Please find the full copy of call for papers below. +-------------------------------------------------------------+ HotMobile 2008 The Ninth Workshop on Mobile Computing, Systems and Applications Silverado Resort, Napa Valley, CA, USA February 25-26, 2008 http://www.cs.umass.edu/hotmobile2008 Sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE +-------------------------------------------------------------+ ACM HotMobile 2008, the Ninth Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and Applications continues the series of highly selective, interactive workshops focused on mobile applications, systems, and environments, as well as their underlying state-of-the-art technologies. HotMobile's small workshop format makes it ideal for presenting and discussing new directions or controversial approaches. We solicit submissions of position papers that focus primarily on applications and systems and that propose new directions of research, advocate non-traditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate controversy and discussion. We particularly look for position papers containing highly original ideas in the following topic areas, although papers describing other challenges unique to or exacerbated by mobility are also welcome: * Operating system and distributed systems support for mobile computing * Coordination, aggregation, and spontaneous interaction of mobile devices * Novel applications and environments supporting mobility * HCI issues related to mobile computing * Security and privacy of mobile computing * Management, configuration, and deployment of systems supporting mobility Submissions describing new lower-level technologies are welcome if they focus on how the technology is being used or integrated into a system or application. HotMobile 2008 will be a highly interactive workshop. Submissions will be judged based upon originality, technical merit, topical relevance, and likelihood of leading to insightful discussion at the workshop. To encourage an atmosphere conducive to participation, attendance will be limited to 70 participants. Authors of submitted papers and accepted demo proposals will be given first priority, with others able to register on a space-available basis. Paper submissions are due on Oct 16, 2007 at 23:59:59 EDT. Submissions should contain 6 or fewer U.S. letter pages in PDF format. Papers should be single column using 11pt font. The conference proceedings will be published by the ACM. Preliminary proceedings will be made available to workshop participants online ahead of the workshop. Printed proceedings will be published and mailed to participants after the workshop. As is customary, papers must not have been published elsewhere and may not be simultaneously under submission at another venue. Poster and demo submissions are due on January 14th, 2008 at 23:59:59 EST. Submissions must include an extended abstract limited to one 8.5x11-inch page in 12pt font. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany http://www.tm.uka.de/wons2008 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Scope of the conference ----------------------- With the increasing variety of wireless technologies, ubiquitous connectivity and service provisioning more and more complements traditional, infrastructure-based cellular networks. WLANs, WiMax, Mobile Ad-hoc networks as well as vehicular networks and sensor networks are popular examples. The goal is to provide services "on demand" with minimal planning and management effort as well as with little dependency on existing network infrastructures. On-demand provisioning of services in such infrastructure-less environments is a challenge in itself. Methods for self-organisation are strongly required to enable this vision. Other challenges are posed by the architectures suited for different networks and applications (e.g., specialized architectures for sensor networks) also raising issues with respect to interoperability. WONS is now at its fifth edition and is still confronted with new technical challenges and new application demands. As such it provides a premier forum for high quality paper presentations and lively discussions. By viewing technologies through a Kaleidoscope, these forward looking conferences will also seek to identify new topics for standardization. Arguably no industry undergoes faster changes than the ICT industry. So looking five, ten or more years into the future - What will the network look like? Which services will be offered? How will it affect people's lives? To this end ITU, with technical co-sponsor IEEE Communications Society, is issuing this third CfP. NGN represents one of the most complex transitions ever to have occurred in telecoms. Taking into account new realities in the ICT industry such as the need to converge and optimise operating networks and the extraordinary expansion of digital traffic, NGN will enable a richer set of applications to the end user, as well as allowing operators to benefit from a far simpler architecture and the economies of scale associated with standards. In addition, in NGN, new services can be added far more quickly and easily, without the need to add any new network infrastructure. Objectives Innovations in NGN will bring together visionary ideas on the future of NGN. It is to inspire contributions towards a kaleidoscopic view of communication habits for the future and it will highlight technologies, services and applications five years and beyond that will capitalize on the NGN infrastructure and lead to the ubiquitous network society in which information can be accessed anywhere and anytime by anyone and anything. The event will also cover multidisciplinary aspects related to the deployment of NGN, including analysis of regulatory and societal challenges. Audience Innovations in NGN is targeted at all researchers, academics, students, engineers, regulators and thinkers who go "beyond the next quarter". No participation fee will be charged. Date and venue 12-13 May 2008, Geneva, Switzerland. Submission of papers Prospective authors, in particular from academia and R&D centres, are invited to submit complete, original papers with up to 6000 words including summary and references using the template at the conference website. (The camera-ready version will be limited