We apologize if you received multiple copies of this message. ------------------------------ CALL FOR PAPERS ------------------------------ The First International Workshop on Information Quality and Quality of Service for Pervasive Computing (IQ2S 2009) Website: http://iq2s2009.i2r.a-star.edu.sg In Conjunction with IEEE PerCom 2009 (http://www.percom.org) Galveston, Texas, March 9-13, 2009 Quality of service (QoS) has been studied in various building blocks in pervasive computing, e.g., different QoS mechanisms are presented for wireless or wired networks, with QoS metrics being described in terms of delay, bandwidth, and/or data loss etc. The emerging pervasive computing is application-driven and mission-critical, therefore the information quality (IQ), such as the accuracy of target tracking or event detection, is also critical for the end users, service providers and the system designers. IQ and QoS provisioning for pervasive computing is challenging and difficult due to the resource-constrained, dynamic and distributed nature of the system, the weakness under security attacking, and the lack of a holistic design approach which takes into account the different types of resources and their inter-dependencies. The objective of this workshop is to provide a forum to exchange ideas, present results, share experience, and enhance collaborations among researchers, professionals, and application developers in various aspects of IQ and QoS for pervasive computing. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * System architecture for IQ and QoS provisioning * IQ-oriented signal & information processing (e.g., source coding and data compression) * QoS for target/event detection, localization, tracking and classification * QoS for wireless ad hoc and sensor networks (including coverage and connectivity) * QoS for task mapping and scheduling * Cross-layer design for coordinated QoS (including IQ-QoS integration) * Adaptative IQ and QoS under dynamic environments * Trust, security and privacy issues in IQ and QoS * Development environments and programming languages for IQ and QoS * IQ and QoS for emerging pervasive computing applications, such as three-dimensional wireless sensor networks (like underwater sensor network), healthcare, and structural health monitoring * Prototype test-bed design, implementation, and field trials Submission Instructions The submitted paper should be in the IEEE standard conference format and should be no more than 6 pages in length. Only electronic submissions in PDF format will be considered. Papers should be submitted via the EasyChair for IQ2S 2009. Detailed submission guidance can be found in the workshop website. All submissions will be peer-reviewed and selected based on their originality, merit, and relevance to the workshop. Accepted papers will be published by the IEEE Computer Society Press in the combined PerCom 2009 workshops proceedings. Based on the success of the preceding WMAN workshops of 2007 back to 2002, the workshop will also be organised for 2009. For the upcoming workshop, we are very happy to introduce WMAN 2009 for the second time being hosted in the context of the bi-annual ITG/GI conference on communication in distributed systems (German: ITG/GI - Fachtagung "Kommunikation in Verteilten Systemen") - see http://www.kivs09.de/. Mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET) show a large interest in application and protocol research. While the basic organization of the routing tasks has been addressed for quite some time, the emerging areas include auto-configuration, security and data privacy, or an efficient use of various resources, such as bandwidth, energy, or memory. Especially driven by the hand-held or mobile devices restrictions, the lack of centralized managers, and a high dynamicity of users, devices, and applications, known solutions to wire-line protocols, mechanisms, and systems cannot be applied directly to MANETs. Therefore, this workshop WMAN’09 combines in a coherent manner questions from the lower radio transmission layer all the way up to the application layer relevant in MANETs. Furthermore, dedicated application scenarios, such as vehicle-to-vehicle communications or submarine communications are of high interest. The questions this workshop aims to discuss are: * How does the ubiquity of personal communication devices enable and support cooperative activities? * What are the technical challenges that must be overcome to achieve seamless cooperation? * What are the challenges in discovering and disseminating content given energy and form factor constraints of mobile devices? The objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers from both academia and industry to foster a discussion on key research challenges in content sharing and dissemination, cooperative activities, mobile search, and security and privacy issues in pervasive environments. Additionally, the workshop forum will provide an opportunity to explore new business models and act as a soundboard for discussing bold new ideas in the area. While the main purpose is to promote discussions in the design of cooperation and sharing architectures, protocols, algorithms, middleware, services, and applications for wireless systems, it also aims at increasing the synergy between academic and industry professionals working in this area. We therefore seek papers that address theoretical, experimental, and