In this scenario, mobile multimedia is expected to be one of the key services of future wireless mobile networks. Meanwhile, recent advances in digital communications have paved the way to a variety of standards aimed at providing multimedia services over terrestrial broadband networks. To cite but a few, DVB-H, T-DVB, T-DMB, wireless LANs, and wireless MANs are some of the most recent standards enabling such technology. Iterative decoding techniques for both source, channel, and joint source-channel coding and decoding and cross-layering techniques have proven to be very effective for providing a viable means of achieving capacity-approaching performance at very reduced computational burden. The main aim of this special issue is to highlight state-of-the-art techniques on the most recent research advances enabling digital multimedia services over broadband wireless networks, focused on physical and cross-layering solutions. Novel contributions, previously unpublished, that are not being submitted to any other journal, are sought. Ad hoc wireless networks allow anywhere, anytime network connectivity with complete lack of control, ownership, and regulatory influence. The last few years have witnessed a wealth of research ideas on ad hoc and sensor networks that are moving rapidly into commercialization and standardization. Such networks can be randomly and rapidly deployed and reconfigured and easily tailored to specific applications including entertainment, civilian, military, etc. Moreover, an ad hoc architecture is highly robust to node failure and can provide a high-level of fault tolerance due to nodal redundancy and its distributed nature. Furthermore, energy efficiency can be achieved through multi-hop routing communication. Bandwidth reuse can also benefit from dividing the single long range hop to multiple short hops with each hop having a shorter range. Several challenges face are standing in the way to achieving ubiquitous deployment of ad hoc and sensor networks. These include variable topology, device heterogeneity, limited power supply and the lack of effective energy-efficient design, lack of QoS and application support, etc. This symposium aims at providing a forum for sharing ideas among researchers and practitioners working on state-of-the-art solutions to the challenges above. We are seeking papers that describe original and unpublished contributions addressing various aspects of ad hoc and sensor networks. Through the use of mobile devices embedded in the surrounding physical environment, users can be provided with transparent computing and communication services at all times and in all places. The complexity of providing such services stems from the fact that the communication devices and the objects with which they interact may both be mobile. Their implementation requires advances in wireless network technologies and devices, development of infrastructures supporting cognitive environments, discovery and identification of ubiquitous computing applications and services, and an understanding of the cross-layer interactions between all of these components. The Fifth Annual International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Computing, Networking and Services (MobiQuitous 2008) will provide a forum where practitioners and researchers coming from many areas involved in ubiquitous solutions design and deployment will be able to interact and exchange experiences needed to build successful ubiquitous systems. Areas addressed by the conference include systems, applications, service-oriented computing, middleware, networking, agents, data management and services, all with special focus on mobility and ubiquitous computing. TOPICS OF INTEREST Technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research, not currently under review by another conference or journal, are solicited. Technical papers clearly identifying how the specific contributions fit to an overall working system are particularly of interest. Authors should prepare an Adobe Acrobat PDF version of their full paper. Papers must not exceed 10 pages double column (US Letter size, 8.5 x 11 inches) including text, figures and references. The font size must be at least 10 points. PUBLICATION All submitted papers will be rigorously reviewed by the international technical program committee. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. Papers of particular merit will be proposed for publication in the ACM/Kluwer Mobile Networks and Applications (MONET) journal. WORKSHOPS Several workshops will be run in conjunction with the conference. CALL FOR PAPERS 1st International DisCoTec Workshop on Context-aware Adaptation Mechanisms for Pervasive and Ubiquitous Services Tuesday 3rd June 2008 Oslo, Norway http://discotec08.ifi.uio.no/Campus08 Overview. There is a huge market potential for mobile applications in Europe today. Most people already carry a mobile device of some sort wherever they go, and an increasingly diverse set of devices (PDAs, smart phones, GPS, etc.) are becoming widely available. Recently, service- orientations (e.g., OSGi) have evolved to address these highly dynamic environments. However, it is still technically difficult, using existing method and tool supports, to create such services-oriented applications. For example, the very large range of devices, types of infrastructure, ways in which it can change, situations in which users can find themselves, and the functions they want, introduce great complexity and pose considerable technical challenges. To overcome these difficulties, and promote the development and widespread deployment of innovative mobile applications, more and more projects are addressing the development of context-aware adaptation mechanisms for leveraging the development of mobile applications. These projects aims at providing simple but powerful integrated approaches to support the development of applications interacting in pervasive and ubiquitous environments. Thus, the CAMPUS workshop will focus on the promising approaches in the domain of context-aware adaptation mechanisms supporting the dynamic evolution of the execution context (e.g., network/device/service failures). Research Topics The workshop will address an extensive set of topics related to adaptation mechanisms for context-aware services. 