to a maximum of eight pages). Main themes are suggested below. All papers will be handled electronically and reviewed through a double-blind, peer-review process. Please note that the submission dates for papers are strict deadlines. This event focuses on research and practical applications of network measurement and analysis techniques. The conference's goal is to provide a forum for current work in its early stages. Therefore, an award will be given at PAM 2008 for the best paper based on a new dataset that the authors are releasing for community use in subsequent research. To qualify, a paper must significantly utilize a dataset that has been collected for the work presented in the paper. Further, the dataset must be freely available to any researcher; wireless data sets may, for instance, be published through CRAWDAD. Novel datasets are especially encouraged. The awarded paper will be chosen from the set of qualifying papers accepted for the conference by a committee made up of a subset of the program and steering committees. Ubi-com is a user-centric environment where various kinds of computers is embodied into person, object and the environment which are connected each others and the seamless services are provided to users anytime, anywhere with any device. However, many security risks and problems might take place since data resources can be connected and accessed by anyone in Ubi-com. Therefore, more secure and intelligent mechanism in Ubi- com will be necessary. Submissions will be judged on originality, significance, interest, clarity, relevance, and technical correctness. Accepted papers will be shepherded by a member of the program committee. Typical application domains for MCN include critical infrastructure protection, emergency and crisis intervention, and military operations. Such networking is essential for safety, security and economic vitality in our complex world characterized by uncertainty, heterogeneity and emergent behaviors. MCN should comprise the best possible networking technology, infrastructure and services that may alleviate the risk and help save the lives of both the general public and the network users. As advances in pervasive computing, wireless communication, ad hoc and mesh networking and networked sensor systems continue, more opportunities are being opened to mission-critical networks to benefit from these technologies. A primary challenge to the operations of mission-critical networks is to deploy a communication network that is dependable, autonomic, secure, and rapidly deployable. In order to operate effectively, the deployed networks should support services such as location determination of authorized and unauthorized entities, audio and video communication, secure emergency calling and alerting, and in-situ and remote sensing and control in a secure and dependable manner. In addition, efficient operation of such networks that typically include numerous resource-constrained components may benefit from cross-layer optimization, cognition, resource engineering, visual analytics, and service-oriented architecture. Another key feature for mission-critical networking is to support interactions among multiple heterogeneous networks. This workshop solicits high quality technical contributions to the area of mission-critical networking. The manuscript must explicitly address relevance to MCN. Mobile communication has experienced an explosive growth since close to quarter of a century. In particular, the mobile ad hoc network technology has attracted significant attention in the last decade or so due its challenging research problems, and span off such new research areas as mesh-based mobile networks and sensor networks. What characterizes nearly all of those mobile technologies is that during the exchange of information between the source and destination terminals, there exists a set of links which constitutes an end-to-end path over which the information is communicated. In some application scenarios, however, the connectivity between the mobile stations is poor due to very sparse network conditions (low node density) or due to unstable connectivity conditions (interference, fading, etc), and thus it is difficult to form a well-connected mesh network for transmitting data through end-to-end connections. In fact, even if there temporarily exists a path in the network for some portion of the communication, it is likely that the terminals will only be intermittently connected due to mobility. As a result, data are delivered in a store-carry and forward paradigm in such networks. Examples include vehicular networks, mobile sensor networks, deep space communications, etc. In this workshop we aim to explore novel research issues related to Delay (or Disruption)-Tolerant Mobile Networks (DTMN) and bringing together state-of-the-art contributions in this emerging area. PAPER ONE: "Empirical Prediction of Computer-Network Evolution" Sami J. Habib, Kuwait University, Kuwait This article presents a computer-aided integration tool, iCAD, that can predict a network evolution. We have used the term a network evolution to mean predicting changes within the physical network topology as time evolves. iCAD is connected to four device libraries, each of which contains a distinct set of network-technology devices, such as Ethernet hubs, ATM switches, IP routers, and gateways. As a network technology changes, each device library is updated. Then, we have plotted the cost and performance changes between the old and recent network technologies, enabling us to predict future changes to a first order. This article presents empirical results from 1999 until 2005 recording the network evolution progress, where the lower and upper bounds of network evolution came out to be 10% to 25% and 57% to 74% respectively in terms of network-design cost reduction. To maintain a good quality of service and to make a profit for the content provider, services must have the optimum configuration. With this aim, the configuration process must be based on an accurate service behavioural analysis which evaluates the quality and the quantity of resources, contents and subscribers. This analysis can be performed using monitored information and predictions of a near future behaviour using laboratory experiments. To