2nd IEEE International Workshop on Engineering Mobile-Based Software and Networking Applications (EMOBS 2009) IN CONJUNCTION WITH COMPSAC 2009 ================================================================================ THEME OF THE WORKSHOP The wide deployment of wireless networks and mobile technologies and significant increase of the number of mobile device users have created a very strong demand on various wireless-based mobile-based software application systems and enabling technologies. This provides many new business opportunities and challenges to wireless and networking service providers, mobile technology vendors, content providers and solution integrators. Living in a wireless world changes and enhances people‚Äôs life in many areas, such as mobile communications, wireless information sharing and learning, m-commerce, home environment, and entertainment. Today, business organizations and government agencies face with new pressure for technology update in network infrastructures and enterprise solutions to support wireless connectivity and mobility. To meet the increasing demand on various reliable wireless-based software application systems, business people are looking for innovative ideas to create diverse mobile-commerce applications and service systems, and engineers are looking for cost-effective engineering methods and efficient solutions to build high-quality wireless-based software and application systems. Meanwhile, evolution in new network architecture and protocols is likely to have major impact on mobile networks, and developments in peer-to-peer overlay and ad-hoc networks will raise different challenging research issues in mobile networking applications. Therefore, today studying and solving technical issues in engineering wireless-based software, services, networking architecture, and application systems is becoming a hot research subject for academic researchers and the industry community. ================================================================================ C A L L F O R P A P E R **** ACM SenSys 2009 **** Berkeley California November 4-6 2009 (http://sensys.acm.org/2009) The 7th ACM Conference on Embedded Networked Sensor Systems (SenSys'09) solicits innovative research papers on the systems issues of networked, embedded sensing and control. The conference brings together academic, industry, and government professionals to a premier single-track, highly selective forum on the design, implementation, and application of sensor networks. SenSys takes a broad view of embedded networked sensor systems to include any distributed systems that collectively interact with the physical world. We invite submissions covering a broad range of networked sensing systems including conventional wireless sensor networks as well as novel platforms such as mobile sensors, cellphones, and domain-specific systems. We seek technical papers describing original ideas, groundbreaking results and/or quantified system experiences. We especially encourage submissions that highlight real-world sensor network deployments, new application domains, and retrospectives on the state-of-the-art. * Topics of interest: - System and network architecture; - Operating systems; - Services for time, location, and power management; - Reliability and fault tolerance; - Protocols at all layers (physical, link, network, and above); - Programming models and languages; - Data storage, retrieval, and processing; - System security and data integrity; - Novel applications and real-world deployments; - Actuation and control; and - Privacy and social implications. Submissions will be judged on originality, significance, relevance, interest, correctness, and clarity. In this scenario, efficient allocation of the available resources and/or cooperation, and/or competition play a strategic fundamental role to increase and optimize communication performance of individual nodes or of the global network, and efficiently exploit the available frequency spectrum eventually admitting unlicensed users. This fueled a vibrant flurry of studies in cooperative communications, spectrum management (cognitive radio), and resource allocation. The investigations involve researchers and technicians from the physical, to the networking layers and above and eventually promote joint design within different layers (cross-layer design). Analysis and design of the complex interactions in future communications networks requires contributions from a variety of disciplines, which span from information theory to statistical physics, game theory, optimization, non-commutative algebras and so forth. The workshop promotes the applications of new methodologies in this field with the aim of providing the participants advanced and innovative tools able to catch the fundamental dynamics of complex interactions. It fosters the presentation of new cooperative protocols and new schemes for resource allocation, novel results in the investigation of the theoretical limits and fundamental tradeoffs between competition and cooperation. The applications can steam from any wireless scenario, from multicell networks to sensor and relay networks, cognitive radio or ad-hoc network. They will also be indexed electronically on SpringerLink. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Geosensor networks shift the traditional centralized paradigm of monitoring a geographical area from the macroscale to the microscale, by using distributed sensors to measure variables of interest (such as environmental, biological and chemical variables, seismic activity and geolocated videofeeds). Whilst having the ability to provide data with unparalleled temporal and spatial resolution, geosensor networks have pushed the frontiers of traditional GIS research into the realms of computer science, introducing issues such as data fusion, geolocated queries, energy efficient data collection and data mining and interpretation. The incorporation of mobile devices into these networks allows data acquisition to be undertaken on a spatially varying sampling resolution, introducing new research avenues such as co-operative sensing and dynamic coverage. Furthermore, geosensor networks are not only constrained to passively monitor a region, through actuators, they also have the ability to influence or modify their environment. Research in geosensor networks spans multiple fields, ranging from strategies for intelligent data acquisition to virtual reality interactions with environmental dynamics. Of particular interest are applications of geosensor networks, such as environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, early warning systems and wildlife tracking. This workshop seeks to address these issues, by bringing together leading experts in a two day forum to present novel research and exchange ideas relating to the state of the art and its future directions. Real world results are particularly welcomed, as are reports of interesting or challenging deployments. In general DTN architecture can be defined by one or more of the following characteristics: (a) sparse connectivity (i. e., end-to-end route between source and destination may not even exist); (b) long or variable delay; (c) asymmetric data rate; and (d) high error rate. Such characteristics can be results of various factors, including sever power fluctuations, wireless range, network partitioning, catastrophic disasters, or malicious attacks. Consequently, applications of DTNs are highly diverse and can be expanded to a wide variety of areas. Examples of such areas are interplanetary networks for deep space communications, sensor networks for ecological monitoring, transient networks to benefit developing communities, ad hoc networks to disseminate information in tactical or roadway environments, and disaster recovery networks to restore communications following a natural disaster. Diversity of network environments and inherent uncertainty about network conditions make design of DTNs highly challenging in terms of architecture, protocol designs, interoperability, security, management, and stability. We hope this special issue can address some of these issues and further stimulate activity in the research community. The goal of this special issue is to bring together the state-of-the- art research contributions that address the various aspects of delay/disruption tolerant communications, networks, architecture, and applications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Multicasting and broadcasting * Routing protocols for stochastic and deterministic time evolving networks * Integration with other systems and networks, such as free-space optical communications systems, MANET, VANET, C2C, Deep space, Acoustic Underwater, ad hoc, sensor/actuator networks * Models for rural connectivity and disconnected ad hoc networks * Multimedia and web searching * Hybrid DTN * Security, stability, survivability, and interoperability * Wireless DTN technologies, including RF, UWB, free-space optical, and acoustic * Network architecture and design, including link technology and node design * Applications, testbeds, and implementations * Management, configuration, QoS, and authentication * User mobility support, naming, and addressing * Protocols and overlay architecture * Delay tolerant networks and energy efficiency * Economic models and feasibility SUBMISSION PROCEDURE: Papers should be submitted as PDF format electronically to joeljr(a)ieee.org with a Subject of SI/JCM. This year, with the broadband promise already fulfilled in the city, the international workshop comes back to Barcelona in its 15th edition focused on "The Internet of the future". The Internet is shaping the twenty-first century information society. It has deeply transformed the way we learn, work and interact. All kinds of institutions, from universities to businesses, have been shaken by the wave of digital innovation. PAPER SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS ---------------------------- Authors are strongly encouraged to (but not required to) submit a 150 word abstract of their paper along with three keywords by the abstract submission deadline (March 22, 2009). Acceptable formats for the abstracts are plain text, postscript (PS) and portable document format (PDF). Submissions should not exceed 14 pages (including a 150 word abstract, all figures, tables and references) in Springer Verlag LNCS format. Acceptable formats for papers are PS and PDF. Submissions which are not in the appropriate format will be rejected without review. All papers will be reviewed for technical merit. Each accepted paper will be published in the conference proceedings, provided at least one author of the paper registers to present the paper at the conference. Full papers must break new ground, present new insight, deliver a significant research contribution and provide validated support for its results and conclusions. Successful submissions typically represent a major advance for the field of wearable computing, referencing and relating the contribution to existing research work, giving a comprehensive, detailed and understandable explanation of a device, system, study, theory or method, and support the findings with a compelling evaluation and/or validation. Each paper must be submitted as a single PDF file in IEEE Computer Science Press 8.5x11 inch two-column format (not longer than eight pages in length). Accepted regular papers will be included in the printed conference main proceedings and presented in the paper sessions. Submissions to ISWC'09 must not be under review by any other conference or publication during the ISWC review