================================================================== Our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this mail =================================================================== 9th IEEE International Workshop on Wireless Local Networks 2009 http://www.wln09.prism.uvsq.fr/ held in conjunction with The 34th IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN) 20-23 October, 2009, Zurich, Switzerland "Global Sustainability through Local Functionalities" || Scope || Wireless Local Networks (WLNs) play a major role in today’s world. From providing rich connectivity to realizing sensory and actuary applications, WLNs serve a wide range of applications. In its 9th year, the WLN workshop would like to focus on how such networks can be made to be energy efficient and cost effective, while maintaining high levels of service delivery quality. It is hence our aim to focus on both design and implementation aspects in networks that are sustainable, or that can be utilized to in making sustainable system. At the same time, we will maintain our open call in topics relevant to WLNs. With this spirit, we are soliciting works describing both theoretical and practical research endeavors. We also encourage visionary and experimental descriptions. Apologies if you received multiple copies of this mail. ----------------------------------- Call For Submissions A PhD Forum on Mobile Systems, Applications, and Services June 22, 2009 Krakow, Poland http://prisms.cs.umass.edu/~sorber/mobisysforum09/ Co-located with ACM MobiSys 2009 ----------------------------------- Overview: The PhD Forum provides a friendly and supportive environment for doctoral students to present and discuss their dissertation research both with their peers and with a panel of experienced researchers from academia and industry. In addition to providing feedback and advice, this forum will provide an opportunity for students to network as well as to practice presenting their research clearly and concisely. This forum is best suited to students who are far enough into their PhD to have a concrete dissertation proposal outlining the key challenges they plan to solve as well as the strategies and methodologies that are applicable. Furthermore, participants should not plan to finish their dissertation within 6 months of the forum, as that would leave little time to include advice and suggestions into their work. Format: This year's PhD Forum will be a one-day event consisting of short student presentations, discussion, and a roundtable discussion. Each participant will have time allotted for a short presentation as well as an in-depth and constructive discussion led by the panel. In order to allow adequate time for each presentation, we will limit the number of participants to no more than 15 presenters. The event will conclude with a roundtable discussion, in which panelists will have another opportunity to provide general suggestions and advice to the entire group. Submission: Submissions should consist of the following 1. A summary of the student's dissertation research (up to 3 pages) including a brief discussion of motivation, challenges, related work, and initial results. Applicants should clearly identify their contributions to the field of mobile systems. Also, a clear delineation of prior work and proposed work, will help the panel provide more useful suggestions. 2. A short biographical sketch (1 page max) describing the applicants affiliations and research activities. This should include the date that the student expects to complete his/her dissertation. The program committee will evaluate each paper using metrics that are appropriate for the topic area. For example, a systems or experimental paper in the protocol area will be evaluated based on the innovations in the protocol design, practical implementation, and realistic evaluation, whereas a more theoretical paper may be evaluated mostly based on innovation within the algorithm design. At the same time, the evaluation of wireless and mobile networking technologies is challenging because of the significant impact that the physical environment has on performance. For this reason, all papers must carefully describe and justify the evaluation methodology that is used and identify its strengths and weaknesses. Wireless and mobile networks are being used in a wide variety of application contexts, such as sensor networks, pervasive computing, disruption tolerant networking, and vehicular networks. Papers that describe research and experimentation in such environments are encouraged, but the focus of such papers should be on addressing challenges associated with mobility and wireless networking. The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. CHALLENGES PAPERS: The conference strongly encourages the submission of short papers in the field of mobile computing and wireless networking that present revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing assumptions prevalent among the research community. These "challenges papers" should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting avenues and/or influence the direction of future research. Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Challenges papers will be reviewed by the MobiCom program committee and will be part of the technical program and published in ACM MobiCom proceedings. They should be submitted using the same submission procedure adopted for the full papers. The title of these papers must start with the word "Challenges:" i.e., "Challenges: Rest of the Title." SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should prepare a PDF or PostScript version of their full paper. Papers must be no longer than 12 pages (8 pages for "Challenges" papers), in font size no smaller than 10 points, and must fit properly on US "Letter"-sized paper (8.5x11 inches) with 1-inch margins. These nodes are deeply embedded into the physical surroundings, and gather and process information such as temperature, humidity, light characteristics, seismic activities or images and sound samples from the physical world. Networked systems of such sensors are expected to be used in a variety of applications including habitat monitoring, precision agriculture, disaster recovery operations, healthcare and supply chain management. Real-world sensor network deployments and prototypic implementations are still not commonplace. However, experiences gained in such deployments are crucial for the sensor network research community. These results are needed to refine assumptions made when designing hardware, software, protocols and mechanisms for sensor networks. This workshop aims at bringing together researchers from academia and industry to showcase their work and obtain feedback. We expect the workshop to act as a forum for the sensor network research community to discuss open issues, novel solutions and the future development of wireless sensor networks in general. We encourage contributions describing innovative work in the realm of wireless sensor networks. Digital Ecosystems are empowered by the cyber engineering and human space computing. Cyber engineering studies the digital horizon in our ecosystems, also known as Cloud computing. It encompasses the semantic web, ontologies, cyber security, privacy, trust and risk management, social networks, web 2.0, 3.0, convergence technologies, web services and grid technologies. Human space computing is about the study of the technology (Bluetooth, WiFi, IRDA, RFID, GSM, GPRS, 3G Digital Pens, PDAs, Mobile Phones, VoIP, Video, Voice, Data, other devices) for improvement of our human lives, not just organizations, businesses or government. It studies the world we live in, and personal space computing, our space, between the digital skyline and our ecosystems. Our apology if you receive multiple posts of this announcement. ====================================================================== JSAC CALL FOR PAPERS Special Issue on Mission Critical Networking Mission-Critical Networking (MCN) refers to networking for application domains where life or livelihood may be at risk. Typical application domains for MCN include critical infrastructure protection and operation, emergency and crisis intervention, healthcare services, and military operations. Such networking is essential for safety, security and economic vitality in our complex world characterized by uncertainty, heterogeneity, emergent behaviors, and the need for reliable and timely response. MCN should comprise networking technology, infrastructures and services that may alleviate the risk and directly enable and enhance connectivity for mission-critical information exchange among diverse, widely-dispersed, mobile users. A primary challenge to MCN is to deploy and dynamically configure and evolve communication networks that are dependable, autonomic, secure, adaptive, and rapidly deployable to support critical missions and their priorities. In order to operate effectively, the deployed networks should support services such as location determination of both authorized and unauthorized entities, quality-of-service aware audio and video communication, emergency calling and alerting, and in-situ and remote sensing and control in a secure and dependable manner. In addition, efficient operation of such networks that typically include numerous resource-constrained components may benefit from cross-layer optimization, cognition, resource engineering, on-demand federation, and service-oriented architecture. Also important is the integration of MCN with the Internet to reduce cost of deployment and maintenance and to enhance reachability and ubiquity. This special issue of the Journal on Selected Areas in Communications solicits high quality technical contributions in mission-critical networking including, but not limited to: - Architecture and design of MCN and next-generation emergency calling and alerting - Rapidly and dynamically deployable services and networks - Evolving "elastic" networking with decentralized and peer-to-peer resource management and allocation - Federation and policy management for heterogeneous networks and protocols - Trust, security, dependability, privacy, QoS and performance awareness and management for MCN - Sensor and actuator networks for critical information gathering, tracking and real-time control - MCN traffic and mobility analysis - Formal methodology for cognitive, autonomic, and context-aware protocols and network management - Spectrum management and access - Testbeds, benchmarks, performance and experimental studies ** Paper Submission Manuscripts should describe original, previously unpublished work, not currently under review. Now, that some of the fundamental issues and challenges have been clearly assessed, the focus is partially shifting to new issues, which include application scenarios (road safety, disaster recovery, sensors and actuators, etc.), autonomous organization and operation, optimization and control, and service creation and support. Moreover, new and exciting challenges are posed by closely related networks such as wireless mesh networks, sensor networks, and vehicular networks. Med-Hoc-Net is a major annual international workshop, aiming to serve as a platform for researchers and visionaries from academia, research labs, and industry. Following Sicily (2006), Corfu (2007), and Palma de Mallorca (2008), Med-Hoc-Net 2009 will take place in Haifa (Israel). Submitted papers should clearly indicate their type. Papers must not exceed the given number of pages for the respective paper type: Research Papers (max. 12 pages): a research paper describes new results that advance the state-of-the-art in basic or applied research. Industry Papers (max. 8 pages): an industry paper describes the design, the experience (in building, deploying and running), or the performance of an