The need for efficient merging of the wired and wireless infrastructure as well as the new multimedia services and applications of next generation networks call for novel network architectures, protocols and traffic-related mechanisms. WWIC addresses research topics such as the design and evaluation of protocols, the dynamics of the integration, the performance tradeoffs, the need for new performance metrics, and cross-layer interactions. The goal of the conference is to present high-quality results in the field, and to provide a framework for research collaboration through focused discussions that will designate future research efforts and directions. In this context, the program committee will accept only a limited number of papers that meet the criteria of originality, presentation quality and topic relevance. WWIC is a single-track conference which has reached, within 6 years, the highest level of quality, which is reflected both in the level of participation as well as the acceptance ratio and the amount and quality of submitted papers. CONFERENCE TOPICS The conference objectives will be pursued through highly technical sessions organized thematically and keynote talks offered by recognized experts. CALL FOR PAPERS First International Workshop on Medical Applications Networking (MAN 2009) In conjunction with ICC 2009, Dresden, Germany Technically Co-Sponsored by IEEE Communication Society http://man.it.ubi.pt The International Workshop on Medical Applications Networking (MAN) provides a forum for discussion of recent developments, bringing together researchers, scientists, engineers, academicians and students all around the world to share the latest updates on new technologies and applications that would shape the next generation of networks and systems related with medicine and healthcare. Communications and network technologies play an important role in medical solutions and healthcare. New solutions continue to be developed to create safer health care environments. The field of wireless vehicular communications can be typically identified as vehicle-to-person communications, vehicle-to-infrastructure communications, vehicle-to-vehicle communications, and vehicular communication networks. The combination of unique features of wireless vehicular communications and networking issues opens new opportunities for many interesting research areas, for example, real time safety applications, and intelligent diver information services. One could argue that MMOGs are the “killer app” that can bring Virtual Reality into the realm of eSociety, creating an environment with millions of people taking part in various activities and daily life, but electronically. This is evident from the fact that real companies are opening “virtual branches” in these online gaming platforms, such as clothing manufacturers, IBM, and CNN, to name a few companies present in Second Life. Virtual currencies such as Second Life’s Linden (or L$) are already being exchanged for real-world money, as are virtual items and virtual properties that are sold for real money. Massive numbers of users spend their time with their fellow players at online games like EverQuest, World of Warcraft, and Second Life. World of Warcraft, for example, has over ten million (10,000,000) users with a peak of over 500,000 players interacting at a given time in the digital world. There is no doubt that MMOGs have a great potential to become the corner stone of an eSociety platform bringing the massiveness of the real society into the digital realm. This special issue will cover enabling technologies and systems for MMOGs, as well as applications of MMOGs outside of gaming. The focus will be mostly on the “massive” aspect of games, but high-quality papers in real-time interactive multiuser games (albeit not massive) will also be considered if they address issues that can benefit massive games too. Hence, topics include, but are not limited to: * Networking support for massive number of players * Networked games (non-massive) * P2P architectures for better scalability * Zoning techniques, Area of Interest Management, and seamless player movement * Application-Layer Multicasting for massive user support * Performance evaluation and traffic/player pattern measurements * Audio/video conferencing in games * Latency compensation techniques * Content adaptation for players on heterogeneous receivers * Cheating: detection, avoidance, and repair * Multiuser mobile games * Case studies about applications of gaming in other disciplines such as business, pedagogy, biology, psychology, etc. Only papers that have not been published and/or submitted elsewhere will be considered. Firstly due to its intrinsic principle of fixed resource allocation that leads to a supposed spectrum scarcity, later revealed to be a question of non-efficient utilization. Secondly comes into play the need of introducing new wireless applications and services, which have experienced a huge growth in the last couple of decades, and are now supposed to cope with a multitude of already deployed standards. Both scenarios motivate the use of dynamic spectrum access in order to turn primary licensed