Cyber-physical systems are physical and engineered systems whose operations are integrated, monitored, and controlled by a computational core. The integration of computational and physical processes exhibit complicated behavior that can not be analyzed by the computational or physical sciences alone. These systems also transcend traditional computer-controlled systems because of their scale, dependence on man-machine interaction and their rich communication infrastructure that is enabled by the Internet. Some of the most challenging R&D software problems for cyber-physical systems are those associated with producing distributed, real-time, and embedded platforms and applications, and where computers control physical, chemical, or biological processes or devices. Examples of such systems include airplanes and air traffic control systems, automobiles, power grids, oil refineries, and patient monitoring systems. Despite advances in standards-based commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) technologies, key challenges must be addressed before COTS software can be used to build mission-critical distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems effectively and productively. Furthermore, there are existing critical infrastructures that oversee the operations of everything from nuclear power plants to traffic lights and yet they may not even be able to accept static upgrades, or patches, or any dynamic change of behavior, but they will remain with us for quite some time. Dynamically retrofitting these systems while maintaining their stability within a cyber environment is a significant challenge yet to be overcome. The International Workshop on Cyber-Physical Systems (WCPS2009) is an international forum for researchers to exchange information regarding advancements in the state of the art and practice of CPS, as well as to identify the emerging research topics and define the future of CPS. The technical program of WCPS2009 will consist of invited talks, paper presentations, and panel discussions. Topics of Interest In summary, the main topics of interest are on grand challenges, requirements, architectures, innovations and abstractions for Cyber-Physical Systems as well as technical challenges to interface and manipulate the Physical World. In particular, we are seeking papers in, but not limited to, the following main areas: [Architecture and infrastructure] Current architectures for cyber physical systems tend to be based on layers of network, OS, and middleware that have evolved over decades in the context of general-purpose computing systems. One goal of this topic area is to seek architectural abstractions, mechanisms, and formalisms that are better suited to the needs of cyber-physical systems. Some example topics include: approaches for refactoring the technology base to collapse/remove layers; techniques for managing QoS properties top-to-bottom; and end-to-end in ultra-large-scale cyber-physical systems. [Fundamental system services] Decades of experience with enterprise systems have yielded reasonably good abstractions and technologies for developing reusable services, such as transactions, discovery, naming, and event notification. There is much less consensus and experience, however, on the appropriate abstractions and technologies for fundamental system services in cyber-physical systems. Some example topics include 'multi-ility' services, such as security, reliable, and predictable replica-based fault detection and isolation frameworks that can operate in resource-constrained safety- and mission-critical CPS environments. [Service composition/synthesis] This area involves rigorous, evidence-producing composition (and composites) of system services, often using novel languages and models of computation. Some example topics include "type systems for QoS contracts" or "checkable properties of dynamic event structures" or "synthesis of mixed-criticality RTOS tailored for domain X". The time and scheduling, behavioral interaction, and partitioning/isolation will be central cross-cutting issues. [Interaction and coordination] A single critical infrastructure facility can have thousands of devices, such as in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, that spread over hundreds of miles. The devices themselves are typically in a physically protected environment; yet the interactions among them, on the other hand, go through the cyber space which poses a challenge to us and calls for a paradigm that is interaction and coordination centric. [Integration] CPS research is fundamentally different from prior computer controlled research. One aspect of the difference lies in the tighter integration and co-design of the cyber and the physi-cal subsystems. In the past the stability theory in engineering concerns about the suppression of various kind of errors -- uncertainties in the model, disturbance from environment, noise in sensing and errors in actuators -- except that bugs in at the heart of the control process: the complex software that controls the plant. On the other hand, main stream software fault tolerance techniques such as primary-and-standby do not take advantage of the fact that the physical plants must obey laws of nature; This opens new insights for the integration of cyberand physical systems. [Proactive monitoring] There are numerous existing systems, such as chemical plants, oil refiners, power grids, that have been in existence and correctly functioning for many years, and until now were not considered vulnerable because these systems were not envisioned to run in the cyber environment