industry system. Commonly, the majority of authors on the paper are from industry. Product marketing material will not be accepted as papers. Demo Papers (max. 4 pages): a demo paper reports on an existing research prototype by clearly identifying the original contributions and ideas demonstrated. The authors are expected to prepare a poster and perform a live software demonstration on their own laptop during an exhibit-style conference reception. MobiCASE, the International Conference on Mobile Computing, Applications, and Services, will allow scientists and practitioners from both academia and industry to highlight their best work in mobile wireless applications and service provisioning. MobiCASE is specifically focused on application-layer research and development in mobile computing: applications, application management, and application services. We seek novel submissions in mobile applications and systems research in domain topics above the OSI transport layer with an emphasis on complete end-to-end systems and their components. Selected papers will be considered for publication in the ACM/Springer Mobile Networks and Applications (MONET) journal. A common theme is the requirement to adopt an all encompassing approach taking into account requirements and views from a number of angles: networking protocols, socio-economics, services, security, etc. The ubiquity of mobile devices and proliferation of wireless networks will allow everyone permanent access to the Internet at all times and all places. Trillions of heterogeneous network enabled devices such as sensors and actuators located in open space or attached to existing objects, RFID enabled items, robots and generally many heterogeneous devices with communication and computational capabilities are integrated into the fabric of the Internet, providing an accurate reflection of the real world, delivering fine-grained information and enabling almost real time interaction between the virtual world and real world. The increased computational power of these devices has the potential to empower people to generate their own applications for innovative social and cognitive activities in any situation and anywhere. This wireless connection is not limited to user devices, almost any artefact from clothing to buildings can be connected and collaborate as a network enabled device. Furthermore new sensor technologies and wireless sensor networks provide environmental intelligence and the capability to sense, reason and actuate. This leads to the exciting vision of the interconnection of artefacts embedded in our real environment, forming a society of "intelligent things" and "smart spaces" and thus making the real world "clickable". The goal of the workshop is to bring together researchers and practitioners addressing the Future Internet and in particular the real world aspect of it. The workshop should serve as a place to exchange ideas between different national and regional initiatives as well as research projects and researchers. The main topics of interest include the following: * Management, scalability and heterogeneity of devices and users: how can a vast number of devices be managed and networked efficiently? Will current naming and addressing be efficient and sufficient? How does IP scale to low complexity (e.g. with the use of 6LoWPAN)? How can we integrate more data centric services on the Internet (in contrast to address centric mechanism)? In particular wireless sensor and actuator networks will be unreliable, dropping off and connecting fluently to the Internet - can we design efficient Plug and Play (PnP) mechanisms to manage these edge networks? * Networked knowledge and context - What are the means to describe this information? Call for Papers Journal of Communications (JCM) Special Issue on Multimedia Communications, Networking and Applications http://www.academypublisher.com/jcm/si/jcmsi_mcna.html With the advancement of multimedia signal processing/compression technology and the wide deployment of wired/wireless networks, there is an increasing demand for multimedia communication services. However, advanced multimedia processing often attempts to optimize the coding efficiency and introduces higher dependency between the processed data, resulting in a fundamental challenge to robust data communication. On the other hand, modern communication networks often exploit multi-dimensional diversity, such as user, frequency, and location, and finer granularity of resources, such as power and spectrum, for multimedia communications that have seldom been explored in multimedia signal processing. Therefore, we are facing unprecedented challenges in multimedia communications, networking, and applications. Many critical issues need to be addressed to improve the end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) for multimedia networks, for example, how to deploy the cross-layer design methodology that leverages the characteristics of multimedia signal processing and communication networks, how to optimize the QoS subject to available resources, and, in particular, how to allocate resources to individual nodes and sources when a network involves multiple nodes and sources of multimedia. Whilst having the ability to provide data with unparalleled temporal and spatial resolution, geosensor networks have pushed the frontiers of traditional GIS research into the realms of computer science, introducing issues such as data fusion, geolocated queries, energy efficient data collection and data mining and interpretation. The incorporation of mobile devices into these networks allows data acquisition to be undertaken on a spatially varying sampling resolution, introducing new research avenues such as co-operative sensing and dynamic coverage. Furthermore, geosensor networks are not only constrained to passively monitor a region, through actuators, they also have the ability to influence or modify their