Call for Papers 22nd International Conference on Architecture of Computing Systems ARCS 2009 - System Architecture and Energy Awareness - held from March, 10th to March 13th in Delft, The Netherlands Submission deadline October 10th The ARCS series of conferences has over 30 years of tradition reporting top notch results in computer architecture and operating systems research. This year's focus is energy awareness viewed from two different ways Firstly, this deals with the improvement of computer systems to be as energy efficient as possible (particularly for specific applications). One can think of heterogeneous multi-core architectures or reconfigurable architectures for this purpose. Secondly, this addresses the usage of computer systems to reduce the energy consumption of other systems, which might lead to problems of communication and cooperation. Both aspects are relevant for the conference. Like the previous conferences in this series, it continues to be an important forum for computer architecture research. In 2009 ARCS will be hosted by the Delft University of Technology, which has one of the leading information technology schools in Europe. The proceedings of ARCS 2009 will be published in the Springer Lecture Notes on Computer Science (LNCS) series (pending). After the conference, authors of selected papers will be invited to submit an extended version of their contribution for publication in a special issue of the Journal of Systems Architecture. Also, a best paper and best presentation award will be presented at the conference. Paper submission ================ Authors are invited to submit original, unpublished research papers on one of the following topics: - Energy-awareness, green computing. - Computer architecture topics such as multi-cores, memory systems, and parallel computing. - Adaptive system architectures such as reconfigurable systems in hardware and software. - Operating Systems including but not limited to scheduling, memory management, power management, and RTOS. - System aspects of ubiquitous and pervasive computing such as sensor nodes, novel input/output devices, novel computing platforms, architecture modeling, and middleware. - Organic and Autonomic Computing including both theoretical and practical results on self-organization, self-configuration, self-optimization, self-healing, and self-protection techniques. - Embedded systems including but not limited to architecture, communication, design methodologies, and applications. - Network Centric and Grid Computing issues with a focus on middleware. Based on these recent developments, it is clear that there are many other potentially useful tools and techniques developed in different scientific fields that the networking community is not aware of. With this Special Issue of Computer Networks, we aim to bring to the attention of researchers and practitioners novel interdisciplinary tools that can be successfully applied to the analysis and design of computer and communication networks. We solicit papers that innovatively use tools from other scientific disciplines in the service of understanding, analyzing, and optimizing computer and communication networks. A limited number of invited survey papers, presenting relevant tools and techniques from other disciplines, will also be considered for publication. We are particularly interested in paradigms that build on results and techniques developed in the context of: * Biology * Physics * Road traffic engineering * Utility Network Engineering * Economics and Social Systems The list is not restrictive - authors are encouraged to contact the editors before submitting a paper to determine whether the proposed submission is within the scope of the Special Issue. Moreover, today's wireless networks are characterized by fixed spectrum assignment policies, which often lead to wasting large spectrum portions due to sporadic utilization of the licensed users (according to FCC, only 15% to 85% of the licensed spectrum is utilized on the average). This situation has motivated and pushed forward the development of novel low-power wireless Cognitive Radio transceivers with the capability of changing their transmitter parameters (operating spectrum, modulation, transmission power and communication technology) based on interaction with the surrounding environment. Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) based on nodes equipped with cognitive transceivers have consequently emerged as viable architectural solutions to solve current wireless network problems resulting from the limited available spectrum and the inefficiency in the spectrum usage by exploiting the existing wireless spectrum opportunistically. Scope and Contributions This special issue aims to consolidate and disseminate the latest developments and advances in the emerging area of Multi-hop CRNs, which is defined as a collection of cognitive transceiver-equipped nodes forming a multi-hop communication network. The main focus of this special issue is on networking aspects of multi-hop CRNs where the information needs to be relayed over multiple wireless links. The operation of Multi-hop CRNs is not limited to the discovery and allocation of wireless resources while avoiding service disruption for primary users. Additional tasks