It encompasses ad hoc radio networks, sensor networks, wireless mesh networks and mobile multihop relay related to the industrial and standardization activities such as IEEE 802.11s, 802.15.4, 802.16j, etc. Further the multihop communications can be combined with cooperative communications and network coding, which attracted more researchers in this field. The idea behind such multihop communications is to utilize the availability of other nodes or to borrow their transmission capability. This in many cases exceeds the delay caused by the multihop relay, the gain from which is capacity enhancement as well as coverage extension of plain radio networks. Now we turn our attention to the robotics area. In these days, many researchers are noticing group behaviors found in small insects or animals such as ants, birds, and fish, trying to realize such behaviors into the control and coordination of a team of robots with their local interaction. The multiple (usually small) robots communicate each other, sharing the same mission, naturally through wireless communications. In this respect, wireless multihop communication is an excellent candidate for inter-robot information exchange. The main idea of this workshop is to bridge the above two areas (wireless multihop communications and networked robotics) by opening a place for researchers to meet and exchange their ideas. HotMobile's small workshop format makes it ideal for presenting and discussing new directions or controversial approaches. We solicit submissions of position papers that focus primarily on applications and systems and that propose new directions of research, advocate non-traditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate controversy and discussion. We particularly look for position papers containing highly original ideas in the following topic areas, although papers describing other challenges unique to or exacerbated by mobility are also welcome: * Operating system and distributed systems support for mobile computing * Coordination, aggregation, and spontaneous interaction of mobile devices * Novel applications and environments supporting mobility * HCI issues related to mobile computing * Security and privacy of mobile computing * Management, configuration, and deployment of systems supporting mobility Submissions describing new lower-level technologies are welcome if they focus on how the technology is being used or integrated into a system or application. HotMobile 2008 will be a highly interactive workshop. Submissions will be judged based upon originality, technical merit, topical relevance, and likelihood of leading to insightful discussion at the workshop. To encourage an atmosphere conducive to participation, attendance will be limited to 70 participants. Authors of submitted papers and accepted demo proposals will be given first priority, with others able to register on a space-available basis. Paper submissions are due on Oct 16, 2007 at 23:59:59 EST. Submissions should contain 6 or fewer U.S. letter pages in PDF format. Papers should be single column using 12pt font. The conference proceedings will be published by the ACM. Preliminary proceedings will be made available to workshop participants online ahead of the workshop. Printed proceedings will be published and mailed to participants after the workshop. As is customary, papers must not have been published elsewhere and may not be simultaneously under submission at another venue. Poster and demo submissions are due on January 14th, 2008 at 23:59:59 EST. Submissions must include an extended abstract limited to one 8.5x11-inch page in 12pt font. The emergency management domain is very information-intensive and mission-critical, and the involved tasks exhibit wide heterogeneity, difficulties in communicating and in physically reaching the place. The efficiency of the assistance is an aspect of vital importance, so that all involved people (healthcare workers, drivers, police, firemen, and so on) need to communicate, coordinate and access distributed resources in a simple and fast way. The employed resources (users and medical devices) must dynamically organize themselves in a temporary net, where communication links are established just in time. Therefore, the major requirements of such support systems are dynamicity and context-awareness, i.e. they have to easily self-configure and adapt to the situation variability. The above described context demands the adoption of very innovative and powerful paradigms, much more dynamic and flexible than those usually adopted for conventional distributed systems. The workshop we propose will focus on mobile and distributed approaches to face the issues of emergency scenarios, and to support involved actors in their tasks. This workshop solicits papers (from researchers and practitioners) that address key issues, open problems, models, infrastructures and innovative applications related to mobile and distributed approaches in emergency scenarios. Based on this observation, bio-inspired approaches have been proposed in the past years as a strategy to handle the complexity of such systems. The goal is to obtain methods on how to engineer technical systems, which have similar high stability and efficiency often found in biological entities. The BIONETICS conference aims at bringing together researchers and scientists from several disciplines in computer science and engineering where bio-inspired methods are investigated. Such networks fall into the