Pervasive systems address these requirements by providing decision support to rescuers and evacuees, guaranteeing communications and collecting information that is vital for planning and organising the emergency operation. This workshop focuses on pervasive networked sensing and decision making, both wired and wireless, geared towards emergency management. PerNEM 2010 addresses leading edge research in these areas through the use of sensing, communication, decision support, simulation tools and modelling methods with focus on system design, optimisation and experimental evaluation. Following continuous advances in wireless communication technologies, there has been growing interest in the design, development and deployment of BSN systems in applications for improving people's daily life, which has led to an increased demand for interconnecting BSNs with other emerging wireless technologies, such as RFID technology, wireless sensor networks (WSNs), Zigbee, Bluetooth, WiBree, video surveillance systems, WPAN, WLAN, the Internet, and cellular networks. With BSNs being incorporated into these technologies, BSNs have become ubiquitous. As a result of this, and due to an increased demand for advanced e-healthcare management systems in recent years, the marketing opportunities for advanced consumer electronics and related services have greatly increased. More and more autonomous and intelligent applications which are closely integrated with a person's everyday life are being generated. For example, by using BSNs to collect patient information, and by deploying diverse wireless networking systems for enhanced diagnostic assistance and action handling, better e-healthcare management systems can be designed for providing more desirable services. In this workshop, we solicit research papers (regular papers and posters) on hardware for body sensors, system architectures, networking and communication protocols, applications, testbeds and prototypes, biomedical sensor data processing and sensor data management. In particular, we are interested in the following communication issues: * Intra-BSN Communication: The term "intra-BSN communication" defines communications directly related to the user (within radio coverage of about 2 meters), which consists of two categories: (1) the communications amongst the body sensors, which are deployed strategically on the human body, implanted inside the body, or attached within in the person's clothing; (2) the communication between the body sensors and the portable personal server, which typically can be a cell phone, PDA or headset. * Inter-BSN communication: The term "inter-BSN communication" defines communications between the personal server and one or more access points. The access point can be deployed as a part of a home or work infrastructure, or strategically placed within a dynamic environment for handling emergency situations. Inter-BSN communications will interconnect BSNs with the wide range of networks which are easily accessible in daily life. * Beyond-BSN communication: Beyond-BSN communication is used to interconnect a BSN with the outside world, which enhances the application possibilities and brings the coverage / range of body sensor systems a step further via pervasive communication technologies, such as the Internet and cellular networks. The objective of this workshop is to bring together state-of-the-art research contributions, tutorials, and position papers that address these key aspects of Ubiquitous Body Sensor Networks. Original papers describing completed and unpublished work not currently under review by any other journal/magazine/conference/workshop are solicited. Opportunistic networks are commonly defined as a type of challenged networks where communication opportunities are based on sporadic and intermittent contacts, disconnections and re-connections may frequently occur, and the assumption on the existence of an end-to-end path between the source and the destination is released. As compared to the legacy MANETs, where an always-connected infrastructure-less network is assumed, opportunistic networks are much closer to real pervasive networking scenarios, where devices (with sensing capabilities) are carried while users move, and can connect and disconnect continuously relying their communication chances on a store-carry-and-forward approach. The aim of MobiOpp 2010 is to bring together researchers working in this emerging area, thus also providing a reference event for those working on self-organizing wireless mobile networks which usually exploit the opportunistic communication paradigm. In this workshop we aim to explore novel research issues related to all aspects of opportunistic networks. Original contributions are solicited, being related to systems and protocols design, development and analysis, in all areas of Opportunistic Networking. Call for Papers: Special Issue of the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing: Advancement of research in wireless access and mobile systems. --------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- Wireless access has matured and become a distinct research field in its own right. Recent roll-out of wide area true packet based systems such as UMTS and the increasing popularity of WLAN solutions in the enterprise as well as residential settings have led to a situation where multi homing and overlaid access networks are becoming a reality. Experience with such environments has recently prompted the discovery of previously unknown problems and the emergence of new research directions. In addition, the experience has made it possible to solidify and intensify research on traditional wireless network problems such as mobility management and location management. This special issue of the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing is seeking high-quality original unpublished research articles that describe recent advances in the understanding and modeling of wireless access and mobile network behaviour, findings of new problem areas, and solutions to address them. The ACM Multimedia Systems conference provides a forum for researchers, engineers, and scientist to present and share their latest research findings in multimedia systems. While research about specific aspects of multimedia systems is regularly published in the various proceedings and transactions of the networking, operating system, real-time system, and database communities, MMSys aims to cut across these domains in the context of multimedia data types. This provides a unique opportunity to view the intersections and interplay of the various approaches and solutions