In this scenario, mobile multimedia is expected to be one of the key services of future wireless mobile networks. Meanwhile, recent advances in digital communications have paved the way to a variety of standards aimed at providing multimedia services over terrestrial broadband networks. To cite but a few, DVB-H, T-DVB, T-DMB, wireless LANs, and wireless MANs are some of the most recent standards enabling such technology. Iterative decoding techniques for both source, channel, and joint source-channel coding and decoding and cross-layering techniques have proven to be very effective for providing a viable means of achieving capacity-approaching performance at very reduced computational burden. The main aim of this special issue is to highlight state-of-the-art techniques on the most recent research advances enabling digital multimedia services over broadband wireless networks, focused on physical and cross-layering solutions. Novel contributions, previously unpublished, that are not being submitted to any other journal, are sought. Ad hoc wireless networks allow anywhere, anytime network connectivity with complete lack of control, ownership, and regulatory influence. The last few years have witnessed a wealth of research ideas on ad hoc and sensor networks that are moving rapidly into commercialization and standardization. Such networks can be randomly and rapidly deployed and reconfigured and easily tailored to specific applications including entertainment, civilian, military, etc. Moreover, an ad hoc architecture is highly robust to node failure and can provide a high-level of fault tolerance due to nodal redundancy and its distributed nature. Furthermore, energy efficiency can be achieved through multi-hop routing communication. Bandwidth reuse can also benefit from dividing the single long range hop to multiple short hops with each hop having a shorter range. Several challenges face are standing in the way to achieving ubiquitous deployment of ad hoc and sensor networks. These include variable topology, device heterogeneity, limited power supply and the lack of effective energy-efficient design, lack of QoS and application support, etc. This symposium aims at providing a forum for sharing ideas among researchers and practitioners working on state-of-the-art solutions to the challenges above. We are seeking papers that describe original and unpublished contributions addressing various aspects of ad hoc and sensor networks. The necessity for and expected benefit of self-organization is caused by the growing scale, complexity, and heterogeneity of future networked systems, like the future Internet. For example, these networks will consist of interconnected infrastructure-based, mobile ad-hoc, and sensor networks that could be spontaneously deployed in hostile environments, have a dynamic population and a potentially short life time. In spite of this, there will be stringent user requirements, such as resilience and real-time guarantees. Although self-organization is desirable for these kinds of networks, it is not yet clear to what extent self-organization can be exploited. Research into networked systems has recently started to systematically investigate self-organization, which has lead to a multitude of open research issues. The applicability of well-known self-organizing techniques to specific networks and networked systems has to be investigated, as well as adaptations and novel approaches inspired by, e.g., cooperation in nature and evolutionary dynamics, sociology, and game theory. Additionally, models originating from areas like feedback control and complex system's research, are required for these networked systems in order to analyze their controllability and emergent behavior. Aspects of engineering self-organizing networked systems should be studied that discuss paradigms like programmable networks, and tools and frameworks for deploying, testing, and monitoring self-organizing networks. The role of self-organization in the future Internet and the impact on its architecture is an important topic, as well as the application of self-organization in future intelligent transportation systems and vehicular ad-hoc networks. Mathematical analysis, modeling and optimization are playing an important role in research studies to investigate fundamental issues and tradeoffs at the core of performance problems in the design and implementation of complex computer systems, networks and applications. The Tenth Workshop on MAthematical performance Modeling and Analysis (MAMA 2008) seeks to bring together researchers working on the mathematical, methodological and theoretical aspects of performance analysis, modeling and optimization. It is intended to provide a forum at SIGMETRICS conferences for talks on early research in the more mathematical areas of computer performance analysis. These talks tend to be based on very recent research results (including work in progress) or on new research results that will be otherwise submitted only to a journal (or recently have been submitted to a journal). Thus, part of the goal is to complement and supplement the SIGMETRICS Conference program with such talks without removing any theoretical contributions from the main technical program. This year's workshop will be held on June 2 (before the main SIGMETRICS technical program). In addition to the presentation of extended abstracts, the workshop will include time for informal technical discussions among the speakers and attendees. SUBMISSION INFORMATION April 