1st Workshop on Urban Networks and Applications (UNA 08) Lakeshore Hotel, Hsinchu, Taiwan, August 4-6, 2008 http://una.cs.ucc.ie held in conjunction with the 13th IEEE Asia-Pacific Computer Systems Architecture Conference http://www.ccrc.nthu.edu.tw/acsac2008 Urban settings are host of diverse networking technologies, from cellular and wired broadband to WiMAX, WiFi, Bluetooth and, more recently, mesh and sensor networks. While this rich environment offers opportunities for connectivity, inter-operability and sharing of services and resources, the co-existence of these heterogeneous technologies, competing for the same resources and offering similar services, poses difficult engineering and legal problems. For example, network planning is a major issue that can determine the effective use of each network and, when possible, inter-operability of the networks. Cities administrations are keen to deploy and take advantage of public service networks, whereas citizens are interested to use public or private services at home, at work or while driving or walking. Private initiatives may selectively focus on certain niche services. Overall, urban networks can increase the quality of life in cities and can make the distinction among cities. In achieving this goal, many technical challenges have to be tackled. This workshop will be a forum for discussion of new and interdisciplinary ideas on new architectures, paradigms, concepts, service models and novel applications for urban networks. The topics for submission include but are not limited to: cognitive radio technologies congestion control micro- and pico-cell control architecture hybrid cell configuration sensor networks in urban settings personal area networks vehicular networks mesh networks mobile ad hoc networks networks planning networks inter-operability data mining of a large volume of data in urban networks database support for urban networks network and service discovery mobility supporting services context awareness mobile middleware ubiquitous and urban computing urban network systems and applications locative media and applications access, security and privacy in urban networks Submissions Both research and industry papers are solicited. Call for Papers Special issue on: Emerging Wireless Networks, Computers and Electrical Engineering Journal, Elsevier http://www.elsevier.com/framework_products/promis_misc/cfp367special.pdf Wireless communication technologies are undergoing rapid advancements. The last few years have experienced a steep growth in research on wireless networks having attractive claims. Researchers are currently envisioning different attractive properties of wireless systems such as the ability to self- organize, self-configure, self-heal, self-manage and self-maintain. Different wireless networks having the potential to offer cost-effective home and enterprise access networking solutions are being researched. Technologies such as Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs), WiFi, WiMax, Bluetooth, 802.20, 802.22 and software defined radio are gaining popularity. Even though these technologies hold great promises for our future, there are several challenges that need to be addressed. This Special Issue aims to publish high quality research papers relating to different emerging wireless network technologies. [Apologies for multiple postings] 1st CALL FOR PAPERS IEEE PIMRC 2008 - VoIP Technologies Workshop VoIP Technology: Research and Standards for reliable applications http://www.cs.uoi.gr/~voippimrc08/ Aim of the workshop ------------------------ The trend to all IP-based networks has been fuelled by the Internet’s flexibility that allows the development of innovative services. In this context, the integration of heterogeneous infrastructures as well as applications is of paramount importance. Voice over IP (VoIP), also referred to as Internet or IP telephony, is an example of application that brings the well-known circuit-switched service to the context of IP-based networks. Over the last years, VoIP has received the wide acceptance of users and network operators due to its countless benefits. While users enjoy the flexibility and the monetary savings that VoIP provides, service providers take advantage of its cost-effectiveness. Although VoIP has evolved rapidly, recent advances provide new opportunities for meeting numerous daunting challenges for reaching the quality of traditional telephony service. To this end, he VoIP community is taking advantage of new networking technologies (i.e., WiMAX, Wireless Mesh networks, overlay networks, etc) and innovative design trends and technologies (i.e., cross-layer architectures, QoS advances, network coding, etc). The aim of this workshop is to serve as a forum for scientists and engineers from academia, industry as well as from regulatory and standardization authorities, where they could share recent advances and design trends in VoIP technology. Topics of Interest ------------------------ The aim of this Workshop is to cover a wide spectrum of topics related to VoIP communications, ranging from QoS mechanisms to the design and performance evaluation of different VoIP components. Original papers are solicited that present research, development and deployment issues and challenges, as well as experimental results and applications in the area of Internet Telephony. The topics of interest include but are not limited to: * Emerging VoIP services in all-IP mobile networks * Cross-layer design of VoIP services * Call continuity between VoIP and traditional