Designing complex communication networks of the future needs a deep understanding of the interplay between the physical-, the communication- and the social networks involved. An understanding of such interdependency can only be achieved by closer interaction between Network Scientists, Communication Network Designers, and Social and Behavioral Scientists. The goal of this workshop is to a provide a forum where this diverse group of researchers can meet and exchange ideas that will lead to deeper insights into the design of robust, efficient and complex communication networks of the future. Visionary, early-stage works that are rigorously presented and can steer discussion to new topics are particularly welcome. We are actively encouraging researchers to share their views, research proposals and solutions for multimedia applications over wireless networks. Since the first workshop edition in 2006, the proliferation of wireless access technologies and multimedia applications over IP networks is leading to a growing interest in the convergence between wireless networks and multimedia applications. However, the strict requirements of multimedia applications, the unreliability of wireless media and the cost of wireless resources make this convergence very challenging. MediaWiN2009 offers the opportunity to leading researchers, industry professionals, and academics around the world to meet, present their work, and discuss the latest advances about multimedia services over wireless technology. All accepted papers will be included in the ISCC 2009 Proceedings, will be available on IEEE Xplore, and will be professionally indexed by the IEEE Computer Society's Conference Publishing Service. The INSS provides a forum to hear about the latest developments in these areas, to exchange ideas, and to start up collaborations within these fields and between industry and academia. Call for Scientific Contributions --------------------------------- INSS 2009 is the sixth annual conference in the series, and features a highly selective technical program. We invite outstanding research papers from the field of sensor technology, wireless networking, or application of networked sensor systems. The conference especially encourages submissions that investigate research issues shared between all three areas. INSS 2009 invites the submission of regular, short, and industry papers. All submissions will be peer-reviewed and evaluated on the basis of originality, significance of contribution, technical correctness, and presentation. This new scenario asks for effec- tive solutions to design, develop, and maintain novel ubiquitous services notwithstanding abrupt changes and challenging depend- ability requirements imposed by the highly heterogeneous and er- ror-prone mobile provisioning environment. However, currently de- ployed mobile systems are often too inflexible and unable to rapidly adapt to change and this in turn leads to situations where quality-of-service and quality-of-experience are strongly and negatively affected. To overcome the intrinsic limitations of mobile devices and envi- ronments, a variety of research studies have produced supporting methods, proof-of-concept prototypes, and disciplines. As an ex- ample, Resilience, or "the ability of the network to provide and maintain an acceptable level of service in the face of various faults and challenges to normal operation", is being recognized more and more as a fundamental attribute for truly effective mo- bile and ubiquitous services of today and tomorrow. However, it is still unclear whether current solutions can satisfy the chal- lenging adaptability and dependability requirements of the emerg- ing mobile ubiquitous services, such as mobile commerce, wireless control of robots, healthcare computing, and video-surveillance. The ambition and mission of ADAMUS is to put on the foreground all above issues and to foster the exchange of ideas and lively discussion in order: to devise conceptual models and paradigms for change tolerance; to propose mechanisms to model, design, and develop mobile ubiquitous systems; to provide analytical and sim- ulation tools to measure system ability to withstand faults and to optimally re-adjust to new environments; to develop scalable, maintainable, cost-effective middleware infrastructures able to support and ease the development of adaptive and dependable mo- bile ubiquitous services. Building on the success of the last two editions, ADAMUS 2009 aims at serving as a meeting ground and common platform of dis- cussion for research and industrial bodies in the field of adap- tive and dependable mobile ubiquitous systems. In particular, the focus of this Workshop edition will be on service continuity de- fined as the ability to grant continuous distribution of mobile ubiquitous service despite the occurrence of potentially signifi- cant and sudden changes or faults in the infrastructure and the surrounding environment. Researchers and practitioners are en- couraged to participate with high quality papers able to identify open issues, to discuss the limits and/or advantages of existing solutions, or to propose original and innovative techniques for adaptive and dependable applications over mobile environments. The main topics of the Workshop include, but are not limited to the following: * Dependability and adaptation requirements and open issues for mobile ubiquitous systems; * Resilience software engineering for mobile systems and services; * Design principles, models, and techniques for realizing dependa- ble and adaptive mobile ubiquitous systems; * Context data provisioning and modelling, and context-based infr- astructures; * Human-machine interaction and usability; * Multi-device and highly heterogeneous ubiquitous