must be accomplished to sustain end-to-end communication, including identification of sets of relay nodes, ensuring that required bandwidth is available over all necessary links, and regulating resource sharing among all flows in the network. Most importantly, these goals must be achieved while coping with negative effects of frequent link outages due to primary user access. Preferably, the multi-hop CRN must also ensure that flow requirements, such as bandwidth, delay, and jitter bounds, are met. This special issue provides opportunities for the research community, the standardization bodies, and the industry to showcase the-state-of-the-art of the research on networking aspects of Multi-hop CRNs, implementation studies, and feasibility analyses. Moreover, since the success of CRN also depends on spectrum regulatory aspect, we also solicit critical contributions addressing the Multi-hop CRM architecture as it relates to spectrum competition under regulated, partially regulated or unregulated competitive environments. While the nature of the multi-hop CRNs necessitates high levels of interaction and dependency between the physical layer and protocols and solutions at MAC layer and above, the main focus of this special issue is the networking aspects of multi-hop CRNs. Therefore, the design of cognitive transceivers and hardware, signal processing techniques, modulation and coding methods, physical layer channel models, as well as networking issues primarily concerning single-hop CRNs fall outside the scope of the special issue. We solicit papers written in a tutorial and survey style, accessible to the non-expert, presenting the state of the art. In addition, there is a growing interest on the local community and municipal levels to get broadband wireless access, but the number of options regarding network and service providers, as well as price and usage plans, is severely limited. However, affordable broadband for all is a key requirement to bridge the digital divide and to bring sustainable development to rural and developing regions as well as to support communities and municipalities. Today, existing technologies and plans for broadband access fail to address key challenges in terms of cost, deployment, or power consumption in order to bring broadband internet access to sparsely populated rural areas or to the masses of developing countries. While the focus of the general M4D conference is on multi-disciplinary research addressing the social, political, cultural and educational barriers to bringing ICT into developing regions, this workshop focuses on the technical and economical aspects of enabling (broadband) wireless internet access for rural and developing areas, as well as supporting communities and municipalities. The goal is to bring together researchers and practitioners and to serve as a forum for presenting and discussing state of the art research, exchanging ideas and experiences, and facilitating interaction and collaboration. Somit stellt dieses Arbeitsgebiet einen wichtigen Bereich der aktuellen Forschung im Bereich Systemsoftware (Betriebs- und Kommunikationssysteme) dar. Insbesondere entstehen, getrieben durch immer kleinere und mobilere Endgeräte, neue Anwendungsszenarien mit hohen Anforderungen an Verfügbarkeit, Langlebigkeit, Adaptivität und Selbstorganisation. Im Rahmen des GI/ITG KuVS Fachgesprächs "Energiebewusste Systeme und Methoden" wurde eine Reihe von Forschungsgebieten erarbeitet, die einen wesentlichen methodischen Beitrag zu neuartigen energiebewussten Systemen leisten können. Betriebssysteme: Einzig das Betriebssystem kennt alle strukturellen Eigenschaften der darunter liegenden Hardware wie auch der laufenden Anwendungen. Somit kann es dabei die Hardwarekomponenten in den jeweils für das Gesamtsystem optimalen Betriebsmodus versetzen und die Verweildauer in den jeweiligen Betriebsmodi durch eine energiebewusste Aktivitätensteuerung beeinflussen. Drahtlose Netze: Funkübertragung ist im Vergleich zu Berechnungen oft wesentlich teurer in Bezug auf die benötigt Energie. Durch optimierte Technologien für die zuverlässige Übertragung, Vorverarbeitung und Zwischenspeicherung kann die Sende- und Empfangszeit verringert werden. Neue Kommunikationsparadigmen helfen den Aufwand für die Statusverwaltung zu minimieren. Kommunikationsprotokolle: Aufbauend auf den spezifischen Eigenschaften und Funktionen der verfügbaren Übertragungstechniken, lassen sich Kommunikationsprotokolle für energiebewusstes Arbeiten anpassen. Sogenanntes Cross-Layer-Design hilft, Verzerrungs- und Störeffekte zwischen den Protokollen der Sicherungs-, Netzwerk- und Transportschicht zu vermeiden bzw. zu minimieren. Middleware: Mit der zunehmenden Vernetzung mobiler und eingebetteter Systeme ist das energiebewusste Arbeiten von Basisfunktionalität sogenannter Middleware-Dienste, wie Kommunikation und Vermittlung, unabdingbar. Insbesondere kann auf dieser Schicht nicht isoliert gearbeitet werden. Unter dem thematischen Schwerpunkt energiebewusste Systeme und Methoden sind Beiträge zu allen relevanten Themengebieten erwünscht. IPSN brings together researchers from academia, industry, and government to present and discuss recent advances in both theoretical and experimental research. Its scope includes signal and image