which has become today's reality. Theses systems face the high risk of being a terrorist target though cyber invasions. On the other side, it is out of the question that we re-build or prescribe a complete upgrade of all these systems. Worse yet, it may even be too expensive to take the mentality of ``dispatch-and- then-patch''. Therefore, external, lightweight and proactive monitoring of the systems is essential in building or retrofitting CPS. [Applications and experiences] New CPS applications and experiences, such as Tele-Physical Services, Smart Transportation, etc. We learn from our past experiences: through our encounters with real-life applications and experiences with new technologies, we develop the skill set and tools to perform better in the future. Paper Submission The workshop solicits original and previously unpublished papers reporting results from research and/or industrial experience as well as discussion of grand challenges and requirements. Emphasis should be placed on techniques or lessons that may generalize to other components. * Management topics, such as specification and modeling of service-level agreements, negotiation/conversation support, behavior enforcement, etc., tie in with IT governance, and interaction with legacy systems. * Interfaces to autonomic systems, including user interfaces, interfaces for monitoring and controlling behavior, techniques for defining, distributing, and understanding policies. * Experiences with autonomic system or component prototypes: measurements, evaluations, or analyses of system behavior, user studies, experiences with large-scale deployments of self-managing systems or applications. * Applications of autonomics to real and complex problems in science, engineering, business and society. PAPER/POSTER SUBMISSIONS AND PUBLICATION Full papers (a maximum of 10 pages in length) and posters (2 pages) are invited on a wide variety of topics relating to autonomic computing as indicated above. All manuscripts will be reviewed and judged on merits including correctness, originality, technical strength, quality of presentation, and relevance to the conference themes. Submitted papers must include original work, and may not be under consideration for another conference or journal. They should also not be under review or be submitted to another forum during the ICAC-09 review process. Authors should submit full papers or posters electronically (PDF or postscript) via EDAS using the link on the ICAC-09 conference web site. SCOPE The Workshop provides a forum for engineers and scientists in academia, industry and government to present their latest research findings in specialized ad-hoc networks and systems. As an alternative to one-size-fits-all general solutions in the area of ad hoc networking and systems, we want to stimulate the application-oriented divide-and-conquer approach to ad hoc network and system research. The goal is to provide sound and efficient specialized ad hoc networks and systems (SAHNS), suitable for building solutions specific for well-defined classes of applications or even individual applications. We want to consider both specialized ad hoc networks and specialized ad hoc systems. The latter can be built on top of specialized ad hoc networks. Alternatively, they can be constructed independently of specialized ad hoc networks, e.g., on top of general-purpose ad hoc networks. It should be emphasized that SAHNS is interested only in solutions specific to specialized ad hoc networks and systems. The Workshop is not interested in broad general-purpose solutions for all ad hoc networks and systems, or in generic solutions for extremely broad subclasses of ad hoc networks and systems. For example, the Workshop is not interested in general-purpose solutions for all sensornets or all P2P systems but is instead interested in specialized solutions for their application-oriented subclasses. One example of SAHNS targeted by this workshop are Incident Area Networks (IANs), dedicated to single incidents or events. An IAN can be pre-deployed for a planned event, such as a sporting or "nationally significant" event, or can be dynamically deployed for an unplanned incident, such as a local law enforcement situation or a natural disaster. Another example are opportunistic resource utilization networks (e.g., oppnets), in which the network reacts to a lack of resources by finding and incorporating "helpers" that have needed resources or services. PAPER SUBMISSION Papers must be submitted in the PDF format, with numbered pages. They should have no more than 6 pages following the IEEE Computer Society proceedings format (8.5 by 11 inch sheets, double-column, 10 point or larger font, single-spaced). The following information must be provided on the first page: o Paper title o Full names, affiliations and email addresses of all authors o An abstract (up to 150 words) o Five to ten keywords/phrases o A footnote with the indication of the corresponding author, plus the complete address, phone and fax numbers of the corresponding author Papers should be submitted by emailing them to: llilien(a)cs.wmich.edu Each received submission will be confirmed, usually within two workdays. 