formalize both analysis and configuration, a methodology must be developed in order to help service managers attain a good performance and at the same time, make a profit for their companies. All the methodology goals are based on the principle that 'a satisfied client provides more profit'. The wireless mesh networks are multihop networks of wireless-router platforms. The wireless routers are typically stationary, but the clients can be mobile. A mesh network can provide multihop communication paths between wireless clients, serving as a community network or as a broadband access network for the Internet. Though no routing protocols exist for wireless mesh networknetworks, the author has tried using AODV, which has been proved effective for wireless mesh networknetworks. Although research is being done in revisiting the MAC and routing protocols for wireless mesh networknetworks, one of the major problems faced in 802.11b mesh networks is channel interference. Based on the above facts, an attempt has been made to study the performance of the 802.11b mesh network under channel interference. The performance differentials are analyzed in terms of throughput, end-to-end delay, and MAC delay. Unlike the telecom-centric networks of the 90's that had an inward focus on network signaling & control today's intelligent networks are designed from an application perspective. Here, networks could mean a set of collaborative data processing nodes that serve as application proxies ( e.g., airborne nodes in a police surveillance network). The goal of contemporary Intelligent Networking is to improve application-level reliability & performance, security, QoS assurance, and the like. The need for intelligent networking arises because the target application systems are too complex to be studied in isolation. A holistic approach to design that addresses both application and network, can result in performance gains. Often, mathematical models and/or closed-form representations of target application systems do not exist or are too unwieldy to allow offline analysis. For instance, network outages can have a profound impact on the application reliability in many military applications, but can be tolerated in certain commercial application domains. The mapping relationship between the network events and the application activities are deeply buried in the system operations, with no apparent mechanism for the system designers to track these cross-layer relationships. The complex nature of modern day embedded systems applications provides a new dimension to the concept of intelligent networking --- and hence opens a set of new research directions. This new dimension covers three aspects: adaptation to resources & environment, reliable communications between nodes, and reconfigurations at various system levels. The multiple (usually small) robots communicate each other, sharing the same mission, naturally through wireless communications. In this respect, wireless multihop communication is an excellent candidate for inter-robot information exchange. The main idea of this workshop is to bridge the above two areas (wireless multihop communications and networked robotics) by opening a place for researchers to meet and exchange their ideas. In particular, we now face the possibility to spontaneously establish wireless self- organizing networks, such as ad hoc, disruption-tolerant, sensor, and wireless mesh networks. These spontaneous self-organizing networks have been the focus of intensive research activity in recent years. Spontaneous networks arise from the cooperation of mobile devices in an ad hoc fashion requiring no previous infrastructure in place. A key point to couple research and real-life applications in this context is to understand how mobility (of devices, users, and applications) impacts practical networking aspects. The knowledge accumulated so far in the area of wireless self-organizing networks is in general supported by either simulation or theoretical analysis relying on strong assumptions. The research community needs a step forward and should definitely consider real aspects of mobility in their protocols and algorithms. Such a situation is to be compared with the one found for infrastructure-based networks (e.g., cellular networks), in which mobility has been thoroughly investigated (both theoretically and through measurements) and properly incorporated in their management architecture. In wireless self-organizing networks, contrary to common belief, much is still to be done in this domain, and definitive solutions are still to emerge. Mobility can no longer be seen as an issue to be hidden from higher layers of the protocol stack, but as an expected characteristic of today's communication systems. In this context, it is of utmost importance to address issues related to the impact of mobility as seen in practice, covering characterization, modeling, and applications of mobility in modern wireless networks. The research community working on wireless self-organizing networks has recently started giving more attention to the practical mobility issues in this area. This may be attested by the increasing number of initiatives worldwide like the many measurement campaigns and the considerable body of developed theoretical background work supported by practical arguments (e.g., mobility models, mobility increasing network capacity, relationship between node mobility and wireless channel conditions). The goal of this special issue is to help filling this gap by presenting contributions ranging from the impact of mobility on self-organizing networks to mobility-aware architectures for self-organizing networks. As we intend to focus on the practical impacts of mobility in wireless self-organizing networks, papers presenting insights from the applicability of mobility measurements and realistic mobility models in this context are also expected. HotMobile's small workshop format makes it ideal for presenting and discussing new directions or controversial approaches. We solicit submissions of position papers that focus primarily on applications and systems and that propose new directions of research, advocate non-traditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate controversy and discussion. We particularly