systems; * Cross-layer adaptation techniques; * End-to-end approaches to the quality of experience of mobile services; * Autonomous systems for adaptation and dependability; * Mobile-enabled middleware architectures and standards for heter- ogeneous wireless networks; * Dependability and scalability of web technologies to ubiquitous systems; * Architectures for resource and network monitoring and adaptation to networks conditions; * Dependability measurement studies of mobile systems and services. PAPER SUBMISSION __________________________________________________________________ ADAMUS 2009 invites authors to submit original and unpublished work. Papers must be written in English and should not exceed 6 pages in ACM double-column proceedings style. All submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should submit a PostScript or PDF file through the submission Web site ([4]http://www.adamus.ua.ac.be/). Hello, dear members of the ITG Working Groups 521 and 524, of the Extended Executive Committee of KUVS, of the Members of the Interest Group MMB, of the Institute IKR, the International Teletraffic Congress (ITC) is by far the most experienced scientific and engineering conference dealing with performance modelling, traffic measurements and quality of service engineering. for telecommunications and computer networks. During the last 8 years a new international conference series has been established, the Polish-German Teletraffic Symposium aiming at similar topics as the ITC. Several research teams from Germany participate in the Network of Excellence and other Research Programs of the European Union, dealing with the Next Generation Internet and Communication networks. The new Excellence Initiative of the DFG and German Government led to the foundation of Excellence Clusters dealing with topics of advanced research on mobile communications, simulation technologies and information technologies. Recent technological advances in broadband networks, peer-to-peer networks, wireless networks, grid computing, and Internet-based social networks have led to new research challenges, such as providing QoS support for multimedia applications on the future Internet that seamlessly integrates wired, wireless, and overlay networks. Building on the previous success, the objective of this workshop is to bring together researchers, developers, and practitioners working in this area to discuss recent and innovative results, and to identify future directions. The scope of the workshop covers all aspects of QoS research, including related issues such as availability, reliability, security, pricing, resource management, and performance guarantees. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to): * QoS on the Internet * QoS in distributed systems, including grid computing systems * QoS in wireless ad hoc, mesh, and sensor networks * QoS in operating system design * QoS support in middleware * QoS for web services and storage systems * QoS for overlay networks * System dependability, availability, resilience, and robustness * Security and privacy as QoS parameters * Adaptive QoS in a dynamic environment * QoS evaluation metrics and methodologies * QoS analysis and modeling * QoS pricing and billing * QoS architectures and protocols * QoS routing algorithms * Programmability and language features supporting QoS * Rationality, incentive, microeconomics, and self-interest in decentralized networks * QoS in business processes, workflows * Policy-based QoS management * Last-mile QoS at wireless edge * QoS assurance under DoS or DoQ (denial of quality) attacks * QoS design for the future Internet. IWQoS invites submission of manuscripts with original research results that have not been previously published or currently under review by another conference or journal. Submissions will be judged based on originality, significance, interest, clarity, relevance, and correctness. Paper submissions should be no longer than 9 single-spaced, double-column pages with reasonable margins and font sizes of 10 or larger. All accepted papers, will be included in the conference proceedings. At least one of the authors of each accepted paper must present the paper at IWQoS 2009. IWQoS aims at rapid dissemination of research results. For fast turnaround, a short review and publication cycle is designed, with the submission deadline as close to the workshop as the publisher allows. The workshop is a single-track forum spanning two and a half days. Meeting the grand challenges of autonomic computing requires scientific and technological advances in a wide variety of fields, as well as new software and system architectures that support the effective integration of the constituent technologies. The purpose of the 6th International Conference on Autonomic Computing and Communications (ICAC-09) is to bring together researchers and practitioners addressing all aspects of self-management in computing systems and applications. In doing so, we hope to further build and nurture a community that can work together to realize the vision of large-scale self-managing systems. The conference builds on previous highly influential meetings in New York, Seattle, Dublin, Jacksonville and Chicago. Papers are solicited on a broad array of topics of relevance to autonomic computing, particularly those that bear on connections and relationships among different areas of research or report on prototype systems or experiences. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Autonomic computing systems or prototype systems that exhibit self-monitoring, self-configuration, self-optimization, self-healing, and/or self-protection. * Fundamental science of self-managing systems: understanding, controlling, or exploiting emergent behavior, fault-tolerance, machine learning, control theory, predictive methods and their use to automate manual operations and enforce behavior. * Software engineering principles and architectures for self-managing systems, based on interoperable Grid Services, agent-based systems, Web Services, model-based systems or novel paradigms such as biological, economic or social. * System-level technologies, middleware or services that entail interactions among two or more components of self-managing systems in standalone, distributed, cluster, and Grid computing environments (e.g., health monitoring, dependency analysis, problem localization or remediation, workload management, and provisioning). * Toolkits, environments, models, languages, runtime and compiler technologies for building self-managing components, systems or applications. * Specific self-managing components, such as server, storage, network, data center or specific application elements. Emphasis should be placed on techniques or lessons that may generalize to other components. * Management topics, such as specification and modeling of service-level agreements, negotiation/conversation support, behavior enforcement, etc., tie in with IT governance, and interaction with legacy systems. * Interfaces to autonomic systems, including user interfaces, interfaces for monitoring and controlling behavior, techniques for defining, distributing, and understanding policies. * Experiences with autonomic system or component prototypes: measurements, evaluations, or analyses of system behavior, user studies, experiences with large-scale deployments of self-managing systems or applications. * Applications of autonomics to real and complex problems in science, engineering, business and society. PAPER/POSTER SUBMISSIONS AND PUBLICATION Full papers (a maximum of 10 pages in length) and posters (2 pages) are invited on a wide variety of topics relating to autonomic computing as indicated above. All manuscripts will be reviewed and judged on merits including correctness, originality, technical strength, quality of presentation, and relevance to the conference themes. Submitted papers must include original work, and may not be under consideration for another conference or journal. They should also not be under review or be submitted to another forum during the ICAC-09 review process. Authors should submit full papers or posters electronically (PDF or postscript) via EDAS using the link on the ICAC-09 conference web site. Formatting instructions will also be posted at the web site. Accepted papers and posters will appear in proceedings published by ACM (to be confirmed), which will be distributed at the conference. Authors of accepted papers/poster are expected to present their work at the conference. WORKSHOPS, DEMONSTRATIONS AND EXHIBITION ICAC-09 welcomes proposals for co-located workshops on specific topics of general interest to the autonomic computing community. Workshops are expected to publish proceedings, and should cover areas that may not be properly addressed in the main scientific program. ICAC-09 will also feature a demonstration and exhibition session consisting of prototypes and technology artifacts such as demonstrating autonomic software or autonomic computing principles. Entries will be judged by a separate subcommittee led by the demo/exhibit chair. INDUSTRY SESSION A singular value of ICAC is the confluence of top researchers and practitioners from both academia and industry. ICAC-09 will provide a readout of various technologies currently in play from product perspectives. Among the areas to be addressed are core enablers for autonomic capabilities to be realized, such as frameworks, protocols and autonomic engines in production systems. The industry session also will address current areas of difficulty that present direct opportunities for both academic and corporate research. Topics will be relevant to entrepreneurs, product developers, architects, managers, marketers and end users. Papers and posters reflecting such industry perspectives are especially encouraged and can be submitted as described above. STUDENT AWARDS A student best paper award will be presented, consisting of a commemorative plaque, complimentary student registration to the conference and an honorarium that will partially cover travel & hotel costs. Now, that some of the fundamental issues and challenges have been clearly assessed, the focus is partially shifting to new issues, which include application scenarios (road safety, disaster recovery, sensors and actuators, etc.), autonomous organization and operation, optimization and control, and service creation and support. Moreover, new and exciting challenges are posed by closely related networks such as wireless mesh networks, sensor networks, and vehicular networks. Med-Hoc-Net is a major annual international workshop, aiming to serve as a platform for researchers and visionaries from academia, research labs, and industry. Following Sicily (2006), Corfu (2007), and Palma de Mallorca (2008), Med-Hoc-Net 2009 will take place in Haifa (Israel). It will be held at the Viterbi Computech Center in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology. Selected papers will be published in a special issue of the Elsevier Ad Hoc Networks journal. Workshop on Sensor Networks for Earth and Space Science Applications (ESSA 2009) Held in conjunction with ACM/IEEE International Conference on Information Processing in Sensor Networks (IPSN) San Francisco, CA, USA April 16, 2009 Wireless sensor networks and their applications have grown steadily during the past decade as a result of the convergence of various technologies spanning wireless, data processing algorithms, computing hardware, storage, and sensor capabilities. The pervasive nature of static and mobile