3. PAPER REVIEW AND PUBLISHING Each paper will be peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers and their comments will be provided to the authors. If accepted, the paper will be published in the workshop proceedings by the IEEE Computer Society Press, provided that at least one of its authors registers for ICDCS (which includes SAHNS) by the early registration deadline. As all conferences published by the IEEE Computer Society's Conference Publishing Services (CPS), ICDCS proceedings will be indexed through INSPEC, the leading English-language bibliographic information service for scientific and technical literature. ICDCS proceedings will also be submitted for indexing to EI's Engineering Information Index, Compendex, ISI Thomson's Scientific and Technical Proceedings, ISTP/ISI Proceedings, and Current Contents on Diskette (ISI Thomson). We plan a special issue of an international journal with extended versions of the selected SAHNS papers. 4. In particular, it will cover physical, data link, network and transport layers, as well as applications, security, simulation and power management issues in sensor, local area, personal, and mobile ad hoc networks. It is the goal of this workshop to review ad hoc protocols and models and to reflect the latest in the state of the art in ad hoc networks. It seeks to provide up to date information on research and development activities in the rapidly growing area of ad hoc networks. The workshop will also address the rapidly growing field of sensor networks, including the issues related to their topology, routing, performance, data gathering and filtering, energy efficiency, and mobility. Papers should be submitted as PDF files, using either the IEEE Computer Society proceedings format (two column, 10 point, single-spaced, US Letter, all margins no smaller than one inch). However, there is still a long way to go for mature solutions of multimedia database systems that are capable of processing semantics-rich, large-volume multimedia data. With several favorable characteristics, such as dynamic self-organization, self-configuration, self-healing, easy maintenance, high scalability and reliable services, wireless mesh networks have been advocated as a cost-effective approach to support high-speed last mile connectivity and ubiquitous broadband access in the context of home networking, enterprise networking, or community networking. Despite recent advances, and the technical accumulations from more than a decade's research effort in mobile ad hoc networks, many research issues remain in all protocol layers of wireless mesh networks. For example, the introducing of mixed (infrastructure and ad hoc) architecture, multi-radio, multi-channel, and multi-antenna, have brought new challenges in the design of physical, MAC, and routing protocols. New application scenarios, such as all-wireless office, are urging researchers to address enhanced QoS support and various security issues in the design of different protocol layers for wireless mesh networks. This workshop aims to bring together the technologies and researchers who share interest in the area of wireless mesh and ad hoc networks. The main purpose is to promote discussions of research and relevant activities in the design of architectures, protocols, algorithms, services, and applications for wireless networks. It also aims at increasing the synergy between academic and industry professionals working in this area. More generally, SI refers to the bottom-up design of distributed systems that display forms of useful and/or interesting behaviors at the global level as a result of the relatively simple actions of a number of composing units interacting with one another and with their environment at the local level. When properly engineered, an SI system can conjugate easiness of design with high performance in terms of robustness, scalability, and adaptivity. These challenges ask for the development of novel control and management algorithms and protocols that are adaptive, robust, scalable, and can let the network behave as an autonomous and self-organizing system. Since these are the properties that can almost naturally result when adopting a properly engineered SI design approach, a considerable amount of work in the domain of SI has successfully addressed a variety of problems in the area of communication networks. Call for Papers SI on Enabling Wireless Technologies for Green Pervasive Computing Wireless pervasive computing is a rapidly growing area that has attracted significant attention in recent years due to its tremendous potential impact on the quality of life and the environment. To enable green pervasive computing, it is necessary to integrate technologies, many of which are highly heterogeneous, from various fields including distributed computing, networking, communications, and signal processing. Pervasive technologies can be used in various ways to develop and enhance design models for environment sustainability. Pervasive computing is a power tool used in businesses and social contexts to develop computing devices and solutions which are more environment friendly. This Special Issue focuses on enabling wireless technologies that have the potential to make green pervasive computing truly ubiquitous. Many enabling wireless technologies continue to be deployed in various pervasive computing environments. There is an increasing interest in the computing community on how these technologies can be responsibly used environmentally to provide ubiquitous information access. The main aim of this special issue is to present the latest research achievements and results in the area of green pervasive computing and, in particular, how next generation wireless systems can help support and promote a sustainable environment. CALL FOR PAPERS Int’l Symposium on Multimedia over Wireless (ISMW 2009) in conjunction with The 5th International Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing Conference (IWCMC 2009) 21-24 JUNE 2009, LEIPZIG, GERMANY