Such systems are crucial for medical specialists, allowing a deeper analysis and to understand what is going inside the human body, and therefore they play an essential role for adequate medical diagnosis and treatments. To accomplish efficient and powerful medical imaging systems, many research works have being done in many domains, like the ones related with medical image devices, signal processing, image processing and analysis, biomechanical simulation and data visualization. The main goal of the Workshop “Medical Imaging Systems” is to bring together researchers involved in the related domains, in order to set the major lines of development for the near future. Therefore, the proposed Workshop will consist of researchers representing various fields related to Medical Devices, Signal Processing, Computational Vision, Computer Graphics, Computational Mechanics, Scientific Visualization, Mathematics and Medical Imaging. The Workshop endeavors to contribute to obtain better solutions for more efficient and powerful medical imaging systems, and attempts to establish a bridge between clinicians and researchers from these diverse fields. The proposed Workshop will cover topics related with medical imaging systems, such as: • image acquisition • signal processing • image processing and analysis • modelling and simulation • computer aided diagnosis • surgery, therapy, and treatment • computational bioimaging and visualization • software development • virtual reality • telemedicine systems and their applications [] D-TV Scope: In contrast to traditional TV DTV is a telecommunication system for broadcasting and receiving moving pictures and sound by means of digital signals. It uses digitally compressed modulation data, which requires decoding by a specially designed television set or a standard receiver (set-top box) as well as via PC-TV based on ADLS (VDSL). Digital Television has several advantages regarding technically as well as content and programme related aspects. One of the most significant is the use of a smaller channel bandwidth. This frees up space for more digital channels, other non-television services such as pay-multimedia services and the generation of new revenue models based on interactive advertisement and marketing features. Furthermore there are special services such as multicasting (more than one programme on the same channel), electronic programme guides and interactivity providing a wider range of application. Accordingly within the last year a growing up of specialised digital TV channels (Special Interest Channels) has to be observed European wide. This new growing up stream is mainly characterised by the phenomena of merging television (TV) and information technology (IT) know how, methods and techniques. In this context the workshop targets to show up the development in both directions: the technically aspects as well as the content and programme issues. It provides a presentation and discussion platform for exchanging experiences made within the establishment as well as the maintenance of digital special interest channels. Main focus will be to point out the interdependencies and the mutual influences of technically streams and content respectively service related issues. The symposium is primarily interested in papers reporting on innovative research resulting in real implementations and working prototypes. Work in progress and new ideas will also be accepted as well as presentations of new products. The program will consist of technical sessions, product/industrial presentations, a keynote, a demonstration session, a poster session and one panel, scheduled over 2.5 days. During the event, an industrial exhibition will be also organized. Short tutorials, especially in non-technical related areas, such as transportation policies and social aspects will also be organized, in order to offer a multi-disciplinary perspective on the field. The event is co-located with MobiQuitous 2008 (http://www.mobiquitous.org/), allowing researchers and practitioners from these related fields to meet and exchange their ideas and experiences. TOPICS OF INTEREST The symposium calls for three categories of contributions: research, position and product presentation papers. These two requirements are naturally supported by decentralized and self-organizing IT-infrastructures. While p2p systems like Groove achieve an easy way of enabling communication between heterogeneous first response teams. There are crucial inefficiencies in terms of network resource utilization, which is a vitally important requirement in crisis response situations. There are still numerous open topics necessary to put crisis response and management software on a solid technical base. Focus for this special session is the technical management of distributed crisis response systems. The areas covered by this session are listed below. Additional contributions concerning crisis response systems that are not explicitly mentioned but fit into the scope of this session are welcomed as well. Research Area The technical challenges for a successful deployment of a Crisis Response and Management System can be divided in three main areas. --------------------------------------------------------- Crisis Management Applications --------------------------------------------------------- Decentralized and Self-organizing IT Infrastructure --------------------------------------------------------- TCP/IP-based Communication Layer --------------------------------------------------------- While the base for communication, shown as TCP/IP based communication layer is crucial for a