look for position papers containing highly original ideas in the following topic areas, although papers describing other challenges unique to or exacerbated by mobility are also welcome: * Operating system and distributed systems support for mobile computing * Coordination, aggregation, and spontaneous interaction of mobile devices * Novel applications and environments supporting mobility * HCI issues related to mobile computing * Security and privacy of mobile computing * Management, configuration, and deployment of systems supporting mobility Submissions describing new lower-level technologies are welcome if they focus on how the technology is being used or integrated into a system or application. HotMobile 2008 will be a highly interactive workshop. Submissions will be judged based upon originality, technical merit, topical relevance, and likelihood of leading to insightful discussion at the workshop. To encourage an atmosphere conducive to participation, attendance will be limited to 70 participants. Authors of submitted papers and accepted demo proposals will be given first priority, with others able to register on a space-available basis. Paper submissions are due on Oct 16, 2007 at 23:59:59 EST. Submissions should contain 6 or fewer U.S. letter pages in PDF format. Papers should be single column using 12pt font. The conference proceedings will be published by the ACM. Preliminary proceedings will be made available to workshop participants online ahead of the workshop. Printed proceedings will be published and mailed to participants after the workshop. As is customary, papers must not have been published elsewhere and may not be simultaneously under submission at another venue. Poster and demo submissions are due on January 14th, 2008 at 23:59:59 EST. Submissions must include an extended abstract limited to one 8.5x11-inch page in 12pt font. This dependency creates strict requirements for the delivered services. These requirements affect to he quality of service, continuous availability, survivability in the advent of catastrophic failures, confidentiality, intrusion tolerance, etc. Dependability is a concept that considers all these cross-cutting concerns and required attributes, such as reliability, availability, safety, and security, as well as human factors. The seventh European Dependable Computing Conference aims at providing a European-hosted venue for researchers and practioners from all over the world to present and discuss their latest research achievements. Original papers are solicited on theory, techniques, systems, and tools for the design, validation, operation and evaluation of dependable computing systems. All kinds of faults are of interest, from traditional hardware and software faults to accidental and malicious human interactions. EDCC is the successor of two European conference series on fault-tolerance, dependability, and testing dating back to the 70s and 80s. EDCC is now an established conference on dependability organized every 2 years by a European country and attracting papers from all over the world. INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS: Manuscripts should be submitted in the following categories: Regular Papers, Practical Experience Reports, Prototype-Tool descriptions and Panels. Regular Papers should describe original research (not submitted or published elsewhere) and be not more than 20 double-spaced pages including figures and tables using 11-point type. Practical Experience Reports (5-12 pages) should describe an experience or a case study, such as the design and deployment of a system or actual failure and recovery field data. Prototype-Tool description papers (5-12 pages) should outline the design or implementation of a software tool, a prototype or an operational system, etc. Panels (2-4 pages) should describe the panel objectives, and include the bios of the Panel proposers and the probable panelists. The title page of each submission should include a 150-word abstract, five keywords, authors' names and address and include a line specifying the submission category. The conference builds on previous highly influential meetings in New York, Seattle, Dublin and Jacksonville. Papers are solicited on a broad array of topics of relevance to autonomic computing. In particular, this conference will focus on three areas: networking applications of autonomic technologies, semantic reasoning as used in autonomic devices, systems and applications, and research and/or reports on prototype systems or experiences. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following: * Autonomic computing systems that exhibit autonomic characteristics, such as self-configuration, self-optimization, self-healing, self-protection, and self-governance. * Fundamental scientific aspects of self-managing systems: understanding, controlling, and/or exploiting emergent behavior; methods to automate manual operations; implementation of new device, network and system functionality; behavior orchestration. * Software architectures for self-managing systems, based on appropriate supporting technologies such as Grid Services, agent-based systems, Web Services, model-based systems or novel paradigms such as biological, economic or social computing. * System-level technologies, middleware or services that entail interactions among two or more elements of self-managing components, devices and systems. * Toolkits, environments, models, languages, runtime and compiler technologies for building self-managing components, systems and applications. * Self-managing components, such as server, storage, network, mobile device, data center or specific application elements. Emphasis should be placed on techniques or lessons that may generalized to other components. * Interfaces to autonomic systems, including user interfaces, mechanisms for controlling behavior, and techniques for defining, distributing, and understanding policies. * Applications of autonomic systems with respect to future Internet and other next generation architectures. * Experiences with autonomic systems or component prototypes: measurements, evaluations, or analyses of system behavior, user studies, or experiences with large-scale deployments of self- managing systems or applications. * General management topics, such