New computing and communication technologies have brought up a multitude of challenging application areas, including mobile computing, inter-enterprise collaborations, ubiquitous services, service-oriented architectures, autonomous and self-adapting systems, peer-to-peer systems, just to name a few. New challenges include the need for novel abstractions supporting the development, deployment, management and interoperability of evolutionary and complex applications and services, such as those bridging the physical/virtual worlds. Therefore, the linkage between applications, platforms and users through multi-disciplinary user requirements (like security, privacy, usability, efficiency, safety, semantic and pragmatic interoperability of data and services, dependability, trust and self-adaptivity) becomes of special interest. It is envisaged that future complex applications will far exceed those of today in terms of these requirements. The DAIS conference series addresses all aspects of distributed applications, including their design, implementation and operation, the supporting middleware, appropriate software engineering methodologies and tools, as well as experimental studies and practice reports. This time we welcome in particular contributions on architectures, models, technologies and platforms for large scale and complex distributed applications and services that are related to the latest trends towards bridging the physical/virtual worlds based on flexible and versatile service architectures and platforms. DAIS'10 is the 10th event in a series of successful international conferences which started in 1997. It will provide a forum for researchers, application and platform service vendors and users, to review, discuss and learn about new approaches, trends, concepts and experiences in the fields of distributed computing. CONFERENCE THEMES DAIS'10 solicits high quality papers reporting research results and/or experience reports. All papers must be original, unpublished, and not submitted simultaneously for publication elsewhere. Recently, it has been reported that energy costs can account for as much as half of a mobile service provider's annual operating expenses. If the aggregate energy consumption of networking devices would follow the growth trajectories of Internet traffic (i.e., about 60% per year), the environmental and financial consequences will be dire. Thus, making ICT equipment and applications "greener" can not only have a tangible positive impact on environment, but also help operators attain long-term profitability. Moreover, green communications can help the world reduce dependence on fossil fuel, enable demand response and distributed energy resources, and ultimately achieve sustainable prosperity. Accordingly, a myriad of communications and information technologies have already been exploited by the global smart grid initiatives to empower conventional power grid to support two-way energy and information flow. To meet the green communications challenges, we have to resort to a plethora of paradigm-shifting technologies, including but not limiting to energy-efficient network architecture & protocols, energy-efficient wireless transmission techniques, energy-efficient home networking, energy-aware backbone networks, Smart Grid, and opportunistic spectrum sharing without causing harmful interference pollution (e.g., Green Spectrum). This IEEE Communications Magazine special issue (feature topic issue) aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art in technology, regulation and standardization for "Green Communications", and present a holistic view of research challenges and opportunities in the coming green era. For many applications, the sensor networks cannot operate in complete isolation. There must be a way enabling a monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data produced by the sensor network, and even to interact with a particular sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read the sensed value instantaneously, fix some inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into the mote, etc. By connecting the sensor network to an existing network infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet, mobile smart networks, and notably the global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be straightforward. However, many questions need answers, and many challenges must be tackled before such interconnection become effective. Suitability of IP standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture. Is it more effective to use fixed gateways? Or is it better to employ a dynamic ad hoc mode where all nodes (or several nodes) cooperatively and alternatively act as gateways. By openly connect a sensor network to other networks new vulnerabilities will take place. An intruder would not need to gain physical access to the network anymore, but it might remotely launch attacks. Security is thus a very important aspect that must be considered. Routing, QoS, and interoperability are also important and challenging issues in the new heterogeneous systems. This workshop is a forum for researchers, academics, and industrials to debate the different issues related to the interconnection of wireless sensor networks, and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions. Due to the dynamic and ubiquitous nature of this content (and associated descriptors), new interesting challenges for indexing, access, and search and retrieval have arisen. In addition, there is a growing concern on privacy protection, as a lot of personal data is being exchanged. Teenagers (and even younger kids), for example, require special protection applications; while adults are willing to have a higher control