sensors scattered throughout the environment enables multi-resolution capture of environmental or ambient information that serve as the basis of intelligence for knowledge inference and decision-making. Information processing for sensor networks enables new capabilities to operate autonomously and learn, perceive, reason, and react intelligently to their environments. Large scale sensor networks are now being used in a number of Earth and Space Science applications, including large-area terrestrial systems for geologic monitoring, volcano/plume monitoring, seismic (earthquake) monitoring, large-scale ocean monitoring for tsunamis, storm surges, plumes, algae blooms, and weather forecasting systems comprised of aerial and ground/coastal nodes. Such Earth and Space sensor networks are now evolving from "passive observation and reporting systems" to "active and reactive systems" that dynamically evolve in response to complex and rapid spatio-temporal events. This workshop is a forum for scientists and researchers to present new ideas and papers on sensor networks applications in the areas of Earth and Space Science. Papers on all aspects of Earth and Space Applications can be submitted to this workshop. We expect this workshop to have invited papers as well as contributed papers. Advanced multimedia processing often aims at optimizing the satisfaction of human perceptual system and introduces higher dependency among its processed data, which exhibit different requirement from traditional data communication. Besides, modern communication networks explore multi-dimensional diversity, such as user, frequency, and location; and utilize finer granularity of resources, such as power and spectrum. When transmitting multimedia over communication networks, there are many issues needed to be investigated to improve the end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) requirement. For example, how to deploy the cross-layer design methodology to explore the characteristics in the multimedia signal processing unit and communication networks; and optimize the QoS subject to available resources. When multiple nodes and multimedia sources are involved in the networks, one potential issue is how to allocate resources to each node and source to enhance the end-to-end QoS requirement. == Topics == The aim of this special issue is to bring together the state-of-the-art research contributions that address the various aspects of multimedia communications, networking, and applications. The combination of unique features of wireless vehicular communications and networking issues opens new opportunities for many interesting research areas, for example, real time safety applications, and intelligent diver information services. This is complicated by the available types of media such as images, video, music, speech, text, and graphics, and the relationship and interactions among them. In addition to personal collections located at home PCs and laptops, the wide spread popularity of media and social networking sites such as Flickr, YouTube, Facebook, MySpace, Easyshare Gallery has enabled users to share and browse images and videos. However, due to the huge magnitude and variety of media content, it is increasing difficult for users and consumers to easily navigate, search, compose, and share their content and memories. When we consider the multimedia information available on public web sites, we will be confronting with a big scalability issue with many existing techniques and algorithms. Solutions that address the broad spectrum of personal and social multimedia applications are needed. The goal of this workshop is to provide a technical forum for researchers from academy and industry to discuss the advances and challenges of information processing, analysis, and retrieval for multimedia applications in personal and social domains. We propose to explore emerging areas of research such as cross-media and cross-domain information analysis and extraction, which will enhance current capability of information management applications and enrich the overall multimedia experience. Another area is to leverage rich metadata and contextual information associated with the media content. These include GPS, date/time, captions/tags, camera settings, face and other biometric information. The advances in user interface technologies incorporating speech and gesture recognition will also play an important role in enabling more user friendly and easy to use multimedia applications in the consumer domain. We welcome papers that address fundamental research issues in this challenging area, with emphasis on personal and social applications. We also encourage papers to report on system level research related to multimedia and cross-media analysis, processing, and retrieval. A number of invited papers will also be solicited. Facing these challenges is a community- spanning effort, necessitating the pooling of the resources and experiences of the virtual reality and the networking and distributed computing communities. The aim of this workshop is to provide a link between these communities to foster the development of highly distributed, flexible and robust virtual environments. Following up on last year's very successful workshop (MMVE'08) at IEEE VR, we aim to gather the practitioners and researchers in these fields under one roof to discuss their findings, incite collaboration, and move the state of the art forward. Topics ------ The main topic of this workshop is to provide a critical analysis of existing distribution approaches for virtual environments and to identify key challenges and techniques that are required for bringing VR systems into the global Internet, interconnecting thousands of users in a single environment. More specifically, the workshop addresses the following issues: 1. Scalability, i.e. the ability to handle thousands of (possibly nearby) users at the same time, interacting via the global Internet. 