processing, information and coding theory, databases and information management, distributed algorithms, networks and protocols, wireless communications, machine learning, and embedded systems design. The conference features two interleaved tracks, the Information Processing (IP) track, and the Sensor Platforms, Tools and Design Methods (SPOTS) track. The two tracks have separate program committees to evaluate their submissions. Authors should carefully review the intended foci of these two tracks to decide which track is better suited for their work, and they are encouraged to contact program chairs with questions or clarifications. The Information Processing (IP) track focuses on algorithms, systems, theory for information processing using networks of embedded sensors. Topics covered in this track include, but are not limited to: - Applications and deployment experiences - Coding, compression and information theory - Data processing, storage and management - Detection, classification, and tracking - Distributed algorithms and reasoning - Distributed and collaborative signal processing - Fault tolerance and identification - Fundamental bounds and formulations - Location, time, and other network services - Operating systems and runtime environments - Network health monitoring and management - Network protocols - Programming models and languages - Security - Sensor tasking, control, and actuation - Simulation The Sensor Platforms, Tools, and Design Methods (SPOTS) track focuses on networked embedded sensor platforms and tools. Submissions are expected to refer to specific hardware, software, and implementations. The SPOTS track focuses on new architectures, modeling, evaluation, design methods, implementations, tools, or deployment experiences. Results focused on the analysis and processing aspects of data collected from deployments should be submitted to the IP track, while details on the platforms and tools used in the deployment should be submitted to SPOTS. From a number of angles it appears that we have reached a point in the impressive development cycle of the Internet that now requires some major change. However, research and development in these areas is still at an early stage and the space of potential solutions is far from being explored. The International Workshop on the Network of the Future (Future-Net 09) is a platform for both clean-slate as well as evolutionary approaches for a redesign of the Internet. It will uniquely bring together approaches driven from mobile and wireless demands, network virtualization, network self-management, content and sensor networking and discuss these from both a technical as well as socio-economic perspective. Topics of Interest: We solicit contributions that report early results addressing research challenges in topics related to the network of the future. Particularly, we want to identify and address issues with a high potential for significant impacts on the way the network is functioning and being used. The workshop welcomes submissions from both researchers and practitioners but fresh ideas in the form of early results, position papers and systems papers are particularly welcome. WSNs are supposed to run long-lived applications. During operation, applications are likely to experience unpredictable environment conditions that require to dynamically change their behavior. With current reprogramming technology, such an adaptation is still an open issue, as it can be achieved either at the expense of significant energy consumption or through software complexity. The challenge is to achieve WSN systems that not only embed intelligence into environments, but also have embedded intelligence for reprogramming themselves after their deployment. The workshop aims at stimulating researchers and practitioners in embedded software, autonomic computing, ad-hoc networking and all other relevant areas to present their ideas and work in progress for advancing the technologies that enable adaptive WSN applications. The expected number of participants will be 15. The key advantages of these networks include allowing anywhere, anytime network connectivity with lack of centralized control, ownership, and regulatory influence; their ability to operate unattended in harsh environments in which contemporary human-in-the-loop monitoring schemes are risky, inefficient and sometimes infeasible; and ease of reconfiguration to fit specific application needs. However, the resource-constrained nature of the employed devices and the self-organization of the network, coupled with an often unattended deployment of a large population of nodes, pose non-conventional challenges and motivate the need for special techniques for dependable design and management of AHSNET. While a single sensor network typically provides access to information of a limited geographical area and selected types of sensor data, a GSN provides an application with uniform and transparent access to a multitude of individual sensor networks that may be geographically dispersed, aggregating and correlating different types of data as appropriate for the application. The challenges imposed by global sensor networks are relevant to many fields in computer communications and distributed systems such as sensor networks, complex event and