Das CSCW-Doktorandenseminar 2008 ist als "Doctoral Consortium" der gesamten Tagung Mensch und Computer 2008 (http://www.vielmehr.org/muc/) ausgerichtet. Es sind also Bewerber zu allen Themenbereichen der Tagung eingeladen. Neben den Doktoranden nehmen an der Veranstaltung erfahrene Wissenschaftler und Praktiker aus dem Bereich "Mensch und Computer" teil. Das Doktorandenseminar wird von Prof. Dr. Stephan Lukosch (FernUniversität in Hagen) organisiert. Als Moderatoren für das Seminar agieren in diesem Jahr: * Prof. Dr. Jörg Haake (FernUniversität in Hagen) * Prof. Wolfgang Prinz, PhD (RWTH Aachen und Fraunhofer FIT) * Prof. Dr. Jürgen Ziegler (Universität Duisburg-Essen) Teilnehmer / Bewerbung ====================== Interessierte Teilnehmer arbeiten gerade an einer Dissertation im Themenbereich der Tagung "Mensch und Computer" oder haben eine solche gerade abgeschlossen. Da die Anzahl der Teilnehmer für das Doktorandenseminar beschränkt ist, sollen interessierte Teilnehmer bis zum 08. Juli 2008 einen Kurzbeitrag zu ihrer Dissertation (Motivation, Problemstellung, Lösungsweg, (Zwischen-)Ergebnisse) auf maximal vier Seiten (Formatvorlage der Mensch-und-Computer-Konferenz, http://www.vielmehr.org/muc/downloads/Autorenrichtlinien_mc2008.dot) einreichen. Call for Papers Submission Deadline - 15 June 2008 IEEE Communications Magazine Feature Topic on Advances in Cooperative and Relay Communications In wireless networks, relays have been traditionally used to extend the range of communication systems. However, in recent years, other applications of relay communications have emerged. One such emerging application is to assist in the communication between the source and destination via some cooperation protocol. By controlling medium access between source and relays coupled with the appropriate modulation or coding in such cooperative schemes, it has been found that the diversity of the system can be improved. In multi-user systems, different users can also act as cooperative partners or relays to share resources and assist each other in information transmission, thereby creating a cooperative network. One other emerging application is the exchange of information between multiple users through relay(s). In such cases, by exploiting the knowledge of one's own transmitted signal, the throughput of these systems can be drastically increased. For cooperative and relay communications, the MAC layer also has many unique features. The MAC in this case, is concerned with more than one hop communication, is distributed and cooperative and works for multipoint-to-multipoint communication. The MAC also needs to have knowledge about network topology and account for node mobility. Accordingly, a new design of the MAC layer has to be devised to include new functionalities as well as MAC layer routing. With the large benefits to be reaped from employing cooperative and relay techniques, several standardization groups, such as IEEE 802.16 and IEEE 802.11, have started standardization processes to include such technologies into their prevailing standards. These efforts will no doubt attract even more interests from the academia and industry, advancing cooperative and relay technologies even further in the coming years. With interests from both the research and industrial communities gaining momentum, there is an urgent need to better understand as well as to keep track of cutting edge research in cooperative and relay communications. We plan this special issue to help address that need, as well as to help researchers looking to jump on the bandwagon. Therefore, the special issue will focus on recent advances as well as survey papers in cooperative and relay communications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following topics: . Cooperative algorithms and protocols . Partner(s) selection in cooperative relay and routing . Cooperative resource allocation and management . Relay strategies for cooperative communications . Cooperative and relay technologies applied to WLAN, WMAN and cellular networks . Multidirectional relaying . Distributed coding and modulation . The main focus of this workshop is on simulation of wireless multi-hop networks. The SWiN workshop is devoted to the topic of wireless multi-hop network simulators. An efficient and accurate simulation of these networks raises various issues which generally need to be addressed from several research domains simultaneously. CALL FOR PAPERS Themenheft "Energiebewusste Systeme" Praxis der Informationsverarbeitung und Kommunikation (PIK) Fachzeitschrift für den Einsatz von Informationssystemen Energie ist eine kritische, manchmal sogar die kritischste Ressource bei vielen modernen Rechensystemen und deren Anwendungen vom Sensornetz, über das Mobiltelefon bis hin zu Laptops und Servern. Somit stellt dieses Arbeitsgebiet einen wichtigen Bereich der aktuellen Forschung im Bereich Systemsoftware (Betriebs- und Kommunikationssysteme) dar. Insbesondere entstehen, getrieben durch immer kleinere und mobilere Endgeräte, neue Anwendungsszenarien mit hohen Anforderungen an Verfügbarkeit, Langlebigkeit, Adaptivität und Selbstorganisation. Im Rahmen des GI/ITG KuVS Fachgesprächs "Energiebewusste Systeme und Methoden" wurde eine Reihe