While commercial MMVEs like World of Warcraft, Second Life, or Sony Home already exist, there are still a large number of open issues and important research questions that must be addressed in order to realize truly massive environments, both in terms of the size of the environment as well as the number of its concurrent users. The ultimate goal of this development is a worldwide system that spans whole virtual planets with many millions of users. To achieve this, systems must be developed that are - at the same time - extremely scalable, highly interactive, secure and reliable. They must support a consistent view of the environment for all users. Updates to the environment, both its infrastructure as well as its content, must be applied at runtime. The operation and further development of systems must be cost-effective and profitable, thus stimulating investment in them. Existing MMVEs are based on mostly static, fixed infrastructures, in which predefined server clusters are preassigned to different functions for operating the MMVE. Such systems are currently able to support thousands of concurrent users. This requires the system's operator to provide all necessary resources, like compute power, memory and network bandwidth. To become truly massive, future systems must be made much more flexible and must build on self-organising, adaptive systems. One promising approach is the use of peer-to-peer architectures, because a substatial amount of the necessary hardware resources are contributed by the users themselves. Thus the amount of resources in the system grows with the number of users. While peer-to-peer technology is already being used sucessfully today in many applications, e.g. for Internet telephony and the distribution of software updates, its applicability in highly interactive and distributed virtual 3D environments is still challenging and comprises numerous research and engineering challenges. The goal of this workshop is to gather researchers and practitioners in the area of MMVEs under one roof to discuss their findings, identify future research areas, incite collaborations, and move the state of the art forward. Topics ------ The workshop addresses the following topics related to building, operating, and using MMVEs: 1. Basic networking support, e.g. peer to peer networking for MMVEs, 2. MMVE hosting and software as a service (SAAS), 3. Bandwidth restricted (mobile) end user devices, 4. Self-organization and adaptation, 5. Placement and relocation strategies, 6. Scalability, 7. Interactivity, 8. Consistency, 9. Reliability and persistency, 10. Security and privacy, 11. Interoperability and integration of virtual environments, 12. User generated content, 13. Updating and content streaming, e.g. 3D streaming, 14. Evaluations and case studies of existing systems, 15. Development support and middleware platforms. Submission Guidelines ---------------------- Paper submissions must cover one of the topics listed above, or a closely-related one. We will prioritize experience papers describing lessons learnt from built systems, including information about approaches that did and did not work, unexpected results, common abstractions, and metrics for evaluating distributed virtual environment distribution approaches. One of the key issues to debate is the underlying structure of distributed virtual environment systems, which includes different possible configurations such as peer-to-peer, central-server-based, and hybrid models. Submitted papers should be about 10-12 pages long, use the ECEASST format and must be blinded (see the workshop web page for more info). Research papers must be original prior unpublished work and not under review elsewhere. All submissions will be peer-reviewed (double blind) and selected based on their originality, merit, and relevance to the workshop. All accepted papers must be presented at the workshop and will be published in the Open-Access Journal "Electronic Communications of the EASST" (ECEASST) (http://eceasst.cs.tu-berlin.de/index.php/eceasst). Apologies for Multiple Copies Call for Papers The 3rd IEEE Workshop on Automotive Networking and Applications (AutoNet 2008) Co-located with IEEE GLOBECOM 2008 December 4, 2008 (Thursday) - New Orleans, LA, USA Coupled with advances in wireless communications and computing technologies, there have been significant recent efforts to enhance and integrate the communications and computing technologies into the vehicle and transportation systems to enhance vehicle safety, reduce traffic congestion, and protect environment. Significant industrial and governmental efforts are underway to push for vehicle-to-vehicle / vehicle-to-infrastructure networking functions in vehicles and highway infrastructure. When such communications and networking capabilities are integrated into vehicles and the infrastructure, not only safety but many other emerging applications can be supported for intelligent interactions with the transportation system, with other vehicles, and inside vehicles, to help with traffic management, vehicle diagnostics, mobile commerce, and much more. This one-day workshop intends to bring together researchers, professionals, and practitioners to discuss and address recent developments and challenges in deploying vehicle-to-vehicle / vehicle-to-infrastructure networking technologies and their