circuit-switched networks * VoIP over Heterogeneous Networks * Test methods and measurments * Design, implementation and VoIP testbed results * QoS mechanisms tailored to VoIP transmission * Header Compression schemes * Voice codecs and silence suppression * VoIP over WLAN, WiMAX and Wireless Mesh Networks * Call admission control and QoS support for VoIP * Security in VoIP communications Submission of Papers ------------------------ Submitted papers should be 5 double-column pages (over-length pages will be charged according to PIMRC policy). Both submissions and full papers should be uploaded to the VoIP Technologies Workshop submission track (http://edas.info/newPaper.php?c=6355&track=4147&) in the EDAS system. Papers should be in English and formatted according to IEEE paper templates available on the PIMRC’08 website. The interoperability of applications, transport and network protocols and radio access, as well as the demand for improved quality of service and user experience, security and mobility support creates a challenging study field and also possibilities for research of novel communication protocols and methods towards the Future Internet. In addition for the technical challenges caused by the increased amount of multimedia usage and delivery through different community services, peer-to-peer networks, Web, Internet IPTV etc. the multimedia delivery is also affecting to industry value chains, commerce transactions between businesses (B2B), and business and customers (B2C). Within this scope, MobiMedia is intended to provide a unique international forum for researchers from industry and academia, working in multimedia coding and mobile networking fiel! ds to study new applications, solutions, and standards. Original unpublished contributions are solicited that can improve the knowledge and practice in the integrated design of efficient technologies and the relevant provision of advanced mobile multimedia applications. One important environment for this diffusion is the domestic environment, or Oikos as it was known in ancient Greece. Peoples’ living environments are particularly important when one takes into account the world’s aging population and the fact that as people grow older they are increasingly relying on technology. People will however, have differing levels of computer knowledge and assisted living needs. As a result of these differences the first key area of PETRA is: how to build pervasive technologies for assistive environments that are non-intrusive and easy to use for the end user. Overview The third Workshop on Hot Topics in Autonomic Computing will bring together a broad range of researchers from the fields of computer systems, networks, and autonomic computing to discuss new ideas and developments in conquering the challenges of managing ever-more complex large-scale systems. The goal of the workshop is to promote community wide discussion of potentially high-impact ideas that will influence and foster continued research in improving the manageability and reliability of computing systems. The focus of this year's workshop is grand challenges in autonomic computing. Through a highly interactive workshop, our goal is to define the critical research problems facing the management of large-scale systems, and to outline promising research directions to attacking these problems. Attendance at the workshop is limited and will be by invitation only. If you are interested in attending, please submit an abstract describing a grand challenge for self-adaptive systems, accompanied by a sketch on how to address it. A grand challenge is a problem whose solution requires 5-10 years of effort and will have significant technical and societal impact. Abstracts are limited to two pages in length and are due at midnight (Central Standard Time) on April 11, 2008. Submissions should be sent to hotacIII-submit(a)cs.northwestern.edu. Submitters will be notified of decisions on April 25, 2008. Rather than publishing workshop proceedings, we expect the attendees to contribute to a written report on the key research challenges in this field, to be published in one of the main computer science magazines (such as the Communication of the ACM, IEEE Computer or USENIX ;login), and to a discussion summary that will be presented by the organizers to the general ICAC audience. At the same time, critical momentum is building to significantly revise or even replace the current Internet architecture. Several substantial Future Internet initiatives have started in Europe, the US and Asia, and the topic is also actively being discussed in the vendor and network operator communities. These Future Internet efforts offer the exciting opportunity to design radically different approaches to supporting host and network mobility and multihoming, and may eventually lead to an internetwork architecture with significantly more advanced mobility features than those that the piecemeal extensions of the current Internet protocols result in. Moreover, there are also other types of middleboxes, such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) gateways, Application Layer Gateways (ALG), Performance Enhancing Proxies (PEP) and web proxies. These intermediary boxes perform functions different from normal IP packet treatment, which can even change the content of packets or do rerouting of IP packets. There have been diverse views on the value of middleboxes. Some believe that middleboxes introduce problems for network applications as well as challenges to the traditional end-to-end Internet architecture. These issues range, for instance, but not limited to, from naming and addressing of nodes behind NATs, directionality of communication establishment, and performance impairments. On the other hand, many administrators and operators see the middleboxes represent an important part for their network operations. For example, firewalls are widely deployed with the