The symposium is primarily interested in papers reporting on innovative research resulting in real implementations and working prototypes. Work in progress and new ideas will also be accepted as well as presentations of new products. The program will consist of technical sessions, product/industrial presentations, a keynote, a demonstration session, a poster session and one panel, scheduled over 2.5 days. During the event, an industrial exhibition will be also organized. Short tutorials, especially in non-technical related areas, such as transportation policies and social aspects will also be organized, in order to offer a multi-disciplinary perspective on the field. The event is co-located with MobiQuitous 2008 (http://www.mobiquitous.org/), allowing researchers and practitioners from these related fields to meet and exchange their ideas and experiences. TOPICS OF INTEREST The symposium calls for three categories of contributions: research, position and product presentation papers. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: - Design and implementation of computer systems for network-connected vehicles - Middleware and service architectures for safety, road sensing, route planning, in-car networking and other vehicle-centric applications - Protocols for data collection and dissemination over network-connected cars - Security and privacy issues in vehicular networks, systems, services and applications - Location-aware computing models for vehicular systems - Driver-to-computer interfaces - Data management systems for road sensing and traffic monitoring - Vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communication protocols - Inter-vehicle distributed systems for entertainment and gaming - Pervasive computing applications using vehicular networks - Tools and methodologies for vehicular computing systems verification and evaluation - Fault-tolerance solutions for vehicular computing systems - Maintenance for vehicular computing software - Experience reports of testing vehicular computing systems on real-world conditions - Policies, laws and regulations for adopting vehicular computing technologies - Social and psychological implications of vehicular computing applications SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS Paper submission will be handled electronically. As IT systems, networks, and services become increasingly complex, this task becomes ever more difficult. In recent years, there has been considerable success in applying feedback control theory to analyzing and designing run-time IT control systems. Feedback control theory complements traditional modeling by providing formal mechanisms to dynamically control behavior of systems at run-time. The Third International Workshop on Feedback Control Implementation and Design in Computing Systems and Networks (FeBID 2008) will be held June 6th, 2008 in Annapolis, Maryland, USA. The FeBID 2008 workshop will offer a unique opportunity for researchers and practitioners to discuss recent and innovative results in applying control theory to controlling performance of computing systems and networks. In particular, we now face the possibility to spontaneously establish wireless self- organizing networks, such as ad hoc, disruption-tolerant, sensor, and wireless mesh networks. These spontaneous self-organizing networks have been the focus of intensive research activity in recent years. Spontaneous networks arise from the cooperation of mobile devices in an ad hoc fashion requiring no previous infrastructure in place. A key point to couple research and real-life applications in this context is to understand how mobility (of devices, users, and applications) impacts practical networking aspects. The knowledge accumulated so far in the area of wireless self-organizing networks is in general supported by either simulation or theoretical analysis relying on strong assumptions. The research community needs a step forward and should definitely consider real aspects of mobility in their protocols and algorithms. Such a situation is to be compared with the one found for infrastructure-based networks (e.g., cellular networks), in which mobility has been thoroughly investigated (both theoretically and through measurements) and properly incorporated in their management architecture. In wireless self-organizing networks, contrary to common belief, much is still to be done in this domain, and definitive solutions are still to emerge. Mobility can no longer be seen as an issue to be hidden from higher layers of the protocol stack, but as an expected characteristic of today's communication systems. In this context, it is of utmost importance to address issues related to the impact of mobility as seen in practice, covering characterization, modeling, and applications of mobility in modern wireless networks. The research community working on wireless self-organizing networks has recently started giving more attention to the practical mobility issues in this area. This may be attested by the increasing number of initiatives worldwide like the many measurement campaigns and the considerable body of developed theoretical background work supported by practical arguments (e.g., mobility models, mobility increasing network capacity, relationship between node mobility and wireless channel conditions). The goal of this special issue is to help filling this gap by presenting contributions ranging from the impact of mobility on self-organizing networks to mobility-aware architectures for self-organizing networks. As we intend to focus on the practical impacts of mobility in wireless self-organizing