Currently, the GHG emissions produced by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry alone are said to be equivalent to the GHG emissions of the entire aviation industry. It is estimated that one small computer server generates as much GHG as a sport utility vehicle (SUV). Furthermore, with the increasing demand for higher data rates, the energy consumption for the ICT industry is increasing by 16-20% per year, and the energy costs for mobile network operators can already be as high as half of their annual operating budgets. Since the GHG footprint of the ICT sector is dominated by electricity consumption, an obvious way to reduce emissions is to focus on efficient energy consumption and use as much electricity from renewable sources as possible. In addition, the role of green communications and networking technologies includes not only the emission reduction and energy savings in products and services, but also enabling low GHG emissions in other industries, such as electric power. Indeed, networks are crucial technologies for a smart power grid, which monitors, protects and optimizes the operation of its interconnected elements from end to end, with two-way flow of electricity and information to create an automated and distributed energy delivery network. This Workshop on "Green Communications and Networking" provides a forum for discussions of all these most recent developments and brings together industry and academia, engineers and researchers. Leveraged by the control and mobility of robots, the networking process and applications embrace a whole new set of possibilities. Until now, the success of P2P paradigms has been mainly in traditional wired network environments. With the advance of modern wireless and mobile communications (e.g., WLAN, MANET, WiMAX, 3G, 3.5G, and emerging 4G), there is an increasing interest for mobile users with broadband access to participate in P2P services anywhere anytime through their mobile handheld devices. Wireless mobile networks have special characteristics, such as highly variable connectivity, disconnection, location-dependency, energy and resource sensitivity, communication asymmetry, high bandwidth expense, and so on. All these pose research challenges that do not exist in traditional network settings. New techniques are thus required in order to leverage mobile P2P computing for efficient and reliable applications and services. Mobile P2P is a cross-disciplinary research involving networking, information dissemination, databases, and security. The main goal of the workshop is to gather scientists from these areas together to foster collaboration and sparkle discussion on various aspects of mobile P2P, including but not limited to, mobile users' scenarios and usage cases, overlay design, development and deployment, mobile data dissemination, mobile database management, and location- based information services. The workshop also aims to discuss mobile P2P in various networking environments such as vehicular, cellular and/or large-scale heterogeneous networks. It is believed that holding it in conjunction with INFOCOM will provide the community with recent advances in IP video that will impact the media networks of the future. The workshop will address the Future Media Internet and IP-based TV, which will not only radically change the telecommunications and the entertainment industries, but they are also expected to stimulate and enhance creativity, professional productivity and community relations. In particular, the workshop intends to have ample time for discussion amongst participants on research topics of emerging trends in the area of seamless media delivery and how the networks, current and future, will support the converged multimedia. The workshop encourages submissions to attract attendance from both academia and industry. Thus, the workshop seeks innovative technical papers that consolidate and present the leading-edge research prototype development, deployment and performance studies in the following areas: - Content centric network architectures for scalable multimedia content delivery - Distributed caching in the network for multimedia content - Search and retrieval of multimedia objects over distributed networks - Scalable multimedia compression, transmission, concealment - Network coding and streaming - Encoding technologies for maintaining the integrity and optimise the quality of experience - Cross-layer dynamic adaptation and end-to-end QoS issues for heterogeneous networks - Reputation, trust and incentives in peer-to-peer streaming systems and sensor networks - Network design impacts of IP-based video convergence - Architectures for converged systems especially those targeting multi screens and combining mobility - Video convergence, Mobile TV, Mobile Social TV applications and interactivity - Video Content Distribution, Networks and P2P architectures for distributed services - User experience and user experience design - Innovative methods for evolving IP-based TV services (including algorithmic aspects of computer networking oriented to billing, pricing and advertising models, large-scale data management, etc.) Additionally, the workshop plans to bring a distinguished invited speaker to present views on the convergence of future media networks and IP-based TV especially in emerging markets. However, WSNs may operate in inhospitable environments and become prone to sensor failures