successful deployment of a Crisis Response System, the main focus of this special session is the second layer "Decentralized and Self Organizing IT infrastructure". The underlying TCP/IP based communication layer becomes increasingly more a commodity product while intelligent replica placement, distributed storage, service discovery, access control and context awareness need to be provided by the second layer. Based on the available services and infrastructure of the second layer the top layer provides various user interfaces to the deployed services. While all three layers are needed for a successful deployment of a Crisis Response and Management System, the main focus of this session is on the design of the second layer. Topics . While physical transmission media enable such high-bitrate communications, existing link, network, transport, and application protocols and their software and hardware implementations in both end systems and core nodes have not yet realized this potential. The limitations of the current designs justify exploration of novel clean-slate approaches to dependable high-bitrate networking desired in e-Science, medicine, entertainment, data centers and other application domains. HSN 2008 provides a unique forum for discussions centered on the design, validation and deployment of high-speed networks without imposing the constraint of straightforward integration of the proposed ideas into the existing network infrastructure. All topics pertinent to high-speed networking are of interest. They include but are not limited to the following: * Network architectures including clean-slate approaches * Switching technologies including packet and circuit switching * Transport protocols including congestion control, scheduling and reliable delivery * Applications requiring high-speed end-to-end services * Cross-layer network protocols * Security at high bitrates and with large data volumes * Node design including network processors, configurable logic, input/output and storage * Innovative physical transmission media and associated systems * Metropolitan area networks, Carrier Ethernet and next-generation optical transport * High-speed access technologies Submission Guidelines The workshop solicits submissions between 3 and 6 pages long. Building on the success of previous workshops, the objective of the workshop is to bring together researchers, developers, and practitioners working in this area to discuss recent and innovative results, and to identify future directions and challenges in developing practical computer/communication systems where predictable, controlled, and robust performance is a central requirement. IWQoS has a long standing tradition of being highly interactive, while maintaining highest standards of competitiveness and excellence. The scope of the workshop covers the main and currently important aspects of QoS research, including related issues such as availability, reliability, security, pricing, resource management, and performance guarantees. März 2008, Fachhochschule Wiesbaden im Rahmen eines gemeinsamen Treffens der GI/ITG-Fachgruppen KuVS und Betriebssysteme *** Einreichungstermin: 14.01.2008 *** Motivation Die aktuelle Entwicklung verteilter Systeme wird geprägt von neuartigen technischen Möglichkeiten, IT-Systeme überall in unserem täglichen Leben einzusetzen und sie auf die Umgebung oder den Anwender selbständig reagieren und anpassen zu lassen. Mit der wachsenden Zahl dieser vernetzten Systeme steigt der Aufwand beträchtlich, solche IT-Landschaften aufzubauen und zu verwalten. Statische Konfiguration und manuelle Steuerung der Systeme werden in Zukunft dieser wachsenden Größe, Dynamik und Allgegenwart der IT-Systeme nicht mehr gerecht. Stattdessen sind dynamische Anpassungsfähigkeit, autonomes Handeln und Selbstverwaltung gefordert. Häufig wird dieser Ansatz von Beispielen aus der Natur genährt: Ameisenkolonien und Fischschwärme dienen als Inspiration und Vorbilder für die Entwicklung selbstorganisierender und anpassungsfähiger Systeme. Doch jenseits der nahe liegenden Simulationen von natürlichen Vorgängen hat die Forschung einen bislang nur schwer einschätzbaren, langen Weg vor sich. Zahlreiche Begriffe der Systemtheorie, wie etwa Selbstorganisation oder Emergenz, lassen eine strenge Definition innerhalb der Informatik bislang vermissen. Es zeigen sich zwar allerorten Bemühungen, natürliche Phänomene in der Erwartung nachzubilden, die Komplexität großer Netze autonomer Systeme zu beherrschen, doch sind diese bislang kaum über den Prototypzustand hinausgelangt und in der realen Anwendung noch wenig überzeugend. Der Workshop widmet sich den Themen Selbstorganisation, Kontextsensitivität und Adaptivität in verteilten Systemen. Dabei sind alle Belange verteilter Systeme von der Kommunikation über die Middleware bis zu den Anwendungen von Interesse. Der Themenbereich ist absichtlich weit abgesteckt, damit die inhärente Vielfalt und die zahlreichen Querbezüge diskutiert werden können. Nur so kann sich die Informatik diesem ungemein vielschichtigen Problemfeld nähern und zu konstruktiven Ansätzen gelangen. Ziel Ziel des Workshops ist eine Fortsetzung des Ideenaustauschs, wie er in den gleichnamigen Veranstaltungen SAKS an der Universität Kassel 2006 sowie im Workshop an der KiVS-Tagung in Bern im März 2007 zu erleben war. Die Bestandsaufnahme von Forschungs- und Entwicklungsaktivitäten, die im deutschsprachigen Raum auf dem beschriebenen Gebiet bearbeitet werden, soll fortgesetzt werden. Wir hoffen, dass der Workshop die Kooperation der beteiligten Akteure und Fachgruppen weiter stärkt und mittelfristig zu