intention of securing enterprise, campus and home networks, so as to block attacks to nodes or keep nodes from sending malicious traffic. The Internet community has acknowledged the emergence of the middleboxes and developed middlebox control and coordination protocols that allow end hosts (or application proxies) to learn about the presence of middleboxes and communicate their needs (i.e. required packet treatment) to those devices. A number of middlebox control protocols, such as UPnP, MIDCOM and STUN, have been developed over the years and are partially used in current deployments. The papers in this special issue will focus on the state-of-the-art research in various aspects of middleboxes and middlebox control mechanisms, which help to understand their impact to the Internet architecture and network operations, and how they can be further integrated, or leveraged for different purposes, such as load balancing and mobile network environments, among the others. Moreover, there are also other types of middleboxes, such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) gateways, Application Layer Gateways (ALG), Performance Enhancing Proxies (PEP) and web proxies. These intermediary boxes perform functions different from normal IP packet treatment, which can even change the content of packets or do rerouting of IP packets. There have been diverse views on the value of middleboxes. Some believe that middleboxes introduce problems for network applications as well as challenges to the traditional end-to-end Internet architecture. These issues range, for instance, but not limited to, from naming and addressing of nodes behind NATs, directionality of communication establishment, and performance impairments. On the other hand, many administrators and operators see the middleboxes represent an important part for their network operations. For example, firewalls are widely deployed with the intention of securing enterprise, campus and home networks, so as to block attacks to nodes or keep nodes from sending malicious traffic. The Internet community has acknowledged the emergence of the middleboxes and developed middlebox control and coordination protocols that allow end hosts (or application proxies) to learn about the presence of middleboxes and communicate their needs (i.e. required packet treatment) to those devices. A number of middlebox control protocols, such as UPnP, MIDCOM and STUN, have been developed over the years and are partially used in current deployments. The papers in this special issue will focus on the state-of-the-art research in various aspects of middleboxes and middlebox control mechanisms, which help to understand their impact to the Internet architecture and network operations, and how they can be further integrated, or leveraged for different purposes, such as load balancing and mobile network environments, among the others. Hence, energy is of paramount importance in wireless sensor networks in order to achieve maximum network lifetime. Due to the energy constraint of sensor devices, wireless sensor network necessitates an energy-aware design to ensure the longevity of the network. While most wireless sensor networks use battery-operated computing and sensing devices, new technologies like energy harvesting have been emerging and getting much attention in the research community recently. In addition, each layer of the protocol stack can employ various techniques to conserve energy while the hardware designs of motes can focus on extending its lifetime. This workshop intends to bring together the researchers working on energy-related issues in wireless sensor network. WEWSN will be held as a one-day workshop in conjuction with DCOSS '08, co-locating with several related workshops on special topics, including the Workshop on Localized Algorithms and Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks (LOCALGOS), the Workshop on Information Theory for Sensor Networks (WITS), the Workshop on Sensor Network Engineering (IWSNE), the Workshop on Wireless Sensor Network Deployments (WiDeploy). Therefore, the workshop aims at providing an ideal venue for researchers to share their ideas and discuss their latest research works. SCOPE Authors are invited to submit original, previously unpublished manuscripts that demonstrate current research related to energy in wireless sensor network. Posters will be presented during a specially designated session of the conference. The poster session is meant to introduce new or ongoing work and provide opportunities for authors to interact directly with conference attendees. Posters are specially suited for presenting controversial research directions that may generate discussion, or promising ideas not yet validated through extensive evaluation. Awards will be given for the best poster of the session and the best poster presented by a student. Poster submissions must include an extended abstract no longer than one 8.5x11-inch page, including all figures and references. This abstract should be formatted in two columns, single-spaced, with a font no smaller than 10-point. Optionally, submissions may also include an electronic copy of the poster. Please note that easels will be provided at the conference for 3x4 feet posters (approximately 0.75x1.0 meters), and the posters should be sized appropriately. Submissions must be in Adobe PDF. Particularly encouraged are the demonstrations that include participation by conference attendees. Research prototypes as well as commercial products are welcome. However, MobiSys is not an appropriate forum for marketing or sales presentations. The presenter is expected to understand the system being demonstrated and explain the technical contributions of the system to the audience. Demonstrations of previously published systems are also welcome. Demonstrations will be selected based on the expected interest from the MobiSys audience. Awards will be given for the best demo