ICNP 2010, the 18th ICNP, will be held in Kyoto, Japan, on October 5-8, 2010. Papers with significant research contributions to the field of network protocols are solicited for submission. Papers cannot be previously published nor under review by another conference or journal. Papers containing plagiarized material will be subject to the IEEE plagiarism policy and will be rejected without review. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: 1. Protocol design, implementation, testing, and analysis 2. Measurement of protocol performance 3. Protocols for specific functions, such as routing, congestion control, security, survivability, and network management 4. Protocols for wireless, mobile, sensor, and mesh networks 5. Protocols for cloud computing, peer-to-peer systems, data centers, and emerging distributed systems Papers must deal specifically with protocols. Papers on general networking where protocols are only a secondary focus will be considered only if they are of exceptional quality. ICNP will select an accepted full paper for the best paper award. ICNP 2010 will use a double-blind review process. The identity of authors and referees will not be revealed to each other. To ensure blind reviewing, author names and affiliations should not appear in the paper; bibliographic references should be made in such a way as to preserve author anonymity. Papers should adhere to the IEEE format and should not exceed 10 pages. The font size should be no smaller than 10 pt. At lease one author of an accepted paper is expected to register for the conference and to present the paper at the conference, in order for the paper to appear in the conference proceedings and the IEEE digital library. The management of content distribution services is an important key to attract and keep customers, while increasing profits to content providers. At the same time the complexity and dynamics of content networks require special solutions in order to provide efficient delivery and deployment of real-time multimedia services. Further, emerging diverse and heterogeneous wired and wireless systems is a challenging research objective. The interoperability of applications, transport and network protocols, as well as, the demand for improved Quality of Service (QoS) and Quality of Experience (QoE), and seamless mobility control creates a challenging study field and also possibilities for research of novel communication protocols, architectures and methods towards Future Multimedia Networking Systems. Thus, one major challenge is the ever growing complexity of communication management and network maintenance. Solutions are required in which services, management and administration entities interact and behave autonomously, with the overall goal of creating content centric networks. The objective of the Future Multimedia Networking - FMN 2010 workshop is to discuss state-of-the-art research and developing activities contributing to aspects of multimedia systems, content networking, and autonomous communication. We are inviting both theoretical and experimental papers as well as work-in-progress research. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Content centric networks - Autonomic content networks - Audio-visual systems - Novel protocols for multimedia services - Grid networking for multimedia services - Multimedia in personal, sensor and ad-hoc networks - Multimedia in peer-to-peer networks and autonomic network infrastructures - Multimedia in mobile and broadband wireless access networks - Quality of service management in content centric networks - Quality of experience management in content centric networks - Seamless mobility of multimedia services in emerging content networks - Multicast and broadcast multimedia service management - Resource reservation for multimedia services - Context-aware content distribution - Energy-efficiency in content centric networks - Multimedia Security PARALLEL POSTER/DEMONSTRATION SESSION A parallel poster/demonstration session entitled “Demonstrations on Future Multimedia” will be organized along with the main workshop. This event encourages researchers to present and discuss “work-in-progress” or “experience-in-practice” of their current implementations and research prototypes that cover the topics of FMN 2010. Authors are invited to submit a short paper of up to 6 pages following the format of workshop. All accepted short papers will be included in the proceedings of FMN 2010. Information Infrastructures have become a key building block of virtually all Critical Infrastructures (CIs) which are being built today, as well as of a plethora of critical applications. As such, the design and operation of Critical Information Infrastructures (CIIs) is increasingly being characterized by challenging security and dependability requirements. This trend is unlikely to change in the future, due to a number of factors, including: i) Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have become commonplace in a number of application domains, ii) Commercial-Of -The-Shelf (COTS) components are being massively used for implementing Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, iii) subsystems are being connected using the infrastructure of the corporate Local Area Network (LAN), or even Wide Area Network (WAN) links, including the public Internet, and satellite trunks. The Member States have varying approaches to CIIP, but the success of CIIP programmes depends heavily on the cooperation and level of involvement that different stakeholders can achieve. This special session aims at sharing ideas towards the creation of a common approach for the establishment of requirements and needs to improve the protection