einer stärkeren internationalen Sichtbarkeit der deutschsprachigen Forschung und Entwicklung auf diesem Gebiet führt. Insbesondere ist die Teilnahme von Vertretern aus der Industrie erwünscht, um den Kontakt zur industriellen Praxis zu intensivieren und gemeinsame Interessen auszuloten. Themen und Beiträge Der Workshop soll primär der Diskussion und der Vernetzung der Akteure beider Fachgruppen dienen. Daher sind neben Berichten über bereits erzielte Ergebnisse auch Vorstellungen von neuen Projekten und laufenden Arbeiten sehr erwünscht. Moreover, there are also other types of middleboxes, such as Virtual Private Network (VPN) gateways, Application Layer Gateways (ALG), Performance Enhancing Proxies (PEP) and web proxies. These intermediary boxes perform functions different from normal IP packet treatment, which can even change the content of packets or do rerouting of IP packets. There have been diverse views on the value of middleboxes. Some believe that middleboxes introduce problems for network applications as well as challenges to the traditional end-to-end Internet architecture. These issues range, for instance, but not limited to, from naming and addressing of nodes behind NATs, directionality of communication establishment, and performance impairments. On the other hand, many administrators and operators see the middleboxes represent an important part for their network operations. For example, firewalls are widely deployed with the intention of securing enterprise, campus and home networks, so as to block attacks to nodes or keep nodes from sending malicious traffic. The Internet community has acknowledged the emergence of the middleboxes and developed middlebox control and coordination protocols that allow end hosts (or application proxies) to learn about the presence of middleboxes and communicate their needs (i.e. required packet treatment) to those devices. A number of middlebox control protocols, such as UPnP, MIDCOM and STUN, have been developed over the years and are partially used in current deployments. The papers in this special issue will focus on the state-of-the-art research in various aspects of middleboxes and middlebox control mechanisms, which help to understand their impact to the Internet architecture and network operations, and how they can be further integrated, or leveraged for different purposes, such as load balancing and mobile network environments, among the others. Efficient mobility management and mobility optimizations, locator-identifier splits, multihoming, security and related network operation and management functions are still in the early stages of development. It is, however, already clear that supporting widespread mobility poses to significantly impact the original end-to-end design of the Internet. At the same time, critical momentum is building to significantly revise or even replace the current Internet architecture. Several substantial Future Internet initiatives have started in Europe, the US and Asia, and the topic is also actively being discussed in the vendor and network operator communities. These Future Internet efforts offer the exciting opportunity to design radically different approaches to supporting host and network mobility and multihoming, and may eventually lead to an internetwork architecture with significantly more advanced mobility features than those that the piecemeal extensions of the current Internet protocols result in. MobiArch'08 welcomes submissions from both researchers and practitioners that explore recent advances in architectures, protocols and emerging technologies to enable mobility and multihoming in the Internet, as well as concepts and designs to support widespread mobility and multihoming in future internetworks. Early results, position papers, systems and measurement papers are particularly welcome. To enable wireless and mobile computing, it is necessary to integrate technologies from the fields of distributed computing, networking, communications and signal processing. MWCN (Mobile and Wireless Communications Networks) and PWC (Personal Wireless Communications) are two conferences sponsored by IFIP WG 6.8 that provide forum for discussion between researchers, practitioners and students interested in new developments in mobile and wireless networks, services, applications and computing. In 2008, MWCN and PWC are coupled to form the first edition of IFIP Wireless and Mobile Networking Conference (WMNC). MWCN and PWC topics are revisited in order to make them complementary and covering together the main hot issues in wireless and mobile networks, services, applications, computing, and technologies. PWC´2008 is the thirteenth conference of this series sponsored by IFIP WG 6.8 and will be held in Toulouse (France) from 1 to 3 October 2008. The conference will consist of three days of scientific presentations. Previous events were held in Prague (Czech Republic) in 2007, Albacete (Spain) in 2006, Colmar (France) in 2005, Delft (The Netherlands) in 2004, Venice (Italy) in 2003, Singapore in 2002, Lappeenranta (Finland) in 2001, and Gdansk (Poland) in 2000. Performance of wireless networks is the major factor that determines their feasibility for the given set of application requirements. Performance has many different aspects, from different layers, and all of these are intimately related to topology, energy efficiency, management, user mobility, and security issues. The key goals of this improvement include Quality of Service (QoS) support mechanisms, efficient channel access mechanisms, security and energy saving mechanisms, etc. The effort to improve the