This year's focus will be on Heterogeneous Systems. Like the previous conferences in this series, it continues to be an important forum for computer architecture research. In 2010 ARCS will be hosted by the Leibniz University of Hannover. The proceedings of ARCS 2010 will be published in the Springer Lecture Notes on Computer Science (LNCS) series (pending). After the conference, authors of selected papers will be invited to submit an extended version of their contribution for publication in a special issue of the Journal of Systems Architecture. Also, a best paper and best presentation award will be presented at the conference. Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) is a promising technology that handles the mobility management and provides the seamless mobile communications. In MIPv6, it has been observed that mobility for mobile devices can be more efficiently handled if mobility management is broken down into localized mobility management and global mobility management. Therefore, host-based approaches such as Fast-Handovers for MIPv6 (FMIPv6) and Hierarchical MIPv6 (HMIPv6) have been proposed for localized mobility management. In addition, Proxy MIPv6 (PMIPv6) has been presented for the network-based localized mobility management (NETLMM), which does not require mobile devices to be involved in the signaling for mobility management. This workshop will focus on the challenges and solutions for MIPv6 with an emphasis on PMIPv6 and NETLMM, which have recently gained considerable attention. Internet social network applications such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter etc. are providing valuable social information on contacts and their relationships. Wireless and mobile devices which are capable of creating, storing, processing, forwarding and sharing content are socially connected in a new radical networking and adaptive architecture harnessing the social behavior and mobility of the users. Thus, SocNets enable the pervasive connectivity without the need to maintain fully connected always-on networks. Such SocNets communities trigger exciting research interests in collaborative systems arising from the analysis of the structure and properties of SocNets. The use of private social information provides additional avenues for new networking operations --- for example, problems that allow the exploitation of SocNets to solve network and system security vulnerabilities, and how these new social network solutions can shape the design of secured distributed systems and networks; development of cross-layered architecture for diverse pervasive applications to distribute user-generated content based on social relationships and behaviors; etc. It also requires the cross-disciplinary research integration of computer science and engineering, biology, physics, anthropology, social sciences, etc. The goal of this special session is to catalyze cross-disciplinary research discussions that are of relevance to new and novel computer networking ideas, applications and experimental results in the area of SocNets. Please feel free to distribute it to those who might be interested. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS LOCAN 2009 The 5th International Workshop on Localized Communication and Topology Protocols for Ad hoc Networks http://www.site.uottawa.ca/~xuli/locan2009 In conjunction with MSN, 14-16, Dec. 2009 Wu Yi Mountain, China Subject and Purpose of the Workshop ----------------------------------- This workshop covers comprehensively the algorithmic issues in the hot area of ad hoc and sensor networking. In particular, sensor networks are currently recognized as one of the priority research areas and research activities are booming recently. The workshop scope includes network layer problems like data communication (routing, QoS-routing, geocasting, multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and topology control (neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor elimination, etc.). The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global information. Localized algorithms are distributed algorithms where simple local node behavior achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an arbitrary number of nodes, which is the main goal of this plan. Sensor and rooftop/mesh networks, for instance, have hundreds or thousands of nodes. The objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research results on data communication and topology control in rapidly growing area of ad hoc and sensor networks, with emphasizes on localized techniques Topics of Interest ------------------ We are seeking papers that describe original and unpublished contributions addressing various aspects of ad hoc networking. Possible topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Medium access control for ad hoc networks * Analytical, mobility and validation models for ad hoc networks * Hybrid networks and wireless Internet * Security in ad hoc networks * Data management, query processing, and data delivery in sensor networks * Unicast routing, multicasting, and broadcasting in ad hoc networks * Geocasting and anycasting in ad hoc networks * Energy-efficient and bandwidth-efficient protocols for ad hoc networks * Quality of service in medium access control and routing * Topology construction and maintenance in ad hoc networks * Neighborhood discovery and mobility management in ad hoc networks * Localized protocols for duty-cycled sensor networks * Auto-configuration and network formation protocols and algorithms * Relative positioning algorithms * Lower bounds on information exchange required for localized solutions * Network graph properties supporting localized protocols * Worst and average case analysis on the deviation from optimal solutions Submissions ----------- Papers must not exceed 8 single-spaced and two-column pages using at least 10 point size type on 8.5 x 11 inches pages. However, this architecture is losing its original simplicity and transparency as new classes of applications, business models, security mechanisms, scalability enablers and operational and management requirements give rise to point solutions that extend the architecture without regards to its original design principles. Although these developments are necessary in the short term to allow the Internet to continue to operate under the present economical, technical and social conditions, in combination, they have significantly reduced the potential for longer-term evolution of the Internet architecture. This loss of flexibility is already being felt as the number of Internet nodes grows by another order of magnitude. Several substantial Future Internet initiatives are underway in Europe, the Americas and Asia, and the vendor and network operator communities are also actively discussing the limitations of the current Internet architecture as well as its potential evolution. The first solution proposals in this space have already started to be analyzed. ReArch'09 - the second instance of this workshop since its very successful debut at CONeXT 2008 - will discuss the underlying problems of the Internet architecture and protocols and debate how we might fix them in a way that regains us the original architectural simplicity and clarity of the Internet for another 30+ years. This workshop solicits original, high-quality papers that analyze and discuss ideas for a new Internet architecture, including specific