration into services and workflows hosted on the internet. In the past, efforts have focused on the form of human-device interfaces that can be built using mobile and distributed computing tools, or on human computer interface design based on, for example, the limited screen resolution and real estate provided by a smartphone. This topic is of particular interest at this time because advertising is considered by multiple researchers as one main business models for pervasive computing and has recently been called the "Killer application for the 21st century". The market is rapidly growing, and major companies (Apple iAd, JCDecaux, Wall, ClearChannel, Google etc.) are invested in pervasive advertising projects. The main hinderance today is that advertisers lack the technological skills, and pervasive computing researchers and practitioners lack the advertising knowledge and experience. Furthermore, these groups rarely talk to each other. Based on the success of previous workshops we envision to continue and further establish the workshop series as a prime venue bringing together people from academia and practice, hence driving forward research in the field of Pervasive Advertising. We believe that our research community has a responsibility to contribute towards a joint understanding of how pervasive advertising of the future will look like. To this end, this workshop looks at the future of advertising from the perspective of pervasive computing. After the initial hype, at the current stage, several ongoing research efforts are focusing on the several open management aspects of the Cloud, such as interoperability, scalability, reliability, power management, and confidentiality/auditability, with the final goal to make Cloud technologies and services more mature so to boost and to facilitate a more widespread industrial uptake of Cloud systems. Despite the several recent efforts on Cloud systems, it is still unclear whether current solutions are able to withstand the abrupt and unpredictably changes imposed by the emergent Cloud application scenarios, where services and the whole software stacks (from the kernel upward) have to scale up and down fast by exploiting highly distributed and heterogeneous virtualized resources. The ambition and mission of MoCS 2011 is to put on the foreground all above issues, and to bring together different ongoing research efforts on the management of Cloud systems. This year, special focus will be on the challenging management issues related to the delivery of efficient Green computing solutions over the Cloud. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following: * Novel adaptive management solutions for scalable, maintainable, cost-effective Cloud provision, at all software stack layers; * New models and paradigms for the management of Cloud services at the host level and within/between data centres (intra-/inter-domain); * Analytical and simulation models and tools to measure systems ability to scale and to achieve relevant energy savings; * New methods and tools able to identify and enforce optimal trade- offs between performance, energy consumption, safety, and security; * Emerging standards for interoperability (resource virtualization, specific computing interfaces, etc.), also between public and private Clouds; * Experimentation testbeds, field trials and empirical evaluations, and measurement studies. Mobile applications are rapidly developing and becoming more and more important. They consist of software that runs on a smart phone or tablet and perform certain tasks for the user of the cellular phone. In this way, the user can use the application in its personal situation and can take advantage of the mobile phone’s capabilities, such as the camera, positioning and navigation or network access. Now, mobile devices are becoming even smarter. They are computer networked and user reconfigurable. A device can be seen as part of a cloud or operate autonomously. It is a device, that consists of CPU, storage and network access and has the intelligence to perform services both reactive and proactive. It can also be seen as a part of a smart environment, i.e. interact with a physical world consisting of sensors and actuators, displays and computational elementsthat are connected through a continuous network. Currently, smartphones with more advanced computing capabilities and connectivity than classic mobile phones offer more functionalities and run smarter applications. Mobile platforms comprise an increasing number of different sensors such as photosensors, accelerometers, gyroscopes etc, thus allowing sophisticated contextualized applications. In addition, users as well as developers benefit from an increasing number of market places and online stores for mobile applications. The concept of a mobile "app" that can be purchased via centralized hubs is already very common among the growing number of users. Ensuring high connectivity within the network is vital for real applications. Moreover, for many applications, sensor networks cannot operate in complete isolation. There must be a way enabling a monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced by the sensor network, and even to interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read the sensed values instantaneously, fix some inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By connecting the sensor network to an existing network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet, mobile network infrastructures, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and notably the global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be straightforward. The integration of RFID and WSN is one of the most promising technologies that will play an important role in emerging the Internet of the Things (IoT). For example, in a healthcare application, RFID tags can be used to track the elders whereas the sensors are used to monitor the elders’ conditions. However, many questions need answers, and many challenges must be tackled before such interconnection becomes effective. Suitability of IP standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks, doors will be opened to new vulnerabilities. An intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore, but it might remotely launch attacks. Security is thus a very important aspect that must be considered. Routing, QoS, and interoperability are also important and challenging issues in the new heterogeneous systems. Connecting different WSNs is another issue that needs to be considered. A WSN might get partitioned into distinct segments due to battery exhaustion of many sensors. Providing mechanisms