networks, papers presenting insights from the applicability of mobility measurements and realistic mobility models in this context are also expected. We will be particularly interested in contributions that explore mobility to improve the behavior of network protocols and algorithms. We are soliciting papers covering, but not limited to, the following topics: * Mobility-aware architectures for self-organizing networks. * Impact of mobility on self-organizing networks. * Practical applicability of wireless testbeds and mobility measurements. * Realistic mobility models for self-organizing networks. * Mobility-centric killer applications. This workshop is devoted to distributed algorithms and theoretical methods in the context of mobile ad hoc and sensor networking and computing. The workshop is intended to foster cooperation among researchers in mobile ad hoc and sensor networking and theoreticians in algorithm and theory, and push the theoretical research forward for a deeper understanding about ad hoc and sensor networking and computing. This workshop covers the all areas of ad hoc and sensor networking and computing, from physical issues up to applications, with a focus of theoretical and algorithmic aspect. In particular, it will cover distributed algorithms, optimizations, analysis and modeling, randomized algorithms, mechanism design, and theoretical methods in ad hoc and sensor networking and computing. WORKSHOP SCOPE ---------------------------------------------------------------- A truly extended use of mobile computing technologies asks for effective software engineering techniques to design, develop and maintain novel ubiquitous services with challenging dependa- bility requirements in highly heterogeneous and error-prone mobile environments. To overcome the intrinsic limitations of mobile devices and environments, a variety of research studies have produced methods and proof-of-concept prototypes for sup- porting non-critical applications. However, it is still unclear whether current solutions can satisfy the challenging adapta- bility and dependability requirements of the emerging mobile ubiquitous services, such as mobile commerce, wireless control of robots, healthcare computing, and video-surveillance. Hence, it is becoming increasingly important: to devise con- ceptual models and paradigms for change tolerance; to propose mechanisms to model, design, and develop adaptive and dependable systems; to provide analytical and simulation tools to measure system ability to withstand faults and to optimally re-adjust to new environments; to develop scalable, maintainable, cost- effective middleware infrastructures able to support and ease the development of adaptive and dependable mobile ubiquitous services. Building on the success of the last year event, this workshop aims at fostering exchange of ideas and lively discussions in order to reduce the gap between research achievements and industrial applications in the field of adaptive and dependable mobile ubiquitous systems. Researchers and practitioners are encouraged to participate with high quality papers able to identify open issues, to discuss the limits and/or advantages of existing solutions, or to propose original and innovative techniques for adaptive and dependable applications over mobile environments. This year, ADAMUS seeks two different kinds of contribu- tion: full papers and live demonstration proposals. Live demon- strations must be accompanied by a short demo proposal descri- bing the demo and the related research activity. * Full papers must be written in English and should not exceed 6 pages in IEEE proceedings style. * Demo proposals must be written in English and should not exce- ed 3 pages in IEEE proceedings style. * Demo Plans: Authors of all accepted demo proposals must also submit a Demo Plan including a short description of the demo (text, video, poster) and a short report on infra- structure needs (power, network, physical space needed). All submissions will be handled electronically. Typical application domains for MCN include critical infrastructure protection, emergency and crisis intervention, and military operations. Such networking is essential for safety, security and economic vitality in our complex world characterized by uncertainty, heterogeneity and emergent behaviors. MCN should comprise the best possible networking technology, infrastructure and services that may alleviate the risk and help save the lives of both the general public and the network users. As advances in pervasive computing, wireless communication, ad hoc and mesh networking and networked sensor systems continue, more opportunities are being opened to mission-critical networks to benefit from these technologies. A primary challenge to the operations of mission-critical networks is to deploy a communication network that is dependable, autonomic, secure, and rapidly deployable. In order to operate effectively, the deployed networks should support services such as location determination of authorized and unauthorized entities, audio and video communication, secure emergency calling and alerting, and in-situ and remote sensing and control in a secure and dependable manner. In addition, efficient operation of such networks that typically include numerous resource-constrained components may benefit from cross-layer optimization, cognition, resource engineering, visual analytics, and service-oriented architecture. Another key feature for mission-critical networking is to support interactions among multiple heterogeneous networks. This workshop solicits high quality technical contributions to the area