applications. Summary and Topics: Thanks to technological advances, wired and wireless sensor networks are attracting an increasing attention that promotes their large-scale deployments in many applications, such as environmental monitoring, military surveillance, and scientific exploration. Continuous improvements are motivating works in addressing specific sensor network issues spanning hardware, network protocols, architecture, operating systems, and applications. Furthermore, emergent needs to fulfill a variety of heterogeneous requirements are highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary networks that control their processing and manage their resources by means of self-organizing techniques. These techniques particularly require sharing the decision-making process over hundreds of low-power, short lifetimes sensors. The achievement of this goal is still facing an urgent and challenging question on how to provide these spatially distributed sensors with reasonable autonomy that help them in performing the right action, at the right time for the sake of fulfilling current requirements while increasing the lifetime of the entire sensor network and guaranteeing reliable and enduring pathway communications. Automating the sensor network activities is also an urgent and challenging issue especially that commonly sensing devices are operating unattended in remote and hostile areas where manual maintenance is nearly impossible. Since predefined and late decisions do not help much in improving the efficiency of networked sensing devices, automation and autonomy are very important mechanisms in addressing upcoming developments that target multi-services, collaborating, or competing sensor networks. Call For Papers Wireless Personal Communications (Springer) Special Issue on “Cross-Layer Design for Future Generation Wireless Networks” With the rapid development of wireless technologies, the future generation wireless networks have more challenges for providing reliable and high quality end-to-end performance in wireless multimedia communications. Recently, a cross-layer design has become a popular topic in which more and more researchers are engaged. That leads to a lot of cross-layer design proposals for wireless networks. This special issue is intended to foster state-of-the-art research pertaining to cross-layer design in the area of future generation wireless networks. The emphasis of this special issue will be on cross-layer protocol interactions and design of cross-layer optimized techniques. The issue will focus on a range of future generation wireless networks cross-layer design related topics including network architectures, mobility management, session mobility, security mechanism, services, and novel applications associated with their utilization, and hybrid routing protocols for mobile wireless networks, e.g., cellular/WLAN/WiMAX/ad hoc networks. Submitted papers for this special issue are expected to focus on cross-layer design related to future generation wireless networks and to present novel results and solutions to solve various problems and challenges foreseen in future generation wireless networks. All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed. Final selection of papers will be based on their quality and relevance to this special issue as well as the journal. Based on short- to medium-range communication systems (vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-roadside), vehicular networks will enable vehicular safety applications including collision and other safety warnings as well as non-safety applications like real-time traffic congestion and routing information, high-speed tolling, mobile infotainment, and many others. The creation of high-performance, highly reliable, highly scalable, and secure vehicular networks technologies, though, presents an extraordinary challenge to the wireless research community: a high degree of communication reliability is needed under unfavorable channel conditions. Clearly, the specificity of vehicular networks in terms of mobility behavior and applications scenarios and requirements makes vehicular networks research an exciting and demanding application- and purpose-driven sub-discipline of wireless networking. Topics of Interest ----------------- Original papers addressing applications and architecture, systems and protocols design, development and analysis, in all areas related to Vehicular Networking are solicited. Security is critical for such networks deployed in a hostile environment. In civilian applications, however, privacy concerns of these networks could become a more serious impediment to their popular adoption. Providing privacy and security in wireless sensor and ad hoc networks is more challenging than those in traditional wired networks because wireless communications use shared medium and thus are vulnerable to many attacks. All these applications share a basic requirement, i.e. broadband services. Indeed, driven by the rapid growing demand of multimedia service, broadband Internet access is now a common setup for many Internet users in modern cities. In May 2008, US broadband penetration has reached 89.3% among active Internet users. Nevertheless, despite the high data rate, the broadband multimedia services are not satisfactory. For example, a computer may enjoy a 