fields of mobile ad-hoc networking (MANET) and delay-tolerant networking (DTN).Opportunistic Networks enable user communication in an environment where disconnection and reconnection are common and link performance is extremely dynamic. They are very suitable to support the situation where network infrastructure has limited coverage and users have "islands of connectivity". By taking advantage of device mobility, information can be stored and forwarded over a wireless link when connection 'opportunities' arise (e.g. an appropriate network contact is met). In this view, traditional Internet connectivity can be considered as a special case of connection opportunity. With numerous emerging applications, Opportunistic Networks allow a huge number of devices to communicate end-to-end without requiring any pre-existing infrastructure and are very suitable to support pervasive networking scenarios. Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) is a promising approach to overcome these problems. AAL provides equipment and automated services that enable senior citizens to live longer independently and self-determined in their own homes. This reduces the need for special medical care and nursing services; and it improves the quality of these services, often at lower cost for the society. Central to each AAL solution is a sound awareness of the elders' situation and their actual need for assistance and an adequate presence of the solutions. In particular, Ambient Assisted Living provides - automated support to carry out daily activities - health and activity monitoring - enhanced safety and security - access to social, medical, and emergency systems - promotion of social contacts - context-based infotainment and entertainment. This workshop will bring together experts from academia and industry to identify and discuss specific demands, approaches, and solutions with regard to awareness and presence in the AAL domain. Therefore, we solicit workshop submissions that present novel approaches and technologies in ambient intelligence, describe new applications of existing such technologies in AAL, or that propose future challenges for research in that application domain. The workshop will consist of the presentations of the peer-reviewed papers and a panel discussion session that shall stimulate future research in AAL with respect to practical needs for AAL. Papers will thus be selected not only on their technical quality but also based on their potential to stimulate this discussion. Manuscript Submission Deadline: December 1, 2007                             CALL FOR PAPERS IEEE Communications Magazine June 2008   ------------------ Feature Topic ------------------ Multi-Domain Optical Networks: Issues and Challenges   ---------------- Background ----------------   The continuing maturation and declining costs of optical technologies has resulted in current and future optical networks having several optical domains with different granularities; each domain controlled by an independent and autonomous service provider. Now consider the emerging applications, which require high-bandwidth and interconnection with multiple applications across multiple domains. These kinds of applications necessitate the critical need for intelligent optical network control plane which is aware and can compute end-to-end paths based several domain specific and technology specific parameters. Standardized interworking across various multi-granularity network interfaces and interoperability among vendors equipment/domains are crucial to provision end-to-end services and establish cost effective network evolution path. Current optical networks are based on multiple technologies and control solutions, standard and propriety, making inter-domain and inter-carrier interworking difficult posing several new requirements, for example, the routing process needs to know the extent of each domain and the granularities on each link within the domains and should be sensitive to the costs associated in traversing through other domains; the domain specific information sharing and dissemination; performance monitoring across multiple domains; fault-localization and reporting; security; billing and accounting; control plane standardization; efficient inter-domain routing protocols such as OBGP/PNNI; SLA negotiation and guarantee across multiple domains; interoperability issues; etc. Needless to say that, by having an interoperable and standard control plane across mutli domain optical networks, carriers can benefit from cost effective selection of network elements, platforms, and multiple vendor solutions resulting in faster deployment and reduced CAPEX and OPEX. To promote research and address these challenges many leading private and government agencies have funded numerous projects across the world. Clearly, these newer research initiatives will play a crucial prove-in role for emergent multi-domain optical networks, and their importance cannot be understated. This special issue will serve to share the collective experiences of researchers, industry professionals, practicing engineers, network operators, and equipment vendors in the area of multi-domain optical networking space.   ----------------------------- Scope of Contributions ----------------------------- This feature topic aims to consolidate and disseminate the recent developments and advances in the area of multi-domain optical networks. The articles describing original research and development, deployment issues and challenges, experimental results and applications as well as survey articles related to multi-domain optical networks are solicited. Implicitly, wireless signal transmission is crucial for control of autonomous vehicles which will serve as mobile nodes in the future information networks of distributed underwater sensors. Wireless communications underwater are usually established using acoustic waves, while electro-magnetic waves can be used over short distances. Acoustic communications are governed by three factors: limited bandwidth, time-varying multipath propagation, and low speed of sound underwater. Together, these factors result in a communication channel of poor quality and high latency, thus ironically combining the worst properties of terrestrial mobile radio and satellite channels. In addition, because acoustic propagation is best supported at low frequencies, high-rate underwater systems are inherently ultra-wideband. These facts necessitate dedicated design of communication algorithms and network protocols at all layers of the system architecture. Obviously, this shift in paradigm leads to a variety of open research challenges. Solutions to these challenges are pivotal in either leveraging the possible advantages of self-organizing systems, but could also turn out to be a heavy burden for both operators and users. The goal is clear: after purposefully introducing (artificial) means of self- organization, the beneficial features -- often identified as the so-called self-* properties -- should clearly outnumber the critical ones, like un-controllability, undesired instability and criticality, or unpredictability. Thus, it is essential for the community to learn how to design, engineer, optimize, and control complex, almost chaotic systems in a structured, purposeful way. One tool that provides means for this demand is the concept of mathematical modeling. This PIK special issue aims at giving a survey on the topic of self-organization and mathematical modeling techniques that are capable of modeling self-organizing behavior. It has also brought many challenges for the communication and networking community to address. On one hand we see present day mobile devices are capable of providing many services that required several devices before. For example, most cell phones nowadays provide high speed data access, still and video cameras, PDA functionality, etc. These advances in device sophistication and service offerings, including wireless hotspots, have made a difference in the way we communicate. With increased user mobility and user's desire to always be connected, we have seen a growing interest in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Body Area Networks (BANs). These networks can be tuned and applied meaningfully for individual users and their requirements. On the other hand the Internet has changed our way of interacting dramatically. These two major communication areas are having an in-depth influence on the way we communicate; it is worth considering them 'together' as the future communication vehicle. Keynote Speaker ============= Future Networking Technologies: A Funding Agency Perspective Sirin Tekinay, Program Director, National Science Foundation (NSF) This talk not only introduces and discusses National Science Foundation initiatives and programs relevant to the workshop, but also seeks audience input for exemplary applications of their subtopics. These activities range from individual program elements to foundation-wide initiatives. The directorate of Computer Information Systems and Engineering (CISE) of the National Science Foundation announced its "Clean Slate Internet" vision and initiative two years ago. The project, Global Environment for Networking Innovations (GENI), has been underway since then. Research programs around GENI have been formulated (Future Internet Design- FIND, Cyber Trust, and Science for Internet's Next Generation- SING) by different CISE organizations. However, a comprehensive research portfolio that will bring together wireless communications and sensor networking, social computing, network architecture, and mobility is on the drawing board of a CISE-wide team. Another CISE-led NSF-wide initiative is the Cyber-Enabled Discovery and Innovation (CDI) which has the following five components: Knowledge Extraction, Complex Interactions, Computational Experimentation, Virtual Environments, and Educating Researchers and Students. These themes call for projects at the interface of natural sciences, social sciences, computing, and engineering. By viewing technologies through a Kaleidoscope, these forward looking conferences will also seek to identify new topics for standardization. Arguably no industry undergoes faster changes than the ICT industry. So looking five, ten or more years into the future - What will the network look like? Which services will be offered? How will it affect people's lives? NGN represents one of the most complex transitions ever to have occurred in telecoms. Taking into account new realities in the ICT industry such as the need to converge and optimise operating networks and the extraordinary expansion of digital traffic, NGN will enable a richer set of applications to the end user, as well as allowing operators to benefit from a far simpler architecture and the economies of scale associated with standards. Objectives Innovations in NGN will bring together new and visionary ideas on the future of NGN. The event will also