of the session and the best demo presented by a student. A demo submission requires only an extended abstract no longer than one 8.5x11-inch page, including all figures and references, describing the demonstration as well as any special requirements (other than a demo booth/table). The extended abstract should be formatted in 8.5x11-inch pages, two columns, single-spaced, with a font no smaller than 10-point. Submissions must be in Adobe PDF. Demo proposals must be submitted electronically by sending the extended abstract as an attachment in an email message to mobisys_demos(a)acm.org. The subject line should read "MOBISYS DEMO SUBMISSION" (in upper-case letters). The body of the email should include, in plain text, the title of the demo and the author list, including affiliations. Such networks can be randomly and rapidly deployed and reconfigured and easily tailored to specific applications including entertainment! , civilian, military, etc. Moreover, an ad hoc architecture is highly robust to node failure and can provide a high-level of fault tolerance due to nodal redundancy and its distributed nature. Furthermore, energy efficiency can be achieved through multi-hop routing communication. Bandwidth reuse can also benefit from dividing the single long range hop to multiple short hops with each hop having a shorter range. Several challenges face are standing in the way to achieving ubiquitous deployment of ad hoc and sensor networks. These include variable topology, device heterogeneity, limited power supply and the lack of effective energy-efficient design, lack of QoS and application support,etc. This symposium aims at providing a forum for sharing ideas amongresearchers and practitioners working on state-of-the-art solutions to the challenges above. Consequently, next to questions dealing with the technological feasibility, questions dealing with the manageability and transparency of context-based services from a user perspective come to the fore. In particular, ubiquitous computing applications help bridging between virtual and real-world context dimensions (both, concerning virtual and real context sensors and virtual and real context factors). The resulting system often remains intransparent to users, it is not immediately accessible recurring on conventionalized behavioural practices. This workshop aims to contribute on the one hand to the collection of use-oriented problems in context-based interaction. Furthermore, we aim to discuss resulting implications regarding the technical design of interfaces as well as soft- and hardware architectures. Special attention is given to context modeling and implementation of the various application scenarios as well as to the associated possibilities of manual (adaptability) or automatic (adaptivity) in-use-adjustment. A further special area of interest within a user-oriented perspective is the understanding of problem dynamics in scenarios with multiple-context systems and –technologies, and problem dynamics of emergence or evolution of context-based systems. We would like to invite in particular researchers and practitioners to contributions dealing with the following questions: - What practical experiences – positive as well as negative – have been made with regard to the usage of context-based systems in real organizational settings? What experiences have been made with adaptation mechanisms (automatic as well as interactive) of such systems in these settings? - How can relations between context descriptions/models, context sensors and context-based services become describable in a way that they can be inform end users? What framing conditions apply for interfaces that aim to achieve this? - What experiences have been collected with ontologies and folksonomies? How can systems be designed more practice-oriented? - How can context architectures be effectively designed for sustainable usages (Context evolution, context adaptation, traceability for end-users)? - How do architectures look like that are appropriate for the realization of context-adaptive systems that remain modifyable in-use? However, in recent years, other applications of relay communications have emerged. One such emerging application is to assist in the communication between the source and destination via some cooperation protocol. By controlling medium access between source and relays coupled with the appropriate modulation or coding in such cooperative schemes, it has been found that the diversity of the system can be improved. In multi-user systems, different users can also act as cooperative partners or relays to share resources and assist each other in information transmission, thereby creating a cooperative network. One other emerging application is the exchange of information between multiple users through relay(s). In such cases, by exploiting the knowledge of one's own transmitted signal, the throughput of these systems can be drastically increased. For cooperative and relay communications, the MAC layer also has many unique features. The MAC in this case, is concerned with more than one hop communication, is distributed and cooperative and works for multipoint-to-multipoint communication. The MAC also needs to have knowledge about network topology and account for node mobility. Accordingly, a new design of the MAC layer has to be devised to include new functionalities as well as MAC layer routing. With the large benefits to be reaped from employing cooperative and relay techniques, several standardization groups, such as IEEE 802.16 and IEEE 802.11, have started standardization processes to include such technologies into their prevailing standards. These efforts will no doubt attract even more interests from the academia and industry, advancing cooperative and relay technologies even further in the coming years. With interests from both the research and industrial communities gaining momentum, there is an urgent need to better