of Critical Information Infrastructures. We are interested in projects addressing CIIP issues. The seventeen-year-long success of IWQoS has established it as a highly reputable forum to present novel ideas on all research subjects related to QoS. While QoS research for future generations of wired and wireless networks continues to captivate much interest, recent exploration of data centers, virtualization, cloud computing, industrial communication, and “green” computing has motivated a new wave of research interest in QoS and its related metrics such as Quality of Experience (QoE) and Quality of Protection (QoP). The scope of IWQoS 2010 covers both theoretical and experimental research on QoS related issues such as survivability, availability, reliability, security, privacy, pricing, resource provisioning and management, user experience, and system performance guarantees. Topics of interest include QoS issues in (but not limited to) the following areas: * Data centers, virtualization and cloud computing * Energy saving in networks and end systems; IT technologies to reduce energy consumption in applications * Protection, experience, security and privacy * System dependability, availability; resilience and robustness to faults and DoS attacks * Scheduling, resource management, queue management, admission control; traffic engineering approaches and tools for provisioning and evaluation * Quality evaluation metrics and methodologies; application-aware QoS parsing, identification and control * Measurement, evaluation, adaptation and verification * Network operations, pricing and billing, network and service management * Architectures and protocols for IP and WDM networks, overlay and peer-to-peer networks; wireless ad hoc, mesh, and sensor networks * Design for the future Internet Paper Submission Guidelines: IWQoS invites submission of manuscripts with original research results that have not been previously published or that are not currently under review by another conference or journal. Submissions will be judged based on originality, significance, interest, clarity, relevance, and correctness. Paper submissions should be no longer than 9 single-spaced, double-column pages with font-size of 10. Papers must be submitted electronically as PDF files through the EDAS system (http://edas.info/N8541). All submitted papers will be subject to peer reviews by Technical Program Committee members and other experts in the field. IWQoS aims at rapid dissemination of research results. The effective design, implementation, and run-time support of smart applications in wide-scale pervasive environments are considered still very open challenges nowadays. Currently, the high costs still associated with the development of these smart applications are limiting their widespread adoption and their potential impact on the mass market of final users. Costs relevantly derive from the complexity of integrating already deployed heterogeneous systems, from differentiated sensors providing data in different formats via heterogeneous wireless technologies, and from nodes with differentiated capabilities/resources to highly heterogeneous legacy services. The First International Workshop on Semantic Interoperability for Smart Spaces (SISS 2010) aims at soliciting and promoting the discussion among academic/industrial researchers, practitioners in the field, and most relevant industry players about the above issue of cost reduction via interoperability, with the primary guideline of addressing interoperability of heterogeneous devices and systems via the adoption of proper semantic solutions for open smart spaces. The focus will be on novel and open innovation platforms for the effective sharing of interoperable information in smart environments: smart applications should have the possibility to effectively and easily access to highly interoperable and shared information spaces that maintain data/metadata of common interest (sensed monitored data, information about currently available resources/services, ). Contributions to SISS 2010 should address the technical challenges arising from emerging smart spaces, capable of openly including new devices, systems, applications, and final users, and to properly scale up to the challenging size of urban-wide scenarios. Visionary and early-stage work that is rigorously presented and can steer discussion to new topics is particularly welcome, as well as more solid and extensively evaluated work that reports practical and industrial experience in the field. The SISS 2010 workshop is organized by academic experts and industrial players also collaborating in a joint research project called Smart Objects for Intelligent Applications (SOFIA - http://www.sofia-project.eu), funded through the European Artemis programme. To better understand the nature of these changes, it is important to evaluate these technologies in real-world environments via empirical measurement. While analytical and simulation-based approaches are useful, they are often limited by the simplistic modeling of the wireless protocols and the varying and error-prone wireless channel. As a response to these limitations, the need for experimental wireless network measurements has gained wide recognition in the networking research community. This workshop continues the successful WiNMee series, begun at WiOpt in 2005, and is intended to bring together researchers in the field of experimental wireless networking and serve as a forum for discussing advances and challenges in experimental wireless network measurements. We solicit 6-page papers that advance the understanding of wireless networks through testbed measurements or field experiments. Special Issue of IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine In the last few years, a stimulating idea is fast emerging in the wireless scenario: the pervasive presence around us of a variety of "things" or "objects", such as devices, sensors, actuators, mobile phones, which, through unique addressing schemes, are able to interact with each other and cooperate with their neighboring "smart" components to reach common goals. This novel paradigm, named "The Internet of Things", continues on the path set by the concept of smart environment and paves the way to the deployment of numerous applications with a significant impact on many fields of future every-day life. In this context, logistics, Intelligent Transportation Systems, Business/Process management, assisted living, e-health are only a few examples of possible application fields in which this novel paradigm will play a leading role. How to implement this novel paradigm and how effective its introduction into citizens' every-day life is, still remains to be investigated. Key objectives of any R&D activity in the field are: efficient and effective wireless spectrum utilization, full interoperability of "smarts" devices, their adaptation and autonomous behavior, as well as trust, privacy, and security guarantees. From a wireless communications and networking perspective, the Internet of Things idea raises several challenging issues to address and technological nodes to untie. Which major technological innovations and developments are still required to enable a level of "ambient intelligence", characterized by the integration of wired and wireless "smart" components? Which sustainable standards, technologies, global communication protocols, and algorithms at the various layers of the system protocol stack (from the physical to the application layer) shall be introduced with the aim of allowing a vast amount of information to be shared amongst things and people when wireless links and technologies are involved? Which is the role of widely accepted wireless communications paradigms for peer to peer communications, machine-to-machine communications, and machine-to-network communications in a IoT perspective? Could the use of middleware mechanisms represent a feasible and effective solution to the problem of integrating Radio Frequency devices and wireless sensors into a common IoT framework? Are the proposed trust, privacy, and security models able to make people trust in these novel technologies instead of being afraid of an external surveillance and, more relevantly, are they still effective when involved "things" communicate wirelessly? An attempt to provide a partial answer to these and many other related questions will form the main scope of the present special issue. However, even more work on this area is needed to obtain significant results in improving the Quality of Life of patients and reducing medical errors and costs. First of all, a strict interaction and cooperation among medical specialists and ICT experts is necessary to define correct requirements fore-health systems. Then, in order to effectively design and deploy reliable E-health systems, a strong cooperation among several diverse research areas of ICT is necessary (i.e., bioengineering, wearable sensors, wireless communications, data fusion and processing, decision support systems and others). This is fundamental to make E-health systems a reality, satisfying main requirements of reliability and effectiveness both all the involved perspectives perspective. One approach which will be investigated is that it is possible to create ingenious applications using simple technology, and that these applications can have a great impact because the technology is relatively simple. Most of the WSN literature displays great applications based on cutting-edge technology, but these applications are often prohibitively expensive due to their nature. The status quo of a networked sensing system has been based on high-cost nodes (>100 USD) and time and effort-intensive development, all of which leads to highly functional yet highly complex and expensive WSN applications. A new approach to the field is the concept of ultra-low-cost wireless sensor networks (ULC WSN) which would allow for applications of miniature ultra-low-cost wireless sensor nodes (<20 USD) as well as low-cost rapid development. These qualities come naturally at a price, which is low resources available on the nodes. As any developer knows, the most expensive part of any WSN application is the time-intensive development. Here again the ULC WSN approach foresees low-cost light-weight rapid development (<2 hours), but at the cost of application complexity (comparable to a restricted instruction set). Although low-cost sensor nodes and rapid development environments exist, application scenarios for a combination of both of them have not yet been explored. This workshop will try to explore what can be done with WSN technology designed with cost as the primary design factor. Recent developments have created the basis for unprecedentedly affordable WSN development tools which open new application spaces previously inaccessible due to the prohibitive cost of development and technology. These scenarios will be explored by encouraging participants to come up with applications based on and enabled by ultra-low-cost wireless sensor network technology. Participants will be asked to submit ideas for applications which can be implemented quickly (15 minutes or less with a configurable WSN platform) on a miniature simplistic ultra-low-cost wireless sensor network. Workshop Format: The workshop will be divided into three distinct portions. In the morning, the contributions to