cycle, and must not be previously published or accepted for publication elsewhere. *Notes and Posters* Notes (not longer than four pages in length) and posters (not longer than two pages in length) must report new results and provide support for the results as a novel and valuable contribution to the field - just like full papers. Notes are intended for succinct work that is nonetheless in a mature state ready for inclusion in archival proceedings. Posters are intended to present very concise, yet focused and significant research results. Both notes and posters will be held to the same standard of scientific quality as full papers, albeit for a shorter presentation, and must still state how they fit with respect to related work, and provide a compelling explanation and validation. Notes and posters must be submitted as single PDF file in IEEE Computer Science Press 8.5x11-inch two-column format. Accepted notes and posters will be published in the conference main proceedings. Notes will be presented in the paper sessions of the conference, posters will be presented at the conference poster and demonstration session. *Late Breaking Results* This submission format aims at presenting very topical issues and late breaking application oriented results in all areas of wearable computing. Just like regular papers, late breaking results should present directing research, but in a very focused and compact format. Late breaking results are not understood as short papers condensed into less page space, but are intended to present pointed results at a high level of technicality. LBR submissions can gain from an "extended submission deadline" (May 18, 2009), and should be formatted in Springer LNCS single column format, not exceeding 8 pages). They will undergo a scientific reviewing process managed by the LBR program committee under the steering of the LBR chair. Accepted LBRs will be presented at the conference, and will be published in the "Advances in Wearable Computing" book of the OCG (adjunct proceedings), accompanying the conference proceedings. *Video Papers* Submissions are invited to present novel wearable computing systems, devices or just designs, or demonstrate innovative styles of interaction or usability of those systems - in a lively format: as a video. Video clips should be no longer than 8 minutes and be accompanied by a 4 page (or approx. 2000 words) written summary. Video paper submissions should be formatted in Springer LNCS single column format, and not exceeding 4 pages). Accepted video papers will be published in the "Advances in Wearable Computing" book of the OCG, accompanying the conference proceedings. The author(s) of a video are expected to present a brief introduction at the conference, while all full videos will be presented during the ISWC'09 night show - a special event in the frame of the 30th anniversary of the Ars Electronica Festival. Video papers will be published in the ISWC'09 adjunct proceedings, all video clips will be presented in the ISWC'09 Video DVD. *Reviewing Process for Papers, Notes, Posters, LBRs and Videos* ISWC'09 will adopt a double-blind process for full papers, notes and posters - as well as for late breaking results and video papers. Currently, wireless sensor networks introduce innovative and interesting application scenarios that may support a large amount of different applications including environmental monitoring, disaster prevention, building automation, object tracking, nuclear reactor control, fire detection, agriculture, healthcare, and traffic monitoring. The widespread acceptance of these new services can be improved by the definition of frameworks and architectures that have the potential to radically simplify software development for wireless sensor network based applications. The aim of these new architectures is to support flexible, scalable programming of applications based on adaptive middleware. As a consequence, WSNs require novel programming paradigms and technologies. Moreover the design of new complex systems, characterized by the interaction of different and heterogeneous resources, will allow the development of innovative applications that meet high performance goals. Hence, WSNs require contributions from many fields such as embedded systems, distributed systems, data management, system security and applications. The conference places emphasis on layers well above the traditional MAC and routing, and transport layer protocols. The aim of the conference is to create a forum in which researchers from academia and industry, practitioners, business leaders, intellectual property experts and venture capitalists may work together in order to compare and debate different innovative solutions. Indeed, in specific scenarios such as Quality-of-Service provisioning and wireless networks deeper integration and interaction among different layers is envisaged. Despite the wide-spread adoption of the general cross layer design principle, not much attention has been placed on solid, quantitative, systematic study of the system behaviour and interactions among different protocols at different layers. In fact, even if several cross-layering architectures are available in the literature, only a few works face the problem of providing frameworks for modeling cross-layering interactions and support the definition of cross-layering solutions. Quantitative cross-layer formulations and models are still needed to effectively provide guidelines on the impact of the design parameters in terms of overall system performance. Simulation based methods represent indispensable tools to provide further in-sight in this direction, given the analytical intractability of the full cross layer complex system. Indeed, specific modeling techniques need to be at the “top” of the performance evaluation process for