improvements to current Internet protocols, especially at the internetworking, transport and application layers, new internetworking components that integrate into the existing architecture and ideas for clean-slate internetworking architectures. Topics ReArch'09 covers all aspects related to the current and future Internet architecture including, but not limited to, the following impact: * New networking paradigms * New business models * New routing architectures * New traffic engineering and congestion control mechanisms * Measurements and analyses that characterize and quantify architectural limitations * New architecture proposals and their implications for research and operations * New protocols to address specific architectural limitations * Studies of interactions between stakeholders of the Internet and the architecture itself * Design principles and interfaces to accommodate the conflicting interests of stakeholders in the architecture * Principles of evolving future architectures * Discussions on interworking with the existing Internet and deployability Papers that present interesting, fresh ideas at an early stage are more suitable for this workshop than highly polished results or incremental refinements of previous work. To do this, a multidisciplinary approach is necessary starting from the integration of new wearable technologies in a single Body Area Network to the design and development of system architectures and middleware solutions able to support efficient and dependable services like continuous remote monitoring, patient tracking, and ambient assistance. The IEEE PerHealth workshop will provide a forum where researchers in the area of Pervasive Healthcare can discuss current results in the field and possible hints for future work. In addition, they include monitoring applications such as video surveillance, traffic enforcement and control systems, advanced health care delivery, structural health monitoring, and industrial process control. In spite of the increasing demand for multimedia wireless networking, we are still lacking a clear understanding of analytical and computational techniques, as well as best practices, to design resource allocation schemes, communication protocols, and self-organization algorithms for wireless multimedia ad hoc and sensor networks that will deliver, in a predictable and quantifiable fashion, the quality of service and experience required by the end user. In addition, while significant advances in physical layer techniques offer new opportunities for cross-layer optimizations designed to satisfy application needs, efforts to leverage these techniques from a networking perspective to support the needs of multimedia traffic demands in multi-hop wireless networks are still at initial stages. In particular, dynamic spectrum access and cognitive radios, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques, ultra-wide-band and cooperative communications, among other techniques, will have a profound impact on our ability to flexibly and predictably deliver multimedia content over wireless networks. Finally, with a few exceptions, processing of multimedia content has mostly been approached as a problem isolated from the network-design problem. However, in-network processing and delivery of multimedia content are not independent and their interaction has a major impact on the levels of quality of service (QoS) that can be delivered. Hence, it is necessary to develop flexible and self-organizing architectures and algorithms to flexibly perform in-network processing of multimedia contents. This special issue solicits papers on all aspects of multimedia ad hoc and sensor networks, with a primary focus on three key aspects. First, content-aware cross-layer design and resource allocation techniques, as well as new networking protocols based on metrics associated with quality of service/video/experience are of particular interest. Second, original papers examining networking aspects that leverage advances in physical and multiple access techniques to support multimedia traffic are particularly welcome. Third, papers investigating the interdependencies between multimedia in-network processing and networking aspects are sought, e.g., architectures and techniques to store, process in real-time, correlate and fuse multimedia data originating from heterogeneous sources. The objective of this special issue is to bring together state-of-the-art research contributions, tutorials, and position papers that address these key aspects of multimedia content delivery over ad hoc and sensor networks. Automating the sensor network activities is also an urgent and challenging issue especially that commonly sensing devices are operating unattended in remote and hostile areas where manual maintenance is nearly impossible. Since predefined and late decisions do not help much in improving the efficiency of networked sensing devices, automation and autonomy are very important mechanisms in addressing upcoming developments that target multi-services, collaborating, or competing sensor networks. This leads to a highly distributed network of devices communicating with human beings as well as other devices. With the increase of heterogeneity, it becomes very difficult to insure interactions with devices in a unified manner. Enabling seamless convergence and interoperability of heterogeneous devices will be one of the key factors to the success of the Future Internet of Things. Moreover the Future Internet requires intelligent interaction with the environment leading to the emergence of wireless sensor networks connected to the Internet. There is a need for those networks to provide their information in an interpretable form and to reduce the complexity of accessing sensor services for applications or other systems. The challenge lies in developing and selecting the right software frameworks, architectures, and protocols to publish embedded services via the Internet. Web technologies have been used to provide an interface to distributed services. This approach and the need for adaptable interfaces asks for service oriented middleware approaches providing common base functionality for service interaction and communication such as interface description languages, and marshalling mechanisms. In addition, middleware solutions for embedded systems need to monitor, and manage quality of service aspects, such as response time, resource consumption, throughput, availability, reliability and security. While web services being a standard and widely adopted technology for the standard Internet, embedded systems as the worker nodes for the Internet of Things need to catch up in utilizing these technologies. Embedded distributed systems can implement service oriented architectures as a promising approach to solve the complexity of distributed embedded applications and propagate web services as a cross-domain technology. Wireless sensor/actor networks, where the sensors are connected to and controlled by embedded systems may benefit from this approach, where services encapsulate the functionality and provide unified access to the functionality of the system through a middleware layer. The goal of this workshop is to bring together industrial or academic researchers and developers interested in connecting limited embedded (web) services and/or sensor networks with the Internet in order to build the Internet of Things. Through paper