networks into dynamic spectrum access networks (DSANs). This lends itself to cognitive radio, an enabling technology that will benefit several types of players and help to implement a more efficient approach regarding spectrum requirements in the future. Unlike mobile ad hoc and sensor networks, the mesh nodes in a WMN are stationary and have access to unlimited power. Typically, mobile clients connect to the mesh nodes and use the backbone to communicate with one another over large distances and with nodes on the Internet through a gateway. One of the distinct characteristics of WMNs is that the mesh nodes can employ multiple radios and utilize multiple channels which thereby bring a potential to improve the throughput and bandwidth of the network. In addition, directional and multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antennas can be employed. Such technologies can be exploited for end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) provisioning that can be used to offer some level of service differentiation to facilitate multimedia/real-time data communication, Video on Demand, VoIP, etc. over WMNs. Prior research on QoS provisioning in mobile ad hoc and sensor networks has mostly addressed the challenges under the single channel paradigm. While the research community has recently started to study the QoS challenges in WMNs, the current focus has largely been on bandwidth guarantees for traffic going out of the WMN to the Internet via the gateway(s). Therefore, further research is needed to provide QoS guarantees for intra-WMN traffic not only on bandwidth but also on delay, delay jitter and reliability so that WMNs can be realized as a technology in the near future. The goal of this special issue is to collect papers in the area of QoS provisioning in multi-radio, multi-channel, multi-hop WMNs. We solicit papers which will address QoS challenges under multiple radios and channels, provide the foundation for applications such as Video on Demand, teleconferencing and VoIP, and deal with channel assignment and routing problems simultaneously. The INSS provides a forum to hear about the latest developments in these areas, to exchange ideas, and to start up collaborations within these fields and between industry and academia. Call for Scientific Contributions --------------------------------- INSS 2009 is the sixth annual conference in the series, and features a highly selective technical program. We invite outstanding research papers from the field of sensor technology, wireless networking, or application of networked sensor systems. The conference especially encourages submissions that investigate research issues shared between all three areas. INSS 2009 invites the submission of regular, short, and industry papers. All submissions will be peer-reviewed and evaluated on the basis of originality, significance of contribution, technical correctness, and presentation. Papers submitted must not be under simultaneous review for any other conference, journal, workshop, or other publication. All accepted papers will be published from the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE), and also from IEEE Explore. Regular/Short Paper Track --------------------------------- Regular papers must be 4-8 pages long (two-column format) and include an abstract of 100-150 words. Short papers must be 2-4 pages long (two-column format) and include an abstract of 100-150 words. All papers should be formatted according to the "IEEE transactions" format. Short papers are suitable for interactive discussions; the presenters of accepted short papers are given short oral presentation times. This edition, which builds on the success of the first conference (168 participants from 31 countries), will focus on all aspects of simulation modeling and analysis. High quality papers are sought on simulation tools, methodologies, applications, and practices. -- TOPICS -- The aim of the conference is to bring academic and industry researchers together with practitioners (from both the simulation community and from the numerous simulation user communities). The conference will address current and future trends in simulation techniques, models and practices, and foster interdisciplinary collaborative research in this area. While the main focus of the conference is on simulation tools, the conference also encourages the submission of broader theoretical and practical research contributions. General areas include, but are not limited to: ** Simulation Techniques and Methodologies: Discrete Event, Web-based, Agent-based, Petri Nets, Fluid-flow simulation, Bond Graphs, Simulation-based Scheduling, Simulation languages, Simulation interoperability techniques, etc. ** Tools: NS-2/3, OPNET, ATDI ICS, Qualnet, OMNET++, NIIST, Dymola, Matlab/Simulink, open source tools, etc. The principal points of focus for the conference are computer networks, computer systems, and interdisciplinary work bridging various areas. Following in the footsteps of past editions of ACM CoNEXT Student Workshop, ACM CoNEXT 2008 Student Workshop will provide a platform for students in the areas of computer networks and data communication to publicize