wireless networks is linked with many technical challenges including compatibility with legacy networks, complexity in implementation, and practical values in real market, etc. TOPICS OF INTEREST ------------------------------- The PWC 2008 technical committee solicits papers describing original, previously unpublished, completed or on-going research. Hence, energy is of paramount importance in wireless sensor networks in order to achieve maximum network lifetime. While most wireless sensor networks use battery-operated computing and sensing devices, new technologies like energy harvesting have been emerging and getting much attention in the research community recently. In addition, each layer of the protocol stack can employ various techniques to conserve energy while the hardware designs of motes can focus on extending its lifetime. This workshop intends to bring together the researchers working on energy-related issues in wireless sensor network. Recently, car manufacturers and telecommunication industries gear up to equip each car with the latest technologies. The main vision is safety and commercial applications, enabled by short to medium range communication systems and/or networks (vehicle-vehicle or vehicle-roadside). In spite of the numerous value-added application scenarios, the VANETs (Vehicular Ad-hoc NETworks) come with their own set of challenges, especially in the aspects of security and privacy preservation. It is obvious that any malicious behavior of users, such as a modification and replay attack with respect to the disseminated messages, could be fatal to the other users. In addition, the issues on VANET security become more challenging due to the unique features of such network scenarios, including the high-speed mobility/large amount of network entities (i.e., the vehicles). Furthermore, conditional privacy preservation must be achieved in the sense that the user related privacy information, including the driver's name, the license plate, speed, position, and traveling routes along with their relationships, has to be protected; while the authorities should be able to reveal the identities of message senders in the event of a traffic dispute, such as a crime/car accident scene investigation. Therefore, it is critical to develop a suite of elaborated and carefully designed security mechanisms for achieving security, conditional privacy preservation, and efficient IVC authentication in a VANET before it can be practically launched. Scope of Contributions Motivated by the above observations, this special issue is organized to accommodate the most state-of-the-art proposals and research studies on achieving secure and privacy-preserving vehicular communications. [Our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this CFP] ================================================================= Call for Papers Special Issue of Computer Networks on Traffic classification and its applications to modern networks The evolution of the Internet in the last few years has been characterized by dramatic changes to the way users behave, interact and utilize the network. The research community and many network operators are responding to these changes by designing and deploying traffic measurement and classification architectures of increasing complexity. In fact, the observation of network traffic is at the core of many fundamental network research, operation and maintenance activities, such as the implementation of Quality of Service guarantees, traffic engineering, intrusion prevention and detection. However, the rapid introduction of new categories of applications such as network games and peer-to-peer, the increasing presence of malicious traffic, and the widespread use of encryption techniques, make the measurement, analysis and classification of Internet traffic a challenging task. The research community is therefore asked to tackle traffic classification issues by focusing on the design of novel algorithms capable of overcoming the limitations of packet inspection techniques, which are quickly becoming ineffective. Similarly, new distributed classification architectures and realtime traffic classification platforms must be defined to cope with current and future high-speed networks. Finally, the importance of preserving the users privacy and the need to reduce the amount of traffic that is collected, stored and processed are increasingly seen as some of the major issues that are limiting the progress in this area of research. ------------------ Scope of Contributions --------------- This issue is devoted to cutting-edge research achievements in the area of traffic classification, dealing with topics such as novel classification techniques, data privacy, distributed classification architectures, and emerging applications of traffic classifiers. In these systems the interactions among the different network layers are very complex and their effects on the overall performance are not easy to accurately identify. Additionally, many simplifying assumptions considered in analytical studies do not hold in practise. Experimental activities involving the development of systems and device prototypes and the collection and analysis of measurements from actual networks can provide insight on the behaviour of such systems in realistic environments, which can be beneficial for understanding how cross-layer interactions impact in practise the overall performance, for deriving realistic simulation models, for analyzing particular phenomena and evaluating algorithms and protocols, and for exploring the design choices in building actual wireless