E-Health is a field that embraces medical informatics, public health and business, referring to health services and information delivered or enhanced through the Internet and related technologies. In a broader sense, the term characterizes not only a technical development, but also a state-of-mind, a way of thinking, an attitude, and a commitment for networked, global thinking, to improve health care locally, regionally, and worldwide by using information and communication technology. With the rapid convergence of networks and applications, changes in related industries, more complex value chains and increased competition, early prototyping and experimentation will become a key means for driving innovation and development of market oriented solutions. In this context, value generation has shifted from network technologies towards applications and content. Thus, the nature and scope of testbeds have changed substantially in recent years from solely network technologies towards complex service delivery infrastructures riding on various networks. In contrast to traditional vendor, operator and technology specific "closed" testbeds, the notion of "open" testbeds has emerged. Many of these devices are highly mobile and autonomous, and must adapt to the surrounding environment in a totally unsupervised way. The fundamental research challenge is the design of robust decentralized computing systems, capable of operating under changing environments and noisy input, and yet exhibit the desired behavior and response time, under constraints such as energy consumption, size, and processing power. These systems should be able to adapt and learn how to react to unforeseen scenarios as well as to display properties comparable to social entities. Biological systems are able to handle many of these challenges with an elegance and efficiency still far beyond current human artifacts. Based on this observation, bio-inspired approaches have been proposed in the past years as a strategy to handle the complexity of such systems. The goal is to obtain methods on how to engineer technical solutions which have similar high stability and efficiency as biological entities often have. The BIONETICS conference aims at bringing together researchers and scientists from several disciplines in computer science and engineering where bio-inspired methods are investigated. The advances include WiFi (IEEE 802.11), WiMAX (IEEE 802.16), Wireless PAN (IEEE 802.15), sensor networks, Bluetooth, mesh/ad hoc networks, RFID, mobile IP, mobile management, smart antenna, Radio-over-fiber, OFDM/OFDMA, MIMO, cooperative communications, cognitive radio, and so on. These emerging technologies will significantly impact the design and operation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), which aims to effectively provide higher vehicles safety, traffic management, and communications among vehicles and transport infrastructure. Currently, governmental institutes and societies in North America, Europe, Japan, and China, etc., are actively developing advanced wireless technologies for road, rail and maritime transport systems. For instance, the Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) band has been allocated in the USA at 5.9 GHz for vehicle-to-roadside (V2R) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications. The IEEE 802.11p working group is developing enhancements of 802.11 standards to support ITS, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), vehicular telematics, and infotainment applications. This workshop covers the area of wireless communications technologies for ITS applications. It will bring together researchers to present new results and describe work in progress to reflect the latest advances in the state of the art in design, modeling, simulation, and applications of this area. It has also brought many challenges for the communication and networking community to address. On one hand we see present day mobile devices are capable of providing many services that required several devices before. For example, most cell phones nowadays provide high speed data access, still and video cameras, PDA functionality, etc. These advances in device sophistication and service offerings, including wireless hotspots, have made a difference in the way we communicate. With increased user mobility and user's desire to always be connected, we have seen a growing interest in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Body Area Networks (BANs). These networks can be tuned and applied meaningfully for individual users and their requirements. On the other hand the Internet has changed our way of interacting dramatically. These two major communication areas are having an in-depth influence on the way we communicate; it is worth considering them 'together' as the future communication vehicle. Personalized Networks is one such future oriented concept where we seek to bring BANs, PANs, WLAN, sensor networks, ad hoc networks, home networks, vehicular networks and the Internet together onto one platform under one broader vision of future (4G) communication networks. The idea is to enable continuous and seamless connectivity of all the personal devices of a user, information sources, and network enabled controllers in an unobtrusive way, regardless of where these entities are located - be they local or remote. It is a microcosm of the persons themselves with their associated accessories somewhere on the Internet. It is equivalent to the Internet presence that has become a prominent concept in the last decade. This advanced overlay network is strongly person oriented and must be ad hoc, intelligent and must behave as a user-friendly virtual intelligent personal assistant to its owner. It is a personal distributed environment, global in scope that can co-exist on the present day Internet with its active participation. Such a platform enables many new applications, especially for users with rapidly changing communication demands that often operate in various contexts simultaneously. It can also provide the much needed user-friendliness to many services of today. There are numerous issues which are challenging to the communication network community in realizing a Personalized Network. Most of them arise from the lack of current technology to deal in a transparent way with the dynamic and mobile nature of the entities, the unpredictable topology of the network, the power constraints of the mobile devices, and the heterogeneity of the networking and link-level technologies. Therefore, creating a Personalized Network yields new architectures, protocols, algorithms, platforms, middleware, etc. They take care of addressing, routing, resource and service discovery, the self-organization of the network, the localization of the devices/person, the complex security and privacy requirements, the offering of context aware services and service management. Many of these issues, ventured upon earlier under various mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) and mobile network research initiatives, need to be reconsidered in this case. These technologies have to meet strict requirements with respect to user perception, viable business models, usage of communication bandwidth, protocol complexity, robustness, availability of links and infrastructure, dependability and trust. Four broader areas under which the presentations are classified: * Architectures and systems * End-to-end networking * Security and privacy * Operations, administration, management, and provisioning Scope of the submission We seek original contributions which are aimed at finding solutions to the problems that are outlined above towards realization of a Personalized Network. We have identified the following major topics under which we try to categorize the submissions. However, we will consider any other original, interesting, and imaginative ideas and thoughts towards meeting this goal of a Personalized Network. * The architectural framework of personalized networks * Context awareness and support * Resource, service and context discovery * Self-organization and adaptation * Addressing and routing * Interworking between PANs, ad hoc networks, etc, and infrastructure-based heterogeneous networks * Mobility of personalized networks * Security, privacy and accounting * Zero configuration methods and other enablers for ease-of-use * Dependability * Context-aware and application-driven communication substrates * Interactions between persons through their networks, federations of such networks * Handling of QoS across heterogeneous and dynamically changing link layers * New QoS concepts in personalized networks * Mapping of functional requirements to physical devices and resources * Modeling and simulation of personalized networks * P2P paradigm in personalized networks * Innovative applications or prototypes and demonstrations of such person centric applications are equally valued Why should you participate in this workshop? Personalized Networks is a concrete vision of the future networks, yet very current, in the field of communications. It attracts researchers from both wired and wireless domains. This workshop is an ideal platform to share a vision of where we are heading, interact, and strongly advocate an exciting new avenue for researchers and practitioners in the field of communication. Further, the final program will consist of carefully selected - with at least three peer reviews - and high quality submissions with a large emphasis on new ideas rather than incremental contributions to the field. Summary and Topics: Thanks to technological advances, wired and wireless sensor networks are attracting an increasing attention that promotes their large-scale deployments in many applications, such as environmental monitoring, military surveillance, and scientific exploration. Continuous improvements are motivating works in addressing specific sensor network issues spanning hardware, network protocols, architecture, operating systems, and applications. Furthermore, emergent needs to fulfill a variety of heterogeneous requirements are highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary networks that control their processing and manage their resources by means of self-organizing techniques. These techniques particularly require sharing the decision-making process over hundreds of low-power, short lifetimes sensors. The achievement of this goal is still facing an urgent and challenging question on how to provide these spatially distributed sensors with reasonable autonomy that help them in performing the right action, at the right time for the sake of fulfilling current