developed across these domains to deal with multimedia data types. Furthermore, MMSys provides an avenue for communicating research that addresses multimedia systems holistically. Papers should be a maximum of 12 pages in length. Short papers (3-6 pages) are also encouraged and will be evaluated for inclusion in a short-paper track. This convergence of physical computing devices (wireless sensor networks, mobile phones, embedded computers, etc.) and the Internet provides new design opportunities and challenges. The Internet of Things has mainly focused on establishing connectivity in a variety of challenging and constrained networking environments, and the next logical step in the evolution in pervasive computing builds on top of network connectivity by focusing on the application layer: how to develop ubiquitous computing applications on top of heterogeneous devices? The Web of Things is the vision that brings embedded devices into the Web by using Web standards as application protocol to interact with things. This workshop aims at bringing together the pervasive computing and Web communities to explore the possibilities for using the core principles and technologies of modern Web architecture (e.g., HTTP, REST, Atom, JSON) for seamless integration of things into the Web and developing applications on top of web-enabled devices (physical mashups). Research contributions are solicited in the following areas: - Web-based interaction patters for embedded devices (streaming, eventing, etc.) - Applications, deployments, and evaluation of Web of things systems - Human-things interaction models and paradigms (mobile interfaces etc.) - User-oriented, context-aware discovery and dynamic search for the real world - Web composition and macro-programming models (e.g. mashups) - Semantic technologies for description of devices and services - Optimization methods for embedded Web servers and applications - Security, access control, and physical sharing of physical things on the Web Since this workshop is the first in this area, the goal is to develop a community in this area and provide an interactive forum for researchers to learn and discuss about existing efforts to enable cross-fertilization. Hence, we expect all attendees to read all workshop papers in advance and to prepare questions for each. Presentations shall specifically highlight and address similarities and differences wit other accepted papers. This will help to provide a forum to foster future collaboration, beyond the mere presentation of research results. In order to ensure a high-quality technical session, submissions must cover one of the topics above and should not exceed six (6) IEEE conference format pages. Research papers must be original prior unpublished work and not under review elsewhere as they will be published on the IEEE Digital Library. All submissions will be peer-reviewed and selected based on their originality, merit, and relevance to the workshop. This new edition of the conference builds upon the great success of our two previous meetings. While SIMUTools' main focus is on advances in simulation tools, we encourage the submission of papers on all aspects of simulation modeling and analysis, including broader theoretical and practical research contributions. The conference serves as a forum to foster collaborative work by bringing together researchers from academia and industry, and practitioners who develop and who use simulation technologies in a variety of areas. General areas of interest include: - Simulation methods: discrete event, parallel and distributed, hybrid, load balancing, partitioning, simulation-interoperation - Simulation techniques: service-oriented, agent-based, web-based, component-based, symbiotic simulation - Simulation tools, libraries and frameworks, including specialized tools, such as ns-2/3, OPNET, ATDI ICS, Qualnet, OMNET++, NIIST, e-cell, and other open source tools - Modeling formalisms: DEVS, Petri Nets, process algebras, state charts, and others - Simulation verification, validation, accreditation, and analysis: benchmark models, simulation-based verification, workflow, simulation experiment design, optimization, and simulation coercion. The conference also focuses on applications in areas of computer networks and systems, and interdisciplinary areas. In particular, sensor networks are currently recognized as one of the priority research areas and research activities are booming recently. The workshop scope includes network layer problems like data communication (routing, QoS-routing, geocasting, multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and topology control (neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor elimination, etc.). The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global information. Localized algorithms are distributed algorithms where simple local node behavior achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an arbitrary number of nodes, which is the main goal of this plan. Sensor and rooftop/mesh networks, for instance, have hundreds or thousands of nodes. The objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research results on data communication and topology control in rapidly growing area of ad hoc and sensor networks, with emphasizes on localized techniques Topics of Interest ------------------ We are seeking papers that describe original and unpublished contributions addressing various aspects of ad hoc networking. Leveraging sensor systems to support energy efficiency in buildings poses novel research challenges in monitoring how the space is used, controlling devices, interfacing with smart energy meters and communicating with the energy grid. This includes developing energy efficient algorithms of control systems, integrating heterogeneous devices, personalizing and presenting data to generate energy awareness. These challenges include making sensed data available to any connected device, facilitating reasoning from multiple sources of data achieving global energy conservation over a combination of different systems, and devising control systems that support a multitude of network actuators. We solicit contributions that focus on the design of architectures that are capable of improving the global energy efficiency of buildings leveraging connected sensing systems, networks, and devices. Of particular interest is also the application of sensing and actuation technologies to distributed energy generation systems, i.e., systems to generate energy from federated small energy sources such as microgrids and local green energy sources. Due to a rapidly increasing ageing population, current