18, 2008: Abstract Submission Deadline May 2, 2008: Acceptance Notification May 9, 2008: Final Abstracts for Workshop Aug 1, 2008: Final Extended Abstracts for PER MAMA 2008 encourages the submission of abstracts describing early research on the general mathematical, methodological and theoretical aspects of performance analysis, modeling and optimization. Authors are asked to submit 2-3 page abstracts, following the same formatting instructions as the main SIGMETRICS conference (refer to http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~sigmet08/cfp.html), before the above deadline. (NOTE that this is different from the submission guidelines in previous years.) Submissions violating these formatting guidelines will be returned without review. Abstracts should be submitted electronically, as an e-mail attachment, to mss(a)watson.ibm.com. The research efforts e.g. for the 3G/4G and 3G LTE visions of interworking among heterogeneous technologies to achieve multimedia session continuity, retain multimedia QoS characteristics etc., amplifies the need to evaluate the conditions and restrictions under which delivery of such services can be accomplished. The demand for efficient multimedia communications can be also seen as one of main driving forces towards the Future Internet and Post-IP solutions. The interoperability of applications, transport and network protocols and radio access, as well as the demand for improved quality of service and user experience, security and mobility support creates a challenging study field and also possibilities for research of novel communication protocols and methods towards the Future Internet. In addition for the technical challenges caused by the increased amount of multimedia usage and delivery through different community services, peer-to-peer networks, Web, Internet IPTV etc. the multimedia delivery is also affecting to industry value chains, commerce transactions between businesses (B2B), and business and customers (B2C). Within this scope, MobiMedia is intended to provide a unique international forum for researchers from industry and academia, working in multimedia coding and mobile networking fields to study new applications, solutions, and standards. Original unpublished contributions are solicited that can improve the knowledge and practice in the integrated design of efficient technologies and the relevant provision of advanced mobile multimedia applications. Paper submission and publication -------------------------------- MobiMedia 2008 invites manuscripts that present original materials not previously published in, or currently under review by, another conference or journal. Full-length papers should report on completed work and will be considered for oral presentations. A separate abstract of no longer than 200 words should be submitted as well. However, in recent years, other applications of relay communications have emerged. One such emerging application is to assist in the communication between the source and destination via some cooperation protocol. By controlling medium access between source and relays coupled with the appropriate modulation or coding in such cooperative schemes, it has been found that the diversity of the system can be improved. In multi-user systems, different users can also act as cooperative partners or relays to share resources and assist each other in information transmission, thereby creating a cooperative network. One other emerging application is the exchange of information between multiple users through relay(s). In such cases, by exploiting the knowledge of one's own transmitted signal, the throughput of these systems can be drastically increased. For cooperative and relay communications, the MAC layer also has many unique features. The MAC in this case, is concerned with more than one hop communication, is distributed and cooperative and works for multipoint-to-multipoint communication. The MAC also needs to have knowledge about network topology and account for node mobility. Accordingly, a new design of the MAC layer has to be devised to include new functionalities as well as MAC layer routing. With the large benefits to be reaped from employing cooperative and relay techniques, several standardization groups, such as IEEE 802.16 and IEEE 802.11, have started standardization processes to include such technologies into their prevailing standards. These efforts will no doubt attract even more interests from the academia and industry, advancing cooperative and relay technologies even further in the coming years. With interests from both the research and industrial communities gaining momentum, there is an urgent need to better understand as well as to keep track of cutting edge research in cooperative and relay communications. We plan this special issue to help address that need, as well as to help researchers looking to jump on the bandwagon. Therefore, the special issue will focus on recent advances as well as survey papers in cooperative and relay communications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following topics: . Cooperative algorithms and protocols . Partner(s) selection in cooperative relay and routing . Cooperative resource allocation and management . Relay strategies for cooperative communications . WAVE systems will fundamentally smooth the progress of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) by providing it with high performance physical platforms. WAVE systems will build upon the IEEE 802.11p standard, which is still