requirements while increasing the lifetime of the entire sensor network and guaranteeing reliable and enduring pathway communications. Automating the sensor network activities is also an urgent and challenging issue especially that commonly sensing devices are operating unattended in remote and hostile areas where manual maintenance is nearly impossible. Since predefined and late decisions do not help much in improving the efficiency of networked sensing devices, automation and autonomy are very important mechanisms in addressing upcoming developments that target multi-services, collaborating, or competing sensor networks. V-Winets and V-ITS aim to ensure traffic safety for drivers, provide comfort for passengers and reduce transportation time and fuel consumption with many potential applications. For instance, vehicular safety applications include automatic collision notification, heavy fog detection and notification, remote diagnostics, emergency management, and other assistances for safe driving. Non-safety applications include real-time traffic congestion notification, location-based driver information services, high-speed tolling, vehicle tracking, automobile high speed Internet access, in-place traffic view, and many others. To facilitate these applications, many different types of communications and networking would be involved, including intra-vehicle, vehicle-to-vehicle (V-to-V), vehicle-to-roadside (V-to-R) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V-to-I) communications for V-Winet and V-ITS to provide timely information or Internet access to vehicles, drivers, and passengers. Consequently, V-Winet and V-ITS need to integrate existing networking technologies, such as IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11p, DSRC, 3G, IEEE 802.16, Bluetooth, Sensor networks, and ZigBee for easy, accurate, effective and simple communications among vehicles, users, and infrastructure networks. At present, more people interact through media and less in a face-to-face manner. Another trend is that people lead less active lifestyles. At the same time, new technologies provide novel entertainment and interaction opportunities. We aim to combine these trends and explore the opportunities that technology-driven physical play offers for enhancing and stimulating real social interaction (as opposed to virtual interaction through a computer). This can be beneficial for diverse reasons: For children to counter the trend of playing computer games and watching television on their own, for elderly to socialize more when making new contacts becomes more difficult and for autistic children because they particularly like technological toys. The main goal of the workshop is to share information and experiences among researchers in the area of social interaction through physical play. We invite position papers addressing social and physical issues including (but not restricted to) the following fields: - Social robotics - Design for diverse user groups, such as children and elderly - Social games - Creative toolkits - Exertion interfaces - Pervasive and head-up games - Embodied facilitation - Spatial and tangible interaction Paper contributions should be submitted by email to one of the organizers. Papers should be 4-6 pages in PDF format LNCS style. Contributions will be reviewed by an international program committee. This workshop solicits papers concerned with what happens on top of and around the anonymizing layer, with a view of how this affects the anonymity system. Pervasive computing and communications is a natural outcome of the tremendous advances of a broad spectrum of technologies including wireless and sensor networks, mobile and distributed computing, and agent technologies. Call for Papers The 2nd International Workshop on Peer-to-Peer Networked Virtual Environments in conjunction with The 14th International Conference on Parallel and Distributed Systems (ICPADS 2008) December 8 -10, 2008 Melbourne, Victoria, AUSTRALIA http://acnlab.csie.ncu.edu.tw/P2PNVE2008/ PURPOSE AND SCOPE The rapid growth and popularity of networked virtual environments (NVEs) such as Massively Multiplayer Online Games (MMOGs) in recent years have spawned a series of research interests in constructing such large-scale virtual environments. For increasing scalability and decreasing the cost of management and deployment, more and more studies propose using peer-to-peer (P2P) architectures to construct large-scale NVEs for games, multimedia virtual worlds and other applications. The goal of such research may be to support an Earth-scale virtual environment or to make hosting virtual worlds more affordable than existing client-server approaches. However, existing solutions for consistency control, persistent data storage, multimedia data dissemination, and cheat-prevention may not be straightforwardly adapted to such new environments, novel ideas and designs thus are needed to realize the potential of P2P-based NVEs. The 1st International Workshop on Peer-to-Peer Networked Virtual Environments (P2P-NVE 2007) was held in Hsinchu, Taiwan, in 2007. To adhere to the theme of P2P-NVE 2007, the theme of P2P-NVE 2008 is to solicit original and previously unpublished new ideas on general P2P schemes and on the design and realization of P2P-based NVEs. The workshops aim to facilitate discussions