environment. Research in geosensor networks spans multiple fields, ranging from strategies for intelligent data acquisition to virtual reality interactions with environmental dynamics. Of particular interest are applications of geosensor networks, such as environmental monitoring, precision agriculture, early warning systems and wildlife tracking. This workshop seeks to address these issues, by bringing together leading experts in a two day forum to present novel research and exchange ideas relating to the state of the art and its future directions. Real world results are particularly welcomed, as are reports of interesting or challenging deployments. Workshop on Sensor Networks for Earth and Space Science Applications (ESSA 2009) Held in conjunction with ACM/IEEE International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks (IPSN) San Francisco, CA, USA April 16, 2009 Wireless sensor networks and their applications have grown steadily during the past decade as a result of the convergence of various technologies spanning wireless, data processing algorithms, computing hardware, storage, and sensor capabilities. The pervasive nature of static and mobile sensors scattered throughout the environment enables multi-resolution capture of environmental or ambient information that serve as the basis of intelligence for knowledge inference and decision-making. Information processing for sensor networks enables new capabilities to operate autonomously and learn, perceive, reason, and react intelligently to their environments. Large scale sensor networks are now being used in a number of Earth and Space Science applications, including large-area terrestrial systems for geologic monitoring, volcano/plume monitoring, seismic (earthquake) monitoring, large-scale ocean monitoring for tsunamis, storm surges, plumes, algae blooms, and weather forecasting systems comprised of aerial and ground/coastal nodes. Such Earth and Space sensor networks are now evolving from "passive observation and reporting systems" to "active and reactive systems" that dynamically evolve in response to complex and rapid spatio-temporal events. This workshop is a forum for scientists and researchers to present new ideas and papers on sensor networks applications in the areas of Earth and Space Science. Papers on all aspects of Earth and Space Applications can be submitted to this workshop. We expect this workshop to have invited papers as well as contributed papers. CALL FOR PAPERS EJSE Electronic Journal of Structural Engineering Special Issue on Sensor Network for Building Monitoring: From Theory to Real Application http://www.ejse.org EJSE invites contributions on the above subject to the first issue of an ongoing series of special ssues in building monitoring using sensor networks. Monitoring and automatic control of building environment is a crucial application of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). The investigation of efficient sensor network design that minimizes energy dissipation in a battery of the sensor node with limited battery power is a vital consideration for sensor network lifetime. Therefore careful scheduling of battery power in sensor networks has become a critical issue in network design. Recent technological developments have permitted miniaturization and power efficiency of sensors, and integration of data into applications for building monitoring and computer interaction. Sensor networks illustrate an exceptional improvement over traditional sensors. However, there are still many challenges to be met before we see more widespread use of WSN in building monitoring applications. The principal objective of this special issue is to assemble papers on recent advances made in the area of sensor networks for monitoring buildings. CALL FOR PAPERS PFLDNet 2009 The 7th International Workshop on Protocols for Future, Large-Scale and Diverse Network Transports (PFLDNeT) The University of Tokyo, Japan May 21-22, 2009 Web page: http://www.hpcc.jp/pfldnet2009 Scope The Internet continues to evolve along several dimensions, allowing more and more end systems to communicate in increasingly diverse ways. At one end of the performance spectrum, the Internet protocols provide communication facilities for extremely-high-speed special-use networks. At the other end of the performance spectrum, the Internet contains very low-power and low-bandwidth networks that cater to infrequent, bursty communication. Enabling efficient and high- performance end-to-end communication across such a diverse internetwork is a difficult problem, which is not solved by current transport layer protocols. The need to support an application base that grows more and more dissimilar adds additional challenges. The 7th International Workshop on Protocols for Future, Large-Scale & Diverse Network Transports (PFLDNeT)brings together researchers and practitioners from all continents to exchange their ideas and experiences in the area of transport layer issues for modern communication networks. The workshop provides theorists, experimentalists and technologists with a focused, highly interactive opportunity to present, discuss and exchange experience on leading research, development and future directions in transport and application protocols for networks that are increasingly growing in size, heterogeneity and dynamicity of interaction. PFLDNeT 2009 solicits papers that further the research on end-to-end communication protocols for todays and tomorrows Internet in all its diversity along the continuum from specialized grid networks, optical transports, wireless connections, to lossy and low-power networks. A specific focus of the workshop lies on transport protocols for the efficient end-to-end transfer of data for a diverse set of applications and application-layer protocols. Now approaching its seventh instantiation, the PFLDneT workshop has broadened its focus over the years from protocols