2. Interoperability, i.e. the ability to integrate multiple virtual worlds and/or service providers, e.g. using common protocols or universal clients. 3. Interactivity, i.e. how to provide highly responsive environments with near real time interaction despite network delay and jitter. 4. Bandwidth restricted (mobile) end user devices, e.g. the integration of mobile devices for nomadic augmented reality applications. 5. Dynamic and flexible distribution architectures, e.g. self-adapting client/server, peer-to-peer and hybrid architectures. 6. Content streaming, e.g. sound and 3D streaming. 7. Consistency, i.e. providing consistency guarantees to users of the distributed environment, despite the high level of responsiveness necessary and the experienced network delay. 8. Persistency, i.e. the ability to save and access the state of the virtual environment despite disconnections and faulty components. 9. Security and privacy, e.g. distributed authentication algorithms that allow users to participate in the environment securely and without fear of being spied on. 10. Implementation issues, e.g. novel approaches to effectively manage the complexity of developing applications for such environments. Submission Guidelines ---------------------- Paper submissions must cover one of the topics listed above, or a closely- related one. LoCA 2009 is co-located with Pervasive 2009 the Seventh International Conference on Pervasive Computing, which will be held May 11-14, 2009 in Nara, Japan. The 2009 Symposium on Location and Context Awareness (LoCA) seeks new and significant research on systems, services, and applications to detect, interpret and use location and other contextual information. Context includes physiological, environmental and computational data whether sensed or inferred. In addition, context includes users' activities, goals, abilities, preferences, interruptibility, affordances, and surroundings. With context, we can expect computers to deliver information, services, and entertainment in a way that maximizes convenience and minimizes intrusion. Developing awareness involves research in sensing, systems, machine learning, human computer interaction, and design. We seek technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research results. In addition, a combination of the LoCA program committee and all symposium participants will elect the recipient of the Best Presentation Award following the symposium. Both awards will be made during the symposium. Paper Submission Guidelines: All papers will be reviewed by our international program committee. LoCA 2009 aims to be selective and the committee will favor a technically robust program. The ideal LoCA submission should provide an insightful survey of existing work, introduce a radically new concept, or present concrete, significant, transferable research based on the implementation and evaluation of a working system. All accepted papers will be contained in the symposium proceedings which will be published in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series by Springer. Therefore submissions must conform to the LNCS LaTeX stylesheets. We solicit papers of up to 18 pages in LNCS style but explicitly welcome shorter papers for presentation of pointed results. CALL FOR PAPERS The Sixth Workshop on Wireless Ad hoc and Sensor Networks WWASN 2009 - in conjunction with The International Conference on Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS 2009), June 22-26, 2009 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada This workshop covers the area of ad hoc networking, from physical issues up to application aspects. In particular, it will cover physical, data link, network and transport layers, as well as applications, security, simulation and power management issues in sensor, local area, personal, and mobile ad hoc networks. It is the goal of this workshop to review ad hoc protocols and models and to reflect the latest in the state of the art in ad hoc networks. It seeks to provide up to date information on research and development activities in the rapidly growing area of ad hoc networks. The workshop will also address the rapidly growing field of sensor networks, including the issues related to their topology, routing, performance, data gathering and filtering, energy efficiency, and mobility. Increasing number of people interact through media and less in a face-to-face manner. Elderly tend to get lonely when socializing becomes more difficult because of their age. Children spend an increasing amount of time behind their computer playing games on their own and adults also tend to live a less active life. Due to various reasons the number of people with social impairments (autism spectrum disorders) has noticeably grown during the last decades. Another related trend is that people lead less active lifestyles. At the same time, new technologies provide novel entertainment and interaction opportunities. Paper should explore the opportunities that technology-driven physical play offers for enhancing and stimulating face-to-face social interaction (as opposed to virtual interaction through a computer). This can be beneficial for diverse reasons: For children to counter the trend of playing computer games and watching television on their own, for elderly to socialize more when making new contacts becomes more difficult and for autistic children because they particularly like technological toys. The main goal of the special issue is to share information and experiences among researchers in the area of social interaction through physical play. We