100Mbps of data rate connection to the Internet. However, even streaming 500kbps of a video clip may still suffer from occasion playback interruptions. This is mainly due to lack of QoS support in the Internet. Here is just one example to show the challenge of providing good-quality broadband multimedia services. The situation becomes even more challenging when we consider a variety of networks, diverse end users, notorious wireless channels, mobility, inter-networking, co-existence of different types of traffic, etc. The goal of this special issue is to solicit the state-of-the-art approaches and technical solutions in the area of network technologies for emerging broadband multimedia services. The issue will provide a convincing forum for researchers and practitioners to present their latest research results. Our Apologies in case of multiple receptions IEEE Network Special Issue on Networking over Multi-Hop Cognitive Networks Background In recent years, the exponential growth of unlicensed band usage has prompted possible wireless spectrum shortage. Moreover, today's wireless networks are characterized by fixed spectrum assignment policies, which often lead to wasting large spectrum portions due to sporadic utilization of the licensed users (according to FCC, only 15% to 85% of the licensed spectrum is utilized on the average). This situation has motivated and pushed forward the development of novel low-power wireless Cognitive Radio transceivers with the capability of changing their transmitter parameters (operating spectrum, modulation, transmission power and communication technology) based on interaction with the surrounding environment. Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) based on nodes equipped with cognitive transceivers have consequently emerged as viable architectural solutions to solve current wireless network problems resulting from the limited available spectrum and the inefficiency in the spectrum usage by exploiting the existing wireless spectrum opportunistically. Scope and Contributions This special issue aims to consolidate and disseminate the latest developments and advances in the emerging area of Multi-hop CRNs, which is defined as a collection of cognitive transceiver-equipped nodes forming a multi-hop communication network. The main focus of this special issue is on networking aspects of multi-hop CRNs where the information needs to be relayed over multiple wireless links. The operation of Multi-hop CRNs is not limited to the discovery and allocation of wireless resources while avoiding service disruption for primary users. Additional tasks must be accomplished to sustain end-to-end communication, including identification of sets of relay nodes, ensuring that required bandwidth is available over all necessary links, and regulating resource sharing among all flows in the network. Most importantly, these goals must be achieved while coping with negative effects of frequent link outages due to primary user access. Preferably, the multi-hop CRN must also ensure that flow requirements, such as bandwidth, delay, and jitter bounds, are met. This special issue provides opportunities for the research community, the standardization bodies, and the industry to showcase the-state-of-the-art of the research on networking aspects of Multi-hop CRNs, implementation studies, and feasibility analyses. Moreover, since the success of CRN also depends on spectrum regulatory aspect, we also solicit critical contributions addressing the Multi-hop CRM architecture as it relates to spectrum competition under regulated, partially regulated or unregulated competitive environments. While the nature of the multi-hop CRNs necessitates high levels of interaction and dependency between the physical layer and protocols and solutions at MAC layer and above, the main focus of this special issue is the networking aspects of multi-hop CRNs. Therefore, the design of cognitive transceivers and hardware, signal processing techniques, modulation and coding methods, physical layer channel models, as well as networking issues primarily concerning single-hop CRNs fall outside the scope of the special issue. We solicit papers written in a tutorial and survey style, accessible to the non-expert, presenting the state of the art. And in the July issue, watch for a full page informative ad. Industry-university connection is emerging as a defining characteristic of ANTS. In south-east Asia and especially India, a huge telecom and datacom initiative is building. There is a need for industry-academia exchange of views to define research problems and agendas that have intellectual value and also address practical burning issues. ANTS 2007 facilitated this process to a level well beyond the usual for academic conferences. IEEE ANTS 2008 is planned to continue this process, with special sessions targeted toward identifying fruitful issues for collaboration. ANTS is the Indian academic conference where industry comes to listen and talk. As before, ANTS will have some resources for offsetting registration costs on a need basis. The registration costs are already low - last year's figures were USD 250 for IEEE members (300 for non-members), and USD 125 for students (lower for domestic students - as low as USD 40). This year's details will be announced soon - watch the website. Acceptance rates