targeted at specific fast, long-distance networks (the original expansion of the PFLDneT acronym) into a venue where all kinds of new ideas relating to end-to-end transport protocols for diverse network scenarios are being discussed first. In the absence of manual annotation specifying the content of the media (in the form of captions or tags), most current content management software only allow simple browsing and navigation options; which severely limits the search and other advanced functionality. This is complicated by the available types of media such as images, video, music, speech, text, and graphics, and the relationship and interactions among them. In addition to personal collections located at home PCs and laptops, the wide spread popularity of media and social networking sites such as Flickr, YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, Easyshare Gallery has enabled users to share and browse images and videos. However, due to the huge magnitude and variety of media content, it is increasing difficult for users and consumers to easily navigate, search, compose, and share their content and memories. When we consider the multimedia information available on public web sites, we will be confronting with a big scalability issue with many existing techniques and algorithms. Solutions that address the broad spectrum of personal and social multimedia applications are needed. The goal of this workshop is to provide a technical forum for researchers from academy and industry to discuss the advances and challenges of information processing, analysis, and retrieval for multimedia applications in personal and social domains. We propose to explore emerging areas of research such as cross-media and cross-domain information analysis and extraction, which will enhance current capability of information management applications and enrich the overall multimedia experience. Another area is to leverage rich metadata and contextual information associated with the media content. These include GPS, date/time, captions/tags, camera settings, face and other biometric information. The advances in user interface technologies incorporating speech and gesture recognition will also play an important role in enabling more user friendly and easy to use multimedia applications in the consumer domain. We welcome papers that address fundamental research issues in this challenging area, with emphasis on personal and social applications. We also encourage papers to report on system level research related to multimedia and cross-media analysis, processing, and retrieval. A number of invited papers will also be solicited. The advent of digital technologies has made the creation and manipulation of multimedia content simpler. It offers higher quality and a lot more convenience to consumers. For example, it allows one to make perfect copies. Together with the growing volumes of digital data, increasingly the Internet is used for the distribution of the digital data. The ease with which digital goods can be copied and redistributed makes the Internet well suited for unauthorized copying, modification and redistribution. The rapid adoption of new technologies such as high-bandwidth connections, wireless networks, and peer-to-peer networks is accelerating this process. Multimedia security and content protection technologies and systems are intended to protect the intellectual property rights of content owners in scenarios in which the participants have conflicting goals and are not fully trusted. However, developing secure multimedia applications and solutions in a distributed environment with competing technologies and emerging standards is an enormous challenge. This workshop intends to provide a forum that researchers, developers and practitioners from multimedia security communities come together to share the vision of multimedia security and content protection in this rapidly growing digital world. On the one hand, the rapid increase of online multimedia data brings us new challenges to multimedia content analysis and multimedia retrieval especially in terms of scalability. In particular, the increasing architectural complexity and application sophistication make it essential to have an inter-disciplinary research between algorithms and hardware designs. The workshop is to bridge the gap between algorithms and architecture designs for the development of future computer and multimedia systems. In particular, multi-core processors are now prevalent everywhere from desktops and graphics processors to laptops and embedded systems. Technology predictions indicate that this trend will continue and that there will be increasing numbers of cores (homogenous or heterogeneous) in future systems. It is clear that multimedia systems of tomorrow will be (and must be) implemented on platforms with multiple cores. While the challenges of designing multi-core systems in hardware are many, writing efficient parallel applications that utilize the computing capability of many processing cores may reveal to be even more challenging. Existing serial algorithms will need to be redesigned -- the best sequential algorithm is not necessarily the best parallel algorithm. Signal processing algorithm designers must understand the nuances of a multi-core computing engine. Only then can the tremendous computing power that such platforms provide be harnessed efficiently. We are organizing a poster session in the workshop. We would like to attract both tutorial-like and non-tutorial, research-oriented poster papers on (1) novel multimedia applications that can be enabled by platform with multiple cores, and (2) design examples of multimedia signal processing on platforms with multiple cores that demonstrate the techniques or algorithm changes for efficient implementations. *****Submission Procedure***** Prospective authors should submit 2-page white papers to the workshop chairs according to the following