work in-progress at all layers of pervasive environments, with the focus on realistic application scenarios. The workshop aims to address cooperation from both an application as well as a system design standpoint. From the application perspective, the workshop encourages submissions of studies of prototypes or real-world systems, including demonstrations of these systems. Cooperation in such applications can take many forms, including multimedia communications, interaction with embedded sensing devices, etc. From the system point of view, the workshop will solicit submissions that discuss architectures for cooperative systems, resource management techniques, security mechanisms, and other middleware or systems approaches for realistic pervasive environments. We will also encourage submissions on "brave new topics" that present futuristic ideas that have never previously been explored. Such networks fall into the fields of mobile ad-hoc networking (MANET) and delay-tolerant networking (DTN).Opportunistic Networks enable user communication in an environment where disconnection and reconnection are common and link performance is extremely dynamic. They are very suitable to support the situation where network infrastructure has limited coverage and users have "islands of connectivity". By taking advantage of device mobility, information can be stored and forwarded over a wireless link when connection 'opportunities' arise (e.g. an appropriate network contact is met). In this view, traditional Internet connectivity can be considered as a special case of connection opportunity. With numerous emerging applications, Opportunistic Networks allow a huge number of devices to communicate end-to-end without requiring any pre-existing infrastructure and are very suitable to support pervasive networking scenarios. Topics of Interest ----------------- Original papers addressing applications and architecture, systems and protocols design, development and analysis, in all areas related to Opportunistic Networking are solicited. Papers that bring out interesting and novel ideas at an early stage are favored over highly-polish journal-style results. With several favorable characteristics, such as dynamic self-organization, self-configuration, self-healing, easy maintenance, high scalability and reliable services, wireless mesh networks have been advocated as a cost-effective approach to support high-speed last mile connectivity and ubiquitous broadband access in the context of home networking, enterprise networking, or community networking. Despite recent advances, and the technical accumulations from more than a decade's research effort in mobile ad hoc networks, many research issues remain in all protocol layers of wireless mesh networks. For example, the introducing of mixed (infrastructure and ad hoc) architecture, multi-radio, multi-channel, and multi-antenna, have brought new challenges in the design of physical, MAC, and routing protocols. New application scenarios, such as all-wireless office, are urging researchers to address enhanced QoS support and various security issues in the design of different protocol layers for wireless mesh networks. This workshop aims to bring together the technologies and researchers who share interest in the area of wireless mesh and ad hoc networks. The main purpose is to promote discussions of research and relevant activities in the design of architectures, protocols, algorithms, services, and applications for wireless networks. It also aims at increasing the synergy between academic and industry professionals working in this area. CALL FOR PAPERS For the reliable performance evaluation of wireless networks, realistic models and credible simulation scenarios are crucial. Recently, in the area of wireless networks, it has been shown that simplistic models for mobility, traffic, and signal propagation yield results that are too optimistic. In order to provide more credible models, traces from specific scenarios need to be acquired and then realistic scenario models need to be developed and validated. We solicit papers on mobility, traffic, propagation, and scenario modelling for various wireless networks including MANETs, DTNs and vehicular networks. Papers on trace measurement architectures and trace characterizations of wireless networks are also welcome. The main purpose of this workshop is to promote further research interests and activities on scenario modelling of wireless networks. IQ and QoS provisioning for pervasive computing is challenging and difficult due to the resource-constrained, dynamic and distributed nature of the system, the weakness under security attacking, and the lack of a holistic design approach which takes into account the different types of resources and their inter-dependencies. The objective of this workshop is to provide a forum to exchange ideas, present results, share experience, and enhance collaborations among researchers, professionals, and application developers in various aspects of IQ and QoS for pervasive computing. Results focused on the analysis and processing aspects of data collected from deployments should be submitted to the IP track, while details on the platforms and tools used in the deployment should be submitted to SPOTS. **************************** Call for Papers *************************** First International Workshop on Quality of Context (QuaCon '09) http://www.quacon09.nexus.uni-stuttgart.de/ 25 - 26 June, 2009 Stuttgart, Germany ************************************************************************ Advances in sensor technology, wireless communication, and mobile devices lead to the proliferation of sensors in our physical environment. At the same time detailed digital models of buildings, towns, or even the globe become widely available. Integrating the huge amount of available sensor data into spatial models results in highly dynamic models of the real world, often called context models. A wide range of applications can substantially benefit from common context models. However, context data is inherently associated with uncertainty, which has to be taken into account by both context management systems and applications. Appropriate ontologies, models, and metrics are needed to specify the quality of context data, including aspects of degradation, consistency, and trust. Those concepts are needed on different levels of abstraction, including the raw sensor data, observable context, as well as the high-level context derived from other context information by means of reasoning techniques. In addition, methods and calculi are required to assess the quality of context data on various levels. For an integrated context-management approach a framework is needed that defines the appropriate abstraction levels and that provides quality mappings between these layers. Other important issues are application-specific quality concepts and methods to handle uncertain context data. If context data is to be presented to human users, appropriate visualizing techniques are required to present the data together with its quality assessments. On the other hand, if applications specify what level of degradation they accept, this information can be used to optimize context management by means of suitable relaxation techniques. Research in context management and in particular context quality requires an interdisciplinary approach. Therefore, the QuaCon Workshop aims to bring together researchers from various fields to discuss approaches to context quality and to make a consolidated contribution towards an integrated way of treating context quality. Topics covered by the workshop include the following: - Models for degradation and consistency of context data - Degradation, spatial ontologies and spatial data mining - Trust in context data - Methods and calculi for context quality assessment - Frameworks and metrics for context quality - Uncertainty in sensor data processing - Quality-aware algorithms for context management - Quality-aware event and stream processing - Uncertainty in reasoning on context data - Application-specific context quality and case studies - Visualization of context quality Submitted papers must not have been previously published or currently submitted for publication elsewhere. All papers will be reviewed by the program committee, and accepted papers will be published in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) Series (pending approval). All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should prepare a Portable Document Format (PDF) version of their full paper. Papers must be no longer than 10 pages and be formatted according to the LNCS guidelines [1]. Papers not adhering to these guidelines or the page limit are subject to rejection without review. Call for Papers =============== 22nd International Conference on Architecture of Computing Systems ARCS 2009 ============================================================================ - System Architecture and Energy Awareness - ============================================ held from March, 10th to March 13th in Delft, The Netherlands ============================================================= Extended Submission deadline October 19th ========================================= The ARCS series of conferences has over 30 years of tradition reporting top notch results in computer architecture and operating systems research. This year's focus is put on energy awareness viewed from two different perspectives. Firstly, this deals with the improvement of computer systems to be as energy-efficient as possible (particularly for specific applications). One can think of heterogeneous multi-core architectures or reconfigurable architectures for this purpose. Secondly, this addresses the usage of computer systems to reduce the energy consumption of other systems, which might lead to problems of communication and cooperation. Both aspects are relevant for the conference. Like the previous conferences in this series, it continues to be an important forum for computer architecture research. The proceedings of ARCS 2009 will be published in the Springer series Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) (http://www.springer.com/lncs). After the conference, authors of selected papers will be invited to submit extended versions of their contributions for publication in a special issue of the Journal of Systems Architecture. Also, a best paper and a best presentation award will be presented at the conference. Wireless sensor networks are aggregates of sensor nodes into sophisticated sensing, computational and communication infrastructures. Started in 2005, the series of UIC conferences has been held in Taipei, Nagasaki, Three Gorges (China), Hong Kong and Oslo. UIC-09 will include a highly selective program of