to restore connectivity by connecting those segments is of high importance. Also, an isolated segment of sensor nodes that cannot reach its sink can exploit the existence of a neighboringreachable WSN to deliver its sensed information. This workshop is a forum for researchers, academics, and industrials to debate the different issues related to the interconnection of wireless sensor networks, and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions. * * * * *Topics* Topics of the workshop consist of all aspects related to WSN, with more focus on the interconnection and integration of WSN to other networks, as well as the connection between WSNs and connectivity issues. Many in the field argued that the Internet protocols were impractical for the resource constrained devices that were being embedded in the physical world; that the end-to-end architecture was inappropriate for the localized algorithms and in-network processing required to achieve robustness and scalability; and that an architecture designed to accommodate a wide range of applications was unnecessary as sensor networks would be tailored to specific target applications. In the past couple years, the Smart Grid push has placed a pressing need to deploy networks that have an unprecedented scale when compared to existing IP networks (e.g., 10 million end points within a single network targeted by utility manufacturers), allow multi-vendor interoperability, and utilize low-cost communication devices. Sensor networks are considered a natural fit for Smart Grid applications such as Automated Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Home Area Networking (HAN). To address this need, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) is working with researchers and practitioners to standardize protocols, such as 6LoWPAN and ROLL, for constrained networks. This workshop solicits articles that describe early experiences with such standards, papers that describe sensor network applications built on top of these standards, as well as research proposals regarding how to extend the standards. Topics of Interest Authors are invited to submit papers for presentation at the workshop. Wireless vehicular communications has been identified as a key technology for increasing road safety and transport efficiency, and providing Internet access on the move to ensure wireless ubiquitous connectivity. The potential of this technology has been acknowledged with the establishment of ambitious research programs worldwide. The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) currently covers through its areas of interest (Mobile Radio, Transportation Systems and Automotive Electronics) all technical aspects needed to make wireless vehicular communications a reality. As a result, the IEEE VTS society has decided to establish a technical symposium on wireless vehicular communications. The IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Vehicular Communications (WiVeC) covers all vehicular wireless communications aspects of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Person (V2P) communications, including implications on transport efficiency and safety, automotive electronics, liability issues, standardizations efforts and spectrum assignment. After the successful 2007 (Baltimore), 2008 (Calgary) and 2010 (Taipei) editions, the fourth IEEE WiVeC symposium will be co-located with the 74th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference 2011 Fall conference, and will take place at the Hilton Union Square Hotel in San Francisco on the 5th and 6th of September 2011. Combined registrations packages will be offered for WiVeC and VTC events. It welcomes original, high-quality works on different perspectives, including performance analysis and simulation, algorithms and protocol design, optimization theory and application, information theoretic analysis including capacity scaling, for all forms of wireless networks: cellular, metropolitan, ad hoc, delay-tolerant, mesh, sensor networks as well as any combination of these. Contributions to the symposium should improve the state-of-the-art in design, analysis, dimensioning and operations of wireless network by providing insights into theoretical aspects as well as providing practical methods and tools. All forms of wireless networks are of interest: from cellular wide-area and local-area networks to dense and sparse ad-hoc networks; domain specific vehicular, public-transport and personal-area networks as well as application-specific sensor networks. Technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research, not currently under review by another conference are solicited. The submission will be handled via EDAS system (http://edas.info). Only PDF files are acceptable; please make sure that the paper prints without problems (take care to embed all required fonts, etc.). The growth of Internet shows no signs of slowing down and it steadily becomes the cause of a new pervasive paradigm in computing and communications. This new paradigm enhances the traditional Internet into a smart Internet of Things (IoT) created around intelligent interconnections of diverse objects in the physical world, such as vehicles, cellphones, habitats and habitat occupants, through low-cost information gathering devices, such as sensors and RFID tags, that facilitate fast-paced interactions among the objects themselves as well as the objects and persons in any place and at any time. IoT will usher a wide range of smart applications and services to cope with many of the challenges that individuals and organizations face in their everyday lives. For example, remote healthcare monitoring systems will help alleviate the severe shortage of healthcare personnel in an ageing society; intelligent transportation systems will help reduce traffic congestion and inevitably ills caused by it such as air-pollution; smart distribution systems from utility grids to supply chains will improve the quality and reduce the cost of their respective goods and services; tagged objects can be recycled more efficiently by being retrieved from bulk waste disposal, and so on. These applications would dramatically change the way our societies function and thus have a big impact on many aspects of people’s life in the years to come. IoT is not a mere extension of today’s Internet or an internet of Internet systems. It represents intelligent end-to-end systems that enable smart solutions and as such it covers a diverse range of technologies, including sensing, communications, networking, computing, information processing, and intelligent control technologies. To make IoT a reality, significant research