The selected paper will be published in a special issue of Modeling & Simulation Magazine. Tutorials and Workshops ----------------------- * * Using and Extending NS3; presented by George Riley, Georgia Institute of Technology The US National Science Foundation has funded a multi-year effort, led by Tom Henderson at University of Washington and George Riley of Georgia Institute of Technology, to create a new network simulation environment. The new simulation, called NS3, will be completely open source, and is intended to supersede the aging NS2 simulator. The design team took a clean sheet of paper approach, and has designed the basic framework for simulating computer networks. In this tutorial, I will discuss the basic design of NS3, including event list management, memory management, data packet representation, protocol stack data flow, statistics collection, and random variables. We will then go through several example NS3 simulations, showing by example how to create and run a simulation using NS3. Proposals are also invited for tutorials and workshops to be presented at CNS 08. The proposal should include the tutorial or workshop objectives, a brief description (500 words), an outline, proposed length (one-hour, two-hour, or four-hour) and, a short professional resume of the instructor. Key dates are the same as paper submission dates. Tutorial and workshop presentation materials (in PDF or MS PowerPoint format) and handouts (in PDF, MS Word or MS PowerPoint format) are due by the camera ready due date. CALL FOR PAPERS: Second IEEE CogNet 2008 Workshop 'Towards Cognition in Wireless Networks' Sponsored by IEEE ComSoc Technical Sub-committee on Cognitive Networks (http://ieee-cognet.org) Scope of the Workshop Recently we have been witnessing an unbounded growth in communication technology; in particular, wireless devices have been proliferating. There is a serious demand for spectrum to support the communication needs of all these devices. At the same time, many researchers are developing methodologies to sieve the unused spectrum. There are already many solutions proposed under the 'Cognitive Radio' (CR) umbrella that address this issue. The efforts by IEEE 1900 Working Group and various researchers are blazing a trail in the direction of intelligently using the spectrum available locally for communication needs, making Cognitive Radio Networking (CRN) one of the promising candidates for future communication. They are usually in terms of architecture, sensing, optimization, resource allocation, cross layer issues, etc. However, an end user requires a system that is capable of intelligently finding and handling the available frequency band without any compromise on the QoS. Thus there is a need for the community to look at the whole issue holistically such that these solutions, results and proposals can lead to the rapid deployment of Cognitive Radio. The need is to bring together all the efforts resulting in a cohesive approach. This workshop will enable such a platform. We select, from the submissions, a small set of papers discussing novel ideas that should not only analyze the issues in a CRN but also incorporate a clear direction towards the implementation of the CRN systems. This workshop brings together researchers, practitioners and the early proponents of CR. This workshop will be planned so as to allow more interactions amongst the participants rather than a conference would allow. CRW paradigm has been trying also to gain industrial relevance through the Cognitive Radio work done especially in the USA. The workshop aims to bring in together both long-term academic and shorter term industrial viewpoints. These two requirements are naturally supported by decentralized and self-organizing IT-infrastructures. While p2p systems like Groove achieve an easy way of enabling communication between heterogeneous first response teams. There are crucial inefficiencies in terms of network resource utilization, which is a vitally important requirement in crisis response situations. There are still numerous open topics necessary to put crisis response and management software on a solid technical base. Focus for this special session is the technical management of distributed crisis response systems. The areas covered by this session are listed below. Additional contributions concerning crisis response systems that are not explicitly mentioned but fit into the scope of this session are welcomed as well. The underlying TCP/IP based communication layer becomes increasingly more a commodity product while intelligent replica placement, distributed storage, service discovery, access control and context awareness need to be provided by the second layer. Based on the available services and infrastructure of the second layer the top layer provides various user interfaces to the deployed services. The First International Workshop on Applications of Ad hoc and Sensor Networks (AASNET '08) is held in conjunction with AINA 2008 22nd IEEE International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications http://www.ccse.kfupm.edu.sa/~tarek/AASNET.htm Wireless mobile ad hoc and sensor network nodes have limited battery capacity. Hence, they tend to be energy conservative. Many MAC, routing protocols, scheduling scheme were proposed to promote energy conservation without degrading the performance of the network. Nonetheless, nowadays, many real-time applications have been proposed and developed using ad hoc and sensor networks. The aim of this workshop is to provide a forum for academic and industry professionals to discuss recent progress and challenges in the area of real time applications in ad hoc and sensor networks. Protocols for fast, long distance networks will have to expand from experimental testbeds and into the