Doktorandenseminar auf der Tagung Mensch und Computer 2008 ========================================================== Ziel der von der Fachgruppe CSCW veranstalteten Doktorandenseminare ist es, Doktoranden, die in verschiedenen Fachgebieten an computerunterstützter Kollaboration arbeiten, eine Möglichkeit zum Austausch zu geben. Das CSCW-Doktorandenseminar 2008 ist als "Doctoral Consortium" der gesamten Tagung Mensch und Computer 2008 (http://www.vielmehr.org/muc/) ausgerichtet. Es sind also Bewerber zu allen Themenbereichen der Tagung eingeladen. Neben den Doktoranden nehmen an der Veranstaltung erfahrene Wissenschaftler und Praktiker aus dem Bereich "Mensch und Computer" teil. Das Doktorandenseminar wird von Prof. Dr. Stephan Lukosch (FernUniversität in Hagen) organisiert. Als Moderatoren für das Seminar agieren in diesem Jahr: * Prof. Dr. Jörg Haake (FernUniversität in Hagen) * Prof. Wolfgang Prinz, PhD (RWTH Aachen und Fraunhofer FIT) * Prof. Dr. Jürgen Ziegler (Universität Duisburg-Essen) Teilnehmer / Bewerbung ====================== Interessierte Teilnehmer arbeiten gerade an einer Dissertation im Themenbereich der Tagung "Mensch und Computer" oder haben eine solche gerade abgeschlossen. Da die Anzahl der Teilnehmer für das Doktorandenseminar beschränkt ist, sollen interessierte Teilnehmer bis zum 08. Juli 2008 einen Kurzbeitrag zu ihrer Dissertation (Motivation, Problemstellung, Lösungsweg, (Zwischen-)Ergebnisse) auf maximal vier Seiten (Formatvorlage der Mensch-und-Computer-Konferenz, http://www.vielmehr.org/muc/downloads/Autorenrichtlinien_mc2008.dot) einreichen. Die Kurzbeiträge sollen als Microsoft Word oder PDF Dokument per E-Mail an Stephan Lukosch (stephan.lukosch(a)fernuni-hagen.de) gesendet werden. Aus den eingereichten Beiträgen wählt das Moderatoren- und Organisationsteam dann die Teilnehmer aus (Benachrichtigung bis spätestens zum 22. With cooperation at all layers of the protocol stack, the wireless network can achieve higher throughput, higher system reliability, higher energy efficiency, lower bit-error rate, and smaller packet loss rate. A variety of research in recent years have actively focused on design, simulation, modeling, and applying cooperative communications in wireless ad hoc, mesh, and sensor networks, etc. International standards organizations have been initialized various activities to apply cooperation mechanisms in the wireless LAN, PAN and MAN. For instance, the IEEE 802.16j working group is actively calling for contributions for relay metropolitan networks. The idea of cooperative wireless communications and networking can be tracked back to the work of the theoretic properties of relay channels. By sharing antennas in a multi-user environment, single-antenna wireless devices enable a virtual multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system that allows them to achieve transmit diversity, and hence obtain advantages of MIMO with reduced size, cost, and complexity of the hardware/software. Upon cooperation at physical, MAC, network, and application layer, various cooperative signaling methods are widely explored and many new mechanisms are under development with respects to routing, medium access, location management, scheduling, energy management, and so on. This workshop intends to bring together researchers, engineers, and students to present new results, describe work in progress, and explore relationships among their diverse approaches. Different type of semantic characteristics of media, human interpretation of audiovisual information, coding standards and interaction with networking, mobility and security protocols are research issues that need to be carefully examined when proposing new solutions. The efficient delivery and deployment of multimedia applications and services over emerging diverse and heterogeneous wireless networks is a challenging research objective. The demand for efficient multimedia communications can be also seen as one of main driving forces towards the Future Internet and Post-IP solutions. The interoperability of applications, transport and network protocols and radio access, as well as the demand for improved quality of service and user experience, security and mobility support creates a challenging study field and also possibilities for research of novel communication protocols and methods towards the Future Internet. In addition for the technical challenges caused by the increased amount of multimedia usage and delivery through different community services, peer-to-peer networks, Web, Internet IPTV etc. the multimedia delivery is also affecting to industry value chains, commerce transactions between businesses (B2B), and business and customers (B2C). Within this scope, MobiMedia is intended to provide a unique international forum for researchers from industry and academia, working in multimedia coding and mobile networking fields to study new applications, solutions, and standards. Original unpublished contributions are solicited that can improve the knowledge and practice in the integrated design of efficient technologies and the relevant provision of advanced mobile multimedia applications. Distributed systems based on networked sensors and actuators with embedded computation capabilities enable an instrumentation of the physical world at an unprecedented scale and density, thus enabling a new generation of monitoring and control applications. This conference provides an ideal venue to address the research challenges facing the design, deployment, use, and fundamental limits of these systems. Sensor networks require contributions from many fields, from