understand as well as to keep track of cutting edge research in cooperative and relay communications. We plan this special issue to help address that need, as well as to help researchers looking to jump on the bandwagon. Hence, it is becoming increasingly important: to devise con- ceptual models and paradigms for change tolerance; to propose mechanisms to model, design, and develop adaptive and dependable systems; to provide analytical and simulation tools to measure system ability to withstand faults and to optimally re-adjust to new environments; to develop scalable, maintainable, cost- effective middleware infrastructures able to support and ease the development of adaptive and dependable mobile ubiquitous services. Building on the success of the last year event, this workshop aims at fostering exchange of ideas and lively discussions in order to reduce the gap between research achievements and industrial applications in the field of adaptive and dependable mobile ubiquitous systems. Moreover, there are also other types of middleboxes, such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) gateways, Application Layer Gateways (ALG), Performance Enhancing Proxies (PEP) and web proxies. These intermediary boxes perform functions different from normal IP packet treatment, which can even change the content of packets or do rerouting of IP packets. There have been diverse views on the value of middleboxes. Some believe that middleboxes introduce problems for network applications as well as challenges to the traditional end-to-end Internet architecture. These issues range, for instance, but not limited to, from naming and addressing of nodes behind NATs, directionality of communication establishment, and performance impairments. On the other hand, many administrators and operators see the middleboxes represent an important part for their network operations. For example, firewalls are widely deployed with the intention of securing enterprise, campus and home networks, so as to block attacks to nodes or keep nodes from sending malicious traffic. The Internet community has acknowledged the emergence of the middleboxes and developed middlebox control and coordination protocols that allow end hosts (or application proxies) to learn about the presence of middleboxes and communicate their needs (i.e. required packet treatment) to those devices. A number of middlebox control protocols, such as UPnP, MIDCOM and STUN, have been developed over the years and are partially used in current deployments. The papers in this special issue will focus on the state-of-the-art research in various aspects of middleboxes and middlebox control mechanisms, which help to understand their impact to the Internet architecture and network operations, and how they can be further integrated, or leveraged for different purposes, such as load balancing and mobile network environments, among the others. Emergence of principles and practices like Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and Web 2.0, along with gradual adoption of industry standards like the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP), IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), and Java API for Internetworking (JAIN) is making this convergence possible. The challenges to the operators are to provide suitable interfaces to an increasingly complex and heterogeneous underlying wireless access landscape, typically consisting of cellular (e.g., UMTS, LTE, etc.), metropolitan area (e.g., WiMAX) and short range (e.g., WiFi) systems. Future telecom service providers, on the other hand, are expected to stem from the fact that a converged network needs to carry a multitude of high-bandwidth triple-play (voice, video and data) services over a single network that is much more distributed, multipoint, diverse, and interactive in nature. End users will interact with the network via sophisticated devices, and be able to select from a wide range of Quality-of-Service (QoS) options. To cater to these emerging service paradigms, network intelligence has to address several aspects including multimedia session management, coordination of multi-protocol connections, advanced security, etc. Multimedia content delivery over the Internet has been extensively researched. However, the related engineering problem is evolving into the problem of how to dynamically create content distribution infrastructures and services in the context of telco provider managed networks. To stay ahead in the competition and provide market leading offerings, carriers further need to enable a global ecosystem of third-party independent application developers to deliver converged services leveraging open standards-based service delivery platform. Finally, to establish a common architecture for the convergence among services and networks, standards and frameworks will be required to ensure the interoperability of networks and applications, and facilitate best utilization of the existing telecommunications infrastructure within the converged ecosystem. It is in this setting of an open services market with service operators, application developers as well as the IT infrastructure as stakeholders, that the role of middleware is crucial. Middleware-enabled rapid development and deployment of new applications allows early introduction of value-added services to attract new customers and retain existing ones. Established telcos often have a plethora of legacy systems, such as Intelligent Networks (IN), Business / Operational Support Systems (BSS/OSS), Web-based systems and SIP/IMSbased services, which can all interoperate through open interfaces provided by the middleware layer, allowing a seamless, autonomic interaction between them. The arguments for a middleware-oriented consolidation of services in the telecommunications service provider/carrier space are also largely applicable to the enterprise segment. There are, of course, differences