of mission-critical networking. The manuscript must explicitly address relevance to MCN. SCOPE OF MMNS 2008 Since 1997, MMNS has established itself as a major conference for research and innovation in the management of multimedia technology and networked services. The objective of the conference is to bring together researchers and scientists from academia and industry interested in state-of-the-art management of converged multimedia networks and services across heterogeneous networking infrastructures, while creating a public venue for result dissemination and intellectual collaboration. The convergence of existing and emerging technologies such as broadband, mobile, and broadcast networks is considered as a promising opportunity for existing providers to increase theirs service subscriber base so that 4G vision and beyond becomes a reality. Efficient management of these services is a key ingredient in the effort to provide cost effective, innovative services, and mass market solutions that are likely to become a major source of income for different stakeholders. The need to evolve management tools, solutions, platforms and methodologies to keep pace with emerging networks is at a critical juncture with the proliferation of mobile and wireless systems, intelligent and broadband networks, triple play (data/voice/video) convergence, and the integration of embedded computing and communications. The academic and industry research communities should unify forces to address the challenges of developing and operating converged multimedia networks and services. Inevitably, integrated management is a key element in addressing this challenge. The MMNS 2008 technical program committee is soliciting research papers in the broad area of network and service management that address new models, architectures and technological designs to enable multimedia and mobility proliferation in NGNs. Basic multimedia applications are already available for current generation devices, and more complex broadcasting services are under development or expected to be launched soon, among which mobile and interactive television (ITV). Among the many challenging issues opened by these developments is the problem of personalization of such services: adaptation of the content to the technical environment of the users (device and network type) and to their individual preferences, providing personalized assistance for selecting and locating interesting programes among an overwhelming number of proposed services. Through the use of mobile devices embedded in the surrounding physical environment, users can be provided with transparent computing and communication services at all times and in all places. The complexity of providing such services stems from the fact that the communication devices and the objects with which they interact may both be mobile. Their implementation requires advances in wireless network technologies and devices, development of infrastructures supporting cognitive environments, discovery and identification of ubiquitous computing applications and services, and an understanding of the cross-layer interactions between all of these components. The Fifth Annual International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Computing, Networking and Services (MobiQuitous 2008) will provide a forum where practitioners and researchers coming from many areas involved in ubiquitous solutions design and deployment will be able to interact and exchange experiences needed to build successful ubiquitous systems. However, in recent years, other applications of relay communications have emerged. One such emerging application is to assist in the communication between the source and destination via some cooperation protocol. By controlling medium access between source and relays coupled with the appropriate modulation or coding in such cooperative schemes, it has been found that the diversity of the system can be improved. In multi-user systems, different users can also act as cooperative partners or relays to share resources and assist each other in information transmission, thereby creating a cooperative network. One other emerging application is the exchange of information between multiple users through relay(s). In such cases, by exploiting the knowledge of one's own transmitted signal, the throughput of these systems can be drastically increased. For cooperative and relay communications, the MAC layer also has many unique features. The MAC in this case, is concerned with more than one hop communication, is distributed and cooperative and works for multipoint-to-multipoint communication. The MAC also needs to have knowledge about network topology and account for node mobility. Accordingly, a new design of the MAC layer has to be devised to include new functionalities as well as MAC layer routing. With the large benefits to be reaped from employing cooperative and relay techniques, several standardization groups, such as IEEE 802.16 and IEEE 802.11, have started standardization processes to include such technologies into their prevailing standards. These efforts will no doubt attract even more interests from the academia and industry, advancing cooperative and relay technologies even further in the coming years. With interests from both the research and industrial communities gaining momentum, there is an urgent need to better understand as well as to keep track of cutting edge research in cooperative and relay communications. We plan this special issue to help address that need, as well as to help researchers looking to jump on the bandwagon. Therefore, the special issue will focus on recent advances as well as survey papers in cooperative and relay communications. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following topics: . In recent years, peer-to-peer (P2P) architecture has aroused much attention both in research communities and in industries. It has played a vital role in wide spreading growth of multimedia applications including Multimedia Streaming, Video on Demand and P2P based IPTV services. P2P networking is promising for its several favourable characteristics, such as self-organization, selfconfiguration, self-healing, easy maintenance, high scalability and reliable services. On the other hand, new media compression standards such as MPEG-4, H.264 AVC and SVC (Scalable Video Coding) have revolutionized the digital media industry by proposition high quality, bandwidth-effective, and scalable delivery of digital content to heterogeneous networks and terminals. These standards will be widely used for Video-on-demand, digital video via cable/satellite/DSL, video streaming for Internet and wireless, and IPTV. It is expected that IPTV, as a new emerging application, will have a great potential to generate new revenue to service providers. Till now, a number of architectures have been proposed for multimedia streaming and IPTV services, but still there is need for new optimized models, metrics, and methodologies to enhance the Quality of Service (QoS) for multimedia streaming and P2P-based IPTV services as a complete architecture. The effective contents delivery across the networks requires to intelligently adapting the digital contents in accordance to user preferences under the networks and terminals constraints with the efficient utilization of resources. The goal of this workshop is to provide a forum for sharing knowledge and expertise towards recent advances and technical challenges in multimedia streaming and IPTV services over P2P networks and possible approaches for future envisioning of the services. We solicit original contributions of high quality papers that describe the recent advances in streaming architectures, multimedia adaptation, and multimedia transmission approaches that support multimedia streaming and P2P based IPTV services. When working with real-world experiments or deployments, many new issues arise: the network environment may be composed of a variety of different technologies, leading to very heterogeneous network structures; software development for large scale networks poses new types of problems; prototype networks may differ significantly from the deployed system; actual sensor network deployments may need a complex combination of autonomous and manual configuration. Typical application domains for MCN include critical infrastructure protection, emergency and crisis intervention, and military operations. Such networking is essential for safety, security and economic vitality in our complex world characterized by uncertainty, heterogeneity and emergent behaviors. MCN should comprise the best possible networking technology, infrastructure and services that may alleviate the risk and help save the lives of both the general public and the network users. As advances in pervasive computing, wireless communication, ad hoc and mesh networking and networked sensor systems continue, more opportunities are being opened to mission-critical networks to benefit from these technologies. A primary challenge to the operations of mission-critical networks is to deploy a communication network that is dependable, autonomic, secure, and rapidly deployable. In order to operate effectively, the deployed networks should support services such as location determination of authorized and unauthorized entities, audio and video communication, secure emergency calling and alerting, and in-situ and remote sensing and control in a secure and dependable manner. In addition, efficient operation of such networks that typically include numerous resource-constrained components may benefit from cross-layer optimization, cognition, resource engineering, visual analytics, and service-oriented architecture. Another key feature for mission-critical networking is to support interactions among multiple heterogeneous networks. MMNS will provide participants with a high quality and intimate setting for discussion and debate. The conference is sponsored by the International Federation for Information Processing (IFIP) Working Group 6.6 on Management of Networks and Distributed Systems, with technical co-sponsorship by the IEEE Communications Society and specifically the Technical Committee on Network Operations and Management (CNOM). SCOPE OF MMNS 2008 Since 1997, MMNS has established itself as a major conference for research and innovation in the management of multimedia technology and networked services. The scope of the conference has been expanded in recent years to include management of emerging mobile and wireless networks. The objective of the conference is to bring together researchers and scientists from academia and industry interested in state-of-the-art management of converged multimedia networks and services across heterogeneous networking infrastructures, while creating a public venue for result dissemination and intellectual collaboration. The convergence of existing and emerging technologies such as broadband, mobile, and broadcast networks is considered as a promising opportunity for existing providers to increase theirs service subscriber base so that 4G vision and beyond becomes a reality. An important research effort is undertaken by main actors to face the multidimensional, in terms of transport