wireless communication and networking, embedded systems and hardware, distributed systems, data management, and applications, so we welcome cross-disciplinary work. We particularly encourage papers that extend the scope of the conference beyond wireless mote-class sensor networks and we seek contributions from a broad range of sensing-related fields, such as actuator networks, RFID applications, mobile ad-hoc networks, camera networks, and others. We seek technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research results. These basic interactions are not sufficient for complex tasks. There is a rising demand for middleware support for multiple cross-cutting features such as security, fault tolerance, and distributed resource management. In adaptive systems, the middleware has to exert control on applications, and vice versa. Middleware systems need the right access to applications running on top; applications need the right way for influencing middleware behaviour. Unlike the basic interaction mechanisms, such complex features are currently addressed by a highly heterogeneous set of methods such as aspect-oriented programming, reflection, code annotations, and policies. *Goals and Contributions* MAI'2008 aims at providing researchers with a forum for discussing the state of the art of approaches to middleware-application interaction and for identifying challenging open problems. The goal of the workshop is to bring together active researchers in the different fields that relate to the workshop topic. Our ambition is to foster discussions between participants with different background and experience, and to provide the participants with a broader view of the problems and established approaches. We believe that the workshop will yield new ideas for future system research in the area of middleware platforms, and will nourish the exchange of ideas and strengthen the cooperation between interested scientists. *Workshop Format* The workshop will be organised as a series of sessions, each session being devoted to the presentation of papers of a common domain. At the end of each session, we will have a mini-panel with the presenters on the session theme, led by the session chair, in order to foster discussions. [Apologies for possible multiple copies] ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Issue of Pervasive and Mobile Computing Journal on Context Modelling, Reasoning and Management ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Context-awareness plays an important role in pervasive and mobile computing and therefore context information modelling, reasoning and management have been studied for a number of years. Pervasive computing conferences and in particular dedicated workshops (i.e., the CoMoRea?2003-2008 workshops at PerCom and the Ubicomp workshops) are attracting a large number of papers related to context modelling, reasoning and management and influence the direction of research in this area. There is already a consensus in the research community that formal modelling of context information and appropriate reasoning and management techniques are needed. However, many research issues in this field are still open, including heterogeneity of context information, imperfection of context information, complex mapping between raw context data (e.g., sensor readings) and abstract context information required by applications, privacy of context information, limitations and efficiency of reasoning techniques, and difficulties of managing and provisioning context information in systems where mobility and disconnections are common. The purpose of this special issue is to present the state-of-the-art in context information modelling, reasoning and management. The special issue will include a collection of papers that discuss concepts, theories and methods applicable to context modelling and reasoning, as well as system-oriented issues related to the design and implementation of context-aware systems. Prospective authors are invited to submit manuscripts containing original research. Topics of interests include, but are not limited to: * Context information modelling techniques, * Domain-specific models of context information, * Hybrid models of context information (integration of various modelling techniques), * Context information reasoning algorithms, their complexity and accuracy, * Discovery and reuse of context information, * Privacy of context information, * Distributed and scalable context information management, * Context model driven application design. Manuscripts must not have been previously published or currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. The manuscript should be at least 1.5 spaced and must not exceed 35 pages (all inclusive.) If the paper has been published in a conference, the submitted version should be a significantly enhanced version. Authors are requested to submit their published conference articles and a summary document explaining the enhancements made in the journal version. The manuscript preparation guidelines can be obtained from the PMC Journal's web page (<http://www.elsevier.com/locate/pmc>). The deadline for submitting manuscripts is February 1, 2008 and authors will be notified of the decision by June 15, 2008. The final manuscripts will be due Dec 1, 2008. This trend has forced the network and service providers to understand the limitations of current Internet and bring new technologies for delivering the video content to the end-user. Furthermore, criticality of the wireless networks pose new challenges in video delivery specific to the diverse set of underlying network technologies