cross-layer systems, and properly studied using formal principles, with strong support from simulation analysis to capture the subtle interactions across the layers. The special issue is aimed at gathering novel contributions in the development of models for cross- layering interactions and computational solutions. Prospective authors are invited to submit original contributions (not submitted for publication elsewhere) on the following topics: - modeling and simulation of cross-layering interactions - modeling and simulation of cross-layering processes - modeling and abstraction of cross-layer functionalities - architectural models for cross-layering signalling - sensitivity analysis, derivative approximation and simulation-based optimization - model-based cross-layer system optimization - cross layer simulation implementation issues - simulation environments for analysis of cross-layer interactions - verification of cross-layer models and simulations - cross-layer systems experimental trials and testbeds Full papers that are associated with workshop presentations are eligible to be submitted to this special issue. Wireless ad-hoc networks have also shown applications in a variety of situations, such as battlefields, disaster recovery/rescue operations, and entertainment. At the same time, wireless sensor networks are being deployed and actively researched for various forms of environmental monitoring, home automation, military, and civilian applications. Despite recent advances, and the technical accumulations from more than a decade's research effort in wireless networking, many research issues remain open in all protocol layers of wireless mesh, ad hoc and sensor networks. For example, the foreseen multi-channel, multi-radio, and multi-antenna hybrid architectures (infrastructure and ad hoc) have brought new challenges in the design of physical, MAC, and routing protocols. New application scenarios are urging researchers to address enhanced quality of service support and various security issues in the design of different protocol layers for wireless mesh, ad hoc, and sensor networks. This special issue is dedicated to recent advances in architectures and protocols of wireless mesh, ad hoc, and sensor networks. The workshop will include papers and panels dealing with latest advances and challenges facing the field. The expected audience will include networking researchers, practitioners, scientists and engineers from industry, academia and government. LCN registration will cover workshop attendance. The first three IEEE LCN Workshop on Network Measurements was very successful in bringing together a set of participants actively working on network measurements in various domains. We will continue to address network measurements from different perspectives and different domains. Topics of Interest: Network measurements are crucial for operation, diagnosis, and characterization of complex networks. Accurate characterization is important for understanding the behavior of networks and for evaluating the scalability, reliability and performance of protocols. Cross-layer designs, and overlay protocols often rely on measurements. Measurements in wired and wireless domains, and end-to-end and subnet measurements face domain specific constraints while sharing common objectives. Complex dynamics of the networks and also the difficulties in performing measurement itself pose many challenges. This workshop will provide a forum for researchers and practitioners interested in network measurements to discuss and exchange measurement related research in both wireless and wired domains, and also explore emerging fields of measurements such as on mobile devices. High quality, previously unpublished work is solicited on the topics including, but not limited to: Measurements on homogeneous and heterogeneous networks Physical layer characteristics and measurements for wireless networks Implementation and operational challenges of wireless testbeds Mobility models and traffic patterns Wired and wireless domain measurements Measurement tools, benchmarks and data sets Bandwidth, capacity and delay estimation Active and passive measurements at core nodes End-to-end and/or application-level measurements over the Internet Metrics for network characterization Measurements on Mobile devices Applications and protocols relying on network measurements Paper length should not exceed 6 pages. Papers should be submitted electronically in PDF format via EDAS. Papers will go through a thorough review process. We aim to do this through real-life experience in the Arctic Circle region. The Padjelanta national park in Laponia, Sweden is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the home of the Saami population of semi-nomadic reindeer herders. Due to the lack of infrastructure in this area, a DTN-based networking system for the area has been developed by the SNC and N4C projects. During the summer of 2009, the fourth summer of deployment and testing for this system will take place, which makes this a unique opportunity to experience a real deployment of a DTN system. The workshop will start with a 5 day field trip into the mountain regions where the DTN system is deployed. During this time, participants will be given the opportunity to hike along the trails in the mountains and visit the Saami settlements to meet the local population and users of the system. Not only will this give a better idea of both the technical and user requirements of such a system, but it will also give many opportunities for informal research discussions between the participants. Participants that have their own software for scenarios like this will also, to as great an extent as possible, be encouraged to test and demonstrate it within this environment. (We are currently planning the mountain-based