care provision will become strained. A less costly and more practical solution will be to enable those requiring care to stay at home for longer. Those with long-term illness, physical or mental impairments may also prefer to remain in the care of friends and family. Assistive technology helps older people or those with impairments cope with normal life. Specialised technology is also being used to monitor situations such as someone becoming immobile or incapable. The aim is that, through use of sophisticated networking and management software, abnormal situations can be detected, acted upon and/or reported to a carer or a responder. This special session tries to bring together academics and commercial technology providers to explore current research issues with technologies for care at home. Internet social network applications such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter etc. are providing valuable social information on contacts and their relationships. Wireless and mobile devices which are capable of creating, storing, processing, forwarding and sharing content are socially connected in a new radical networking and adaptive architecture harnessing the social behavior and mobility of the users. Thus, SocNets enable the pervasive connectivity without the need to maintain fully connected always-on networks. Such SocNets communities trigger exciting research interests in collaborative systems arising from the analysis of the structure and properties of SocNets. There is clearly an urgent need to protect emerging wireless networks from various security and privacy threats, thereby eliminating a major impediment to their widespread adoption of such networks. The last few years have experienced a steep growth in research on wireless networks having attractive claims. Researchers are currently envisioning different attractive properties of wireless systems such as the ability to self-organize, self-configure, self-heal, self-manage and self-maintain. Different wireless networks having the potential to offer cost-effective home and enterprise access networking solutions are being researched. Technologies such as Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs), WiFi, WiMax, Bluetooth, 802.20, 802.22 and software defined radio are gaining popularity. Even though these technologies hold great promises for our future, there are several research challenges that need to be addressed. Some of these research challenges are attributed to the simulation, modeling and characterization of these emerging wireless networks. The attractive properties of these new network technologies make simulation and modeling particularly challenging, where the existing tools and approaches are marginally useful. International Journal of Communication Networks and Distributed Systems (IJCNDS)* *Call For papers* *Special Issue on: "Recent Advances in Next-Generation and Resource-Constrained Converged Networks"* Right from its beginning, the Internet has proven to be a vital medium of communication for society, be it entertainment, business, telecommunication, etc. It has rapidly found its way into our daily activities. Due to our high dependence on its functionalities, it can be regarded as one of the most integral parts of our lives. By observing the success of the Internet and packet-switched networks, recent initiatives such as NGN (Next Generation Networks) and IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) have been undertaken to provide a seamless architecture for various access technologies. Furthermore, by integrating different technologies, for example SDP (Service Delivery Platform) and IMS, easy service delivery, execution and management are now possible. Other issues, such as point-to-point and broadcasting communications, data and multimedia oriented services, mobile and cellular systems, fast fibre and mobility, remain a challenging endeavour and, to say the least, the end-to-end picture is still unclear. On the other hand, efforts such as 6LoWPAN are also trying to connect resource constrained sensor networks to the Internet to provide a ubiquitous environment, creating the Internet of Things. This leads to a highly distributed network of devices communicating with human beings as well as other devices. With the increase of heterogeneity, it becomes very difficult to ensure interactions with devices in a unified manner. In short, even though the recent advances in network convergence offer new realities, there are several research challenges and issues that need to be addressed. For example, the heterogeneity of the networks imposes difficulties and challenges in ensuring network security, QoS provisioning, route optimisation and so on. In particular, sensor networks are currently recognized as one of the priority research areas and research activities are booming recently. The workshop scope includes network layer problems like data communication (routing, QoS-routing, geocasting, multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and topology control (neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor elimination, etc.). The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global information. Localized algorithms are distributed algorithms where simple local node behavior achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an arbitrary number of nodes, which is the main goal of this plan. Sensor and rooftop/mesh networks, for instance, have hundreds or thousands of nodes. A smart digital home refers to a living space with devices that are connected through wired or wireless networks. The connected devices may be sensors, actors, consumer electronics, appliances, mobile and PC devices that cooperate transparently for facilitating living and improving usability in the home. Sensors can capture the and/or detect physical phenomena, like temperature, humidity, illumination, etc., of living environments and notify other devices of the phenomena; actors and other devices can then act according to the phenomena to provide context aware services. Home care of the old, the young, the sick and the disabled can benefit from smart digital home technologies, by which carers are able to acquire the states of the home and the residents anytime, anywhere and to take proper actions immediately. By the technologies, proper actions can also be triggered automatically in the presence of specific events, such as resident falling, and stove catching fire, etc. Smart digital home technologies enable working from home, remote education, network shopping, online gaming, etc. High speed broadband network access and all-IP technologies enabled by