over the access to content. Furthermore, the integration of mobile technologies with the Web 2.0 applications is also an interesting area of research that needs to be addressed; not only in terms of content protection, but also considering the implementation of new and enriched context-aware applications. Finally, social multimedia is also expected to improve the performance of traditional multimedia information search and retrieval approaches by contributing to bridge the semantic gap. The integration of these aspects, however, is not trivial and has created a new interdisciplinary area of research. In any case, there is a common issue that needs to be addressed in all the previously identified social multimedia applications: the interoperability and extensibility of their applications. Brave New Ideas papers will be reviewed in two stages: abstracts (500 words) will be first filtered by the Brave New Ideas Program Chairs, then selected papers (4 to 10 pages) will undergo a full review plus discussion with the Chairs. Thanks, - Jitu Padhye, Paul Barford and Sambit Sahu First ACM SIGCOMM Workshop on Green Networking Understanding and reducing the energy consumption of computing and communication infrastructure in home, enterprise and data center environments is an area of increasing importance for both researchers and commercial entities. This is an interdisciplinary field by its very nature: advances in many areas such as computer architecture, operating systems and compilers are all needed to reduce the energy consumption. Many of the proposed ideas have a direct impact on how networks are designed and provisioned. The power consumption of network infrastructure has itself come under scrutiny. At the same time, we have begun to see networking technologies play a significant role in reducing energy consumption in other domains such as utility networks and transportation systems. The First Green Networking workshop at SIGCOMM will focus on networking issues involved in designing green infrastructures in both computing and non-computing domains. We welcome papers that utilize networking technologies and principles to other domains besides traditional networking areas such as transit, energy that influence our daily life. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Power measurements and data from empirical studies of computer and communication infrastructure * Techniques for measuring or estimating power consumption of computer and communication infrastructure * Techniques for reducing power consumption in data center, enterprise and home environments * Power consumption of networking infrastructure * Protocol and middleware considerations for reducing power consumption * Hardware and architectural support for reducing power consumption * Green network design for high density data centers and cloud computing * Methods that focus on computing and communication systems as key components for reducing the power footprint in other environments such as smart grids and smart transportation systems * Application of networking technologies and principles for greening services and utilities affecting our daily life Submissions All submissions must be original work not under review at any other workshop, conference, or journal. The workshop will accept papers describing completed work as well as work-in-progress, so long as the promise of the approach is demonstrated. Radical ideas, potentially of a controversial nature, are strongly encouraged. Submissions must be no greater than 6 pages in length and must be a pdf file. The marriage of current wired-network-based social networks with mobile wireless networks triggers exciting new research areas. For instance, knowing the network features such as throughput and delay can help mobile social networks select a contact (e.g., a job advice centre) to which the network route has the best performance. This leads to the so-called wireless-aware social networks and the problem domain is within social networks. On the other hand, there is also social-aware or social inspired wireless network research where the knowledge of social network users is exploited for the benefit of wireless network design. Therefore, a cross-layer design that incorporates both the upper-layer mobile social networks and the lower-layer wireless networks is needed. And this comprises the thematic essence of this Special Issue. This cross-layer design method calls for a novel interdisciplinary research thinking that embraces not only these disciplines that are closely related to the field such as computer science, social science and network/communication engineering but also other subjects such as biology, physics, etc. The goal of this SI is to solicit the state-of-the-art approaches and technical solutions that embark on the above interdisciplinary and cross-layer design methodologies to design and implement a better-performed mobile social network or wireless network. Recently it has become increasingly popular to utilize sensor networks for providing various services, e.g., audio/video surveillance, real-time monitoring, etc. Such WSN functionality demands the Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees in terms of delay, jitter, loss, or throughput using intelligent resource reservation schemes, policy-based service provision, etc. Enabling QoS guarantees in large-scale WSNs, while utilizing the network resources in the most efficient way, is critical for the success and life-time of the service-oriented WSNs. Providing QoS in WSNs involves addressing various technological issues, e.g., inherent limitations of sensors, varying network loads, network congestion, multi-path routing, changing channel capacity as a function of