which not only can degrade the quality of coverage but also disrupt the data traffic. To address such a problem, most approaches in the literature deploy redundant nodes during network setup and reconfigure the network topology to establish alternate data paths. However, sometimes the network suffers a large scale damage that involves many nodes and would thus create multiple disjoint partitions. For these cases, a provisioned approach for tolerating occasional failures at the network design level will not be effective. A similar scenario happens when an application can be leveraged by engaging a number of standalone WSNs. For example, the disaster response may involve collaboration among multiple governmental agencies and may need to combine the services of their autonomously-operating WSNs in the search-and-rescue process. Connecting such multiple WSNs or partitions of a damaged WSN is referred to as federation and these networks are called Federated Wireless Sensor Systems (FedSenS). The purpose of this workshop is to establish a platform to exchange ideas among researchers for creation, operation and management of FedSenS involving various heterogeneous sensor and gateway nodes. Topics of Interest Original, unpublished and unsubmitted work is sought in terms of algorithms, techniques, architectures, position papers, visionary approaches and modeling to deploy and maintain FedSenS. The next step for sensor networks is to handle mobility in all possible forms. The workshop will be sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society, Technical Committee on Network Operations and Management (CNOM), the Autonomic Communications Forum, EMANICS, and the POSTECH ITCE (all pending). It is widely agreed that, despite its many successes, the current Internet also has a set of systemic problems, ranging from an upcoming shortage of IP addresses to insufficient security. However, the lack of scalable and agile manageability is arguably more important, as without management, it is impossible to build systems that adapt the services and resources offered in a context-dependent manner. Hence, there is a need of preserving privacy of people yet providing them a sense of security through effective surveillance. Although there has been a significant progress in the field of surveillance research, the issues related to people's privacy have often been overlooked in the past and have only begun to attract the attention of researchers very recently. The goal of this issue is to bring forth the recent advancements in the privacy research for multimedia surveillance. Ubiquitous und Pervasive Computing erfordern die Beherrschung immer komplexer werdender Systeme, die nicht mehr nur statisch konfiguriert oder manuell gesteuert werden können. Hier setzt dieser Workshop an, indem die Anforderungen an solche Systeme, nämlich dynamische Anpassung, Autonomie und Selbst-Eigenschaften thematisiert und ihre Umsetzung diskutiert werden sollen. In diesem Workshop soll insbesondere Raum geschaffen werden, diese Fragen in Kontakt mit aktuellen Main-Stream-Technologien wie SOA, MDA u.a. zu bringen und die Methodenentwicklung thematisieren. Sind Selbstorganisation und Emergenz in solchen Systemen zu unterdrücken oder zu kontrollieren? Sind Selbstorganisation und Emergenz im Systementwurf planbar und wenn ja, mit welchen Methoden und Werkzeugen? Sind Systeme, die für statische Konfiguration und manuelle Steuerung ausgelegt waren, nachträglich mit den gewünschten Eigenschaften automatisierbar und wie sehen Methoden des Re-Design bzw. Re-Engineering aus? Wie arbeiten Methoden und Architekturen zusammen? Anwendungsstudien und praktische Tauglichkeit von Systemen mit Adaptivität, Autonomie und Selbst-Eigenschaften sind von besonderem Interesse, da sie letztendlich über den Erfolg der hier thematisierten Forschungs- und Entwicklungsrichtung entscheidet. Interdisziplinäre Offenheit ist für diesen Workshop ein wesentlicher Schlüssel zum Erfolg. Main-Stream-Techniken, Architekturen und Methoden sollen in Kontakt gebracht werden mit neuen Entwurfsmethoden, die bionisch inspiriert oder von der Complex-Systems-Forschung beeinflusst sind. Doch technische Fragen alleine können nicht maßgeblich für die Durchsetzung einer neuen Technologie sein. Sind Adaptivität und Selbstorganisation auch außerhalb unserer Prototypen, also im großen Maßstab, einsetzbar - können sie alltagstauglich werden? Welche Chancen eröffnen sich für den Einsatz adaptiver und selbstorganisierender IT? Schließlich, und gerade im technischen Kontext viel zu selten betrachtet werden Fragen gesellschaftlicher und rechtlicher Implikationen des Einsatzes solcher Systeme. Im dem Maße, wie wir die Kontrolle an das System abgeben, muss das Vertrauen in die einwandfreie Funktion des Systems wachsen. Wir verfolgen in der Themenwahl für diesen Workshop einen klar interdisziplinären Kurs, der sich damit von verwandten Veranstaltungen abgrenzt, welche eine Auswahl überwiegend technischer Themen vorsehen. Ziel soll sein, die Vielschichtigkeit der neuen adaptiven, selbstorganisierenden Systeme in für die Forschung als auch für die Gesellschaft bedeutenden Aspekten zu beleuchten. ZIEL Dieser Workshop soll die erfolgreiche Workshop-Reihe SAKS, die sich in den Jahren 2006-2010 (darunter bereits zweimal als KiVS-Workshop) dem Thema Selbstorganisation und Adaption widmete, im Rahmen der KiVS 2011 in Kiel fortsetzen. Der Workshop soll eine