http://www.iwcmc.com/ One of the key elements in the convergence of future networks and services to IP technology is the efficient support of rich multimedia applications and services over wireless networks including sensor and mesh networks. The delivery and transport of multimedia in such wireless environments, to heterogeneous mobiles and users, is very challenging. The multimedia services should face many shortcomings caused mainly by the wireless channel unreliability and its sharing among many users, limited bandwidth, random time-varying fading effect, different protocols and standards, etc. Future multimedia services require innovation and advances in better MAC and routing protocols, session establishment and signaling architectures, cross-layer interaction and optimization, QoS provisioning and continuity, adaptive transmission techniques, and scalability support, among others. The purpose of this symposium is to solicit high-quality theoretical and practical research on the landscape of recent advances on multimedia over wireless. The resulting global-level behaviors usually show a number of properties essential for success in natural environments such as: adaptivity to environmental variations, robustness to internal changes and failures, and effectiveness and scalability of performance. Because of all these architectural and performance properties, the observation and reverse-engineering of successful processes in organic, inorganic, and animal systems in nature, has drawn in recent years the attention of many researchers and engineers working in the fields of parallel and distributed systems, and, more in particular, in telecommunications networks. In these domains, nature has provided basic inspiration for the definition of a number of novel algorithms and computational frameworks able to deal effectively with the challenges of current networked systems, which show a growing structural and computational complexity and are made of a large number of highly dynamic and heterogeneous components. The aim of the workshop is to provide a forum to present cutting edge research on nature-inspired approaches to problems arising in the design, control, protection, and management of network systems, and to outline new trends in parallel nature-inspired computation for the solution of complex problems. EvoCOMNET is part of EVOSTAR (EVO*), Europe's premier co-located events in the field of evolutionary and nature-inspired computing. Typical application domains for MCN include critical infrastructure protection and operation, emergency and crisis intervention, healthcare services, and military operations. Such networking is essential for safety, security and economic vitality in our complex world characterized by uncertainty, heterogeneity, emergent behaviors, and the need for reliable and timely response. MCN should comprise networking technology, infrastructures and services that may alleviate the risk and directly enable and enhance connectivity for mission-critical information exchange among diverse, widely-dispersed, mobile users. A primary challenge to MCN is to deploy and dynamically configure and evolve communication networks that are dependable, autonomic, secure, adaptive, and rapidly deployable to support critical missions and their priorities. In order to operate effectively, the deployed networks should support services such as location determination of both authorized and unauthorized entities, quality-of-service aware audio and video communication, emergency calling and alerting, and in-situ and remote sensing and control in a secure and dependable manner. In addition, efficient operation of such networks that typically include numerous resource-constrained components may benefit from cross-layer optimization, cognition, resource engineering, on-demand federation, and service-oriented architecture. Also important is the integration of MCN with the Internet to reduce cost of deployment and maintenance and to enhance reachability and ubiquity. This special issue of the Journal on Selected Areas in Communications solicits high quality technical contributions in mission-critical networking including, but not limited to: - Architecture and design of MCN and next-generation emergency calling and alerting - Rapidly and dynamically deployable services and networks - Evolving "elastic" networking with decentralized and peer-to-peer resource management and allocation - Federation and policy management for heterogeneous networks and protocols - Trust, security, dependability, privacy, QoS and performance awareness and management for MCN - Sensor and actuator networks for critical information gathering, tracking and real-time control - MCN traffic and mobility analysis - Formal methodology for cognitive, autonomic, and context-aware protocols and network management - Spectrum management and access - Testbeds, benchmarks, performance and experimental studies ** Paper Submission Manuscripts should describe original, previously unpublished work, not currently under review. Cyber-physical systems are physical and engineered systems whose operations are integrated, monitored, and controlled by a computational core. The integration of computational and physical processes exhibit complicated behavior that can not be analyzed by the computational or physical sciences alone. These systems also transcend traditional computer-controlled systems because of their scale, dependence on man-machine interaction and their rich communication infrastructure that is enabled by the Internet. Some of the most challenging R&D software problems for cyber-physical