and idea exchanges by both academics and practitioners. Student participations are also strongly encouraged. Based on short- to medium-range communication systems (vehicle-to- vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside), vehicular networks will enable vehicular safety applications including collision and other safety warnings as well as non-safety applications like real-time traffic congestion and routing information, high-speed tolling, mobile infotainment, and many others. The creation of high-performance, highly reliable, highly scalable, and secure vehicular networks technologies, though, presents an extraordinary challenge to the wireless research community: a high degree of communication reliability is needed under unfavorable channel conditions. Clearly, the specificity of vehicular networks in terms of mobility behavior and applications scenarios and requirements makes vehicular networks research an exciting and demanding application- and purpose-driven sub-discipline of wireless networking. And the message was literacy, media democracy and music charts. Mostly one single distinguishable media such as TV, the Web, the radio, or books transmitted the message. No in the age of ubiquitous and pervasive computing, where information flows through a plethora of distributed interlinked media - what is the message ambient media will tell us? What means semantic in this context? Which experiences will it open to us? What is content in the age of ambient media? Ambient media are embedded throughout the natural environment of the consumer - in his home, in his car, in restaurants, and on his mobile device. Predominant sample services are smart wallpapers in homes, location based services, RFID based entertainment services for children, or intelligent homes. The distribution of the medium throughout the natural environment implies a paradigm change of how to think about content. Until recently, content was identified as single entities to information - a video stream, audio stream, TV broadcast. However, in the age of ambient media, the notion of content extends from the single entity thinking towards a plethora of sensor networks, smart devices, personalized services, and media embedded in the natural environment of the user. The consumer actively participates and co-designs contextual media experience One example is e.g. location based information. Initiatives as the smart Web considering location based tagging for web-pages underline this development. This multidisciplinary workshop aims to address the challenges: - how to select, compose, and generate ambient content? - how to present ambient content? - how to re-use ambient content and learning experiences? - what are the characteristics of ambient media, its content, and technology? - how can collaborative, participatory, or social media service better supported and extended? - and what are ambient media in terms of story-telling, interactive, and art? The workshop aims at a series, and at the creation of a think-tank of creative thinkers coming from technology, art, human-computer interaction, and social sciences, that are interested in glimpsing the future of semantic ambient intelligent empowered media technology. We are aiming at multidisciplinary, highly future oriented submissions that help to develop the 'ambient media form' for entertainment services, such as: . case-studies (successful, and especially unsuccessful ones) . oral presentation of fresh and innovative ideas . artistic installations and running system prototypes . user-experience studies and evaluations . technological novelties, evaluations, and solutions The following (and related) topics are within the scope of this workshop and shall act as examples: . The necessity for and expected benefit of self-organization is caused by the growing scale, complexity, and heterogeneity of future networked systems, like the future Internet. For example, these networks will consist of interconnected infrastructure-based, mobile ad-hoc, and sensor networks that could be spontaneously deployed in hostile environments, have a dynamic population and a potentially short life time. In spite of this, there will be stringent user requirements, such as resilience and real-time guarantees. Although self-organization is desirable for these kinds of networks, it is not yet clear to what extent self-organization can be exploited. Research into networked systems has recently started to systematically investigate self-organization, which has lead to a multitude of open research issues. The applicability of well-known self-organizing techniques to specific networks and networked systems has to be investigated, as well as adaptations and novel approaches inspired by, e.g., cooperation in nature and evolutionary dynamics, sociology, and game theory. Additionally, models originating from areas like feedback control and complex system's research, are required for these networked systems in order to analyze their controllability and emergent behavior. Aspects of engineering self-organizing networked systems should be studied that discuss paradigms like programmable networks, and tools and frameworks for deploying, testing, and monitoring self-organizing networks. The role of self-organization in the future Internet and the impact on its architecture is