This trend has forced the network and service providers to understand the limitations of current Internet and bring new technologies for delivering the video content to the end-user. Furthermore, criticality of the wireless networks pose new challenges in video delivery specific to the diverse set of underlying network technologies including Wi-Fi, WiMax etc. The focus of this workshop is to present and discuss recent advances in the wireless network technologies and video delivery mechanisms for supporting the broad spectrum of emerging video-centric applications. The workshop will have the goal of understanding the research and deployment challenges in building the Next Generation Mobile Video Internet. Specifically, the workshop intends to address the following topics: a) Research challenges in developing new methods for delivering rich video experience to users over existing wireless technologies; b) New visions and concepts that will drive evolution of wireless access technologies to support high definition video content with diverse QoS requirements; c) Deployment challenges in new video delivery models (broadcast/multicast) to mobile users. The workshop aims to foster interaction among researchers and exchange new ideas by bringing together members of the video and networking communities. The workshop will provide an interesting venue to discuss widely varying beliefs and understanding being formed among the academic and industrial communities in terms of how next generation mobile video content should delivered to end-users. Med-Hoc-Net 2008 is the major annual international workshop aiming to serve as a platform for researchers and visionaries from academia, research labs, and industry from all over the world. Sharing ideas, views, results, and experiences in the field of wireless multi-hop networking is what Med-Hoc-Net 2008 intends to be about. Anything from theoretical and experimental achievements, to innovative ad hoc systems, prototyping efforts, and case studies is of interest to the Med-Hoc-Net community. The papers solicited in Med-Hoc-Net 2008 cover a variety of topics related to ad hoc and MESH networks, including but not limited to: - Novel multi-hop wireless network architectures - Routing algorithms and protocols - MAC protocols, scheduling, power control and radio resource sharing - Transport layer protocols for multi-hop networks - Middleware for ad hoc networks - Application driven architectures and protocols - Sensor network applications and protocols - Vehicular networks - Integration of ad hoc networks with wireless access networks - Implementations, testbeds, and prototypes - Technology related issues (IEEE 802.11, Bluetooth, ZigBee, IEEE 802.16, IEEE 802.20, etc.) - Self organization and network reconfiguration - Optimization models and algorithms - Resource and service discovery - Call admission and traffic shaping policies for ad-hoc networks - Use of advanced antenna technologies (MIMO, beam forming, etc.) - QoS support - Security and privacy The members of program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings by Springer Science-Business Media (SSBM) in LNCS or IFIP Series. Typical application domains for MCN include critical infrastructure protection, emergency and crisis intervention, and military operations. Such networking is essential for safety, security and economic vitality in our complex world characterized by uncertainty, heterogeneity and emergent behaviors. MCN should comprise the best possible networking technology, infrastructure and services that may alleviate the risk and help save the lives of both the general public and the network users. As advances in pervasive computing, wireless communication, ad hoc and mesh networking and networked sensor systems continue, more opportunities are being opened to mission-critical networks to benefit from these technologies. A primary challenge to the operations of mission-critical networks is to deploy a communication network that is dependable, autonomic, secure, and rapidly deployable. In order to operate effectively, the deployed networks should support services such as location determination of authorized and unauthorized entities, audio and video communication, secure emergency calling and alerting, and in-situ and remote sensing and control in a secure and dependable manner. In addition, efficient operation of such networks that typically include numerous resource-constrained components may benefit from cross-layer optimization, cognition, resource engineering, visual analytics, and service-oriented architecture. Another key feature for mission-critical networking is to support interactions among multiple heterogeneous networks. This workshop solicits high quality technical contributions to the area of mission-critical networking. The manuscript must explicitly address relevance to MCN. Moreover, there are also other types of middleboxes, such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) gateways, Application Layer Gateways (ALG), Performance Enhancing Proxies (PEP) and web proxies. These intermediary boxes perform functions different from normal IP packet treatment, which can even change the content of packets or do rerouting of IP packets. There have been diverse views on the value of middleboxes. Some believe that middleboxes introduce problems for network applications as well as challenges to the traditional