systems are those associated with producing distributed, real-time, and embedded platforms and applications, and where computers control physical, chemical, or biological processes or devices. Examples of such systems include airplanes and air traffic control systems, automobiles, power grids, oil refineries, and patient monitoring systems. Despite advances in standards-based commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) technologies, key challenges must be addressed before COTS software can be used to build mission-critical distributed real-time embedded (DRE) systems effectively and productively. Furthermore, there are existing critical infrastructures that oversee the operations of everything from nuclear power plants to traffic lights and yet they may not even be able to accept static upgrades, or patches, or any dynamic change of behavior, but they will remain with us for quite some time. Dynamically retrofitting these systems while maintaining their stability within a cyber environment is a significant challenge yet to be overcome. The International Workshop on Cyber-Physical Systems (WCPS2009) is an international forum for researchers to exchange information regarding advancements in the state of the art and practice of CPS, as well as to identify the emerging research topics and define the future of CPS. The technical program of WCPS2009 will consist of invited talks, paper presentations, and panel discussions. Topics of Interest In summary, the main topics of interest are on grand challenges, requirements, architectures, innovations and abstractions for Cyber-Physical Systems as well as technical challenges to interface and manipulate the Physical World. In particular, we are seeking papers in, but not limited to, the following main areas: [Architecture and infrastructure] Current architectures for cyber physical systems tend to be based on layers of network, OS, and middleware that have evolved over decades in the context of general-purpose computing systems. One goal of this topic area is to seek architectural abstractions, mechanisms, and formalisms that are better suited to the needs of cyber-physical systems. Some example topics include: approaches for refactoring the technology base to collapse/remove layers; techniques for managing QoS properties top-to-bottom; and end-to-end in ultra-large-scale cyber-physical systems. [Fundamental system services] Decades of experience with enterprise systems have yielded reasonably good abstractions and technologies for developing reusable services, such as transactions, discovery, naming, and event notification. There is much less consensus and experience, however, on the appropriate abstractions and technologies for fundamental system services in cyber-physical systems. Some example topics include 'multi-ility' services, such as security, reliable, and predictable replica-based fault detection and isolation frameworks that can operate in resource-constrained safety- and mission-critical CPS environments. [Service composition/synthesis] This area involves rigorous, evidence-producing composition (and composites) of system services, often using novel languages and models of computation. Some example topics include "type systems for QoS contracts" or "checkable properties of dynamic event structures" or "synthesis of mixed-criticality RTOS tailored for domain X". The time and scheduling, behavioral interaction, and partitioning/isolation will be central cross-cutting issues. [Interaction and coordination] A single critical infrastructure facility can have thousands of devices, such as in supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, that spread over hundreds of miles. The devices themselves are typically in a physically protected environment; yet the interactions among them, on the other hand, go through the cyber space which poses a challenge to us and calls for a paradigm that is interaction and coordination centric. [Integration] CPS research is fundamentally different from prior computer controlled research. One aspect of the difference lies in the tighter integration and co-design of the cyber and the physi-cal subsystems. In the past the stability theory in engineering concerns about the suppression of various kind of errors -- uncertainties in the model, disturbance from environment, noise in sensing and errors in actuators -- except that bugs in at the heart of the control process: the complex software that controls the plant. On the other hand, main stream software fault tolerance techniques such as primary-and-standby do not take advantage of the fact that the physical plants must obey laws of nature; This opens new insights for the integration of cyberand physical systems. [Proactive monitoring] There are numerous existing systems, such as chemical plants, oil refiners, power grids, that have been in existence and correctly functioning for many years, and until now were not considered vulnerable because these systems were not envisioned to run in the cyber environment which has become today's reality. Theses systems face the high risk of being a terrorist target though cyber invasions. On the other side, it is out of the question that we re-build or prescribe a complete upgrade of all these systems. Worse yet, it may even be too expensive to take the mentality of ``dispatch-and- then-patch''. Therefore, external, lightweight and proactive monitoring of the systems is essential in building or retrofitting CPS. [Applications and experiences] New CPS applications and experiences, such as Tele-Physical Services, Smart Transportation, etc. We learn from our