in requirements and service expectations for corporate users as opposed to consumers; however, the trend towards consolidation of IT and telecom architectures is just as compelling. Further, middleware approaches can offer scalability and load-balancing capabilities to critical infrastructure components. For example, the roll out of distributed / federated presence-based applications will necessitate management of huge amounts of subscriber data residing in the middleware. Finally, there are challenges of enabling guaranteed QoS and seamless access to triple-play services. In the emerging heterogeneous networking environment, cross-layer and inter-system optimization studies are essential to guarantee that these challenges are met. In this regard, large-scale distributed experimental testbeds with real or virtual components interconnected through an efficient middleware can be leveraged to validate promising approaches, algorithms and mechanisms prior to commercial deployment. In this workshop, we seek original, unpublished papers on different aspects of middleware technologies for enabling Next-Generation Network (NGN) services and applications. Ad hoc wireless networks allow anywhere, anytime network connectivity with complete lack of control, ownership, and regulatory influence. The last few years have witnessed a wealth of research ideas on ad hoc and sensor networks that are moving rapidly into commercialization and standardization. Such networks can be randomly and rapidly deployed and reconfigured and easily tailored to specific applications including entertainment, civilian, military, etc. Moreover, an ad hoc architecture is highly robust to node failure and can provide a high-level of fault tolerance due to nodal redundancy and its distributed nature. Furthermore, energy efficiency can be achieved through multi-hop routing communication. Bandwidth reuse can also benefit from dividing the single long range hop to multiple short hops with each hop having a shorter range. Several challenges face are standing in the way to achieving ubiquitous deployment of ad hoc and sensor networks. These include variable topology, device heterogeneity, limited power supply and the lack of effective energy-efficient design, lack of QoS and application support, etc. This symposium aims at providing a forum for sharing ideas among researchers and practitioners working on state-of-the-art solutions to the challenges above. Different types of models have been proposed in the last decade, from those founded on purely synthetic movements, such as the ones based on purely random movements of the nodes to the ones based aiming at reproducing the mobility patterns inside specific places like campuses or cities. In addition, efforts to collect real traces of people movement have been made and traces have been made available and used in simulators. Despite these efforts, the problem of understanding and modeling mobility, and, more specifically, human mobility remains of great interest for the mobile ad hoc networks community, as many questions are still unanswered and evaluation methodologies still unsatisfactory. New insights and more refined and realistic models are still needed, bringing together real world measurements and mathematical characterization of node mobility. These problems are of interest to anyone working on mobile networking, as these models are often at the basis of the performance evaluation, comparison, and validation of new approaches and solutions. We solicit the papers on mobility models for various wireless networks including MANETs, DTNs and vehicular networks. Papers on mobility characterizations based on real traces are also welcomed. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers working or interested in mobility modeling and characterizations. We wish to build a lively forum to propose and discuss recent advances in mobility modeling both from theoretical and practical point of views. The workshop will be opened to contributions from researchers tackling the research problems in this area from different perspectives, with the aim of discussing the many open issues in movement modeling trying to identify novel solutions to be investigated also by means of collaborations among the participants of the workshop. Basically, the Slepian-Wolf theorem states that, in the lossless case, the optimal rate achieved when performing joint encoding and decoding of two or more correlated sources can theoretically be reached by doing separate encoding and joint decoding. The Wyner-Ziv theorem extends this result to lossy coding. Based on this paradigm, a new video coding model is defined, referred to as distributed video coding (DVC), which relies on a new statistical framework, instead of the deterministic approach of conventional coding techniques such as MPEG standards. DVC offers a number of potential advantages. It first allows for a flexible partitioning of the complexity between the encoder and decoder. Furthermore, due to its intrinsic joint source-channel coding framework, DVC is robust to channel errors. Because it does no longer rely on a prediction loop, DVC provides codec independent scalability. Finally, DVC is well suited for multiview coding by exploiting correlation between views without requiring communications between the cameras. High-quality original papers are solicited for this special issue. Communication possibilities in vehicles have been restricted in the past mainly to cellular communication networks. Enabling broader communication facilities in cars is an important contribution to the global trend towards ubiquitous communications. Cars should provide access to Internet and should be able to communicate among themselves, supporting new services and applications. The objective of this 1-day workshop is to attract the most recent developments in the area of experimental evaluation and deployment experiences on vehicular