are expected to be similar to last year, when 20 out of 59 total peer-reviewed papers were accepted. All these applications share a basic requirement, i.e. broadband services. Indeed, driven by the rapid growing demand of multimedia service, broadband Internet access is now a common setup for many Internet users in modern cities. In May 2008, US broadband penetration has reached 89.3% among active Internet users. Nevertheless, despite the high data rate, the broadband multimedia services are not satisfactory. For example, a computer may enjoy a 100Mbps of data rate connection to the Internet. However, even streaming 500kbps of a video clip may still suffer from occasion playback interruptions. This is mainly due to lack of QoS support in the Internet. Here is just one example to show the challenge of providing good-quality broadband multimedia services. The situation becomes even more challenging when we consider a variety of networks, diverse end users, notorious wireless channels, mobility, inter-networking, co-existence of different types of traffic, etc. The goal of this special issue is to solicit the state-of-the-art approaches and technical solutions in the area of network technologies for emerging broadband multimedia services. The issue will provide a convincing forum for researchers and practitioners to present their latest research results. Scope The scope of this special issue is to cover all aspects that relate to network technologies and media control technologies for emerging broadband multimedia services. CfP: ROADS'08 - Madrid, Spain, 9 December 2008 http://www.sigcomm.org/co-next2008/roads.html The 3rd International Workshop on Real Overlays And Distributed Systems (ROADS) seeks papers on the challenges in building large-scale distributed systems and networking overlays. ROADS is a place to share new experiences, and work in progress, with an emphasis on systems that actually run in the wide-area Internet. The Real in ROADS refers to systems that are deployed on a real platform for a period of time. They might be existing widely deployed systems, new research prototypes, or more permanent services, but submissions should address technical challenges they present for designers and researchers. We also welcome papers that explore the extent to which results retain their validity when moving from simulation (e.g., ModelNet) to emulation (e.g., Emulab), and/or to more realistic deployment settings (e.g., PlanetLab). The workshop program will include invited speakers and presentations of peer-reviewed papers. Papers will be selected based on originality, likelihood of stimulating a lively discussion, and technical merit. We encourage submissions of early work containing novel and interesting ideas. We envision ROADS as a forum where participants can receive early feedback on the design and implementation of systems that may later form the core of submissions to conferences such as CoNEXT, SIGCOMM, NSDI, SOSP, OSDI, MobiCom, or MobiSys. CfP: ROADS'08 - Madrid, Spain, 9 December 2008 http://www.sigcomm.org/co-next2008/roads.html The 3rd International Workshop on Real Overlays And Distributed Systems (ROADS) seeks papers on the challenges in building large-scale distributed systems and networking overlays. ROADS is a place to share new experiences, and work in progress, with an emphasis on systems that actually run in the wide-area Internet. The Real in ROADS refers to systems that are deployed on a real platform for a period of time. They might be existing widely deployed systems, new research prototypes, or more permanent services, but submissions should address technical challenges they present for designers and researchers. We also welcome papers that explore the extent to which results retain their validity when moving from simulation (e.g., ModelNet) to emulation (e.g., Emulab), and/or to more realistic deployment settings (e.g., PlanetLab). The workshop program will include invited speakers and presentations of peer-reviewed papers. Papers will be selected based on originality, likelihood of stimulating a lively discussion, and technical merit. We encourage submissions of early work containing novel and interesting ideas. We envision ROADS as a forum where participants can receive early feedback on the design and implementation of systems that may later form the core of submissions to conferences such as CoNEXT, SIGCOMM, NSDI, SOSP, OSDI, MobiCom, or MobiSys. Based on the success of the preceding WMAN workshops of 2007 back to 2002, the workshop will also be organised for 2009. For the upcoming workshop, we are very happy to introduce WMAN 2009 for the second time being hosted in the context of the bi-annual ITG/GI conference on communication in distributed systems (German: ITG/GI - Fachtagung "Kommunikation in Verteilten Systemen") - see http://www.kivs09.de/. Mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET) show a large interest in application and protocol research. While the basic organization of the routing tasks has been addressed for quite some time, the emerging areas include auto-configuration, security and data privacy, or an efficient use of various resources, such as bandwidth, energy, or memory. Especially driven by the hand-held or mobile devices restrictions, the lack of centralized managers, and a high dynamicity of users, devices, and