Bestandsaufnahme von Forschungs- und Entwicklungsaktivitäten im deutschsprachigen Raum bieten. Dabei soll die Kooperation der beteiligten Akteure weiter gestärkt und mittelfristig zu einer höheren internationalen Sichtbarkeit der deutschsprachigen Forschung und Entwicklung auf diesem Gebiet geführt werden. Die Teilnahme von Vertretern aus der Industrie ausdrücklich erwünscht, um den Kontakt zur industriellen Praxis zu intensivieren und gemeinsame Interessen auszuloten. ORGANISATION Die geplante Dauer des Workshops beträgt - je nach Anzahl akzeptierter Beiträge - eine ganzen oder ein bis zwei halbe Tage. Das Workshop-Programm soll aus der Präsentation der ausgewählten Beiträge, einem eingeladenen Vortrag und ggf. einer Podiumsdiskussion bestehen. Current forecasts expect mobile data traffic to grow by 300-500 times more over the next 10 years, whereas the capacity of cellular infrastructure only doubles every 2 years. By 2020, more than half of the revenue in the global broadband industry is likely to be from two business models: wholesale and “two-sided” fees for improved access capacity and quality. Those models require the enforcement of stringent policy control mechanisms for bandwidth management, QoS and service level agreements, according to subscriber policies with real-time perspective on usage, location, device and user type, radio access technology, network capacity and topology. In this area, several research challenges are still to be addressed:  How can the network be made service-, state- and/or context-aware in order to apply specific policies to enhance the end user experience (QoE)?  How can the service provider bridge QoE and QoS, and change the QoS level based on spending limits?  How can different IP flows of the same packet data network (PDN) be routed via different accesses? In addition, how is it possible to move IP flows of the same PDN from one access to another for seamless WLAN offload or for usage of WLAN access to connect to Internet without traversing operator's core network?  How can selected IP traffic be offloaded from the cellular infrastructure and save transmission costs?  How can mobile networks be optimized for mass machine-type communications/applications?  How to optimize the utilization of Digital Dividend (unprecedented amount of spectrum that becomes available as a result of the switchover from analog to digital terrestrial TV)? This timely feature topic issue of IEEE Communications Magazine will bring together researchers from industry, academia and standardization bodies to present and analyze the above challenging issues in the important area of managing traffic for existing and future mobile broadband networks, i.e. within and beyond the existing standardization frameworks (3GPP, 3GPP2, IEEE 802.16, etc.). We are soliciting original research, analysis of live networks or test beds, and survey articles written in a tutorial style, comprehensible to all readers of the magazine. Submissions will undergo a rigorous peer review process. In particular, we claim that there is the need for novel middleware solutions capable of addressing connectivity-level, location-dependent, and context-dependent support aspects, by specifically focusing on tremendously challenging research issues, such as scalability and interoperability in open wide-scale deployment environments, which are all crucial for next generation mobile applications. According to this vision, this special issue intends to disseminate the latest results in the emergent and large research area of middleware for mobile devices and applications, by providing a fresh snapshot of the current state-of-the-art about middleware architectures, mechanisms, algorithms, and integrated frameworks. Practical experiences, extensive experimentation, and lessons learned from deployment over real wide-scale execution environments are welcome, as well as original disruptive proposals and groundbreaking ideas. Instead of looking at them separately, it is useful to arrange a venue for the researchers and practitioners in these two fields to come together and interact. This workshop aims to build this cooperation. Energy Efficiency in Wireless Networks: According to the GESI study, the ICT sector contributes around 2% of global greenhouse gas emissions. To increase the competitiveness, energy efficiency (E2) must also be a design criterion of the network and service architectures. Flexible networks that adapt their capacity to the requirements can lead to significant energy savings. Novel networking paradigms need to be introduced to assure that all components are used with maximum utilization. E2 network architectures will be the cross-layer, cognitive and cooperative aggregation of techniques and mechanisms to provide a communication infrastructure where the energy consumptio n is minimized while guaranteeing the grade of service required by the applications. Along with energy efficiency, spectrum utilization is to be optimized and radiation is to be minimized. In E2Nets, the following topics of energy efficiency in sensor, mesh, and ad-hoc networks are considered: ・ Physical layer techniques, channel or network coding for energy efficiency ・ Methodologies and architectures for energy efficiency ・ Energy-efficiency measures ・ Energy-efficient flooding and multicast ・ Energy-efficient device and service discovery ・ Collaborative, cooperative, cognitive networking protocols for