environment, time, and interference from neighbors, mobility and cross-layer design, etc. In addition, the trade-off between predictable network behavior and network lifetime, as well as between policy-based route selection and load distribution need further investigation. Privacy of sensor information is also a concern since multiple sensors share/access a common media. QoS2N workshop aims at providing a platform for discussing the above issues, recent challenges and solutions, and directions for future research on enabling QoS in WSNs. Researchers, professionals and application developers from industry and academia are welcome to exchange ideas, discuss results, and share experience in a broad range of topics related to QoS and sensor networking. Both theoretical and practical experience papers are solicited. Work-in-progress and position papers are welcome. The relevance of this paradigm ranges from IPTV or video-on-demand systems for distributing and sharing professional TV to user-generated content over the web. To obtain a pleasurable user experience far more aspects than QoS have to be taken into account. Major challenges in this context include the identification of relevant UX factors and the quantification of their influence on Quality of Experience (QoE). In particular, context awareness and assessment of users expectations play an essential role. This is further justified by the emergence of new multimedia enhancement techniques, notably 3DTV and Free Viewpoint. Future Internet architectures under current research are also promising on the possibility to accommodate protocols and policies that take QoE issues into consideration. Consequently, acquired knowledge on the context and on identified parameters affecting users experience could be used to improve media delivery. * Workshop objectives The objective of this workshop consists in collecting and developing knowledge on the following three main topics defining the session structure of the workshop: - Context awareness for multimedia applications (video on demand on the web, content sharing, user-generated & professional content, IPTV, social aspects, sensors, energy efficiency) - Content and context aware quality measurements (user-generated & professional content, live & on demand) - Content and context aware interplay between media service/applications and network strategies. However, even more work on this area is needed to obtain significant results in improving the Quality of Life of patients and reducing medical errors and costs. First of all, a strict interaction and cooperation among medical specialists and ICT experts is necessary to define correct requirements fore-health systems. Then, in order to effectively design and deploy reliable E-health systems, a strong cooperation among several diverse research areas of ICT is necessary (i.e., bioengineering, wearable sensors, wireless communications, data fusion and processing, decision support systems and others). This is fundamental to make E-health systems a reality, satisfying main requirements of reliability and effectiveness both all the involved perspectives perspective. IREHSS aims to provide a forum for the interaction of experts belonging to these different research areas, from wearable computing and ubiquitous connectivity to context-awareness, sensor data fusion, artificial intelligence, expert systems, databases, security and privacy. The main objective is to provide a forum for the interaction of these multiple areas as an important chance to discuss and understand what aspects have to be considered to provide effective E-health systems. Authors are invited to submit papers presenting new research related to E-health, not published or currently under review for another workshop, conference, or journal. The proliferation and deployment of radio access networks such as Wireless WANs, Wireless LANs, Wireless PANs, ad hoc networks, and wireless sensor networks with distinguishing characteristics of data rate, coverage range, power, mobility, and prices will clearly lead to a need for seamless and ubiquitous access across these various networks. Such an integrated heterogeneous environment enables a user to access a particular network depending upon the application needs and the types of radio access networks (RANs) available. The heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks, on the other hand, provide unlimited mobility and greater flexibility but introduce a number of challenges due to dynamic network topology. The design of efficient and scalable protocols for existing multi-hop wireless and mobile networks such as wireless and mobile ad hoc networks continue to pose challenges at all the layers of networking stack. Therefore, it is necessary to aim at heterogeneous architectures and services that together provide seamless integration of single-hop as well as multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks. The aim of this workshop is to bring together the research community in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the latest research and future research directions in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks. We are seeking original and previously unpublished research papers addressing theoretical and application issues in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless mobile networks. All the papers will be peer-reviewed following the MMSJ reviewing procedures. ------------------------- *Summary* ------------------------- Recent years have witnessed the flourish of multimedia data on the Internet. To facilitate humans in accessing and managing the explosively growing multimedia content, extensive research efforts have been dedicated to automatic multimedia analysis and