technical papers, accompanied by workshops, panel discussions and keynote speeches. The goal of this special issue is to explore the development of wireless vehicular ad hoc network technologies about communication, networking, and applications. A good communication protocol design can achieve highly reliable, highly scalable, and high performance. In aspect of networking, there are many challenges that how to offer quality of service, build high performance routing, provide mobility management, and create secure vehicular ad hoc networks. VANET safety applications include safety warnings and collision avoidance. This is imperious to improve the non-safety applications and reduce the occurrence of collision. VANETs present a highly active field of research, development, standardization and field trials. Throughout the world, there are many national/international projects in government, industry, and academia devoted to VANETs, for example consortia like VSC (US), C2CCC (Europe) and InternetITS (Japan), standardization efforts like IEEE 802.11p (WAVE) and field trials like the large-scale Vehicle Infrastructure Integration Program (VII) in the US. The special issue solicits high-quality theoretical as well as practical works on a broad range of issues important to the communication, networking, and applications for vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs). CALL FOR PAPERS For the reliable performance evaluation of wireless networks, realistic models and credible simulation scenarios are crucial. Recently, in the area of wireless networks, it has been shown that simplistic models for mobility, traffic, and signal propagation yield results that are too optimistic. In order to provide more credible models, traces from specific scenarios need to be acquired and then realistic scenario models need to be developed and validated. We solicit papers on mobility, traffic, propagation, and scenario modelling for various wireless networks including MANETs, DTNs and vehicular networks. Papers on trace measurement architectures and trace characterizations of wireless networks are also welcome. The main purpose of this workshop is to promote further research interests and activities on scenario modelling of wireless networks. It is also aimed at increasing the synergy between academic and industrial researchers working in this area. We are interested in experimental, systems-related, theoretical, and work-in-progress papers in all aspects of wireless network scenarios. Recently, a cross-layer design has become a popular topic in which more and more researchers are engaged. That leads to a lot of cross-layer design proposals for wireless networks. This special issue is intended to foster state-of-the-art research pertaining to cross-layer design in the area of future generation wireless networks. The emphasis of this special issue will be on cross-layer protocol interactions and design of cross-layer optimized techniques. The issue will focus on a range of future generation wireless networks cross-layer design related topics including network architectures, mobility management, session mobility, security mechanism, services, and novel applications associated with their utilization, and hybrid routing protocols for mobile wireless networks, e.g., cellular/WLAN/WiMAX/ad hoc networks. From a number of angles it appears that we have reached a point in the impressive development cycle of the Internet that now requires some major change. However, research and development in these areas is still at an early stage and the space of potential solutions is far from being explored. The International Workshop on the Network of the Future (Future-Net 09) is a platform for both clean-slate as well as evolutionary approaches for a redesign of the Internet. It will uniquely bring together approaches driven from mobile and wireless demands, network virtualization, network self-management, content and sensor networking and discuss these from both a technical as well as socio-economic perspective. Topics of Interest: We solicit contributions that report early results addressing research challenges in topics related to the network of the future. Because of all these architectural and performance properties, the observation and reverse-engineering of successful processes in organic, inorganic, and animal systems in nature, has drawn in recent years the attention of many researchers and engineers working in the fields of parallel and distributed systems, and, more in particular, in telecommunications networks. In these domains, nature has provided basic inspiration for the definition of a number of novel algorithms and computational frameworks able to deal effectively with the challenges of current networked systems, which show a growing structural and computational complexity and are made of a large number of highly dynamic and heterogeneous components. The aim of the workshop is to provide a forum to present cutting edge research on nature-inspired approaches to problems arising in the design, control, protection, and management of network systems, and to outline new trends in parallel nature-inspired computation for the solution of complex problems. The Second International Workshop on Applications of Ad hoc and Sensor Networks (AASNET '09) (http://faculty.kfupm.edu.sa/coe/tarek/aasnet09.htm) is held in conjunction with AINA 2009 23nd IEEE