networks. Such activities are pivotal for researchers, developers, service managers and providers, as well as for end users involved in the evolution of these networks. After successful events in the last years, EXPONWIRELESS 2008 aims to again bring together all the aspects related to experimental activities on wireless networks, creating a forum where researchers, vendors, providers and users can exchange ideas on past experience, current requirements, and future visions, that are important for the development of new protocols, algorithms, devices and systems. High quality papers discussing original and innovative experimental activities on wireless networks are solicited for submission. Wireless networks are becoming too complex for even the most skilled system integrators to install, configure, and maintain. Therefore it is desirable that they would be fully autonomic -- able to manage themselves following high level objectives defined by network administrators. This goal implies a need for distributed computational environments that would function with often very limited resources such as bandwidth, energy, or processing capability of wireless devices. Nature has demonstrated itself to be efficient in dealing with many of these limitations, often in a more efficient way than the human-designed counterparts. Therefore there has been significant interest in applying ideas based on natural systems in the wireless communications domain. This special session aims at bringing together contributions that apply ideas inspired by natural systems to wireless networks. It will address leading edge research ranging from theory to experimental evaluation and tools. The topics include but are not limited to: o Self-adaptive and self-tuning wireless networks. It has also become a forum for discussions on related topics in world bodies, such as ITU, WHO and APEC, especially about the Ubiquitous Healthcare Initiative for Ageing Societies. Healthcom was successfully held in Sydney, Australia in 1999 and 2000, L'Aquila, Italy in 2001, Nancy, France in 2002, Santa Monica, USA in 2003, Odawara, Japan in 2004, Busan, Korea in 2005, New Delhi, India in 2006 and Taipei, Taiwan in 2007. 2008 will be the first time the conference will be held in Singapore. SUBMISSION OF PAPERS Healthcom2008 will have long papers for which full paper submissions are required, and short papers for which only abstracts are needed. For example, they do not utilize the context of the interaction, nor the environmental changes in the user's proximity or the capabilities of the device itself. This context can include information about the situation and the user preferences, longer or shorter time usage histories, etc. To improve usability and to provide a better user experience, the interfaces of the devices should become more intelligent and require less intentional user inputs. In order to achieve this goal, novel interaction methods need to be developed and combined with statistical models of the user that capture, for example, her behavior, personal preferences and goals. Furthermore, the developed solutions need to be evaluated via extensive user tests to guarantee they are valuable to the users. To improve the dialogue between the different research areas and their practitioners, the workshop aims at bringing together researchers from the fields of user modeling, user interaction and user experience, with developers of mobile and ubiquitous applications. The ultimate goal of the workshop is to provide a common forum for exchanging ideas between these domains. The workshop welcomes two kinds of paper submissions: research papers and position papers. Also videos and demonstrations can be submitted. The research papers should present original research related to one or more of the following areas: * user interaction in mobile environments, * ubiquitous user modeling, and * mobile user experience. The position papers should address challenges in combining the above-mentioned areas, and beyond, for an improved mobile user experience, and propose approaches for overcoming these challenges. We encourage authors to take a visionary view and a critical stand towards current practices and trends. Example topics for the research and position papers include, but are not limited to, * adaptive context-aware user interfaces, * mobile computing applications with adaptation, * considerate computing, * context-aware information retrieval, * embedded solutions for machine learning, * large scale data gathering and its challenges, * large scale user studies, * minimal/implicit/reduced user interaction, * mixed-initiative interaction. GI/ITG KuVs Fachgespräch WMAN (Wireless Mobile Ad-Hoc Networks) Fachgespräch der GI/ITG-Fachgruppe Kommunikation und Verteilte Systeme Universität Ulm, 10./11.03.2008 Aufruf zur Einreichung von Beiträgen Zielsetzung: Mobile Ad-hoc Netzwerke (MANETs) stellen heute eines der aktivsten Forschungsgebiete dar. Neben der grundlegenden Organisation des Routing-Prozesses finden sich in MANETs weitere wichtige Fragestellungen wie Autokonfiguration, Sicherheit oder effizienter Nutzung von Ressourcen. Bedingt durch die beschränkten Ressourcen mobiler Kleingeraete, das Fehlen zentraler Instanzen und die hohe Dynamik von Ad-hoc Netzen lassen sich bekannte Lösungen aus dem Bereich drahtgebundener Netze nicht ohne Weiteres übertragen. Aus diesen Gründen behandelt dieses Fachgespräch die zugrundeliegenden Funktechnologien ebenso wie Fragestellungen bis zur Anwendungsschicht. Auch konkrete Anwendungsszenarien wie Fahrzeug-Fahrzeug-Kommunikation oder Unterwasser-Ad-hoc Netze