end-to-end Internet architecture. These issues range, for instance, but not limited to, from naming and addressing of nodes behind NATs, directionality of communication establishment, and performance impairments. On the other hand, many administrators and operators see the middleboxes represent an important part for their network operations. For example, firewalls are widely deployed with the intention of securing enterprise, campus and home networks, so as to block attacks to nodes or keep nodes from sending malicious traffic. The Internet community has acknowledged the emergence of the middleboxes and developed middlebox control and coordination protocols that allow end hosts (or application proxies) to learn about the presence of middleboxes and communicate their needs (i.e. required packet treatment) to those devices. A number of middlebox control protocols, such as UPnP, MIDCOM and STUN, have been developed over the years and are partially used in current deployments. The papers in this special issue will focus on the state-of-the-art research in various aspects of middleboxes and middlebox control mechanisms, which help to understand their impact to the Internet architecture and network operations, and how they can be further integrated, or leveraged for different purposes, such as load balancing and mobile network environments, among the others. Peer-to-Peer systems benefit from and share the resources owned by systems that are distributed around the Internet. Examples of such technologies include peer-to-peer applications and grids, and in general, any large-scale distributed system characterized by decentralization and sharing of resources. Recently, interesting applications of P2P technology have begun to emerge, together with new platforms for application development. We invite papers that reflect experience with practical applications of the current state of the art, or that explore new application areas. We are particularly interested in real, large-scale, deployed systems and applications, rather than small-scale examples composed of a few nodes. The key issues to be considered are scalability, robustness, and security; we believe that these aspects are fundamental issues that must be solved before Peer-to-Peer and Grid services will become mainstream. Consistent with the previous occurrences of this conference, we would like to promote collaboration in research among academic institutions, government organizations, and business enterprises that are concerned with the research and implementation of peer-to-peer networks, grids, and large scale distributed systems. TOPICS Topics that relate to Peer-to-Peer systems, Peer-to-Peer applications, Grid systems, large-scale distributed systems, and overlay networks are open for consideration. We would like to give special encouragement to experience reports with applications, with particular emphasis to those that treat problems related to scalability, robustness and security. With cooperation at all layers of the protocol stack, the wireless network can achieve higher throughput, higher system reliability, higher energy efficiency, lower bit-error rate, and smaller packet loss rate. A variety of research in recent years have actively focused on design, simulation, modeling, and applying cooperative communications in wireless ad hoc, mesh, and sensor networks, etc. International standards organizations have been initialized various activities to apply cooperation mechanisms in the wireless LAN, PAN and MAN. For instance, the IEEE 802.16j working group is actively calling for contributions for relay metropolitan networks. The idea of cooperative wireless communications and networking can be tracked back to the work of the theoretic properties of relay channels. By sharing antennas in a multi-user environment, single-antenna wireless devices enable a virtual multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system that allows them to achieve transmit diversity, and hence obtain advantages of MIMO with reduced size, cost, and complexity of the hardware/software. Upon cooperation at physical, MAC, network, and application layer, various cooperative signaling methods are widely explored and many new mechanisms are under development with respects to routing, medium access, location management, scheduling, energy management, and so on. This workshop intends to bring together researchers, engineers, and students to present new results, describe work in progress, and explore relationships among their diverse approaches. The interoperability of applications, transport and network protocols and radio access, as well as the demand for improved quality of service and user experience, security and mobility support creates a challenging study field and also possibilities for research of novel communication protocols and methods towards the Future Internet. In addition for the technical challenges caused by the increased amount of multimedia usage and delivery through different community services, peer-to-peer networks, Web, Internet IPTV etc. the multimedia delivery is also affecting to industry value chains, commerce transactions between businesses (B2B), and business and customers (B2C). Within this scope, MobiMedia is intended to provide a unique international forum for researchers from industry and academia, working in multimedia coding and mobile networking fields to study new