wider world. In that process, it is increasingly important for protocols which achieve high utilization on fast, long distance networks also to have the qualities required for widespread use, such as fairness and scalability to many users. The goal of the International Protocols for Fast Long-Distance Networks workshop series is to bring together researchers and practitioners from all continents in this area to exchange ideas and experience. This single-track workshop will provide researchers and technologists with a focused, highly interactive opportunity to present, discuss and exchange experience on leading research, development and future directions in high performance transport and application protocols over fast long-distance networks. In order to facilitate discussions, attendance will be limited to 60 participants. Please register early to ensure your participation. Depending on the number of people who register, we may need to restrict the number of people from a given organization to allow for a broader representation of the research community. Registration will open on 8 October 2008. PFLDnet2008 solicits papers which will further research on protocols for tomorrow's high speed Internet, at all stages along the continuum from the requirements of today's Grid networks, through optical transports, throughbenchmarking of proposals, to the selection of the next generation of TCP and other transport protocols. Participants wishing to present a paper should upload a four-page extended abstact to the submission site by Monday 10 December 2007. POLICY 2008 is the 9th in a series of successful workshops which since 1999 have provided a forum for discussion and collaboration between researchers, developers and users of policy-based systems. The need for efficient merging of the wired and wireless infrastructure as well as the new multimedia services and applications of next generation networks call for novel network architectures, protocols and traffic-related mechanisms. WWIC addresses research topics such as the design and evaluation of protocols, the dynamics of the integration, the performance tradeoffs, the need for new performance metrics, and cross-layer interactions. The goal of the conference is to present high-quality results in the field, and to provide a framework for research collaboration through focused discussions that will designate future research efforts and directions. In this context, the program committee will accept only a limited number of papers that meet the criteria of originality, presentation quality and topic relevance. While the emergence of these new technologies can enable truly ubiquitous Internet access, it also raises issues with the dependability of the Internet service delivered to users. Indeed, wireless Internet access is, when compared to traditional wired access solutions, more prone to security attacks and less predictable in terms of the Quality of Service (QoS) experienced by users. This poses serious challenges to the provisioning, in this context, of a dependable Internet service that meets the users’ requirements in terms of security, QoS, reliability and availability, among others. In order to meet the above requirements on dependability, new solutions such as security and QoS mechanisms need to be designed for the wireless access. Several issues need to be addressed in the design of such dependable wireless solutions, including the following: (1) the open nature of radio communications provides serious exposure to security attacks; (2) the limited capacity and shared nature of the wireless medium complicates the provisioning of Quality of Service; (3) inherently unpredictable wireless channel characteristics make it hard to guarantee availability; (4) exploitation of resources due to selfish and malicious behavior is difficult to prevent; (5) the emergence of new paradigms, such as opportunistic spectrum usage and self-organizing networks, promise improvements but introduce new challenges to dependability. This special issue will focus on recent research results on dependability issues with ubiquitous wireless access in the context of wireless technologies including WLAN, cellular and broadcast systems, ad-hoc and mesh networks, among others. Sensor network can be said to be the nerve system of our engineering network world, extracting and transmitting useful and timely information reliably for efficient decision support and quick corrective actions. Examples of end-to-end sensor applications include: cargo monitoring systems in a harbor that check containers in a WSN equipped ship for detecting dangerous chemical substances, locating stowaways, or calculating import duties; environmental monitoring systems, such as volcano monitoring and structure monitoring sensor network, that provides domain scientists high resolution views of environments; transport systems that route traffic using real-time data monitored by sensor-enabled cars; emergency management systems that can detect bushfires; smart home environments that enable remote monitoring of residents, early detection of emergency situations and enhancement of quality of life and safety. However, different applications have different context and mission needs, hence developing and deploying end-to-end applications for sensor networks in a realistic business context remains highly complex. Unlike traditional communication networks, a sensor network is to provide a high degree of visibility into environmental physical processes, not to provide any-to-any communications. Consequently, it requires an end-to-end approach that handles the WSN as a whole rather than as a group of individual nodes. The sensor network design therefore shall be fully context and situation-aware, and target to maximize mission returns with given resource constraints. We seek technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research results. On the one hand, the vehicles require information from the route ahead in order to optimally support the driver. The first page of each paper should include the names and affiliations of the authors, i.e., the submissions should not be anonymous. Submissions will be judged on originality, significance, interest, clarity, relevance, and technical correctness. Accepted papers will be shepherded by a member of the program committee. MobiSys, like most conferences and journals, requires that papers must not be submitted simultaneously to any other conference or publication, that submissions must not be previously published, and that accepted papers must not be subsequently published elsewhere. Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation Special Issue: Resource-Aware Adaptive Video Streaming Modern multimedia applications such as mobile television, movie on demand, IPTV, multiview video, distributed video conferencing, streaming and gaming over wired and wireless networks have stimulated research for new technologies in the area of multimedia architectures, processing, and networking. Current communications networks exhibit a wide range of capabilities, including various architectures, throughputs, quality of service and protocols; interconnection of different networks provides several advantages, but also poses major technical challenges. On the other hand, users employ heterogeneous terminals with a wide range of computational and display capabilities, energy resources, features, accessibilities, and user preferences. The variety of possible scenarios has escalated the need for efficient and effective techniques for streaming and adapting compressed videos in such heterogeneous environments. Considerable amounts of research activities in industry and academia have been devoted to developing the enabling technologies that are needed to make this vision reality. The goal of this special issue is to provide an up-to-date picture of state-of-the-art research in the field of video streaming, emphasizing the two key aspects of adaptation and resource-awareness. It encompasses ad hoc radio networks, sensor networks, wireless mesh networks and mobile multihop relay related to the industrial and standardization activities such as IEEE 802.11s, 802.15.4, 802.16j, etc. Further the multihop communications can be combined with cooperative communications and network coding, which attracted more researchers in this field. The idea behind such multihop communications is to utilize the availability of other nodes or to borrow their transmission capability. This in many cases exceeds the delay caused by the multihop relay, the gain from which is capacity enhancement as well as coverage extension of plain radio networks. Now we turn our attention to the robotics area. In these days, many researchers are noticing group behaviors found in small insects or animals such as ants, birds, and fish, trying to realize such behaviors into the control and coordination of a team of robots with their local interaction. The multiple (usually small) robots communicate each other, sharing the same mission, naturally through wireless communications. In this respect, wireless multihop communication is an excellent candidate for inter-robot information exchange. The main idea of this workshop is to bridge the above two areas (wireless multihop communications and networked robotics) by opening a place for researchers to meet and exchange their ideas. However, there are a lot of technical challenges that need to be addressed in order to allow ubiquitous access to real time and high-quality multimedia applications over such networks. New models, metrics and methodologies both in multimedia signal processing and communication protocols are needed in order to maximize user-perceived quality, meet device and network constraints, and maximize resource utilization. This special session will provide a forum for experts working in the field to discuss various important issues concerning next generation multimedia communications over wireless networks. The session is organized as part of ISWPC 2008, and aims at bringing together researchers to share their latest results and ideas on the subject. It is now well-accepted that the total costs of ownership can have a significant effect on the economics of many service offerings, and that unmanageable complexity can threaten life and economic health in the event of failures. Autonomic computing and communications apply notions of feedback control, self-organisation, monitoring and reasoning to the construction and management of large systems. Originally suggested by IBM as a way to control total costs of ownership, the fields have expanded to address the design and implementation of stable, "self-*" algorithms as well as the overall design and analysis of adaptive properties and behaviour. Such self-* systems offer to improve the dynamic responses of systems to changing conditions, simplifying their construction, management and deployment. Although often considered separately, the interdependence of computing and communications in the modern world implies that we apply autonomic techniques on a whole-system basis that encompasses both aspects of systems design. In this special issue we have two aims: to provide a guide to a unified field of autonomic computing and communications through invited contributions addressing cross-system and whole-system techniques; and to present novel research contributions that advance the state of autonomic and self-organising systems design. With this in mind, we invite research contributions including (but most definitely not limited to) the following topics: - techniques