active and expected to be ratified in April, 2009. Meanwhile, the VHF/UHF (700MHz) band vehicular communications systems are attracting increasingly attention recently. The fast varying and harsh vehicular environment bring about several fresh research topics on the study of WAVE systems and future vehicular communications systems, which include physical layer challenges associated with mobile channels, capacity evaluation, novel network configuration, effective media access control (MAC) protocols, and robust routing and congestion control schemes. The objective of this special section is to gather and circulate recent progresses in this fast developing area of WAVE and future vehicular communications systems spanning from theoretical analysis to testbed setup, and from physical/MAC layers’ enabling technology to network protocol. These research and implementation activities will be considerably helpful to the design of WAVE and future vehicular communications systems by removing major technical barriers and presenting theoretical guidance. The aim of this workshop is to bring together scientists, engineers, and practitioners in order to share and exchange their experiences, discuss challenges, and report state-of-the-art and in-progress research on all aspects of performance measurements, monitoring, and evaluation of heterogeneous wired and wireless mobile networks, including, wireless ad hoc, sensor, and ubiquitous networks. June 17th 2008 ========================================================================= CALL FOR PAPERS WORKSHOP SCOPE: ================ As the world's population grows older, healthcare and high-tech companies are joining forces. New technologies are being used to provide improved support for elderly and home bound people in their homes and in assisted living environments. The overall goal of these initiatives is to improve the quality of life by providing customized support to people in need of assistance. The main challenge is to provide this support according to the user's own specific situation in a non-intrusive and respectful way. These new technologies enable the automation of the observation and support for elderly and home bound people through the use of sensors, actuators, distributed intelligence, databases, ubiquitous connectivity and friendly adaptive interfaces, all connected mainly via a variety of wireless networking technologies. The ultimate goal is a system that can adapt to the user's needs, helping them get through their daily routine in a way that is effective in providing support where needed without making them feel humiliated by excessive attention. To provide such support, it will be necessary to combine efforts from many areas of computer science, including networking, distributed systems, security, data management, HCI, AI and middleware. Given the inherent use of mobile and wireless communication and the need for comprehensive distributed systems as well as the multi-disciplinary nature of solutions for healthcare and assisted living environments, the goal of HealthNet is to provide a forum for the cross-area interactions that will be necessary for successful systems and applications. The specific focus of HealthNet will be on understanding what it takes to provide effective systems and communication support for healthcare and assisted living environments. Although the systems and networking community is very good at providing effective solutions to satisfying application requirements, they require input from experts in other disciples, including HCI, middleware, security, privacy and social networking, to provide a more accurate understanding of the specific requirements for these environments. THE GOAL of HealthNet is to provide a forum for the cross-area interactions that will be necessary for successful systems and applications. The focus of this workshop will be understanding and discussing what it takes to provide effective systems and communication support for healthcare and assisted living environments. The proliferation of pervasive devices and the increase in their processing capabilities, client-side speech processing has been emerging as a viable alternative. In SiMPE 2008, the third in the series, we will continue to explore the various possibilities and issues that arise while enabling speech processing on resource-constrained, possibly mobile devices. Topics of Interest: All areas that enable, optimise or enhance Speech in mobile and pervasive environments and devices. Over the last number of years significant energies have been focused on specific areas, notably ad hoc networking and sensor networking. More recently, multi-hop techniques are being viewed as an important component of next generation radio access networks, in which end user terminals may be multiple wireless hops from the wired infrastructure. Most of these multi-hop radio access deployments are characterized by intermediate nodes with limited mobility which differentiates these problems from those arising in an ad hoc domain. This approach provides a number of advantages over more typical single-hop wireless access solutions: firstly, it can provide increased coverage at low cost, which is very important in initial network rollout; secondly, it can support increased network capacity as the network matures; thirdly, such systems are typically much more flexible than previous variants with greater support for self-configuration and system adaptation, which leads to management and maintenance cost savings. However, realizing