energy efficiency ・ Algorithms for scheduling and resource management ・ Energy harvesting ・ Cognitive networking for energy reduction in large scale environments ・ Device level collaboration and cognition for energy efficiency ・ User mobility modelling to predict and adapt to patterns ・ Hybrid fibre-wireless networks for energy-efficient delivery of wireless signals ・ Energy efficiency using harvesting in sensor, ad hoc, mesh and vehicular networks. To address the other 98% of the global CHG emissions, wireless networks can be used to reduce the energy consumption of industrial, home, office environments, applications. For example, along with the research in low-carbon road transportation technologies, wireless networks can be employed to analyze the traffic jams and help navigators to find a suitable route leading energy savings. To this extent, in this workshop the topics of wireless networks for energy efficiency consist of: ・ ICT for minimization of the energy consumption of other systems such as transportation, houses, offices and industrial buildings. ・ Energy efficient cloud computing and emerging applications, ・ Sensor and ad hoc networks for energy efficiency in industrial/harsh environments ・ Vehicular networks to reduce the CHG emissions ・ ICT for energy-efficient data centers The first workshop in Cape Town with ICC-2010 was well received with approximately 33% acceptance ratio. In the meantime, embedded computing has developed and grown enormously, where tiny autonomous devices, such as wireless sensor nodes, form distributed sensing systems. The next grand challenge is the amalgamation of the Internet and the world of embedded devices to form an Internet of Things (IoT) where all kinds of devices extend the Internet into the physical world. The advent of an interoperable MAC layer (IEEE 802.15.4) and IPv6 connectivity for resource-constraint devices (6LoWPAN) are essential first steps. However, as the number of IoT devices is envisioned to surpass the number of nodes in the Internet by several orders of magnitude, IP connectivity is just a first milestone on the way of designing and developing IoT applications. Beyond basic networking there is a need for unifying concepts, methods, and software infrastructures that allow the efficient development of robust, interoperable, and scalable IoT applications spanning and integrating the Internet and the embedded world. Open issues include discovery, search, and management of services as well as service invocation on IoT devices in a highly scalable manner. Another fundamental aspect is the unified description of the semantics of the services provided by the embedded devices. While existing Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA) are designed for PC class devices, there is a lack of light-weight approaches suitable for the resource constraints of embedded devices. In particular, studies on network routing and communication algorithm for V2V and V2I have posed various challenges. Most of the current works on V2V and V2I communications mainly focus on non-IP data communications. Peer-to-peer computing is an encroaching domain of very large scale distributed computing. The concept of P2P computing was developed to enable content distribution which is beyond the means of traditional client-server systems. Since then a number of P2P applications have been evolved. File sharing, voice communication, audio, and video streaming are the popular P2P applications. As a P2P system is a large scale, extremely dynamic, and decentralized system, besides the core logic, a wide range of research issues have to be addressed for deployment. Due to advances in wireless communication technologies, campus and enterprise-wide availability of wireless networks is already a reality. In some cases, an entire metropolitan area is covered by a single wireless network. Smartphones and handheld devices, equipped with modern communication interfaces, allow wireless data access from anywhere and at any time. Those devices and the associated data access services are attracting more consumers due to their decreasing prices. As a result, the demand to port network applications for mobile handheld devices is increasing. However, in spite of many interesting technological developments, wireless networks are still constrained by several factors, such as limited and expensive bandwidth and variable wireless channel conditions. Additionally, capability of mobile devices is restricted by their limited computing power, smaller memory and permanent storage, and extremely small power source. Dynamics of P2P networks simply worsen the scenario and make the deployment of P2P applications in wireless networks challenging. This special issue aims to portrait a picture of the recent studies in the realm of theories, systems and, solutions for P2P networks and applications in wireless and mobile environment. Thus, they enable brand new and promising sensing applications, such as traffic reporting, relief to environmental monitoring, distributed surveillance, only to mention a few promising (and not the most visionary) service provisioning scenarios. The design, implementation, and deployment of dynamic, opportunistic, collaborative, scalable, efficient, reliable, robust, and secured mobile sensing applications for VSNs, especially over realistic and large-scale deployment environments such as municipalities, presents extraordinary