invite papers addressing social and physical issues including (but not restricted to) the following fields: - Social robotics - Design for diverse user groups, such as children and elderly - Social games - Creative toolkits - Exertion interfaces - Pervasive and head-up games - Embodied facilitation - Spatial and tangible interaction It is expected that the special issue will include some articles extended from papers that were presented at the 2008 Fun and Games workshop on Design for social interaction through physical play (http://www.idemployee.id.tue.nl/m.m.bekker/WorkshopSPG.htm), but other original articles are also welcome. The term Internet of Services relates to the representation and (partial) execution of services - in the economic sense - in the Internet. Many issues around the mapping between economic services and services in the IT sense are still unresolved. Additionally, only a small fraction of services are entirely dematerialized; the vast majority of services ultimately relate to things in the real world: to the Internet of Things. The Ubiquitous Computing community has already made considerable advances in closing the information gap between services and things. One well-known example is the use of RFID tags in logistics. Yet this is only the beginning, there still exists a largely untapped source of innovation at the junction of services and things. This workshop is about bringing together industry and academia to explore how advances in ubiquitous computing techniques can help improve existing economic services and create opportunities for new services. We are also interested in how services can add value to smart things. This is a forum for industry to learn about recent advances in both services and Ubicomp and also for researchers to learn about the problems faced by industry that may spark new research questions and the next wave of Ubicomp applications. With the recent advances in hardware design and wireless communications, the evolution of new generations of embedded wireless devices, which facilitates reliable, comprehensive, and high-standard healthcare, has attracted intensive attention from both industries and academic institutes. Particularly, developments in wireless infrastructure, such as body-area networks or pervasive health-monitoring system, have proved beneficial to deliver telemedicine services regardless of a patient's physical location. In addition, cost issue is another key concern for worldwide utilization of wireless devices for pervasive healthcare. It has been argued that one of the key characteristics of sensor networks is that they are so tightly coupled with the applications running on top of them. Although WSNs have been an active area of research for over a decade, real world sensor network deployments have not yet found their way to widespread adoption. The experience gained and lessons learned during the initial attempts to deploy WSNs and implement various sensor network applications are very valuable for the advancement of this technology. CALL FOR PAPERS Workshop on Cooperative and Cognitive Networks 21-24 JUNE 2009 Leipzig, Germany In conjunction with the 5th International Wireless Communications and Mobile Computing Conference Workshop scope The concept of cooperative communications for wireless networks, such as cellular networks, sensor networks, and wireless ad hoc networks, has recently attracted considerable attention. Different from conventional point-to-point communications, cooperative communications and networking allows different users or nodes in a wireless network to share resources to create collaboration through distributed transmission/processing, in which each user's information is sent out not only by the user, but also by collaborating users. Cooperative communications and networking is a new communication paradigm promising significant capacity and multiplexing gain increase in wireless networks. It realizes a new form of space diversity to combat the effects of severe fading that has been termed cooperative diversity, and it is also helpful in reducing complexity of routing problems and realizing seamless networking, Although some initial understanding of cooperative communication schemes has been demonstrated in recent years, many more problems related to developing practical and effective cooperative communication systems have emerged or remain open. Cognitive radio has emerged as a promising technology for optimizing utilization of radio bandwidth in the next generation wireless communications systems and networks. This will enable us to cope with the increasing spectrum demand for wireless services as well as create new wireless applications and services. Recently, we have witnessed a flurry of research in dynamic spectrum access and cognitive radio. Development of cognitive radio technology has to deal with technical and practical considerations as well as regulatory requirements, and therefore, there is an increasing interest in this technology among the researchers and the spectrum policy makers. The workshop will focus on the research challenges associated with the design, implementation, and application of cognitive and spectrum agile wireless networks. Call for papers Authors are invited to submit papers for presentation at the workshop. Papers (no more than 6 camera‐ready pages, 10 pt font in IEEE transactions format) should present novel perspectives within the general scope of the workshop (see below). Only original papers that have not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere can be submitted. Papers in excess of page limits shall not be considered for review or publication. SCOPE The Workshop provides a forum for engineers and scientists in academia, industry and government to present