frameworks of IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem), SDP (Service Delivery Platforms), DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance), and so on, offer new communication capabilities. We can foresee that innovative smart digital home applications benefiting from high network capabilities will be blooming in the near future. Since a variety of devices presents in a smart digital home, convergent (across all the screens of TVs, PCs, appliances and mobile devices) and personalized user experience is evidently the key for the success of new residential applications. Automating the sensor network activities is also an urgent and challenging issue especially that commonly sensing devices are operating unattended in remote and hostile areas where manual maintenance is nearly impossible. Since predefined and late decisions do not help much in improving the efficiency of networked sensing devices, automation and autonomy are very important mechanisms in addressing upcoming developments that target multi-services, collaborating, or competing sensor networks. IPSN brings together researchers from academia, industry, and government to present and discuss recent advances in both theoretical and experimental research. Its scope includes signal and image processing, information and coding theory, databases and information management, distributed algorithms, networks and protocols, wireless communications, machine learning, and embedded systems design. The conference features two interleaved tracks, the Information Processing (IP) track, and the Sensor Platforms, Tools and Design Methods (SPOTS) track. The two tracks have separate program committees to evaluate their submissions. Authors should carefully review the intended foci of these two tracks to decide which track is better suited for their work, and they are encouraged to contact program chairs with questions or clarifications. HotMobile's small workshop format makes it ideal for presenting and discussing new directions or controversial approaches. We solicit submissions of position papers that focus primarily on applications and systems and that propose new directions of research, advocate non-traditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate controversy and discussion. We particularly look for position papers containing highly original ideas in the following topic areas, although papers describing other challenges unique to or exacerbated by mobility are also welcome: * Operating system and distributed systems support for mobile computing * Coordination, aggregation, and spontaneous interaction of mobile devices * Novel applications, environments, and devices supporting mobility * HCI issues related to mobile computing * Security and privacy of mobile computing * Management, configuration, and deployment of systems supporting mobility Submissions describing new lower-level technologies are welcome if they focus on how the technology is being used or integrated into a system or application. HotMobile 2010 will be a highly interactive workshop. Submissions will be judged based upon originality, technical merit, topical relevance, and likelihood of leading to insightful discussion at the workshop Presentation at HotMobile is a good way to get early feedback on research ideas that are a year or more from submission as a full conference paper to the ACM MobiSys conference or other high-quality conferences. Submitting a full-length paper on the same topic to MobiSys in less than a year is unlikely to involve a sufficient increment of work and maturity of ideas.To encourage an atmosphere conducive to participation, attendance will be limited to 70 participants. Authors of submitted papers and accepted demo proposals will be given first priority, with others able to register on a space-available basis. Internet social network applications such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter etc. are providing valuable social information on contacts and their relationships. Wireless and mobile devices which are capable of creating, storing, processing, forwarding and sharing content are socially connected in a new radical networking and adaptive architecture harnessing the social behavior and mobility of the users. Thus, SocNets enable the pervasive connectivity without the need to maintain fully connected always-on networks. Such SocNets communities trigger exciting research interests in collaborative systems arising from the analysis of the structure and properties of SocNets. The use of private social information provides additional avenues for new networking operations --- for example, problems that allow the exploitation of SocNets to solve network and system security vulnerabilities, and how these new social network solutions can shape the design of secured distributed systems and networks; development of cross-layered architecture for diverse pervasive applications to distribute user-generated content based on social relationships and behaviors; etc. It also requires the cross-disciplinary research integration of computer science and engineering, biology, physics, anthropology, social sciences, etc. The goal of this special session is to catalyze cross-disciplinary research discussions that are of relevance to new and novel computer networking ideas, applications and experimental results in the area of SocNets. We solicit papers covering various topics of interest that include (but are not limited to) the following: -- Implications of social networking on future network architecture -- System design for social networks -- New social science of networks -- Physical and virtual social networks -- Social-based mobility -- Mobile and pervasive social networks -- Social community-based communication -- Real world applications of social network analysis and theory -- New social-inspired content creation and distribution networks -- New aspects of trust, privacy and security systems in social networking -- Data confidentiality and integrity in social networks Submission Instructions Authors are invited to submit regular technical papers or position papers. However, this architecture is losing its original simplicity and transparency as new classes of applications, business models, security mechanisms, scalability enablers and operational and management requirements give rise to point solutions that extend the architecture without regards to its original design principles. Although these developments are necessary in the short term to allow the Internet to continue to operate under the present economical, technical and social conditions, in combination, they have