including Wi-Fi, WiMax etc. The focus of this workshop is to present and discuss recent advances in the wireless network technologies and video delivery mechanisms for supporting the broad spectrum of emerging video-centric applications. The workshop will have the goal of understanding the research and deployment challenges in building the Next Generation Mobile Video Internet. However, it is still unclear whether current solutions can satisfy the challenging adapta- bility and dependability requirements of the emerging mobile ubiquitous services, such as mobile commerce, wireless control of robots, healthcare computing, and video-surveillance. Hence, it is becoming increasingly important: to devise con- ceptual models and paradigms for change tolerance; to propose mechanisms to model, design, and develop adaptive and dependable systems; to provide analytical and simulation tools to measure system ability to withstand faults and to optimally re-adjust to new environments; to develop scalable, maintainable, cost- effective middleware infrastructures able to support and ease the development of adaptive and dependable mobile ubiquitous services. Building on the success of the last year event, this workshop aims at fostering exchange of ideas and lively discussions in order to reduce the gap between research achievements and industrial applications in the field of adaptive and dependable mobile ubiquitous systems. Researchers and practitioners are encouraged to participate with high quality papers able to identify open issues, to discuss the limits and/or advantages of existing solutions, or to propose original and innovative techniques for adaptive and dependable applications over mobile environments. Live demon- strations must be accompanied by a short demo proposal descri- bing the demo and the related research activity. * Full papers must be written in English and should not exceed 6 pages in IEEE proceedings style. * Demo proposals must be written in English and should not exce- ed 3 pages in IEEE proceedings style. * Demo Plans: Authors of all accepted demo proposals must also submit a Demo Plan including a short description of the demo (text, video, poster) and a short report on infra- structure needs (power, network, physical space needed). Best regards ------------- CALL FOR PAPERS IEEE Wireless Communication Magazine Feature Topic on Enterprise Mobility Services Enterprise market constitutes a very large share of the ICT sector. Normal market segmentation differentiates between big corporations for which tailored solutions can be offered and SMEs, businesses and professionals, for which generic solutions are designed, taking into account the so called long tail effect. In the ICT era of the 21st century, mobile services have a promising outlook. Companies are no longer static, premises based. On the contrary they have full mobility needs, with global customers that can be based worldwide, a growing number of remote offices that need to be interconnected, teleworkers that work from home, employees that are always travelling, longer times out of office, etc. On the other hand mobile technologies have evolved significantly over the last years improving the performance offered to users: mobile broadband thanks to 3.5G and beyond with growing coverage for several Mbps bandwidth; more powerful mobile handsets that support more complex applications and offer better user interfaces including larger screens and new features like embedded GPS, NFC,&; a massive penetration of mobile data telephony specially in the enterprise; smaller and lighter laptops at decreasing prices; maturity of IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) for telco grade IP communications, etc. Given this starting point where workers have permanent access to email in the mobile, and full remote desktop connectivity with laptops and VPNs in this special issue we will go beyond with current research activities related to future enterprise mobility with a total focus on services and applications. Among the different existing vertical enterprise markets special attention will be given to wireless eHealth applications. Wiley Journal: Security and Communication Network (SCN) Call for Paper Special Issue: Secure Multimedia Communication http://home.simula.no/~yanzhang/cfp/SCN-SIcfp.html Background ========== With the rapid progress in information technology and an enormous amount of media appearing over Internet, e.g. text, audio, speech, music, image and video, guaranteeing information security is becoming increasingly important. Several pivotal challenges include copyright protection, integrity verification, authentication, and access control etc. As a consequence, the subject of security protection in multimedia communication has attracted intensive research activities in academia, industry and also government. Multimedia data like images, audios or videos are different from plain text. They are often of large volumes and are compressed in order to save the storage cost and bandwidth. Due to such requirement and property, the media protection mechanisms for images, audios or videos are significantly different from the ones for text or binary data. With the recent advances in network and multimedia technology, the applications in commercial scenario become increasing crucial. There is an increasing trend in the multimedia content distribution from the central service provider to the individuals, e.g. video-on-demand, IPTV and p2p sharing. In these applications, piracy is becoming a critical issue. Solutions are needed to protect the copyright of multimedia