their latest research findings in specialized ad-hoc networks and systems. As an alternative to one-size-fits-all general solutions in the area of ad hoc networking and systems, we want to stimulate the application-oriented divide-and-conquer approach to ad hoc network and system research. The goal is to provide sound and efficient specialized ad hoc networks and systems (SAHNS), suitable for building solutions specific for well-defined classes of applications or even individual applications. We want to consider both specialized ad hoc networks and specialized ad hoc systems. The latter can be built on top of specialized ad hoc networks. Alternatively, they can be constructed independently of specialized ad hoc networks, e.g., on top of general-purpose ad hoc networks. It should be emphasized that SAHNS is interested only in solutions specific to specialized ad hoc networks and systems. The Workshop is not interested in broad general-purpose solutions for all ad hoc networks and systems, or in generic solutions for extremely broad subclasses of ad hoc networks and systems. For example, the Workshop is not interested in general-purpose solutions for all sensornets or all P2P systems but is instead interested in specialized solutions for their application-oriented subclasses. One example of SAHNS targeted by this workshop are Incident Area Networks (IANs), dedicated to single incidents or events. An IAN can be pre-deployed for a planned event, such as a sporting or "nationally significant" event, or can be dynamically deployed for an unplanned incident, such as a local law enforcement situation or a natural disaster. Another example are opportunistic resource utilization networks (e.g., oppnets), in which the network reacts to a lack of resources by finding and incorporating "helpers" that have needed resources or services. PAPER SUBMISSION Papers must be submitted in the PDF format, with numbered pages. They should have no more than 6 pages following the IEEE Computer Society proceedings format (8.5 by 11 inch sheets, double-column, 10 point or larger font, single-spaced). PAPER REVIEW AND PUBLISHING Each paper will be peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers and their comments will be provided to the authors. If accepted, the paper will be published in the workshop proceedings by the IEEE Computer Society Press, provided that at least one of its authors registers for ICDCS (which includes SAHNS) by the early registration deadline. As all conferences published by the IEEE Computer Society's Conference Publishing Services (CPS), ICDCS proceedings will be indexed through INSPEC, the leading English-language bibliographic information service for scientific and technical literature. ICDCS proceedings will also be submitted for indexing to EI's Engineering Information Index, Compendex, ISI Thomson's Scientific and Technical Proceedings, ISTP/ISI Proceedings, and Current Contents on Diskette (ISI Thomson). We plan a special issue of an international journal with extended versions of the selected SAHNS papers. 4. The need for efficient merging of the wired and wireless infrastructure as well as the new multimedia services and applications of next generation networks call for novel network architectures, protocols and traffic-related mechanisms. WWIC addresses research topics such as the design and evaluation of protocols, the dynamics of the integration, the performance tradeoffs, the need for new performance metrics, and cross-layer interactions. The goal of the conference is to present high-quality results in the field, and to provide a framework for research collaboration through focused discussions that will designate future research efforts and directions. In this context, the program committee will accept only a limited number of papers that meet the criteria of originality, presentation quality and topic relevance. The key driving forces behind the emergence of Cloud Computing includes the overcapacity of today’s large corporate data centers, the ubiquity of broadband and wireless networking, the falling cost of storage, and progressive improvements in Internet computing software. Currently, the main technical underpinnings of Cloud Computing infrastructures and services include virtualization, service-oriented software, Grid computing technologies, management of large facilities, power efficiency etc. The emergence of Cloud Computing promises to streamline the on-demand provision of software, hardware, and data as a service, achieving economies of scale in the deployment and operation of IT solutions. It is believed that Cloud Computing will be a disruptive technology with profound implications not only for Internet services but also for the IT sector as a whole. This special issue of IC seeks original articles describing research efforts and experiences concerning the deployment, efficient operation, and use of Cloud Computing infrastructures. In order to take the advantages of such services, it is important that intelligent systems be suitable for UC. UC environments have recently drawn enormous attention and interest in both the academic and the industrial research communities as one of the most promising application fields for intelligent services. In fact, the UC domain poses unique challenges such as context fusion, data-mining, multimedia systems / services, communication interoperability, security and safety managements, and so on. This special issue aims to address advanced mobile applications and intelligent multimedia system for UC. It will accept both original research papers and review articles that enhance the state-of-the-art in advanced mobile applications and intelligent multimedia system including topics like interactive context-aware services on mobile