applications, solutions, and standards. Original unpublished contributions are solicited that can improve the knowledge and practice in the integrated design of efficient technologies and the relevant provision of advanced mobile multimedia applications. These basic interactions are not sufficient for complex tasks. There is a rising demand for middleware support for multiple cross-cutting features such as security, fault tolerance, and distributed resource management. In adaptive systems, the middleware has to exert control on applications, and vice versa. Middleware systems need the right access to applications running on top; applications need the right way for influencing middleware behaviour. Unlike the basic interaction mechanisms, such complex features are currently addressed by a highly heterogeneous set of methods such as aspect-oriented programming, reflection, code annotations, and policies. *Goals and Contributions* MAI'2008 aims at providing researchers with a forum for discussing the state of the art of approaches to middleware-application interaction and for identifying challenging open problems. The goal of the workshop is to bring together active researchers in the different fields that relate to the workshop topic. Our ambition is to foster discussions between participants with different background and experience, and to provide the participants with a broader view of the problems and established approaches. We believe that the workshop will yield new ideas for future system research in the area of middleware platforms, and will nourish the exchange of ideas and strengthen the cooperation between interested scientists. *Workshop Format* The workshop will be organised as a series of sessions, each session being devoted to the presentation of papers of a common domain. At the end of each session, we will have a mini-panel with the presenters on the session theme, led by the session chair, in order to foster discussions. [Apologies for possible multiple copies] ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Special Issue of Pervasive and Mobile Computing Journal on Context Modelling, Reasoning and Management ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Context-awareness plays an important role in pervasive and mobile computing and therefore context information modelling, reasoning and management have been studied for a number of years. Pervasive computing conferences and in particular dedicated workshops (i.e., the CoMoRea?2003-2008 workshops at PerCom and the Ubicomp workshops) are attracting a large number of papers related to context modelling, reasoning and management and influence the direction of research in this area. There is already a consensus in the research community that formal modelling of context information and appropriate reasoning and management techniques are needed. However, many research issues in this field are still open, including heterogeneity of context information, imperfection of context information, complex mapping between raw context data (e.g., sensor readings) and abstract context information required by applications, privacy of context information, limitations and efficiency of reasoning techniques, and difficulties of managing and provisioning context information in systems where mobility and disconnections are common. The purpose of this special issue is to present the state-of-the-art in context information modelling, reasoning and management. The special issue will include a collection of papers that discuss concepts, theories and methods applicable to context modelling and reasoning, as well as system-oriented issues related to the design and implementation of context-aware systems. Prospective authors are invited to submit manuscripts containing original research. Topics of interests include, but are not limited to: * Context information modelling techniques, * Domain-specific models of context information, * Hybrid models of context information (integration of various modelling techniques), * Context information reasoning algorithms, their complexity and accuracy, * Discovery and reuse of context information, * Privacy of context information, * Distributed and scalable context information management, * Context model driven application design. Manuscripts must not have been previously published or currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. The manuscript should be at least 1.5 spaced and must not exceed 35 pages (all inclusive.) If the paper has been published in a conference, the submitted version should be a significantly enhanced version. Authors are requested to submit their published conference articles and a summary document explaining the enhancements made in the journal version. The manuscript preparation guidelines can be obtained from the PMC Journal's web page (<http://www.elsevier.com/locate/pmc>). The deadline for submitting manuscripts is February 1, 2008 and authors will be notified of the decision by June 15, 2008. The final manuscripts will be due Dec 1, 2008. Furthermore, criticality of the wireless networks pose new challenges in video delivery specific to the diverse set of underlying network technologies including Wi-Fi, WiMax etc. The focus of this workshop is to present and discuss recent advances in the wireless network technologies and video delivery mechanisms for supporting the broad spectrum of emerging video-centric