content. During the past decades, schemes have been reported for secure multimedia communication, e.g., key management, multimedia encryption, authentication, digital watermarking, digital fingerprinting, access control and digital rights management. These techniques are able to protect multimedia content's confidentiality, integrity, ownership, traitor traceability. In addition, in different networks such as Internet, 3G wireless, DVB-H and p2p, different secure protocols and algorithms are required to provide the system security. All these topics are in active development. This special issue aims to expose the readership of SCN to the latest research results on secure multimedia communication. The issue focuses on secure transmission or distribution of multimedia content. The REALWSN'08 Workshop on Real-World Wireless Sensor Networks http://www.sics.se/realwsn08/ April 1, 2008 Glasgow, Scotland In conjunction with ACM EuroSys 2008 The purpose of the third Workshop on Real-World Wireless Sensor Networks is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the area of sensor networks, with focus on real-world experiments or deployments of wireless sensor networks. When working with real-world experiments or deployments, many new issues arise: the network environment may be composed of a variety of different technologies, leading to very heterogeneous network structures; software development for large scale networks poses new types of problems; prototype networks may differ significantly from the deployed system; actual sensor network deployments may need a complex combination of autonomous and manual configuration. Furthermore, results obtained through simulation are typically not directly applicable to operational networks and it is therefore imperative for the community to produce results from experimental research. Authors are invited to submit papers (5 pages, double column) for presentation at the workshop. Papers will be selected based on originality, technical merit and relevance. Now that some of the fundamental issues and challenges of ad hoc networking have been clearly assessed, the focus is partially shifting to new issues, which include application scenarios (road safety, disaster recovery, sensors and actuators, etc.), autonomous organization and operation, optimization and control, service creation and support, middleware. Moreover, wireless MESH networking is emerging as an "ad hoc spin-off" aimed at extending and integrating the multi-hop paradigm with more traditional networking, which poses new and exciting technical challenges. Med-Hoc-Net 2008 is the major annual international workshop aiming to serve as a platform for researchers and visionaries from academia, research labs, and industry from all over the world. Sharing ideas, views, results, and experiences in the field of wireless multi-hop networking is what Med-Hoc-Net 2008 intends to be about. Anything from theoretical and experimental achievements, to innovative ad hoc systems, prototyping efforts, and case studies is of interest to the Med-Hoc-Net community. NAEC conferences bring together academic and industrial researchers from various fields to discuss developments and challenges of networking and electronic business. Through the use of mobile devices embedded in the surrounding physical environment, users can be provided with transparent computing and communication services at all times and in all places. The complexity of providing such services stems from the fact that the communication devices and the objects with which they interact may both be mobile. Their implementation requires advances in wireless network technologies and devices, development of infrastructures supporting cognitive environments, discovery and identification of ubiquitous computing applications and services, and an understanding of the cross-layer interactions between all of these components. The Fifth Annual International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Computing, Networking and Services (MobiQuitous 2008) will provide a forum where practitioners and researchers coming from many areas involved in ubiquitous solutions design and deployment will be able to interact and exchange experiences needed to build successful ubiquitous systems. Areas addressed by the conference include systems, applications, service-oriented computing, middleware, networking, agents, data management and services, all with special focus on mobility and ubiquitous computing. TOPICS OF INTEREST Technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research, not currently under review by another conference or journal, are solicited. Technical papers clearly identifying how the specific contributions fit to an overall working system are particularly of interest. CALL FOR PAPERS The 1st International Workshop on Massively Multiuser Virtual Environments (MMVE 2008) at IEEE Virtual Reality 2008 http://peers-at-play.org/MMVE08/ March 8th, 2008 Reno, Nevada, USA With the increasing number of potential users of virtual and augmented reality systems, as indicated by the recent booms of massively multiuser online societies, the design of distributed, massively multiuser virtual environments (MMVEs) becomes increasingly important, posing new requirements on both distribution platforms and virtual reality systems. Facing these challenges is a community-spanning effort, necessitating the pooling of the resources and experiences of the virtual reality and the networking/ distributed computing communities. This workshop hopes to provide a link between these communities to foster the development of highly