processing in the last decades, such as categorization, annotation and indexing. However, despite great advances in recent years, several key difficulties still exist, the most important of which is the semantic gap in multimedia modeling. It is evident from recent results that most of the semantic gap problems cannot be solved automatically within the near future and without additional information or resources. On the other hand, we have witnessed the power of collective human efforts in the Web 2.0 era in providing high-quality tags and comments to large amounts of images and videos in sites such as Flickr and YouTube. In fact, a lot more can be accomplished through simple online games such as the ESP. Hence, more and more researchers believe that a possible approach to addressing the semantic gap problem is to incorporate the efforts of humans into the computational process, i.e., by combining human intelligence and automated computer processing to jointly tackle the problems in a collaborative manner. The past decade has witnessed the increase of such efforts, such as relevance feedback in content-based image retrieval, active learning in multimedia modeling, the interactive video search evaluation task in TRECVID, new search and browsing interfaces in VideoOlympics to facilitate humans’ interaction, and the recent human computation efforts such as the ESP game on Google image search website. This special issue aims to bring together the range of research efforts in interactive multimedia computing. The goals of this special issue are threefold: (1) to introduce novel research work and systems in this area; (2) to survey the progress of this direction in the past years; and (3) to discuss new technologies that will be potentially impactful (primary results are needed). The attribution of cognition in the wireless world is one of the most exciting areas in modern telecommunications. As an emerging technology in wireless access, cognitive radio is aimed at vastly improving the way radio spectrum is utilized. The motivation for cognitive radio stems from various measurements of spectrum utilization, which generally show that spectrum is under-utilized. This means that there are many "holes" in the radio spectrum that could be exploited by the secondary users. The secondary user must exploit these spectrum opportunities without causing harmful degradation to the primary system . The research challenges in this area include devising methods for efficient spectrum pooling and sensing, for capacity-approaching transmission scheme, for interference management and dynamic resource allocation, and for cross-layer design of protocols, as well as circuits and architectures meeting the often challenging requirements. The objective of this workshop is to bring together original, high-quality contributions that present new techniques, concepts and analyses in the area of cognitive radio algorithms and system design. Such a network consists of many small sensor nodes with sensing, computing, communicating, and control capabilities. The wireless sensor networks have a broad spectrum applications ranging from wild life monitoring, battlefield surveillance, to border control and disaster relief, and have attracted significant interests from both academy and industry. A wireless sensor node generally has limited communication and computation capabilities, as well as severely-constrained power supplies, and the networks often operate in harsh unattended environments. Successful design and deployment of wireless sensor networks thus call for technology advances and integrations in diverse fields, including embedded hardware design, data processing, and wireless communications and networking across all layers. One of the key challenges in WSNs is to develop sustainable and scalable system that achieves longer network lifetime. Nodes capable of harvesting environmental energy have been designed and used in many WSN systems. The benefits of using rechargeable batteries by harvesting environmental energy to prolong sensor network lifetime have been well recognized. This special issue aims to summarize the latest development of hardware and software for WSNs, as well as deployment experiences. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: ? The basic solution to meet such requirements is to allow mobile computer users with (compatible) wireless communication devices to set up a (possibly) short-lived network just for the communication needs of the moment- in other words, an ad-hoc network. A mobile ad hoc network (Manet) is a system of wireless mobile nodes dynamically self organizing in arbitrary and temporary network topologies. People and vehicles can thus be internetworked in areas without a pre-existing communication infrastructure, or when the use of such infrastructure requires wireless extension. Therefore, such networks are designed to operate in widely varying environments, from military networks (with hundreds of nodes) to low-power sensor networks and other embedded systems. Dynamic topologies, bandwidth constraints, energy-constrained operations, wireless vulnerabilities, and limited physical security are among the characteristics that differentiate mobile ad hoc networks from fixed multi-hop networks. The field of ad hoc, sensor and mesh networking is reemerging amid unprecedented growth in the scale and diversity of computer networking. Wireless mesh networks (WMNs) are considered as a key technology for next-generation wireless networking. Wireless mesh networks often consist of mesh clients, mesh routers and gateways, where mesh routers have minimal mobility and form the backbone of WMNs. Mesh clients can be either stationary or mobile, and can form a client