applications. The workshop will have the goal of understanding the research and deployment challenges in building the Next Generation Mobile Video Internet. Specifically, the workshop intends to address the following topics: a) Research challenges in developing new methods for delivering rich video experience to users over existing wireless technologies; b) New visions and concepts that will drive evolution of wireless access technologies to support high definition video content with diverse QoS requirements; c) Deployment challenges in new video delivery models (broadcast/multicast) to mobile users. Hence, it is becoming increasingly important: to devise con- ceptual models and paradigms for change tolerance; to propose mechanisms to model, design, and develop adaptive and dependable systems; to provide analytical and simulation tools to measure system ability to withstand faults and to optimally re-adjust to new environments; to develop scalable, maintainable, cost- effective middleware infrastructures able to support and ease the development of adaptive and dependable mobile ubiquitous services. Building on the success of the last year event, this workshop aims at fostering exchange of ideas and lively discussions in order to reduce the gap between research achievements and industrial applications in the field of adaptive and dependable mobile ubiquitous systems. Best regards ------------- CALL FOR PAPERS IEEE Wireless Communication Magazine Feature Topic on Enterprise Mobility Services Enterprise market constitutes a very large share of the ICT sector. Normal market segmentation differentiates between big corporations for which tailored solutions can be offered and SMEs, businesses and professionals, for which generic solutions are designed, taking into account the so called long tail effect. In the ICT era of the 21st century, mobile services have a promising outlook. Companies are no longer static, premises based. On the contrary they have full mobility needs, with global customers that can be based worldwide, a growing number of remote offices that need to be interconnected, teleworkers that work from home, employees that are always travelling, longer times out of office, etc. On the other hand mobile technologies have evolved significantly over the last years improving the performance offered to users: mobile broadband thanks to 3.5G and beyond with growing coverage for several Mbps bandwidth; more powerful mobile handsets that support more complex applications and offer better user interfaces including larger screens and new features like embedded GPS, NFC,&; a massive penetration of mobile data telephony specially in the enterprise; smaller and lighter laptops at decreasing prices; maturity of IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) for telco grade IP communications, etc. Given this starting point where workers have permanent access to email in the mobile, and full remote desktop connectivity with laptops and VPNs in this special issue we will go beyond with current research activities related to future enterprise mobility with a total focus on services and applications. Among the different existing vertical enterprise markets special attention will be given to wireless eHealth applications. Wiley Journal: Security and Communication Network (SCN) Call for Paper Special Issue: Secure Multimedia Communication http://home.simula.no/~yanzhang/cfp/SCN-SIcfp.html Background ========== With the rapid progress in information technology and an enormous amount of media appearing over Internet, e.g. text, audio, speech, music, image and video, guaranteeing information security is becoming increasingly important. Several pivotal challenges include copyright protection, integrity verification, authentication, and access control etc. As a consequence, the subject of security protection in multimedia communication has attracted intensive research activities in academia, industry and also government. Multimedia data like images, audios or videos are different from plain text. They are often of large volumes and are compressed in order to save the storage cost and bandwidth. Due to such requirement and property, the media protection mechanisms for images, audios or videos are significantly different from the ones for text or binary data. With the recent advances in network and multimedia technology, the applications in commercial scenario become increasing crucial. There is an increasing trend in the multimedia content distribution from the central service provider to the individuals, e.g. video-on-demand, IPTV and p2p sharing. In these applications, piracy is becoming a critical issue. Solutions are needed to protect the copyright of multimedia content. During the past decades, schemes have been reported for secure multimedia communication, e.g., key management, multimedia encryption, authentication, digital watermarking, digital fingerprinting, access control and digital rights management. These techniques are able to protect multimedia content's confidentiality, integrity, ownership, traitor traceability. In addition, in different networks such as Internet, 3G wireless, DVB-H and p2p, different secure protocols and algorithms are required to provide the system security. All these topics are in active development. This special issue aims to expose the readership of SCN to the latest research results on secure multimedia