presentations and discussions, this workshop will contribute to the exchange of knowledge and ideas, dissemination of results about completed and on-going research projects, as well as identification and analysis of remaining open research issues. He completed management programmes at U.S. business schools (Kellogg/ Chicago and Babson/Boston). * Peter Marwedel Prof. Dr Marwedel is the head of UniDo/ES. His experience covers a wide range of topics in embedded systems. In 2003, he published a very influential text book on embedded system design which is setting standards worldwide. In the same year, he received the teaching award of his University. He is also heading the local technology transfer centre ICD. It has also brought many challenges for the communication and networking community to address. On one hand we see present day mobile devices are capable of providing many services that required several devices before. For example, most cell phones nowadays provide high speed data access, still and video cameras, PDA functionality, etc. These advances in device sophistication and service offerings, including wireless hotspots, have made a difference in the way we communicate. With increased user mobility and user's desire to always be connected, we have seen a growing interest in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Body Area Networks (BANs). These networks can be tuned and applied meaningfully for individual users and their requirements. On the other hand the Internet has changed our way of interacting dramatically. These two major communication areas are having an in-depth influence on the way we communicate; it is worth considering them 'together' as the future communication vehicle. Personalized Networks is one such future oriented concept where we seek to bring BANs, PANs, WLAN, sensor networks, ad hoc networks, home networks, vehicular networks and the Internet together onto one platform under one broader vision of future (4G) communication networks. The idea is to enable continuous and seamless connectivity of all the personal devices of a user, information sources, and network enabled controllers in an unobtrusive way, regardless of where these entities are located - be they local or remote. It is a microcosm of the persons themselves with their associated accessories somewhere on the Internet. It is equivalent to the Internet presence that has become a prominent concept in the last decade. This advanced overlay network is strongly person oriented and must be ad hoc, intelligent and must behave as a user-friendly virtual intelligent personal assistant to its owner. It is a personal distributed environment, global in scope that can co-exist on the present day Internet with its active participation. Such a platform enables many new applications, especially for users with rapidly changing communication demands that often operate in various contexts simultaneously. It can also provide the much needed user-friendliness to many services of today. There are numerous issues which are challenging to the communication network community in realizing a Personalized Network. Most of them arise from the lack of current technology to deal in a transparent way with the dynamic and mobile nature of the entities, the unpredictable topology of the network, the power constraints of the mobile devices, and the heterogeneity of the networking and link-level technologies. Therefore, creating a Personalized Network yields new architectures, protocols, algorithms, platforms, middleware, etc. They take care of addressing, routing, resource and service discovery, the self-organization of the network, the localization of the devices/person, the complex security and privacy requirements, the offering of context aware services and service management. Many of these issues, ventured upon earlier under various mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) and mobile network research initiatives, need to be reconsidered in this case. These technologies have to meet strict requirements with respect to user perception, viable business models, usage of communication bandwidth, protocol complexity, robustness, availability of links and infrastructure, dependability and trust. _Scope of the submission _We seek original contributions which are aimed at finding solutions to the problems that are outlined above towards realization of a Personalized Network. We have identified the following major topics under which we try to categorize the submissions. However, we will consider any other original, interesting, and imaginative ideas and thoughts towards meeting this goal of a Personalized Network. * Architectural framework of personalized networks * Personalized Network Applications * Personal Communications in the next generation Internet * Personal Networks for rural areas * Context Awareness * Resource, service and context discovery * Self-organization and adaptation * Addressing and routing * Interworking between PANs, ad hoc networks, etc, and infrastructure-based heterogeneous networks * Mobility of personalized networks * Security, privacy and anonymity * Zero configuration methods and other enablers for ease-of-use * Dependability * Application-driven communication substrates * Personalized networks for group oriented networking * New QoS concepts in personalized networks * QoS across heterogeneous Networks and Devices * Mapping of functional requirements to physical devices and resources * Modeling and simulation of personalized networks * P2P paradigm in personalized networks * Innovative applications or prototypes and demonstrations of such person centric applications are equally valued _Why should you participate in this workshop? _Personalized Networks is a concrete vision of the future networks, yet very current, in the field of communications. It attracts researchers from both wired and wireless domains. This workshop is an ideal platform to share a vision of where we are heading, interact, and strongly advocate an exciting new avenue for researchers and practitioners in the field of communication. Further, the final program would consist of carefully selected - with at least three peer reviews - and high quality submissions with a large emphasis on new ideas rather than incremental contributions to the field. The necessity for and expected benefit of self-organization is caused by the growing scale, complexity, and heterogeneity of future networked systems, like the future Internet. Future networks will form complex networks integrating wired and wireless infrastructures with mobile ad-hoc, and sensor networks that could be spontaneously deployed in hostile environments, have a dynamic population and a potentially short life time. In spite of this, there will be stringent user requirements, such as high availability and real-time guarantees. Although self-organization is desirable for these kinds of networks, it is not yet clear to what extent self-organization can be exploited. Research into networked systems started a few years ago to systematically investigate self-organization and has lead to a multitude of open research issues. The applicability of well-known self-organizing techniques to specific networks and networked systems is being investigated, as well as adaptations and novel approaches inspired by cooperation in nature and evolutionary dynamics, sociology, and game theory. Additionally, models originating from