their ongoing research work through posters. The advance in mobile wireless communication technology and the increasing number of mobile users, extend the arena of P2P computing to encompass mobile devices and wireless networks. The special characteristics of mobile environments, such as highly variable connectivity, disconnection, location-dependency, resource contraints, and diversity in wireless networks as well as carrier-grade performance requirements bring new challenges for research in mobile P2P communication and computing. MP2P'09 is intended to serve as a continuing forum for scientists and engineers in academia and industry to exchange and discuss their experiences, new ideas, and research results about all aspects of mobile P2P computing and communications. It will address the challenges, technologies, and architectures leading to real-world solutions that provide users with direct access and control of their critical peer- based information and services, regardless of location or device. The principal theme of MP2P'09 is the peer-to-peer paradigm as used in mobile ad hoc networks (MANETS), sensor networks, and large-scale heterogeneous overlays. Topics of particular interest include, but are not limited to: - Peer-to-peer overlays for MANETs and sensor networks - Hybrid P2P architectures for integrated MANETs and wide-area networks - Large-scale heterogeneous P2P systems - Mobility in federated overlay architectures - Impact of network mobility on P2P systems and services (mobile IP / MANET) - P2P-based information sensing and fusion - MP2P performance & measurement studies - Semantic routing & overlay routing in MP2P - Delay tolerant MP2P systems - Resource and service discovery in MP2P - Resource exchange mechanisms in MP2P - Peer access and control in mobile environment - Data exchange and rendering techniques for mobile P2P devices - Secure communication protocols for MP2P - Nature-inspired algorithms for MP2P - Novel MP2P applications & services - Theoretical issues on mobile information diffusion - MP2P SIP - MP2P messaging systems, monitoring systems, searching systems, games, etc. - Location dependent MP2P services - MP2P over different bearer services: 2.5/3G (GPRS/UMTS) / 802.11 (WLAN) - MP2P & operator/provider requirements - Reliability and carrier-grade performance of MP2P services Paper Submission: ----------------- Papers must be written in English and should not exceed 5 pages in IEEE proceedings style. Our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this CFP. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- International Workshop on Collaboration and Cognition in Next Generation Networks (CoNGN'2008) www.criticalnet.org/congn2008 In conjunction with CollaborateCom'2008 Orlando, Florida, November, 2008 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The rapid developments in the Internet and emerging alternative network protocol stacks promise unprecedented levels of sharing of information, computing and communication resources through distributed collaborations of diverse network elements. Collaborative networking comprises complex systems with many tunable interdependent components, parameters and network performance objectives. To realize their potential, collaborative networks need to provide effective and efficient support for ubiquitous integration of heterogeneous technologies such as mobile devices and infrastructures, web services, grid computing systems, various operating environments, and diverse COTS products. In addition, research is needed to provide network cognition, which entails learning and reasoning by the diverse network elements to dynamically select the ideal network operating state and adapt to varying network and group contexts in order to optimize end-to-end performance of the network as a whole. Moreover, networking aspects such as autonomicity, security, trust, management, quality-of-service support and localization need to be cognizant of group dynamics. Aparently, numerous challenges face the realization of collaborative networking. These challenges include balancing the competing goals of collaboration, autonomy and security; allowing mobile users and groups to seamlessly communicate throughout multiple heterogeneous networks and enjoy multiparty multimedia applications while on the move between different administrative domains; developing new APIs to enable applications to detect available access networks and learn their characteristics, thus becoming aware of location, context, and quality-of-service; and carefully optimizing network parameters across the entire protocol stack. The key goal of this workshop is to foster active interactions among diverse researchers and practitioners, and generate added momentum towards research addressing collaborative and cognitive networking aspects. The purpose of the 6th International Conference on Autonomic Computing and Communications (ICAC-09) is to bring together researchers and practitioners addressing all aspects of self-management in computing systems and applications. In doing so, we hope to further build and nurture a community that can work together to realize the vision of large-scale self-managing systems. The conference builds on previous highly influential meetings in New York, Seattle, Dublin, Jacksonville and Chicago. Papers are solicited on a broad array of topics of relevance to autonomic computing, particularly those that bear on connections and relationships among different areas of research or report on prototype systems or experiences. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Autonomic computing systems or prototype systems that exhibit self-monitoring, self-configuration, self-optimization, self-healing, and/or self-protection. * Fundamental science of self-managing systems: understanding, controlling, or exploiting emergent behavior, fault-tolerance, machine learning, control theory, predictive methods and their use to automate manual operations and enforce behavior. * Software engineering principles and architectures for self-managing systems, based on interoperable Grid Services, agent-based systems, Web Services, model-based systems or novel paradigms such as biological, economic or social. * System-level technologies, middleware or services that entail interactions among two or more components of self-managing systems in standalone, distributed, cluster, and Grid computing environments (e.g., health monitoring, dependency analysis, problem localization or remediation, workload management, and provisioning). * Toolkits, environments, models, languages, runtime and compiler technologies for building self-managing components, systems or applications. * Specific self-managing components, such as server, storage, network, data center or specific application elements. Emphasis should be placed on techniques or lessons that may generalize to other components. * Management topics, such as specification and modeling of service-level agreements, negotiation/conversation support, behavior enforcement, etc., tie in with IT governance, and interaction with legacy systems. * Interfaces to autonomic systems, including user interfaces, interfaces for monitoring and controlling behavior, techniques for defining, distributing, and understanding policies. * Experiences with autonomic system or component prototypes: measurements, evaluations, or analyses of system behavior, user studies, experiences with large-scale deployments of self-managing systems or applications. * Applications of autonomics to real and complex problems in science, engineering, business and society. PAPER/POSTER SUBMISSIONS AND PUBLICATION Full papers (a maximum of 10 pages in length) and posters (2 pages) are invited on a wide variety of topics relating to autonomic computing as indicated above. All manuscripts will be reviewed and judged on merits including correctness, originality, technical strength, quality of presentation, and relevance to the conference themes. Submitted papers must include original work, and may not be under consideration for another conference or journal. They should also not be under review or be submitted to another forum during the ICAC-09 review process. Authors should submit full papers or posters electronically (PDF or postscript) via EDAS using the link on the ICAC-09 conference web site. Formatting instructions will also be posted at the web site. Accepted papers and posters will appear in proceedings published by IEEE Computer Society (to be confirmed), which will be distributed at the conference. WORKSHOPS, DEMONSTRATIONS AND EXHIBITION ICAC-09 welcomes proposals for co-located workshops on specific topics of general interest to the autonomic computing community. Workshops are expected to publish proceedings, and should cover areas that may not be properly addressed in the main scientific program. ICAC-09 will also feature a demonstration and exhibition session consisting of prototypes and technology artifacts such as demonstrating autonomic software or autonomic computing principles. INDUSTRY SESSION A singular value of ICAC is the confluence of top researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry. One could argue that MMOGs are the �killer app� that can bring Virtual Reality into the realm of eSociety, creating an environment with millions of people taking part in various activities and daily life, but electronically. This is evident from the fact that real companies are opening �virtual branches� in these online gaming platforms, such as clothing manufacturers, IBM, and CNN, to name a few companies present in Second Life. Virtual currencies such as Second Life�s Linden (or L$) are already being exchanged for real-world money, as are virtual items and virtual properties that are sold for real money. Massive numbers of users spend their time with their fellow players at online games like EverQuest, World of Warcraft, and Second Life. World of Warcraft, for example, has over ten million (10,000,000) users with a peak of over 500,000 players interacting at a given time in the digital world. There is no doubt that MMOGs have a great potential to become the corner stone of an eSociety platform bringing the massiveness of the real society into the digital realm. This special issue will cover enabling technologies and systems for MMOGs, as well as