von Forschungsgebieten erarbeitet, die einen wesentlichen methodischen Beitrag zu neuartigen energiebewussten Systemen leisten können. Betriebssysteme: Einzig das Betriebssystem kennt alle strukturellen Eigenschaften der darunter liegenden Hardware wie auch der laufenden Anwendungen. Somit kann es dabei die Hardwarekomponenten in den jeweils für das Gesamtsystem optimalen Betriebsmodus versetzen und die Verweildauer in den jeweiligen Betriebsmodi durch eine energiebewusste Aktivitätensteuerung beeinflussen. Drahtlose Netze: Funkübertragung ist im Vergleich zu Berechnungen oft wesentlich teurer in Bezug auf die benötigt Energie. Durch optimierte Technologien für die zuverlässige Übertragung, Vorverarbeitung und Zwischenspeicherung kann die Sende- und Empfangszeit verringert werden. Neue Kommunikationsparadigmen helfen den Aufwand für die Statusverwaltung zu minimieren. Kommunikationsprotokolle: Aufbauend auf den spezifischen Eigenschaften und Funktionen der verfügbaren Übertragungstechniken, lassen sich Kommunikationsprotokolle für energiebewusstes Arbeiten anpassen. Sogenanntes Cross-Layer-Design hilft, Verzerrungs- und Störeffekte zwischen den Protokollen der Sicherungs-, Netzwerk- und Transportschicht zu vermeiden bzw. zu minimieren. Middleware: Mit der zunehmenden Vernetzung mobiler und eingebetteter Systeme ist das energiebewusste Arbeiten von Basisfunktionalität sogenannter Middleware-Dienste, wie Kommunikation und Vermittlung, unabdingbar. Insbesondere kann auf dieser Schicht nicht isoliert gearbeitet werden. Unter dem thematischen Schwerpunkt energiebewusste Systeme und Methoden sind Beiträge zu allen relevanten Themengebieten erwünscht. Dazu gehören unter anderem aber nicht ausschließlich: - Betriebssystemunterstützung - Kommunikationsmethoden - Protokollentwurf - Simulationstechniken - Schichtenübergreifender Entwurf - Beobachtung des Laufzeitverhaltens realer Systeme Eingereichte Manuskripte sollten ca. 6 gedruckten Seiten entsprechen (eine Seite in der PIK entspricht ca. 6000 Zeichen ohne Abbildungen). Sowohl Deutsche als auch Englische Beiträge sind erwünscht. Alle eingereichten Manuskripte werden von unabhängigen Gutachtern bewertet. [our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message] Deadline for autonomics 2008 extended, please see below. ***** AUTONOMICS 2008 ***** 2nd International Conference on Autonomic Computing and Communication Systems http://www.autonomics.eu/ September 23-25, 2008, Turin, Italy In recent years, a plethora of electronic devices embedded into everyday objects and able to interface with the surrounding environment have emerged, foreshadowing the deployment of pervasive context-aware services. Similar to the Internet, these trends will revolutionize existing paradigms of communication, networking, and computing. In particular, the complexity hidden in such dynamic large-scale networks and services calls for self-management and autonomicity as a necessary condition for obtaining purposeful systems. The challenges posed by such a vision cover a wide range of disciplines and sciences, including computing, communication, distributed systems, and control systems. Further, these challenges call for a new, integrated and multidisciplinary approach to pervasive computing and communication environments, giving rise to a new converged science, able to work at the junction of systems, computing and communication sciences. The Autonomics conference provides an international forum driving the emergent science of autonomic systems, bringing together research communities in communication and computing, promoting cross-fertilization among the different disciplines involved. Scope: The primary research challenges faced are the communication, design, programming, deployment, use, and fundamental limits of autonomic, pervasive, context-aware systems running on top of dynamic, possibly large-scale, distributed systems. Wi-Fi and WiMax based wireless mesh networks are examples of such technologies currently under deployment, fostering broadband wireless network access and supporting different communication ranges. While these technologies provide flexible communication compared to wired networks and single hop communication models, they are still restricted to the existing wireless backbone coverage. The convergence of ubiquitous computing and networking with wireless and mobile networking technologies opens a path to a prom! ising opportunity for ubiquitous wireless mesh networks and services. Indeed, this provides a great potential for enabling ubiquitous wireless network access in the next generation mobile networks. Please accept our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this CfP CALL FOR PAPERS IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (JSAC) BIO-INSPIRED NETWORKING Technology is taking us to a world where myriads of massively networked devices interact with the physical world in multiple ways, and at multiple scales, from the global Internet down to micro- and nano-devices. Many of these devices are highly mobile and autonomous, and must adapt to the surrounding environment in a totally distributed and unsupervised way. Recently, a number of approaches inspired by biological mechanisms and phenomena have