timetable. The white paper should summarize the key takeaway messages ("What can the attendee learn from the poster?"), the motivation ("Why should a attendee care the poster?"), the significance of the topic ("Why is this topic important?"), a brief history ("What are the related work and authors' prior publications in this topic?"), and the outline of the content ("What do you plan to explain the poster?"). The authors should properly answer all the questions above so that the white paper can be reviewed efficiently. After answering the above questions, the authors can selectively describe some details within the rest of page limit. The white paper should be no more than 2 pages in the IEEE single-space double-column format. Please note that a special issue on "Signal Processing on Platforms with Multiple Cores" that focuses on design and applications is planned for IEEE Signal Processing Magazine (http://apollo.ee.columbia.edu/spm/?i=cfp/Mar10). CALL FOR PAPERS S-CUBE 2009 The first international conference on Sensor Systems and Software September 7-9, 2009 - Pisa, Italy http:// www.s-cubeconference.org S-CUBE - the First Conference on wireless Sensor network (WSN) Systems and Software - provides an ideal venue to address the research challenges facing system development and software support for wireless sensor networks based systems that have the potential to impact society in many ways. Currently, wireless sensor networks introduce innovative and interesting application scenarios that may support a large amount of different applications including environmental monitoring, disaster prevention, building automation, object tracking, nuclear reactor control, fire detection, agriculture, healthcare, and traffic monitoring. The widespread acceptance of these new services can be improved by the definition of frameworks and architectures that have the potential to radically simplify software development for wireless sensor network based applications. The aim of these new architectures is to support flexible, scalable programming of applications based on adaptive middleware. As a consequence, WSNs require novel programming paradigms and technologies. Moreover the design of new complex systems, characterized by the interaction of different and heterogeneous resources, will allow the development of innovative applications that meet high performance goals. Hence, WSNs require contributions from many fields such as embedded systems, distributed systems, data management, system security and applications. The conference places emphasis on layers well above the traditional MAC and routing, and transport layer protocols. The aim of the conference is to create a forum in which researchers from academia and industry, practitioners, business leaders, intellectual property experts and venture capitalists may work together in order to compare and debate different innovative solutions. The conference will feature a highly selective technical program consisting of regular papers, short papers, and posters as well as specialized tracks at the intersection of business and technology. In the absence of manual annotation specifying the content of the media (in the form of captions or tags), most current content management software only allow simple browsing and navigation options; which severely limits the search and other advanced functionality. This is complicated by the available types of media such as images, video, music, speech, text, and graphics, and the relationship and interactions among them. In addition to personal collections located at home PCs and laptops, the wide spread popularity of media and social networking sites such as Flickr, YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, Easyshare Gallery has enabled users to share and browse images and videos. However, due to the huge magnitude and variety of media content, it is increasing difficult for users and consumers to easily navigate, search, compose, and share their content and memories. When we consider the multimedia information available on public web sites, we will be confronting with a big scalability issue with many existing techniques and algorithms. Solutions that address the broad spectrum of personal and social multimedia applications are needed. The goal of this workshop is to provide a technical forum for researchers from academy and industry to discuss the advances and challenges of information processing, analysis, and retrieval for multimedia applications in personal and social domains. We propose to explore emerging areas of research such as cross-media and cross-domain information analysis and extraction, which will enhance current capability of information management applications and enrich the overall multimedia experience. Another area is to leverage rich metadata and contextual information associated with the media content. These include GPS, date/time, captions/tags, camera settings, face and other biometric information. The advances in user interface technologies incorporating speech and gesture recognition will also play an important role in enabling more user friendly and easy to use multimedia applications in the consumer domain. We welcome papers that address fundamental research issues in this challenging area, with emphasis on personal and social applications. We also encourage papers to report on system level research related to multimedia and cross-media analysis, processing, and retrieval. A number of invited papers will also be solicited. The advent of digital technologies has made the creation and manipulation of multimedia content simpler. It offers higher quality and a lot more convenience to consumers. For example, it allows one to make perfect copies. Together with the growing volumes of digital data, increasingly the Internet is used for the distribution of the digital data. The ease with which digital goods can be copied and redistributed makes the Internet