as minimization of power/energy consumption, modeling of communications entities (e.g., SLAs), negotiation/conversation support, behavior enforcement, tie in with IT governance, and legacy system support. PAPER/POSTER SUBMISSIONS AND PUBLICATION Full papers (a maximum of 10 pages in length) and posters (2 pages) are invited on a wide variety of topics relating to autonomic computing as indicated above. All manuscripts will be reviewed and judged on merits including correctness, originality, technical strength, quality of presentation, and relevance to the conference themes. Submitted papers must include original work, and may not be under consideration for another conference or journal. They should also not be under review or be submitted to another forum during the ICAC-08 review process. Posters are not subject to any of these restrictions. It is now well-accepted that the total costs of system ownership can have a significant effect on the economics of many service offerings, as well as threatening life and economic health in the event of failures. Autonomic computing and communications apply notions of feedback control, self-organisation, monitoring and reasoning to the construction and management of large systems. Originally suggested by IBM as a way to control total costs of ownership, the fields have expanded to address the design and implementation of stable, "self-*" algorithms as well as the overall design and analysis of adaptive properties and behaviour. Such self-* systems offer to improve the dynamic responses of systems to changing conditions, simplifying their construction, management and deployment. Although often considered separately, the interdependence of computing and communications in the modern world implies that we apply autonomic techniques on a whole-system basis that encompasses both aspects of systems design. In this special issue we have two aims: to provide a guide to a unified field of autonomic computing and communications through invited contributions addressing cross-system and whole-system techniques; and to present novel research contributions that advance the state of autonomic and self-organising systems design. With this in mind, we invite research contributions including (but most definitely not limited to) the following topics: - techniques for self-organisation at a system level - foundational science of autonomics and self-organisation - application of novel techniques to large-scale problems - self-stabilising and self-optimising algorithms - evaluations and evaluation methodologies for self-organising systems - managing trade-offs between system aspects Contributions addressing issues that cross between the autonomic computing and communication fields are particularly welcome. Autonomic computing and communications apply notions of feedback control, self-organisation, monitoring and reasoning to the construction and management of large systems. Originally suggested by IBM as a way to control total costs of ownership, the fields have expanded to address the design and implementation of stable, "self-*" algorithms as well as the overall design and analysis of adaptive properties and behaviour. Such self-* systems offer to improve the dynamic responses of systems to changing conditions, simplifying their construction, management and deployment. Although often considered separately, the interdependence of computing and communications in the modern world implies that we apply autonomic techniques on a whole-system basis that encompasses both aspects of systems design. In this special issue we have two aims: to provide a guide to a unified field of autonomic computing and communications through invited contributions addressing cross-system and whole-system techniques; and to present novel research contributions that advance the state of autonomic and self-organising systems design. With this in mind, we invite research contributions including (but most definitely not limited to) the following topics: - techniques for self-organisation at a system level - foundational science of autonomics and self-organisation - application of novel techniques to large-scale problems - self-stabilising and self-optimising algorithms - evaluations and evaluation methodologies for self-organising systems - managing trade-offs between system aspects Contributions addressing issues that cross between the autonomic computing and communication fields are particularly welcome. Unlike the telecom-centric networks of the 90's that had an inward focus on network signaling & control today's intelligent networks are designed from an application perspective. Here, networks could mean a set of collaborative data processing nodes that serve as application proxies ( e.g., airborne nodes in a police surveillance network). The goal of contemporary Intelligent Networking is to improve application-level reliability & performance, security, QoS assurance, and the like. The need for intelligent networking arises because the target application systems are too complex to be studied in isolation. A holistic approach to design that addresses both application and network, can result in performance gains. Often, mathematical models and/or closed-form representations of target application systems do not exist or are too unwieldy to allow offline analysis. For instance, network outages can have a profound impact on the application reliability in many military applications, but can be tolerated in certain commercial application domains. The mapping relationship between the network events and the application activities are deeply buried in the system operations, with no apparent mechanism for the system designers to track these cross-layer relationships. The complex nature of modern day embedded systems applications provides a new dimension to the concept of intelligent networking --- and hence opens a set of new research directions. This new dimension covers three aspects: adaptation to resources & environment, reliable communications between nodes, and reconfigurations at various system levels. Please feel free to distribute it to those who might be interested. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers Pervasive and Mobile Computing Journal Special Issue on Homeland and Global Security The development, deployment and coordination of pervasive and mobile computing (PMC) has been studied for a number of years, and much of this research is beginning to transition into real solutions for a variety of domains. One domain that is ripe for PMC research and development is homeland and global security. Much of the security mission involves the monitoring of various environments (e.g., ports, borders, mass transit hubs, financial centers, power grids, the Internet) and the prediction and detection of threats to these environments. PMC represents a general solution to maintaining security in these environments. In this special issue we seek contributions representing the state-of-the-art in PMC research and technology targeted toward homeland and global security. Components of such approaches include novel sensor and sensor systems for the detection of various threats, efficient and effective deployment of mobile devices and sensors in such environments, heterogeneous systems for surveillance and threat detection, secure and fault tolerant coordination and communication of sensors in homeland and global security environments, information fusion for prediction and detection of threats, integration and registration of data from multiple sources, and effective decision-making in dynamic environments. And since the nature of the challenge restricts in situ testing of the various approaches, high-fidelity simulation and modeling of such systems is necessary, including the mobile devices and sensors, their communication, the data produced, the characteristics of potential threats, and the temporal interaction in response to the sequence of events leading up to the threat. The objective of this special issue is to gather high quality research papers that address PMC applied to the challenges of homeland and global security. Prospective authors are invited to submit manuscripts containing original research in this area. Topics on integrated and demonstrated systems and experiments with real- world data and involving users are highly encouraged. Behaviour of context-aware applications depends not only on their internal state and user interactions but also on the context sensed during their execution. Some early models of context information already exist, however many research issues related to context information modeling are still not fully addressed. Existing context models vary in types of context information they can represent. While some models take the user’s current situation, e.g. “in a meeting”, into account others model the physical environment, i.e. locations. A more generic approach to context modeling is needed in order to capture various features of context information including a variety of types of context information, dependencies between context information, quality of context information and context histories. In addition, to ease software engineering problems encountered in programming context-aware applications, appropriate abstractions are necessary to support discovery and reuse of context information as well as scalable methods of context processing and management. This workshop’s aim is to advance the state of the art in context modeling and reasoning and also discuss fundamental issues in context processing and management. The goal is to identify concepts, theories and methods applicable to context modeling and context reasoning as well as system-oriented issues related to the design and implementation of context-aware systems. Particular attention will be paid to hybrid approaches to context modeling, e.g. an integration of non-ontology based context models with ontology based context models. Pervasive computing conferences and in particular dedicated workshops (i.e., the CoMoRea?2003-2008 workshops at PerCom and the Ubicomp workshops) are attracting a large number of papers related to context modelling, reasoning and management and influence the direction of research in this area. There is already a consensus in the research community that formal modelling of context information and appropriate reasoning and management techniques are needed. However, many research issues in this field are still open, including heterogeneity of context information, imperfection of context information, complex mapping between raw context data (e.g., sensor readings) and abstract context information required by applications, privacy of context information, limitations and efficiency of reasoning techniques, and difficulties of managing and provisioning context information in systems where mobility and disconnections are common. The purpose of this special issue is to present the state-of-the-art in context information modelling, reasoning and management. The special issue will include a collection of papers that discuss concepts, theories and methods applicable to context modelling and reasoning, as well as system-oriented issues related to the design and implementation of context-aware systems. Prospective authors are invited to submit manuscripts containing original research. Topics of interests include, but are not limited to: * Context information modelling techniques, * Domain-specific models of context information, * Hybrid models of context information (integration of various modelling techniques), * Context information reasoning algorithms, their complexity and accuracy, * Discovery and reuse of context information, * Privacy of context information, * Distributed and scalable context information management, * Context model driven application design. Manuscripts must not have been previously published or currently under consideration for publication elsewhere. The manuscript should be at least 1.5 spaced and must not exceed 35 pages (all inclusive.) If the paper has been published in a conference, the submitted version should be a significantly enhanced version. Authors are requested to submit their published conference articles and a summary document explaining the enhancements made in the journal version. The manuscript preparation guidelines can be obtained from the PMC Journal's web page (<http://www.elsevier.com/locate/pmc>). The deadline for submitting manuscripts is February 1, 2008 and authors will be notified of the decision by June 15, 2008. The final manuscripts will be due Dec 1, 2008.