these benefits is highly non-trivial, requiring an excellent understanding of all aspects of a radio system. There are a number of interesting initiatives in this space. A number of standards are currently being defined – 802.11s, 802.16j to mention two. The new radio systems which will be developed under the ITU’s IMT-advanced initiative will have some multihop capabilities and there is also interest within the more traditional cellular community in relay architectures. Hence, work in this area can have a significant impact in a standardization context and it is well positioned to ultimately be adopted by the market. While considerable energy has been expended on some of these problems, many challenges remain. Contributions for this special issue are sought which focus on recent research results describing innovative solutions to problems in this domain. Topics of interest include – although are not limited to – the following: • Distributed channel management techniques • Novel MAC mechanisms for multihop contexts • Routing in 802.11 mesh networks • Use of multi-hop architectures in cellular systems (W-CDMA, CDMA2000) • Mesh and relay systems based on 802.11s and 802.16j • Mobility support in mesh and relay systems • Power control considerations for mesh and relay architectures • Network planning for relay based systems • Performance analysis of multi-hop networks • Self-configuration and management techniques • Results from trials, testbeds and real-world scenarios Submission Prospective authors are invited to prepare their papers according to the instructions laid out in the Instructions to Authors at http://www.elsevier.com/locate/comnet. A lot of real-world applications have been already deployed and many of them will be based on wireless sensor networks. These applications include geographical monitoring, medical care, manufacturing, transportation, military, and surveillance systems. Due to the nature of wireless communication networks, many security challenges are faced when dealing and working with such technologies including eavesdropping, man-in-the-middle, spoofing and DDoS. Security is the key issue for reliable critical applications in wireless sensor networks. Advances in design and prototype of security mechanisms in wireless sensor network systems for protecting the confidentiality, availability, and integrity are crucial for the success of sensor applications. Original contributions are solicited in all the relevant security issues in wireless sensor networks, including but not limited to: Protocols and architectures for wireless sensor networks Key distribution and key management Provably-secure cryptographic protocols Public-key and symmetric-key cryptosystems, block ciphers, and hash functions Network security protocols: DNS security, routing, naming, denial-of-service attacks, TCP/IP, secure multicast Anonymity techniques Trust mechanisms Privacy Security and usability Automated analysis of protocols Authentication mechanisms Biometric-based security schemes RFID Submitted paper should not be considered elsewhere for publication and the authors must follow the guidelines for preparation of the manuscripts. By sharing antennas in a multi-user environment, single-antenna wireless devices enable a virtual multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system that allows them to achieve transmit diversity, and hence obtain advantages of MIMO with reduced size, cost, and complexity of the hardware/software. Upon cooperation at physical, MAC, network, and application layer, various cooperative signaling methods are widely explored and many new mechanisms are under development with respects to routing, medium access, location management, scheduling, energy management, and so on. A wireless mesh network is characterized by dynamic self - organization, self-configuration and self-healing, which allow it for easy and fast, highly scalable, reliable and cost- effective network deployment under very diverse environments, and provision of better coverage and capacity to stationary and mobile users. Because of this, wireless mesh networks have not only become a hot topic in the research community, but are also experiencing a very fast deployment in many today's environments, such as public city-wide broadband WiFi networks, rural networks, private neighbourhood communities, or private business networks that are characterized by frequent topology changes, cabling troubles, or hard environmental conditions. Triggered by these fast advances in both research and industry communities, several standardization bodies have started working on specifying recognized protocols and architectures for interoperable WMNs, including both the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN standards committee (inside the IEEE 802.16/WiMAX, the IEEE 802.11s, the IEEE 802. and the IEEE 802.15.5 Working Groups) and the IETF in the context of wireless access and mobility support in Next Generation Internet (inside, e.g., the MIPSHOP, NETLMM and MANET Working Groups). However, it is still to be fully understood what technological challenges these standardization efforts have to face, how they will evolve, and what application scenarios will be able to drive their possible success. Building on the success of the last year event, MeshTech 2008 aims at bringing together again practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry in order to discuss the recent advances and future evolution of next generation mobile mesh/multi-hop