past experiences: through our encounters with real-life applications and experiences with new technologies, we develop the skill set and tools to perform better in the future. CALL FOR PAPERS For the reliable performance evaluation of wireless networks, realistic models and credible simulation scenarios are crucial. Recently, in the area of wireless networks, it has been shown that simplistic models for mobility, traffic, and signal propagation yield results that are too optimistic. In order to provide more credible models, traces from specific scenarios need to be acquired and then realistic scenario models need to be developed and validated. We solicit papers on mobility, traffic, propagation, and scenario modelling for various wireless networks including MANETs, DTNs and vehicular networks. Papers on trace measurement architectures and trace characterizations of wireless networks are also welcome. The main purpose of this workshop is to promote further research interests and activities on scenario modelling of wireless networks. It is also aimed at increasing the synergy between academic and industrial researchers working in this area. CALL FOR PAPERS For the reliable performance evaluation of wireless networks, realistic models and credible simulation scenarios are crucial. Recently, in the area of wireless networks, it has been shown that simplistic models for mobility, traffic, and signal propagation yield results that are too optimistic. In order to provide more credible models, traces from specific scenarios need to be acquired and then realistic scenario models need to be developed and validated. We solicit papers on mobility, traffic, propagation, and scenario modelling for various wireless networks including MANETs, DTNs and vehicular networks. Papers on trace measurement architectures and trace characterizations of wireless networks are also welcome. The main purpose of this workshop is to promote further research interests and activities on scenario modelling of wireless networks. Moreover, today's wireless networks are characterized by fixed spectrum assignment policies, which often lead to wasting large spectrum portions due to sporadic utilization of the licensed users (according to FCC, only 15% to 85% of the licensed spectrum is utilized on the average). This situation has motivated and pushed forward the development of novel low-power wireless Cognitive Radio transceivers with the capability of changing their transmitter parameters (operating spectrum, modulation, transmission power and communication technology) based on interaction with the surrounding environment. Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) based on nodes equipped with cognitive transceivers have consequently emerged as viable architectural solutions to solve current wireless network problems resulting from the limited available spectrum and the inefficiency in the spectrum usage by exploiting the existing wireless spectrum opportunistically. Scope and Contributions This special issue aims to consolidate and disseminate the latest developments and advances in the emerging area of Multi-hop CRNs, which is defined as a collection of cognitive transceiver-equipped nodes forming a multi-hop communication network. The main focus of this special issue is on networking aspects of multi-hop CRNs where the information needs to be relayed over multiple wireless links. Multi-hop CRNs responsibility is not only limited to the discovery and allocation of wireless resources while avoiding service disruption for primary users. Additional tasks must be accomplished to sustain end-to-end communication, including identification of sets of relay nodes, ensuring that required bandwidth is available over all necessary links, and regulating resource sharing among all flows in the network. Most importantly, these goals must be achieved while coping with negative effects of frequent link outages due to primary user access. Preferably, the multi-hop CRN must also ensure that flow requirements, such as bandwidth, delay, and jitter bounds, are met. This special issue provides opportunities for the research community, the standardization bodies, and the industry to showcase the-state-of-the-art of the research on networking aspects of Multi-hop CRNs, implementation studies, and feasibility analyses. Moreover, since the success of CRN also depends on spectrum regulatory aspect, we also solicit critical contributions addressing the problem of managing the competition in spectrum access under regulated, partially regulated or unregulated Multi-hop CRN architectures. While the nature of the multi-hop CRNs necessitates high levels of interaction and dependency between the physical layer and protocols and solutions at MAC layer and above, the main focus of this special issue is the networking aspects of multi-hop CRNs. Therefore, the design of cognitive transceivers and hardware, signal processing techniques, modulation and coding methods, physical layer channel models, as well as networking issues primarily concerning single-hop CRNs fall outside the scope of the special issue. In addition to original research articles, we also solicit survey and position articles in the area of networking aspects of multi-hop CRNs. The purpose of the First International Workshop on Autonomic Wireless Networking is to bring together researchers and practitioners addressing all aspects of self-organization, adaptive management of available resources, cooperation and detection of selfishness in wireless networks. In doing so, we hope to further build and nurture a community that can work