been proposed as a strategy to handle the complexity of massively distributed systems such as the Internet, or wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. The goal of bio-inspired approaches is to discover and to adapt biological methods to technical solutions that are showing similarly high stability, adaptability, and scalability as biological entities often have. This special issue intends to highlight the latest achievements in the new research domain of bio-inspired networking. In particular, the issue focuses on methodologies for identifying relevant biological mechanisms, the modeling of these mechanisms, and their application to technical solutions. Prospective articles are expected to outline either proof of concept studies with direct comparison to classical technical solutions, or theoretical mathematical models of biological principles associated with fundamental challenges in communication systems. For this special issue, we consider all techniques with direct biological background including animal learning strategies, self-organizing methods as observed from swarms down to nano-structures that are observed and analyzed in molecular biology. Classical complex systems research is explicitly excluded from the scope whereas a comparison to well-known techniques in this domain is appreciated. This special issue is dedicated to bio-inspired approaches addressing various aspects of networking and communication systems. Even though 4G standard is currently not defined, there are many current outlooks that delineate the vision of the new wireless technologies. Based on the emergent trends of mobile communication, 4G will have larger bandwidth, higher data rates, smoother and quicker handoff and will focus on guaranteeing faultless service and seamless handoff across a multitude of wireless networks. The key concept is integrating the 4G capabilities with all of the existing mobile technologies. Special maneuvers will be necessary amongst different access systems in terms of horizontal (intrasystem) and vertical (inter-system) handoff as well as seamless mobility, Quality of Service (QoS), dependability and security. However, in recent years, other applications of relay communications have emerged. One such emerging application is to assist in the communication between the source and destination via some cooperation protocol. By controlling medium access between source and relays coupled with the appropriate modulation or coding in such cooperative schemes, it has been found that the diversity of the system can be improved. In multi-user systems, different users can also act as cooperative partners or relays to share resources and assist each other in information transmission, thereby creating a cooperative network. One other emerging application is the exchange of information between multiple users through relay(s). In such cases, by exploiting the knowledge of one's own transmitted signal, the throughput of these systems can be drastically increased. For cooperative and relay communications, the MAC layer also has many unique features. The MAC in this case, is concerned with more than one hop communication, is distributed and cooperative and works for multipoint-to-multipoint communication. The MAC also needs to have knowledge about network topology and account for node mobility. Accordingly, a new design of the MAC layer has to be devised to include new functionalities as well as MAC layer routing. With the large benefits to be reaped from employing cooperative and relay techniques, several standardization groups, such as IEEE 802.16 and IEEE 802.11, have started standardization processes to include such technologies into their prevailing standards. These efforts will no doubt attract even more interests from the academia and industry, advancing cooperative and relay technologies even further in the coming years. With interests from both the research and industrial communities gaining momentum, there is an urgent need to better understand as well as to keep track of cutting edge research in cooperative and relay communications. We plan this special issue to help address that need, as well as to help researchers looking to jump on the bandwagon. Therefore, the special issue will focus on recent advances as well as survey papers in cooperative and relay communications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following topics: . However, this architecture is losing its original simplicity and transparency as new classes of applications, operational and management requirements, business models, security mechanisms and scalability enablers give rise to point solutions that extend the architecture without regard to the original design principles. While these mechanisms are necessary for Internet operation under current economical, technical and social conditions, their combination has significantly reduced the potential for incremental evolution of the Internet architecture. This loss of flexibility is already being felt as the number of Internet nodes grows by another order of magnitude. Several substantial Future Internet initiatives have started in Europe, the US and Asia, and the vendor and network operator communities are also