stream processing, pervasive computing, and P2P overlays. This workshop intends to bring together researchers and practitioners working in relevant fields in order to share ideas, challenges and visions on Global Sensor Networks as well as to foster new cooperation. WORKSHOP TOPICS GSN09 is looking for contributions related but not limited to the following list of topics in the domain of Global Sensor Networks: - Sensor network protocols - Complex event processing - Distributed stream processing - P2P overlays - Middleware - Security - Query processing and optimization - Quality of service - Applications SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Papers should be submitted in PDF format via the workshop page. Contributions may present i) novel and possibly preliminary research results (full papers 12 pages, short papers 6 pages) , ii) position papers describing major challenges (6 pages), iii) new trends from the industry (2 pages). Each submission will be reviewed by three members of the program committee and are selected according to their originality, quality, and relevance to the workshop topics. Accepted papers will appear in the KIVS Workshop proceedings (publisher to be announced). For accepted papers at least one author must register with the workshop and give a presentation at the workshop. Submissions must follow the KIVS formatting guidelines and must not exceed the given page limits. Note that contributions in English as well as in German are welcome. While in the past entertainment technology traditionally offered predominantly passive experiences, continual advances in network and computer technologies are providing tools for implementing greater interactivity and for enabling consumers to enjoy more exciting experiences, such as, for example, interactive digital TV, interactive theatre and orchestrated music and sound design. This phenomenon is pulling together an extremely diverse group of experts specializing in different technical areas, such as networking, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, games, animation, multimedia design, human-computer interaction, educational media and software engineering. Even though high-tech entertainment promotes interdisciplinary fusion, yet only the ubiquity of wireless/wired communication is considered suitable for accepting the challenge of building a large interactive environment for the delivery of the maximum entertainment value to millions of consumers worldwide. In this respect, there is a great hope that the wired and wireless may take over this complex scenario for fulfilling the consumer expectations. Motivation The Internet architecture has been remarkably successful in allowing a planet-scale internetwork to form. However, this architecture is losing its original simplicity and transparency as new classes of applications, operational and management requirements, business models, security mechanisms and scalability enablers give rise to point solutions that extend the architecture without regard to the original design principles. While these mechanisms are necessary for Internet operation under current economical, technical and social conditions, their combination has significantly reduced the potential for incremental evolution of the Internet architecture. This loss of flexibility is already being felt as the number of Internet nodes grows by another order of magnitude. Several substantial Future Internet initiatives have started in Europe, the US and Asia, and the vendor and network operator communities are also actively discussing the limitations of the current Internet architecture as well as its potential evolution. This workshop will discuss what the real underlying problems are with the Internet and how we might fix them so that the Internet architecture re-gains its simplicity and transparency and is fit for another 30+ years, so that the architectural simplicity and clarity of the Internet can be regained and retained for another 30+ years. This workshop solicits original, high-quality papers that analyze, and discuss ideas for a new Internet architecture, including specific improvements to current Internet protocols, especially at the internetworking, transport and application layers, new internetworking components that integrate into the existing architecture and ideas for clean-slate internetworking architectures. While commercial MMVEs like World of Warcraft, Second Life, or Sony Home already exist, there are still a large number of open issues and important research questions that must be addressed in order to realize truly massive environments, both in terms of the size of the environment as well as the number of its concurrent users. The ultimate goal of this development is a worldwide system that spans whole virtual planets with many millions of users. To achieve this, systems must be developed that are - at the same time - extremely scalable, highly interactive, secure and reliable. They must support a consistent view of the environment for all users. Updates to the environment, both its infrastructure as well as its content, must be applied at runtime. The operation and further development of systems must be cost-effective and profitable, thus stimulating investment in them. Existing MMVEs are based on mostly