distributed, flexible and robust virtual environments. We aim to gather the practitioners and researchers in these fields under one roof to discuss their findings, incite collaborations, and move the state of the art forward. Keynote by Jon Watte (CTO, Forterra Systems) Jon Watte will give a keynote at the workshop, in which he'll describe some surprising places virtual worlds have been adopted; what the future looks like; and some sketches for open research areas. In addition to his job as CTO of serious virtual world platform company Forterra Systems, Jon is a regular contributor to the independent game development community. A Microsoft DirectX/XNA MVP and moderator of the Multiplayer and Networking forum on independent games site GameDev.Net, Jon has several published articles in the field and has spoken on the future direction of the interoperable 3D web on several occasions. He combines practical experience with solid theoretical underpinnings to bring success to the field of massive-scale, interactive distributed simulation. Prior to heading up Forterra Systems, Jon worked on products such as There.com, BeOS, and Metrowerks CodeWarrior. IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications CALL FOR PAPERS Wireless and Pervasive Communications for Healthcare Wireless and Pervasive Communications for Healthcare, a new and growing interdisciplinary field, calls for innovation in information and communications technology to facilitate reliable, comprehensive, and high quality heathcare. Advances in networking infrastructure as well as middleware are vital to delivering telemedicine services regardless of a patient's physical location. In-home care for elderly persons is costly and can require sensors, wireless monitoring devices, and networking infrastructure and middleware to automatically contact emergency services. Healthcare is motivating unique basic research challenges in wireless and pervasive communications due to requirements for safe signal propagation characteristics, low network latency, low packet loss, high quality image and video transmission, and the need for safe, secure, and dependable operation. The goal of this issue is to report on cutting-edge research in communications for healthcare. Basic research papers are solicited, but papers on systems integration or deployment will also be considered. We seek papers that describe original and unpublished contributions, and that reflect those aspects of communications research for healthcare which are distinctly different from communications research in general. Based on short- and medium-range communication as well as on cellular systems, vehicular inter-networking will enable vehicular safety applications (including collision and other safety warnings) as well as non-safety applications (like real-time traffic congestion and routing information, high-speed tolling, mobile infotainment, and many others). The creation of high-performance, highly reliable, highly scalable, secure, and privacy-preserving VANET technologies presents an extraordinary challenge for the wireless research community. A high degree of communication reliability is needed under unfavorable conditions. Clearly, the specificity of vehicular inter-networking in terms of mobility behavior, applications scenarios, and application requirements makes VANET research an exciting and demanding application- and purpose-driven sub-discipline of wireless networking. Furthermore, VANET present a very active field of research, development, standardization, and field trials. Throughout the world, there are many national and international projects in government, industry, and academia devoted to VANET. These include consortia like Vehicle Safety Consortium (US), Car-2-Car Communication Consortium (Europe), and Advanced Safety Vehicle Program (Japan), standardization efforts like IEEE 802.11p (WAVE), and field trials like the large-scale Vehicle Infrastructure Integration Program (VII) in the US. Following the successes of VANET 2004 held in Philadelphia, VANET 2005 held in Cologne, Germany, VANET 2006 in Los Angeles, CA, and VANET 2007 in Montréal, QC, Canada, the Fifth ACM International Workshop on Vehicular Inter-Networking (VANET) will be held in San Francisco, CA in conjunction with MobiCom 2008. Authors are invited to submit papers presenting new research related to the theory or practice of vehicular inter-networking (VANET). All submissions must describe original research, not published or currently under review for another workshop, conference, or journal. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: - Channel modeling - Modulation and coding - Power control and scalability issues - Medium access control protocols - Multi-channel organization and operation - Communication protocol design - Safety and non-safety applications - Vehicle-to-vehicle/roadside/Internet communication - Simulation frameworks - Field operational testing - Network management - Security issues and countermeasures - Privacy issues Submission Instructions All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Papers must be in PDF format, no longer than 10 pages (single- or double-column), in font no smaller than 11 points, and must fit properly on US Letter-sized paper (8.5 inch x 11 inch) with reasonable margins. Submitted papers will be judged based on their quality through a double-blind review process, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers. Poster descriptions of no more than 3 pages (US letter size 8.5 x 11 inches) using font size 10 should be submitted to the Poster Chair Mihaela Cardei (mihaela(a)cse.fau.edu).