needs to be conducted within and across these technological aspects of IoT. This has recently motivated a voluminous amount of research activities in the hot field and this Feature Topic Issue intends to capture and expose it to the IEEE ComMag readership. Scope of the issue This feature topic issue aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art development in technology, application, and standardization in the field of the Internet of Things, and present an insight of future research opportunities and challenges in this field. The feature issue will consider original survey and research articles written in a tutorial style. Tightly coupled to the physical world, constrained systems need different kinds of programming, of communication and of interfacing. This workshop is focused on resource constrained systems, specifically those used as collaboration systems. Conf. on Software Engineering (ICSE) Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are a fundamental building-block of the upcoming Internet of Things, as they enable seamless integration of the digital and physical worlds. Despite the interest raised by this decade-old research topic, the development of WSN software is still carried out in a rather primitive fashion, by building software directly atop the operating system and by relying on the individual, hard-earned programming skills. WSN developers must face not only the functional application requirements but also a number of challenging, non-functional requirements and constraints resulting from scarce re- sources. The heterogeneity of network nodes, the unpredictable envi- ronmental influences, and the large size of the network further add to the difficulties. In the WSN community there is a growing awareness of the need for methodologies, techniques, and abstractions that simplify the develop- ment task and increase the confidence in the correctness and perfor- mance of the resulting software. Software engineering (SE) support is therefore sought, not only to ease the development task but also to make it more reliable, dependable, and repeatable. Nevertheless, this topic has received so far very little attention by the SE community. The aim of SESENA11 is to attract researchers belonging to both the SE and WSN communities, not only to exchange their recent research re- sults on the topic, but also to stimulate discussion about the core open problems and to define a shared research agenda. The workshop welcomes both research contributions and position statements. The for- mer will allow discussing in technical depth novel results with an au- dience composed of both SE and WSN researchers. The latter will pro- vide the opportunity for presenting open problems, provocative views, or previously-unexplored ideas in an informal fashion. SESENA11 will also include a "speakers' corner" session composed by impromptu pre- sentations where any of the attendees (including those without an ac- cepted paper) will be given a chance to present their own views in very short statements (e.g., 2-4 minutes). In order to cope with future demand increases as well as to provide a more robust and efficient way of delivering and distributing electricity, developing smart grid has become an urgent global priority. In the past few years, governments have stepped up efforts to promote smart grid as a viable solution to future energy problems. Standards organizations are also shaping the development of smart grid by defining the characteristics of smart grid. At the same time, the industry begins to invest in enabling technologies for smart grid. With the growth of alternative energy generation and storage, the smart grid system will have to be able to intelligently integrate and control the different elements of the grid so as to realize the full potential of the system. Communication infrastructures are at the core of the smart ! grid as they will empower the legacy power grid with the capability of supporting two-way energy and information flow, isolating and restoring power outages more quickly, facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid and empowering the consumer with tools for optimizing their energy consumption. With most of the framework defined, there are still many important issues which need to be resolved before smart grid can be operationally ready for the market. We plan this special issue to help address that need, and would like the special issue to focus on recent advances as well as survey papers in communication infrastructures for smart grid. Scope The papers in this special issue will focus on research and experiments in various aspects of smart grid communication infrastructures. The workshop, hosted at the University of British Columbia (UBC), will continue to focus on emerging research topics, controversial ideas, and future research directions in the area of multimedia systems research. As in previous years, we will maintain the focused single-track format a setting that stimulates lively discussions among the senior and junior participants. NOSSDAV encourages experimental research based on real systems and real data sets. Public availability of the source code and data sets discussed in papers presented at NOSSDAV is highly encouraged. For NOSSDAV 2011, we will accept papers on broad ranges of topics related to the transmission and presentation of digital audio/video objects. We are particularly interested in soliciting articles that discuss system-level support for distributed social media, as well as papers that focus on enabling multimedia applications in distributed cloud. Other topics of interest include (but are not restricted to): * OS, middleware and network support * Overlay networks * Media streaming, distribution and storage support * Web 2.0 systems and social networks * Media sensor and ad hoc networks / embedded systems * Multicore architecture support * Wireless and mobile multimedia systems / network processor support * Networked GPUs, graphics and virtual environments * Networked games / real-time immersive systems * Multimedia communications and system security * Grid/Cloud computing support Please contact the workshop co-chairs to check if your topic is within the scope of NOSSDAV. Papers will be judged on their relevance, technical content and correctness, and the clarity of presentation of the research. Papers should not be under review at another venue nor previously published elsewhere. Submissions should be at most SIX pages, using standard ACM proceedings style. We expect these submissions to be the kernel of what will eventually lead to full-length papers at high-quality conferences or journals.