applications of MMOGs outside of gaming. The focus will be mostly on the �massive� aspect of games, but high-quality papers in real-time interactive multiuser games (albeit not massive) will also be considered if they address issues that can benefit massive games too. Hence, topics include, but are not limited to: * Networking support for massive number of players * Networked games (non-massive) * P2P architectures for better scalability * Zoning techniques, Area of Interest Management, and seamless player movement * Application-Layer Multicasting for massive user support * Performance evaluation and traffic/player pattern measurements * Audio/video conferencing in games * Latency compensation techniques * Content adaptation for players on heterogeneous receivers * Cheating: detection, avoidance, and repair * Multiuser mobile games * Case studies about applications of gaming in other disciplines such as business, pedagogy, biology, psychology, etc. Only papers that have not been published and/or submitted elsewhere will be considered. However, delegation models in these areas suffer from incomplete understanding, because research in such fields has generally dealt with relatively simple network settings. As we revisit Conway's Law, we find evidence of important interplays between communication, organization and product design structures. The possible combination of several networks into a single complex network brings new cross-cutting concerns. Therefore, research issues and solutions may be gathered and tried from diverse fields such as ad hoc networks, workflow management, artificial intelligence, collaborative software development, CSCW, etc. This workshop provides a forum for exchanging problems, methods, models, and insights about delegation in complex networks. It aims at bringing together researchers in the areas of social networks, communication networks and product design in search for common understanding of the subject of delegation in complex networks. Original papers addressing applications, scenarios, models, methods, and architecture are solicited. Papers that bring out interesting and novel ideas at an early stage are favored over highly-polish journal-style results. Our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this email. 1st Call for Papers 22nd International Conference on Archticture of Computing Systems ARCS 2009 - System Architecture and Energy Awareness - held from March, 10th to March 13th in Delft, The Netherlands Submission deadline October 10th The ARCS series of conferences has over 30 years of tradition reporting top notch results in computer architecture and operating systems research. This year's focus is energy awareness viewed from two different ways. Firstly, this deals with the improvement of computer systems to be as energy efficient as possible (particularly for specific applications). One can think of heterogeneous multi-core architectures or reconfigurable architectures for this purpose. Secondly, this addresses the usage of computer systems to reduce the energy consumption of other systems, which might lead to problems of communication and cooperation. Both aspects are relevant for the conference. Like the previous conferences in this series, it continues to be an important forum for computer architecture research. In 2009 ARCS will be hosted by the Delft University of Technology, which has one of the leading information technology schools in Europe. The proceedings of ARCS 2009 will be published in the Springer Lecture Notes on Computer Science (LNCS) series (pending). After the conference, authors of selected papers will be invited to submit an extended version of their contribution for publication in a special issue of the Journal of Systems Architecture. Call for Scientific Contributions --------------------------------- INSS 2009 is the sixth annual conference in the series, and features a highly selective technical program. We invite outstanding research papers from the field of sensor technology, wireless networking, or application of networked sensor systems. The conference especially encourages submissions that investigate research issues shared between all three areas. INSS 2009 invites the submission of regular, short, and industry papers. All submissions will be peer-reviewed and evaluated on the basis of originality, significance of contribution, technical correctness, and presentation. All accepted papers will be published from the Society of Instrument and Control Engineers (SICE), and also from IEEE Explore. While a single sensor network typically provides access to information of a limited geographical area and selected types of sensor data, a GSN provides an application with uniform and transparent access to a multitude of individual sensor networks that may be geographically dispersed, aggregating and correlating different types of data as appropriate for the application. The challenges imposed by global sensor networks are relevant to many fields in computer communications and distributed systems such as sensor networks, complex event and stream processing, pervasive computing, and P2P overlays. This workshop intends to bring together