areas like control theory and complex systems research, are being applied to networked systems to analyze their controllability and behavior. Aspects of engineering self-organizing networked systems are studied that draw on approaches like programmable networks, and tools and frameworks for deploying, testing, and monitoring self-organizing networks. The role of self-organization in the future Internet and the impact on its architecture is an important topic, as well as the application of self-organization in future intelligent transportation systems and vehicular ad-hoc networks. Building on the success of its predecessors, this workshop aims at bringing together leading international researchers to create a visionary forum for discussing the future of self-organization in networked systems. This leads to a highly distributed network of devices communicating with human beings as well as other devices. With the increase of heterogeneity, it becomes very difficult to insure interactions with devices in a unified manner. Enabling seamless convergence and interoperability of heterogeneous devices will be one of the key factors to the success of the Future Internet of Things. Moreover the Future Internet requires intelligent interaction with the environment leading to the emergence of wireless sensor networks connected to the Internet. There is a need for those networks to provide their information in an interpretable form and to reduce the complexity of accessing sensor services for applications or other systems. The challenge lies in developing and selecting the right software frameworks, architectures, and protocols to publish embedded services via the Internet. Web technologies have been used to provide an interface to distributed services. This approach and the need for adaptable interfaces asks for service oriented middleware approaches providing common base functionality for service interaction and communication such as interface description languages, and marshalling mechanisms. In addition, middleware solutions for embedded systems need to monitor, and manage quality of service aspects, such as response time, resource consumption, throughput, availability, reliability and security. While web services being a standard and widely adopted technology for the standard Internet, embedded systems as the worker nodes for the Internet of Things need to catch up in utilizing these technologies. Embedded distributed systems can implement service oriented architectures as a promising approach to solve the complexity of distributed embedded applications and propagate web services as a cross-domain technology. Wireless sensor/actor networks, where the sensors are connected to and controlled by embedded systems may benefit from this approach, where services encapsulate the functionality and provide unified access to the functionality of the system through a middleware layer. The goal of this workshop is to bring together industrial or academic researchers and developers interested in connecting limited embedded (web) services and/or sensor networks with the Internet in order to build the Internet of Things. Through paper presentations and discussions, this workshop will contribute to the exchange of knowledge and ideas, dissemination of results about completed and on-going research projects, as well as identification and analysis of remaining open research issues. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Architectural Issues in Future Internet of Things * Real world applications and scenarios for embedded web services * Interoperability of heterogeneous systems * Event-driven SOAs & Device-centric SOA * Service creation, deployment, life cycle management * Tool support for service creation, validation and testing * Enterprise application integration * Protocols for efficient message transmission to embedded devices * Web services and Middleware for embedded environments * SOA-based integration of IT systems in the healthcare enterprise * Web services executing in mobile or pervasive environments * Distributed sensor networks for remote monitoring and surveillance * Web services for field bus systems Submission Instructions Papers have to be submitted electronically, through the EasyChairSystem: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=fits2009 Papers should be written in English and should be no more than 6 pages for full papers and 4 pages for short papers (font Times 11pt). He completed management programmes at U.S. business schools (Kellogg/ Chicago and Babson/Boston). * Peter Marwedel Prof. Dr Marwedel is the head of UniDo/ES. His experience covers a wide range of topics in embedded systems. In 2003, he published a very influential text book on embedded system design which is setting standards worldwide. In the same year, he received the teaching award of his University. He is also heading the local technology transfer centre ICD. It has also brought many challenges for the communication and networking community to address. On one hand we see present day mobile devices are capable of providing many services that required several devices before. For example, most cell phones nowadays provide high speed data access, still and video cameras, PDA functionality, etc. These advances in device sophistication and service offerings, including wireless hotspots, have made a difference in the way we communicate. With increased user mobility and user's desire to always be connected, we have seen a growing interest in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Body Area Networks (BANs). These networks can be tuned and applied meaningfully for individual users and their requirements. On the other hand the Internet has changed our way of interacting dramatically. These two major communication areas are having an in-depth influence on the way we communicate; it is worth considering them 'together' as the future communication vehicle. Personalized Networks is one such future oriented concept where we seek to bring BANs, PANs, WLAN, sensor networks, ad hoc networks, home networks, vehicular networks and the Internet together onto one platform under one broader vision of future (4G) communication networks. The idea is to enable continuous and seamless connectivity of all the personal devices of a user, information sources, and network enabled controllers in an unobtrusive way, regardless of where these entities are located - be they local or remote. It is a microcosm of the persons themselves with their associated accessories somewhere on the Internet. It is equivalent to the Internet presence that has become a prominent concept in the last decade. This advanced overlay network is strongly person oriented and must be ad hoc, intelligent and must behave as a user-friendly virtual intelligent personal assistant to its owner. It is a personal distributed environment, global in scope that can co-exist on the present day Internet with its active participation. Such a platform enables many new applications, especially for users with rapidly changing communication demands that often operate in various contexts simultaneously. It can also provide the much needed user-friendliness to many services of today. There are numerous issues which are challenging to the communication network community in realizing a Personalized Network. Most of them arise from the lack of current technology to deal in a transparent way with the dynamic and mobile