actively discussing the limitations of the current Internet architecture as well as its potential evolution. This workshop will discuss what the real underlying problems are with the Internet and how we might fix them so that the Internet architecture re-gains its simplicity and transparency and is fit for another 30+ years, so that the architectural simplicity and clarity of the Internet can be regained and retained for another 30+ years. This workshop solicits original, high-quality papers that analyze, and discuss ideas for a new Internet architecture, including specific improvements to current Internet protocols, especially at the internetworking, transport and application layers, new internetworking components that integrate into the existing architecture and ideas for clean-slate internetworking architectures. Topics ReArch'08 covers all aspects related to the current and future Internet architecture including, but not limited to, how the following impact on that architecture: New networking paradigms New business models New routing architectures New traffic engineering and congestion control mechanisms Measurements and analysis that characterize the real architectural limitations New architecture proposals and their implications for research New protocols that address the limitations Studies of interactions between stakeholders of the Internet and the architecture itself Design principles and interfaces to accommodate the conflicting interests of stakeholders in the architecture Principles of evolving future architectures Requirements for interworking with the existing Internet, and for deployability. The Workshop on ns-2 (WNS2) (http://www.wns2.org/) is a two-day event held in conjunction with VALUETOOLS 2008, the Third International Conference on Performance Evaluation Methodologies and Tools (http://www.valuetools.org/), during the week of 20-24 October 2008 in Athens, Greece. WNS2 2008 follows the success of the first WNS2 workshop in 2006. A tutorial day on Thursday 23 October is followed by presentation of reviewed papers on Friday 24 October 2008. The main goals of this second WNS2 workshop are to bring together networking researchers from both academia and industry, to discuss recent advances, to identify future directions in network simulation, and to foster interdisciplinary collaborative research in this area. The workshop aims to emphasise the future evolution of ns-2, now that ns-3 is under active development, and its extension in novel research areas and networking technologies and scenarios. TOPICS OF INTEREST This workshop focuses on the ns simulator in itself, and in improving simulation. We seek original contributions that go beyond the use of ns-2 as is for networking scenarios, and which try to make ns do something new and different. Topics of interest for the Workshop include, but are not limited to: Structural developments/enhancements to the ns-2 simulator itself: - Presentation/evaluation of new features/architectures under development for ns-3. - Dynamic management of libraries / ns-Modules. - Large-scale network simulation and model-based simulation approaches. - Development of parallel and distributed versions of ns. Use of virtualization with ns. - Integration of simulation and emulation. - Post-processing tools, including GUIs for statistical analysis and visualization of simulation results. DTN concerns partial sub-networks, aiming at providing network connections between devices and areas that are not well-served by current networking technology. The nodes in DTN carry the packets while they are moving, and then forward the packets once a wireless connection is available between them. Vehicular communications allow the real-time information exchange between vehicles and infrastructures, with the objective of enhancing road safety and optimizing road traffic. VANETs are primarily enabled by inter-vehicular (or Car-to-Car, C2C) communications and vehicle-roadside communications (or Car-to-Infrastructure, C2I). Despite their tremendous potential and far-reaching impacts on the revolution of human life, both DTNs and VANETs suffer from security and privacy issues which dramatically limit their applications. First of all, they have similar vulnerabilities to other wireless networks, which allow attackers to manipulate and inject messages, breaching system availability, confidentiality and integrity. Besides the traditional prevention techniques, trust management may serve as another security basis for nodes cooperation and information dissemination. Furthermore, the unique characteristics of DTNs and VANETs such as uncertain mobility and unpredictable latency, make security for those networks even more challenging. In particular, due to the frequent disconnections between nodes in DTNs, distributed certificate authorities rather than centralized ones are more desirable (while the frequent distribution of a large amount of certificates should be avoided due to high round-trip time), and the user credentials/keys should be updated periodically instead of relying on revocation messages. Moreover, due to the sporadic connectivity and long delay of message transmissions in DTNs, secure message management is needed to eliminate expired