International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications in Bradford, UK, May 26-29, 2009. Wireless mobile ad hoc and sensor network nodes have limited battery capacity. Hence, they tend to be energy conservative. Many MAC, routing protocols, scheduling scheme were proposed to promote energy conservation without degrading the performance of the network. CALL FOR PAPERS For the reliable performance evaluation of wireless networks, realistic models and credible simulation scenarios are crucial. Recently, in the area of wireless networks, it has been shown that simplistic models for mobility, traffic, and signal propagation yield results that are too optimistic. In order to provide more credible models, traces from specific scenarios need to be acquired and then realistic scenario models need to be developed and validated. We solicit papers on mobility, traffic, propagation, and scenario modelling for various wireless networks including MANETs, DTNs and vehicular networks. Papers on trace measurement architectures and trace characterizations of wireless networks are also welcome. The main purpose of this workshop is to promote further research interests and activities on scenario modelling of wireless networks. It is also aimed at increasing the synergy between academic and industrial researchers working in this area. We are interested in experimental, systems-related, theoretical, and work-in-progress papers in all aspects of wireless network scenarios. - Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message ----------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers for Special Issue on Service-Oriented Broadband Wireless Network Architecture IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine In the past few years, broadband wireless networks have been very attractive for providing broadband access because of quick and cost-effective deployments. In addition to the features of high data rate and large coverage, broadband wireless networks also promise to rapidly provide broadband access to locations in the world's rural and developing areas where broadband is currently unavailable, as well as competing for urban market shares. Till now, most existing efforts have been focused the basic "access" capability. However, to successfully deploy and operate broadband wireless networks, a crucial issue must be addressed: "How to support a variety of services and applications within the broadband wireless networks?" For instance, there is an increasing need to efficiently support applications such as voice over IP (VoIP), video streaming, music downloading, IP TV and many others. Apparently, existing "access-oriented" design may not be the good answer because of the following reasons. (1) Efficiency: Existing design may not be able to fully exploit the potential of wireless networks because a customer always needs to connect to an access point, which is very likely a bottleneck. (2) Quality of service: For many existing designs that are developed to gain Internet access, the customer may not be able to obtain the desired quality-of-service (QoS) because all services are provided by the Internet, which can only provide best-effort services in practice. (3) Incentive of the service provider: One critical issue that has been largely ignored is that the access-oriented design may not be fair to the service provider who develops the infrastructure, because the service provider can only earn the access fee, which is usually paid monthly and is relatively low compared to the deployment cost. To address the above issues, the service-oriented design on the network layer has been proposed recently and has gained increasing interests from both the research and industrial communities. With such a momentum, there is an urgent need to better understand as well as to keep track of cutting edge research on the service-oriented broadband wireless network architecture. We plan this special issue to help address that need, as well as to help researchers looking to jump on the bandwagon. Therefore, the special issue will focus on recent advances as well as survey papers in service-oriented broadband wireless network architecture. Scope of Contributions The papers in this feature topic will focus on state-of-the-art research in various aspects of service-oriented broadband wireless network architectures. We solicit papers covering various topics of interest that include, but not limited to the following: - Broadband wireless network services and applications - 3G LTE services and applications - WiMAX services and applications - Service-oriented wireless mesh network architecture - Cross-layer approaches for service-oriented broadband wireless networks - Theoretical capacity analysis on service-oriented wireless networks - Topology control for emerging multihop wireless networks - Routing for service-oriented wireless networks - Optimal scheduling and medium access control for broadband wireless applications - Service orientation and call admission control in broadband wireless networks - QoS provision through interconnected wired and wireless segments - Security in broadband wireless networks - Reliability in multihop wireless networks - Network coding and physical-layer network coding in broadband wireless networks Articles should be tutorial in nature and should be written in a style comprehensible to readers outside the specialty of the