the workshop will be presented to the group by the authors. This will be followed by a brief evaluation of the contributions by the group and discussion based on the impact and potential of the different ideas presented, as well as resources and development effort required. After lunch, the Akiba platform will be introduced to the participants as a basis for evaluating ultra-low-cost WSN applications and a short tutorial will be given, followed by a period of hands-on wireless sensor network rapid development examples and tools. The participants will then be broken into groups, each with the task of implementing one of the ideas presented in the participant contributions. Each implementation will be evaluated by all groups to ascertain if the goal of the application could be accomplished by the developers with the restricted resources and time frame. Finally, the groups will be brought back together to share their experiences and for a discussion on the plausibility of an ultra-low-cost wireless sensor network to close the workshop. In order reach this point, the scenario properties must be identified which allow or prevent the use of an ULC WSN. The desired result will indicate under which conditions an ULC WSN is appropriate, in which scenarios an ULC WSN will be able to achieve satisfactory results, and which scenario parameters are prohibitive of a low-cost, low-resource, low-complexity wireless sensor networks. Call for Papers, Selection Process and Publication: Submissions are requested on the topic of ultra-low-cost wireless sensor networks and their applications. Submissions should address the questions of available platforms, potential for improvement in this field, potential application areas, developers, users, innovations which affect ULC WSN technology or any other ULC WSN related theme. Each submission should contain an idea, recommendation or example of an application of an ULC WSN. The papers should provide a method for implementing the example in 15 minutes or less with an out-of-box ULC WSN configurable platform and indicate a method for evaluating the application. Implementational examples and ideas should be original, though that is not a requirement for submission. The number of participants is limited to 15 based on the submissions. Papers should be submitted in IEEE Transaction format with a maximum of four pages. Accepted papers will be published by the Technische Universitaet Braunschweig as a technical report and on the Internet, as well as on the workshop website. Depending on the outcome of the workshop we will ask for a special submission to a journal (Personal and Mobile Computing) on the topic. Participants will then be invited to submit an extended version of their workshop contribution which includes the experience gathered in the workshop as a journal submission. The outcome of the workshop can also be presented at the INSS conference in the main track as a short presentation. Topics of interest are the same as research topics in the SIGCOMM conference call for papers. Although anyone can submit a poster, preference will be given to posters where the primary contribution is from one or more students. Posters will be reviewed by members of the SIGCOMM Poster Session Committee. At the conference, student posters must be presented by a student. Authors of accepted papers in SIGCOMM 2009 may not submit a poster on the same work in those papers. Student Research Competition For the first time, the SIGCOMM poster session will also serve as an ACM student research competition. Qualified entrants must have current ACM student membership, have graduate or undergraduate student status at the time of submission (May 2010, below), and be submitted by a single student author. Supervisors are not permitted to coauthor the poster. Undergraduates and graduate students will be treated in separate divisions. (Students starting their first year of graduate school at the time of the conference will be considered as undergraduates.) A small travel supplement is made available to accepted entrants: please also submit applications for travel grant support. The ACM SRC program is sponsored by Microsoft Research. Winners will advance to ACM Grand Finals of the Student Research Competition to compete against the winners of other ACM conferences. Why Should You Submit a Poster? This is a great chance especially for students to obtain interesting and valuable feedback on ongoing research from a knowledgeable crowd at the conference. In addition, some submissions will be forwarded for publication to ACM SIGCOMM's newletter, the ACM Computer Communication Review (CCR). Travel Grants for Student Posters Students who are submitting posters are highly encouraged to examine if they are eligible for student travel grants. What is a Poster? We define a poster to be A0 paper size in portrait mode (841x1189mm), to which you can affix visually appealing material that describes your research. Alternatively, you can use the space as a continuum. You should prepare the best material (visually appealing and succinct) that effectively communicates your research problem, techniques, results, and what is novel and important about your work. Note that you do not submit such a large-format image; only an abstract describing in text what the poster would present. What and Where to Submit Please submit a two-page abstract describing the work http://sigcomm10-posters.cs.umd.edu/. The decision will be taken primarily by reading the abstract. Submissions are single blind, so please include authors' names and affiliation. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), in their various shapes and forms, have greatly facilitated and enhanced the automated, remote, and intelligent monitoring of a large variety of physical systems. These networks consist of a large number of typically small devices, each incorporating sensing, processing, and wireless communications capabilities. Their use has penetrated a plethora of application domains from industrial and building automation, to environmental, wildlife, and health monitoring. The control and systems community has played an important role in the maturing of WSNs addressing issues related to their fundamental limits and designing strategies to optimize and control their operation so as to improve performance. Performance encompasses a variety of metrics that may vary with the application but in all cases includes the network's energy use which determines its usable lifetime. As WSN nodes are powered by small batteries, energy conservation has become a very important concern. Equally importantly, the existence of WSNs has provided a major application context to theoretical contributions of the control community including cooperative and distributed control, event-based monitoring, discrete- event systems, and consensus algorithms. What is emerging as the next step in the WSN evolution is their use not only in monitoring but also in controlling a physical system. To that end, some of the WSN nodes have to be augmented by integrating actuators. Actuators can be simple devices programmed to take immediate, one-shot, action in response to sensory input, or they can be more sophisticated entities (like robots) that interact with their environment in more complex ways. The resulting augmented version of WSNs is commonly referred to as Wireless Sensor and Actuator Networks (WSANs). WSANs are therefore heterogeneous networks that comprise of networked sensor and actuator nodes that communicate among each other using wireless links to perform distributed sensing and actuation tasks. WSANs can be used to close loops over the network in a variety of applications, such as, environmental control, event detection and suppression, home automation, manufacturing, microclimate control, surveillance etc. The control community has recently made important contributions in understanding control over communication channels but this work has, for the most part, abstracted the communication medium. A new challenge is to consider a WSAN as the communications channel over which we seek to close control loops. The topics relevant to this special issue include but are not limited to: < Autonomous sensor networks < Co-design of communication protocols and control strategies < Architectural, modeling and simulation of WSANs < Autonomic and self-organizing coordination and communication < Sensor-actuator and actuator-actuator coordination < Distributed control in sensor-actuator networks < Biologically inspired communication in WSANs < Applications and prototypes. Wireless sensor and actor networks (WSAN) are the confluence point where the traditional fields of wireless sensor networks (WSN), robot networks and control theory meet. In WSAN, nodes collaborate to accomplish distributed sensing and actuation tasks. Leveraged by the control and mobility of actors, the networking process and applications embrace a whole new set of possibilities. Actors may deploy, repair and relocate sensors to improve coverage, build routes and fix network partition to ensure data communication, change network topology to shape routing patterns and balance energy consumption, and respond to reported events in a timely and effective manner. The benefits are limited only by imagination. As an emerging field, WSAN are in need of new networking techniques, by which they can fully exploit their particularities and potentials. WiSARN aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on the design, specification and implementation of architectures, algorithms and protocols for current and future applications of WSAN. Original, unpublished contributions are solicited in ALL aspects of WSAN, WSN, robot networks, and robotics and automation. This opens new ways for mobile users to get connected to each other. In particular, users have more and more the possibility to spontaneously establish direct links between them without the support of a preexisting infrastructure. Due to the natural mobility of the users, it is likely that the resulting topology be intermittently connected. This leads to two main issues. First, nodes must find a way to benefit from contact opportunities whenever possible. Second, given that inter-contact times are unpredictable, applications must better \textit{tolerate delays. In practice, opportunistic and delay-tolerant networks are much closer to real situations than the legacy mobile ad hoc networks. But this comes at the cost of more challenging problems, as traditional communication architectures, commonly based on the end-to-end principle, are not adapted to intermittently connected scenarios. Although the research community has provided major contributions in this area, there are still a lot of questions that remain unanswered. These questions are both related to the understanding of the fundamental aspects of such networks and how to make them become a reality and coexist with other networks. The goal of the proposed special issue is to help filling this gap by presenting contributions ranging from theoretical foundations to practical experiences in opportunistic and delay-tolerant networks. As we intend to focus on both theoretical and practical aspects of these networks, papers presenting insights covering all levels of the communication architecture will be welcome. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Architectural principles of opportunistic and delay-tolerant networks. - Mathematical foundations of challenged networks. - Participatory and opportunistic sensor networks. - Tools and techniques for designing, analyzing, and building opportunistic networks. - Experimental deployments and measurement campaigns. - Investigation of new interaction patterns among users. Wireless communications and smart devices provide many benefits such as mobility, portability and flexibility, increased productivity, and lower installation and maintenance costs. At the same time futurists are speculating about a world of ubiquitous computing and ambient intelligent, in which countless invisible sensors and actuators will communicate with each other, imminently taking care of our needs and wishes. Depending on their specific underlying operational characteristics and deployment environment, these devices have specific platform, application, and communication requirements, and they may be routinely used by millions of users and for a variety of applications. These applications include a myriad of deployment scenarios including WLAN accessibility in order to check email and obtain access to the internet or other networks, buildings and public transport networks, or even engaging into financial transactions with banks or other individuals. As the technologies of next generation wireless networks and smart devices are emerging, security has become a primary concern, in order to ensure dependable, secure communications and services to the end user. This special issue on security of next generation smart devices will present current research focusing on security-related protocols and applications, secure architecture and frameworks, along with new theories and methodologies for secure next generation wireless networks and respective smart devices. The scope of the conference is the design, implementation, deployment, and evaluation of middleware, operating systems, and applications for computing and communications in mobile wireless systems. It aims to provide a high profile, leading edge forum for researchers, engineers, and standards developers to present their latest research activities, techniques, and experiences in the area of software technology for mobile wireless systems. The program committee will evaluate each paper using metrics that are appropriate for the topic area. For example, a systems or experimental paper in the protocol area will be evaluated based on the innovations in the protocol design, practical implementation, and realistic evaluation, whereas a more theoretical paper may be evaluated mostly based on innovation within the algorithm design. At the same time, the evaluation of wireless and mobile networking technologies is challenging because of the significant impact that the physical environment has on performance. For this reason, all papers must carefully describe and justify the evaluation methodology that is used and identify its strengths and weaknesses. The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. *_Challenges Papers_* The conference strongly encourages the submission of short papers in the field of mobile computing and wireless networking that present revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing assumptions prevalent among the research community. The potential of this technology has been acknowledged with the establishment of ambitious research programs worldwide in Europe, US and Asia. The IEEE Vehicular Technology Society (VTS) currently covers through its areas of interest (Mobile Radio, Transportation Systems and Automotive Electronics) all technical aspects needed to make wireless vehicular communications a reality. As a result, the IEEE VTS society decided to establish a technical symposium on wireless vehicular communications co-located with the reputed IEEE VTC conferences. The IEEE International Symposium on Wireless Vehicular Communications (WiVeC) will cover all vehicular wireless communications aspects of Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V), Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) and Vehicle-to-Person (V2P) communications, including implications on transport efficiency and safety, implications on automotive electronics, liability issues, standardizations efforts and spectrum assignment. After the successful first and second WiVeC editions in 2007 and 2008, the third IEEE WiVeC symposium will be co-located with the 71th IEEE Vehicular Technology Conference 2010 Spring conference, and will take place at the Grand Hotel in Taipei on the 16th and 17th of May 2010. Combined registrations packages will be offered for WiVeC and VTC events. All accepted papers (full length and demo papers) will be included in the VTC 2010-Spring conference proceedings and will be published on the IEEE Xplore database. Note: VTC Fall editions are traditionally located in North America, while VTC Spring is located in other areas of the world. Since WiVeC was originally launched co-located with VTC Fall editions, the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society decided that WiVeC would take place every year and a half in order to ensure that the conference is alternatively co-located with VTC Fall and Spring editions. This resulted in that there was no WiVeC edition in 2009. Research has been carried out intensely in different aspects of wireless networking, such as the system architecture, protocol designs, and cross-layered optimization designs. Hence, there is a clear need for disruptive strategies to address all aspects of power efficiency from the user devices through to the core infrastructure of the network and how these devices and equipment interact with each other.