devices, intelligent network management and communications, human communication interaction, interactive multimedia systems, multimedia security and privacy issues for UC, and so on. The papers will be peer reviewed and selected on the basis of both their quality and their relevance to the theme of this special issue. Topics Original contributions, not currently under review to another journal or conference, are solicited in relevant areas including, but not limited to, the following: . In particular, it will cover physical, data link, network and transport layers, as well as applications, security, simulation and power management issues in sensor, local area, personal, and mobile ad hoc networks. It is the goal of this workshop to review ad hoc protocols and models and to reflect the latest in the state of the art in ad hoc networks. It seeks to provide up to date information on research and development activities in the rapidly growing area of ad hoc networks. The workshop will also address the rapidly growing field of sensor networks, including the issues related to their topology, routing, performance, data gathering and filtering, energy efficiency, and mobility. A total of 60 papers from 17 different countries had been submitted to the workshop. A total of 32 papers were selected for presentation. Approximately half of the papers were dealing with wireless ad hoc networks, which is why subsequent workshops were focusing specifically on wireless ad hoc networks. WWAN2004 <http://www.lifl.fr/RD2P/WWAN2004> was held during ICDCS-2004 (Tokyo, Japan); it was organized by David Simplot-Ryl and Ivan Stojmenovic. In response to the Call for Papers, 42 papers from 20 different countries had been submitted, 21 of which were selected for presentation at WWAN 2004. WWAN2005 <http://www.lifl.fr/RD2P/WWAN2005> was held during ICDCS-2005 (Columbus, OH); it was organized by David Simplot-Ryl and Ivan Stojmenovic. In response to the Call for Papers, thirty papers from twelve different countries had been submitted, and twelve best ones have been selected for inclusion in the workshop. With several favorable characteristics, such as dynamic self-organization, self-configuration, self-healing, easy maintenance, high scalability and reliable services, wireless mesh networks have been advocated as a cost-effective approach to support high-speed last mile connectivity and ubiquitous broadband access in the context of home networking, enterprise networking, or community networking. Despite recent advances, and the technical accumulations from more than a decade's research effort in mobile ad hoc networks, many research issues remain in all protocol layers of wireless mesh networks. For example, the introducing of mixed (infrastructure and ad hoc) architecture, multi-radio, multi-channel, and multi-antenna, have brought new challenges in the design of physical, MAC, and routing protocols. New application scenarios, such as all-wireless office, are urging researchers to address enhanced QoS support and various security issues in the design of different protocol layers for wireless mesh networks. This workshop aims to bring together the technologies and researchers who share interest in the area of wireless mesh and ad hoc networks. The main purpose is to promote discussions of research and relevant activities in the design of architectures, protocols, algorithms, services, and applications for wireless networks. It also aims at increasing the synergy between academic and industry professionals working in this area. We plan to seek papers that address theoretical, experimental, and work in-progress at the all layers of wireless mesh and ad hoc networks, from application layer to the physical layer. Topics covered by the workshop will include, but are not limited to, the following: - Multi-radio and multi-channel wireless mesh networking - Multi-hop wireless communications and ad hoc networking - MAC protocols (IEEE 802.11, 802.15, 802.16, 802.20, and beyond) - Routing, scheduling, and channel assignment protocols - Quality of Services provisioning - Multimedia communications over mesh and ad hoc networks - Network deployment, localization, and synchronization - Topology construction and maintenance - Modeling and performance evaluations - Cross layer optimizations - Power-aware and energy-efficient protocols and algorithms - Intelligent system techniques for mesh and ad hoc networks - Testbed, prototype, and practical systems - Novel applications of mesh and ad hoc networks - Vehicular mesh and ad hoc networks - Wireless sensor networks - Self-adaptive and self-organizing wireless networking systems Important Dates ----------------------- - Paper submission due: December 17, 2008 - Acceptance notification: February 7, 2009 - Camera-ready due: March 7, 2009 - Workshop: June 26, 2009 Submissions and Publications -------------------------------------------- Authors are invited to submit manuscripts reporting original unpublished research and recent developments in the topics related to the workshop. Submissions should include an abstract, key words, the e-mail address of the corresponding author. The length of the papers should be limited to 6 pages in standard IEEE camera-ready format (double-column, 10-pt font). Authors must submit their papers through the CMT conference management site (https://cmt.research.microsoft.com/WIMAN2009). Submission of a paper should be regarded as an undertaking that, should the paper be accepted, at least one of the authors will register and attend the workshop to present the work. All papers will be peer reviewed and the reviewers' comments will be provided to the authors. All accepted papers will be published in workshop proceedings by IEEE Computer Society Press and IEEE online library.