well suited for unauthorized copying, modification and redistribution. The rapid adoption of new technologies such as high-bandwidth connections, wireless networks, and peer-to-peer networks is accelerating this process. Multimedia security and content protection technologies and systems are intended to protect the intellectual property rights of content owners in scenarios in which the participants have conflicting goals and are not fully trusted. However, developing secure multimedia applications and solutions in a distributed environment with competing technologies and emerging standards is an enormous challenge. This workshop intends to provide a forum that researchers, developers and practitioners from multimedia security communities come together to share the vision of “multimedia security and content protection in this rapidly growing digital world”. Moreover, mining semantics and other useful information from large-scale Internet multimedia data to facilitate online and local multimedia content analysis, search, and other related applications has also gained more and more attention from both academia and industry. On the one hand, the rapid increase of online multimedia data brings us new challenges to multimedia content analysis and multimedia retrieval especially in terms of scalability. Both computational costs and accuracy are still far from satisfactory. While on the other hand, Internet also provides us new opportunities to attack these challenges as well as conventional problems in media analysis and computer vision. That is, the massive associated metadata available on the Internet, as well as the massive grassroots Internet users, are valuable resources that can be leveraged to solve the aforementioned difficulties. Recently, more and more researchers are realizing both the challenges and the opportunities for multimedia research brought by the Internet. In particular, the increasing architectural complexity and application sophistication make it essential to have an inter-disciplinary research between algorithms and hardware designs. The workshop is to bridge the gap between algorithms and architecture designs for the development of future computer and multimedia systems. In particular, multi-core processors are now prevalent everywhere from desktops and graphics processors to laptops and embedded systems. Technology predictions indicate that this trend will continue and that there will be increasing numbers of cores (homogenous or heterogeneous) in future systems. It is clear that multimedia systems of tomorrow will be (and must be) implemented on platforms with multiple cores. While the challenges of designing multi-core systems in hardware are many, writing efficient parallel applications that utilize the computing capability of many processing cores may reveal to be even more challenging. Existing serial algorithms will need to be redesigned -- the best sequential algorithm is not necessarily the best parallel algorithm. Signal processing algorithm designers must understand the nuances of a multi-core computing engine. Only then can the tremendous computing power that such platforms provide be harnessed efficiently. We are organizing a poster session in the workshop. We would like to attract both tutorial-like and non-tutorial, research-oriented poster papers on (1) novel multimedia applications that can be enabled by platform with multiple cores, and (2) design examples of multimedia signal processing on platforms with multiple cores that demonstrate the techniques or algorithm changes for efficient implementations. *****Submission Procedure***** Prospective authors should submit 2-page white papers to the workshop chairs according to the following timetable. To better understand the nature of the edge, it is important to evaluate these technologies in an operational environment via empirical measurements. While analytic simulation-based approaches are useful, they are often limited by the simplistic modeling of the wireless protocols and the error-prone wireless channel. In this workshop we would like to solicit short 6-page papers that advance the understanding of operational wireless networks through measurements in testbeds or the field. Yet, issues like efficient mobility management and optimization, locator-identifier split, multi-homing, security, wireless access and related operational/deployment concerns are still in their early stages of development. Moreover, the Internet architecture, its end-to-end principles, and business models will require rethinking due to the massive penetration of mobility into the Internet. For instance, an appropriate system that allows communicating with a mobile host requires addressing several fundamental issues with the Internet architecture, such as ability to locate the mobile host/service, preserving ongoing communications upon changes of locations, as well as efficient and secure handover management. As another example, the emerging wireless technologies may pose additional challenges to the Internet architecture since they introduce design principles different from the original Internet. MobiArch 2009 welcomes submissions, from both researchers and practitioners, in exploration of recent advances in architectures, protocols, and experiences with emerging technologies on various mobility issues over the Internet, with an emphasis on wireless infrastructures and mobility patterns for mobility support, new mobility protocols, service discovery, routing and location management, mobile network performance evaluation and modelling, multi-homing, security, architectural impacts and deployment considerations. Furthermore, the potential of usability of mobility services for connecting people and devices in developing regions of the world into the Internet infrastructure will be also explored. We apologize for multiple receipts of this CFP. ------------------ International Journal of Critical