applications, known solutions to wire-line protocols, mechanisms, and systems cannot be applied directly to MANETs. Therefore, this workshop WMAN’09 combines in a coherent manner questions from the lower radio transmission layer all the way up to the application layer relevant in MANETs. Furthermore, dedicated application scenarios, such as vehicle-to-vehicle communications or submarine communications are of high interest. While in the past entertainment technology traditionally offered predominantly passive experiences, continual advances in network and computer technologies are providing tools for implementing greater interactivity and for enabling consumers to enjoy more exciting experiences, such as, for example, interactive digital TV, interactive theatre and orchestrated music and sound design. This phenomenon is pulling together an extremely diverse group of experts specializing in different technical areas, such as networking, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, games, animation, multimedia design, human-computer interaction, educational media and software engineering. Even though high-tech entertainment promotes interdisciplinary fusion, yet only the ubiquity of wireless/wired communication is considered suitable for accepting the challenge of building a large interactive environment for the delivery of the maximum entertainment value to millions of consumers worldwide. In this respect, there is a great hope that the wired and wireless may take over this complex scenario for fulfilling the consumer expectations. For increasing scalability and decreasing the cost of management and deployment, more and more studies propose using peer-to-peer (P2P) architectures to construct large-scale NVEs for games, multimedia virtual worlds and other applications. The goal of such research may be to support an Earth-scale virtual environment or to make hosting virtual worlds more affordable than existing client-server approaches. However, existing solutions for consistency control, persistent data storage, multimedia data dissemination, and cheat-prevention may not be straightforwardly adapted to such new environments, novel ideas and designs thus are needed to realize the potential of P2P-based NVEs. The 1st International Workshop on Peer-to-Peer Networked Virtual Environments (P2P-NVE 2007) was held in Hsinchu, Taiwan, in 2007. The recent significant advances in almost all research areas related to these networks have enabled a wide spectrum of applications, including collaborative computing, disaster recovery, inter-vehicle communications, mobile access to Internet, surveillance and monitoring, intelligent agriculture, habitat monitoring, automation and control, intelligent home, etc. Service-oriented computing is gaining popularity in today's business environments by providing flexibility to seamlessly compose multiple distributed service components into different applications, processes, and more complex services. Though service-oriented computing has been well studied in wired networks, it remains a nascent area of research in wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. The frequent mobility, the limited computation/storage capability, and battery power in wireless ad hoc and sensor networks require more innovative service composition, advertisement, discovery, and invocation mechanisms to migrate service-oriented computing to wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. The aim of this special session is to foster interactions among researchers from industry and academia on all aspects of service-oriented wireless ad hoc and sensor networks. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: Service-oriented advertisement model Service-oriented query model Service-oriented data processing, storage, and management schemes Service-driven routing protocols Service composition mechanisms Service discovery protocols Service-oriented mobility and data management Service-oriented cross layer approaches Detection, classification, estimation, and tracking schemes Efficient deployment and localization schemes Energy-efficient network architectures Energy and time efficient data delivery and data fusion schemes Fault-tolerance and security issues Modeling and simulation Software platforms and middleware design Tools and techniques for design, deployment, evaluation, and testing Multimedia and novel applications and services Data mining and warehousing Submission Instructions Authors are invited to submit regular technical papers or position papers. International Workshop on Collaboration and Cognition in Next Generation Networks (CoNGN 2008) www.criticalnet.org/CoNGN In conjunction with CollaborateCom 2008 Orlando, Florida, November 2008 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The rapid developments in the Internet and emerging alternative network protocol stacks promise unprecedented levels of sharing of information, computing and communication resources through distributed collaborations of diverse network elements. Collaborative networking comprises complex systems with many tunable interdependent components, parameters and network performance objectives. To realize their potential, collaborative networks need to provide effective and efficient support for ubiquitous integration of heterogeneous technologies such as mobile