static, fixed infrastructures, in which predefined server clusters are preassigned to different functions for operating the MMVE. Such systems are currently able to support thousands of concurrent users. This requires the system's operator to provide all necessary resources, like compute power, memory and network bandwidth. To become truly massive, future systems must be made much more flexible and must build on self-organising, adaptive systems. One promising approach is the use of peer-to-peer architectures, because a substatial amount of the necessary hardware resources are contributed by the users themselves. Thus the amount of resources in the system grows with the number of users. While peer-to-peer technology is already being used sucessfully today in many applications, e.g. for Internet telephony and the distribution of software updates, its applicability in highly interactive and distributed virtual 3D environments is still challenging and comprises numerous research and engineering challenges. The goal of this workshop is to gather researchers and practitioners in the area of MMVEs under one roof to discuss their findings, identify future research areas, incite collaborations, and move the state of the art forward. Topics ------ The workshop addresses the following topics related to building, operating, and using MMVEs: 1. Basic networking support, e.g. peer to peer networking for MMVEs, 2. MMVE hosting and software as a service (SAAS), 3. Bandwidth restricted (mobile) end user devices, 4. Self-organization and adaptation, 5. Placement and relocation strategies, 6. Scalability, 7. Interactivity, 8. Consistency, 9. Reliability and persistency, 10. Security and privacy, 11. Interoperability and integration of virtual environments, 12. User generated content, 13. Updating and content streaming, e.g. 3D streaming, 14. Evaluations and case studies of existing systems, 15. Development support and middleware platforms. Submission Guidelines ---------------------- Paper submissions must cover one of the topics listed above, or a closely-related one. We will prioritize experience papers describing lessons learnt from built systems, including information about approaches that did and did not work, unexpected results, common abstractions, and metrics for evaluating distributed virtual environment distribution approaches. One of the key issues to debate is the underlying structure of distributed virtual environment systems, which includes different possible configurations such as peer-to-peer, central-server-based, and hybrid models. Submitted papers should be about 10-12 pages long, use the ECEASST format and must be blinded (see the workshop web page for more info). Research papers must be original prior unpublished work and not under review elsewhere. All submissions will be peer-reviewed (double blind) and selected based on their originality, merit, and relevance to the workshop. Apologies for Multiple Copies Call for Papers The 3rd IEEE Workshop on Automotive Networking and Applications (AutoNet 2008) Co-located with IEEE GLOBECOM 2008 December 4, 2008 (Thursday) - New Orleans, LA, USA Coupled with advances in wireless communications and computing technologies, there have been significant recent efforts to enhance and integrate the communications and computing technologies into the vehicle and transportation systems to enhance vehicle safety, reduce traffic congestion, and protect environment. Significant industrial and governmental efforts are underway to push for vehicle-to-vehicle / vehicle-to-infrastructure networking functions in vehicles and highway infrastructure. When such communications and networking capabilities are integrated into vehicles and the infrastructure, not only safety but many other emerging applications can be supported for intelligent interactions with the transportation system, with other vehicles, and inside vehicles, to help with traffic management, vehicle diagnostics, mobile commerce, and much more. This one-day workshop intends to bring together researchers, professionals, and practitioners to discuss and address recent developments and challenges in deploying vehicle-to-vehicle / vehicle-to-infrastructure networking technologies and their applications. One key area of innovation has been around tangible computing, which pushes the user interface beyond the digital into the physical world. A closely related topic is that of embedded interaction where the everyday objects and environments we interact with are computationally augmented in new ways. Designing such systems requires interdisciplinary thinking. Their creation must not only encompass software, electronics, and mechanics, but also the system's physical form and behaviour, as well as its social impacts. After the big success of TEI'07 and TEI'08 we are pleased to announce the third international conference dedicated to presenting the latest results in tangible and embedded interaction. We invite submissions of work addressing HCI issues, design, user experience, tools and technologies, as well as interactive art in the broad area of tangible computing and embedded interactive systems. The intimate size of this single-track conference provides a unique forum for exchange of ideas through talks, interactive exhibits, demos, posters, art