nature of the entities, the unpredictable topology of the network, the power constraints of the mobile devices, and the heterogeneity of the networking and link-level technologies. Therefore, creating a Personalized Network yields new architectures, protocols, algorithms, platforms, middleware, etc. They take care of addressing, routing, resource and service discovery, the self-organization of the network, the localization of the devices/person, the complex security and privacy requirements, the offering of context aware services and service management. Many of these issues, ventured upon earlier under various mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) and mobile network research initiatives, need to be reconsidered in this case. These technologies have to meet strict requirements with respect to user perception, viable business models, usage of communication bandwidth, protocol complexity, robustness, availability of links and infrastructure, dependability and trust. Scope of the submission We seek original contributions which are aimed at finding solutions to the problems that are outlined above towards realization of a Personalized Network. We have identified the following major topics under which we try to categorize the submissions. Personalized Networks is a concrete vision of the future networks, yet very current, in the field of communications. It attracts researchers from both wired and wireless domains. This workshop is an ideal platform to share a vision of where we are heading, interact, and strongly advocate an exciting new avenue for researchers and practitioners in the field of communication. Further, the final program would consist of carefully selected - with at least three peer reviews - and high quality submissions with a large emphasis on new ideas rather than incremental contributions to the field. Submissions of shorter versions of full papers that can be submitted to other conferences/journal in the near future are discouraged. Submission Instructions Submitted papers must represent original material that is not currently under review in any other conference or journal, and has not been previously published. Paper length should not exceed five-page technical paper manuscript. Papers should be submitted in a .pdf or .ps format to the EDAS paper submission website. Both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications are used to implement a number of promising applications such as local hazard warning, efficient route planning and coordination of traffic flows. Even truly cooperative and, therefore, extremely challenging applications like cross traffic collision avoidance are being considered. In the last years a number of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) related projects and initiatives have been carried out (or will be completed soon). In Europe, for example, the European Commission initiated the eSafety Program to reduce the road fatalities by 50% before 2010 and to improve traffic efficiency. These R&D projects have created a solid technical basis for vehicular communications, and some of them have also performed some preliminary experiences, from what some important results have been obtained ("lessons learned"), as for example the Vehicle Infrastructure Integration (VII) in the US as well as several projects in Europe. All the aforementioned research efforts and initiatives can be considered as the 'phase 1' in the development of vehicular communications networks. This phase represents an initial and very important step towards the goals of improving road safety and traffic efficiency, and providing Internet services to the vehicles. Important achievements, architectural decisions and conclusions have been the outcome of this 'phase 1', such as the development of wireless physical and MAC protocols suited for the vehicular environment (e.g. IEEE 802.11p), new network architectures (some of them not based on classical TCP/IP), etc. We are now witnessing the 'phase 2' of research and development in vehicular communications networks, a new phase in which standardization and field trials will play a key role, as well as the refinement and extension of the network architectures and protocols defined in the 'phase 1'. Scope and Contributions The goal of this special issue is to share the research developments and efforts of this new phase ('phase 2') in the vehicular communications area. Paper submissions are invited on the following topics: * Overview of state-of-the-art for vehicular communication technologies and open challenges. * Network protocols for cooperative vehicular communications, such as geonetworking (geographical routing and addressing). * Networking aspects for use of 2G/3G cellular systems for vehicular communications. * New system architectures enabling the provision of safety, traffic efficiency and infotainment services in vehicular scenarios. * Security, location privacy and reliability issues. * Integration of IP protocols into the vehicular scenario. * Standardization for vehicular communications worldwide, interoperability and harmonization issues. * Field operational tests (FOTs) for cooperative systems employing vehicular communications networks. * Regulatory aspects. Call for Papers Special Session: Advanced Technologies for Care at Home at IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference IEEE CCNC 2010 January 9 - 12, 2010, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA http://www.ieee-ccnc.org/2010 Due to a rapidly increasing ageing population, current care provision will become strained. A less costly and more practical solution will be to enable those requiring care to stay at home for longer. Those with long-term illness, physical or mental impairments may also prefer to remain in the care of friends and family. Assistive technology helps older people or those with impairments cope with normal life. Specialised technology is also being used to monitor situations such as someone becoming immobile or incapable. The aim is that, through use of sophisticated networking and management software, abnormal situations can be detected, acted upon and/or reported to a carer or a responder. This special session tries to bring together academics and commercial technology providers to explore current research issues with technologies for care at home. Topics of particular interest (but not limited to) include: • Integrated Home Care systems • Network Technologies for assistive technologies • User interfaces for care systems • Context aware health applications • Novel sensors, actuators, and augmented appliances for use in assistive systems • Mobile health applications • Experimental results and case studies on the use of technology for care at home All accepted submissions will be published in the proceedings of IEEE CCNC 2010. Submission Instructions Authors are invited to submit regular technical papers or position papers. The position papers should present novel technologies at an early stage of development or share future vision. All submissions should describe original, previously unpublished research, not currently under review by another conference or journal. The recent emergence of networked sensors as a result of rapid advances in sensor technologies and wireless networks, have set the stage for the realization of smart environments where unobtrusive sensors, either embedded or transportable by mobile carriers, enables fine-grain capture of environmental or ambient information that provides the basis of intelligence for higher-order cognitive systems, i.e. systems with capabilities to perceive, reason, learn, and react intelligently to their environment. Such systems in turn are envisioned to have wide ranging applications from intelligent wildlife and building structure monitoring to humanistic and social endevours such as health and elderly care service provisioning. Following the success of the first SeNAmI at PDCAT 2008 in Dunedin, New Zealand, this workshop once again aims to bring together researchers from academia and industry to present and discuss recent trends and advances in sensor networks and ambient intelligence, and from such engagement foster innovations towards technology maturity of sensor-based ambient intelligence systems. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: - Cognitive wireless sensor networks - Cooperative sensor localization and target tracking - Context-aware reasoning and inference for sensor/RFID-based systems - Cross-layer design and optimization of sensor-based AmI systems - Intelligent agents for autonomous sensor network management - Sensor networking in heterogeneous wireless environments - Sensor data fusion for ubiquitous embedded computing - Security, trust, and privacy for autonomous smart spaces - Nature or bio-inspired designs for ambient sensing and intelligence - AmI architectures, platforms, applications, and services - Prototype or testbed implementation and deployment trials Manuscript submission Papers reporting original and unpublished research results and experience are solicited. To address the special requirements of both safety and non-safety applications in the vehicle domain, there is a necessity to develop new communication technologies and find special integration solutions into vehicular and transportation systems. These result in various types of vehicular communications and networks: vehicle-toinfrastructure, vehicle-to-roadside, and vehicle-to-vehicle communications. In this growing interdisciplinary field, many research challenges need to be addressed, e.g., how to characterize communication channels due to greater dynamics and higher requirements due to e.g. latency and reliability compared to conventional wireless channels, how to appropriately design medium access control (MAC) and network protocols that should essentially be scalable in performance and adaptable to environment changes due to rapid network topology changes and node density fluctuations, and how to evaluate and validate vehicular networking protocols under realistic assumptions using simulation methodologies and real-world testing. The goal of this special issue is to report on cutting-edge research achievements covering those aspects of vehicular communications and networks that are distinctively different from communication networks in general. We are seeking papers that describe high-quality, original, and unpublished contributions. Daniel Wong Although WiMAX, LTE and WiFi all are provide wireless broadband connectivity, they have been optimized for different usage models: WiFi for very high-speed local area network connectivity and WiMAX, LTE for high-speed wireless cellular connectivity. By combining WiMAX, LTE and WiFi technologies, service providers can offer better usability of the networks infrastructure and support for seamless mobility and roaming. The unique similarities between WiMAX, LTE and WiFi networks that make the proposed synergy is promising is these technologies are fully packet switching uses IP-based technologies to provide connection services to the Internet. This standards- and IP-based network approach provides compelling benefits to service providers to collaborate between these technologies. This special issue is intended to foster state-of-the-art research in the area of WiMAX, WiBro, LTE and WiFi networking and the corresponding technical advances in the design and deployment of feasible network architectures and protocols and to present novel results and solutions to solve various problems and challenges foreseen in WiMAX/LTE and WiFi interworking. Numerous attractive protocols have been proposed, which are expected to network places and devices that currently do not have the opportunity of "going online". Such environments reside at the edges of the current Internet infrastructure. For example, public and private transport vehicles, underwater, satellite and deep-space networks are potential DTN deployments of interest. Communication in the above-mentioned challenged environments is usually infrastructureless and consists mainly of mobile battery-powered devices. Moreover, mobility patterns are usually unknown, making connectivity periods between DTN-nodes intermittent and opportunistic. To achieve communication in such environments one has to deal with several performance tradeoffs, such as end-to-end delivery delay and energy consumption, or reliability and storage congestion. Since, in most cases, end-to-end connectivity does not exist (hence the difference from ad hoc networking) current Internet protocols fail permanently. Although there have already been a lot of research proposals for routing, (storage) congestion control, error control and application design for such networks, the IRTF has focused mainly on the Bundle Protocol (BP); BP is an application layer protocol that does not include the appropriate functionalities to deal with issues such as routing or storage congestion, for example. That said, DTN research and its future directions seem to lack a stable basis. For example, it is not clear yet if a "one-fits-all" protocol stack will be deployed, or if such an approach is feasible at all. In contrast, several different protocols that each would suit the needs of its specific architecture/setup would need to be able to interoperate. This workshop seeks novel ideas in the form of preliminary or work-in-progress results as well as mature research papers for Delay-/Disruption Tolerant Networks. We also encourage position papers that address and criticize the past, current and future trends of DTN research and are intended to trigger discussions on the whole spectrum of DTNs. But the Internet, as originally designed, may not have the capabilities to support the sheer number of new usage patterns and requirements. Around one billion people currently use the Internet and they will soon be joined by several billion mobile online devices. There will also be a shift from developed to developing countries. A fully pervasive anytime/anywhere and secure wireless Internet infrastructure will support and drive this trend. Therefore, the so called Future Internet (FI) needs to be able to match this growing demand and this will entail more than merely patching or upgrading the underlying network and service infrastructure. A profound change is required, leading to a range of technical, financial, society and governance challenges. There appears to be a common understanding that the FI will be at the heart of the future networked society. However, there is no agreed definition as to what a FI should cover in terms of research and non research topics. As well as being an Internet of Networks, FI is perceived of as being an Internet of Services and an Internet of Things that will integrate common objects into our lives. It is also regarding as being an Internet of Contents & Knowledge and an Internet of People. Developing the FI involves huge challenges regarding usability, reliability, mobility, scalability, interoperability, user acceptability, and trust and confidence. In addition, Internet governance, intellectual property, and education i.e. non-technical aspects - also need to be addressed. Early research work on FI focussed above all on networking issues, and on the need to support a range of innovative applications with enhanced management capabilities and a great capacity to deal with increased security issues. Alongside this, the FI is being driven by a vast set of new application requirements. This means that the FI should be approached in a holistic manner, beyond simply a "network" perspective. This special issue aims to intercept the strategies and trends related to the wireless segment of the development of the FI and to present new ideas and concepts in this area. These trends have a significant impact on the underlying network and service technologies and consequently drive research and technology requirements towards a Future Internet, hence continuing to shape future actions at a world level in a domain that has now become global. Original papers are called for on advanced research topics including, but not restricted to: - Delay Tolerant and Opportunistic Networks - Wireless Enabled Context Awareness in Networks - Network Coding as an Alternative to TCP and as Part of Network Protocols or Crosslayer Design - Support for Cognitive Radio Technology - Neighborhood and Local Resource Discovery - Cross-Layer Protocol Support - Wireless Body Area Networks and Wireless Sensor Networks - Spontaneous Information Exchange Among Mobile Devices - Infrastructure Free Communications and Self-organization - Greening of the Wireless Access - Wireless Based P2P Networks - Socio-economic and Legal Aspects of Wireless Based Services - Wireless of Future Internet Experimental Test-beds Note that the above topics should be developed in terms of a Future Internet perspective and not as isolated topics. WANETs are based on the point-to-point networking concept, in which each node acts as wireless relay/router along the path between source and destination. This provides an essentially effective networking medium in infrastructure-less environments such as rural and desert areas. The nature of WANETs leads to several advantages in comparison with that of wireless cellular technologies. The relatively low cost and complexity of installation in infrastructure-less areas, the autonomous nodes, the self- healing and configuration capabilities, and several other properties enable WANETs for networking the most kinds of environment. Nevertheless, this nature also causes several technical issues and challenges for adopting WANETs in certain environments and/or for certain applications. The resources constrains due to channel sharing, the performance of current routing protocols and QoS mechanisms, the distributed coordination of network access, and many other issues and challenges represent essential topics for future enhancement of the current ad hoc technologies. Thus, beside the optimization of current WANET solutions the development of efficient solutions for those mentioned problems represents the main challenge for the Next Generation WANETs (NG-WANETs). In addition, using WANET based communication technologies in other fields such as for deep space communication networks could open new perspectives for accelerating the development and adoption of those technologies. Furthermore, bionic- inspired mechanisms and solutions can constructively help researchers to benefit from the nature experience to improve the current solutions and to develop new methods and concepts for solving critical technical problems. Consequently, new research fields could emerge which open new dimensions and creates new perspectives of WANETs for future applications and services. This workshop represents the first step to figure out these dimensions and perspectives of NG-WANETs and aims at providing a space for debate and knowledge sharing among researchers working on state-of-the-art solutions to the current issues and challenges of WANETs. CALL FOR PAPERS Telecommunication Systems, Springer (indexed by SCIE) Special Issue on Wireless Multimedia Networks and Security Services Wireless multimedia networks (WMN) allow people to access rich multimedia content anytime, anywhere, using different access networks and different computing devices. It is anticipated that wireless multimedia services (WMS) will change the way we operate and interact with the world with the development of numerous interesting wireless multimedia applications. The new possibilities of wireless multimedia computing pose several research challenges. One of the challenges is security issue in WMN. Therefore, in WMNs, not only novel techniques, algorithms, architectures and experiences regarding multimedia applications but also security services should be considered. This special issue will focus on the challenges and issues related to wireless multimedia networks and the security services. Thus, it aims high-quality original unpublished research articles that describe state-of-the-art approaches and solutions for the wireless multimedia networks and their security. The objective of the the SensorNets 2009 School is to present a comprehensive state-of-the-art of the enabling technologies for the concept of Cyber-Physical Systems, such as Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), RFID, wireless standard protocols, etc. The lectures of this school span the basic concepts as well as the latest achievement and the future challenges in the related research areas. GOALS The goals of the SensorNets 2009 School are as follows: * Provide a basic survey of the current research works and challenges on cyber-physical and sensor-based systems. * Provide an overview of the current enabling technologies for cyber-physical and sensor-based systems. * Provide a good opportunity to meet people and distinguished scholars working on cyber-physical and sensor-based systems. * Establish contacts that may lead to research collaborations in the future. To provide a specific example that relates to Internet access (connectivity), the end-user (or a community of end-users) is a micro-operator in the sense that he/she shares his/her subscribed broadband Internet access based on some form of incentive scheme. In addition, the end-user may or may not provide other network functionality such as local mobility management, or persistent storage and forwarding services. This new role is disruptive in what concerns Internet service models, since there is no distinction between what is today known as end-user device and network device: in the future, end-user devices will actively participate as part of the network. In contrast, the Internet has been up to now mostly the means for end-users to obtain some form of network service, originally related to connectivity, person-to-person communication, or information retrieval. Such user-centric provider role is also disruptive given that the regular network boundaries of trust have to be extended in a way that should mimic social behavior: there is the need to form networks of trust in order to accommodate a robust network growth, given that the key to such growth is the willingness to cooperate. Another disruptive aspect of user-provided