devices and infrastructures, web services, grid computing systems, various operating environments, and diverse COTS products. In addition, research is needed to provide network cognition, which entails learning and reasoning by the diverse network elements to dynamically select the ideal network operating state and adapt to varying network and group contexts in order to optimize end-to-end performance of the network as a whole. Moreover, networking aspects such as autonomicity, security, trust, management, quality-of-service support and localization need to be cognizant of group dynamics. Aparently, numerous challenges face the realization of collaborative networking. These challenges include balancing the competing goals of collaboration, autonomy and security; allowing mobile users and groups to seamlessly communicate throughout multiple heterogeneous networks and enjoy multiparty multimedia applications while on the move between different administrative domains; developing new APIs to enable applications to detect available access networks and learn their characteristics, thus becoming aware of location, context, and quality-of-service; and carefully optimizing network parameters across the entire protocol stack. The key goal of this workshop is to foster active interactions among diverse researchers and practitioners, and generate added momentum towards research addressing collaborative and cognitive networking aspects. 11th IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management 1 - 5 June, 2009, New York, New York, USA "Making Management Scalable, Robust, Cost-Effective and Revenue-Generating" http://www.ieee-im.org/ The Eleventh IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management (IM 2009) will be held on 1 - 5 June 2009 at Columbia University in New York, New York, USA. The IM series of conferences has been held in odd-numbered years since 1989 (taking turns with its sibling conference NOMS), and has established itself as the main venue for original research in the area of management, operations and control of networks, networking services, networked applications, and distributed systems. IM 2009 will build on the successes of its predecessors and serve as the primary forum for technical exchange among the research, standards, vendor and user communities in the network management field. The symposium is sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Working Group 6.6 on Management of Networks and Distributed Systems, and by the IEEE Communications Society Technical Committee on Network Operations and Management (CNOM). Despite the ongoing research in the last two decades, and the great improvements in management tools and systems, integrated management of networked systems is still facing many challenges. With a continued increase in connectivity and the deployment of wireless technologies, there has been a dramatic growth in the size and complexity of networked systems at the same time that reliance upon them has increased. This dependence has highlighted the need for these systems to be reliable, secure and have predictable performance characteristics. Management mechanisms are keys to achieving these goals, but they must not add significantly to complexity and cost or the problems will be compounded. In short we need to Make Management Scalable, Robust, and Cost-effective, and to make sure it helps generate the revenue to support it. IM 2009 will be organized into technical and application sessions, panels, and tutorials. In addition, it will feature an industrial experience track to share Practical lessons learned by the user and vendor communities, posters, and birds-of-a-feather sessions. Paper submissions will undergo a stringent review process implemented by the Technical Program Committee, which includes the most respected experts in the field. We encourage papers that break new ground or present insightful results based on experience with integrated management of networks, systems, applications and services. Authors are invited to submit original contributions in PDF format through the IM 2009 web site. Papers must be written in English. Only original papers that have not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere can be submitted. Self-plagiarized papers and multiple submissions will be rejected without further review. Advances in networking infrastructure as well as middleware are vital to delivering telemedicine services regardless of a patient's physical location. In-home care for elderly persons is costly and can require sensors, wireless monitoring devices, and networking infrastructure and middleware to automatically contact emergency services. Healthcare is motivating unique basic research challenges in wireless and pervasive communications due to requirements for safe signal propagation characteristics, low network latency, low packet loss, high quality image and video transmission, and the need for safe, secure, and dependable operation. The goal of this issue is to report on cutting-edge research in communications for healthcare. This special issue aims at bringing together state-of-the-art contributions of wireless monitoring, control, actuator coordination as well as their co-designs. In recent years, the demand for wireless communications in many monitoring and control applications has grown tremendously, such