technology, session signalling, and QoS provisioning, heterogeneity of Next Generation Networks (NGNs). Efficient management of these services is a key ingredient in the effort to provide cost effective, innovative services, and mass market solutions that are likely to become a major source of income for different stakeholders. The need to evolve management tools, solutions, platforms and methodologies to keep pace with emerging networks is at a critical juncture with the proliferation of mobile and wireless systems, intelligent and broadband networks, triple play (data/voice/video) convergence, and the integration of embedded computing and communications. The academic and industry research communities should unify forces to address the challenges of developing and operating converged multimedia networks and services. Inevitably, integrated management is a key element in addressing this challenge. The MMNS 2008 technical program committee is soliciting research papers in the broad area of network and service management that address new models, architectures and technological designs to enable multimedia and mobility proliferation in NGNs. This trend has forced the network and service providers to understand the limitations of current Internet and bring new technologies for delivering the video content to the end-user. Furthermore, criticality of the wireless networks pose new challenges in video delivery specific to the diverse set of underlying network technologies including Wi-Fi, WiMax etc. The focus of this workshop is to present and discuss recent advances in the wireless network technologies and video delivery mechanisms for supporting the broad spectrum of emerging video-centric applications. The workshop will have the goal of understanding the research and deployment challenges in building the Next Generation Mobile Video Internet. The time and cost of deploying, configuring and operating networks, already significant today, is expected to increase even further due to the exponential growth in numbers of network elements in the Internet, mobile networks, etc. Furthermore, the increasing sophistication and dynamic nature of many new networks and services make configuration more complex and further mandate continuous adaptation and validation of active configurations in real-time. These factors present major obstacles for the continued growth of networked systems. To overcome these obstacles, we need not only engineering principles for automated configuration management, but also real-time monitoring functions that trigger adaptation of configuration. The ultimate goals are to support future large-scale networks that will self- configure, dynamically adapt to external events and allow for low-cost operation. Current practices in configuration management are generally performed through low-level interfaces on a per-device basis. However, it is hard if not infeasible to generate, validate and tune configuration parameters in large-scale networks. On the other hand, many of the existing top-down configuration approaches lack scalability and testability in operational networks. Similarly, existing end-to-end monitoring applications usually depend on low-level network activity information, such as traffic counters, MIB variables, device logs, and alarms. A major challenge then is how to efficiently aggregate and analyze these data to construct high-level views of network operations in real-time. The theme for the first ANM workshop will be "Self-configuration for Large-scale Dynamic Networks," which relates to the aforementioned challenges. ANM offers a unique opportunity for researchers in this area to exchange both ideas and real- life experiences concerning next-generation network management. The workshop will provide a small-group setting for effective discussions and debate. The workshop solicits original papers on both completed work and work-in- progress. Papers that bring out new and interesting approaches at an early stage of their development are very welcome. The workshop will be held in conjunction with INFOCOM 2008, which draws many leading researchers in the field of networking. Papers on all topics of network management will be considered. WORKSHOP SCOPE ---------------------------------------------------------------- A truly extended use of mobile computing technologies asks for effective software engineering techniques to design, develop and maintain novel ubiquitous services with challenging dependa- bility requirements in highly heterogeneous and error-prone mobile environments. To overcome the intrinsic limitations of mobile devices and environments, a variety of research studies have produced methods and proof-of-concept prototypes for sup- porting non-critical applications. However, it is still unclear whether current solutions can satisfy the challenging adapta- bility and dependability requirements of the emerging mobile ubiquitous services, such as mobile commerce, wireless control of robots, healthcare computing, and video-surveillance. Hence, it is becoming increasingly important: to devise con- ceptual models and paradigms for change tolerance; to propose mechanisms to model, design, and develop adaptive and dependable systems; to provide analytical and simulation tools to measure system ability to withstand faults and to optimally re-adjust to new environments; to develop scalable, maintainable, cost- effective middleware infrastructures able to support and ease the development of adaptive and dependable mobile ubiquitous services. Building on the success of the last year event, this workshop aims at fostering exchange of