Infrastructure Protection (Elsevier Publication) Special Issue: Secure Self-Organised Networking Infrastructures for Extreme Emergency Services Debates about emergency services usually diverge into discussions about most prominent catastrophes (e.g. earthquakes, flooding) and terrorist attacks. Such events tend to create a crisis and panic on the society. In such events, self-organized networking infrastructure (i.e. ad-hoc, wireless mesh) can be deployed in a secure and reliable manner in case of infrastructure network collapse so that an appropriate crisis handling management can be applied. This strategy coordinates all the available resources in terms of public services (i.e. police, authorities, hospital, fire-brigade etc) so that this crisis is resolved smoothly. While these extreme events surely represent some of the most demanding scenarios for emergency services, in order to fulfill the requirements of modern societies, research and development in the area of emergency services need to address a much broader scope. This change has been brought about by immense research progress in all layers of the network hierarchy, i.e., ranging from new applications, to service-aware networking protocols and hardwares, all the way down to physical transmission technologies (both wireless and wireline). Now as the Internet continues to evolve and expand today, a host of new research challenges and business opportunities are beckoning. Of particular importance are emerging topics in the area of network heterogeneity, virtualization, services, and security. The growing cadre of wireless users is also adding another dimension into the mix and pushing to the forefront issues such as mobility management, content distribution, and self-organization. Along these lines, the Next-Generation Networking & Internet Symposium of IEEE GLOBECOM 2009 will address some of these exciting new challenges and focus areas. Specifically, this event will solicit participation from both academic and industry researchers working in key areas of Internet design such as enabling technologies, services, architectures, and protocols. The overriding goal of this symposium will be to garner the collective experience and expertise of these researchers to help uncover the latest trends and directions for future Internet design. Another concurrent aim will also be to solicit new ideas on the future migration of the Internet, with regards to evolutionary or greenfield strategies. As a consequence, WSNs require novel programming paradigms and technologies. Moreover the design of new complex systems, characterized by the interaction of different and heterogeneous resources, will allow the development of innovative applications that meet high performance goals. Hence, WSNs require contributions from many fields such as embedded systems, distributed systems, data management, system security and applications. The conference places emphasis on layers well above the traditional MAC and routing, and transport layer protocols. The aim of the conference is to create a forum in which researchers from academia and industry, practitioners, business leaders, intellectual property experts and venture capitalists may work together in order to compare and debate different innovative solutions. The program committee will evaluate each paper using metrics that are appropriate for the topic area. For example, a systems or experimental paper in the protocol area will be evaluated based on the innovations in the protocol design, practical implementation, and realistic evaluation, whereas a more theoretical paper may be evaluated mostly based on innovation within the algorithm design. At the same time, the evaluation of wireless and mobile networking technologies is challenging because of the significant impact that the physical environment has on performance. For this reason, all papers must carefully describe and justify the evaluation methodology that is used and identify its strengths and weaknesses. Wireless and mobile networks are being used in a wide variety of application contexts, such as sensor networks, pervasive computing, disruption tolerant networking, and vehicular networks. Papers that describe research and experimentation in such environments are encouraged, but the focus of such papers should be on addressing challenges associated with mobility and wireless networking. The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. CHALLENGES PAPERS: The conference strongly encourages the submission of short papers in the field of mobile computing and wireless networking that present revolutionary new ideas or that challenge existing assumptions prevalent among the research community. These "challenges papers" should provide stimulating ideas or visions that may open up exciting avenues and/or influence the direction of future research. Descriptions of new products or evolution of existing work are not appropriate topics for papers in this category. While an exhaustive evaluation of the proposed ideas is not necessary, insight and in-depth understanding of the issues is expected. Challenges papers will be reviewed by the MobiCom program committee and will be part of the technical program and published in ACM MobiCom proceedings. They should be submitted using the same submission procedure adopted for the full papers. The title of these papers must start with the word "Challenges:" i.e., "Challenges: Rest of the Title." Eventual working solutions involve efforts from hospital personnel, standard committees, federal agencies, IT industry and research community. This workshop is a forum for researchers and practitioner to exchange information regarding advancement in the state of the art and practices as well as to identify the emerging research topics and define the future of wireless health-care systems. The technical program will consist of invited talks, paper presentations, and panel discussions.