relay networking technologies and standards. Many novel and attractive applications are made possible, such as advanced automotive systems, environmental control, critical infrastructure control, high confidence medical devices and systems, etc. In these applications, a large scale wireless networking system that consists of massive numbers of connected processing elements, sensors, and actuators often plays a key role. The high complexity of such large scale heterogeneous systems raises new challenges to the system design: we expect the system to be context-aware and self-adaptive to internal and external environments to achieve reliable and robust performance; to be self-organizing and scalable so that managing and maintaining costs could be minimized; to have programmable architecture and protocols for achieving optimal performance in different situations/scenarios, etc. These challenges need to be addressed under joint efforts from different areas, such as networking, system, control, AI, biology, and others. The special issue seeks original and unpublished papers that address theoretical and experimental work related to self-adaptive and self-organizing wireless networking systems (SASOWNS). They combine two gaming traditions in a novel way, which have been mutual exclusive till now: outdoor games and computer games. Game design is facing new challenges. Currently only few games exploit the potential, which is offered by augmented and mixed reality, global networking, location-awareness and sensors. Theory and methodology to survey mobile gaming experiences are far from maturity. The question is, how to understand mobility and physical movement within mixed game worlds? How to study gaming experiences of mobile players, who are moving independently through urban space? What are the roles of the player's community and its culture for playing games? Development and design of mobile games are challenging us with core issues of ubiquitous computing, the complexity of mobile, distributed systems, the particular dynamics of game situations and the changing contexts, the diversity of actors, using the technology, and the issues of interaction beyond the desk, encompassing the players body, multiple human senses and diverse usage modes. The diversification of hard- and software leads to additional challenges regarding interoperability and calls for flexible frameworks supporting the integration. This workshop aims to increase the perception of mobile gaming as a rich domain for research in many directions in the German-speaking science and market area. We invite researchers and developers to exchange their experiences, identify urging research issues and to look for ways how to exploit and enhance the basic conditions for research in this domain. Call for Papers (http://www.hindawi.com/journals/wcn/si/fair-rrm.html) Radio resource management (RRM) techniques (such as admission control, scheduling, sub-carrier allocation, channel assignment, power allocation, and rate control) are essential for maximizing the resource utilization and providing quality of service (QoS) in wireless networks. In many cases, the performance metrics (e.g., overall throughput) can be optimized if opportunistic algorithms are employed. However, opportunistic RRM techniques always favor advantaged users who have good channel conditions and/or low interference levels. The problem becomes even worse when the wireless terminals have low mobility since the channel conditions become slowly varying (or even static), which might lead to long-term unfairness. The problem of fair resource allocation is more challenging in multihop wireless networks (e.g., mesh and multihop cellular networks). The performance fairness can be introduced as one of the QoS requirements (e.g., as a condition on the minimum throughput per user). Fair RRM schemes might penalize advantaged users; hence, there should be a tradeoﬀ between the overall system performance and the fairness requirements. We are soliciting high-quality unpublished research papers addressing the problem of fairness of RRM techniques in wireless communication systems. ICNP 2008 will be held in Orlando, Florida, on October 19-22, 2008. Papers with significant research contributions to the field of network protocols are solicited for submission. Papers cannot be previously published nor under review by another conference or journal. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: 1. Protocol testing, analysis, design and implementation 2. Measurement and monitoring of protocols 3. Protocols designed for specific functions, such as: routing, flow and congestion control, QoS, signaling, security, network management, or resilience 4. Protocols designed for specific networks, such as: wireless and mobile networks, Ad hoc and sensor networks, virtual networks, and ubiquitous networks Papers must deal specifically with protocols. Papers of general networking nature where protocols are only a secondary focus will be considered only if they are of exceptional high quality and only a very limited number of such papers will be included in the technical program. ICNP will select an accepted full paper for the best paper award. For the first time, ICNP is using a double-blind review process. The identity of authors and referees will not be revealed to each other. To ensure blind reviewing, authors names and affiliations should not appear in the paper; bibliographic references should be made in such a way as to preserve author anonymity.