together to realize the vision of large-scale autonomic wireless networks. Papers are solicited in the broad range of wireless networking with focus on autonomic communication. These entities may form dynamic coalitions where entities may leave and join, may show mobility aspects (either logical or physical), and may act in a collective manner. Examples of these coalitions can be found in the digital world, including: a) Crowds of users walking on the streets with advanced context aware converged telecommunication devices; b) A group of robots, manned and unmanned vehicles equipped with processors, sensors, smart-phones, etc. interacting with each other, with their environment, and with a command or a control node, such as the command and control site of a defence coalition or a civil traffic control; c) A set of organizations (possibly virtual) sharing some resource for service provisions, or so called Virtual Organisations; d) Collaborative processes that use resources and services offered by partners in a Virtual Organisation; and e) Web 2.0 mash-ups and composite Web Services that are composed of services and applications offered by different service providers over a public network. These dynamic coalitions involve several technologies as peer to peer systems (P2P), mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs), and service oriented architectures such as those realised in GRID computing and Web Services Frameworks. There are several research areas identified as follows: a) Security in dynamic coalitions; b) trust in dynamic coalitions; c) security and trust interplay; and 4) secure processes and service composition. This requires seamless access to media, information sharing and communication through heterogeneous systems, which are distributed and may be deeply embedded in the physical environment. To achieve this goal, it is necessary to deepen our understanding of human behaviour in context and its impact on technological issues relevant to ubiquitous environments. Research in this area is rapidly gaining importance and has become an essential part of pervasive and mobile computing systems. This special issue solicits original papers that contribute to our understanding of human behaviour and its impact on the design, development and use of applications in mobile and ubiquitous settings. Submissions should be of high standard for an international, archival research journal, and will be reviewed according to the strict standards of the PMC journal. Papers should not have been submitted or published elsewhere but could be extended or refined versions of conference papers with significant new, original material. Extended versions or refined versions of conference papers are expected to differ from the conference version by at least 30% across all sections - authors are requested to submit their published conference articles and a summary document explaining the enhancements made in the journal version. Call for Papers for a Special Issue on 'Performance Evaluation of Wireless Ad Hoc, Sensor, and Ubiquitous Networks' Elsevier's Performance Evaluation: an International Journal http://www.elsevier.com/peva ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Wireless ad hoc, sensor, along with ubiquitous networks have recently witnessed their fastest growth period ever in history, and this trend is likely to continue for the foreseeable future. However, as such networks become increasingly complex, performance modelling and evaluation will play a crucial part in their design process to ensure their successful deployment and exploitation in practice. Elsevier's Performance Evaluation solicits papers from researchers and practitioners that address the issues of performance evaluation of wireless Ad Hoc, sensor and ubiquitous networks for inclusion in a Special Issue on 'Performance Evaluation of Wireless Ad Hoc, Sensor, and Ubiquitous Networks'. Scope of Contributions ---------------------- Authors are encouraged to submit original contributions, with both theoretical and practical results of significance on all timely aspects of wireless and mobile technologies with an emphasis on performance evaluation. Topics of interest include, but are not limited, to: - Predictive performance models of ad hoc, sensor, and ubiquitous networks - Analytical modeling - Probabilistic models for ad hoc, sensor and ubiquitous networks - Queuing and network information theoretic analysis - Tracing and trace analysis - Software tools for network performance and evaluation - Simulation methods and tools - Automatic performance analysis - Performance comparison - Performance of wireless and sensor devices - RF channel capacity modeling and analysis - Mobility modeling and management - Traffic models for ad hoc, sensor networks - Performance evaluation of wireless ad hoc, mesh, sensor, vehicular and hybrid networks - Performance evaluation of pervasive and ubiquitous networks - Network performance improvement through optimization and tuning - Performance measurement, evaluation and monitoring tools for ad hoc, sensor and ubiquitous networks - Case studies demonstrating the role of performance evaluation in the design of ad hoc, sensor and ubiquitous networks Submission Details ------------------ Only original and unpublished research papers will be considered for this Special Issue. If the paper has been published at a conference, the submitted journal version should be significantly extended. In this case, authors should submit a short summary document explaining the enhancements made in the journal version. The manuscripts must be prepared in English.