communication. The issue focuses on secure transmission or distribution of multimedia content. The REALWSN'08 Workshop on Real-World Wireless Sensor Networks http://www.sics.se/realwsn08/ April 1, 2008 Glasgow, Scotland In conjunction with ACM EuroSys 2008 The purpose of the third Workshop on Real-World Wireless Sensor Networks is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the area of sensor networks, with focus on real-world experiments or deployments of wireless sensor networks. When working with real-world experiments or deployments, many new issues arise: the network environment may be composed of a variety of different technologies, leading to very heterogeneous network structures; software development for large scale networks poses new types of problems; prototype networks may differ significantly from the deployed system; actual sensor network deployments may need a complex combination of autonomous and manual configuration. Furthermore, results obtained through simulation are typically not directly applicable to operational networks and it is therefore imperative for the community to produce results from experimental research. Mobile and pervasive environments have turned out to be a promising application area for proactive systems, as environmental data is used to provide users with appropriate resources, information, and services. Now that some of the fundamental issues and challenges of ad hoc networking have been clearly assessed, the focus is partially shifting to new issues, which include application scenarios (road safety, disaster recovery, sensors and actuators, etc.), autonomous organization and operation, optimization and control, service creation and support, middleware. Moreover, wireless MESH networking is emerging as an "ad hoc spin-off" aimed at extending and integrating the multi-hop paradigm with more traditional networking, which poses new and exciting technical challenges. Med-Hoc-Net 2008 is the major annual international workshop aiming to serve as a platform for researchers and visionaries from academia, research labs, and industry from all over the world. Sharing ideas, views, results, and experiences in the field of wireless multi-hop networking is what Med-Hoc-Net 2008 intends to be about. Anything from theoretical and experimental achievements, to innovative ad hoc systems, prototyping efforts, and case studies is of interest to the Med-Hoc-Net community. The papers solicited in Med-Hoc-Net 2008 cover a variety of topics related to ad hoc and MESH networks, including but not limited to: - Novel multi-hop wireless network architectures - Routing algorithms and protocols - MAC protocols, scheduling, power control and radio resource sharing - Transport layer protocols for multi-hop networks - Middleware for ad hoc networks - Application driven architectures and protocols - Sensor network applications and protocols - Vehicular networks - Integration of ad hoc networks with wireless access networks - Implementations, testbeds, and prototypes - Technology related issues (IEEE 802.11, Bluetooth, ZigBee, IEEE 802.16, IEEE 802.20, etc.) - Self organization and network reconfiguration - Optimization models and algorithms - Resource and service discovery - Call admission and traffic shaping policies for ad-hoc networks - Use of advanced antenna technologies (MIMO, beam forming, etc.) - QoS support - Security and privacy The members of program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings by Springer Science-Business Media (SSBM) in LNCS or IFIP Series. Authors should submit a paper in English of up to 12 pages, carefully checked for correct grammar and spelling. MediaWiN 2008 is an open forum, which aims at promoting interaction and discussion between the Workshop contributors. The event offers the opportunity to leading researchers, industry professionals, and academics around the world to meet, present their work, and discuss the latest advances in multimedia systems, services, and applications over wireless networks. The 2008 Networking and Electronic Commerce Research Conference (NAEC2008) Riva Del Garda, Italy, September 25-28, 2008 http://atsma.org/NAEC_2008/ <http://atsma.org/NAEC2006/> [My apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message] Following the success of NAEC2006 and NAEC2007, the 2008 Networking and Electronic Commerce Research Conference addresses these needs. NAEC conferences bring together academic and industrial researchers from various fields to discuss developments and challenges of networking and electronic business. The aim of the conference is to provide a high quality forum for the presentation of results, exchange of ideas, and scientific discussions on challenges, methodologies, new technologies and their impact, computational and deployment issues, policies and advanced applications in the area of networking and e-business. Our goal is to open the conference to participants from all fields, in particular, business, telecommunications, computer science, management sciences and operations research, economics, legal and policy studies. The conference will combine technical presentations grouped in research sessions, with industry and research plenary speakers, as well as industry-lead panels. Papers submitted for presentation at the conference will be refereed and selected based on the full paper (15 to 35 pages) or an extended abstract (2 to 4 pages).