significantly reduced the potential for longer-term evolution of the Internet architecture. This loss of flexibility is already being felt as the number of Internet nodes grows by another order of magnitude. Several substantial Future Internet initiatives are underway in Europe, the Americas and Asia, and the vendor and network operator communities are also actively discussing the limitations of the current Internet architecture as well as its potential evolution. The first solution proposals in this space have already started to be analyzed. ReArch'09 - the second instance of this workshop since its very successful debut at CONeXT 2008 - will discuss the underlying problems of the Internet architecture and protocols and debate how we might fix them in a way that regains us the original architectural simplicity and clarity of the Internet for another 30+ years. This workshop solicits original, high-quality papers that analyze and discuss ideas for a new Internet architecture, including specific improvements to current Internet protocols, especially at the internetworking, transport and application layers, new internetworking components that integrate into the existing architecture and ideas for clean-slate internetworking architectures. Topics ReArch'09 covers all aspects related to the current and future Internet architecture including, but not limited to, the following impact: * New networking paradigms * New business models * New routing architectures * New traffic engineering and congestion control mechanisms * Measurements and analyses that characterize and quantify architectural limitations * New architecture proposals and their implications for research and operations * New protocols to address specific architectural limitations * Studies of interactions between stakeholders of the Internet and the architecture itself * Design principles and interfaces to accommodate the conflicting interests of stakeholders in the architecture * Principles of evolving future architectures * Discussions on interworking with the existing Internet and deployability Papers that present interesting, fresh ideas at an early stage are more suitable for this workshop than highly polished results or incremental refinements of previous work. To provide a specific example that relates to Internet access (connectivity), the end-user (or a community of end-users) is a micro-operator in the sense that he/she shares his/her subscribed broadband Internet access based on some form of incentive scheme. In addition, the end-user may or may not provide other network functionality such as local mobility management, or persistent storage and forwarding services. This new role is disruptive in what concerns Internet service models, since there is no distinction between what is today known as end-user device and network device: in the future, end-user devices will actively participate as part of the network. In contrast, the Internet has been up to now mostly the means for end-users to obtain some form of network service, originally related to connectivity, person-to-person communication, or information retrieval. Such user-centric provider role is also disruptive given that the regular network boundaries of trust have to be extended in a way that should mimic social behavior: there is the need to form networks of trust in order to accommodate a robust network growth, given that the key to such growth is the willingness to cooperate. Another disruptive aspect of user-provided networking is that due to the nature of the wireless media and the way that humans move, support for intermittent connectivity as well as fast and transparent roaming between micro-operators needs to be considered. Finally, and given that user-provided networking spreads dynamically having as network elements regular end-user devices, there is the need to consider cases where information is opportunistically relayed instead of routed based on topological information. Due to the disruptive aspects mentioned, user-provided networking seem to have the potential to provide a paradigm shift in Internet communication models, given that such novel functionality allow wireless networks to operate in a completely autonomic way and also given that the end-user becomes a provider of Internet services (e.g. connectivity) based upon cooperation incentives or rewards and based upon his/her own mobility and social patterns. Services are established on the fly, and do not necessarily imply the use of multihop technology or routing. For instance, connectivity may be, in most cases, simply relayed. The workshop program will include presentations of peer-reviewed papers and a discussion panel with guests from industry and academia. We envision U-NET as a forum aiming to ignite a debate concerning technical challenges and impact (negatively or positively) that user-provided networking may have on Internet communication models. *Topics* U-NET'09 solicits high quality technical contributions within the context of user-provided networking. While there have been numerous small-scale WSN test bed implementations by the research community, large-scale implementations, involving hundreds or even thousands of nodes which are static or mobile are still unheard of. This symposium focuses on the theoretical and practical challenges faced when dealing with large-scale wireless sensor networks involving static and/or mobile nodes. Networks which scale thousands of static and/or mobile nodes need to possess a number of inherent characteristics in order to function properly. For example, scalability and distributed operation are essential characteristics for any large scale deployment. WSNs will only be widely adopted, if end-users are given guarantees about the operation of the system. Thus providing QoS guarantees is very important. However, providing such guarantees can be very difficult especially when one considers the unreliability of wireless links in WSNs. As resources such as energy, bandwidth, memory and computational power are highly constrained, novel techniques are required to manage the resources by maximizing the usage of cross-layer information, in order to guarantee the operation of the network in accordance with the end-user's requirements. The fact that manually administering every node individually is impossible, makes it vital for the system to have self-organizing and self-learni ng capabilities in every section of the protocol stack. Heterogeneity is another characteristic that makes the overall network architecture more robust and efficient. This symposium seeks papers that present novel solutions to the problems listed above.