installations and performances. Summary and Topics: Thanks to technological advances, wired and wireless sensor networks are attracting an increasing attention that promotes their large-scale deployments in many applications, such as environmental monitoring, military surveillance, and scientific exploration. Continuous improvements are motivating works in addressing specific sensor network issues spanning hardware, network protocols, architecture, operating systems, and applications. Furthermore, emergent needs to fulfill a variety of heterogeneous requirements are highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary networks that control their processing and manage their resources by means of self-organizing techniques. These techniques particularly require sharing the decision-making process over hundreds of low-power, short lifetimes sensors. The achievement of this goal is still facing an urgent and challenging question on how to provide these spatially distributed sensors with reasonable autonomy that help them in performing the right action, at the right time for the sake of fulfilling current requirements while increasing the lifetime of the entire sensor network and guaranteeing reliable and enduring pathway communications. Automating the sensor network activities is also an urgent and challenging issue especially that commonly sensing devices are operating unattended in remote and hostile areas where manual maintenance is nearly impossible. Since predefined and late decisions do not help much in improving the efficiency of networked sensing devices, automation and autonomy are very important mechanisms in addressing upcoming developments that target multi-services, collaborating, or competing sensor networks. Call For Papers Wireless Personal Communications (Springer) Special Issue on “Cross-Layer Design for Future Generation Wireless Networks” With the rapid development of wireless technologies, the future generation wireless networks have more challenges for providing reliable and high quality end-to-end performance in wireless multimedia communications. Recently, a cross-layer design has become a popular topic in which more and more researchers are engaged. That leads to a lot of cross-layer design proposals for wireless networks. This special issue is intended to foster state-of-the-art research pertaining to cross-layer design in the area of future generation wireless networks. The emphasis of this special issue will be on cross-layer protocol interactions and design of cross-layer optimized techniques. The issue will focus on a range of future generation wireless networks cross-layer design related topics including network architectures, mobility management, session mobility, security mechanism, services, and novel applications associated with their utilization, and hybrid routing protocols for mobile wireless networks, e.g., cellular/WLAN/WiMAX/ad hoc networks. Submitted papers for this special issue are expected to focus on cross-layer design related to future generation wireless networks and to present novel results and solutions to solve various problems and challenges foreseen in future generation wireless networks. All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed. Final selection of papers will be based on their quality and relevance to this special issue as well as the journal. Based on short- to medium-range communication systems (vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside), vehicular networks will enable vehicular safety applications including collision and other safety warnings as well as non-safety applications like real-time traffic congestion and routing information, high-speed tolling, mobile infotainment, and many others. The creation of high-performance, highly reliable, highly scalable, and secure vehicular networks technologies, though, presents an extraordinary challenge to the wireless research community: a high degree of communication reliability is needed under unfavorable channel conditions. Clearly, the specificity of vehicular networks in terms of mobility behavior and applications scenarios and requirements makes vehicular networks research an exciting and demanding application- and purpose-driven sub-discipline of wireless networking. Call For Papers Ad Hoc Networks (Elsevier) Journal SPECIAL ISSUE: "Privacy and Security in Wireless Sensor and Ad Hoc Networks" Wireless sensor and ad hoc networks have many applications in military, homeland security and other areas. Security is critical for such networks deployed in a hostile environment. In civilian applications, however, privacy concerns of these networks could become a more serious impediment to their popular adoption. Providing privacy and security in wireless sensor and ad hoc networks is more challenging than those in traditional wired networks because wireless communications use shared medium and thus are vulnerable to many attacks. Providing privacy and security in sensor networks is further complicated by the network scale, the highly constrained system resources and the difficulty of dealing with node compromises. The main purpose of this special issue is to promote further research interests and activities on privacy and security in wireless sensor and ad hoc networks.