part of the workshop together with the local population, and some details are subject to change.) Upon reaching the end of the hike, there will be two days of paper presentations and demos in a more traditional conference venue. Focus will still be on informal research discussions, with the hope that the field experience will give participants the ability to discuss the topics in a new light. Participants should submit 2-page position papers about ideas and visions about the topics of the workshop or demo proposals to be shown during the workshop. Visionary and thought-provoking papers that are likely to generate much discussion during the workshop are especially solicited. The aim of the workshop is to maintain an informal environment, where new research ideas can be discussed and developed. Topics for the workshop include, but are not limited to: * Testbeds for large-scale sustainable testing of DTN systems * Real deployments of networks in extreme environments * Business and service models for networks in rural, remote, and other challenging environments * User experience research * Delay tolerant networking * Low-power and intermittent-power protocols * Mechanisms for emergency and urgent communications * Networked applications and services Due to logistics and the need to conduct the workshop in harmony with the local population and the environment, the number of participants will be limited. This workshop concentrates on such network layer problems as data communication (routing, QoS-routing, geocasting, multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and topology control (neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor elimination, etc.). The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global information. Localized algorithms are distributed approaches where simple local node behavior achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an arbitrary number of nodes. The objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research results on various aspects of localized algorithms and protocols in this rapidly growing area of ad hoc and sensor networks. Significant efforts have been devoted to revise many aspects of current network design including network architecture, network protocols, security and privacy, and service abstractions. The development of experimental network testbeds (e.g. PlanetLab, Emulab, GENI, etc.) has allowed researchers to evaluate and verify innovative designs through realistic experiments at a global scale. The design of the next-generation Internet also draws a great deal of interest from the computer architecture research community. The introduction of virtualization and programmability in router systems requires high performance embedded processing elements. Network processors, FPGAs, and multi-core processors play important roles in modern routers and switches. The expanding functionality of the next-generation Internet and the increasing complexity of its router systems pose a novel challenge for performance evaluation. Researchers and developers involved in designing and implementing new network architectures, router systems, and network applications need the ability to thoroughly evaluate and quantitatively compare the performance of these systems. Currently, there are no established evaluation methodologies, benchmark network topologies, or application workloads to guide the performance evaluation process in next-generation networks. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners from the networking, computer architecture, and performance evaluation communities to describe, discuss, and advance the state of the art in performance evaluation of next-generation networks. The workshop solicits papers that cover analytic, simulation-based, and measurement-based performance evaluation topics in this area. This requires seamless access to media, information sharing and communication through heterogeneous systems, which are distributed and may be deeply embedded in the physical environment. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to deepen our understanding of human behaviour in context and its impact on technological issues relevant to ubiquitous environments. Research in this area is rapidly gaining importance and has become an essential part of pervasive and mobile computing systems. This special issue solicits original papers that contribute to our understanding of human behaviour and its impact on the design, development and use of applications in mobile and ubiquitous settings. Submissions can focus on theoretical and applied research in topics including, but not limited to: * Data capture and knowledge discovery for user modelling in ubiquitous environments * Machine learning techniques applied to socially-aware ubiquitous systems * Experience design in socially-aware ubiquitous systems * Human-computer interaction issues in ubiquitous environments * Detecting and using patterns of human behaviour in ubiquitous computing * Modelling and recognition of user activity, mobility and context * Social computing applications in human-centred ubiquitous environments * Pervasive user-generated content: applications, systems and practices * Applications in mobile and ubiquitous environments for learning, business, social computing, travelling, arts, entertainment, gaming, healthcare and virtual worlds. Submissions should be of high standard for an international, archival research journal, and will be reviewed according to the strict standards of the PMC journal. Papers should not have been submitted or published elsewhere but could be extended or refined versions of conference papers with significant new, original material. Extended versions or refined versions of conference papers are expected to differ from the conference version by at least 30% across all