messages and avoid information leakage. In VANETs, the high-speed mobility and the large number of network entities call for time-efficient and cost-saving authorization and authentication models, as well as fast attacker detection, revocation and trace back schemes. In addition, both DTN and VANETs suffer from the privacy-invasive issue, which naturally arises in the environment where the mobile equipments are bounded to the moving users. A suite of privacy-preserving techniques are required to provide the fine level protection of the critical information and user profiles, e.g., a set of equipments related to a particular user in DTNs, personal information (and the liability in case of authority investigation) related to drivers and passengers in VANETs. Anonymization techniques are crucial for the safe sharing of network data. While current network data anonymization techniques are generally acknowledged to be useful, it is difficult to ensure they are free from information leakage. Also, anonymization involves fundamental tradeoffs between the protection of user privacy and the utility of the resulting data, and these tradeoffs need to be better understood. This workshop seeks to focus on new and innovative solutions for anonymizing network data that will ensure appropriate protection of host identities, network configurations, and network security practices within enterprise networks. However, various applications and media formats may have different quality evaluation criteria and control parameters. For example, scalability and interactivity are very crucial performance metrics for 3D graphics scene model representation and delivery, while they may not be that important for some other multimedia applications. Thus, there is a strong impetus to develop new quality evaluation methodologies for various media formats under different multimedia application scenarios. Recently, cross-layer design has become a popular design methodology for enhancing Quality-of-Service (QoS) over various multimedia communications systems. However, most existing cross-layer designs for QoS provisioning in multimedia communications are mainly focused on improving network-oriented QoS such as throughput, delay, and jitter, while the multimedia application-oriented QoS have not been fully considered in the existing cross-layer design optimization. Therefore, quality-driven multimedia communications need to be extensively investigated under various communications scenarios involving audio, video, VoIP, image, and/or graphics. Under such a background, it is very important to highlight the importance of quality-driven cross-layer design as one of the enabling technologies for the next-generation quality-aware service-oriented multimedia networks. The aim of this special issue is to bring together the state-of-the-art research contributions that address the various aspects of quality-driven cross-layer designs for multimedia communications. Similar to the Internet, these trends will revolutionize existing paradigms of communication, networking, and computing. In particular, the complexity hidden in such dynamic large-scale networks and services calls for self-management and autonomicity as a necessary condition for obtaining purposeful systems. The challenges posed by such a vision cover a wide range of disciplines and sciences, including computing, communication, distributed systems, and control systems. Further, these challenges call for a new, integrated and multidisciplinary approach to pervasive computing and communication environments, giving rise to a new converged science, able to work at the junction of systems, computing and communication sciences. The Autonomics conference provides an international forum driving the emergent science of autonomic systems, bringing together research communities in communication and computing, promoting cross-fertilization among the different disciplines involved. Scope: The primary research challenges faced are the communication, design, programming, deployment, use, and fundamental limits of autonomic, pervasive, context-aware systems running on top of dynamic, possibly large-scale, distributed systems. Nodes in today's challenged networks often include mobile nodes, space-based nodes, sensor/actuator nodes and other devices. Performance of the network paths interconnecting such nodes can be highly varying in terms of bandwidth, latency, disruption characteristics and security requirements. Conventional Internet access in performance-limited environments such as developing countries can also be regarded as challenged networks as can be ad-hoc communication between personal devices. The Internet protocol architecture suffers some problems when used in a challenged network setting. For example, when disconnection and reconnection is common or link performance is highly variable or extreme, one or more of the traditional Internet protocols do not work well. In this workshop following CHANTS 2007, CHANTS 2006 and WDTN 2005, we wish to explore ongoing efforts in dealing with physical networks that operate significantly differently from wired, connected networks and the protocol architectures and algorithms used to deal with such situations. Techniques