mesh network among themselves and with mesh routers. The gateway and mesh routers are utilized to provide the internetworking of WMNs with other networks such as the Internet, IEEE 802.11, IEEE 802.15, IEEE 802.16, cellular networks, wireless sensor networks, or combinations of several types of networks. Because of the many advantages, WMNs are undergoing rapid development and inspiring numerous deployments. A wireless sensor network (WSN) is a wireless network consisting of large populations of spatially distributed sensor nodes to cooperatively monitor physical or environmental conditions, such as temperature, sound, vibration, pressure, motion or pollutants, at different locations. A sensor node is an autonomous device which is capable of computation, communication, and sensing. Wireless sensor networks have many useful applications such as hostile environment surveillance, industrial process monitoring, environment and habitat monitoring, healthcare applications, home automation, and traffic control. Networked systems of such sensors are expected to be used in a variety of applications including habitat monitoring, precision agriculture, disaster recovery operations, healthcare and supply chain management. Real-world sensor network deployments and prototypic implementations are still not commonplace. However, experiences gained in such deployments are crucial for the sensor network research community. These results are needed to refine assumptions made when designing hardware, software, protocols and mechanisms for sensor networks. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. The need for efficient merging of the wired and wireless infrastructure as well as the new multimedia services and applications of next generation networks call for novel network architectures, protocols and traffic-related mechanisms. WWIC addresses research topics such as the design and evaluation of protocols, the dynamics of the integration, the performance tradeoffs, the need for new performance metrics, and cross-layer interactions. The goal of the conference is to present high-quality results in the field, and to provide a framework for research collaboration through focused discussions that will designate future research efforts and directions. In this context, the program committee will accept only a limited number of papers that meet the criteria of originality, presentation quality and topic relevance. WWIC is a single-track conference which has reached, within 5 years, the highest level of quality, which is reflected both in the level of participation as well as the acceptance ratio and the amount and quality of submitted papers. To this end, developing tools and technologies that can build, access, manage, deploy, and maintain applications in clouds in a developer-friendly manner has become critical. Clouds aim to power the next generation data centers by architecting them as a network of virtual services (hardware, database, user-interface, application logic) so that users are able to deploy and access applications globally and on demand at competitive costs depending on users QoS (Quality of Service) requirements. Cloud infrastructures are exposed through collections of software services at SaaS and PaaS layers designed to support creation and deployment of application services. Currently, public IaaS vendors including Amazon (web services), Microsoft (.Net), Google (python), and GoGrid offer different level of software programming abstractions and interfaces. Next, these are implemented using different programming languages, hence should be accessed through Vendor-dependent adapter interfaces. Traditional distributed (RPC, RMI, CORBA) and enterprise programming technologies (J2EE, .Net, SOA), and tools are insufficient to handle the complexity posed by Cloud computing platforms. There are significant programming challenges to be solved, if an enterprise or scientific application has to be ported to clouds. The application services arriving at a public cloud also have radically different application characteristics and workload profiles, ranging from the traditional e-Commerce application types, to the newer social networking and collaboration applications, to the enterprise business applications such as CRM and ERP, and to the scientific computing and data intensive type of applications. Further, there is possibility to create Cloud mashup applications that can combine data and functionality from multiple external services that are offered by different SaaS and PaaS vendors. Hence, there is a need to develop tools, programming APIs, and plug-ins, IDEs that can hide the complexity of Cloud platforms from the application service developers. For this reason, M&S is gaining a primary role in many industrial and research fields, such as space, critical infrastructures, manufacturing, emergency management, biomedical systems and sustainable future. However, as the complexity of the investigated systems increases and the types of investigations widens, the cost of M&S activities increases because of the more complex models and of the communications among a wider number and variety of M&S stakeholders (e.g., sub-domain experts, simulator users, simulator engineers, and final system users). To address the increasing costs of M&S activities, collaborative technologies must be introduced to support these activities by fostering the sharing and reuse of models, by facilitating the communications among M&S stakeholders, and more generally by integrating processes, tools and platforms. Aside from seeking applications of collaborative technologies to M&S activities, the workshop seeks innovative contributions that deal with the application of M&S practices to the design