as military, aerospace, industrial, commercial, environmental, and health monitoring, etc. Some new technologies like Zigbee, Wi-Fi, Mobile Robots, and Bluetooth have already made significant contribution to data acquisition. As the same time, they arise some new challenges to guarantee a highly reliable, accurate, and fault-tolerant process. It is a critical issue to develop innovative approaches to deal with multi-variable, multi-space problem domains (detection, identification, tracking, data fusion, energy-efficiency, and fault-tolerant framework) as well as practical implementation in wireless monitoring and control application. The purpose of the special issue is to focus on the novel ways by which monitoring, detection, identification, coordination and control schemes are applied in wireless monitoring and control applications. ************************************************************************** CALL FOR PAPERS 1st Workshop on Wireless Broadband Access for Communities and Rural Developing Regions Co-located at 1st International Conference on "M4D" - Mobile Communication Technology for Development", http://m4d.humanit.org/ December 11-12, 2008, Karlstad University, Sweden Sponsored by E-CLIC (EU-regional funds) ************************************************************************** Broadband internet access is at present available only to a small portion of the world's population, and there is a significant penetration discrepancy not only between different countries but also between different regions and areas within a given country. In addition, there is a growing interest on the local community and municipal levels to get broadband wireless access, but the number of options regarding network and service providers, as well as price and usage plans, is severely limited. However, affordable broadband for all is a key requirement to bridge the digital divide and to bring sustainable development to rural and developing regions as well as to support communities and municipalities. Today, existing technologies and plans for broadband access fail to address key challenges in terms of cost, deployment, or power consumption in order to bring broadband internet access to sparsely populated rural areas or to the masses of developing countries. While the focus of the general M4D conference is on multi-disciplinary research addressing the social, political, cultural and educational barriers to bringing ICT into developing regions, this workshop focuses on the technical and economical aspects of enabling (broadband) wireless internet access for rural and developing areas, as well as supporting communities and municipalities. The goal is to bring together researchers and practitioners and to serve as a forum for presenting and discussing state of the art research, exchanging ideas and experiences, and facilitating interaction and collaboration. Journal of Telecommunication Systems (http://www.springer.com/business/business+information+systems/journal/11235 ) Special Issue on Secure Multimedia Services Introduction During the last decade, various techniques have been proposed to improve multimedia service systems' security. For example, multimedia encryption is used for confidentiality protection of multimedia content, multimedia authentication for integrity detection, digital watermarking for ownership authentication or copy tracing, Conditional Access (CA) for access control, and Digital Rights Management (DRM) for copyright management, etc. In addition, in different networks, such as the Internet, 3G wireless, DVB-H and sensor network, different secure protocols and algorithms are required to provide system security. All these topics are in active development. This special issue aims to expose the readership to the latest research results on secure multimedia services in telecommunication systems. It will include a number of related topics, demonstrate pioneer work in this field, investigate the novel solutions and discuss the future trends in this field. Topics Submitted papers may focus on architecture construction, algorithm design or hardware implementation. Both review papers and technical papers are expected. Many novel and attractive applications are made possible, such as advanced automotive systems, environmental control, critical infrastructure control, high confidence medical devices and systems, etc. In these applications, a large scale wireless networking system that consists of massive numbers of connected processing elements, sensors, and actuators often plays a key role. The high complexity of such large scale heterogeneous systems raises new challenges to the system design: we expect the system to be context-aware and self-adaptive to internal and external environments to achieve reliable and robust performance; to be self-organizing and scalable so that managing and maintaining costs could be minimized; to have programmable architecture and protocols for achieving optimal performance in different situations/scenarios, etc. These challenges need to be addressed under joint efforts from different areas, such as networking, system, control, AI, biology, and others. The special issue seeks original and unpublished papers that address theoretical and experimental work related to self-adaptive and self-organizing wireless networking systems (SASOWNS).