for making applications tolerant to disruptions and/or high delays are also in scope. CHANTS 2008 Demonstration Program offers an excellent way to showcase to attendees from academia and industry tangible results from research and development in the exciting area of challenged networks. Demos have the ability to communicate ideas and concepts in a very powerful way. We invite you to contribute your vision and experience with challenged networks to CHANTS 2008 Demonstration Program. Demo proposals shall present recent practical results from the area of challenged networks. In exceptional cases, where live demos are simply not practical to present, poster or video presentations of practical results are acceptable, too. Accepted demonstration abstracts will be published in the Conference proceedings. Topics: Characterization of performance-challenged networks e.g. measurements, modelling. Networking systems operating over unusual/challenged networks. Protocol design and evaluation of operations over challenged networks. System architecture and design for challenged networks. High quality papers are sought on simulation tools, methodologies, applications, and practices. -- TOPICS -- The aim of the conference is to bring academic and industry researchers together with practitioners (from both the simulation community and from the numerous simulation user communities). The conference will address current and future trends in simulation techniques, models and practices, and foster interdisciplinary collaborative research in this area. While the main focus of the conference is on simulation tools, the conference also encourages the submission of broader theoretical and practical research contributions. Summary and Topics: Thanks to technological advances, wired and wireless sensor networks are attracting an increasing attention that promotes their large-scale deployments in many applications, such as environmental monitoring, military surveillance, and scientific exploration. Continuous improvements are motivating works in addressing specific sensor network issues spanning hardware, network protocols, architecture, operating systems, and applications. Furthermore, emergent needs to fulfill a variety of heterogeneous requirements are highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary networks that control their processing and manage their resources by means of self-organizing techniques. These techniques particularly require sharing the decision-making process over hundreds of low-power, short lifetimes sensors. The achievement of this goal is still facing an urgent and challenging question on how to provide these spatially distributed sensors with reasonable autonomy that help them in performing the right action, at the right time for the sake of fulfilling current requirements while increasing the lifetime of the entire sensor network and guaranteeing reliable and enduring pathway communications. Automating the sensor network activities is also an urgent and challenging issue especially that commonly sensing devices are operating unattended in remote and hostile areas where manual maintenance is nearly impossible. Since predefined and late decisions do not help much in improving the efficiency of networked sensing devices, automation and autonomy are very important mechanisms in addressing upcoming developments that target multi-services, collaborating, or competing sensor networks. To reach these goals, the first International Workshop on Automated and Autonomous Sensor Networks is seeking novel ideas in the following topics that include, but not limited to: - Heterogeneous sensor networks - Multi-service sensor networks - Sensor network control - Automated sensing activities - Competing sensors or sensor networks - Collaborating sensors and sensor networks - Semantic-based management of sensor networks - Resource management in sensor networks - Context awareness in sensor networks - Self-organization and self-adaptation in sensor networks - New architectures and protocols for sensor networks - New sensor network applications - Sensor network maintenance - Intelligent sensors and sensor networks - Data management in sensor networks - Data and resource sharing in sensor networks Important Dates: Submission deadline: August 17th 2008 Acceptance notification: September 07th 2008 Camera ready papers: September 17th 2008 Submission Guidelines: (http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=cstst08) This Submissions must be in an electronic form as PDF or MS Word files and should be uploaded using the conference website. Full paper submissions should be in ACM format with a limit of 6 pages. Papers that fail to comply with length limit will be rejected. Submissions will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 independent reviewers of the PC. Selection criteria will include: relevance, significance, impact, originality, technical soundness, and quality of presentation. Preference will be given to submissions that take strong or challenging positions on important emergent topics. At least one author should attend the workshop to present the paper. The conference Proceedings will be indexed by ACM Digital Libraries and published with an ISBN.