ideas and lively discussions in order to reduce the gap between research achievements and industrial applications in the field of adaptive and dependable mobile ubiquitous systems. Researchers and practitioners are encouraged to participate with high quality papers able to identify open issues, to discuss the limits and/or advantages of existing solutions, or to propose original and innovative techniques for adaptive and dependable applications over mobile environments. This year, ADAMUS seeks two different kinds of contribu- tion: full papers and live demonstration proposals. Live demon- strations must be accompanied by a short demo proposal descri- bing the demo and the related research activity. * Full papers must be written in English and should not exceed 6 pages in IEEE proceedings style. * Demo proposals must be written in English and should not exce- ed 3 pages in IEEE proceedings style. * Demo Plans: Authors of all accepted demo proposals must also submit a Demo Plan including a short description of the demo (text, video, poster) and a short report on infra- structure needs (power, network, physical space needed). A lot of real-world applications have been already deployed and many of them will be based on wireless sensor networks. These applications include geographical monitoring, medical care, manufacturing, transportation, military, and surveillance systems. Due to the nature of wireless communication networks, many security challenges are faced when dealing and working with such technologies including eavesdropping, man-in-the-middle, spoofing and DDoS. Security is the key issue for reliable critical applications in wireless sensor networks. Advances in design and prototype of security mechanisms in wireless sensor network systems for protecting the confidentiality, availability, and integrity are crucial for the success of sensor applications. Original contributions are solicited in all the relevant security issues in wireless sensor networks, including but not limited to: Protocols and architectures for wireless sensor networks Key distribution and key management Provably-secure cryptographic protocols Public-key and symmetric-key cryptosystems, block ciphers, and hash functions Network security protocols: DNS security, routing, naming, denial-of-service attacks, TCP/IP, secure multicast Anonymity techniques Trust mechanisms Privacy Security and usability Automated analysis of protocols Authentication mechanisms Biometric-based security schemes RFID Submitted paper should not be considered elsewhere for publication and the authors must follow the guidelines for preparation of the manuscripts. The language of the journal is English. 12-point type in one of the standard fonts, Times, Helvetica, or Courier is preferred. The paper length should not exceed 20 pages total including all figures and illustrations. It is not necessary for authors to double-line space their manuscript. Tables must be on separate pages after the reference list, and not be incorporated into the main text. Figures should be uploaded as separate figure files. For example, they do not utilize the context of the interaction, nor the environmental changes in the user's proximity or the capabilities of the device itself. This context can include information about the situation and the user preferences, longer or shorter time usage histories, etc. To improve usability and to provide a better user experience, the interfaces of the devices should become more intelligent and require less intentional user inputs. In order to achieve this goal, novel interaction methods need to be developed and combined with statistical models of the user that capture, for example, her behavior, personal preferences and goals. Furthermore, the developed solutions need to be evaluated via extensive user tests to guarantee they are valuable to the users. To improve the dialogue between the different research areas and their practitioners, the workshop aims at bringing together researchers from the fields of user modeling, user interaction and user experience, with developers of mobile and ubiquitous applications. The ultimate goal of the workshop is to provide a common forum for exchanging ideas between these domains. The workshop welcomes two kinds of paper submissions: research papers and position papers. Also videos and demonstrations can be submitted. The research papers should present original research related to one or more of the following areas: * user interaction in mobile environments, * ubiquitous user modeling, and * mobile user experience. The position papers should address challenges in combining the above-mentioned areas, and beyond, for an improved mobile user experience, and propose approaches for overcoming these challenges. We encourage authors to take a visionary view and a critical stand towards current practices and trends. Different types of models have been proposed in the last decade, from those founded on purely synthetic movements, such as the ones based on purely random movements of the nodes to the ones based aiming at reproducing the mobility patterns inside specific places like campuses or cities. In addition, efforts to collect real traces of people movement have been made and traces have been made available and used in simulators. Despite these efforts, the problem of understanding and modeling mobility, and, more specifically, human mobility remains of great interest for the mobile ad hoc networks community, as many questions are still unanswered and evaluation methodologies still unsatisfactory. New insights and more refined and realistic models are still needed, bringing together real world measurements and mathematical characterization of node mobility. These problems are of interest to anyone working on mobile networking, as these models are often at the basis of the performance evaluation, comparison, and validation of new approaches and solutions. We solicit the papers on mobility models for various wireless networks including MANETs, DTNs and vehicular networks. Papers on mobility characterizations based on real traces are also welcomed. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers working or interested in mobility modeling and characterizations. We wish to build a lively forum to propose and discuss recent advances in mobility modeling both from theoretical and practical point of views. The workshop will be opened to contributions from researchers tackling the research problems in this area from different perspectives, with the aim of discussing the many open issues in movement modeling trying to identify novel solutions to be investigated also by means of collaborations among the participants of the workshop. Multicarrier communications is a very promising technique to deliver high data rate and combat delay spread over fading channel. Adaptability is an inherent advantage of multicarrier communication systems. It can be either implemented in each layer in the protocol stack or realized through a cross-layer approach. As a result, a range of new context and location-aware pervasive computing applications will be enabled. A heterogeneous network environment is typically composed of terminals with different capacities such as sensors, actuators, mobile devices (PDAs and mobile phones), and Internet hosts. Seamlessly integration of these terminals requires innovative network architectures, data services, and communication protocols. In urban environments, mobile phones can be used as sensors to collect image, audio, video and location information. New business models and incentives should be sought to allow mobile phone users to participate in the creation and provision of sensor based services. 1st Workshop on Urban Networks and Applications (UNA ’08) Lakeshore Hotel, Hsinchu, Taiwan, August 4-6, 2008 http://una.cs.ucc.ie held in conjunction with the 13th IEEE Asia-Pacific Computer Systems Architecture Conference http://www.ccrc.nthu.edu.tw/acsac2008 Urban settings are host of diverse networking technologies, from cellular and wired broadband to WiMAX, WiFi, Bluetooth and, more recently, mesh and sensor networks. While this rich environment offers opportunities for connectivity, inter-operability and sharing of services and resources, the co-existence of these heterogeneous technologies, competing for the same resources and offering similar services, poses difficult engineering and legal problems. For example, network planning is a major issue that can determine the effective use of each network and, when possible, inter-operability of the networks. Cities administrations are keen to deploy and take advantage of public service networks, whereas citizens are interested to use public or private services at home, at work or while driving or walking. Private initiatives may selectively focus on certain niche services. Overall, urban networks can increase the quality of life in cities and can make the distinction among cities. In achieving this goal, many technical challenges have to be tackled. This workshop will be a forum for discussion of new and interdisciplinary ideas on new architectures, paradigms, concepts, service models and novel applications for urban networks. Submitted papers should be original, unpublished work and not currently under review for any other conference or journal. Papers reporting work in progress are welcome. Accepted papers will appear in the Proceedings of ACSAC 2008, which is to be published by the IEEE Computer Society Press. This trend has forced the network and service providers to understand the limitations of current Internet and bring new technologies for delivering the video content to the end-user. Furthermore, criticality of the wireless networks pose new challenges in video delivery specific to the diverse set of underlying network technologies including Wi-Fi, WiMax etc. The focus of this workshop is to present and discuss recent advances in the wireless network technologies and video delivery mechanisms for supporting the broad spectrum of emerging video-centric applications. The workshop will have the goal of understanding the research and deployment challenges in building the Next Generation Mobile Video Internet. Specifically, the workshop intends to address the following topics: a) Research challenges in developing new methods for delivering rich video experience to users over existing wireless technologies; b) New visions and concepts that will drive evolution of wireless access technologies to support high definition video content with diverse QoS requirements; c) Deployment challenges in new video delivery models (broadcast/multicast) to mobile users. The workshop aims to foster interaction among researchers and exchange new ideas by bringing together members of the video and networking communities. The workshop will provide an interesting venue to discuss widely varying beliefs and understanding being formed among the academic and industrial communities in terms of how next generation mobile video content should delivered to end-users. This forms a framework on harmonization of results obtained separately in different areas of network research like network performance evaluation, architecture and protocol design, and low layer network design.