an important topic, as well as the application of self-organization in future intelligent transportation systems and vehicular ad-hoc networks. Call for Demos 7th International Conference on AD HOC Networks & Wireless, AdHoc-NOW 2008 (http://www-sop.inria.fr/mascotte/adhocnow/index.html) September 10-12, Sophia Antipolis, France Overview Ad HOC-NOW 2008 solicits demonstrations showing innovative research and applications. V-Winets and V-ITS aim to ensure traffic safety for drivers, provide comfort for passengers and reduce transportation time and fuel consumption with many potential applications. For instance, vehicular safety applications include automatic collision notification, heavy fog detection and notification, remote diagnostics, emergency management, and other assistances for safe driving. Non-safety applications include real-time traffic congestion notification, location-based driver information services, high-speed tolling, vehicle tracking, automobile high speed Internet access, in-place traffic view, and many others. To facilitate these applications, many different types of communications and networking would be involved, including intra-vehicle, vehicle-to-vehicle (V-to-V), vehicle-to-roadside (V-to-R) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V-to-I) communications for V-Winet and V-ITS to provide timely information or Internet access to vehicles, drivers, and passengers. Consequently, V-Winet and V-ITS need to integrate existing networking technologies, such as IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11p, DSRC, 3G, IEEE 802.16, Bluetooth, Sensor networks, and ZigBee for easy, accurate, effective and simple communications among vehicles, users, and infrastructure networks. This special issue aims to foster the dissemination of high-quality, original, unpublished research covering all aspects of V-Winet and V-ITS communications, networking, and applications. Tokyo, Japan http://loca2009.context-aware.org Submission deadline: December 18, 2008 ********************************************************************* The 2009 Symposium on Location and Context Awareness (LoCA) seeks new and significant research on systems, services, and applications to detect, interpret and use location and other contextual information. Context includes physiological, environmental and computational data whether sensed or inferred. In addition, context includes users' activities, goals, abilities, preferences, interruptibility, affordances, and surroundings. With context, we can expect computers to deliver information, services, and entertainment in a way that maximizes convenience and minimizes intrusion. Developing awareness involves research in sensing, systems, machine learning, human computer interaction, and design. We seek technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research results. We are especially interested in submissions in the following areas but welcome submissions from other areas that are relevant to the theme of the symposium: - New hardware platforms for sensing location and context - Machine learning techniques for inferring user location and context from low-level sensor data - Location and context representation, management, and distribution - Privacy policies & communication protocols for location & context information - User studies of location- and context-aware systems - Industrial case studies of end-to-end systems One paper will be elected for a Best Paper Award by the LoCA program committee and is designed to recognize outstanding work. In addition, a combination of the LoCA program committee and all symposium participants will elect the recipient of the Best Presentation Award following the symposium. Both awards will be made during the symposium. Paper Submission Guidelines All papers will be reviewed by our international program committee. LoCA 2009 aims to be selective and the committee will favor a technically robust program. The ideal LoCA submission should provide an insightful survey of existing work, introduce radically new concepts, or present concrete, significant, transferable research based on the implementation and evaluation of a working system. Accepted papers will be presented by their authors at the LoCA Symposium in the Tokyo. Submissions must be formatted in Springer LNCS style, limited to 18 pages. Submit papers as Adobe PDF via EDAS at http://www.edas.info/newPaper.php?c=6603. Preparation of the camera-ready version of accepted papers may be shepherded by the program committee. Best regards, Sven Tomforde ===================== CALL FOR PAPERS IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (JSAC) BIO-INSPIRED NETWORKING Technology is taking us to a world where myriads of massively networked devices interact with the physical world in multiple ways, and at multiple scales, from the global Internet down to micro- and nano-devices. Many of these devices are highly mobile and autonomous, and must adapt to the surrounding environment in a totally distributed and unsupervised way. Recently, a number of approaches inspired by biological mechanisms and phenomena have been proposed as a strategy to handle the complexity of massively distributed systems such as the Internet, or wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. The goal of bio-inspired approaches is to discover and