networking is that due to the nature of the wireless media and the way that humans move, support for intermittent connectivity as well as fast and transparent roaming between micro-operators needs to be considered. Finally, and given that user-provided networking spreads dynamically having as network elements regular end-user devices, there is the need to consider cases where information is opportunistically relayed instead of routed based on topological information. Due to the disruptive aspects mentioned, user-provided networking seem to have the potential to provide a paradigm shift in Internet communication models, given that such novel functionality allow wireless networks to operate in a completely autonomic way and also given that the end-user becomes a provider of Internet services (e.g. connectivity) based upon cooperation incentives or rewards and based upon his/her own mobility and social patterns. Services are established on the fly, and do not necessarily imply the use of multihop technology or routing. For instance, connectivity may be, in most cases, simply relayed. The workshop program will include presentations of peer-reviewed papers and a discussion panel with guests from industry and academia. We envision U-NET as a forum aiming to ignite a debate concerning technical challenges and impact (negatively or positively) that user-provided networking may have on Internet communication models. *Topics* U-NET'09 solicits high quality technical contributions within the context of user-provided networking. Events provide a natural abstraction of happenings in the real world. The concept of events has a long history in foundational sciences such as philosophy and linguistics. After first developing objects-based and entity-based approaches, computer science research is now addressing the concept of events and building many applications that consider events at least as important as objects. Consequently, we find many different solutions and approaches for modeling, detecting, and processing events. In addition, we find different applications that are based on events and make use of events. Conferences and workshops on events in computer science typically deal with the capturing, processing, and management of low-level events such as publish/ subscribe-approaches, middleware-based architectures, complex event processing, and event stream processing. Although this work is very essential for an efficient execution of the applications build on top of such approaches, the understanding of the concept of events is disconnected from the domain-level of events that the actual users of such applications have to deal with. However, considering multimedia data, its semantics is naturally closely tied to the event(s) it documents. The workshop focuses on how to detect, model, and process domain-level events and applications that make use of domain-level events in the context of multimedia data. We aim at bringing together researchers from the different fields that are interested in understanding the concept of events on domain-level. We invite original work in the areas of domain event modeling, detection of events from multimedia data, processing of events, organization of multimedia data using events as unifying mechanism, and applications of these techniques. The submissions should explicitly explain how they deal with the events of the considered domain and what kind of benefit is provided to the users by using events. Example application areas for events are multimedia-based experience sharing, lifelogs, emergency response, cultural heritage, news, surveillance, and others. The participants of the workshop will gain an insight into the current state-of-the-art of computer science research on domain-level events. They will get concrete examples of how events can be leveraged for human-centered research and how it can be detected, processed, modeled, and used for creating human- centered applications. They will also have the opportunity to discuss their approach with other researchers from the multimedia community in the hands-on part of the workshop. The emergence of low-energy and low-cost multimedia devices, such as microphones and cameras, has stimulated the development of the next generation WSN, known as Wireless Multimedia Sensor Network (WMSN). WMSNs have brought unprecedented potentials especially for applications requiring ubiquitous access to the multimedia contents, such as still images, audio and video streams. The extra sensor capacity and various requirements of multimedia objects in-network processing also pose new and unique challenges. The challenges are crucial about how to energy-efficiently query, process, transfer, and store voluminous multimedia objects since most of the multimedia sensors are operated under limited battery powers. Additionally, relatively slow advancements in battery technologies make the energy constrain the fast progress in WMSNs. This special issue will bring together those leading researchers and developers in fields of data and resource management, distributed storage techniques and energy efficiency to study the particular problems and challenges of wireless multimedia sensor networks. The purpose of the special session is therefore to foster communications between various communities including distributed database management communities, multimedia communication communities and sensor networks communities, and establish a common ground for advanced research and development in Wireless Multimedia Sensor Networks. The poster session will provide an excellent opportunity for feedback on early research results as lively discussions. Posters are solicited in all areas of mobile ad hoc networking and computing. Submission Instructions for Posters ------------------------------------ Poster descriptions of no more than 4 pages (in two-column format, ACM style - see http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html) should be submitted to the Poster Chair Manos Dramitinos by means of email to emmanouil.dramitinos(a)ens-lyon.fr. The poster should be self-contained, including all figures and references, as well as the names, affiliations and email addresses of the authors. Please indicate "PE-WASUN 2009 Poster Submission" as the subject of the email. All submissions will be acknowledged. Posters will be included in the symposium proceedings. Call for Demos -------------- PE-WASUN 2009 invites proposals for demonstrations of research tools dedicated to validate and evaluate performance of wireless networks. Academic and industrial institutions are welcome to demonstrate, for example, testbeds, simulators or formal methods engines and formalisms related to the general symposium topics available here. Submission Instructions for Demos --------------------------------- The proposal should include : * An article of at most 4 pages (in two-column format, ACM style - see http://www.acm.org/sigs/pubs/proceed/template.html), describing the tool and its benefits for performance evaluation of at least one of the aforementioned topics that will be included in the symposium proceedings. * A two-pages description text mentioning the goal of the demonstration, the space required, the setup time, network and electrical connectivity requirements as well as any other requirement. Authors may provide a reference URL if available. This description will constitute the online description of the demonstration.