networks, and bring together active researchers in an environment that encourages discussion and exchange of ideas. Mobile IPv6 (MIPv6) is a promising technology that handles the mobility management and provides the seamless mobile communications. It is expected that MIPv6, as a standard for mobile communication, will open the Mobile Internet Age. In MIPv6, it has been observed that mobility for mobile devices can be more efficiently handled if mobility management is broken down into localized mobility management and global mobility management. Therefore, host-based approaches such as Fast-Handovers for MIPv6 (FMIPv6) and Hierarchical MIPv6 (HMIPv6) have been proposed for localized mobility management. In addition, Proxy MIPv6 (PMIPv6) has been presented for the network-based localized mobility management (NETLMM), which does not require mobile devices to be involved in the signaling for mobility management. This workshop will focus on the challenges and solutions for MIPv6 with an emphasis on PMIPv6 and NETLMM, which have recently gained considerable attention. The MobiWorld workshop will provide an opportunity for academic and industry professionals to discuss the latest issues and progress in the area of MIPv6 and NETLMM. In addition, the workshop will publish high quality papers which are closely related to the various theories and practical applications in MIPv6 and NETLMM. Please apologize for multiple copies. ********************* CALL FOR PAPERS ******************** IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine Special Issue on "Practical aspects of mobility in wireless self-organizing networks" ********************************************************** Wireless and mobile computing advanced significantly in the last decade. In particular, we now face the possibility to spontaneously establish wireless self- organizing networks, such as ad hoc, disruption-tolerant, sensor, and wireless mesh networks. These spontaneous self-organizing networks have been the focus of intensive research activity in recent years. Spontaneous networks arise from the cooperation of mobile devices in an ad hoc fashion requiring no previous infrastructure in place. A key point to couple research and real-life applications in this context is to understand how mobility (of devices, users, and applications) impacts practical networking aspects. The knowledge accumulated so far in the area of wireless self-organizing networks is in general supported by either simulation or theoretical analysis relying on strong assumptions. The research community needs a step forward and should definitely consider real aspects of mobility in their protocols and algorithms. Such a situation is to be compared with the one found for infrastructure-based networks (e.g., cellular networks), in which mobility has been thoroughly investigated (both theoretically and through measurements) and properly incorporated in their management architecture. In wireless self-organizing networks, contrary to common belief, much is still to be done in this domain, and definitive solutions are still to emerge. Mobility can no longer be seen as an issue to be hidden from higher layers of the protocol stack, but as an expected characteristic of today's communication systems. In this context, it is of utmost importance to address issues related to the impact of mobility as seen in practice, covering characterization, modeling, and applications of mobility in modern wireless networks. The research community working on wireless self-organizing networks has recently started giving more attention to the practical mobility issues in this area. This may be attested by the increasing number of initiatives worldwide like the many measurement campaigns and the considerable body of developed theoretical background work supported by practical arguments (e.g., mobility models, mobility increasing network capacity, relationship between node mobility and wireless channel conditions). The goal of this special issue is to help filling this gap by presenting contributions ranging from the impact of mobility on self-organizing networks to mobility-aware architectures for self-organizing networks. As we intend to focus on the practical impacts of mobility in wireless self-organizing networks, papers presenting insights from the applicability of mobility measurements and realistic mobility models in this context are also expected. We will be particularly interested in contributions that explore mobility to improve the behavior of network protocols and algorithms. We are soliciting papers covering, but not limited to, the following topics: * Mobility-aware architectures for self-organizing networks. * Impact of mobility on self-organizing networks. * Practical applicability of wireless testbeds and mobility measurements. * Realistic mobility models for self-organizing networks. * Mobility-centric killer applications. GI/ITG KuVs Fachgespräch WMAN (Wireless Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks) Fachgespräch der GI/ITG-Fachgruppe Kommunikation und Verteilte Systeme Universität Ulm, 24./25.04.2008 Aufruf zur Einreichung von Beiträgen Zielsetzung: Mobile Ad-hoc Netzwerke (MANETs) stellen heute eines der aktivsten Forschungsgebiete dar. Neben der grundlegenden Organisation des Routing-Prozesses finden sich in MANETs weitere wichtige Fragestellungen wie Autokonfiguration, Sicherheit oder effizienter Nutzung von Ressourcen. Bedingt durch die beschränkten Ressourcen mobiler Kleingeraete, das Fehlen zentraler Instanzen und die hohe Dynamik von Ad-hoc Netzen lassen sich bekannte Lösungen aus dem Bereich drahtgebundener Netze nicht ohne Weiteres übertragen. Aus diesen Gründen behandelt dieses Fachgespräch die zugrundeliegenden Funktechnologien ebenso wie Fragestellungen bis zur Anwendungsschicht. Auch konkrete Anwendungsszenarien wie Fahrzeug-Fahrzeug-Kommunikation oder Unterwasser-Ad-hoc Netze sind von Interesse.