sind von Interesse. Die aus vielfältigen Themenbereichen bekannten Fachgespräche der KuVs zeichnen sich durch eine kommunikative, diskussionsorientierte Atmosphäre aus, bei der auch junge Forschungsaktivitäten sowie initiale Ideen zu Herausforderungen des jeweiligen Themenkreises präsentiert werden sollen. Autoren sind eingeladen, eine Kurzfassung ihrer zur Diskussion zu stellenden Aktivitäten im Umfang von maximal 2 Seiten als PDF einzureichen (in deutscher oder englischer Sprache, Formatierung im Stil der IEEE Transactions, siehe http://www.ieee.org/web/publications/authors/transjnl/index.html). Die endgültigen Kurzfassungen (sowie ggf. die Präsentationsfolien) sollen in einem Technischen Bericht der Universität Ulm zusammengefasst und veröffentlicht werden. Ferner ist geplant, im Anschluss an das Fachgespräch ausgewählte Beiträge zur Einreichung einer Vollversion für ein Themenheft der PIK (Praxis der Informationsverarbeitung und Kommunikation) einzuladen. Wireless Sensors Networks constitute a significant current technology, attracting considerable research interest from various disciplines. Indeed, the wireless sensor technology is employed in emerging areas with high potential for scientific research, being used for biomedical, environmental or industrial applications. These applications generally require intelligent dense environment monitoring which generates important data volumes. Data collection and analysis need to deal with cooperation and coordination topics in order to prolong network lifetime and to provide useful, synthesized information for automation, decision making and support. Topology control, by means of clusters or groups, is another applied technique to overcome these challenging problems. The 1st International Workshop on Distributed Collaborative Sensors Networks will focus on the research of developing collaboration infrastructures and solutions in the context of wireless sensors networks, aiming to bring together researchers and practitioners in these fields. In addition, the workshop will highlight recent innovative research results which will strengthen the formal foundation of this emerging area. This workshop is to be held as part of the 2008 International Symposium on Collaborative Technologies and Systems (CTS08). Their collective presence --- more than a billion registered cars, trucks and buses and growing in number --- places a complex sustainability burden on society and on the planet through factors such as roadway fatalities, fossil-fuel depletion, greenhouse gas emissions & roadway congestion. During the past decade or so, there has been a globally shared realization that in order to enhance the benefits of automobiles and decrease their environmental footprint, the roadway infrastructure and automobiles need to interact as part of an intelligent transportation system (ITS). Coincident with the development of ITS, there has been a much progress made with respect to transportation telematics --- the interaction between automobiles and the infrastructure to deliver services such as road-side assistance, automatic crash notification, concierge assistance and vehicle health reports. There has been extensive research & experimentation on both the underlying architectures and technologies needed to fulfill the goals of ITS and deliver on the expectations of telematics. A new era of vehicular technologies that includes vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications is upon us, seeded by both (pre-competitive) public-sector and private-sector funding. Examples include the dedicated short-range communications (DSRC) radio under consideration in the United States (US) for vehicle-infrastructure integration (VII) and a global system for telematics (GST) chip-set in Europe. Examples of telematics or nomadic device connectivity services include BMW's ASSIT in Europe, Ford's SYNC and General Motors' OnStar, in the US and Toyota's G-Book in Japan. What differentiates modern sensor networks from previous techniques is an emphasis on /intelligence /in the sensors as well as in the data network. Modern sensor networks also typically publish the data on the server on the World Wide Web and allow real-time access to the data. These networks require a unique combination of technological and environmental understanding, and have the potential of creating a revolution in environmental monitoring. Different types of data are collected by the sensor nodes. These data can be in different forms, digital and analogue, spatial and temporal, database or image, fixed or moving. At the server level the data can be visualized and analyzed within a Geographic Information System (GIS), combined with a satellite image and/or map, and published via the Web to give researchers seamless access to information. ESNs have the capability of capturing local and broadly-dispersed information simultaneously; they also have the capacity to respond to sudden changes in a location by triggering observations selectively across the network while simultaneously updating the underlying complex system model and/or reconfiguring the network. Data gathered by ESNs pose unique challenges for environmental modelling, as a complex system is being observed by a dynamical network. These challenges lie in the fields of computer science (from self organizing networks to algorithm analysis), mathematics (from computational geometry to data fusion and robotics), and statistics (from sampling design to prediction and prediction uncertainty). This special issue attempts to bring together an interdisciplinary group of scientists with the objective