sections - authors are requested to submit their published conference articles and a summary document explaining the enhancements made in the journal version. Additionally, relatively slow advancements in battery technologies make the energy constrain the fast progress in WMSNs. This special issue will bring together those leading researchers and developers in fields of data and resource management, distributed storage techniques and energy efficiency to study the particular problems and challenges of wireless multimedia sensor networks. Extended Submission Deadline: 03/02/2009 !!! http://www7.informatik.uni-erlangen.de/~dressler/evics2009/ held in conjunction with IEEE WoWMoM 2009 June 19, 2009, Kos, Greece Aims and Scope -------------- The establishment of network connections among vehicles and between vehicles and an existing network infrastructure is one of the most challenging research fields in the networking domain. Vehicles can be seen as a mobile communication infrastructure with strong dynamics w.r.t. network topology and changing communication channel conditions. The applications are manifold ranging from comfort services, e.g. traffic information systems, to safety applications, e.g. emergency warnings. Until now, the development of protocols was primarily inspired by existing Internet solutions and the advances in mobile ad hoc networking. However, the specific characteristics of vehicular networks may require quite different communication paradigms. For example, the nodes usually do not have severe power and form factor constraints, and they might be always on. On the other hand, wireless connections may not be stable for a longer time period and the network density is expected to vary from spa! rse to very dense networks. This workshop aims to provide a discussion forum for novel solutions and services looking into V2V and V2I communication issues focusing on environmental aspects such as optimized CO2 emission, and road traffic shaping, i.e. optimized usage of available routes for all vehicles. Furthermore, con-cerning the drivers or users of vehicles, the service aspect is especially challenging in public trans-portation and for fleet management. The workshop will highlight the latest achievements in the research area of vehicular communication, with the goal of bringing together the different research communities. We especially target protocols and solutions besides simple "802.11+MANET" based solutions and explicitly encourage submission of scientifically sound experimental work. Authors are required to center their work around the environmental and social impacts of IVC and clearly state in the abstract how one or more of these issues are addressed in the paper. We are looking for both technical and position papers presenting new applications for IVC that we have not seen so far, and new ways to exploit existing communication techniques for more efficient IVC. Extended Submission Deadline: 03/02/2009 !!! http://www7.informatik.uni-erlangen.de/~dressler/evics2009/ held in conjunction with IEEE WoWMoM 2009 June 19, 2009, Kos, Greece Aims and Scope -------------- The establishment of network connections among vehicles and between vehicles and an existing network infrastructure is one of the most challenging research fields in the networking domain. Vehicles can be seen as a mobile communication infrastructure with strong dynamics w.r.t. network topology and changing communication channel conditions. The applications are manifold ranging from comfort services, e.g. traffic information systems, to safety applications, e.g. emergency warnings. Until now, the development of protocols was primarily inspired by existing Internet solutions and the advances in mobile ad hoc networking. However, the specific characteristics of vehicular networks may require quite different communication paradigms. For example, the nodes usually do not have severe power and form factor constraints, and they might be always on. On the other hand, wireless connections may not be stable for a longer time period and the network density is expected to vary from sparse to very dense networks. This workshop aims to provide a discussion forum for novel solutions and services looking into V2V and V2I communication issues focusing on environmental aspects such as optimized CO2 emission, and road traffic shaping, i.e. optimized usage of available routes for all vehicles. Furthermore, con-cerning the drivers or users of vehicles, the service aspect is especially challenging in public trans-portation and for fleet management. The workshop will highlight the latest achievements in the research area of vehicular communication, with the goal of bringing together the different research communities. We especially target protocols and solutions besides simple "802.11+MANET" based solutions and explicitly encourage submission of scientifically sound experimental work. Authors are required to center their work around the environmental and social impacts of IVC and clearly state in the abstract how one or more of these issues are addressed in the paper. We are looking for both technical and position papers presenting new applications for IVC that we have not seen so far, and new ways to exploit existing communication techniques for more efficient IVC. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication * Inter-Vehicular Communication (IVC) and Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET) * Exploiting IVC and intra-vehicular networks for improved safety * IVC for reduced CO2 emission and road traffic shaping * IVC algorithms, protocols, and services (MAC, routing, data dissemination, Internet-connectivity) * IVC related security, safety, and privacy issues and conflicts * Mobility modeling and simulation environments Submission Guidelines --------------------- Submission of both technical papers and position papers is encouraged. Yet, issues like efficient mobility management and optimization, locator-identifier split, multi-homing, security, wireless access and related operational/deployment concerns are still in their early stages of development. Moreover, the Internet architecture, its end-to-end principles, and business models will require rethinking due to the massive penetration of mobility into the Internet. For instance, an appropriate system that allows communicating with a mobile host requires addressing several fundamental issues with the Internet architecture, such as ability to locate the mobile host/service, preserving ongoing communications upon changes of locations, as well as efficient and secure handover management. As another example, the emerging wireless technologies may pose additional challenges to the Internet architecture since they introduce design principles different from the original Internet. MobiArch 2009 welcomes submissions, from both researchers and practitioners, in exploration of recent advances in architectures, protocols, and experiences with emerging technologies on various mobility issues over the Internet, with an emphasis on wireless infrastructures and mobility patterns for mobility support, new mobility protocols, service discovery, routing and location management, mobile network performance evaluation and modelling, multi-homing, security, architectural impacts and deployment considerations. Furthermore, the potential of usability of mobility services for connecting people and devices in developing regions of the world into the Internet infrastructure will be also explored. Topics of MobiArch 2009 cover all aspects of architectural issues and system support for mobility in the Internet, including but not limited to: * Impacts of new wireless technologies/services, networking technologies, and mobility patterns on the Internet architecture * Architectures and protocols for mobility support in the Internet, ranging from approaches in link, network, transport to session/application layers and cross-layer design * Location management, routing, locator/identifier split, multi-homing and load sharing issues * Security and privacy issues in mobility networks and impacts to Internet architecture * Architectures and mechanisms for wireless/mobile connectivity in extreme environments (e.g., remote areas, developing countries) * Performance issues with mobility in the Internet * QoS and middlebox issues in mobility networks and impacts to Internet architecture * Economic and deployment issues of mobility solutions (infrastructure and devices) * Impact of social aspects on mobility architectures, mobile application and protocol design * Technologies for mobile wireless access and interactions Submissions must present original results. At one end of the performance spectrum, the Internet protocols provide communication facilities for extremely-high-speed special-use networks. At the other end of the performance spectrum, the Internet contains very low-power and low-bandwidth networks that cater to infrequent, bursty communication. Enabling efficient and high- performance end-to-end communication across such a diverse internetwork is a difficult problem, which is not solved by current transport layer protocols. The need to support an application base that grows more and more dissimilar adds additional challenges. The 7th International Workshop on Protocols for Future, Large-Scale & Diverse Network Transports (PFLDNeT)brings together researchers and practitioners from all continents to exchange their ideas and experiences in the area of transport layer issues for modern communication networks. The workshop provides theorists, experimentalists and technologists with a focused, highly interactive opportunity to present, discuss and exchange experience on leading research, development and future directions in transport and application protocols for networks that are increasingly growing in size, heterogeneity and dynamicity of interaction. PFLDNeT 2009 solicits papers that further the research on end-to-end communication protocols for todays and tomorrows Internet in all its diversity along the continuum from specialized grid networks, optical transports, wireless connections, to lossy and low-power networks. A specific focus of the workshop lies on transport protocols for the efficient end-to-end transfer of data for a diverse set of applications and application-layer protocols. Now approaching its seventh instantiation, the PFLDneT workshop has broadened its focus over the years from protocols targeted at specific fast, long-distance networks (the original expansion of the PFLDneT acronym) into a venue where all kinds of new ideas relating to end-to-end transport protocols for diverse network scenarios are being discussed first. The previous International Workshops on Protocols for Fast, Long- Distance Networks held at CERN (2003), Argonne (2004), Lyon (2005), Nara (2006), Marina del Rey (2007) and Manchester (2008) were very successful in bringing together many researchers from all over the world including North America, Europe and Asia who are working on these problems. PFLDNeT 2009 will continue this tradition, and provide a perfect forum for researchers in this area to exchange ideas and experience. From providing rich connectivity to realizing sensory and actuary applications, WLNs serve a wide range of applications. In its 9th year, the WLN workshop would like to focus on how such networks can be made to be energy efficient and cost effective, while maintaining high levels of service delivery quality. It is hence our aim to focus on both design and implementation aspects in networks that are sustainable, or that can be utilized to in making sustainable system.