challenges to the pervasive and mobile computing research community. The WiMAX, LTE, and LTE-Advanced standardizations have already processed toward this direction but still require significant improvements. Over the years, the wireless networks have not only expanded in their sizes, such as geographical area and number of nodes, but also in the variety of services, users, and deployment environments. Small mobile devices, such as smart phones, that allow instantaneous high speed information access and data processing have radically changed the way of our living. Moreover, the development of ad-hoc networks allows the easy formation of wireless networks for information sharing and data gathering. Due to various factors, wireless networks are constantly changing. For example, the service pattern, workload, available resources (power supply, bandwidth, beacons, nodes etc.) are not fixed. Therefore, it is important to be able to access and manage the quality of services for ensuring the optimal performance of the networks. There are basically two aspects to QoS study in wireless networks. One aspect is accessing and diagnosing the status of the networks and evaluating the current level of service quality. The other aspect is to study the network design to handle the changing factors of the networks so that the quality of service is optimized under the constraint of the available resources and service pattern. The quality of service management and diagnosis of a network is closely related to wide range of fundamental issues such as network topology, routing protocols, resource allocation, communication layer, and working environments etc. The contributed papers will study both practical and theoretical models and algorithms for ensuring the high quality of service in wireless networks and the approaches for quality of service evaluation and diagnosis. This special issue of the International Journal of Network Management is seeking new and unpublished contributions addressing issues in Quality of Service Management in Emerging Wireless Networks including, but not limited to: * Fault diagnosis * Diagnosis middleware * Reconfigurable networks * Performance evaluation * QoS evaluation model * Self-healing networks * Adaptable resource management * Network simulation platforms * QoS-oriented network planning * QoS-based routing protocols * Data management * Mobility management * Security and privacy Papers describing current research and practice are solicited. Area A: Hardware/Software Integration and Co-Design. This track focuses on design methodologies and tools for hardware/software integration and co-design of modern embedded systems for real-time applications. Such systems are increasingly complex and heterogeneous, both in terms of architectures and applications they need to support, so new approaches aimed at their efficient design and optimization are in great demand. General topics relevant to this track include various architecture- and software-related issues of embedded systems design which include, but are not limited to, architecture description languages and tools, WCET analysis, software architectures, design space exploration, synthesis and optimization. Of special interest are SoC design for real-time applications, special purpose functional units, specialized memory structures, multi-core chips and communication aspects, FPGA simulation and prototyping, software simulation and compilation for novel architectures and applications, as well as power, timing and predictability analyses. Area B: Wireless Sensor Networks. Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) has emerged as a new information paradigm for distributed real-time and embedded systems. Example applications include environment monitoring, emergency response, critical infrastructure protection, medical care, intelligent transportation, and smart manufacturing. The WSN track aims at fostering interaction and collaboration of researchers and exchanging new ideas in various aspects of sensor network research. The WSN track of RTAS is open to submissions addressing any major aspect of sensor networks. Submissions concerning real-time and embedded issues are encouraged, but not required. Authors are invited to submit original works that demonstrate current research on various aspects of wireless sensor network systems. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): sensor network applications and deployment experiences; sensor network architectures and protocols; programming abstractions; operating systems and middleware for sensor networks; real-time operation issues in sensor networks; distributed networked sensing; actuation and control; power and energy management/harvesting; wide-area sensing services; detection, classification, and estimation; localization and time synchronization; security and privacy. Mobile Computing is expected to encompass heterogeneous access technologies and the Internet backbone for providing multimedia services to both mobile and stationary users. It poses significant technical challenges to enable broadband wireless access with seamless and ubiquitous coverage and quality-of-service provisioning. The objective of this symposium is to serve as an international forum for experts from academia and industry to exchange ideas and results on research and development, and to promote and accelerate standardization, applications, and services of