researchers and practitioners working in relevant fields in order to share ideas, challenges and visions on Global Sensor Networks as well as to foster new cooperation. WORKSHOP TOPICS GSN09 is looking for contributions related but not limited to the following list of topics in the domain of Global Sensor Networks: - Sensor network protocols - Complex event processing - Distributed stream processing - P2P overlays - Middleware - Security - Query processing and optimization - Quality of service - Applications SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Papers should be submitted in PDF format via the workshop page. 6th IEEE Consumer Communications & Networking Conference CCNC 2009 10 - 13 January 2009 in Las Vegas, Nevada. CCNC 2009 will present the latest approaches and technical solutions in the area of home networking, consumer networking, enabling technologies such as middleware, multimedia and novel applications and services. The 6th IEEE CCNC conference is soliciting papers for Short Papers. CALL FOR PAPERS: First Workshop on Global Sensor Networks (GSN 09) Collocated with KiVS 09 in Kassel, Germany http://ipvs.informatik.uni-stuttgart.de/vs/gsn09 March 6th, 2009 WORKSHOP SCOPE Global sensor networks (GSN) are an emergent research area aiming to offer applications easy and efficient access to sensor data at the scale of billions of sensing devices. While a single sensor network typically provides access to information of a limited geographical area and selected types of sensor data, a GSN provides an application with uniform and transparent access to a multitude of individual sensor networks that may be geographically dispersed, aggregating and correlating different types of data as appropriate for the application. The challenges imposed by global sensor networks are relevant to many fields in computer communications and distributed systems such as sensor networks, complex event and stream processing, pervasive computing, and P2P overlays. This workshop intends to bring together researchers and practitioners working in relevant fields in order to share ideas, challenges and visions on Global Sensor Networks as well as to foster new cooperation. WORKSHOP TOPICS GSN09 is looking for contributions related but not limited to the following list of topics in the domain of Global Sensor Networks: - Sensor network protocols - Complex event processing - Distributed stream processing - P2P overlays - Middleware - Security - Query processing and optimization - Quality of service - Applications SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Papers should be submitted in PDF format via the workshop page. IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Biomedicine (T-ITB) CALL FOR PAPERS Special Issue: Affective and Pervasive Computing for Healthcare Starting in the 1960s emotion and affective phenomenon research has entered an Emotion Renaissance era due to new findings establishing the universality of emotions across the human species along with their evolutionary adaptive and functional role in 'rational' intelligence (e.g. memory, decision-making), social intelligence (e.g. communication, adaptation). In the past decade, additional studies such as the one related in Descarte's Error (Damasio, 1994), revealed surprising results about the nervous system organization, suggesting that emotions and affective processes might play an even more important role in intelligence, health recovery and prevention, and overall well-being than ever suspected. These findings on emotions and affects from psychology, neuroscience and sociology call for innovation in information and communications technology for enabling, and facilitating intelligent interpretation of affective health data; decision support systems for diagnostic, computer assisted health care; remote guidance and virtual reality applications in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; privacy security and trust necessary for user acceptance of technologies; human-computer interfacing and usability engineering; novel patient modelling; and multimodal intelligent affective user interfaces. This special issue will focus on the novel and practical ways, and solid contributions, to improve affective computing and pervasive technologies. We welcome papers that focus on novel applications of wireless telemedicine,of embedded sensor and actuators for affective processing, novel user interfaces and patient-modeling for use by caregivers and/or patients in a variety of health care domains, virtual reality and virtual environments for phychotherapeutic diagnostic, treatment, and support/assistance coaching. We also encourage surveys of available technologies, and reporting on user experiences. Papers that do not focus on affective social processing for healthcare and applications will not be reviewed. Specific interests are in (but not limited to) the following areas: . Network architectures for wireless telemedicine . Mobile service platform for continuity of healthcare . Privacy and security in affective/pervasive healthcare . Wireless and pervasive networks for telemedicine . Autonomic wireless sensor networks . Body area networks .