to adapt biological methods to technical solutions that are showing similarly high stability, adaptability, and scalability as biological entities often have. This special issue intends to highlight the latest achievements in the new research domain of bio-inspired networking. In particular, the issue focuses on methodologies for identifying relevant biological mechanisms, the modeling of these mechanisms, and their application to technical solutions. Prospective articles are expected to outline either proof of concept studies with direct comparison to classical technical solutions, or theoretical mathematical models of biological principles associated with fundamental challenges in communication systems. For this special issue, we consider all techniques with direct biological background including animal learning strategies, self-organizing methods as observed from swarms down to nano-structures that are observed and analyzed in molecular biology. Classical complex systems research is explicitly excluded from the scope whereas a comparison to well-known techniques in this domain is appreciated. This special issue is dedicated to bio-inspired approaches addressing various aspects of networking and communication systems. The topics of interest include the following domains: Self-organizing communication systems Evolutionary and adaptive systems and protocols Scalable systems and protocols Self-learning algorithms Self-healing systems and protocols Security mechanisms Network algorithms and protocols Scalable and adaptive network architectures Congestion control mechanisms Performance evaluation of bio-inspired networks Original unpublished contributions, and invited articles will be considered for the issue. The papers should be formatted according to IEEE-JSAC guidelines. The main focus of this workshop is on simulation of wireless multi-hop networks. The SWiN workshop is devoted to the topic of wireless multi-hop network simulators. An efficient and accurate simulation of these networks raises various issues which generally need to be addressed from several research domains simultaneously. As examples, we can consider the wireless physical layer modeling and simulation, the support of large scale networks, the simulation of complex R/F systems such as MIMO ones, the emulation of wireless nodes, etc. In particular but not exclusively, the Program Committee will be seeking high quality papers on the following aspects of wireless network simulation: - Radio medium modeling & simulation; - Scalability, large scale networks support; - Validation of simulators and simulation results; - Simulators benchmarking and comparisons; - Support of advanced R/F systems (MIMO, smart-antenna); - Support of distributed physical layer schemes (distributed signal processing, cooperative schemes); - Wireless node simulation or emulation; - Interoperability of simulators, emulators and experiments; - Distributed simulation; - Implementation of simulators. This workshop will be an opportunity to present the current works in these domains as well as to foster discussion and cooperation among researchers coming from the fields of simulation, radio medium modeling, ad hoc networking and wireless sensor networking. It will also be the occasion for people directly involved in the development and implementation of simulators to meet and confront their work with the models, applications and requests coming from the research communities that effectively use the simulators. In addition to contributed talks, the workshop program will include two tutorials on wireless physical layer modeling and wireless network simulators. SWiN 2008 will be held in Avignon, in the "Provence" part of Southern France. Avignon is known for its "Palais des Papes" (Palace of the Popes), where the Popes lived for much of the 14th century. Even though 4G standard is currently not defined, there are many current outlooks that delineate the vision of the new wireless technologies. Based on the emergent trends of mobile communication, 4G will have larger bandwidth, higher data rates, smoother and quicker handoff and will focus on guaranteeing faultless service and seamless handoff across a multitude of wireless networks. The key concept is integrating the 4G capabilities with all of the existing mobile technologies. Special maneuvers will be necessary amongst different access systems in terms of horizontal (intrasystem) and vertical (inter-system) handoff as well as seamless mobility, Quality of Service (QoS), dependability and security. The necessity for and expected benefit of self-organization is caused by the growing scale, complexity, and heterogeneity of future networked systems, like the future Internet. For example, these networks will consist of interconnected infrastructure-based, mobile ad-hoc, and sensor networks that could be spontaneously deployed in hostile environments, have a dynamic population and a potentially short life time. In spite of this, there will be stringent user requirements, such as resilience and real-time guarantees. Although self-organization is desirable for these kinds of networks, it is not yet clear to what extent self-organization can be exploited. Research into networked systems has recently started to systematically investigate self-organization, which has lead to a multitude of open