current and future wireless communication networks. Prospective authors are invited to submit original contributions on all aspects in wireless networks, applications and services. Topics of Interest The Mobile Computing Symposium welcomes original contributions not published or reviewed by any other journals or conferences. Papers dealing with fundamental problems associated with the topical areas and describing novel uses of communication and computation theory to solve the problems are of special interest. Full papers should be restricted to 6 camera-ready pages (in 10 pt font, double column, US letter size, 8.5 x 11 inches, ACM format), including text, figures and references. Authors should use only standard fonts, i.e. Times Roman, Courier, Symbol, Helvetica or equivalent. Papers must be submitted electronically via EDAS (http://edas.info/N9433). All papers must include title, complete contact information of all authors, abstract and up to 5 keywords on the cover page. The corresponding author must be clearly identified. The overall goal of the conference remains tightly coupled with the original aims of the field, to address a set of related technologies and concepts that help integrate healthcare more seamlessly into everyday life, regardless of space and time. To achieve this, it is necessary to take a multidisciplinary approach to Pervasive Healthcare Technology research and development. The Pervasive Healthcare Community has a broad scope of research topics and concerns: - identifying and understanding problems from a technological, social, and medical perspective (with a particular emphasis on understanding and supporting patient needs); - design, implementation, and evaluation of supporting hardware and software infrastructures, algorithms, and applications; and - organisational strategies that facilitate integration of Pervasive Healthcare Technology into the healthcare enterprise. The 2011 Pervasive Healthcare conference aims to gather technology experts, practitioners, industry and international authorities contributing towards the assessment, development and deployment of pervasive medical based technologies, standards and procedures. The theme of this year’s conference is: Coping with the Challenges and Opportunities within Pervasive E-Healthcare (COPE), with a special focus on pervasive healthcare management and its ability to deliver timely, quality based information to medical practitioners in providing high levels of patient care. The challenges and opportunities within e-Healthcare are immense. A multidisciplinary and coordinated approach is needed from 1) user requirements, 2) technology development and 3) application integration, to help deliver a successful pervasive healthcare management system. Traditional healthcare environments are extremely complex and challenging to manage, as they are required to cope with an assortment of patient conditions under various circumstances with a number of resource constraints. Pervasive healthcare technologies seek to respond to a variety of these pressures by successfully integrating them within existing health care environments. Technologies, standards and procedures on their own provide little and or no meaningful service. Full papers (up to 8 pages submissions) - Full papers are submissions describing results and original research work not submitted or published elsewhere in one of the four main categories listed below. Full papers should properly place the work within the field, cite related work, and clearly indicate the innovative aspects of the work and its contribution to the field. 2. Posters (up to 4 pages submissions) - Authors are invited to submit work in progress whose preliminary results are already interesting to Pervasive Health audience. The poster track will give Pervasive Health attendees a way to learn about ongoing research initiatives and will provide presenters with an excellent opportunity to receive invaluable direct feedback from experts. 3. Demos (2 pages submissions) - The demos track will showcase the latest developments and prototypes related to the topics of interest of the conference. The expected demo submissions should describe the technical details of the demo alongside its contribution to the healthcare domain.. 4. Position Papers (2 pages submissions) - Position papers are envisioned to provide insight into the lessons learnt from current (industrial, practitioners, government, etc.) pervasive healthcare practice. The position papers track is envisioned to provide the view of practitioners to the pervasive health community in order to have a more clear understanding about the real needs of healthcare operators and in this way shorten the gap between technologists and the every-day needs of practitioners. 5. Workshops (2 pages submissions) Several workshops will be run in conjunction with the conference. The purpose of these workshops is to discuss work in progress and explore opportunities for new research related to pervasive healthcare. Proposals for workshops should be submitted directly to the workshops co-chairs, and proposals should indicate the preferred duration for the workshop (half/full-day). 6. Doctoral Consortium (4 pages) – We are please to announce the first Pervasive Healthcare Doctoral Consortium. This one day event will enable doctoral students to present and reflect on their work alongside other doctoral students and a panel of experts.