of collaborative environments. These environments are continuously becoming more complex and therefore their design requires systematic approaches to meet the required quality of collaboration. This is important for two reasons: to reduce rework activities on the actual collaborative environment, and to maximize the productivity and the quality of the process the collaborative environment supports. M&S offers the methodologies and tools for such investigations and therefore it can be used to improve the quality of collaborative environments. Papers should be submitted through the paper submission system at the symposium website. Each paper is limited to 6 pages (or 8 pages with over length charge). Mobile phones are one of the most pervasive technologies on earth: almost every person has access to a mobile device. Yet, little attention has been given to the design of the interface of these devices, or to its services, to include more equitably people with different abilities or cultures. A big challenge of mobile UI design is the physical input limitation. In most cases users only have a simple 5-way controller, a few selection keys, and a keypad to enter both text and numbers. Recently, top of the line devices also include touch screens that are able to recognize multi-finger interaction. Nevertheless, this seems to be still limiting when compared to the myriad of possibilities offered by other technologies. In particular, sensing technologies could be easily incorporated into mobile devices that could broaden the range of interaction capabilities. Related to the lack of input is the limitation of the output capabilities of these devices. Screens are small, thus showing information and creating visual cues is a challenging task for designers. The iPod comes to mind as a good example of design solution to the input/output challenge. Apple designers started from the users’ goals and the context in which the device had to be used. Accessibility for mobile devices is not just a hardware challenge. The design of software components has to adapt to people with different abilities and needs. For instance, the design of an interface for people with visual impairment has to adapt its visual components so to maximize readability while maintaining internal and external consistency. Finally, accessibility for such universal technology should take into account people belonging to different cultures. The most obvious example is related to languages that are written from right to left – something that interfaces developed for western cultures do not take into account. However, supporting multiple cultures is not just a matter of rendering text. The metaphors that are associated with elements of the interface are often fundamentally driven by the particular culture of the designer of that interface. The challenge for MobileHCI2010 consists in designing innovative software and/or hardware solutions for mobile devices that could allow people with different abilities or cultures to be supported in achieving their goals and satisfying their needs. We are seeking examples and case studies of solutions that are designed with the focus on users’ needs and context of use. The Design Competition The competition comprises of two parts: The selection of contestants prior to the conference – the review process The judging of the contributions at the conference – the award process The Award Gold, Silver, and Bronze award winners will be selected from the entries. Such work has established good foundation for WSN research and development. The research and development of WSNs are stimulated by novel exciting applications. For example, WSNs, particularly the wireless body sensor network, make the old people/patient healthcare monitoring possible in smart home environment, where advanced signal processing algorithms are required to extract medical parameters like heart beat rate from raw sensor measurements such as ECG signal, estimation algorithms are required for occupant location and motion tracking, and machine learning algorithms are required for occupant activity recognition. The indoor environment (e.g., temperature and humidity) can be monitored by ambient wireless sensor network, and help design highly efficient distributed air-conditioning control system to improve the energy efficiency and enhance occupant comfort. Such WSN applications must address a number of key technological challenges induced by limited network resources such as node energy and network bandwidth. As a result, the application algorithms should be resource constrained and the network protocols should be application-driven. Advanced closed-loop system can be expected as an integrated system solution to link the application algorithms and the lower layer networking protocols by means of control theoretic or optimization approaches. To be scalable and reliable, such algorithms and protocols should also be distributed in nature via node local processing and collaboration with limited information exchange to achieve complex overall network goal. This special issue is a follow-up of the previous special issue on Networked Sensing, Decision Making and Control in Journal of Control Theory and Applications organized by Lihua Xie and Frank L. Lewis, which received warm responses. Different from that special issue, which mainly addresses the theoretic approaches for WSNs and networked control systems challenged by network uncertainties and limited resources, this special issue will be more focused on novel real WSN applications and application-driven research and development. Papers with real practices on platform development, network deployment, and system operational lessons or experience are particularly welcome.