research issues. The applicability of well-known self-organizing techniques to specific networks and networked systems has to be investigated, as well as adaptations and novel approaches inspired by, e.g., cooperation in nature and evolutionary dynamics, sociology, and game theory. Additionally, models originating from areas like feedback control and complex system's research, are required for these networked systems in order to analyze their controllability and emergent behavior. Aspects of engineering self-organizing networked systems should be studied that discuss paradigms like programmable networks, and tools and frameworks for deploying, testing, and monitoring self-organizing networks. The role of self-organization in the future Internet and the impact on its architecture is an important topic, as well as the application of self-organization in future intelligent transportation systems and vehicular ad-hoc networks. Significant industrial and governmental efforts are underway to push for vehicle-to-vehicle / vehicle-to-infrastructure networking functions in vehicles and highway infrastructure. Aus den eingereichten Beiträgen wählt das Moderatoren- und Organisationsteam dann die Teilnehmer aus (Benachrichtigung bis spätestens zum 22. Juli 2008) Ablauf ====== Das Seminar findet als Teil der Tagung Mensch und Computer 2008 am Sonntag, den 07. September 2008, in Lübeck statt. Während des Seminars stellen sich die Doktoranden (kurz) gegenseitig die jeweiligen Arbeiten vor und es besteht ausreichend Zeit zur Diskussion untereinander und mit den Moderatoren.

Call for Papers Submission Deadline - 15 June 2008 IEEE Communications Magazine Feature Topic on Advances in Cooperative and Relay Communications In wireless networks, relays have been traditionally used to extend the range of communication systems. However, in recent years, other applications of relay communications have emerged. One such emerging application is to assist in the communication between the source and destination via some cooperation protocol. By controlling medium access between source and relays coupled with the appropriate modulation or coding in such cooperative schemes, it has been found that the diversity of the system can be improved. In multi-user systems, different users can also act as cooperative partners or relays to share resources and assist each other in information transmission, thereby creating a cooperative network. One other emerging application is the exchange of information between multiple users through relay(s). In such cases, by exploiting the knowledge of one's own transmitted signal, the throughput of these systems can be drastically increased. For cooperative and relay communications, the MAC layer also has many unique features. The MAC in this case, is concerned with more than one hop communication, is distributed and cooperative and works for multipoint-to-multipoint communication. The MAC also needs to have knowledge about network topology and account for node mobility. Accordingly, a new design of the MAC layer has to be devised to include new functionalities as well as MAC layer routing. With the large benefits to be reaped from employing cooperative and relay techniques, several standardization groups, such as IEEE 802.16 and IEEE 802.11, have started standardization processes to include such technologies into their prevailing standards. These efforts will no doubt attract even more interests from the academia and industry, advancing cooperative and relay technologies even further in the coming years. With interests from both the research and industrial communities gaining momentum, there is an urgent need to better understand as well as to keep track of cutting edge research in cooperative and relay communications. We plan this special issue to help address that need, as well as to help researchers looking to jump on the bandwagon. Therefore, the special issue will focus on recent advances as well as survey papers in cooperative and relay communications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following topics: . Cooperative algorithms and protocols . Partner(s) selection in cooperative relay and routing . Cooperative resource allocation and management . Relay strategies for cooperative communications . Cooperative and relay technologies applied to WLAN, WMAN and cellular networks . Multidirectional relaying . Distributed coding and modulation . Multiple antenna systems and protocols for cooperative communications . Information theoretic aspects of cooperative communications . MAC issues and MAC layer routing . There is a lack of well-established principles for guiding the design of networks for manageability. There is also a lack of scientific theories for analyzing the state of a network and for the evolution of network state. The Internet Network Management (INM) workshop provides an opportunity to elevate participants' collective experience with IP networks into ideas, principles, and theories that can be leveraged in today's networks, or can be carried forward into the clean-slate design of future networks that intrinsically support management, rather than treating management as a bolted-on afterthought. The INM workshop seeks original and thought provoking ideas, case studies, experimental results, position papers, and clean-slate designs.