for self-organisation at a system level, - foundational science of autonomics and self-organisation, - application of novel techniques to large-scale problems, - self-stabilising and self-optimising algorithms, - evaluations and evaluation methodologies for self-organising systems, - managing trade-offs between system aspects. People interact with themselves, the physical world, and information services using a wide range of devices connected together via a variety of networks, enabling computing and communication at an unprecedented scale and density. This new infrastructure presents a number of challenges especially when it comes to data-intensive applications: enormous scale, varying and intermittent connectivity, location dependence and context awareness, limited bandwidth and power capacity, small device size, and multimedia delivery across hybrid networks. Conventional issues in data management have to be considered and evaluated anew in this rapidly changing environment. Non-traditional issues including mobility, data semantics, context modeling, broadcast and multicast delivery, data availability, trust and privacy must also be addressed effectively. The latest of a successful series, MDM 2008 provides a high-quality forum for the presentation of research results on data management issues in the evolving world of mobile, wireless, and pervasive computing. Over a long period of time, there is a great interest in exploring the ocean and other underwater environments (e.g., rivers, lakes, and reservoirs) for scientific, environmental, commercial, and military purposes. With the increasing demand for acquiring localized precise and real-time knowledge of the harsh underwater environments, current underwater exploration technologies such as SONAR or other remote sensing technologies can no longer meet such needs. Underwater Sensor Network is an emerging network paradigm which provides a promising solution for efficiently exploring the ocean and underwater environments. An underwater sensor network consists of a number of underwater sensor nodes with sensing, data processing, and communication capabilities, which are deployed in a region of interest and collaborate to accomplish a common task, such as underwater environmental monitoring, mine reconnaissance, and military surveillance. Driven by a broad range of potential applications in both civilian and military areas as well as rapid technological advances in microelectronics, wireless communications, and embedded processing, underwater sensor networks have recently received a lot of attention from both academia and industry. Distinguished from terrestrial sensor networks, an underwater sensor network has some unique characteristics that need to be particularly addressed, such as low communication bandwidth, large propagation delay, harsh geographical environment, floating node mobility, and high error probability. These unique characteristics present many challenges for the design of underwater sensor networks, including the design of network architectures and protocols. This has recently motivated a growing interest and a considerable amount of research activities in studying various major issues in the context of network architectures and protocols, including medium access control, topology organization and control, routing and data dissemination, energy efficiency and power control, node localization and tracking, reliable transport and quality of service, and network security and attack defense. TOPICS: The objective of this special issue is to present a collection of high-quality research papers that report the latest research advances in the area of underwater sensor networks, focused on network architectures and protocols. We are soliciting original contributions that have not been published and are not currently under consideration by any other journals. It is now well-accepted that the total costs of ownership can have a significant effect on the economics of many service offerings, and that unmanageable complexity can threaten life and economic health in the event of failures. Autonomic computing and communications apply notions of feedback control, self-organisation, monitoring and reasoning to the construction and management of large systems. Originally suggested by IBM as a way to control total costs of ownership, the fields have expanded to address the design and implementation of stable, "self-*" algorithms as well as the overall design and analysis of adaptive properties and behaviour. Such self-* systems offer to improve the dynamic responses of systems to changing conditions, simplifying their construction, management and deployment. Although often considered separately, the interdependence of computing and communications in the modern world implies that we apply autonomic techniques on a whole-system basis that encompasses both aspects of systems design. In this special issue we have two aims: to provide a guide to a unified field of autonomic computing and communications through invited contributions addressing cross-system and whole-system techniques; and to present novel research contributions that advance the state of autonomic and self-organising systems design. With this in mind, we invite research contributions including (but most definitely not limited to) the following topics: - techniques for self-organisation at a system level - foundational science of autonomics and self-organisation - application of novel techniques to large-scale problems - self-stabilising and self-optimising algorithms - evaluations and evaluation methodologies for self-organising systems - managing trade-offs between system aspects Contributions addressing issues that cross between the autonomic computing and communication fields are particularly welcome.