of formulating and addressing optimization of data gathering, data analysis, data coverage, modelling and inference when the network itself is a dynamic system of self organizing nodes. This collaborative effort will include both development of new computational, mathematical, and statistical tools as well as specific applications of existing ESNs designed to study environmental interactions. We particularly encourage papers that describe experiences drawn from real sensor network deployments, or large-scale simulation experiments, taken from a variety of environmental fields, including for example, bio-geo-science, agriculture, atmospheric and ocean sciences. *Subject Coverage* Original contributions on novel, robust, user and environment constraints aware, interoperable and effective solutions, to existing problems within the aforementioned context are invited. In particular, we now face the possibility to spontaneously establish wireless self- organizing networks, such as ad hoc, disruption-tolerant, sensor, and wireless mesh networks. These spontaneous self-organizing networks have been the focus of intensive research activity in recent years. Spontaneous networks arise from the cooperation of mobile devices in an ad hoc fashion requiring no previous infrastructure in place. A key point to couple research and real-life applications in this context is to understand how mobility (of devices, users, and applications) impacts practical networking aspects. The knowledge accumulated so far in the area of wireless self-organizing networks is in general supported by either simulation or theoretical analysis relying on strong assumptions. The research community needs a step forward and should definitely consider real aspects of mobility in their protocols and algorithms. Such a situation is to be compared with the one found for infrastructure-based networks (e.g., cellular networks), in which mobility has been thoroughly investigated (both theoretically and through measurements) and properly incorporated in their management architecture. In wireless self-organizing networks, contrary to common belief, much is still to be done in this domain, and definitive solutions are still to emerge. Mobility can no longer be seen as an issue to be hidden from higher layers of the protocol stack, but as an expected characteristic of today's communication systems. In this context, it is of utmost importance to address issues related to the impact of mobility as seen in practice, covering characterization, modeling, and applications of mobility in modern wireless networks. The research community working on wireless self-organizing networks has recently started giving more attention to the practical mobility issues in this area. This may be attested by the increasing number of initiatives worldwide like the many measurement campaigns and the considerable body of developed theoretical background work supported by practical arguments (e.g., mobility models, mobility increasing network capacity, relationship between node mobility and wireless channel conditions). The goal of this special issue is to help filling this gap by presenting contributions ranging from the impact of mobility on self-organizing networks to mobility-aware architectures for self-organizing networks. As we intend to focus on the practical impacts of mobility in wireless self-organizing networks, papers presenting insights from the applicability of mobility measurements and realistic mobility models in this context are also expected. We will be particularly interested in contributions that explore mobility to improve the behavior of network protocols and algorithms. Full technical papers should not exceed 14 pages in length while work-in-progress papers should not exceed 6 pages in length. In these systems the interactions among the different network layers are very complex and their effects on the overall performance are not easy to accurately identify. Additionally, many simplifying assumptions considered in analytical studies do not hold in practise. Experimental activities involving the development of systems and device prototypes and the collection and analysis of measurements from actual networks can provide insight on the behaviour of such systems in realistic environments, which can be beneficial for understanding how cross-layer interactions impact in practise the overall performance, for deriving realistic simulation models, for analyzing particular phenomena and evaluating algorithms and protocols, and for exploring the design choices in building actual wireless networks. Such activities are pivotal for researchers, developers, service managers and providers, as well as for end users involved in the evolution of these networks. After successful events in the last years, EXPONWIRELESS 2008 aims to again bring together all the aspects related to experimental activities on wireless networks, creating a forum where researchers, vendors, providers and users can exchange ideas on past experience, current requirements, and future visions, that are important for the development of new protocols, algorithms, devices and systems. High quality papers discussing original and innovative experimental activities on wireless networks are solicited for submission. The maximum size of papers should be 5000 words including tables and figures, according to the formatting standard for a 12-page manuscript of Springer-Verlag LNCS. The cover page must contain an abstract of about 150 words, 3-5 keywords, name and affiliation of author(s) as well as the corresponding author's e-mail and postal address.