article. However, papers presenting original contributions will also be considered, as long as the presentation is accessible and the paper length is kept within the appropriate limits. Articles should not exceed 4500 words. Figures and tables should be limited to a combined total of six. For manuscript submission, authors should follow the IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine manuscript format described in the "Information for Authors" at http://www.comsoc.org/pubs/pcm/sub_guidelines.html. There will be one round of reviews and acceptance will be limited to the papers needing only moderate revisions. Therefore, the quality of initially submitted manuscripts is very important. Throughout the world, many national or international projects in government, industry, and academia have been devoted to the establishment of ambitious research programs, such as the European eSafety initiative, the German Ministry of Education and Research sponsored Wheels project, the US programs derived from the Intelligent Vehicle Initiative, and the Japanese InternetITS and AHS programs. The field of wireless vehicular communications can be typically identified as vehicle-to-person communications, vehicle-to-infrastructure communications, vehicle-to-vehicle communications, and vehicular communication networks. The combination of unique features of wireless vehicular communications and networking issues opens new opportunities for many interesting research areas, for example, real time safety applications, and intelligent diver information services. PAPERS Papers must report new results substantiated by experimentation, simulation, or analysis. All submissions will be handled electronically and must be in PDF format. Paper submissions for regular papers must be limited to 10 pages (US letter size, 8.5 x 11 inches) including text, figures and references. The font size must be at least 10 points. Accepted papers will be published in the symposium proceedings. All submitted papers would be judged based on their quality through double-blind reviewing, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers. Authors' names must NOT appear in the paper or in the PDF file. Submitted papers must not be currently under review for any other publication. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- International Workshop on Synergies in Communications and Localization - SyCoLo 2009 - www.SyCoLo2009.org in conjunction with ICC 2009, Dresden, Germany June 18, 2009 ----------------------------------------------------------------------- The main objective of this Workshop is to show how wireless communications and navigation/localization techniques can benefit from each other. With respect to these synergies the Workshop aims at the following fundamental questions: - How can navigation systems benefit from existing communication systems? - How can communication systems benefit from localization information of mobile terminals? This Workshop aims at inspiring the development of new position-aware procedures to enhance the efficiency of communication networks. On the other hand it also wants to encourage new positioning algorithms based on (outdoor and/or indoor) wireless communication and/or on satellite navigation systems. This workshop is jointly organized by the FP7 EU research projects WHERE (<http://www.ict-where.eu>) and NEWCOM++ (<http://www.newcom-project.eu:8080/Plone>). We invite you to submit your original full papers on the most recent results and technology trends in the fields of: - Hybrid positioning using both wireless communication and satellite navigation systems; - Resource management with localization information; - Location-aware PHY/MAC algorithms/procedures; - Indoor positioning combined with short range communications; - Signal Processing techniques for (seamless) indoor/outdoor localization. However, various applications and media formats may have different quality evaluation criteria and control parameters. For example, scalability and interactivity are very crucial performance metrics for 3D graphics scene model representation and delivery, while they may not be that important for some other multimedia applications. Thus, there is a strong impetus to develop new quality evaluation methodologies for various media formats under different multimedia application scenarios. Recently, cross-layer design has become a popular design methodology for enhancing Quality-of-Service (QoS) over various multimedia communications systems. However, most existing cross-layer designs for QoS provisioning in multimedia communications are mainly focused on improving network-oriented QoS such as throughput, delay, and jitter, while the multimedia application-oriented QoS have not been fully considered in the existing cross-layer design optimization. Therefore, quality-driven multimedia communications need to be extensively investigated under various communications scenarios involving audio, video, VoIP, image, and/or graphics. Under such a background, it is very important to highlight the importance of quality-driven cross-layer design as one of the enabling technologies for the next-generation quality-aware service-oriented multimedia networks. The aim of this special issue is to bring together the state-of-the-art research contributions that address the various aspects of quality-driven cross-layer designs for multimedia communications.