cover multidisciplinary aspects related to the deployment of NGN, including analysis of the regulatory and societal challenges that such deployment will bring. Innovations in NGN is to inspire contributions towards a kaleidoscopic view of communication habits for the future. We know what NGN is in terms of the underlying technology, but we don't know what services will emerge, how NGN will affect the marketplace for ICT, and how society will be affected. Nodes in today's challenged networks often include mobile nodes, space-based nodes, sensor/actuator nodes and other devices. Performance of the network paths interconnecting such nodes can be highly varying in terms of bandwidth, latency, disruption characteristics and security requirements. Conventional Internet access in performance-limited environments such as developing countries can also be regarded as challenged networks as can be ad-hoc communication between personal devices. The Internet protocol architecture suffers some problems when used in a challenged network setting. For example, when disconnection and reconnection is common or link performance is highly variable or extreme, one or more of the traditional Internet protocols do not work well. In this workshop following CHANTS 2006 and WDTN 2005, we wish to explore ongoing efforts in dealing with physical networks that operate significantly differently from wired, connected networks and the protocol architectures and algorithms used to deal with such situations. Techniques for making applications tolerant to disruptions and/or high delays are also in scope. In addition to the workshop program consisting presentations and demonstrations, we seek poster presentations discussing recent (possibly early) research results. Poster presentations with accompanying demonstrations are encouraged. Such demo proposals shall present recent practical results from the area of challenged networks. Demo proposals should include one additional page describing the precise setup and requirements. Poster and poster abstracts will be published on the CHANTS 2007 web page. The turn to nature has brought us many unforeseen great concepts. Biological systems are able to handle many of these challenges with an elegance and efficiency still far beyond current human artifacts. Based on this observation, bio-inspired approaches have been proposed in the past years as a strategy to handle the complexity of such systems. The goal is to obtain methods on how to engineer technical systems, which have similar high stability and efficiency often found in biological entities. The BIONETICS conference aims at bringing together researchers and scientists from several disciplines in computer science and engineering where bio-inspired methods are investigated. First, it is the development and application of pervasive computing (or ubiquitous computing, ambient intelligence) technologies for healthcare, health and wellness management. Second, it seeks to make healthcare available to anyone, anytime, and anywhere by removing location, time and other restraints while increasing both the coverage and quality of healthcare. Pervasive Healthcare conference aims to gather together experts in pervasive healthcare for sharing information on recent developments - both technical and system-level - contributing towards emerging pervasive healthcare discipline. We seek novel, innovative, and exciting work in areas including but not limited to: * Wearable, ambient and home based health and wellness measurement and monitoring technologies * Mobile and wireless technologies for healthcare information storage, transmission, processing, and feedback, including devices, systems and applications * Sensor networks for pervasive healthcare * Information management, processing and analysis in pervasive healthcare * Networking support for pervasive healthcare (location tracking, routing, scalable architectures, dependability, and quality of access) * Citizen portals and electronic citizen-managed health records * Security, privacy and trust in pervasive healthcare * Standards and interoperability in pervasive healthcare * Pervasive healthcare technologies and applications for citizen for chronic disease management, health risk management, health promotion, and disease prevention * Pervasive healthcare for health professionals * Technologies to support ambient assisted living * User needs, usability and acceptability issues * Business cases and cost issues * Clinical applications, validation and evaluation studies Important Dates Paper Submission Deadline: September 14th, 2007 Notification to Authors: November 2nd, 2007 Camera Ready: November 16th, 2007 Paper Submissions: Pervasive Health 2008 accepts submissions that describe original, research work not submitted or published elsewhere. The conference accepts two types of submissions: Full Papers presenting significant contributions to research and practice in different aspects of Pervasive Healthcare (maximum ten pages) and Short Papers presenting late-breaking results and ongoing work (maximum four pages). All submissions must follow ACM's conference style two column format including figures and references. Appropriate links to papers templates will be available from the conference website. Authors are requested to submit their PDF manuscripts electronically using COCUS System (http://www.cocus.info) by following the link and instructions at the conference home page: Do the submission in the following 3 steps: 1.
